Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile: S.C.A.R.

After a one month break to update past profiles and let our cache restock, the Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile Series returns tonight! This month, we'll take a look at a Southern Ontario duo featuring an artist recently added to SMS coverage that should attract some attention for their sound! Remember, this series outlines and profiles bands that, though not locally based, features at least one member who has claimed a past or present local residence! Hopefully this comes out well and factual, but as always, if there's something incorrect, missing, or lacking info/details, please tell me! Now, let's begin this month's profile! (UPDATED: November 26th, 2014)

Local Info: Mike Haggith has been plying his trade as a musician since the late 1990s through his various band and solo projects. Though a native of Windsor, Mike and his solo project are currently based out of Sault Ste. Marie while he attends Sault College in the Aviation program. His local work has increased in visibility since, including drumming work with Haggith and The Strange Coyotes, fronting the acid rock band Mike Haggith & The Din, and playing in various other jam/cover bands! With 47 other solo albums already released, Mike's definitely a musician to watch, but he's also made waves in Windsor-area bands like The Thorns, The Air, Psytrious, and S.C.A.R., among many others!

Band Bio: Guitarist Dylon Rabidoux formed S.C.A.R. circa 2005, releasing their debut "Destruction Is Good" in March of that year. After Mike Haggith joined, the band began releasing frequent albums for online distribution beginning with 2006's "A Streetcar Named Desire/Don't Know Why". Since then, S.C.A.R. self-released 42 official "albums", not counting singles, including their last album, the live set "Concentrated Piss" in January 2010. Though mostly a two piece throughout their existence, S.C.A.R. later enlisted additional members for live performances. In their early years, S.C.A.R. took a more comedic angle, calling their genre "piss" and claiming to be from Nairobi, though more recent works have taken a more straightforward take on their music, while playing a wide variety of styles in their albums from the past 5 years. After a breakup for much of 2010, S.C.A.R. reformed in January 2011 & played a few live dates, and though later activity was littered with breakup teases, a new free "album" was posted online in June 2013, and new recording sessions were teased last year as well.

With such an expansive discography and amount of songs from S.C.A.R., it'd be impossible to reliably comment on the band as a whole, but from what I've heard, I do enjoy what Mike and Dylon have done musically! I find that Mike's singing is more diverse than what I've heard solo, with heavier metal tracks and trippier stoner songs showing a vocal versatility that'd be interesting to hear more! Dylon's guitar work was very good, he has an ear for heavy riffs and has some really nice guitar solos, like on "Not In Yo Attic", for example! I do think S.C.A.R. could benefit from including Mike's guitar playing more on their originals, but Dylon handles things well! The drumming suits the songs, and the bass is pretty good, the guys know what they're doiing! S.C.A.R.'s material is a mixed bag, but like with Mike's solo work, there is something for everyone! Some songs are bit more offbeat than others, like "California", but on songs like "Great Oden's Adventure", things will definitely be more attractive for fans of aggressive music! The above links have a sample of what S.C.A.R. have to offer, so see what's there that you'd like, and here's their most recent live video from March 2011!

There we go, another out of town band gets a deserved look on the SMS! What band will be profiled in our first Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile of 2011? Well, I have decided to take a look at the (I think) final out of town project from Woods of Ypres' own David Gold that we haven't profiled yet, that being Cochenour, Ontario black metal duo The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society! That completes our "every third month" schedule of his band's profiles, so watch out for this one between January 14th and 20th! That's all for tonight, but I have more local metal news and updates coming tomorrow night, so keep an eye out! Thanks everyone!
