After a two day sojourn into single topics from the E.U.P., we have a new news post today, including updates on an upcoming concert (we hope!) and a related video upload, but let's begin with the latest updates regarding the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and it's affect on local hard rock and punk concerts. On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued stay-at-home orders, ordering only essential services to stay open as part of the efforts to contain the coronavirus. In Michigan, the executive order is for 3 weeks for the period starting yesterday and ending April 13th, while in Ontario, the stay-at-home period is just 2 weeks starting today and ending on April 7th, though those could always be extended if things aren't appreciably better by next month.
Of course, concert venues and nightclubs are not and should not be considered essential services, so concert cancellations in the above stay-at-home periods are now inevitable. That said, the only shows directly affected by this news that were listed on the site are Scarkazm's planned St. Ignace Kewadin Casino stops on the April 10th weekend. As such, they have been removed from our calendar, but look for the guys back in the E.U.P. this fall! The Ontario stay-at-home order ends sooner than Michigan's, so for now, the April 10th shows in Sault Ontario from touring tribute bands Sandman and Just Heart are not directly affected, but the status of either one isn't looking amazing, especially as Sandman's Thunder Bay show on the 11th has already been postponed. Neither the bands nor venues have announced that they are off as of this writing, but we will keep you posted. One concert that was definitely cancelled over the weekend was the Whoop-Szo concert at The Sault Ste. Marie Museum on April 16th, for very obvious reasons.
As well, Ottawa thrash quartet Lycanthro have postponed their upcoming Tour of the Wolf, including their planned Rockstar Bar stop on April 21st, as announced in this Facebook video regarding their upcoming plans, though local promoters have not corroborated this on social media. No word as of yet regarding the First Jason concert on April 26th, but absolutely stay tuned for updates. Just in case anyone was wondering, I am not listing Tym Morrison's usual weekly matinee shows at Gliss or Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished's Thursday matinees at Biggby Coffee until we hear from either venue that their dine-in operations have resumed. I would have been mentioning their April slates in this weekend's concert previews, had we had any shows to preview, so I just wanted to be clear and up front regarding those weekly arrangements. Looking ahead to May, promoters The Diamond Mine Agency have revealed that they have a backup date in place for the Buckcherry concert at Soo Blaster on May 13th if they have to postpone it, so visit the official Facebook event page for more on that front.
Looking ahead to May, one concert that month that could very well be affected by COVID-19 is local/Thompson, Manitoba alt-hard rock solo artist Mike Haggith's planned CD release concert at LopLops Lounge on Friday, May 15th. Last week, Mike posted on his Facebook page to clarify that, as of then, the release show was still on, but they would absolutely postpone the event to a later date if circumstances warrant it. However, like A Dire Setback this Saturday, Mike will still be releasing "If Ever Comes The Day" digitally and through streaming platforms on schedule, with in-person and mail delivery of CDs also available, so fans will have that to look forward to! Assuming the release concert goes on as planned, Mike announced his backing musicians for his set that night via the show's Facebook event page, so who's joining in? On drums is Re:Born's Brandan Glew, who was Mike's Din bandmate in their post-acid jam run and at his "The Warinside" release show in 2015.
Rather than his bass role with The Din and at the 2015 release party, Mike is playing live guitar this time, with A Dire Setback bassist Matt Quinn rounding out the apparent trio lineup in May. Solid and talented choice, though will this be the second release concert that Matt's involved with in a two month span to be postponed due to the coronavirus? I sincerely hope not, but Mike did elaborate on much of the above notes in this new Facebook video embedded below, where he also revealed that there could be a live-streamed event of some kind on May 15th if the concert is postponed, and he even teased plans to film a music video for a single from the album in the Soo if things level out. In any event, he is teasing a new single release and more info about the songwriting in the interim. The last week of the month is upon us, so let's kick things off with a new news post on the SMS, and it includes some new videos from familiar solo musicians, but first, we have two interesting LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for two months from now, so here's what you should know!
London sludge/post-metal quintet Whoop-Szo will rock Sault Ste. Marie for the third time on Thursday, April 16th when they play at.... The Sault Ste. Marie Museum!? Not too long ago, this would have been even more surprising, but just last week, the 690 Queen Street East museum opened it's doors to a concert from Brantford folk musician Benjamin Dakota Rogers that was well received, so click here for more on the museum's debut as a live music venue and how things may look for their second go-around. Of course, our city's museum has a lot of historic and cultural importance that adds to the appeal, and don't forget, Bone Yard/ex-That's Chester drummer Ric Datson is their assistant curator. Regarding Whoop-Szo proper, fans may recall seeing them at LopLops in 2018 and at the Dryer Fire pop-up venue in September. Known for their hybrid of everything from metal & grunge to folk & pop, Whoop-Szo should leave another big impression in April!
No opening acts are advertised, though both of Whoop-Szo's prior local dates had extra touring bands. Promoted by the aforementioned Dryer Fire's regular concert arm, this concert will take place inside the Museum's Discovery Gallery, and an early 6:00 PM start time is advertised for this presumably all ages concert. Like last week, local vendors will be on hand, and while an admission fee wasn't advertised, Benjamin's concert there ran for $15, and paid attendees will be able to actually tour the museum with their admission. Very intriguing show in all facets, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details!
Next up, a more traditional metal concert will hit The Rockstar Bar five days later, as Ottawa power/thrash metal quartet Lycanthro will make their local concert debut on Tuesday, April 21st! Delivering a decidedly old school brand of NWOBHM-influenced speed metal, this late stop on their Tour of the Wolf should provide a hard hitting metal blast for fans in two months time, so if you can swing coming out on a school/work night, Lycanthro should deliver the goods! Local openers will include an increasingly rare set from local death metal veterans The Bear Hunters, in their first concert of 2020, just their third in the past two years, and their first Rockstar Bar appearance since their Amon Amarth tribute set on Halloween weekend in 2017. Bear Hunters sets are getting rarer and rarer, but they have survived into a new decade and still have a new CD in the pipeline, so don't miss their latest long-awaited return in April to see what they have in store!
Local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades are also advertised to open in their own first concert set of the year, and first of two announced dates for the spring after laying low through the winter. It'll be great to see Jack Spades back themselves, so don't be late! Seemingly self promoted through The Bear Hunters, this 19+ concert has an early-ish 8:00 PM start time advertised (given the date, hopefully that sticks), and an admission fee has not yet been announced. This should be a brutal night for metal fans, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details as they roll in!
We'll close today with some new videos, starting with the latest original song from former Sense of Truth/Skeyes of Seven frontman Cory Murchison's YouTube channel, as posted there earlier this month. Entitled "Breaking Free", Cory says that this is about "breaking out of old habits and freeing ourselves from society's hold", and if you missed his heavier regular sound after his surprise "Love Yourself" cover, you'll be more at home here! Very bass-heavy, but it's a solid hard rocker that would have fit in one of his local bands, and watch for liberal usage of Facebook or Snapchat video filters while he sings to the camera. Unique touch, so give everything a look below!
Lastly, here's some new acoustic cover videos from local/Elliot Lake punk solo project Ashoka At The Show, as uploaded to project leader Darren MacDonald's YouTube channel last week! After a four month hiatus from new music (partially due to his wife's surgery), Darren has resumed uploading new videos on YouTube, largely reflecting his own gameplay of NHL 20 and his create-a-team, the Halifax Buccaneers, so if that interests you, he's got a lot of that to see! Musically, the two covers are a sped up rendition of Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" (a favourite of his daughter's), and as embedded below, John Denver's "Leavin' On A Jet Plane". These are far removed from his original punk base, especially if you recall the band's live era locally, but Darren's a good singer with clear guitar ability, and he adds a frank honesty on these covers! Give them a look above and below!

Local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns will return to The Whiskey Barrel for headlining dates TOMORROW NIGHT and then on Saturday, September 28th! Apologies for the short notice on the former, it was only announced one week ago today on the venue's Facebook event page, not leaving us time to preview it before it got too soon. After not playing any advertised gigs at this Gore Street bar and restaurant at all in August, these shows TOMORROW and later this month should provide ample opportunity to hear Christina, Rob, and Jesse in their natural element at their recent favourite venue! Hopefully there's no Friday the 13th bad luck TOMORROW, of course. Both shows are 19+ affairs with no cover charges and 8:00 PM start times. Next up, London sludge/post-metal quintet Whoop-Szo will return to the Soo when they headline at Dryer Fire on Bruce Street THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was actually announced via the venue's Facebook event page two weeks ago, but it completely slipped us by at the time. Some fans may recall seeing Whoop-Szo at LopLops in June 2018 at a merged concert following a late relocation from Outspoken Brewing, but I presume their Sault Ste. Marie encore will remain at its original locale. Playing a unique mash-up of metal, psychedlic, and experimental genres, Whoop-Szo's noisy mountain of original music should play well at Dryer Fire on SATURDAY! Hamilton folk/indie rock solo act Zoon will open in their own local debut, and while not as heavy as the headliners, their brand of "mocassingaze" (not shoegaze) originals should turn heads to kick off the night! Notably, this is Dryer Fire's third-to-last concert at their pop-up summer location, and last there with a hard rock act.
No word on if Nicole will re-rent a live events space here or elsewhere in 2020, but I've heard great things about Dryer Fire this year, hopefully there's more in the works! This ALL AGES concert has a $10 cover charge and a 7:00 PM start time THIS SATURDAY, as usual for this venue when not "pay what you can." Also this weekend, local classic/hard rock quartet Soundcheck will join their previously announced Reggie's West concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT with one more car show at the new A&W at 659 Great Northern Road THIS SUNDAY NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice, neither Soundcheck nor car show organizers Northern Lights Cruisers have publically confirmed their involvement online, but band members Terry Eaton and Glen Thomas have both indicated that they'll be playing on SUNDAY via their personal Facebook pages. No strangers to playing outside of the new A&W this summer, the Cruisin' the Dub car show is allegedly A&W's "annual car/bike show", and will feature family games, raffles, and other such entertainment alongside the vehicles and Soundcheck's set. Like with The Soo's Got Talent, all proceeds go to the ARCH Hospice. Of course, if you want a traditional nighttime concert from Soundcheck, keep their Reggie's West shows in mind too!
Note that recent advertising that I have seen for these shows only refer to them as taking place at Reggie's (no West), implying that they may have been moved to Reggie's Place downtown, but Soundcheck's own 2019 concert calendar has always said that they'd be at the Reggievelt. If they were indeed moved, I'll let you know! In any event, those shows are 10:00 PM & 19+ affairs, SUNDAY's car show is at 1:00 PM and is absolutely ALL AGES, and none have a cover charge. Finally for today's previews (Peril are coming tomorrow!), let's tackle a show that fully and entirely had advance notice that we caught, as prolific local experimental/metal solo musician Chase Wigmore will headline a special Rednecks Saloon concert TOMORROW NIGHT to officially launch his new single! A rare headlining appearance from the Awokest frontman, this Friday the 13th event is in honour of Chase's 25 minutes long track "Stray Dog Howl" from his upcoming official studio album "Songs To Punch Yourself In The Face To." Might we hear "Stray Dog Howl" in full along with his other folk/punk acoustic songs tomorrow? "The Ghost of Chase Wigmore", as he's billed here, will be joined by C.T.W. frontman Tyler Gibson's drum & bass side project Alegendary in their apparent live debut, as well as the still-unrevealed "A Misterious Fellow", while folk solo musician Wes Armstrong was quietly added to the bill earlier this month.
Admission for this 19+ concert is on a "pay what you can" model, and an early 7:00 PM start time is advertised. A very diverse lineup has gathered for this one, and hopefully it gives Chase's single the big launch it deserves as we inch closer to his planned CD release on Devil's Night, so don't miss out on all of the action tomorrow! Local classic hard/rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will reportedly end their local run when they headline at Reggie's West TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via the official Facebook event page on Tuesday. Yes, advertising for TOMORROW & SATURDAY's shows indicates that The Millionaires are disbanding after this weekend's bookings, though they have not publically stated a reason for this surprising news. The 3 Day Millionaires have been a steady sight on the local bar circuit for over 2 years now, and they had solid chemistry and a nice long setlist for fans wherever they went, and I just hope their breakup is amicable! For what it's worth, drummer Scott McLurg's old band Turner Up is reuniting for Rotaryfest next month (alongside former Millionaires bandmate Travis Sharpe), but I have seen no reference to that being more than a one-off.
As usual for The 3 Day Millionaires' Reggievelt gigs, TOMORROW & SATURDAY's concerts are 9:30 PM events with no announced cover charges or age limits. Joining his previously announced matinee gig at Gliss Steak & Seafood TOMORROW and nighttime show at Room 21, he'll be playing a special SUNDAY NIGHT concert at the latter venue as part of that venue's Canada Day festivities! Again, apologies for the short notice on the Sunday show, we only learned of it via SooToday's events calendar. Regarding his Gliss shows, the planned Saturday nighter this weekend is not taking place for unannounced reasons, but it could be related to Canada Day weekend event conflicts. As for rumours regarding Gliss' future at the Quality Inn, I will wait until there's public confirmation before elaborating here, but see Tym there TOMORROW, just in case! As for SUNDAY, Tym's personal Facebook page implied that he'd have two shows on Canada Day, but I have seen no public reference to the second, so it may be a private booking, and wouldn't be covered here as a result.
Of course, tomorrow's Room 21 show is part of their new Finger Food Friday theme nights for you appetizer fans, while SUNDAY'S show is timed so attendees above Low & Slow can see the fireworks, so keep that in mind to kick off the month! Tomorrow's shows are at 6:00 PM (Gliss) and 10:00 PM (Room 21), while the Canada Day show there has a special 8:00 PM start time. Moving to shows that were entirely previously announced, we'll next head to Outspoken Brewing at 350 Queen Street East for our first ever concert preview there, as London "true-psych/post-metal' quintet Whoop-Szo will rock Sault Ste. Marie for the first time TOMORROW NIGHT! With a creative hybrid sound melding experimental, post-punk, folk, and psychedelic sounds into one package, as well as socially conscious lyrics, Whoop-Szo should have a little something for everyone while bringing enough heavy sounds to make SMS fans happy tomorrow! The opening act is Hamilton garage rock band Billy Moon, who have some punk influences in older material, and have an up-tempo indie vibe that should be a nice match tomorrow as well! A rare hard rock headline booking from Ears & Eyes, this concert will be held at the aforementioned craft brewery on Queen Street East beside Shabby Motley Handcraft, and with bookings ramping up there, it'll be interesting to see what else comes to Outspoken Brewing!
Tickets for this 19+ concert can be bought online at this link for $10 (there's no stated hike for admission at the door), and a 9:00 PM start time is advertised. Finally for today's concert preview post, we'll take a detour to St. Ignace, where Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Cousin Eddie are slated to return to The Northern Pines Lounge at St. Ignace's Kewadin Casino branch TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! After a 3+ month hiatus from announced public concerts, the Highway 63 sister band should have another entertaining weekend of live cover action in store for patrons in the southeast U.P., so consider a trip to the St. Ignace Kewadin to see the guys in action this weekend! Note that Cousin Eddie have not confirmed these bookings on their Facebook page, nor have they posted on there yet this year, but the venue has advertised them right along. As usual for Kewadin lounge bookings, these are 9:00 PM concerts with 21+ age limits and no announced cover charge. London "true-psych/post-metal' quintet Whoop-Szo will make their local concert debut on Friday, June 29th when they headline at... Outspoken Brewing?! Yes, the craft brewery at 350 Queen Street East (beside Shabby Motley Handcraft) doubles as a venue for live events, but this is the first time that an SMS-fitting concert has ever taken place there that I'm aware of. Whoop-Szo will definitely deliver a unique sound to the local stage at the end of next month, with electronic, psychedelic, folk, and sludge influences in their experimental "noisy mountain", but they are definitely heavy enough to appeal to genre fans, so keep their set in mind! Hamilton garage rock band Billy Moon will open in their own local debut, and with an accessible, lo-fi brand of original material in store (maybe even some guided meditation), they should attract an audience next month as well! Advance tickets for this (presumably) 19+ concert are $10, and can be bought online at this link, though a potential hike at the door isn't stated on the Facebook event page.

With his long-term weekly run of acoustic matinees wrapping up another month this weekend, prepare for more unplugged hard rock and classic rock covers at this downtown locale over these two evenings from this local music veteran! Also this weekend, we'll head south to Brimley, Michigan, where Munising hard rock quartet Infathom will travel for a headlining concert at The Back Bay Grill & Games at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! This infrequently seen group (fronted by former Saultite Dillion Semasky) will be making their first E.U.P. concert appearance of 2018 on Saturday, though fans will have seen them open for Theory of a Deadman in the Soo in December, and previously at Pickles Bar & Grill in Brimley last fall. This will be Infathom's debut at the waterfront nightclub at "your perfect up north retreat", and their hard hitting covers and originals should provide a Memorial Day weekend spark, so keep their Back Bay Grill show in mind for Saturday! Note that this concert does not conflict with former Nudge frontman Danzo McCracken's advertised acoustic gig on Saturday, he's playing in the Northwoods Lounge at Bay Mills that night (and tomorrow.)
This 21+ concert has no announced cover charge, and has an advertised start time of 10:00 PM. Finally, I wanted to acknowledge an event taking place TOMORROW NIGHT at Room 21 in Sault Ontario entitled Jiannipaloozahtoo (The Sequel), which curiously has no publically advertised bands, so what is there to say about it? Well, first off, apologies for the short notice, it was only announced via it's official Facebook event page yesterday. Jiannipaloozahtoo has nothing (visibly) to do with the reunited Gianni Gagoots, as it is actually the belated sequel to prolific local metal/punk drummer Johnny Belanger's 2016 birthday concert at The Oddfellows Hall (entitled "Johnny B.'s #Litfam Birthday Sheezy".) The event page indicates that Room 21 are going to "bring together a bunch of instruments" and host "musical performances from everyone", with drink specials also planned to be offered. The lack of an announced performer lineup suggests that this may be more of an informal jam session event with performers coming and going, but the event page's confirmed attendees may shed light onto who's playing tomorrow!
For reference, Johnny's 2016 "birthday sheezy" featured his bands The Bear Hunters and Jack Spades alongside Winkstinger, the dormant Exploring Detritus, and the now-defunct Eclipse and Heavy Head, while Johnny has since joined Stegadeth and Handsome Sandwich. That said, Room 21 hasn't been a haven for extreme metal since launching last year, with smaller and acoustic acts being the norm, so I would imagine this will be a whole different animal than 2 years ago. In any event, hopefully Johnny has a great birthday bash with his second "paloozah", I imagine a fun night of music is in store from him and his friends tomorrow night!

No word as of yet regarding the First Jason concert on April 26th, but absolutely stay tuned for updates. Just in case anyone was wondering, I am not listing Tym Morrison's usual weekly matinee shows at Gliss or Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished's Thursday matinees at Biggby Coffee until we hear from either venue that their dine-in operations have resumed. I would have been mentioning their April slates in this weekend's concert previews, had we had any shows to preview, so I just wanted to be clear and up front regarding those weekly arrangements. Looking ahead to May, promoters The Diamond Mine Agency have revealed that they have a backup date in place for the Buckcherry concert at Soo Blaster on May 13th if they have to postpone it, so visit the official Facebook event page for more on that front.
Rather than his bass role with The Din and at the 2015 release party, Mike is playing live guitar this time, with A Dire Setback bassist Matt Quinn rounding out the apparent trio lineup in May. Solid and talented choice, though will this be the second release concert that Matt's involved with in a two month span to be postponed due to the coronavirus? I sincerely hope not, but Mike did elaborate on much of the above notes in this new Facebook video embedded below, where he also revealed that there could be a live-streamed event of some kind on May 15th if the concert is postponed, and he even teased plans to film a music video for a single from the album in the Soo if things level out. In any event, he is teasing a new single release and more info about the songwriting in the interim.
