LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tarnished), More Weekend Concert Previews, And New Videos!!

Before we get into this post, we have the public go ahead to say that Soundcheck will be featuring guest singers Elly McWatters (ex-Re:Born) and Valerie Powley (Generations) for their short notice show at The Esquire Club TOMORROW NIGHT! Regular singer/guitarist Cameron Oliver will be on vacation out of town, and thanks to him for posting this in comment replies on our Facebook page this morning, as the band/venue hadn't publically confirmed anything prior! Both Elly and Valerie have great voices, and with Valerie helping out TOMORROW, could fans get a mini-encore of their show last year featuring most of Obsession's lead singers? Cameron will be present for tonight's Soundcheck show before he hits the road.

Now, today's post otherwise looks at this weekend's remaining weekend concert previews, a couple of new videos, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as Sault Michigan hard rock trio Tarnished will play their first show of the year on Saturday, February 24th when they return to The Fraternal Order Of Orioles Nest in Kincheloe! This will be Tarnished's second appearance at Nest 311, having headlined the Orioles' New Year's Eve party this past December, and clearly that went well for them to get re-booked already, let alone without any apparent ties to club events! For the record, the order's Facebook page hinted that Tarnished would be back in February, but we didn't hear a date until Tarnished gave it themselves on their Facebook page yesterday. Expect this to be an 8:00 PM event next Saturday with no announced cover charge and a 21+ age limit.

As for the Orioles Nest, it is located at 4916 West Curtis Street in Kincheloe, which is only a 20 minute drive south from Sault Ste. Marie. Fingers crossed that Alex, Parker, and Josh have a solid encore for fans at this somewhat atypical locale next week, and visit the above links for more details!

Now let's dive into the remainder of this weekend's hard rock concert previews, specifically via two Saturday nighters that had advance notice, starting with veteran Sault Michigan blues/hard rock quartet Project 906's return to The Strongs Tavern in nearby Eckerman TOMORROW NIGHT! After a three month winter break, this will be Project 906's first show of 2024 and their first at The Strongs Tavern in over seven months, which is a very unusual gap for them given how often they've played there over the years. Hopefully their hard rocking array of covers find another solid audience out in Eckerman tomorrow night! Expect an 8:00 PM start time, 21+ age limit, and no cover charge. This is from an undated Strongs Tavern show from no later than July 2023, unless there was a private gig since that I was unaware of.

The 31 second clip (as uploaded to their Facebook page two weeks ago) sees Project 906 and an uncredited guest singer covering Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name". A good (if very overplayed) song gets a strong rendition from what we see here, so check it out below, and don't miss Project 906's first show of the year tomorrow!

Lastly for known hard rock concerts this weekend, we'll head north to Sault Ontario, where newer local hard rock quintet HeadFirst will rock Shooters Downstairs Lounge for the first time TOMORROW NIGHT! After exclusively playing at Reggie's in recent months (aside from Toystock), this newer quintet will finally spread their wings to some other nightclubs this month, with Shooters first up tomorrow for new and existing fans alike. Hopefully Red, Raine, Liam, Claire, and Anthony leave a strong first impression on a new (to them) venue tomorrow with their hard rocking and classic covers, along with their current original material! A one nighter due to Shooters' DJ nights on Fridays, tomorrow's concert has a 9:30 PM start time, no cover charge, and a 19+ age limit. We'll close today with new videos from newer local pop rock cover quintet Bourbon Blue, whose general setlist isn't heavy enough to make our full coverage, but they'll be no strangers to many readers. Bourbon Blue are basically the successors to the short-lived 2021 cover band Lockdown, with singer/guitarist Jules Cote, vocalist Nicole Ambeault, and guitarist Randy Russell now joined by ex-Band Camp Rejects bassist Ryan Bell and new drummer Alvaro Scheid (replacing Turner Up/Settle For Silver alum Brent Royer). Yes, you'll also know Jules and Nicole from The Soo Fighters and Nicky & The Southpaws. In between their recent drummer switch, Bourbon Blue kept gigging with guest drummers, one being Soundcheck's Glen Thomas during their shows at Jay's Piston Broke Pub over the Christmas weekend (this was the same weekend where Double Down's Ric Datson drummed with Soundcheck in lieu of Glen).

Glen had fourteen videos shot and uploaded to his YouTube channel from one of his two gigs with Bourbon Blue, and while most don't cross our genre radar (hewing closer to Jules' old band Cherry Crush), the two newest videos are SMS amenable, including covers of The Interrupters' "She's Kerosene" and (as embedded below) Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me". Strong renditions that clearly attracted a good crowd to the floor, and while they don't lean heavier in setlist contents, Bourbon Blue can effectively add some rock to the likes of Miley Cyrus and Bruno Mars where need be, so don't bypass Glen's other dozen videos! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tarnished & Bookclub) & Even More New Year's Weekend Concert Previews!!

Due to SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS hitting the old news desk, I have extended our third (and final?) weekend concert preview post for the New Year's Eve weekend to cover five different events, all but one taking place on Sunday night to ring in 2024. Soundcheck aside (whose New Year's show was covered on the site yesterday), here's what you should know for the remainder of the local hard rock slate!

Online page-less local punk/alternative cover quintet Bookclub will topline Sault Noir's New Year's Eve party Saved By The Ball on SUNDAY NIGHT at The Machine Shop! Apologies for the short notice, Bookclub were announced as performing at this event a few weeks ago but it completely slipped us by until this week. The second concert event put on by ex-Gnaeus drummer Brendan Garlick's current promotion agency to feature a punk or hard rock band, Sault Noir are sparing no expense to make this a night to remember, including 1990s-themed costume and dance contests with prizes, dancers from Soo Dance Unlimited, and a honest-to-goodness ball drop inside the venue at midnight. Read more about the inspiration and expectations for Saved By The Ball in this SooToday article by Chris Belsito yesterday! Musically speaking, Bookclub will be joined by rappers from No Filter Records (only Sawbe was identified by name in promotional materials) and DJs AngelAzura, DJ Seith, and Damaging D.

Saved By The Ball is a licensed & ALL AGES event, though attendees under 16 years of age must have adult accompaniment. Tickets run for $25 apiece and include a free slice of pizza and entries for draws to win a VIP ticket upgrade or passes to all of Sault Noir's 2024 events. VIP tickets are $100 and also get you a loot bag, early entry at 7:00 PM (the event otherwise begins at 8:00 PM), and access to the upper mezzanine. A $100 group rate for 5 people also exists, and get your tickets at the door or online at this link. Proceeds from this event will worthily go to Pauline's Place and The Soup Kitchen. Next up, we'll head over to Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula for the first of three known New Year's Eve concerts from hard rock bands, as local classic metal/hard rock trio Tarnished will be sending out 2023 on SUNDAY NIGHT at... The Fraternal Order Of Orioles Nest in Kincheloe? Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only announced that they were playing here on Wednesday. This club has sporadically been hosting live music in the latter half of 2023, and they'll welcome Tarnish(ed) there for the first time to Nest 311 for their New Year's party, which is publically attendable and not limited to existing Orioles. Hors d'oeuvres will be served throughout the festivities, and it'll be interesting to see how Alex, Parker, and Josh go over on SUNDAY in case it could lead to more hard rock-leaning concerts there! This New Year's event goes down at 4916 West Curtis Street in Kincheloe (20 minutes south of the Soo) on SUNDAY NIGHT at 8:00 PM with a 21+ age limit and no announced cover charge. Now back to shows that did have advance notice, and we'll take a slight detour back to Sault Ontario for a show taking place TOMORROW NIGHT, as local southern hard rock cover trio Bone Yard will play their final show of the year when they go acoustic at The Water Tower Pub! Last seen unplugged two weeks ago at Gateway Casino and at The Water Tower Pub early last month, hopefully Greg, Alex, and Warren's classic and hard rock favourites find another strong audience at this central venue tomorrow! A one nighter as per usual at The Water Tower Pub (Angry Joe & The Growlers are playing there tonight), tomorrow's show is at 8:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover charge. These all come from their show at The Esquire Club this past Saturday.

The videos include what appear to be two original songs, something that Bone Yard has long teased but rarely post videos of. One is "a new one" whose lyrics were not especially clear, but the other one appears to be called "Fuck Around & Find Out". The two cover videos are of Van Halen's "Eruption" & The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" back to back and, as embedded below, Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man" (I embedded that here as its structure is the most amenable to being played unplugged). Alas, all four videos were shot vertically, but the filmer had a good vantage point to capture Bone Yard's set, and their originals are solid hard rock compositions, so give them a watch for yourselves above & below!

Back to Sault Michigan and area we go, and we'll next head to the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino, where Michigan-based classic/hard rock tribute band The Rock Show will make their local debut THIS SUNDAY NIGHT at The Northern Pines Lounge! One of two touring tribute bands playing New Year's Eve parties at Kewadin's two regional branch lounges (Niagara Falls party rock cover band XPrime are playing at The Rapids Lounge in the Soo), The Rock Show will definitely give fans in St. Ignace and Mackinac County the heavier night of rock favourites on Sunday, so be sure to visit their website to find out what all they have in their back pocket! Yes, The Rock Show have an alter ego as a Journey tribute band, who will be playing a private event at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin branch tomorrow while they're in the U.P., so if you see anything about that, now you know! 

I am unsure about specific New Year's frills, but it isn't unreasonable to expect something beyond the usual cover band amenities. As such, there is no advertised admission fee/cover charge on Sunday, it remains a 21+ event, and expect a 9:00 PM start time. From what I have seen of The Rock Show, they deliver the goods for fans of classic and hard rock, so don't miss out on their 2023-capping concert in St. Ignace! Finally for known hard rock concerts on this jam-packed New Year's weekend, we'll head back to Sault Ste. Marie, where local hard rock quintet The Nameless will end the year on SUNDAY NIGHT at The Merchants Bar! While not announced by the venue on Facebook (as is sadly far more common than not for bands who play there), this will be The Nameless' first gig since rocking The Merch for that venue's Halloween party, and they will reportedly return in March for a St. Patrick's Day weekend gig, exact date and such forthcoming. No details on end-of-year party frills were given, but hopefully Sault Michigan fans who want to enjoy some live hard rock covers will get the opportunity on Sunday! If you are at all curious, Sault Ste. Marie's annual anchor (not ball) drop will take place just not far from The Merch on Ashmun Street, so if you want to duck out to be part of the festivities, click here for full details!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Project 6), Mike Haggith's New Cover, And Last Month's Poll Results!!

Here's a new news post for your Monday, including last month's poll results, a new cover video, and leading off, a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for in a couple of days! Here's what you should know!

Traverse City, Michigan acoustic hard rock trio Project 6 will (as far as I know) make their local concert debut THIS WEDNESDAY when they play a special afternoon set at the Blarney Castle EZ Mart convenience store in nearby Kincheloe! Apologies for the short notice, this concert was previously announced on Project 6 and related bands' concert schedules, but with it's atypical venue and timing, it fell through the cracks. Not to be confused with local hard rockers Project 906, Project 6 is the (typically) unplugged side project from the members of Kewadin Casino lounge regulars Scarkazm, and while they will reportedly be playing with electric instruments on WEDNESDAY (as they have on prior EZ Mart gigs), they will still be playing as Project 6 with that band's setlist. I can't find any reference to Project 6 playing in the Upper Peninsula before, but I'd have never guessed their E.U.P. debut would be in Kincheloe, let alone at a convenience store!

This is part of the ongoing Thank You Party tour of customer appreciation events at EZ Mart locations in Northern Michigan, with free hot dogs and pop for attending customers and fans, among other frills, and this should be a fun mid-week attraction on WEDNESDAY! Note that Saginaw-based Elvis Presley tribute artist Jake Slater is the musical attraction at numerous stops on the EZ Mart tour, including Thursday's in Cedarville, but not in Kincheloe. WEDNESDAY'S concert at 4440 West M-80 is a FREE & ALL AGES event, with Project 6 on at 12:00 PM. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, here's their Facebook promotional video!



Next up, here's the first new solo performance video on local/Manitoba solo hard rock artist Mike Haggith's Facebook page in over two months, namely a cover of Daniel Johnston's "Some Things Last A Long Time"! Thematically inspired by Lana Del Ray's later cover, this is a well performed cover with Mike nicely using his emotional higher register vocal style, so fans of Mike's softer output should get a kick out of this cover1 Give it a look below, and stay tuned for updates on his next solo album!

What do you guys think? Well, it's clear that, as far as the voters in this poll went, concerts with mutiple out of town headliners won the day here, with all but one going for one of the major Machine Shop hard rock concerts earlier in 2018. Both the Big Wreck and I Mother Earth concerts were well attended major events, so I'm not surprised they did so well, while i was nice to see someone throw a bone to the Archelon concert in March! Given the hype an attendance, I'm particularly surprised that the Jesse Merineau, Shit Liver, and Jesse Stewart shows, plus Go Skateboarding Day, didn't get more attention in the poll, but alas, it's all in who votes. With the massive return of both I Mother Earth and Finger Eleven on the same night in April, I am not surprised at all to see it win this poll, and the three did get a vote will return in our poll on your favourite concerts in all of 2018 early next year. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Nudge, The Danger Cats, And Exiled), More Concert Previews, And More!!

Thanks to some SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, our second post with weekend concert previews to start the month is much higher in that regard than we had anticipated! The new shows & one previously announced gig (plus an additional new show later in the month) lead off this post, but we also have some late updates for a Sault Ontario all ages concert tomorrow night, so read on below for what you need to know!

Ishpeming/Marquette hard rock cover quartet Nudge will return to The Satisfied Frog in Sault Michigan for headlining concerts TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, we just heard about these shows last night, though they had been advertised on Reverbnation before recently. These will be Nudge's first appearances in our neck of the woods since rocking the Frog in May, and unless a December return is planned, will be their last Soo stops of 2014, so if you've missed Danzo and company, keep their hard rocking good times in mind for tonight & tomorrow! Note that this weekend's shows will also bookend a mini-golf tournament at 2:00 PM tomorrow between the band and Satisfied Frog staff at Lockside Mini Golf at 447 West Portage Avenue (across from the locks), which you can attend if you want to cheer on the band and/or Frog crew! For the actual concerts, admission is likely free, you must be 21 to enter, and 9:00 PM start times are likely. Also in new concert discoveries for this weekend, Sault Ontario all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats will headline at The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, the girls only announced this show yesterday. Hyped as a "the back to school show", this will be their first headlining concert appearance since their weekend at The Esquire Club in July, and with their set opening for The Red Rails still fresh in the memory, their originals and covers should go over well with the Rockstar Bar faithful tomorrow! For reference, this is a one-night-only gig due to the previously announced Summer Thunder show at this venue tonight. A $5 cover charge is likely for tomorrow's Danger Cats concert, you must be 19 to attend, and a 10:00 PM start time is in place. For more details, click here! Late notice or not, The Danger Cats should put on a solid show tomorrow, so keep it in mind for an entertaining night of local hard rock, and for a preview, here are the girls at The Rockstar Bar last month!



Lastly for our known hard rock concert previews this weekend is a previously announced show from new Rudyard, Michigan band Exiled, who also have a new concert to announce for later this month too! They'll first rock Kincheloe TONIGHT as the live entertainment at The Bunker at The Oaks at Kincheloe golf course (at 50 Woodside Drive), which is part of a night golf event to raise money for the autism charity Corner Pieces. Great cause, and a unique setting for a concert (band name typos aside!) Admission to the golf event itself is $30 a person, but I'm unsure if Exiled's set will be independent of that fee or will only be available as part of it. There's no announced age limits, and a 9:00 PM start time is announced. This show precedes a new announcement for Exiled, as they'll be (among?) the entertainment at the "Wild In Da Wilderness" party for the local branch of the Jokers Motorcycle Club of Michigan on Saturday, September 20th, which is publically attendable! Located at 7100 M-129 (close to the 7 Mile Road turnoff), this 21+ event will have live music, food, prize raffles, bike games, and free camping from 1:00 PM on that day, so visit the official Facebook event page for full details!

Both of these shows will also be Exiled's first as a quintet, with the band adding guitarist Joe Jenkins (Full Throttle) and bassist Myke Young (Division of Sanity) to their lineup in recent weeks, and with frontman Donny Newell visibly moving to just vocals rather than playing guitar too. Nice to see a fuller lineup, and with Joe & Myke's bands recently not doing too much, it's nice to see them staying busy with a new project! These are unconventional shows for Exiled, but both are for good causes and connections, so keep each in mind, and don't miss Exiled's night golf set TONIGHT in Kincheloe!

Finally for today, here's some late updates concerning TOMORROW'S IDNS-headlined all ages show at The Oddfellows Hall! In terms of the lineup, it appears that local doom/punk trio The Revolution have quietly been removed from the new band schedule on the Facebook event page, though a reason for the former Brutaly Fatal's exit has not been announced by the band or promoters. Hopefully things are alright in their camp, and we'll keep you guys posted when we hear more from The Revolution! Concerning acts that are playing, local grunge/punk solo project Telephone & Address confirmed on their Facebook page tonight that they will indeed release their new CD "Need Not Apply" tomorrow night! Chris projected $15 sale costs for the album, which has 15 songs likewise, and the cover of one copy is pictured. Nice to see, and the timing makes perfect sense, so keep an eye out for the new Telephone & Address album tomorrow! Remember, tomorrow's concert is ALL AGES, admission is $10, everything starts at 5:00 PM, and I hope to be there too, so don't miss out on one of the first big metal shows of the fall!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & Exiled), A New Local Band, And New Videos!!

Busy day for me yesterday, but now let's touch on some back news items as we get up to speed! Today's post mostly relates to the Sault Michigan area, including LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS. a brand new local band, a new video, and a bassist change, but we have a cool Sault Ontario update to cap things off with. Now, here's what you need to know!

We have a new local band to add to our Sault Michigan band links, and they are a new hard rock trio named Exiled! Based out of nearby Rudyard, their lineup features former Absolute & NoXcape bandmates Donny Newell (most recently of the original Full Throttle) on vocals & bass and Justin Lawless on drums, alongside guitarist Johnny Mayer, who is presumably related to some of the other Mayer family members with regional music ties. A likely cover-centric band that tackles both classic & modern rock material, I assume they'll be musically similar to Donny & Justin's past collective bands, but no media is online yet to prove that. Exiled debuted at Dan's Place in Rudyard at some point earlier this month (apologies for missing that show), and in some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, their next announced concert will come on Saturday, September 6th when they play at The Bunker Bar & Grill at The Oaks at Kincheloe Golf Course (obviously in Kincheloe), which they'll follow with a full Friday-Saturday weekend back at Dan's Place in Rudyard on November 14th & 15th, so keep those in mind too!

Each show has an announced 9:00 PM start time, all are presumably 19+, and none have an announced cover charge (though for the sake of clarity, I'm not familiar with The Bunker as a concert venue at all.) Nice to see Exiled off to a quick start, and if the guys can recapture past magic and chemistry from older bands, things should be alright going forward! Next up, Kinross hard/classic rock trio Banned will return to the Chippewa County Fair in their hometown for a set THIS COMING FRIDAY! You may remember that the guys have played the fair in past years both by themselves and as part of the Rock Till You Drop charity battle of the bands, which I don't think is back this year (at the very least, it's not on the fair's schedule), but we'll let you know if we hear otherwise. It's good to see the guys back for this year's fair, so look for them at the pavilion near the Lions Club building on Friday at 4:00 PM! This is definitely ALL AGES, and click here for info on admission and ticket packages. While we're on the subject of Banned, singer/guitarist Alex Traynor has joined the wave of people participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS research (click here to see the video, hopefully more local musicians take part!), and a new video relating to their concerts is also on their YouTube channel now too, so what's there?

A cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride & Joy" that was uploaded to their YouTube channel on Wednesday, this is an audio recording from a recent show at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino, as set to photos of their set by Holly Traynor (a relative of both Alex and drummer Don Traynor.) The video also confirms that Banned's current lineup no longer features bassist Jim Pentland, with former Bad Side bassist Wayne Lawrence taking over in his place at some point in recent months. A reason for Jim's departure hasn't been announced, but he was last visibly depicted online with Banned in April. Hopefully all's amicable, so best of luck to Jim going forward, and it's nice to see Wayne back in a local band again! As for the video itself, it's well put together and edited, but I do have to nitpick the cover in one aspect, as the vocals don't have the bluesy soul or deep tone that really "fits" a Stevie Ray Vaughan cover, but all's good otherwise! It's at least heavier than their recent modern indie rock postings. Check out Banned's new slideshow video below, and good luck in Gould City this weekend!



Lastly, we have a video of defunct Sault Ontario classic metal quartet Late & Loud from their farewell(?) concert at The Rockstar Bar three weeks ago! Courtesy of local music promotion company For The Music Inside (who also took many photos that you can see at this link), this is of the guys playing their original song "Fast As A Bitch" with a guest appearance by former Lust Boys guitarist Ben Kemp-Reynolds (a.k.a. Benny Blitz), who some of you may remember as a bandmate of bassist Benn Garside's in both The Glass Statues and in older CASS Cafe-era bands! Great to see Benny back in the area, and he looks and plays the part even in a guest role! The video's solid and close to the action, though the colour is very warm and almost too "red" from the lighting, but other than that, no complaints! I'm just surprised this took 3 weeks to make it to F.T.M.I.'s YouTube channel, but things relating to this show did come slowly to their online pages. It's here now though, so give it a look below, and watch for a cool solo from Benny at video's end!
