Today's post is largely Sault Michigan-centric, with album updates from a regional artist to touch on, and some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for two bands in early 2016, but we also have some general updates to one of our feature series to cap things off. Now, here's what you should know!
Kewadin Casino's entertainment page has finally been updated to reflect 2016 concerts, with shows listed for The Rapids Lounge at the Soo Kewadin and The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin through late June, and there are new hard rock shows to note there! The Highway 63 shows are already known to us, but we can now confirm five new concert weekends from bands in our range, including hard rock quartet 415E, who will return to The Northern Pines Lounge in St. Ignace on February 26th & 27th, and then on April 29th & 30th! Last seen on stage during their New Year's Eve show in St. Ignace, 415E are the only St. Ignace-scheduled band so far that isn't playing at the Sault Kewadin, but if you can head down to The Northern Pines Lounge over these weekends, be ready for some Van Halen-inspired hard rock hits! There's no announced cover charge for these 21+ shows, which start at around 9:00 PM. For more details, visit the above links, and stay tuned for more from the Hubbard/Menard crew as we hear it!
The other new hard rock confirmations come from Kinross classic/hard rock trio Banned, who had announced Kewadin dates through March already via their Facebook page, but the casino confirmed a handful of shows beyond! The Traynors and Wayne will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at in St. Ignace for gigs on April 14th & 15th and then on May 13th & 14th, while they'll return to The Rapids Lounge in the Soo for the first time in three months on June 17th & 18th, so keep those dates in mind as well! Banned always stay busy, and hopefully these shows go as well as their next ones, as fans should know their talent level! Remember, we'll next see Banned within an hour of Sault Ste. Marie when they rock The Runway Bar in Hessel on February 12th, with gigs at Western U.P. Kewadin branches coming beforehand. Like with the new 415E gigs, these are 9:00 PM affairs with no announced cover charges and 21+ age limits. For more details, visit the above links, and stay tuned for more from Banned!
And just for reference, note that other new Kewadin dates belong to classic rockers Touch of Class & The Brooks Band, country artists Hawk Junction & Paul Perry, and Traverse City dance rock quartet Risque, who haven't been recent local regulars that I've seen. Note that there's nothing new from there from the recently dormant Power Slug, nor from Jeff Hudson's Traverse City-area metal bands like Peril & Scarkazm, but if/when we hear more on their next E.U.P. dates, we'll let you know!
Next up, Dafter, Michigan solo hard rock musician Ken Sutton (a.k.a. SweetKenny) has released another new album, so what should you know on it? Entitled "Only Us Left Standing", it was released to his Bandcamp page on January 11th (apologies for the delay), and it's his first album of 2016 & 16th
total in his main solo series. Continuing his recent focus since the
summer, this SweetKenny album is intended to be a conceptual &
instrumental score that could be used in a video game, and similarly to
last month's "The Walkers: Rise of the Dead",
it's themed after a zombie invasion. On listening, I can confirm that
it's darker and more ominous than "The Walkers", which is largely
acoustic-based, but both show Ken's range! "Only Us Left Standing" is on
sale for $7 via the above links, so definitely consider picking it up,
especially if you like video game scores!
Now, as
these are part of his main album canon, they are eligible for reviews on
the site, and I'd already pencilled in a SweetKenny review for this month, so is one of these next? No, as I usually pick the heaviest album
if I have multiple new releases to pick from in a band's discography,
and from his most recent four (plus August's "Charlie Hidelburg: Ancient Hunter"), the heaviest is October's "The Hitman Files",
which is themed like it could be in a hitman action game or movie. No
word on when SweetKenny will release a traditional new solo album (last
seen with June's "Fleabag Hotel"), but look for our review of "The
Hitman Files" by Sunday!
Finally for today, here's some more updates to our past Battle of the Bands Rewind Profiles! In our profile of 2010's Sault College/Scotties Tournament of Heart Battle of the Bands, we restored a photo of third place finishers Sykotyk Rampage, and updated info on their recent activity, but the rest was still good. In our profile of that spring's Downtown Showdown battle, we restored two photos, added notes on runners-up The Fury's brief 2014 reunion and frontman Paul Stanghetta's never-launched successor band Keep It Lit, and clarified info on judge Len Ward. For it's section on performers' later bands, we replaced The Glass Thieves, Keep It Lit, and March Into Regression with The Apocalypse Afterparty, Infinity Grinder, and London's Five Oceans (featuring Tenagens alum Patrick Dal Cin) to keep that more current. Finally, we added references to how performers did in 2015 battles, namely SBD bassist Brad Griffith at the Speak Easy battle with Infinity Grinder, and Fury frontman Paul Stanghetta's fourth place run at the VM Radio Battle with The Apocalypse Afterparty. Hopefully that gets these sufficiently updated, and stay tuned for updates of battles from 2012 and on next, much more news and notes in short order, plus our review of SweetKenny's "The Hitman Files"! Thanks everyone!
While I take in the Elements/Late Shift concert, here's this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, as we continue our monthly looks at 1-3 randomly selected YouTube channels featuring at least a 50% count of local metal, hard rock, or punk-relevant videos! For a third straight month, we're looking at two channels due to one selected channel not having enough content for three distinct videos, but both feature some punk EPs worth checking out, so here's what you should know!
Owner: Likely Scott Cudney, former drummer of the Sault Ontario punk band The Big Kahunas (credited only as BK)
Channel Timeline: Launched on August 15th, 2011; Only video uploaded on June 14th, 2013
Channel Summary: Scott's only upload on his channel is of defunct local punk band The Big Kahunas's EP "Only Thoughts", which was released in 1994. Details are extremely minimal online for The Big Kahunas, and their lineup is credited only by first names, but Destroilet's Christian Foisy told me that their members were Jenson Van Buskirk on vocals, The Bombed Squad's Pat Suriano on guitar, Steve Gagliardi on bass, and Scott Cudney on drums. If you can fill in any blanks, please let us know! "Only Thoughts" features 7 songs (none are titled on this video, though the last song is a cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass"), and they indicate that they had a skate punk sound with good intensity, a nice sense of humour, quality guitar solos, and decent production for the era! It's definitely worth checking out for fans of local 1990s punk, and hopefully more comes out on The Big Kahunas! Thanks again to Christian for the extra info!
Owner: A member of inactive local/Toronto/Kelowna hardcore punk/classical trio RedD Monkey, identity unclear, though the channel is credited to the band as a whole
Channel Timeline: Launched on October 8th, 2012; Videos uploaded on June 3rd & 4th, 2013
Channel Summary: The band's second official YouTube channel (following this channel full of 2011 live concert footage), the included videos comprise the vast majority of RedD Monkey's released original material, including their entire 2010 debut EP "Thought Control Tower" and all but one song on their 2012 album "All Baroque", though neither are uploaded in their listed order on CD or digital copies.
Why You Should Watch: You should give this channel a look as it's the most complete YouTube source for RedD Monkey's released discography, and it showcases their fact paced cello punk at good measure! Note however that the channel doesn't feature live videos, material from their unreleased "Opus 2" album, or "Dr. Fatty" from "All Baroque (though you can stream the latter on their Bandcamp page), while this channel hasn't been visibly used since these songs were uploaded.
Our Recommended Videos to Check Out:
RedD Monkey - The Clock's Dement: The last uploads on this channel were all 7 songs from RedD Monkey's June 2010 debut EP "Thought Control Tower", including "The Clock's Dement", "Friar's Ire", "Lethargic Rampage", "Fight Skateboard With Fire!", "No Teeth & A Lazy Eye", "The Attic", and the hidden bonus track "Fo' Dozen Cookies". Their only CD with former Gates of Winter drummer Kevin Overton, "Thought Control Tower" fleshed out their familiar blend of Pete Mozarowski's classical cello work with brother Steve's aggressive punk edge, and though this EP isn't as heavy as their second album, it contains some of RedD Monkey's most familiar originals!
Wild International: The rest of this RedD Monkey channel features 13 of the 14 songs from their second (and final?) CD "All Baroque" from June 2012, also their first with Joe Bumbacco on drums, and it includes the songs "1st World Problem", "Zombie Epoch", "Monkey's Paw (5th Wish of the Swamp Donkey)", "Turbosledt 2027", "Nudie", "Bog", "Poe", "Rats", "Lotus Song", "Screaming Couch", "ODIN!", "NCO Song", and (their most viewed video) a cover of One Day As A Lion's "Wild International". Notably featuring some edits from physical copies (including slightly edited titles, the last 3 songs being broken up from the original "That 13 Min. Song", and the absence of song #8, "Dr. Fatty"), this is still a quality album for RedD Monkey fans that takes them into faster territory without sacrificing their punk, rap, and classical styles!

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! So, what's coming in this series next month? Through completely random selection, we'll be looking at three channels for the first time this year due to the first channel we chose only having one distinct local video type, and the second only only having one video total, so we're at our maximum for March. With that said, we'll be looking at the YouTube channels of MrFortierg (with Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide concert videos), SueInside1 (featuring the defunct local band's last music video), and kennybekendam (featuring T Treble Charger concert videos), so look for all of them on or around March 22nd, and for our Elements/Late Shift concert review later today! Thanks everyone!
It's the 10th of the month, so it's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! As usual, this monthly feature series looks at 1-2 local metal/hard rock bands that have either broken up or fallen inactive, in order to profile their history, material, and major events for current readers, and as the first band we picked this month had no available media, I picked another band to fill out this double post! Today, we have a band each from both sides of the border, and though neither lasted a long time, they have their own distinct info to share, so read on below for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! (Updated on August 28th, 2013)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steven Dahlke, vocals/guitar
Nick Moreau (Plastic), guitar/bass/drums
Info/Analysis:Originally named Cash Only, Cherubic Red were a short lived industrial hard rock project that was active in the Sault Michigan area from roughly August 2009 until February 2010. Describing their sound as "rhythmic destruction", along with crediting numerous influences, old blog postings on their MySpace page from late 2009 indicated plans to release a single named "An Deinem Herzen" (German for "In Your Heart"), though the band went inactive before any media could be posted. They also had a close relationship with defunct local grunge band Half Stupid (who Steven Dahlke once promoted shows featuring), but little else is known on Cherubic Red that I can find. The influences and postings seem promising for a more unique local hard rock project, and hopefully we'll hear some of what Steven & Nick were working on at some point down the road!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike DiPasquale (Time of Ruin), guitar Frank LaTassa (Quite Frankly), guitar Mark Parent (Time of Ruin), drums
Info/Analysis:Primarily active from 2006-2007, Faithless Sin were visible and busy during their initial run, including releasing their song "Chaos Reigns", but major activity died down after the departure of guitarist Mike DiPasquale in September 2006, and updates ended the following spring. Plans to relaunch the band with a new name & sound led to the creation of a separate new band named Time of Ruin (featuring Jason, Mike, and Mark from Faithless Sin), who were active from 2007-2008. Most of Faithless Sin's original lineup relaunched the band after a three year hiatus in August 2010, but their reunion was short lived, and they disbanded for good that fall. Personally, I'd say that Time of Ruin should be looked back on & remembered first given that they did more (and actually played concerts), but at least Faithless Sin had posted media! "Chaos Reigns" is a solid extreme metal track with nice guitar work and an intense feeling, but the recording quality isn't very good. Still, if you liked Time of Ruin or the other local bands that Jason fronted, check out Faithless Sin's only posted original song below!

I hope you guys liked this month's defunct profiles! Next month, we'll look at another Sault Michigan band, but which one? By random selection, I've chosen Insipid Brutality, the defunct local black/death metal band who just released a posthumous album last year, so watch out for what should be an interesting single-band profile on or around June 10th! That's all for today, but stay tuned for at least one new news post this weekend! Thanks everyone!
