LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison & Soundcheck) Plus More Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

This busy weekend concert preview slate begun early with Thursday nighters yesterday, and moves into Friday-Saturday shows in Sault Ste. Marie city limits for post #2. The plan is to preview the Northern Vibe Festival next (I did get a tentative schedule from one of the performers), with this weekend's two ARCH benefit motorcycle rally concerts and Wax Mannequin to follow where space and time allows. Stay tuned on those fronts, but here's what you should know for this weekend otherwise, starting with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will head just outside of town to Echo Bay TOMORROW NIGHT for a second concert at The Elks Lodge there linked to slo-pitch baseball! Apologies for the short notice, we only learned about this show via the band's Facebook page yesterday, though the Echo Bay Sunday Slo-Pitch League Facebook page first confirmed their involvement last week. Soundcheck had first rocked Echo Bay in June as part of the Elks Bay Days tournament, but things clearly went well for the baseball players and fans in Echo Bay then, as their return TOMORROW's concert is for the league proper's end-of-season banquet, and will be preceded by a catered dinner with cash bar. This is a ticketed and publically attendable event, and admission will be $20 (kids 10 & under are free), which will also enter you for the door prize.

Soundcheck's set TOMORROW NIGHT at 96 Church Street is at 9:00 PM running for your standard nightclub runtime, and free on-site camping is also available. Hopefully TOMORROW's concert is another home run for Soundcheck as they rock Echo Bay one more time to end the slo-pitch baseball season there, so don't miss their fan friendly hard rocking covers there or this evening at the newer A&W for the Cruisin' The Dub car show! Next up, joining his regular weekly concerts TOMORROW at The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post and on SATURDAY at Misty's Fifties, local acoustic classic/hard rock solo artist Tym Morrison will play a rare gig at a more standard nightclub when he returns to Reggie's Place on SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice on the Reggie's gig, it was only announced on the venue's Facebook page yesterday. Tym is way more commonly seen at atypical and more unplugged-friendly venues than he is at nightclubs known for hosting bands regularly, so keep his return to Queen Street East in mind on SATURDAY NIGHT for his own entertaining blend of classic and hard rock covers! Remember, he had played in the vicinity of Reggie's at the former Tazzi's a few times in the past year. Of course, his regular weekly shows at The Mike Case Memorial Stage tomorrow and at Misty's on Saturday prior are still going on as those series march on into (at least) next month.

The Reggie's show is a one-nighter due to or resulting in a karaoke night there tomorrow. Tym's triple header this weekend has start times of 7:00 PM tomorrow, 4:00 PM at Misty's on Saturday, and at 9:30 PM at Reggie's on SATURDAY NIGHT! The Trading Post show has no age limit, and none have a cover charge. Weather-wise, tomorrow's Mike Case Stage show is looking to have cloudy weather at 21°, but it's not expected to rain. Now let's head to Sault Michigan, where "weird Wisconsin hard rock" trio Sunspot will return to The Rapids Lounge at the local Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! This will be Sunspot's fourth annual trip from Madison to Sault Ste. Marie to coincide with the annual Michigan Paranormal Convention, which returns to the Soo Kewadin this weekend from today through Saturday for what will actually be its final year (click here for more details on why the MiParacon is "bidding the mortal realm adieu"). Suffice to say, if you are at all into ghosts, aliens, cryptids, and anything else paranormal, you'll definitely want to check out all of the action at the Kewadin ballroom this weekend, and click here to see who all is coming to the Soo for this year's festivities! Of course, you don't need a MiParacon wristband to see Sunspot at The Rapids Lounge, but they're quite fitting for the weekend.

Sunspot actually have ghost investigators in their lineup, many of their songs are about mythical and fantastical concepts, and their hard rock/power pop hybrid sound (including some violin input) has definitely turned local heads since 2021, and hopefully the end of the convention doesn't mean the end of Sunspot making 7 hour trips northeast to play here! Expect 9:00 PM start times and 21+ age limits tomorrow and Saturday, and these absolutely have no cover charge, paid MiParacon admission isn't needed. Finally for weekend concert preview post #2, let's head back to Sault Ontario, where local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will return to Gateway Casino for one night only on SATURDAY NIGHT! Two weeks removed from their last date at Shooters alongside bassist Pierre Anthony Vaillancourt's son Liam as a guest singer, regular frontwoman Valerie Powley will be back on Saturday, in what will be their first show at the downtown casino since they ended Rotaryfest weekend there. Hopefully Generations' skilled blend of classic and hard rock covers find another solid audience of fans and casino patrons alike on Saturday! No, they're not playing elsewhere tomorrow that I'm aware of. Saturday's concert has a 9:00 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover charge. LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), One More Concert Preview, And More Recent Updates!!

Well, how does one more weekend concert preview post sound for the Canada Day long weekend? Along with some new live videos and assorted updates, we have one more show accidentally omitted from our existing previews and a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you should know on this Saturday afternoon!

Local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will reportedly play at The Dive Gastro Pub THIS MONDAY NIGHT for a special Canada Day matinee concert! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced by the venue's Facebook event page this morning. This will be Tym's second show at The Dive in a five day span, following his "Think It Over Thursday" date inside the former Low & Slow, of course bookending yesterday's Mike Case Memorial Stage gig and today's Misty's Fifties matinee. However, MONDAY'S concert will be a "Patio Play" event on The Dive's outdoor patio, much like their Saturday bookings. Hopefully Tym provides an entertaining soundtrack of classic and hard rock hits for fans at the Queen Street East nightclub on MONDAY EVENING! This show has a 5:00 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover.

Weather-wise, The Dive indicated on the event page that "it looks like the weather will be on point", and while it's too soon to see an hourly forecast for MONDAY EVENING, 9&10 News is calling for partly cloudy weather with no chance of rain and a high temperature of 22°. If that holds, "on point" would be accurate for most, especially given that rain is likely on Tuesday in the current forecast! Next up, here's one more weekend concert preview that I neglected to include when we covered this band's Water Tower Pub show last night, as local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will hit the road for nearby Echo Bay (just outside of town) TONIGHT! This concert will see Terry, Cameron, Jim, and Glen serve as musical entertainment for this year's Elks Bay Days Slo-Pitch Tournament, with the Soundcheck concert being inside The Elks Lodge at 96 Church Street as the musical entertainment after day #2 of this year's Elks Bay Days Slo-Pitch Tournament! Despite the trappings of being linked to a baseball tournament, this is publically attendable, so if you're in Echo Bay/just east of the Soo, you may want to head to The Elks Lodge to enjoy their hard rocking classic and country covers tonight! Unless registered for the tournament, this is free with a 9:00 PM start time and no stated age limit. 

Be advised that Soundcheck had teased playing at a Cruisin' The Dub car show at the newer A&W on Great Northern Road tomorrow afternoon as well, but I have not found any public advertising or references to it on social media beyond what the band said on their Facebook page over a week ago. That doesn't mean that there won't be a car show with Soundcheck playing (they haven't always had high online advertising), but I'm erring on the side of caution by not including it here given the lack of promotion. Stay tuned in case something is confirmed, but to preview their Echo Bay gig tonight, here they are live!

Also, we have some new videos of local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations to share! A day after we previewed their late notice gigs at Jay's Piston Broke Pub yesterday and TONIGHT on the SMS, frontwoman Valerie Powley posted four videos of the band at a recent private stag & doe booking to their Facebook group on Friday, so what can you see here? The videos include Generations covering Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' "Refugee", Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy", The Tragically Hip's "New Orleans Is Sinking" (with bassist Pierre Anthony on lead vocals), and as embedded below, Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker". Unfortunately, these videos do suffer from a vertical orientation, a tight side-stage angle that completely cuts drummer Tony Santoro out of frame, and Pierre and Tony K. often being out of frame or blocked from view. Also, aside from the Sheryl Crow cover, these are all under a minute long.

However, the audio quality from the filmer's camera is really strong, and Valerie's powerful vocals are put to good display on the three songs that she sings lead on, none of which are frequently filmed from what I know, and it's nice to see things a little heavier as such! • I have sadly removed local death metal band Kaepora Gaebora (a.k.a. Exploring Detritus) from our inactive band links due to the deletion of their Facebook page (their only formal social media page) at some point in the past three months. The subject of our Defunct Local Band Profile from March, Kaepora Gaebora (led by ex-Bring The Fallen guitarist Dan Souliere) peaked as a live band in early 2016 but struggled to otherwise get off the ground, including in their 2022 relaunch. I wish they'd have left the Facebook page up, but hopefully we hear more from ex-members soon, and don't miss drummer Anthony Boudreau in HeadFirst!
• Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9 have quietly dropped out of Giovanni's Italian Festival at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion on July 27th, as per their exclusion from the full performer lineup and the band's removal of the gig from their website's calendar. A reason for their withdrawal was not announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and they are still playing at a Giovanni's sponsored event next month, namely the COPPA Soccer Tournament next Saturday! Veteran classic rock quartet RPM have replaced Silent 9 in the 4:00 PM timeslot at the Italian Festial.
• For the first time, Rotaryfest will feature a Stage 3 in 2024! Nicknamed "Wild Beats", the third stage will take place at the Downtown Plaza on Friday, July 19th only, and will feature three EDM artists/DJs, perhaps taking inspiration from The Northern Vibe Festival's hosting of separate Forest and River Stages for bands and DJs (two of the three performers are indeed playing in Ophir in August). Obviously, this doesn't cross the SMS' music genre radar, but it'll be interesting to see how Stage 3 does, as opposed to prior attempts to counter-program the festival (remember The Bottoms Up Lounge's old "Secret Stage"?)

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tantrym Tyme), The Newest Tuned Episode, Haggith's Next CD, And More!!

After a few days of just battle of the bands recaps and concert previews, we still have a little of each for today's post, including a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TOMORROW, but this is more of a regular news post, with an upcoming local album and some assorted updates rounding things out. Now, here's what you should know!

Young Sault Michigan metal trio Tantrym Tyme are apparently playing at The Elks Lodge in Sault Michigan TOMORROW AFTERNOON! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the show on their Facebook page yesterday, and only clarified the Sunday scheduling today. Barring possible unannounced gigs, Tantrym Tyme were last seen playing at a Soo Eagles hockey game last month (which completely slipped us by, our apologies!), and while a Sunday afternoon show at The Elks Lodge may seem atypical for a local metal band, remember that the former Abstract often play unique all ages venues, and they rocked this lodge on a Sunday in January too. Tantrym Tyme's skill and sound have steadily improved over the years, and though the hair is shorter, they'll be sure to deliver some solid music this weekend!

This show (at 1111 East Portage Avenue) will start at 3:00 PM, and there's neither an announced cover charge or age limit. See above for more details, and here's Tantrym Time live in 2012!



Next up, here's our latest look at Local2's video coverage of the VM Radio Battle of the Bands at The Canadian Nightclub, via their newest episode of the popular webseries Tuned with Donna Hopper! Following the format of last week's episode, the first segment features a recap of week #2's action and forecasts of what's to come via judges Rob Speers and myself (Dustin Jones was absent again due to Rising Tide tour commitments), and this judges segment will be featured in next week's Tuned episode as well, so keep an eye out then for them! The second half switches to Wednesday's last semifinal in the month-long battle, and it features performance footage and introductions from all four of this week's bands (Mike Haggith & The Din, Project 421, winners The Apocalype Afterparty, and wild card finalists Gnaeus), though X is missing from The Apocalypse Afterparty's introduction.

More performance footage of them caps off the episode, and it's another strong, entertaining look back at week #3! The finals this coming Wednesday (also featuring The Bear Hunters & Mannapool) should be excellent, so be sure to join us then for all of the action as all of the prizes are handed out! Check out the newest Tuned episode above, and remember, their video host doesn't allow external embedding, hence why we can't feature it here.

Also today, here's the latest from one of this battle's competing bands, night #2 runners-up Haggith, who have recently completed work on their new album "Apocalypse II"! The long awaited sequel to 2012's "Apocalypse", it took two years, a band breakup, and two bassist departures for this to be completed, and in advance of the official paid release of the album, you can stream the whole thing on their YouTube channel! The last songs from the planned album went up there yesterday, including the linked "Home (Parts 5, 6, and 7)" as one upload, the album's own title track "Apocalypse II", and the metal track "Hands of Death" that has been a mainstay at recent concerts. In terms of lineup variances, bassist Jordan Leach plays on all of these songs (and co-wrote "Apocalypse II"), synthesizer & keyboard parts are included on all but "Hands of Death", Curtis McKenzie is not featured at all on "Apocalypse II", and Daniel Horton's Project 421 bandmate Frank McGillivray guests on the "Home" songs.

As we haven't even reviewed the first "Apocalypse" yet, and with our review of Telephone & Address' "Rust Orchid" likely coming in the next week or so, I can't say yet when we'll look at this album, but there's lots of varied material from this talented hard rock quartet to check out, so definitely do so above! We'll let you know when CDs and sale copies are released, so stay tuned for updates, and here's "Hands of Death"!

• If you were wondering who was drumming for Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide during their local shows this weekend, then we can confirm via personal Facebook posts that Late Shift bassist Clint Wilson filled in with The Tide for their Sault-area shows at LopLops and Searchmont, like he did at some dates last year. No word yet on if Mikey Hawdon is still their official drummer or not though. Hopefully this weekend's gigs went well!
• This is honestly very overdue, but we've added local event planners & organizers Maxx Entertainment to our "Other Sault Ontario Metal Links" on the site! Ran by That's Chester & Stiffler's Mom frontman Greg Simpson, Maxx Entertainment have been instrumental in local concert events like Toystock along with helping out at the annual Ride For Sight, this month's VM Radio Battle of the Bands, and more, so check them out above for info on them!
• Local singer Michaila Ward is looking to start a band (preferably with all female members), and while she didn't specify intended genres, she does like some heavy/alternative bands on Facebook. If you're interested in trying out, message her at this link or via her Musicians Wanted Facebook group post on March 6th!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Peril & Tantrym Tyme) Plus More Recent News!!

Let's continue our clearing out of backlogged news items with our second news post of the day! Below, we have lots of assorted recent notes and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for this month (including THIS WEEKEND), so here's what you should know, and check out more new shows, concert previews, and more in the post below this one!

Charlevoix metal/hard rock trio Peril will return to the The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for their first concerts of 2015 TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band just announced the shows on their Facebook page this morning, and Kewadin's entertainment page hasn't been updated to reflect 2015 bookings yet. Coming just three weeks after they capped 2014 at the St. Ignace Kewadin, it's great to see Jeff & company back so soon to deliver their high impact metal covers to the E.U.P. once again, so if you're looking for some concert action across the river, TONIGHT and/or TOMORROW NIGHT's shows wouldn't be bad ideas to hit! There are no announced cover charges, 21+ age limits, and 9:00 PM start times in effect for this weekend, so for more details, visit the above links, and don't miss Peril this weekend! Here at the guys covering Ozzy Osbourne a few years back!

Next up, Sault Michigan hard rockers Tantrym Tyme will make their first concert appearance of 2015 when they play at The Elks Lodge in the Soo on Sunday, January 25th! Surprisingly the first announced concert on their Facebook page in four months (though I believe they've played unadvertised gigs in the interim), this will apparently also be their first announced concert since parting ways with bassist Quinton Jacobson, who was quietly removed from their Facebook page's lineup late last year. A reason for his exit has not been announced. Quinton had played with the former Abstract since the spring of 2012, and it is disappointing to see him apparently leave, but hopefully he turns up in another band soon! In his place, guitarist Mike East is listed now as Tantrym Tyme's bassist (reverting the band to their 2011-2012 trio lineup), and he and Quinton had alternated roles in concert, so this isn't that big of a big jump!

To be hosted at The Elks Lodge at 1111 East Portage Avenue (though I'm unclear if the venue or Sunday placement indicates a special reason for the show), this will have an early 3:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and likely no age limit. For more details, visit the above links! It's great to see Tantrym Tyme staying busy, so keep this Sunday afternoon gig in mind for later this month, and follow the guys on their new Twitter page!

Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

• New Sault Ontario goregrind duo Das Skalpell Kampf revealed their three songs for the upcoming Blood Shed Productions 11-way split demo on their Facebook page on New Year's Eve, and they'll include the previously revealed "Thanks For The Ride" and new songs named "Handing Out Headshots" and "Deep Fried (Long Pig) Steak (Sandwiches)". Interesting, so we'll have to see where this leads, and stay tuned for the full track listing when posted publically!
• According to the newest update on his promotional Facebook group, local concert promoter J.D. Pearce is apparently bringing Toronto metal band Exes For Eyes (featuring Endast frontman James Arsenian) to the Soo in March, though the date and venue are to be announced. That would be a great concert, so stay tuned for updates when they come in!
• Local alternative hard rock quartet Haggith appear to have officially confirmed Jordan Leach as their new full time bassist (replacing James White), as he was included in their "Happy New Year" post on their Facebook page yesterday. Sounds good, he fit in well with them at The Bear Hunters' CD release, but he does need to work on his stage presence. Look for more from Haggith in 2015!
• In his Christmas day post on his forum Freq's Music Planet, prolific local drummer Glen Thomas revealed that his recently dormant progressive hard rock project The Mourning Glory will be releasing new music this year. This is just their second public update since 2013, and it's nice to hear that Glen's still working on Mourning Glory material! See above for more info, and they're now back in our active band links!
• Local goregrind duo Rotopsy have revealed the cover artwork, release date, and title for their upcoming full length demo on their Facebook page in recent days. To be called "Sexual Assault Rifle" (they titled it, don't shoot the messenger!), it's planned for release on April 20th, but we will not share the cover artwork here due to potentially offensive content. Give everything a look above if you want though!
• Sault Michigan classical metal band Theatre of Night released a new original instrumental named "Foster's Death March" to their Soundcloud page on Sunday! Uniquely featuring more of a tribal and deliberate sound than their usual epic metal, give the song a listen above, and stay tuned for more on them and their album plans!

Late & Loud Concert Preview, More Joan Jett Videos, And This Week's Classic Video!!

Let's kick off Wednesday right with a new news post, and in this one, we have a bunch of new videos from the Joan Jett concert on Friday, this week's classic video, and leading the charge, a concert preview, so here's all that you need to know!

We have a midweek concert to preview today, and it's the return of Late & Loud to The Speak Easy TONIGHT! Details are scant on this show, but it will be the talented classic metal quartet's first headlining show at Algoma University's campus bar in over a month, and first concert of any type since a Rosie metal night in late September. The band mas only minimally plugged this concert since announcing it last week, but I assume it will be mostly similar to their usual Speak Easy concerts. For the record, I have no clue if this show will have a Halloween tie-in, but if I hear anything more official on this concert, I guarantee you'll hear it here! That said, I expect this show will be a 19+ affair (except maybe for underage Algoma students), a 10:00 PM-ish start time is likely, and I'd bring cash in the event there's a cover. Regardless of a lack of information, Late & Loud's word is good, and with past members of Stillbroke, The Glass Statues, and Losing Ground in their lineup, you know there's plenty of talent to go around! Now to some more new Joan Jett & The Blackhearts concert videos from this past Friday night at The Dreammakers Theater at Kewadin Casino, and first, here's four brand new ones from a new video source! These come from YouTube user Gwen Walker, who uploaded four videos from the show onto her YouTube channel over the last two days. Her videos were all shot on a cell phone camera, and they feature Joan playing her song "Fake Friends", her covers of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" & The Runaways' "You Drive Me Wild", and in the video we're featuring below, her encore songs "Little Liar" and a cover of Sweet's "A.C.D.C."! Gwen got a decent angle of Joan and the band from the left of the stage, but on a narrow cell phone camera, you don't get the best view. The audio works well enough though, and everything sounds about as clear as you'd expect! Nice videos overall, so check out all 4 of Gwen's videos from the Joan Jett concert above, and here's the encore from the show!



Also new from the concert are four more videos from YouTube user scott45044, who had previously uploaded videos of Joan & The Blackhearts playing their two newest songs "T.M.I." and "Hard To Grow Up" on Monday. Well, Scott followed those up with four more videos yesterday, and if you saw how good of a quality the first two videos were, you'll definitely wanna check these out! In the new clips, you'll be able to see Joan play her cover of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" again & her classic "I Love Rock N' Roll", as well as her songs "Go Home" (or part of it), "Love Is Pain", and "The French Song"! The quality's as good as before, and Scott deserves a lot of props for giving us such good videos from the Joan Jett show! Lots of good stuff here, but note that the audio is out of sync with the video at points. Because it's a hard rocker, was recorded in full, and wasn't embedded on here before from another user, here's Scott's video of Joan playing "The French Song", but check the above links for the rest of his videos from the show! Also, it's still odd that no videos of "I Hate Myself For Loving You" are out, but maybe it wasn't in the setlist. Oh well, what we've got works really well!



And finally, here's this week's classic video! With two huge shows of theirs coming up, it made perfect sense to tie in this week's video with local horror punk quintet Frightlight, who are of course opening for The Misfits in Toronto TONIGHT, then headlining the Coch's Corner Halloween party this Saturday! That said, this is another video from a recent Fitswitch reunion concert, and remember, every Frightlight member except Mike "Eddie Fright" Gingras were in past Fitswitch lineups. Like our classic video of Fitswitch covering Frightlight's "She Screams" from August, this comes from the very same concert set at The Elks Hall on March 22nd, 2010, in honour of guitarist Kevin Powe's stag & doe. In this video however, the classic Fitswitch lineup (including four past or present Frightlight members & Andrew MacDonald on bass) fittingly covered The Misfits' song "Dig Up Her Bones", and they don't do a bad job! On the original video (which guitarist Rick White uploaded to Facebook shortly after the show), there is some self-deprecating jabs at the lack of practice for the set, but it sounds pretty good still, even if some parts are messy! They know their Misfits and they pull them off well!

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!! All credit for this video goes to Fitswitch and Krista Kelly, who filmed this and other videos from this set. They did all the hard work, I'm just sharing this video with a wider audience!
