We have a busy weekend upon us for local hard rock, metal, and punk concerts, so we're breaking up this weekend's previews into two posts (maybe three?), starting primarily with Thursday and Friday nighters in this post. That said, we have SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS involved here, so here's what you should know, and there's more to come! (Updated at 10:28 PM)
Local classic/hard rock trio Mourning Wood's jam night series at The Rednecks Saloon will continue into the month of May, including TONIGHT'S ninth straight weekly installment! Apologies for the short notice, we were waiting for online confirmation before adding the May dates to our schedule, which came via bassist Steven Flint's personal Facebook page yesterday. As such, we'll now list likely jam nights from this popular newer band for Thursday, May 14th, 21st, and 28th as well, but remember, we're taking these a month at a time so as not to overload our concert listings or assume anything regarding their scheduling. Mourning Wood should be raring to go TONIGHT with some often heavy and fun covers, and remember, as it's a jam night, fans are more than welcome to jump on stage and play along with them, so keep that angle in mind!
Also, unless there's a New A matinee in the works, Mourning Wood will not be playing a regular show this weekend due to the band's involvement promoting tomorrow's Redneck Rock show (more on that in a bit) and Steven's show with Beaumont Avenue on Saturday (look for that preview tomorrow.) TONIGHT's jam night, on the other hand, has a 9:30 PM start time, no announced cover, and a 19+ age limit. See above for more details, and here's Mourning Wood live last year!
Also in new concert announcements, another popular classic/hard rock band will hit The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW NIGHT, as Havadder will take the stage for one night only! Apologies again for the short notice, this show was announced on Monday via it's Facebook event page, so we held it for our weekend previews. Fresh off a busy weekend at The Rednecks Saloon, this will be Havadder's first Rockstar Bar show in a month, and while they aren't playing on Saturday due to the Beaumont Avenue concert (more on that tomorrow), Havadder should have at 'er with a great night of hard hitting covers TOMORROW NIGHT! And yes, the full lineup is presumably expected, following Scott McLurg's absence on Saturday. This 19+ show has no announced cover (but bring cash just in case), and a 10:30 PM start time is advertised. See above for more details, and here's Havadder last year at The Rednecks Saloon!
Moving to previously announced concerts, the aforementioned Rednecks Saloon will welcome another collection of original bands to their stage TOMORROW NIGHT for Redneck Rock! Promoted by Mourning Wood's Terry Eaton & Steven Flint (possibly as a spiritual successor to Sault Band-O-Rama?), this show will reunite four of the bands from March's VM Radio Battle of the Bands for a night of hard rock and alternative action, so who all is playing? In descending order, we'll see local death metal quartet The Bear Hunters headlining at 1:00 AM, with local post-punk quartet Gnaeus (in their first Rednecks set since last summer) co-headlining at 12:00 AM, local classic metal quartet Project 421 (in their last gig with drummer Larry Mousseau) at 11:00 PM, and all-female punk/hard rock quartet The Danger Cats (in their first show since the battle) kicking things off at 10:00 PM.
Nice diverse lineup with something for all tastes, and while it may seem odd that Gnaeus aren't headlining given their recent battle wins, that will be remedied at Swampfest on Saturday! And this will be fans' chance to say goodbye to Larry too, so give him a rocking sendoff at the former Nicolet Tavern tomorrow! Tickets are $5 through band members or $7 at the door, you must be 19 to attend, and sound is being provided by Terry & Steve's company Twin City Entertainment. This should be a very fun show, so for more details on Redneck Rock, visit the above links, and here's The Bear Hunters there last month!
Finally for today, we'll head across the river to the E.U.P., where Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Ten Kings will return to the stage TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino! After taking the month of April off from public concerts, this newer band featuring Nixxon Dixxon, Scofflaw, Exiled, and Bottom Line alumni should be back in their usual rocking mode for tonight's shows, so look for Ten Kings to deliver a great weekend of classic favourites in St. Ignace over these two nights! No word yet on future gigs though, but we do await Kewadin Casino's schedule updates for their regional concert calendars. Both of this weekend's Ten Kings shows have no announced cover charge, 9:00 PM start times, and 21+ age limits. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and here's Ten Kings live earlier this year!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for more weekend concert previews TOMORROW! Thanks everyone!
