Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Paraside

As expected, the 10th of the month is bringing us another monthly feature post at the SMS, and it's our latest Defunct Local Band Profile! As always, this series features a profile on a local metal or hard rock band that have either disbanded or have been visibly inactive for a full year, and like the rest of the entries in this series, this month's band was randomly chosen from our local metal/hard rock band links. This month's band (our 25th profiled since this series started) didn't last a long time, but they were frequently seen at their height, so read on below for what you need to know this month! (Updated on May 7th, 2013)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Genre: Alternative Metal/Hardcore

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members:

Jake Vachon, vocals
Brock Kinnunen, lead guitar
Greg Sacco, rhythm guitar
Michael Hagerman (Changing Waves), bass
Alex Hagerman (Changing Waves), drums

Audio/Video: Online media from Paraside's brief local run is in short supply, but a few pages have samples of how they sounded! Their MySpace page features low quality live recordings of their original songs "Butterfly" and "M.I.A." (along with their "Alarm" intro track), and I've since uploaded each one to our YouTube channel. Also, their Facebook group features three short (and also low quality) videos from early 2008 jam sessions. That's all from Paraside that I know of, but you can see their three jam videos as one combined YouTube upload (with brightened video quality) below!

Info/Analysis: Paraside were a young local hardcore band that were frequently seen at local concerts between November 2007 & April 2008, mostly at all ages hardcore/punk shows at The Oddfellows Hall. Paraside opened for notable out of town bands like The Rebel Spell, The Flatliners, and Three For Fallacy during their run, along with sharing the stage with local hardcore quintet As It Stands on at least three occasions. Details on Paraside beyond their concert dates are minimal, though according to their Facebook group, singer Jake Vachon likely left the band in the spring of 2008. Paraside's likely last show was on April 20th, 2008 as openers for Dead & Divine, and they last used their MySpace page on May 27th, presumably going inactive that summer. Band members Michael & Alex Hagerman were highly visible locally in the hardcore quartet Changing Waves through mid-2012, while guitarist Greg Sacco has worked on a solo acoustic project in later years. It's hard for me to critique Paraside due to the low audio quality of their posted material, but I can tell that they had good energy, solid guitar work, and a well varied sound, and I do detect band chemistry. It'd be nice to get clearer audio or video of Paraside, but check them out and see if you like what you hear!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There, I hope you guys liked this month's profile! So, what's in store for this series next month? Well, our next 1-1-1-1-1 cycle between the twin Saults begins next month, but because the first band I chose doesn't have enough substantial information to support a whole post, we're doing two bands from each of the twin Saults next! Yes, both bands were chosen randomly. So next month, we're looking at the short lived 2009 hardcore band Lorax (formerly Loyalty Is Dead), and the late 2008 Sault Michigan metal project Hands of Betrayal (that I think featured Slackjawed Rats alumni), so watch out for these on the site on or around April 10th! That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news this weekend! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison) & New Sault Michigan-Related Videos!!

Well, I figured our next post on here would be our next Defunct Local Band Profile, but I had to rush a news post onto the site due to a short notice LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TODAY! That and a few more new concerts from the same act lie below, but also check out this post for some new videos from across the river in Sault Michigan, including a new concert video and the latest videos from two talented area guitarists, so here's what you need to know!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has announced FOUR more acoustic solo concerts for this spring, including a return to Bossy's Pub N' Grub TODAY!! I apologize for the short notice, Tym only just announced these concerts (including today's) yesterday. Among the new shows he announced, Tym will be back at the Pim Street bar/restaurant today & next Saturday at 2:00 PM, pushing his Bossy's weekly concert arrangement to a 10th & 11th week, which is good to see! The other new shows include a return to The Zone Roadhouse in Goulais River for the first time in four months next Saturday, which will also serve as both his second show of the day and his St. Patrick's Day show! That should be fun, and I imagine green beer will be flowing readily! The final new show will be a Friday night return to The Service Grill on Korah Road on April 6th for the first time in almost two months, and it's good to see him back at one of his recent favourite concert spots! The non-Bossy's gigs should have 9:00 PM-ish start times and no cover charges, and though the Zone show is likely 19+, The Service Grill's show might not be due to the restaurant setting. Click the above links for each new show's respective Facebook event page!

It's cool to see Tym announce a bunch of shows at once, with advance time to spread the word for most of them, so hopefully some of you guys can plan your schedules to check Tym out this spring! First of all though, he'll be back at Bossy's THIS AFTERNOON, so if you want some acoustic hard rocking good times, you know where he'll be today! For a preview of today's show, check out this video of Tym covering Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" at Bossy's in January!

Next up, here's a brand new concert video from a recent major Kewadin Casino metal show! We've seen videos of hair metal legends Stryper & Slaughter from their show at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino from February 24th already via YouTube user soundsunlimiteddj's YouTube channel, but only last week did he post a video of opening band Lynch Mob to go along with his other concert clips! The video is of ex-Dokken guitarist George Lynch's band playing the title track of their 1990 debut album "Wicked Sensation", and like with soundsunlimiteddj's other videos from this show, the quality is awesome! Though heads can get in the way, the band sounds good with a solid groove, and maybe I'll have to give Lynch Mob more of a listen now after seeing this video! Check out the new Lynch Mob video from this concert below, and if any more Stryper, Slaughter, or Lynch Mob videos turn up online, I'll be sure to have them here!

Also in new videos, Trail's End guitarist Chris Hubbard has posted some new videos onto his YouTube channel, and though two of them are from Van Halen's recent concert in Detroit, the rest deal with Chris' own solo work and instruments! The three most recent, which were uploaded last week, are videos of some of Chris' custom Van Halen-styled instruments, including two EVH guitars and a work-in-progress Alex Van Halen drum kit replica, so click here to see his work if you're interested in seeing some well done guitar/drum customization! The other new videos are of Chris playing the guitar, one of which is Chris covering snippets various Van Halen songs for about 10 minutes, and all sound really good, but the view on the video is of his EVH guitar rig and occasionally his foot. That's the point of the video though, so I'm not too disappointed, and you hear some great guitar work regardless! The video we're embedding here though is of Chris covering the new Van Halen song "Blood & Fire" in full, and though the angle on Chris is further than on his other posted Van Halen covers, this is a solid version of this sort of-new Van Halen track! Check it out below, and watch more of Chris' solo videos at the above links!

And finally for now, Swayze Train guitarist Scott Savoie has posted a new solo performance video to his YouTube channel! Uploaded on Thursday and entitled "Building A Reflection", he says he wrote this using the loop function of one of his amp models, and it's a cool sounding piece that could start a quality progressive metal track if he built on it more! Definitely check it out below, and keep posted to the SMS for more from Scott and Swayze Train!

That's all for the moment, but stay tuned for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile on Paraside later today! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Valentine's Day Massacre), New Canadian Concert Videos, And More!!

It's time for another news post, and this one's got a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next week, new videos from a couple of Canadian Nightclub concerts last week, and news on a local hard rock band's latest lineup change, so read on below for this latest news, and also check out this week's Battle of the Bands Rewind Profile from our current mini-series in the post below this one!

Three local metal bands will grace the stage next Friday for a concert at The Speak Easy! Local deathcore quartet The Valentine's Day Massacre (who appear to be putting this show on), hardcore standouts As It Stands (in their second concert in a two night span), and death metal quintet The Bear Hunters will join forces for the first time together in a somewhat rare metal concert at Algoma University's bar/concert spot! I don't think either The VDM or The Bear Hunters have ever played at The Speak Easy before, while I don't think As It Stands have since their 2010 reunion, so this should be a fun (but different) spot for this concert! It goes down this coming Friday at 9:00 PM, there's no cover charge, and at least for now, it's 19+, but that could change. The Speak Easy is generally a better bar for all ages concert ratios, but if the age limit is removed, I'll let you guys know on here. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Sounds like fun to me, and there's definitely a solid and rising lineup of local metal talent on this show, so definitely circle it on your calendars for next week! Stay tuned for updates as they roll in!

Next up, a new concert video from this past Sunday's Dead In The Van fundraiser concert at The Canadian Nightclub has been posted online, and it's of the first 12 minutes of local classic metal quartet Late & Loud's set from that night! The video features Late & Loud's covers of Judas Priest's "The Hellion" and "The Green Manalishi (And The Two-Pronged Crown)", followed by their originals "Whisper Of The Damned" and "Fast As A Bitch", as filmed by an attendee of the concert. Guitarist Jonathan Tiberi handles lead vocals mostly in the video, though guitarist Brendan Christie (who uploaded this video onto his YouTube channel yesterday) sings on "Whisper Of The Damned", and "The Hellion" is an instrumental. The video is nice quality, with clear audio, though the filmer could have gotten a bit closer to the band maybe. Nice work overall though! It's a solid video for sure, and the band sounds about as good as you'd expect, so check out the first four songs from Late & Loud's Dead In The Van set below, and stay tuned for more Late & Loud news as it rolls in!

Thirdly today, here's the latest news from local hard rock quartet Borderline Divine! The band formerly known as Stillbroke have added Skull After Betrayl guitarist Justin Polutanovich to their lineup as their new bassist, replacing Jake Hache. The lineup change was quietly confirmed on their Facebook page late last month, which seems to indicate that it was Borderline Divine being referred to in guitarist Mitch Sirie's bassist search post on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group last month. A reason for Jake's departure from the band hasn't been publically announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and best of luck to Jake in his musical future! Justin now becomes the band's sixth bassist in the past four years, but hopefully he can stick around for the long term! I'm not familiar with his bass work, but he's definitely a solid guitarist in Skull After Betrayl, and hopefully his talent carries over to this new band! For the record, I don't know if this indicates anything negative towards Skull After Betrayl's future, but I'll absolutely let you guys know if I hear anything good or bad. Hopefully Borderline Divine are back on a positive track again, as it's been over two years since we saw them take the stage, so if I hear anything more, I'll have it here!

And finally for today, here's some more concert videos from a recent tribute band's concert in Sault Ontario! We don't get a lot of videos from those types of concerts, but YouTube user dradawetz uploaded two videos from Toronto-based Guns N' Roses tribute band Dust N' Bones' concert at The Canadian Nightclub last Friday onto his YouTube channel the next day! The videos are of Dust N' Bones playing the GNR classics "Sweet Child O' Mine" and (as embedded below), "Welcome To The Jungle", but how do they sound? I'm getting a mixed vibe from them, mostly thanks to the singer, who's definitely trying and has a good range, but he doesn't really have the tone or stage presence yet to pull off Axl Rose on a Gunz N' FN' Rosez level. It's especially noticeable on "Sweet Child O' Mine", but I figure with more experience and fine tuning, they'll pick it up more! They're fairly new as tribute bands go as it is. Check the above links for more, and here's Dust N' Bones playing "Welcome To The Jungle" in the Soo last week!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our next Defunct Local Band Profile on Paraside TOMORROW, along with some more news probably! Thanks everyone!

Battle Of The Bands Rewind Mini-Series: The 2008 Case's Music Battle Of The Bands

It's time for our second of seven weekly installments in the SMS' Battle of the Bands Rewind Mini-Series! As we're doing every Friday until the Humane Society Battle of the Bands on April 20th, we're taking a look back at a notable Sault Ontario battle of the bands from between 2008 & 2010, and though I know this series isn't 100% comprehensive, e-mail me at robertfigures@hotmail.com if you can help add any missing battles or suggest a change or addition! This week's entry is for a notable battle of the bands through a local music store that received some good media notices, so read on below for all you should know from almost four years ago at this battle! (Updated on February 8th, 2016)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2008 Case's Music Battle Of The Bands (May 25th, 2008)

Background: An annual spring event from at least 2007-2009 under the late Mike Case's ownership of local music store Case's Music, this battle of the bands was only well documented by local news media in 2008. Still, this battle of the bands gave young local bands and musicians (many from the Case's Music Rock Camp) a chance to compete and show off their talents with a wider audience. Nine bands in the elementary & high school divisions gathered at The Canadian Nightclub on May 25th, 2008 to perform one original song and one cover each, with judges grading the bands on musicianship, originality, presentation, and songwriting ability, among other criteria, with one winner selected from each division.

Prizes: $100 and recording time at Green Room Productions went to the winners in both the elementary school division & the high school division, with no publicized awards for the other bands. Winners of the individual awards each won a free Case's Music t-shirt.

Competitors: The lineup included 9 young local bands playing varying genres of music, though which ones specifically took part in each division can be hard to determine through available video footage of this event. This battle of the bands included no less than 5 bands fronted by female singers, including Behind Society, Horizon, Imination, The Soo Country Rollers, and Vitamin X, and all played varying forms of rock, though with some punk & indie influences scattered throughout. The other four bands included hard rock quintet Stillbroke, local indie rock trio Caddy Street Avenue, and young local metal bands Fountain of Betrayal and The Unforgiven. Note that many of the competing bands shared one or two members, an occurrence that wasn't isolated to just this Case's Music event.

Results: Stillbroke took most of the evening's awards, winning first place in the high school division, and seeing band members Jesse Frigault, Nathan Bouliane, and Joseph Kargiannakis take home t-shirts for best singer, bassist, and keyboardist respectively. Fountain of Betrayal won first place in the elementary school division, while the remaining individual awards went to The Unforgiven's Ray Cowan for best guitarist & Caddy Street Avenue's Andrew Dal Cin for best drummer. The remaining seven bands did not receive a publically announced ranking, nor did any other individual performers.

Aftermath: Despite SooToday's praise of the lineup as "the future of the Sault music scene", most of the bands who competed at this battle of the bands didn't survive beyond Case's Music concerts and functions, though a couple of the bands did have some lasting success. Notably, Stillbroke's various lineups became a prominent sight through early 2010 at numerous concerts, including opening for Helix, doing some out of town shows, and releasing their debut EP "Never Enough" in the fall of 2009. After going on a lengthy break & changing their name to Borderline Divine in late 2011, they played three concerts in mid-2012 before going inactive that summer. Caddy Street Avenue had similar success in their indie rock genre, releasing a debut EP "Is This It?" in 2009 among other notable gigs following the battle, including opening for bands like The Brat Attack, before going inactive in early 2011. The remaining bands did not do much locally outside of the Case's Music umbrella that I know of after the battle, and all were likely considered inactive by 2009. I also recall The Unforgiven playing at an outdoor metal show in August 2007 at the Bellevue Park Bandshell, for what that's worth.

Some Notable Performers' Newer Bands (Metal or punk in italics):
Bring The Fallen (Travis St. Amour from Fountain of Betrayal)
Five Oceans (Patrick Dal Cin from Caddy Street Avenue; based out of London)
The Glass Thieves (Adam Fortais, Patrick Dal Cin, and Andrew Dal Cin from London; based out of London)
Joseph Kargi (Joseph Kargiannakis from Stillbroke)
Late & Loud (Josh Hatherley from Behind Society)
Lazer Queen (Josh Hatherley from Behind Society)
March Into Regression (Ray Cowan from The Unforgiven and Tyler & Travis St. Amour from Fountain of Betrayal)
The Outside Lights (Nathan Bouliane, John Armstrong, and Joseph Kargiannakis from Stillbroke)
Run Coyote (Andrew Dal Cin from Caddy Street Avenue; based out of London)
Them (Tyler St. Amour from Fountain of Betrayal)

Trivia:
  • The judges for this battle were veteran local musician & current Case's Music owner Jay Case, prominent local solo artists Shannon Moan & Tracey Hilderly, noted local rock/country singer & drummer Greg Simpson, and former Bud Shamble collaborator Rob Gilmar. Greg Simpson & Jay Case notably had some battle experience of their own the following year at the Kiss Battle of the Bands, though with differing success levels: Greg made the finals with Stiffler's Mom, but Jay's band Huckster didn't make it out of the first round. Jay later served as MC, judge, and co-organizer of the Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands in April 2013, echoing his uncle Mike's hosting of this battle.
  • Stillbroke used their recording time won at this battle to record their original song "Sick & Tired" at Green Room Productions. The song wouldn't make the cut for their debut EP "Never Enough" the following year, but the included song "No Reason" is very similar in structure. Whatever became of Fountain of Betrayal's recording time isn't publically known.
  • Photographs on an expired website from a Case's Music concert circa 2007/2008 show prolific local musician Kyle McKey playing with each band that day, including 5 of the 9 bands from the 2008 Case's Music Battle, likely implying that he worked as an instructor there at one point during the timeframe of this battle. Kyle would later become a full time member of another competing band, Stillbroke, in 2009 & early 2010.
  • After Fountain of Betrayal's dissolution, drummer Travis St. Amour kept his good battle of the bands luck going with two battle wins out of three tries with his new death metal band Bring The Fallen in December 2009 & May 2010. They also won the YMCA Battle in March 2009 under the name The Undead Warriors, but Travis hadn't joined the band yet.
  • Behind Society drummer Josh Hatherley would see greater battle success in the following years, placing third at the YMCA Battle of the Bands in March 2009 with his then-band The Glass Statues, followed by a close first place finish (and a "Best Ensemble" trophy) with his most recent band Late & Loud at the Sault Humane Society Battle of the Bands in April 2012, and another finals run with them in April 2013.
  • Stillbroke's Jesse Frigault & Sam DeDominicis would later compete at the Kiss Battle of the Bands in December 2009 with Stillbroke's classic lineup (including the aforementioned Kyle McKey and drummer Jenny Hooper), but lightning didn't strike twice for them, as they weren't voted into the finals.
  • A couple of bands featuring Stillbroke bassist Nathan Bouliane almost saw action in later battles of the bands at The Grand Theater, those being indie rock quintet The Outside Lights (featuring 3/5ths of Stillbroke's battle lineup) at the YMCA Battle in March 2009 and blues rock quartet The Moves at the Humane Society Battle in April 2012. However, both bands would drop out prior to the respective events.
  • Fountain of Betrayal frontman Tyler St. Amour was briefly scheduled to play 2015's VM Radio Battle of the Bands (also at The Canadian) with his newer death metal project Them, but they dropped out for unannounced reasons and were replaced by local metal trio Infamous, though both bands feature Anthony Boudreau on drums.

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (That's Chester), Weekend Concert Previews & Cancellations, And Much More!!

Now, let's get to some previews of this weekend's metal & hard rock concerts for this weekend, along with some assorted other stories, and in a light overall weekend, there's still some notable shows on the horizon! One was cancelled though, that being Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison's projected solo concert at The Rockstar Bar tonight, which would have kicked off a new weekly concert arrangement. According to his Facebook group, the new arrangement was postponed due to attendance concerns, specifically thanks to the CARHA Hockey World Cup going on this week, which I'll have more on in a second. Disappointing, but Tym's still on for The Rockstar Bar at a future start date, so I'll keep you posted when more on that is announced! Also, he hasn't announced a show for Bossy's Pub N' Grub on Saturday as of this writing, but if he does, I'll make sure you guys know about it! For now though, we have previews of this weekend's known metal/hard rock concerts next, starting with a CARHA-related LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!

I apologize for the lateness of this, but I only just heard about it on Tuesday, and it was too late to post without redundantly covering the same details in consecutive days. With the 2012 CARHA Hockey World Cup (for adult recreational league hockey teams) all over Sault Ontario this week, they're pulling out all the stops for entertainment and events around town, and among that entertainment is a concert set by local classic hard rock quintet That's Chester TONIGHT! They'll be rocking the Quattro Chophouse & Bar (temporarily renamed the Budweiser Hockey Lounge) inside the Comfort Suites & Conference Center (formerly The Ramada Inn) on Great Northern Road TONIGHT with a set of their hard rocking covers! Notably, they're the only non-DJ among the week's entertainment there during the CARHA World Cup, so if you want some rock with your hockey, today's the day to be there! There will also be draws, games, and drink specials for attendees from 6:00 PM onward, though That's Chester don't take the stage until 8:00 PM tonight. There's no announced cover, though bring cash just in case, and you must be 19 to attend. For more details, visit the above links or the official Facebook event page!

This is a bit different from most That's Chester shows, given the CARHA/Budweiser ties, but it sounds like a great party atmosphere at the "Budweiser Hockey Lounge" tonight for them to play in! I'm not familiar with Quattro or Comfort Suites as concert venues (though I remember attending a battle of the bands at the former Ramada Inn in 2007), but who knows, Quattro could become a future stomping ground for That's Chester if tonight's show goes well! So if you love hockey and want somewhere to party after the games tonight, or you just enjoy That's Chester, head down to this concert tonight! For a preview, here's That's Chester covering Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" a few years back!

(UPDATE, 2:23 PM) The other metal concert of the weekend was to have been the return of Garden of Bedlam to The Rockstar Bar on Saturday night for their first gig of the new year, but the concert has sadly been postponed. According to a statement released on the band's Facebook page this afternoon, frontman Erik "Buzz" Boissineau sustained some back/spinal trauma in an accident yesterday morning, and was later found to have pneumonia as well, so the band will be postponing this Saturday's show to a later date so he can get better. Nothing was said about a possible new date for the concert yet, but as soon as something is announced, I'll let you guys know for sure! This is disappointing news, but hopefully Buzz gets better real soon, as we miss Garden of Bedlam on the local stage! As of right now, their next concert will be at April 7th's Ypres Metal Fest at The Canadian Nightclub, so circle your calendars for that, and I'll keep you guys posted when more band news rolls in!

And finally for today, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last little while, and as always, these are in alphabetical order by band, musician, or promoter name:
  • Local metal standouts Gates of Winter are still slowly at work on their third CD "Perihelion", with a new workstation alive for new recordings and a poll on their Facebook page asking fans if they'd prefer for the new album to be available on CD or digital download format. I say both, but cast your votes at this link, and stay tuned for more band updates!
  • Local musician Jeremy Hannah is back in the concert booking business, and is looking for bands interested in playing at future events he'd be putting on. I think he's just looking for bands in general, but he may have something specific in mind. He has a good history with metal bands, so message him at this location or reply to his February 28th post on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group to show your interest!
  • Late & Loud guitarist Jonathan Tiberi is still looking for musicians interested in forming a new local band, though instead of the Sleep-inspired project he once suggested, he's aiming for an early Deep Purple-esque sound with "its own soul & body". Check out his post from Tuesday at this location if you're at all interested in joining or trying out, because this could be an interesting band if it takes off!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for our second of at least seven installments in our Battle of the Bands Rewind Mini-Series TOMORROW, where we're looking at the 2008 Case's Music Battle, along with our next Defunct Local Band Profile on Saturday, more news (of course), and if all goes according to plan, reviews of Garden of Bedlam's next show and "Woods V"? Fingers crossed, but stay tuned no matter what!

Lots Of Assorted News & Videos From The Last Little While!!

It's time to clear out some of the stories from our recent news cache today, as this post is dedicated to assorted stories we've missed over the last week! I know that there's a new concert tomorrow and another cancelled for tomorrow, but I don't want to redundantly cover both almost identically for consecutive days, so stay tuned early tomorrow for weekend concert previews. For now, we have news on a relaunched solo project, Ypres Metal Fest news, new Half A Man updates & this week's classic video, so here's what you need to know!

Former Browbeat frontman Dutch Vanderploeg appears to have relaunched his solo project! He posted new Facebook & Reverbnation pages on Thursday to promote his latest musical ventures, while also deleting his short lived Training Snakes project's Reverbnation page. The pages mostly reference Dutch's musical past (specifically Browbeat, who he said would probably return in the future), while discussing a bit of recent work, like the Saturday jam nights he hosts in his basement. His Reverbnation page linked above features three audio recordings, those being new versions of the Browbeat originals "Walk Away" and "Sorry", and a softer new original song named "Brighter Day", and all appear to feature Dutch's former Browbeat bandmate James White (Redundant/Caveman Morrison) on bass & backing vocals. Nice to hear these songs again, and fingers crossed that Dutch continues to work on his original material and make local waves again!

His music
(Browbeat or otherwise) has always been entertaining, and I hope these don't end up deleted like his other past projects and sites! The new song "Brighter Day" is a bit light for my tastes, but it's well performed, and hopefully there's more to come, so become a fan at the above links, and Dutch's new solo work has replaced Training Snakes in our active band links!

Next up, here's the latest updates for the Ypres Metal Fest at The Canadian Nightclub on April 7th! A 12th band has been added to the lineup for this massive David Gold memorial concert, that being North Bay black metal quartet Empyrean Plague, who were previously confirmed for the David Gold memorial show in Toronto on April 5th as well. My source is the official Facebook event page. With at least 5 common bands now on both memorial concerts, it's good to see a lot of symmetry present in David's memory! Empyrean Plague are no strangers to the Soo, having headlined the 34th Roosevelt Hotel metal night last September, and they've opened for Woods of Ypres in the north on a few occasions, so they'll be excellent fits here and in Toronto next month! The other news relating to the Ypres Metal Fest is that tickets reportedly went on sale for $20 yesterday, as per a post by promoter Rich Moreland on the event page linked above. You can reportedly buy tickets through him, David's sister Marie Gold, The Rad Zone at The Wellington Square Mall, Northland Music on Queen Street East, and The Canadian Motor Hotel's front desk, but I'll note that nothing 100% about the ticket sales has been said since Monday. You can try to get tickets now if you want, but as soon as official word on their availability is made, I'll let you guys know! Keep posted for more Ypres Metal Fest updates as they come in!

Thirdly today, here's the latest from Brimley metal quartet Half A Man! A new unmixed demo original song named "Bad Way" was posted onto the band's Facebook page on Sunday, and though it's an instrumental, it has a solid groove and is pretty heavy all around! Unfortunately, this particular file is only online via a Facebook video right now (it's not on YouTube yet), and Facebook videos are sadly unembeddable, so check it out at the above links! Not all is lost though, as a solo acoustic version of this song (with vocals) was posted onto guitarist Erik Rintamaki's YouTube channel earlier today! It's got a noticeably different tone, but it's good to hear singing on this version, and Erik lined up the words with images he found on Google to link everything nicely! Erik's singing is better suited to heavier material, I find, but you can feel emotion in his voice on this track, so check out his solo unplugged rendition of "Bad Way" below, and check out more from Half A Man at the above links!

And finally, here's this week's classic video! With Garden of Bedlam's first concert of 2012 coming up THIS SATURDAY at The Rockstar Bar, I thought I'd post another older video of theirs that's not on YouTube yet! This comes from an early concert of theirs, when they opened for inactive Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band Sikamikanico at The Other Place (last known as GLOW) in April 2008, and it's of Garden of Bedlam covering Velvet Revolver's "Slither"! Now, better quality video from this concert exists, and you can hear their "Slither" cover in full and in higher quality at this location, but it never hurts to get new views on things! This video isn't of the full song (starting during the second verse), and the audio's very scratchy, but the filmer got a good angle of Garden of Bedlam, and their talent's audible underneath the quality issues! This video was filmed by an attendee and was later uploaded to the band's Facebook group by bassist Evan Belleau at http://facebook.com/photo.php?v=17889665931. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!! All credit for this video goes to Garden of Bedlam and the original filmer, I'm just trying to share this video with a wider audience like it deserves! With that said, check out this early Garden of Bedlam video below, and stay tuned for my preview of their concert on Saturday night!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews tomorrow, our next entry in the Battle of the Bands Rewind Mini-Series on Friday, our Defunct Profile on Paraside on Saturday, and yes, our "Woods V" review is coming soon as well, along with more news! Thanks everyone!

Local Metal Video Showcase!!

Who wants to see some new videos/songs! I've got them today for our latest local metal video showcase, featuring the latest videos from a popular local metal band, the latest solo recordings from a pair of local guitarists, and some new song uploads I've made to compliment an upcoming feature post, so read on below to get caught up!

Let's start today's post with some brand new videos from local extreme metal quintet Winkstinger... sort of! As edited at least in part by Paul Boyer, two new Winkstinger videos were posted onto drummer Jonas Gasperas' YouTube channel late last week, and they feature some existing footage of the band combined with video effects to create some new uploads altogether! One, entitled "Winkstinger - The Video", features a mix of about 3 minutes of video footage culled mostly from concert videos I shot (I sure ain't complaining!), band photos, and stock footage video, mainly from old Batman serials. Interesting mix, and though no attempt is made to sync the footage with the featured songs (their cover of the Blues Brothers car chase song & their original "Stop! You Can't Interrogate Someone With Brain Damage!"), it's a fun little video that showcases Winkstinger well! The one I'm embedding below though is a video made for their song "Where'd We Go Wrong" which combines my video of them from the Garden of Bedlam-headlined Rosie metal night last July with grainy video effects and lots of weird and amusing cartoon and video clips. I like the mix of this one better for syncing with the song, and it's definitely an interesting watch, so check it out below, and see much more at the above links!

Next up is Sault Ontario solo artist Mike Cliffe's newest song "Lost Soul Blues", as posted to his YouTube channel on Saturday! Described as a "guitar oriented dark blues variant" with "mournful synth", this is definitely one of Mike's slower and darker sounding originals of recent months, but it still has a bluesy flair while sounding fairly down and deliberate. The visualizations also go with the track's mood nicely enough! Not his heaviest song, but the mood makes up for it well, so check out Mike Cliffe's newest solo song below!

Also new from local guitarists is Neno Jovanovic's new solo instrumental cover, and this time, it's of The Misfits' "Astro Zombies"! Uploaded late last month onto his YouTube channel, this is of Neno playing along with the original track again, and in this case, he sounds clearer than the original! That could be expected to a point, but he flows very well with the original song, and if you like The Misfits, you should appreciate Neno's latest cover! Check it out below, and hear more of his solo work at the above links!

And finally for today, I wanted to note the additions of a couple of new audio uploads to the SMS' YouTube channel. If you're following our schedules, Saturday will feature our next Defunct Local Band Profile on Sault Ontario hardcore quintet Paraside (featuring the Hagerman brothers from Changing Waves.) In that spirit, and like I've done in earlier months when this came up, I've decided to post some extra material from that band's heyday onto YouTube, and in this case, it's the three audio tracks that Paraside have on their MySpace page. These got lost in the shuffle a bit thanks to the Dead In The Van video uploads, but you guys should definitely know about these, especially if you enjoyed Paraside's brief late-2000s run! The songs are Paraside's originals "Butterfly" & "M.I.A.", along with their "Alarm" intro, and I've combined them into two uploads to post onto YouTube for preservation! I tacked the "Alarm" intro to the beginning of "Butterfly" to avoid posting a 45 second instrumental by itself needlessly. These were live recordings & have fairly scratchy audio, but there's glimpses of talent and chemistry underneath, and you do hear a Changing Waves-esque sound underneath the audio quality issues!

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!! All credit for these songs goes to the former members of Paraside & the hard work they did to make these songs, I'm just trying to share them with a wider audience! These are good glimpses back to 2007 & 2008 despite the recording quality, so check out Paraside's songs at the above links, and here's their "Alarm" intro, followed by "Butterfly"!

That's probably all for today, but stay tuned later this week for more news, our Paraside profile, and hopefully my review of "Woods V", among other posts! Thanks everyone!
