LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Ahna), Essar Centre Concert Statuses, And New Videos!!

Before tonight's Skeletonwitch show, we have a new news post to get on the site, so what's on tap? We have a new preview video for a new original song, new material from a new album release (sort of), and the scoop on why there isn't many concerts going on at The Essar Center, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this month, so here's what you need to know!

A unique blend of heavier genres will hit The Oddfellows Hall on Thursday, June 27th, and this show will be immediately different thanks to featuring three bands that only feature two members each! As previously hinted at on Jamie Vincent's promotion agency's Facebook group, this show will be headlined by Vancouver experimental grind/crust duo Ahna, who are finally making their local debut a few years after trying to get a booking here. Their droning and often sludgy sound has resulted in many EP and single releases, so give them a listen and see if this is up your alley! Joining them in the Soo (and for the second half of their Canadian tour) is Montreal "renovation grindcore" duo Powercup, who bring a brutal death metal sound in a smaller package to the table, and they should be able to incite some good mayhem come the 27th! The other confirmed band so far is a new local band named Bad Back, who appear to be making their live debut at this show. Described as "a grungy 2 piece", they appear to feature promoter Jamie Vincent in their lineup, but I know nothing else (i.e. the other member, online pages, sound samples), but I'll let you guys know if anything else rolls in!

A fourth band slot is currently open, and I'll let you guys know when/if it's filled. Admission is $5 for this ALL AGES concert, with doors opening at 7:00 PM, so for more details (and to inquire about the open band slot), visit the official Facebook event page! This should be a very unique concert compared to what we're used to locally, especially due to the size of the bands, but fans of grind, grunge, and drone metal should be right at home, so stay tuned for updates as they roll in!

Next up, are you among the local concertgoers who notice/complain about the lack of major concerts (metal or not) at The Essar Centre? SooToday's Donna Hopper explored this in a recent article for the local news website on Thursday, where she interviewed Essar Center marketing & events manager Trevor Zachary about the lack of concert bookings at this venue. In a nutshell, Trevor said that concert promoters are completely responsible for bringing major bands to The Essar Centre, and the arena (as a public venue) doesn't spend taxpayers money, especially with the risks involved when paying 6 figures or more to bring in bands. Open dates at The Essar Centre are offered to promoters, but complications relating to scheduling (i.e. existing Greyhounds games) have been an issue, as well as the fact that major shows in Sudbury tend to sell out easier and quicker than concerts here. If concerts here don't sell out, promoters are more likely to avoid the risk of bringing bands here, and instead book a Northern Ontario date in Sudbury.

The biggest advice Trevor had to get more Essar Centre concerts is to go to the ones that do happen, so they sell out and encourage promoters to bring more concerts here. I do see what he's getting at, but judging by the comments on the article, many still feel that The Essar Centre and/or Trevor isn't doing enough. I won't pretend to know the process, but I think Trevor deserves credit for what the arena has been able to do, and compared to bigger cities and casinos in the region, they will have a rougher go of it for booking bands. It's an interesting article all the same, so give it a look at the above links, and go see the shows we do get!

We'll close today with new videos, starting with new audio postings from new local hard rock/jam project Mike Haggith & The Din! The new band outlet for local musician Mike Haggith's solo material (with 3/4ths of the band Haggith in swapped roles) apparently recorded an album on Friday at their label/studio Paperclip Productions' headquarters named "Perpetual Musings", and it's now available on special order only for $5, so message the label at this location if you're interested in buying a physical copy! Due to it's release status (and the backlog for Mike Haggith-featured albums on the site), an SMS review of it isn't imminent, but it's unique in it's structure, with 4 songs spanning 38 minutes, including the previously featured 27 minute jam of "Limb Coast", the 30 second "The Call", and parts 1 & 2 of "The Plumber". The jam nature is unique compared to Mike, Daniel, and Curtis' other local projects, though you may have to listen for a while to find elements more to your personal preferences. I've embedded "The Plumber (Part 1)" below, and check out the rest of the songs on Mike's YouTube channel, as uploaded yesterday!

Finally for today, you may have noticed hints to recording sessions on young local hard rock quartet Ashes To Dust's Facebook page in the last two weeks, so here's what we know on that front. Starting with pictures of frontman Noah Morden & drummer David Peredun on May 18th in the midst of recording, the guys finally revealed that they'll release their first recorded original song named "Forgotten Lives" on Saturday, with credit given to ex-bassist Kyle Breckenridge for being "a primary reason this song was made" and to lead guitarist Alex Hemy for the work he's put in on the recording. On Saturday, this preview video was uploaded to their YouTube channel which features a minute or so of a rough take of the song, plus assorted clips of the band recording the track. I won't comment on the song yet, as they've said this isn't the final product that we're hearing in the video, but I'm definitely curious to hear the full song this weekend! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Theatre Of Night), SweetKenny & Mike Haggith Updates, And More!!

We have more news to get to as we kick off the last week of May 2013, but before that, I'll note that I'm bumping our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on Giwakwa guitarist Chris Page's old band Lead The Dead to tomorrow so I don't de-emphasize the content of today's post, which includes a preview for a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!! It's for a great cause too, and it's the debut of a popular local band, so I wanted to give that the proper attention, so for that and more updates from two local solo projects and much more, read on below!

Sault Michigan classical metal band Theatre of Night will make their live concert debut TOMORROW in the parking lot of The Corner Pub Bar & Grill to help honour Memorial Day! Apologies for the short notice, the Facebook event page was only just created on Friday night. For the occasion, Theatre of Night will be playing numerous songs from their second album "The Dawn's Early Light" (with "Taps" kicking things off at 12:00 PM), and there'll also be a barbecue & silent auction to help benefit The Forgotten Eagles of Michigan, an organization that helps assist war veterans in the state. For Theatre of Night, this will be their first live set in the area that I can source, and if so, I believe it will be the first public concert that Craig Harrison & the Giles brothers have played together since I.S.O.M.'s 2009 breakup! Note that the songs being performed are all instrumentals, so I wouldn't expect singer Gaby Koss (who lives in Germany anyway) to be featured. There's no admission price or posted age limits for this benefit event, and everything starts at noon tomorrow. Check the above links for more details!

It's great to see Theatre of Night playing a live local concert finally, and given their proud American heritage and recent material, it's awesome to see them paying tribute to those lost protecting their freedoms! Hopefully this is just the first of many live concerts for them, and if you can make it down to The Corner Pub tomorrow, donate generously and rock out for a great cause! For a preview of tomorrow's event, here's one of Theatre of Night's promo videos for their American/patriotic themed album "The Dawn's Early Light", which you'll hear songs from tomorrow afternoon!

Next up, here's the latest from Dafter, Michigan solo artist Ken "SweetKenny" Sutton! First, he's revealed a tentative release date of June 30th for his sixth original studio album "Perception" (album cover pictured), and he plans to upload songs from it soon as a preview. No word yet on the full direction or length of it, but the most recent song posting on his Reverbnation page ("Magic Girl") mixes a hard rock groove and spoken word verses, so if it's on the album, it might be heavier-leaning! Now, if it comes out as expected this summer, we won't review it on the site until September at the earliest, as it'll be too soon from our review of his last album "Doo Hickey" in March, but it'll come if it does get released! As well, Ken put the call out for musicians in the Upper Peninsula to join a band on May 13th, presumably featuring him, though no word on if this will be an extension of his solo work or something completely new. This could be very interesting, so message him at sweetkenny@sweetkenny.com if you're interested, and stay tuned for more from SweetKenny!

Also today, Haggith drummer/local solo musician Mike Haggith has completed his YouTube channel transfer by posting four more back albums of his onto his new YouTube channel! His old "Sid Fucktard" channel has been deleted, along with some older audio tracks (he cited only bringing "relevant" material over), though I believe anything that didn't come over was posted before he moved to Sault Ontario, so nothing too familiar to local fans is gone. The new channel now has full uploads of 7 of his last 10 solo studio releases (only "Ace" and the not-previously-uploaded "For My Fallen Angel" & "The Best of Mike Haggith: Volume 2" aren't featured), though in at least one case ("The Curse Was The Cure"), the track listing is altered as an effective "re-issue". Among the postings were a couple of demo tracks that weren't released in this form on his albums, including a 2010 studio demo of "In A World" from his solo/The Thorns album "Laps In A Lake Of Fire", and a 2011 instrumental demo of "The Day The Lights Went Out" from "Neighbourhood Watch"!

Both are clearly unfinished, and "In A World" has some messier elements, but there's good stuff in each, so check out the instrumental take of "The Day The Lights Went Out" below, and stay tuned for more from Mike, the Haggith band, and The Din as I hear it!



Finally for today, here's three more assorted recent news items, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

• Local all ages concert promoter/Algoma drummer Jamie Vincent appears to have secured a show for Vancouver drone metal project Ahna on June 27th, as per a posting on his promotion agency's Facebook group two weeks ago, but full details and confirmation of the show have yet to come out. It's great to see Ahna finally get a local booking, and stay tuned for updates!
• I've updated our GarageBand Profile on T H E I D to further emphasize the now-inactive status of drummer Matt Hicks' more prominent later band Dirty Virgin, who have not made any public updates since last spring. Hopefully we see him back at it with Riverin or another project soon though!
• I've also updated our Defunct Local Band Profile on Faithless Sin to reflect frontman Jason Bourcier's recent addition to Winkstinger's lineup, as the profile was posted before Winkstinger publically confirmed that he had joined on bass. Not a major edit, but it makes the information more current, so I thought I'd acknowledge it, and don't miss Winkstinger's return on Wednesday night!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Suicide Kings), Plus Plenty Of Other Recent Updates!!

In what actually may be the last post of our 69 day streak (I have very little in the queue to guarantee a Monday news post right now), we have a bunch of recent news and notes to get to today, including updates to a few upcoming all ages shows, an archive album discovery, a new concert video, and more, but first, we'll start with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you need to know!

Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands winners The Suicide Kings will play their first show since their win last month when they make their first ever Roosevelt Hotel appearance on Friday, May 17th! This is ostensibly a replacement for their planned Rosie debut last weekend (which was called off due to a double booking), though unlike those planned gigs, they are only playing next Friday, as the Greber-headlined death metal concert is already scheduled for the following Saturday (though Suicide Kings bassist Mitch Sirie will play that show too with his other band The Bear Hunters.) As for The Suicide Kings, it'll be great to see the battle winners back at it with their high energy hard rock originals & some newer covers, so don't miss their first stop at The Rosie come next weekend! Admission should be free for this 10:00 PM concert, and you must be 19 to attend. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! I hope to hit this concert and go check out The Suicide Kings' full concert set for the first time, so stay tuned for further updates!

Next up, local hard rock/metal supergroup Skeyes of Seven have posted a new video from their Garden of Bedlam-opening set at The Rockstar Bar on April 26th onto their YouTube channel on Friday, and it's of their new original song "Fallen Faith"! Filmed by an attendee on an HD camera of some kind,  it's got nice video quality of this solid new track (I love the heavy choruses), though the lighting looks very reddish/purple through this camera, and the angle is a bit jittery early on. Very good stuff overall, and I can't wait to hear more, so give Skeyes of Seven's new video a look below!

Also in the news, here's the latest from all ages local concerts being promoted by AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent! Firstly, local death/stoner metal quartet Giwakwa have been confirmed as the replacements for RedD Monkey at the upcoming Sleep When You're Dead/Winkstinger concert at The Oddfellows Hall on May 29th! This will be their third local concert set and their first ever all ages gig, so be prepared for a brutal set of originals from this promising recent metal band! Also in recent Jamie Vincent-promotion updates, he indicated on his promotion company's Facebook group recently that Edmonton punk band Catgut (featuring his former Flint bandmate Jesse Silkie) are coming to town in August, which should be interesting, while he might be bringing in Vancouver drone metal duo Ahna in June, though this is NOT yet official. I know they've tried to get local dates here before, so hopefully this works out, but if you can help with a possible booking for Ahna's unique experimental sound around June 23rd, contact them at this link! Jamie's got a lot of big things coming up, so don't miss out, including the Royal Red Brigade-headlined punk/metal show on Friday!

In a bit of a shift, I wanted to let you guys know about an archive album discovery I recently came across that deserves a mention on here! During a trip to Value Village last month, I surprisingly found a local alternative hard rock CD among the used albums for sale, that being "How Empty I Am", an EP released by defunct local trio Sulfur way back in 1997! In case you're not familiar with them, Sulfur were essentially a predecessor to the early-mid 2000s London metal quintet Papa Fogals Chair (who featured all local/Thessalon natives), and the Sulfur lineup present on this CD includes singer/guitarist Andy Chillman (now of the London acoustic band Too Much Unsaid), bassist Mike Bird, and drummer Derek Turner (now of local metal standouts Garden of Bedlam), though future PFC bandmates Adam Chillman & Joey Grisdale are credited in the liner notes for other contributions. Recorded locally at Satellite Sound Studios, this 8 song album was in good condition, and it's proof that you should always have a sharp eye when browsing through a local used CD rack!

I definitely wanna review "How Empty I Am" on the site in the future, as it's heavy enough for SMS coverage (if a bit more alternative-leaning than PFC were), and when I do, I hope to post the album online for you guys to check out! That may depend on when I can get my computer's tempermental disc drive fixed/replaced, but stay tuned for more on this awesome find from the scene's past, and if you're at a store with a used CD section, don't take it for granted! Sulfur's album might be there, or more!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by profile, band, or site name:

• According to a post on the SMS' Facebook page on April 23rd, Sudbury death metal veterans Catharcyst are looking to play a show in the Soo, though an intended date wasn't given. It'd be awesome to have Catharcyst back in town, but they need some booking help, so contact frontman Paul Cipriani on Facebook if you can help out!
• In what's admittedly a minor update, Facebook event pages have listed weather forecasts for the timeframe of the event since March. This won't have a direct bearing on most local metal concerts, as few are outdoors, but keep that new addition in mind if you're planning around weather!
• In our last update to this series for the time being, I've added info on the final placements for Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands performers in our profile of last year' Sault Humane Society Battle at The Grand Theater, along with amending notes on winners Late & Loud's EP releases. Stay tuned for updates to another of our special feature post series' hopefully this week!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Free Refill), Woods of Ypres Updates, And More!!

Hey gang, this is a surprise auto-post while my computer's being fixed up at Staples. I had too much news to let sit, so I had to get a post in, even if it's while I'm without my computer! This is a packed one, including many updates from Woods of Ypres, a band continuing their search to play here, and to begin, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!! So here's what you need to know!

Free Refill are back! The young local hard rock band from Sault Michigan will make their long awaited return to the local concert scene for three shows in the next couple of months, which I'm pretty sure are their first since a December talent show performance at Sault Area High School! Not counting talent shows, I think these are their first live concert appearances since last year's departure of guitarist Tyler Wall. It's great to see them back, I wonder where they've been for the first half of the year? The band returns to the stage on August 7th at 4:00 PM as one of the live entertainers at this year's Sidewalk Sales on Ashmun Street! So while you get some great deals from local merchants, you can enjoy some live free music from Free Refill, who are no strangers to playing at Sidewalk Sales! The band will also be among the live entertainers at this year's Sugar Island Music Festival from August 13th-15th! Note that their MySpace page incorrectly says they're playing on the 12th, which is before the festival starts, so they're likely on the 13th. This is an all ages festival on Sugar Island with loads of family activities and many different bands, click here for details! No word on if any other local hard rock/metal bands will be a part, but for what it's worth, Nixxon Dixxon have played this festival in the past.

Their other new concert will be on September 25th on Portage Avenue on the outdoor stage that will be setup for this year's Oktoberfest! Still don't get why Oktoberfest is held in September, but hey, can't argue with beer and bratwurst no matter the month! Again, this is a free all ages event, like the rest of their scheduled shows. This one and the Sugar Island Festival performance are at 9:00 PM. Odd to see just outdoor festival gigs, but it's better than nothing! It's great to finally see Free Refill back on the scene, check out the above links for more concert details and stuff from the band!

Next up, we have loads of updates from Woods of Ypres as they near the end of their North American tour, so here's what you should know! Firstly, the third entry in bassist Shane Madden's tour diary is now up at this location, and it's another good read, as he chronicles the band's tour dates from San Diego, California to San Marcos, Texas! He details the summer heat of the American Southwest, the band's experiences in their shows down there, the mistaken belief that they covered Sentenced, the varying levels of competent promotion, and the various partying and fun goings on as the tour continues! Another good read with new concert photos and mid-tour sights, check it out here! Also, before we get to new videos, I have good news and bad news on the Woods of Ypres front. The bad news is that their tour van's windows were smashed last night during a stop in Brooklyn following their New York City concert last night. Their GPS and other items were stolen, but thankfully none of their gear, so the tour continues! Shades of the Adversarium incident from last August in Vancouver, or their windshield demolition from their drive to Thunder Bay on this tour? Well, nice to see them trucking along! The good news comes from a tweet from London, Ontario music video company Handshake Inc., who posted the following on Twitter on Wednesday:

we will be shaving @DavidYpres and make him jump off a cliff for the Woods of Ypres video shoot this weekend.

Catch that? A Woods of Ypres video shoot! Awesome to see, I've been hoping for a new Woods of Ypres music video since they released their video for "The Northern Cold"! Man, that was back when David Gold has long hair and the band used keyboards! Too bad that David's shaving for the video, he has a Varg Vikernes-vibe that's very metal right now! Still, seeing a new Woods of Ypres music video will be awesome, I wonder which song they'll choose?

Speaking of videos, there's plenty of new videos online from recent Woods of Ypres concerts! Two are from drummer Evan Madden's YouTube channel, again both from the "drum cam" angle! Both are of the same songs "The Shams of Optimism" and "Crossing The 45th Parallel", the first of which went up 6 days ago! It was from their San Marcos show, and though the video quality is excellent, it cuts off after 7:23 due to a full camera card, so I'll upload the other one, but view it here! The other is from their Houston show. It's darker, but no worse musically, they're great songs, and you get a better view of the rest of the band! I've embedded it below, along with one more Woods of Ypres video! The other one I'm embedding comes from the band's Philadelphia concert, and is one of EIGHT concert videos uploaded by YouTube user impaledonafence1! The videos are VERY dark, but they're widescreen and have very clear audio of what is most of the band's set that night, if not all of it! For the sake of variety, and for it's obvious local connection, I've uploaded the video of the band playing "Your Ontario Town Is A Burial Ground" below as well, so check out the new Woods videos!





Finally for today, a metal band still wants to play a show in Sault Ontario! Vancouver drone metal duo Ahna are still hoping for a local booking, and they need YOUR HELP! Singer/bassist Graham contacted me on MySpace to look for some help getting a show here for either September 28th or October 27th. He told me that they didn't have any luck directly contacting venues for help to get a show here, so the call is out again! If you work at a venue, book shows, are interested in booking shows, or just like Ahna's music and would like to help, contact the band on MySpace TODAY! Ahna have a very unique sound that I detailed back in March when I first told you about them, they have no guitarist, they play very slow and heavy metal that I really can't effectively describe without doing them an injustice. Check them out on MySpace and see what you think, cause we definitely don't get this kind of stuff very often! Let's help Ahna out, I'd love to see them here, I can't be alone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Caveman Morrison & Alaskan), More Bands Looking To Play Here, And Nixxon Dixxon Videos!

Hey guys, the weekend's coming to a close, and we have LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, lots more bands looking to play here, and some new local metal videos! So here we go!

Going in chronological order, we'll begin with the return of metal to a classic concert venue that's been getting back into booking bands in recent months! One weekend after they rock Coch's Corner, Caveman Morrison will be playing at....The Roosevelt Hotel on April 2nd and 3rd! Yes, The Rosie's back and metal's back with it! For those of you unaware, it's on Korah Road, which may be a bit out of the way from the downtown area, but a lot of people have fond memories of it, great to see it booking shows again! A start time of 10:00 PM is listed, there is no announced cover charge. If you wanna head down to The Rosie for some awesome metal covers, these could be the shows for you! Get full details at the official Facebook event page! Also, if you wanna know more about The Rosie, check out the "Rosie Nights" Facebook group by clicking here!

Looks like we can confirm this, as it was just posted yesterday on their MySpace page: Sudbury's Killing Queens are indeed playing at The Rockstar Bar on May 17th with Ottawa's Alaskan! After a bit of waiting to see if the venue would change based on some outside recommendations, looks like all is going to be as planned! A start time of 8:00 PM is listed, though from my experience at shows there, it may very well be later. It's nice to see them get a booking here, I hoped they would! Killing Queens have a bit of a unique sound going, their music is straightforward hard rock, but the vocals are harsher and heavier than the music's style, an interesting mix! Alaskan are also good, very doomy hardcore style, down-tempo and slower, neither band have a sound you get much here! This'll be worth hitting if you want something different, click on both band names to check them out on MySpace! If I hear more on this show, you'll find it here!

Now I don't know what it is about this time of year, but it seems like metal bands wishing to play in Sault Ontario is getting ever larger! Lately, a lot more metal bands than normal have either contacted me seeking help to get a booking for a Sault Ste. Marie show, or have been seen on external websites advertising a "TBA" show for here, or asking if people knew bookers. Last I heard, Rusted Dawn, Rape Revenge, Lab Rat, Aquila, Cop Shades, AND The Promonium Jesters were still looking for a venue to host them for a Sault Ste. Marie show! And today, I have FOUR MORE that are looking! Let's go in order by planned concert date to outline the next bands that wish for a Sault stop!

Firstly, we have On Burning Shores, a progressive/hardcore band from Markham and Oshawa (or as they conveniently mashed together, "Moshawa"!) Frontman Mike Bacon e-mailed me the other day asking if I could book them for a show in the Soo in late April. Now I don't book shows, but I'm more than willing to help! Very good band, metalcore fans will find a lot to like from O.B.S., their songs are hard hitting and have some cool progressive and death metal moments thrown in too, nice mix! If you're at all interested in helping On Burning Shores get a date in Sault Ontario, e-mail Mike on Facebook, or message the band at their official MySpace page! I think it'd be really cool to see them here!

And then we come to Durban Poison, a glam/punk band from Victoria, British Columbia! If you like Dirty Virgin, Durban Poison are right up your alley! They really remind me of Dirty Virgin soundwise, though they have enough of their own polish and swagger to set them apart! Plus, the fact that frontman Matti Corvette crossdresses in concert will surely draw some attention! Solid sound for what they play! The band has not been in contact with me, but their MySpace page lists a planned Sault Ontario stop for August 10th. Wanna help Durban Poison play here? And finally, the most unique of the lineups that want to play here! Two bands, Ahna and Nu Sensae (pictured), are touring together and would like to play Sault Ontario on August 16th! Ahna are a drone metal duo from Vancouver that play some very unique heavy guitar-less music that, really, I can't describe without doing it an injustice. Click here to check them out on MySpace, let's see what you guys think! Again, this is something we don't get here much, it'd be interesting to see them here! The other band is Nu Sensae, a grunge band who are coincidentally also a two member bass/drums band from Vancouver! Nu Sensae are female fronted, and once again, this music is very hard to explain. It's grunge, but it also has some different "qualities" to it that I find intriguing! Click here to check them out! It never hurts to have variety and uniqueness in the local music scene, Ahna and Nu Sensae would be really interesting to have here! Both bands have an August 16th Sault date listed on their respective concert listings for a joint tour, if you're at all interested in bringing them here, visit their MySpaces above!

So let this be an open call to all venue staffers and concert bookers: ALL of the above bands I mentioned are looking to play here! It'd be awesome to see them all here, so if you want a band to play here between April and August, potentially at your venue, MESSAGE THEM A.S.A.P.!
