New Quarantunes From Mikey & His Uke, Plus Lots Of SMS Link Updates!!

For this 84th straight daily post at the SMS, we're continuing our link cleanup that populated our post on Saturday, but let's start with the latest quarantune cover videos from Mikey (Hawdon) & his uke! Since we last looked at the local punk music veteran's daily ukelele covers on his YouTube channel, Mikey has posted seven new ones in the past week. Unusually for this current stage of the quarantune series, only two of these videos feature guests beyond Mikey and editor/sometime percussionist Dean Glover, but Dean did spice up the solo videos in varying ways! The new solo videos feature Mikey & his uke covering Madonna's "Material Girl", 2 Unlimited's "No Limit", The Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl", Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" (featuring many familiar faces in the included photos), and Stompin' Tom Connors' "Algoma Central 69", which should please Inner City Surfers fans in particular. That said, what about the videos featuring special guests?

One is a cover of The Spice Girls' "Stop" featuring four female musicians who have guested in prior quarantunes (I'll let you figure out which spice is which), but embedded below is video #83 from Friday, where Mikey is joined by his Surfers bandmates Dustin Jones, Dave Bahun, and Brad Example for a special rendition of "Booze N' Doobs"! Mikey is even included a second time in the top right on "drums", which is a nice touch. Fun and loose cover, as all of these are in their own way, so give all of Mikey's 85 quarantunes to date a watch above and below, and stay tuned for more tomorrow!

Finally for today, here's nine assorted shorter updates, all via recent changes and deletions to our link sections on the SMS, relating to bands, concert venues, and more. As usual, these are in alphabetical order by band, venue, event, or business name:

  • I have changed the link in our inactive concert venue listings for local natural foods restaurant and occasional concert venue Cafe Natura from their now-closed website to their Facebook page. However, Cafe Natura abruptly closed in June of last year, and has since been replaced at 75 Elgin Street by Georgie's Shawarma, which I don't believe has hosted live concerts. Kelly seemed to have a good thing going with Cafe Natura, and hopefully she and the former staff are in good spirits nowadays!
  • I have removed Foggy Notions from our inactive concert venue listings as well due to the deletion of their Facebook (and last known surviving) online page. Of course, 708 Queen Street East has hosted Coch's Corner since it's move from the Days Inn in 2012, albeit with a much softer range of live music, and hopefully more concerts will occur there in time when things settle down!
  • I have removed local music store Grooves Music from our "Other Sault Michigan Metal Links" section due to the deletion of it's Facebook page within the past year. The long-time 540 Ashmun Street business was sold to new owners in 2017 and re-opened as Crooked Music, before moving across the road to 539 Ashmun last year. Head to Crooked Music for all of your instrument, lesson, and vinyl needs, though use common sense given the pandemic!
  • I have deleted Hempfest from our listing of local concert festivals due to the closure of their Facebook page in recent years, which was the annual marijuana culture/concert festival's last known online page. Readers may recall this annual event at the current Northern Vibe Festival site in Ophir, Ontario from 1999-2013 (save 2010) before organizers held it's last three installments in Moonbeam. Hopefully Robert, Willy-Jack, and everyone who made Hempfest possible are still doing well nowadays!
  • I have changed the link for defunct local band management & promotion company New Era Design & Development in our "Other Sault Ontario Metal Links" section from their now-closed website to their Facebook page. Derek had solid ambition with New Era, including a working relationship with local hard rock band Stillbroke circa 2010, but their later activity was centered on digital media before New Era fell inactive by 2013.
  • I have removed 2005 all-female alternative/punk trio Nowhere Fast from our defunct band links due to the quiet deletion of their Tripod (and only surviving) online page at some point in the past year. It would have been interesting to see Nowhere Fast make more of a local presence during their brief run, but hopefully their members are still musically active!
  • I have removed mid-2000s punk band Oceania from our defunct band links due to the closure of BandSpace, which hosted their last surviving band page until that website quietly shut down three years ago. Oceania were a promising act, and hopefully LaR, Dilbert, and Chris re-emerge with new music down the road!
  • I have replaced early 2010s punk/classical trio RedD Monkey's (sadly) deleted Facebook page in our band links with their Bandcamp page, which still hosts copies of their three studio albums. Steve, Pete, Kevin, and Joe have been missed locally in the last few years, and hopefully we hear of new music from them in the future!
  • I have changed the link for defunct local nightclub/concert venue Smack Daddy's Bar & Grill (a.k.a. Bossy's Pub N' Grub) in our inactive venue listings from their now deleted Facebook group to their Smack Daddy's-era Facebook page. Sporadically active as a concert venue through 2011, Smack Daddy's closed in 2014, as the building was bought by new owners, torn down, and replaced by what's now Pim Street Dental. Hopefully they're doing strong business there, it's a good location!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this week! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: gunghoguy & bummer2112

Here's this month's YouTube Channel Profiles for you guys to check out! As usual, this monthly feature series looks at 1-3 randomly selected YouTube channels (2 this month) whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk bands or concerts, in order to spotlight their uploads and encourage readers to check them our and/or subscribe to them! This month's random choices are our first double dip of 2018, due to the first only having 4 videos from 2 distinct events, so a single video channel was added to fill things out. Punk fans should find something to like here, so here's what you should know for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
james whalen (http://www.youtube.com/channel/gunghoguy

Owner: Former Polly Pockets Melting In A Microwave drummer and Motion Carried bassist Jamie (or James) Whalen

Channel Timeline: Launched on January 1st, 2008; Videos posted from August 2010 through March 2015

Channel Summary: This personal use channel is mostly devoted to videos of Jamie's local punk band Polly Pockets Melting In The Microwave (a.k.a. PPMM, PPM², or Polly) playing live in the early 2000s, but his final upload there was of a Modern Minds song with no direct local ties.

Why You Should Watch: As a slice of the local punk scene from a decade and a half ago, this is well worth a watch, whether you're familiar with Polly or not, and it captures some young and energetic performances well for the era! However, note that Jamie has not visibly updated this channel in almost three years, nor has he included material from later bands of his.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out

Polly Pocket's Meltin' In the Microwave - talk to me summer (screeching weasel cover): Two of Jamie's P.P.M.M. videos come from a 2001 concert at The Elks Hall opening for Operation Makeout, where they covered D.B.S.' "Sunday" (featuring Operation Makeout & D.B.S. singer Jesse Gander on guest vocals!), and as featured here, The Screeching Weasels' instrumental "Talk To Me Summer", the most viewed of the four Polly clips. Featuring Jamie alongside future Stripped Of His Wings singer Matt Parent, guitarist Steve Mogg, and bassist Ivan St. Jules, the video isn't an optimal look at the guys due to Matt's lack of vocals, the (intentionally?!) low framerate of the video and fans obscuring view of the band, but this is a solid rendition! Though less popular, the D.B.S. cover is better quality.

polly - look back and laugh (minor threat cover): James' other PPM² videos are from a show at an unclear venue on February 24th, 2002, where they covered Face to Face's "Blind" and, as featured here, Minor Threat's "Look Back & Laugh", both filmed by "Kerry & Fluff". These side-stage videos are by far the best look at Polly Pockets Melting In The Microwave on the channel, thanks to vocal presence, angle, and normal framerate, and they deliver nicely for fans of fast paced modern punk rock! Hopefully the guys will turn up in new bands when the time is right!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe Bumbacco (http://www.youtube.com/bummer2112)

Owner: Former RedD Monkey, The Fury, and Devastation of the Heavens drummer Joe Bumbacco, most recent seen with the Toronto grind/sludge metal band Theriac

Channel Timeline: Launched on July 12th, 2006; Video posted on November 22nd, 2010

Channel Summary: Joe's only video comes from defunct local/Toronto/Kelowna classical/hardcore punk trio RedD Monkey's November 2010 concert at The Oddfellows Hall where they opened for Total Chaos, with attendee Darcie Piche filming this clip of their song "Monkey's Paw (5th Wish of the Swamp Donkey)", which was on their debut EP "Thought Control Tower" from earlier that year. The incomplete clip captures one of Joe's earlier live gigs with RedD Monkey, alongside singer/guitarist Steve Mozarowski and his brother Pete on the cello. Though the inconsistent and largely dark lighting doesn't help matters, this is a vibrant performance of one of RedD Monkey's earlier songs from their more experimental punk beginnings! Though Joe still uses this channel for personal use here and there, no videos followed, but other channels have far more from their run.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! Next month in this series, our new random selection will be defunct all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats' YouTube channel, featuring 13 videos from their local heyday, so look for that on or around March 26th, and stay tuned for more news and notes in the coming days, including this month's CD review! Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: RedD Monkey

Here's this month's Defunct Local Band Profile on The Sault Metal Scene! Our monthly spotlight feature on one or two disbanded or inactive local bands (one this month, all randomly selected) brings us to a prominent punk band from the early 2010s that definitely made some waves with their high energy and unique sound! Read on below for what you should know!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RedD Monkey

Genre: Hardcore Punk

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (previously Kelowna, British Columbia and Toronto, Ontario)

Members: (Members not in their last full lineup in italics. This information is incomplete, particularly regarding the identity of their original bassist seen here. If you can confirm his identity, let us know!)

Steve Mozarowski (Smeltzer, Faceityoureametalband), vocals/guitar
Pete Mozarowski, cello
Joe Bumbacco (Theriac, The Fury), drums

Christopher Langevin (Dodge City Death Warrant), drums
Kevin Overton (Exploring Detritus, Smeltzer), drums
?????, bass

Audio/Video: RedD Monkey released three studio albums, including their 2010 debut EP "Thought Control Tower", their 2012 full length album "All Baroque", and their posthumous final EP "Opus 2: Untitled" in 2015. While no longer are in print, all can be streamed via their YouTube channel and/or Bandcamp page, though the former doesn't have "Opus 2" or "Dr. Fatty" from their first EP, and the latter doesn't have their One Day As A Lion cover from "All Baroque". A number of live videos from their run can be found on YouTube, most notably from the channels RedDMonkeyMusic, cammicam, and saultmetalscene, among others. Here's RedD Monkey live here in 2013!

Info/Analysis: Launching out in Kelowna back in 2009 (though they would move to Ontario not long after), RedD Monkey brought a unique brand of punk to fans that was reminiscent of frontman Steve Mozarowski's prior local band work, but the inclusion of his brother Pete on cello helped ensure that they stood out here & abroad until the band went on hiatus in 2014. Keeping a stable lineup aside from drummer changes & their initial quartet lineup upon their debut, RedD Monkey mounted multiple tour runs across the province and country, often in support of their first two CDs. Local fans will recognize them from such high profile gigs as December 2009's Algoma University Battle of the Bands (where they finished third), 2010's Rotaryfest Second Stage & Soo Zombie Walk afterparty, 2011's Clusterfolk festival, and the first three Swampstravaganzas. The band was last seen on a local stage in December 2013, though they played a one-off reunion show in Toronto in 2015, and Pete remains locally active in varying music projects.

A fan favourite attraction locally throughout the early 2010s, RedD Monkey built on prior Smeltzer success with a creative blend of classical cello instrumentation, alternative/punk rock, and even some rap, with the band's sound getting heavier and faster with age to boot! Steve was a commanding presence as usual on vocals and guitar, Pete's cello work was welcomed and unique, and they always had solid drummers with clear chemistry, particularly Joe in their later years. Hopefully we see RedD Monkey back in the future, but be sure to follow members' current projects here and abroad!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! To end the year in this series, our random selection gave us a Sault Ontario project with not enough material to cover a full profile for the first time since March, so I've added a Sault Michigan profile to round things out, ending another 2-1-3-1-2-1 cycle for this series. As such, we'll be looking at defunct local punk band Oceania and Highway 63 guitarist Nathan Switzer's solo project next, so look for them on or around December 10th, and stay tuned for more news on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

RedD Monkey - "Thought Control Tower" Review!!

Without any further adieu, it's now time for our 84th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, and without a new hard rock or metal release to look at, let's dive into the archives for our latest pick! To tie in with local death metal band Kaepora Gaebora's gig opening for Foam earlier this month, we have chosen drummer Kevin Overton's defunct local/Toronto/Victoria punk band RedD Monkey's debut EP "Thought Control Tower" for a long overdue review this time! Independently released on June 1st, 2010 (prior to the band's partial relocation to the Soo), and reissued in 2013 with a new cover, "Though Control Tower" was recorded with producer, engineer, and ex-No Arrow bassist Brad Griffith, likely locally at Green Room Productions, though that isn't specifically stated online. RedD Monkey are represented here by singer/guitarist Steve Mozarowski, his brother Pete on cello and backing vocals, and Kevin Overton (Steve's former Smeltzer bandmate) on drums.

Though now out of print, "Thought Control Tower" is available on a "name your price" model via RedD Monkey's Bandcamp page, and the whole EP can be streamed on the band's YouTube channel (song names below are linked from there), but consider paying for it to support their work! With 7 tracks running for just 15 minutes in length, let's begin our look at RedD Monkey's debut CD with the first song!

"The Clock's Dement" kicks off this EP with minimalist cello playing by Pete before the band slowly kicks in for this mid-tempo punk rocker that benefits from a nice melodic rhythm, strong instrumentation, and a nice chemistry, but it lacks the fast paced fury of many later RedD Monkey songs, and Steve's vocals come across as very melancholy. Strong lyrics and, at the time, the novelty of cello in a punk song help keep this one worth listening to! Next is "Friar's Ire", the disc's longest song (at a whopping 2:38), which has the familiar stop/start guitar riff, nicely blended and performed cello, and steady drumming, adding to a very catchy song that reminds me of a hybrid of their usual style with a rock radio song. That said, it's not really more aggressive than "The Clock's Dement", but it's a stronger musical package, and it builds well to it's conclusion!

Third is "Lethargic Rampage", which has a nice up-tempo alternative sound with arguably the heaviest guitar work yet, a solid tandem of the guitar and cello on riffs, and Steve's most varied vocal performance yet on "Thought Control Tower", finally hitting some louder and higher notes late. However, the song feels incomplete, with minimal lyric sections and the sense that they could have went further to extend and round out this track, but it's still an early highlight! The EP's shortest song is next, namely "Fight Skateboard with Fire!", which is one of the band's most familiar early originals (especially for the "Whoa oooh" choruses), and despite it's early runtime, packs in an extended cello solo from Pete. This is a song that I found worked better live for RedD Monkey, especially with a live crowd to feed off of and a generally faster, heavier bite in that setting, but it's a fun, if short, number with quality drumming and a good rhythm!

The EP's fifth track is "No Teeth & A Lazy Eye", which makes steady and downbeat use of Pete's cello throughout this morose yet punk-edged song that still manages to escalate in impact up to the end of it's runtime, which ends fairly abruptly compared to other songs on this disc. It's not my favourite song on "Thought Control Tower", but fans will like the classical-influenced punk attack here, and everyone plays to their strengths! The last advertised song (on original pressings, at least) is "The Attic", which shares the most similarities with RedD Monkey's later "All Baroque" material from it's hardcore-influenced bridge, but otherwise fits with this EP's tone, with a steady, upbeat rhythm, good chemistry from the guys, well utilized cello, and Kevin's solid drumming! Though likely coincidental, I've always found that the post-chorus riffs here bear a resemblance to "Rebel Scum" by The Fury, the then-band from Steve & Kevin's old Smeltzer bandmate Paul Stanghetta.

Originally an unlisted bonus track on the CD release (though it's fully advertised in digital form), "Thought Control Tower" closes with "Fo' Dozen Cookies", possibly best known as RedD Monkey's rap song, with Steve not playing guitar and instead focusing on spitting rhymes. Doubling as a loose recipe for four dozen cookies (what else?), this song works better than you'd expect, with Pete and Kevin providing a good beat, and Steve showcasing real skill as a rapper in the process!

So, what are the final thoughts of "some metalhead" on RedD Monkey's debut CD? Overall, "Thought Control Tower" is a successful first outing from this unique trio, succeeding Steve & Kevin's Smeltzer work with good humour and a nice classical edge! Especially in a local sense, the idea of combining punk or alternative music with a cello was an extreme novelty six years ago, but they made it work, with Pete Mozarowski serving as de facto bassist, classical soloist, and rap beat maker where need be! Kevin Overton was solid on drums in his only studio appearance with RedD Monkey, and of course, Steve Mozarowski maintained his familiar and likable musical presence with melodic vocals and strong punk guitar work! Songs like "Friar's Ire" and "Lethargic Rampage" remaining among their original highlights, but the EP is over quick, lacks the hardcore bent that populates their follow-up "All Baroque", and at times, is sorely lacking the spontaneity and environment of a live concert.

"Thought Control Tower" is a solid first effort for RedD Monkey that feels like a bridge between Smeltzer and "All Baroque" in some respects, and it's a fun listen for fans of punk, alternative, the cello, and even a little rap, so definitely check it out at the above links! I hope you guys liked this month's CD review, but what's coming next month? All I can say at this point is that it will be a new CD, and at the moment, Dafter, Michigan hard rock solo musician SweetKenny is looking likely, as we'll be past our 6 month anti-bias buffer next month since our review of "The Hitman Files" in January. If that is the case, his April solo album "In Your Face" would be this month's review choice, as it's his only non-film score album yet this year in his prolific release schedule. With that said, this isn't a given, and he may be bumped pending the potential release of a bigger local album in July, so we'll let you know either way next month, and stay tuned for weekend concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: RedDMonkeyMusic's Channel

With news coming in slowly, and because I don't want to rush a post when we'll be previewing this weekend's concerts shortly, we'll bump this month's YouTube Channel Profile up a day to ensure we won't go three days without a new post at the SMS! This monthly feature series looks at 1-3 randomly selected YouTube channels featuring local metal, hard rock, and/or punk-relevant videos as at least half of their posted content, in order to spotlight their content and encourage readers to check out their videos and maybe subscribe! This month's random selection features lots of solid footage of a missed local band on the out-of-town stage, so read on for this month's YouTube Channel Profile!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RedDMonkeyMusic's Channel (http://www.youtube.com/reddmonkeymusic)

Owner: A member of defunct local/Toronto/Kelowna hardcore punk/classical trio RedD Monkey, identity unclear (though likely one of the Mozarowski brothers)

Channel Timeline: Launched on November 4th, 2009; Videos posted on December 6th, 2011

Channel Summary: The first official YouTube channel from RedD Monkey, this channel features seven videos from four separate concerts during their February 2011 tour run in Southern Ontario alongside defunct local hard rock duo Sounds From The Green Room. The videos include two each from shows in Ottawa & Peterborough, and three from Toronto (with a sliver from Tillsonburg in one of the Toronto videos.) With one exception, each video captures at least two songs performed at the given concert, though regrettably, watermarks from the trial version of the converter program that these videos went through are a common presence.

Why Should You Watch: You should give this channel a look for some solid and fun videos from RedD Monkey's late-era heyday, capturing both older punk and more explosive newer songs, including a few scattered covers, and some songs that RedD Monkey never recorded in studio! Note however that the band hasn't visibly used the channel in almost four years, and there are no videos from shows outside of this tour or of any other content, but this later channel features studio copies of most songs from their first two CDs. Also, there are no performance clips of Sounds From The Green Room's sets, despite getting multiple references within.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

RedD Monkey - Wild International & Zombie Epoch.avi: The most viewed video on this channel is one of two from RedD Monkey's concert at The Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa on February 21st, 2011, joining this video of the guys playing "Lethargic Rampage", the unreleased original "Broken Parts", and a cover of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades". Here, we see singer/guitarist Steve Mozarowski, cellist Pete Mozarowski, and drummer Joe Bumbacco covering One Day As A Lion's "Wild International" and playing their own song "Zombie Epoch", which shows the guys' disparate influences well, going from rap to hardcore punk without missing a beat, and Steve's casual stage presence is welcomed! The audio & camera angle is good, but the lighting is too dark, and I'm not entirely sure of the impetus of the "box" references. For a review of this concert, visit this link!

RedD Monkey - Fifth Wish of the Swamp Donkey & Turbo Sled.avi: Next on RedD Monkey's tour was a stop at The Spill in Peterborough on February 22nd, 2011, which also saw two videos shot for this channel, including their cello rap number "Fo' Dozen Cookies" by itself, and this video of the guys playing "Monkey's Paw (5th Wish of the Swamp Donkey)" and "Turbosledt 2027", which would be released on their "All Baroque" CD with their final titles the next year. While lighting (and the watermark) is still an issue on these videos, the brick walls do add a faux-sepia tint to the proceedings, and the audio is as solid as before! Stay tuned at the end for Sounds From The Green Room's discovery of a green room at the venue!

RedD Monkey - The Attic, Fight Skate, Losing Friends, The Clocks Dement, Jock Song.avi: The other three videos on this channel come from RedD Monkey's concert at the old Rancho Relaxo in Toronto on February 23rd, 2011, including this video of the guys playing "Friar's Ire" & "Bog", and this video of them playing "No Teeth & A Lazy Eye" & their cover of Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff", though the latter half of that song is taken from their show at Norma Jean's in Tillsonburg the next day, that concert's only feature on the channel. Featured here is a video with no less than five songs from the Toronto gig, including "The Attic", "Fight Skateboard With Fire!", the unreleased "Losing Friends", "The Clock's Dement", and a cover of Steve's old band Smeltzer's "The Jock Song". Strongly done as usual (especially for fans of the "Thought Control Tower" EP), and with the best lighting yet, but the attendees can get in the way of seeing the band.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! Next month in this series, we'll look at former Intrepid guitarist Nick Pavlat's YouTube channel (featuring 13 solo performance videos from about 2 years ago),  which gives us just enough to do a full profile, our second of a Sault Michigan artist's solo covers in a three month span! This should go up on the site on November 22nd as usual, so look for it then, and stay tuned for weekend concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

RedD Monkey - "Opus 2: Untitled" Review!!

With a slow stretch for recent news, let's get our 75th monthly CD review on the site a little earlier than usual, as we're taking a look at defunct local/Toronto punk/classical trio RedD Monkey's third and final album "Opus 2: Untitled", marking our first RedD Monkey album review on the SMS! Posthumously released via their Bandcamp page on Sunday (complete with song lyrics), this album was recorded with producer/Infinity Grinder frontman Brad Griffith in the winter of 2012-13, and previewed at a Toronto concert in June 2013, but was never completed before the band went on hiatus early last year. Like on 2012's "All Baroque" (a.k.a. "Opus 1"), RedD Monkey are represented here by singer/guitarist Steve Mozarowski, his brother Pete Mozarowski on the cello & backing vocals, and Joe Bumbacco on drums, while "Mister" is credited for guest keyboard parts, and "Squid" is credited for lyrics on the last song, though neither's full identity is given.

"Opus 2: Untitled" was never officially completed, but it's nine finished tracks (running for just 23 minutes in length) can be bought on Bandcamp under a "name your price" model, and streamed free there too, but consider buying it to support their work, even posthumously! However, unless RedD Monkey gets back together down the road, I wouldn't hold my breath for physical copies. Now, let's begin our review of "Opus 2" with song #1!

The album begins with the curiously titled "Billy Corgan (On Aids w/ Heroin)", which seems to have allusions to personal conflict & uncertainty. Opening with Joe going to town on the drums, the song soon descends to RedD Monkey's aggressive late-era style (especially compared to songs on "Thought Control Tower"), with Steve using his voice well to alternate between hard-edged singing and yelling that suits the track, and Pete's cello adds a nice contrast to the anarchy! Among the band's heavier tracks already, it's fun and hard hitting, and would be great to mosh along with in concert! The second track is "Sparticus" (spelling intentional), a 29 second instrumental that keeps up the hard-hitting vibes of it's predecessor, but is way too short to really be effective other than as a bridge, and for all we know, may have been unfinished from it's original intended form.

It should be noted that the lyrics posted on Bandcamp for "Sparticus" say "Play backwards to hear a message from Satan", implying that they put some backmasked dialogue in it. When I played it backwards in Audacity, I did not make out any discernible speech, so that may have just been filler for that song's lyric section. Third is "Don't Care", which is basically about, well, not caring about anything, though there is an anti-environmental slant early that may some listeners may not like, that is if you take it seriously. Opening with dramatic cello work by Pete with drums slowly building up, the song soon jumps into fast paced punk territory, with Steve spitting lyrics in rapid-fire before singing choruses about how he once cared. Solid energy here (they at least cared about the song!), and this will definitely appeal to hardcore punk fans, but the song strikes me as a little unevenly paced.

Then we have "Johnny Silverhand" (the album's longest song), whose title character is from the RPG series Cyberpunk 2020, so knowledge of those games will help when following the lyrics. A slightly slower song with more of a chugging riff, I like the harmonizing between Steve & Pete on vocals, and the use of loudspeaker news announcements helps set the mood for the story, especially the closing ones, but part of me thinks that a song with a sci-fi storyline like this should sound a little tighter or dramatic. Still a quality song from RedD Monkey though! The 23 second long "Cold Day in Winter" is next, which is simply Steve plucking the guitar alone. There's even less here than on "Sparticus" (perhaps is it a fragment of a song they never finished?) but it is pleasant, and fittingly, it was recorded on a cold day in winter.

Sixth is "Todd", though the title isn't indicative of the lyrics, which are romantic & reflective in tone. Adding to the incongruity, the song itself is heavy and loaded with vocal distortion, with Steve hard to discern without the use of the provided lyrics. Personally, I find the distorted shouting to be detriment to the song, which works best in instrumental sections, as there's nothing drowning them out then. If RedD Monkey had done this with regular singing/yelling, it'd have worked a lot better, but as it stands, it's very uneven. A pair of instrumentals follow, with "SF '95" first (no word on the title's symbolism), and it has a nice steady drum beat from Joe to roll things out with before things get into their usual cello punk intensity, with Joe's cello fitting in well here with a catchy stop/start effect, as well as melodic stretches late. Whether vocals were ever intended for this song, I can't say, but it's a solid instrumental that showcases RedD Monkey's range!

The album's last instrumental (and penultimate song) is "Andromeda", which is a nice driving 43 second number that closes with a 37 second spacey section that does allude to the title galaxy, but it gives the vibe that this was a bridge to more that wasn't added. Not a bad little number though, it's at least on the level of "Sparticus"! The guest-wrote "Cane Toad Cocktail" closes "Opus II", with lyrics alluding to licking a poisonous frog and the aftermath of that choice. Possibly the most reserved song on the album, and more reminiscent in tone to their debut EP, the chorus (which is just the song title recited) isn't overly imaginative, but it's a pleasant number that would probably fit well in an acoustic setting, and it ends the album with some levity! So, what are my final thoughts on RedD Monkey's belated final CD?

Overall, "Opus 2: Untitled" is an uneven but satisfying release that puts some closure to RedD Monkey's run after abrupt fade into inactivity last year, and the guys are on form from past recording sessions and concerts! It definitely feels like the sequel to "All Baroque" in style, continuing their faster and heavier sound with strong cello work from Pete Mozarowski, steady and fast drumming from Joe Bumbacco, and diverse, edgy vocal & guitar work from Steve Mozarowski! I really enjoyed the early songs with vocals the most (especially "Billy Corgan" & "Johnny Silverhand"), but at times, you can tell that this album was incomplete, especially from the presence of four instrumentals (three at 80 seconds or less), especially when they'd only released one instrumental on an album before ("Dr. Fatty" on "All Baroque".) Had the sessions completed as planned, we may have seen those songs fleshed out, or perhaps absent songs included in general.

I also wasn't a fan of the excessive vocal distortion on "Todd", and some songs lacked polish from older releases, but at least we got "Opus 2" in this form rather than not at all, and the online release of it was a welcome surprise! Kudos to Steve, Pete, and Joe for finally putting this online, and hopefully RedD Monkey come back at some point! ! Stream or buy it at the above links! For our next CD review on the site, it's extremely likely that we'll be reviewing "Fed Up!", the three-way split CD from Destroilet, Jack Spades, and Montreal's The Ripcordz, as that album will see it's long-awaited release on October 24th at it's CD release party! However, in the event that personal family matters intervene (the same ones that have slowed down my concert frequency of late) and force me to miss the show and/or not get a copy, we would bump it to November and review a different CD in October, but I hope it won't have to come to that. In any event, stay tuned for more next month, and for weekend concert previews tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

A New Local Band, A Surprise Album Release, A Concert Preview, And More!!

Here's an informative news post for you guys on this Sunday night, including lineup additions for two upcoming concerts, a preview for a special Monday night concert, and a surprising new album posting, but first, here's a new metal band to check out!

We have a new local metal quartet to add to our band links, and they are Debt To The Heirless, who feature a number of familiar faces! Though finite band instrument roles aren't listed yet, their members include ex-Bring The Fallen guitarist Dan Souliere (nice to see him finally back in a new band!), alongside ex-Bring The Misery guitarist Daeson Lesage (who replaced Dan in that band in 2011), Them/Infamous drummer Anthony Boudreau, and ex-Ashoka at the Show drummer Joey Graham, who you may remember as Bring The Fallen's original drummer when they were still known as The Undead Warriors. We'll of course let you know when we know more about who's playing what, but remember that Dan used to sing lead with AtrophiA, and Anthony has played guitar in bands before. Debt To The Heirless are otherwise an unknown commodity as of yet, but given members' past band work, is a death/thrash metal sound far off? Intriguing lineup all the same, so stay tuned for updates as they roll in, and like them at their new Facebook page to get future updates!

Next up, here's a surprise, as inactive local/Toronto classical/punk trio RedD Monkey have posthumously released their third and final album (well, what was recorded for it) to their Bandcamp page! Entitled "Opus 2: Untitled", fans may remember that the Smeltzer successors had been recording a follow-up to their 2012 CD "All Baroque" (which was "Opus 1"), and previewed it at a Toronto concert in June 2013, but updates never followed before they went on hiatus early last year, their one-off Toronto gig this February notwithstanding. Featuring their final full lineup (singer/guitarist Steve Mozarowski, his brother Pete on the cello, and Joe Bumbacco on drums), the album was engineered by producer/Infinity Grinder guitarist Brad Griffith, who also handled their 2010 debut EP "Thought Control Tower". "Opus 2" also features "Mister" on guest keyboard (as far as I can tell, it's not Honest Job's Mister Tahti, we'll let you know if we get more confirmation on his identity.)

Officially, "Opus 2" was not finished, but there are still 9 completed and posted tracks on Bandcamp, more than on their debut, though it's not clear how much is missing from the intended final product. Unlike Lion Ride's posthumous posting of their incomplete final CD, this album is available for sale on a "name your price" model, so might this be the subject of our newest CD review on the SMS, and our first ever RedD Monkey album review? Find out soon, but it's great to finally have RedD Monkey's final album out in some form, and stream or buy it above!

Also, here's a preview for a special Monday night concert TOMORROW, as local grunge/punk solo project Telephone & Address will return to the stage to open for Victoria, British Columbia psych-pop band The Backhomes at The Gore Street Cafe! The latest in a series of folk-alternative concerts at the downtown cafe/laundromat, this will be Telephone & Address' first concert of the fall season, and his lo-fi punk originals should fit in well tomorrow with The Backhomes' spacey blend of alternative folk! It should be noted that Chris Shoust planned to have his newest Telephone & Address album ("Monster") pressed this month, and he did have a release party for "Rust Orchid" at The Gore Street Cafe in February, so might there be new material of some kind to take in tomorrow night? Be there to find out! This ALL AGES concert will begin at 7:00 PM tomorrow, and it's under the venue's usual "pay what you can" model. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and here's Telephone & Address live last year!

Finally, here's some new lineup updates regarding two of Destroilet singer/new local concert promoter Brenton Ellis' upcoming shows, so what should you know regarding them? In terms of this coming Thursday's Broomfiller-headlined concert, the local openers will apparently be pop punk quartet Stereo North & classic metal quintet Project 421, both making their New American Pub debuts! Both were confirmed on the Facebook event page on Friday. Solid fit to open the proceedings next week, so don't miss them on Thursday! The other show with a new lineup addition is the Dusty Tucker-headlined show at The Rednecks Saloon on October 7th, which Brent has newly taken on after original promoter Mitch Sirie ended his local concert promotion work again in July. The show had been advertised to feature the now-defunct Danger Cats since the spring, so who's taking their place to join Gnaeus as openers?

While Danger Cats alum Paula Panther suggested Stereo North on the Facebook event page (and sarcastically confirmed that they were getting back together to open beforehand), Brent has since confirmed that Montreal punk trio The Nailheads are the new third band, marking their first local concert appearance since a Roosevelt Hotel metal night four years ago! Surprising, but it keeps the diverse genre blend alive, and The Nailheads' old school sound will find a good audience! Note that a fourth band slot to be announced is still listed, but that dates back to Mitch's promoting tenure and might not still be planned. Things are shaping up well, so see the above links for more info, and kudos to Brent for taking this one on!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: Scott98633225 & RedD Monkey's Channels

While I take in the Elements/Late Shift concert, here's this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, as we continue our monthly looks at 1-3 randomly selected YouTube channels featuring at least a 50% count of local metal, hard rock, or punk-relevant videos! For a third straight month, we're looking at two channels due to one selected channel not having enough content for three distinct videos, but both feature some punk EPs worth checking out, so here's what you should know!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scott98633225's Channel (http://www.youtube.com/scott98633225)

Owner: Likely Scott Cudney, former drummer of the Sault Ontario punk band The Big Kahunas (credited only as BK)

Channel Timeline: Launched on August 15th, 2011; Only video uploaded on June 14th, 2013

Channel Summary: Scott's only upload on his channel is of defunct local punk band The Big Kahunas's EP "Only Thoughts", which was released in 1994. Details are extremely minimal online for The Big Kahunas, and their lineup is credited only by first names, but Destroilet's Christian Foisy told me that their members were Jenson Van Buskirk on vocals, The Bombed Squad's Pat Suriano on guitar, Steve Gagliardi on bass, and Scott Cudney on drums. If you can fill in any blanks, please let us know! "Only Thoughts" features 7 songs (none are titled on this video, though the last song is a cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass"), and they indicate that they had a skate punk sound with good intensity, a nice sense of humour, quality guitar solos, and decent production for the era! It's definitely worth checking out for fans of local 1990s punk, and hopefully more comes out on The Big Kahunas! Thanks again to Christian for the extra info!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RedD Monkey (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtCHTAma0urIe8BoTwfWLRA/)

Owner: A member of inactive local/Toronto/Kelowna hardcore punk/classical trio RedD Monkey, identity unclear, though the channel is credited to the band as a whole

Channel Timeline: Launched on October 8th, 2012; Videos uploaded on June 3rd & 4th, 2013

Channel Summary: The band's second official YouTube channel (following this channel full of 2011 live concert footage), the included videos comprise the vast majority of RedD Monkey's released original material, including their entire 2010 debut EP "Thought Control Tower" and all but one song on their 2012 album "All Baroque", though neither are uploaded in their listed order on CD or digital copies.

Why You Should Watch: You should give this channel a look as it's the most complete YouTube source for RedD Monkey's released discography, and it showcases their fact paced cello punk at good measure! Note however that the channel doesn't feature live videos, material from their unreleased "Opus 2" album, or "Dr. Fatty" from "All Baroque (though you can stream the latter on their Bandcamp page), while this channel hasn't been visibly used since these songs were uploaded.

Our Recommended Videos to Check Out:

RedD Monkey - The Clock's Dement: The last uploads on this channel were all 7 songs from RedD Monkey's June 2010 debut EP "Thought Control Tower", including "The Clock's Dement", "Friar's Ire", "Lethargic Rampage", "Fight Skateboard With Fire!", "No Teeth & A Lazy Eye", "The Attic", and the hidden bonus track "Fo' Dozen Cookies". Their only CD with former Gates of Winter drummer Kevin Overton, "Thought Control Tower" fleshed out their familiar blend of Pete Mozarowski's classical cello work with brother Steve's aggressive punk edge, and though this EP isn't as heavy as their second album, it contains some of RedD Monkey's most familiar originals!

Wild International: The rest of this RedD Monkey channel features 13 of the 14 songs from their second (and final?) CD "All Baroque" from June 2012, also their first with Joe Bumbacco on drums, and it includes the songs "1st World Problem", "Zombie Epoch", "Monkey's Paw (5th Wish of the Swamp Donkey)", "Turbosledt 2027", "Nudie", "Bog", "Poe", "Rats", "Lotus Song", "Screaming Couch", "ODIN!", "NCO Song", and (their most viewed video) a cover of One Day As A Lion's "Wild International". Notably featuring some edits from physical copies (including slightly edited titles, the last 3 songs being broken up from the original "That 13 Min. Song", and the absence of song #8, "Dr. Fatty"), this is still a quality album for RedD Monkey fans that takes them into faster territory without sacrificing their punk, rap, and classical styles!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! So, what's coming in this series next month? Through completely random selection, we'll be looking at three channels for the first time this year due to the first channel we chose only having one distinct local video type, and the second only only having one video total, so we're at our maximum for March. With that said, we'll be looking at the YouTube channels of MrFortierg (with Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide concert videos), SueInside1 (featuring the defunct local band's last music video), and kennybekendam (featuring T Treble Charger concert videos), so look for all of them on or around March 22nd, and for our Elements/Late Shift concert review later today! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide), New Videos, And More!!

Before likely Treble Charger concert fallout comes in, we have a new news post featuring some other recent items that should be of interest themselves, so what's on tap? New videos from two former bandmates in solo settings, and some assorted notes, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month!

Local/Toronto Celtic punk quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide will play their first local show of 2015 on Saturday, March 21st at the Searchmont Resort! Our source is the new Tidal Records concert schedule, which was posted on their Facebook page on Wednesday. The show is the only local date on the current schedule for Dustin & company, who will be touring Ontario next month, June, and in August for short runs, and the Searchmont gig will cap off their March touring. Further details are not out concerning their Searchmont gig next month, but the venue isn't all that odd for The Rising Tide, as they have played at (and been filmed at) the regional ski resort in the past, and their fun hybrid sound should fit in well next month! For reference sake, the "Soo CD release party" that is listed on the above Tidal Records schedule relates to Rising Tide members Sheldon & Marshall Jaaskelainen's roots band The Boot Hill Crooners' concert the previous day, not The Tide, but congrats to them on the pending CD release!

Details are to be confirmed for the March 21st D.J.R.T. concert, including on start times, possible age limits, and cover charges, but stay tuned for more as it rolls in, and check the above links for more updates!

Next up, here's some new video finds from Redundant/Elements bassist James White, which are actually his first performance uploads on his YouTube channel in over four years! Actually uploaded early last year, the five bass covers are of Sublime's "Don't Push" & "Date Rape", Metallica's "The Four Horsemen", and Iron Maiden's "Aces High" &, embedded below, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", so how does he sound here? At times, his bass can be heard to hear over the original tracks, but his skill is clear, and it's interesting to see him tackle songs that are a bit heavier than what his recent local bands have tended to play! Give them all a look above, and watch for a cameo by James' dog below!

Also, here's the newest studio track from James' former Haggith bandmate Mike Haggith's upcoming solo album "The Warinside", though it's also an old track, as it's a re-recording of his older song "Lay My Body Down To Rest". Originally from his 2009 album "I Hate My Life & I Want To Die" (which you can hear here), listeners of both songs will notice that the new version is longer, better produced, fuller, and has a new intro, but the basic structure is intact. We won't review the re-recorded song here, as I still expect to look at "The Warinside" in full upon release, but give the full song (which was uploaded to Mike's YouTube channel on Thursday) a listen below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last few days, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Though admission for the show is only $10, you do have the option to buy tickets for the Exes For Eyes concert at The Canadian Nightclub online, so if you want to get yours online instead, click here! Our source is promoter J.D. Pearce on the Facebook event page on Wednesday, and stay tuned for updates on the rest of the lineup!
  • Local/Toronto classical punk trio RedD Monkey apparently reunited for a set yesterday in Toronto at The Coalition Lounge during a short film screening, which marked their first show together since December 2013 (source here.) No word yet on if this was a one-off reunion or the start of something more, but the above link says that they were asked to play by their friends that were screening the film. Great news either way, and stay tuned for potential updates!
  • Local Chinese buffet restaurant Waterfront Legend (formerly Docks Riverfront Grill) is apparently trying live bands again for the first time since the name and theme change, as local blues rock cover band Mojo have brought their weekly jam night to the Foster Drive venue for at least the rest of the month, as per their Facebook group. Intriguing news, but will this lead to hard rock bands back there in the future? We'll keep you posted!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Power Slug), An Inactive Band, And Much More!!

I hope you guys are continuing to enjoy the holiday season! As predicted, I assumed we'd have SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS today, so that leads off this post, but we also have a note on a band who's hit a year's inactivity for our band listings, a recent video posting, and more assorted notes, so read on below foe what you need to know!

Sault Michigan hard rock trio Power Slug will reportedly return to the stage for headlining dates at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, we just heard about these gigs via frontman Chris Leask's personal Facebook page yesterday, and the shows have not been plugged on the band's own Facebook page. Fairly dormant over the last few months, these will be their first concerts that we've heard about since their Manistique road trip in September, and their first at The Rapids Lounge since at least the summer, and while we haven't heard much on why they took a break in recent months, it's great to see Chris, Bob, and Chris back in the saddle for one more weekend before the new year! You can take in their hard rock covers TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT at 9:00 PM, you must be 21 to attend either night, and there's no announced cover charge. Go chug your mug with Power Slug if you can this weekend, and here are the guys at The Bird!

Next up, we regrettably have a band to move to our inactive band links in the next few days, that being local/Toronto hardcore punk/classical trio RedD Monkey. While the guys have not officially announced a breakup, they haven't issued an online update since Boxing Day last year when they played at the former Roosevelt Hotel, with frontman Steve Mozarowski later confirming an indefinite hiatus (or worse) in interviews and Facebook postings. Active since their formation in Kelowna in 2009, RedD Monkey had grown to become one of the more prominent local punk bands of the early 2010s, which saw them go on tour a number of times, record three albums (though only two were released), and play a number of major local concerts like the first three Sewer Swampstravaganzas, Rotaryfest's 2010 Second Stage, and 2009's Algoma University Battle of the Bands. In the past year, Steve had stayed busy "songwriting" with The Apocalypse Afterparty, while his brother Pete has dabbled in solo cello work, and drummer Joe Bumbacco can currently be seen in the Toronto sludge band Larval Host.

RedD Monkey accomplished a great deal in their 5 year run, and while the circumstances behind their year-long inactivity were never publicized, their energetic and fast paced concerts have been missed in the past 12 months. I hope we see their third album "Opus 2" come out at some point at the very least, but for now, best of luck to Steve, Pete, Joe, and their other former drummers in the future, and fingers crossed we see them again!

Also, here's a new video from local grunge/hardcore duo Bad Back, who you can next see live opening for the Detroit reunion at The Algonquin Pub on Tuesday! Hyped as their "Sault Ste. Marie comeback show" (as they haven't played a public gig within city limits since opening for The Archaics in July), this video from drummer Nathan Sauve's YouTube channel on Monday will give you a preview at their setlist on Tuesday, as it compiles many strung together clips of originals & covers alike from a recent jam session. The audio quality is solid, but the camera angle leaves something to be desired due to it's high angle, fish-eye lens filter, and complete lack of Nathan in visible frame. It gets the job done though, so give Bad Back's newest video a look below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band or store name:

  • In their first Facebook page post in almost 3 months, local all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats revealed that drummer Calico Katie will be vacationing in England over the Christmas holiday, but they'll be back together in January to return to the stage. The girls haven't played live since September for unclear reasons, but hopefully they're back in action in short order, as they've been missed, and hopefully Katie has a great trip!
  • Rudyard, Michigan hard rock cover quintet Exiled revealed on their Facebook page on Sunday that they're currently taking a break while drummer Justin Lawless and his wife welcome their new baby. Completely understandable, so look for them upon their return in the new year, and congratulations in advance to Justin & Anna on the coming arrival!
  • Have you seen Facebook postings in the past week suggesting that Music Depot closed? A number of personal statuses suggested that the Gore Street music instrument store had it's last day on Saturday, but apparently, Music Depot just had an owner change and will be re-opening at some point soon, possibly next week. Hopefully that's all, as I know how much many local musicians like Music Depot! Our source is longtime staffer and Lucky 13 bassist Jeff Gray in a personal conversation.

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates over the weekend! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? December 2014 Update

It's now time for our delayed last "Where Are The New Albums?" post of the year, and I apologize for the wait, as we're badly behind on a lot around here after the concert review crush from the last few days. As usual, this monthly feature looks at the current release statuses of announced and partially recorded metal, punk, and hard rock albums from Sault Ontario-area bands, in order to keep tabs on how far along they are and when you might see them! This month, we've removed The Bear Hunters' new CDs and Sykotyk Rampage's "Bring The Heavy" (which we'll have more on in the coming days) due to their releases in the past month, but we also removed one due to a band's likely inactive status, and added three new albums in the works! As usual, updated entries have their titles in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Apocalypse Afterparty's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "The Crowd" (The Fury cover), "Glory & Gore" (Lorde cover), "Rebel Scum" (The Fury cover)

Background: Before ever playing a public concert , new local rap/metal duo The Apocalypse Afterparty (featuring 2/3rds of Smeltzer as "songwriters") announced on their Facebook page on August 21st that they had begun working on their 3 song debut EP with producer Jamie Vincent (AlgomA), though they also alluded to recording the remaining songs with different producers. The song that they recorded with Jamie is "The Crowd", which you can hear in full at this link, though other details have yet to follow.

Current Release Status: No idea, especially given "songwriter" Steve Mozarowski's return to the Toronto area this fall and the band's announced plans to expand their lineup with female members, but things seemed to be progressing well despite the band's short existence, and hopefully more comes out soon on this EP!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beaumont Avenue - King of the World

Rumoured Songs: "Into the Fray", "Red Rover", "King of the World", "Way Out Of Hell", "Take Me Away", "Beaten Down", "Two More Jag", "Jesus Concubines"

Background: Already off to a quick launch with numerous concerts since their fall 2012 debut, local hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings (who changed their name to Beaumont Avenue this summer) surprisingly announced that they were officially working on their first EP on their Facebook page last February. Three weeks later, the band revealed in another Facebook posting that they were busy working on their own material, and they had plans to complete an EP by the end of the spring featuring 5-7 songs, which was recorded over the past month at The Smoke & Oak Room Studio with producer Dave Pihlaja. As of last spring, the tracks were in the final stages of mixing, and though info on the sessions and release was sporadic for much of last year, the band unveiled studio versions of their originals "Into the Fray" & "Jesus Concubines" in January on Facebook, presumably as a preview for the full release., though nothing has followed since, and the band is currently taking a break due to drummer Ben Boudreau's out of town college commitments.

Current Release Status:
As of their Facebook page in September, Beaumont Avenue are planning to record 2 EPs of 4 original songs each (grouped by how they feel) before writing a debut album from scratch when Ben returns home, which may or may not mean that they're scrapping their Smoke & Oak Room session tracks for their pending debut CD. Given that they're on break while Ben's away, we may not get fuller details for a while, but be on guard just in case!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gates of Winter - Perihelion

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "Wormhole Mechanics", "Prometheus"

Background: Despite a hiatus from live concerts lasting over 5 years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". The first glimpse of the new album was unveiled in February 2010, when frontman/producer Lee Maines uploaded a snippet of their new song "The Stars Call My True Name" onto his YouTube channel, and he followed that up with more demo & rehearsal clips sporadically over the last couple of years, though all were later taken down. The band launched a new Facebook page in August 2010 to keep fans updated on the sessions, including the unveiling of a new song title, "Time Warp", and while Sault native Jon Morrison was announced as the album's drummer that fall, the album will feature programmed drums. In November 2011, bassist Steve Furgiuele confirmed in a YouTube video that the album, now titled "Perihelion", was planned for release in December 2012, with some older re-recordings likely for the summer, but Lee confirmed last month that the album would be delayed further, be retracted to EP length, and possibly be renamed. Other new songs, tentatively called "Wormhole Mechanics" & "Prometheus", was previewed in this video & this video that were uploaded last year & this April respectively. Whether ex-keyboardist Brian Holmes will be included on the EP is currently unknown.

Current Release Status: Personal commitments and the like have slowed things down incredibly, but in the band's most recent preview video (featuring audio samples), Gates of Winter hinted that work was winding down on "Perihelion", including noting that "the silence ends soon", with this year now targeted for a release. Good art takes time, and knowing Gates of Winter's talent and attention to detail, they won't wanna release this until everything's perfect. I'll admit that I know a bit more on "Perihelion" than what I've posted here, but I'll wait until more public word comes out before elaborating, so keep an eye out for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haggith - "XIV", "Apocalypse II", and "Time Machine: Live"

Rumoured Songs (X): "Public Enemy", "These Four Walls", "Wasted", "Red", "By The Hand", "Runnin' From Love", "Metal Cage", "Road Rash", "Punch", "Anthem"

Rumoured Songs (A): "Apocalypse", "Spreading The Disease", "Hands of Death", "Tribute to Mike Haggith"

Rumoured Songs (T): Unknown

Background: After being broken up throughout early 2014, local grunge/alternative rock quartet Haggith came back at the fourth annual Sewer Swampstravaganza at The Oddfellows Hall on May 10th, where the band announced that they would be recording a new studio album, but their Facebook page later indicated that Haggith are now releasing two new CDs! These include a new original album named "XIV" (featuring unreleased songs, new tracks, and previous Punch originals) and a resumption of their "Apocalypse II" concept sequel CD, which has been sampled via song postings on their YouTube channel. Recording sessions are ongoing at Paperclip Productions, though it's yet unclear who the featured bassist(s) will be on the albums, given their recent unstability in that position. On November 24th, the band also revealed plans for a live album named "Time Machine: Live", though little else is known on it or if it will get a paid release.

Current Release Status: As of November 24th, Haggith were aiming for releases of "Apocalypse II", "Time Machine: Live", and "XIV" in January, February, and March respectively, though those can change. "XIV" in particular has been delayed due to the band's split with bassist James White and his White Wreckords studio, which once had a hand in the recording sessions. Stay tuned for updates on all three as we hear them!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Haggith's third compilation album & "The Warinside"

Rumoured Songs (C): "1980", "Wicked Midnight Ride", "To Whom This May Concern", "Fourth Floor Centre/She Wanted To Be A Veterinarian", "Sun Perfume", "Grace", "Limb Coast","Miss 76", "Room 822", "Trinity", "Solitude", "Resurfaced", "The Day The Lights Went Out", "Lost Time"

Rumoured Songs (W): "We Met As Surrogates", "The Snake", "Candy Is A Hooker's Name", "Someday", "Lay My Body To Rest", "Of Cars & Criminals", "September", "Out Of My League", "A Drive Through The Peninsula", "30"

Background: In April, Haggith drummer Mike Haggith announced his third best-of compilation album (possibly "The Best of Mike Haggith: Volume 3"?), which would compile 14 top songs from his previous 4 studio releases ("Suspended Animation", "The Present Din", and both "Neighbourhood Watch" CDs), Mike didn't close the door on re-recorded some vocal tracks, possibly in conjunction with a planned re-release of the first "Neighbourhood Watch" album. You can view the compilation's artwork at this link, though further updates aren't out yet. However, Mike has updated his Facebook page this fall to detail his upcoming 49th studio album "The Warinside", which also has a tentative tracklist and will reflect his recent personal life, with the instrumental "September" now available to stream from it as well.

Current Release Status: For the compilation, Mike was hoping for it's digital release in the weeks following the reveal of the disc, but that's came and went, so it's unclear where this will fall. In any event, physical pressings are possible, pending customer demand. As for "The Warinside", we're a ways off from a release yet, but instrumental tracking is complete, and given how fast and honest he tends to be, any updates should be good as to it's progress. Stay tuned as more comes in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RedD Monkey - Opus 2

Rumoured Songs:
"Broken Parts", "Losing Friends", "The Jock Song"

Background: The planned third CD from this popular local hardcore punk/classical trio, RedD Monkey have hyped "Opus 2" (a follow-up to 2012's "All Baroque")  in online posts through last spring, along with previewing the disc at a Toronto concert last June, though further updates on it's release status have yet to be made, nor has a release schedule been announced. I'd assume that "Opus 2" was recorded in a similar method to "All Baroque", but that's just speculation given that both CDs were labelled as opuses in a series. Keep an eye in case something's announced!

Current Release Status: I'm not really sure, especially following the band's confirmation that they're currently on a hiatus, and given that they've issued no public updates since their last show on Boxing Day last year, that can't be a good sign for fans. That said, the sessions appear to be complete, and a preview of it was held last year, so a release can't be terribly far off for when/if they return to activity. In case they do come back, keep an eye out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Redundant's debut CD

Rumoured Songs: "Miles Apart", "That December", "What You'll Do"

Background: Over two and a half years after their last documented studio sessions in the spring of 2012, local punk trio Redundant revealed on their Facebook page on November 16th that they're finally working on finishing their debut CD, and will look to hold a CD release party for it upon it's completion. Details are otherwise minimal, including on if the guys will just package their older studio work for the release, or include new recordings, perhaps at bassist James White's new studio White Wreckords. We'll keep you posted when we hear more!

Current Release Status: Though we don't know much on the new/revived album plans, Redundant do sound serious about completing their CD, and an early 2015 timeframe is likely being targeted. We'll be sure to let you know when updates roll in though!

The Revolution's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Murder For Sport", "We Are The Gladiators", "Monsters", "Prisoner of Hate", "Mercury", "Get High With Me"

Background: New local doom/punk trio The Revolution (originally the second version of Brutaly Fatal) surprisingly announced on their Facebook page this summer that they were heading into the studio to begin recording their debut EP on July 26th. The sessions were being done at their new label PaperClip Productions, who signed the band in May. Details on the title, artwork, song list, and cover art are to be revealed, but the band revealed on November 24th that songwriting was still ongoing, and they wouldn't be back in the studio until they found a new bassist to replace the departed Rainey Vincent.

Current Release Status: Though The Revolution is hoping to have the EP out "in the new year", we don't have past albums from Austin & Brandan to compare in terms of making a specific guess (aside from Austin's early Brutaly Fatal demos.) PaperClip Productions tend to be fairly quick and honest with release dates, so we'll have to see how things flesh out in the coming months!

The Sorrow Fields - Let Go

Rumoured Songs: "Godlessness"

Background: Previously known as Animas, April Eyes, and By The Gods, The Sorrow Fields is the long gestating black/death metal solo metal project from Bear Hunters/Suicide Kings guitarist Mitch Sirie. He resurrected the project under it's new name in 2012, complete with an atmospheric & dark sound, and he has sporadically updated fans as to his newest planned debut album via their YouTube channel and deleted Facebook page. As of June 2013, he'd titled the album "Godlessness" (though it was changed to "Let Go" this spring), and a preview of the title track and another unnamed song were uploaded there to check out before being privatized for unannounced reasons. Mitch is still working on the album though, and has aims to finish it after 6 years of off & on work, as per a personal Facebook posting earlier this year.

Current Release Status: Mitch's most recent release timeframe for The Sorrow Fields' album was this coming winter, though he added on Facebook that he didn't plan to speak about it further until completion, so our next word or previews on it might not be for a while. Knowing how delayed his past solo album "Hollow Hope" was prior to it's cancellation, this could be a long road, especially as he's a workhorse with his two bands. It should also be noted that Mitch hinted on personal Facebook posts this fall that a studio version of his fan favourite "Squirrel Buddy" is in the works, but whether it's a single or a renamed full album isn't clear. In case new "Let Go" or Sorrow Fields news rolls in, we'll have it here!

Telephone & Address - Rust Orchid

Rumoured Songs: Unknown

Background: Less than a month after the release of their newest solo CD "Need Not Apply", Telephone & Address mainman Chris Shoust revealed on their Facebook page on October 25th that the solo grunge/punk project has already laid down studio tracks for another CD named "Rust Orchid", but he's waiting for funds to press physical copies before release. He says that the album will be "much different than the last", referencing "Need Not Apply" and it's electric bass/vocals sound, but whether he's returning to an unplugged guitar motif or going completely different isn't clear. When released, it's likely to also turn up on Telephone & Address' Bandcamp page and on Interpunk, which Chris is also using to distribute physical copies.

Current Release Status: It's all up to when Chris can fund the physical copies, but I'd be surprised if we see it before New Year's Day, given the time involved with that and SOCAN registration, which he tends to do for his CDs. Given the lo-fi nature though, things could roll along very quickly, so stay tuned for updates!

With all of that said, one album was removed due to it's unlikely release status, so here's what you should know on it:

Sailor's Tongue's debut album

Rumoured Songs:
"Float, "Out of the Woodwork", "Wired For No Sound", "Shadow", "Doctor John", "BootScattered", "Beauty's Limousine", "Don't Shoot The Messenger", "Horses & Trains", "Navy"

Background: Despite only playing two gigs (both at the Rotaryfest Second Stage) since returning from their three year breakup in 2012, local hard rock notables Sailor's Tongue hit the studio to record tracks for their debut full length album, which would have featured their recent quintet lineup. Drummer Dean McKey uploaded four tracks (some labelled as demos) to his Soundcloud page last year that are likely towards the album, while there are existing songs on their Reverbnation page from earlier sessions that would likely have be featured in some form. A preview demo CD named "Pierced" was sold at their Rotaryfest Second Stage set in July 2013 that featured 7 tracks, though Dean later told me on Facebook that the album was just a sampler for attendees and was not the intended final product.

Reason For Removal: This album's been removed because of Sailor's Tongue's inactive public status, as the band hasn't played live or issued a public update since said Rotaryfest set last July, which could partly be due to members Kyle & Dean McKey's out of town residence, or perhaps due to the Second Stage's 2014 hiatus. In any event, their planned CD is presumably in limbo until they come back, though if Sailor's Tongue return (perhaps along with the Second Stage in 2015), I can't see the full album being that far behind! Hopefully we hear more from the guys!
