New Additions & Removals To Our Band Links, Plus More Assorted Updates!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to apologize for a missed concert in this weekend's concert previews, as local acoustic hard rock quartet The Wyld Stallyns returned to The Whisky Barrel on Gore Street last night. The band did not announce this date on their Facebook page in advance, but the venue did announce the show last Sunday when revealing their full slate of live entertainment on weekends this month (The Stallyns are not advertised as playing the rest of the month there, FYI). I profusely apologize again, I'd have covered this had I checked the venue page or if the band had plugged it publically, but hopefully the show was a hit!

Now, today's post features some new videos, a few assorted updates, and new additions and removals to our band links, and we'll start positively with the new band, namely Sault Michigan hard rock quartet The Nameless! As our E.U.P. readers may recall, The Nameless debuted at Three One Three on Ashmun in April to open for the also-debuting Buddy Repperton & The Camaros, but their Facebook page presence has always been somewhat cryptic, still not even revealing their full lineup. I can confirm two band members (singer/guitarist Joshua LaCoursiere and ex-Tantrym Tyme bassist Michael McLeod), but their second guitarist and drummer haven't even been named on personal Facebook posts that I've located (the drummer isn't even in most pictures!) We'll let you know if we hear anything, but the band definitely crosses the hard rock line, and we now know that via their first proper video, so what can we see there?

Visually, not a lot, due to the dark stage lighting and placement of the band members, with the second guitarist not in frame whatsoever. Good thing Joshua was in white! Their near-hour long, all-covers set features many songs familiar to FM rock radio listeners, including (in order) Three Doors Down's "Kryptonite", Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy", System of a Down's "Lonely Day", The Offspring's "The Kids Aren't Alright", Chevelle's "The Red", The Animals' "The House Of The Rising Sun", Collective Soul's "December", 30 Seconds To Mars' "The Kill (Bury Me)", Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Blue On Black", and Seven Mary Three's "Cumbersome", before closing with an instrumental that sounded kinda familiar. The guys didn't really introduce themselves or banter with the crowd between songs aside from encouraging fans to get on the floor once or twice, but Camaros frontman David Waite did take to the mic afterwards to thank them for the set.

If you believe David, he named them The Nameless in reference to their then-lack of a name! As for The Nameless as a band, they're quite promising and I like the diversity of their set while still injecting a heavy flavour, including a surprisingly high amount of screamed backing vocals on songs that didn't have them! The lighting and tight camera angle don't help this as something to watch, but there is something here, and hopefully The Nameless can make a real name for themselves in the E.U.P. as 2022 continues! I can't embed it here due to Facebook flagging it for copyrighted content, likely the Theory of a Deadman song played over the venue's P.A. at the very beginning.

Next up, here's the band that I have reluctantly moved to our inactive Sault Ontario band links, namely local acoustic punk solo project Slumshine. They have not issued any public updates or played an announced concert date since releasing their newest EP "Slumlord" in May of last year, perhaps not uncoincidentally the same week as when project leader Brenton Ellis launched his current band project These Magnificent Tentacles. Active off & on from 2017-2021, Brent donned a pink knit ski mask and employed plural pronouns with Slumshine, a folk-inspired punk project who opened for touring bands like Dany Laj & The Looks, The Faps, and The River Jacks in the late 2010s, while also appearing at the third Oh!No festival in Leeburn, and releasing their demo EP "SLMSHN" exclusively on cassette tapes in July 2019. After launching their Facebook page that January, Slumshine's 2020 plans were decimated by the pandemic.

Brent did resurface in the spring of 2021 with new studio material, but a teased second cassette tape release never occurred, and it looks like Brent has switched focus to These Magnificent Tentacles since. Slumshine definitely had a unique presence that was adaptable well to unplugged-friendly venues and electric punk shows alike, and the DIY nature influenced by Brent's own visual artwork also helped set them apart. Hopefully Slumshine resurface down the road, but follow These Magnificent Tentacles to see what Brent and crew are up to nowadays!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

• The tenth annual Algoma Ride For Autism will take place on Saturday, June 18th with The Esquire Club as a home base, and local classic rock veterans Angry Joe & The Growlers as this year's featured band. The autism awareness/support motorcycle rally was never cancelled outright during the pandemic, but this year's looks to be a complete return to 2010s form after post-lockdown adjustments the last two years, and while there's no hard rock band this year, the charitable cause is obviously most important. • Former Project 421/Re:Born guitarist Blair Burch is looking to get back into the live music scene, specifically via "an outlet" that doesn't require distortion or growled death metal vocals. Blair is accustomed to classic hard rock, hair metal, and power metal, and he'd be most comfortable in a band with a second guitarist. He also emphasized wanting to actually play music, not in a band where that's seemingly secondary to drinking alcohol. Given Blair's experience and talents, it should be easy to find a new band or at least someone to jam with, but message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted group post from Wednesday if you want more details on Blair's return to the scene!
  
• As it turns out, singer/guitarist Mitch Sirie did leave revived local death metal band Exploring Detritus, a fact he confirmed with me in a Facebook conversation yesterday. Mitch said that he left due to his own busy personal schedule, which lines up given his ongoing work in Handsome Sandwich, These Magnificent Tentacles, and the teased new metal band he was looking for members for, not to mention The Bear Hunters if they resurface. No word on when Exploring Detritus will confirm their vocalist status, but guitarist Dan Souliere has been providing vocals in their recent jam session clips. We'll keep you posted when more comes out!

Michigan COVID-19 Updates & Concert Cancellations, Plus Sault Ontario News & Notes!!

Here is our 80th straight daily post at the SMS, and it includes some assorted recent news and notes, details on an ambitious project to catalogue local music history (something readers should all care about), and leading off, the latest updates on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Michigan. Here's what you should know!

On Tuesday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer lifted the state's stay-at-home order, and if you want to read into the minutia about that announcement, there's plenty of articles about it on state news websites. The Sault Evening News outlined what you can and can't do now in this article published yesterday, and sadly, concerts as we know them are still prohibited for the time being. Indoor gatherings of more than 10 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 100 are still not allowed in Michigan, and even if something were to be booked, social distancing measures of 6+ feet remain in effect. The announcement doesn't change anything re: restaurant and bars in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan, which were previously allowed to open with appropriate social distancing measures and can still do so (the rest of the state can open these businesses on Monday.) As for casinos, the closure of Michigan casinos until June 12th actually only applies to those under state jurisdiction.

Specifically, this means that tribal casinos (like the Kewadin Casino branches and Bay Mills in Brimley) could begin re-opening this past weekend, but both appear to be exercising caution, as both have clearly announced on social media that they will also remain closed until June 12th. The short term future of concerts at these casinos still doesn't look good, and they took another hit on Friday, when Kewadin formally cancelled the Tripp 'N' Dixie show at The Rapids Lounge in the Soo on June 13th, as per that show's Facebook event page. Also, Kewadin's website's entertainment page has announced that "all events are temporarily postponed until further notice", which covers any concerts booked through at least the Fourth of July. As such, I have removed Tarnished's Signatures Lounge dates in the Soo on June 18th & 24th from our calendar, as well as Highway 63's Northern Pines Lounge shows in St. Ignace on July 3rd & 4th.

As such, our Sault Michigan calendar is now empty until the rescheduled Black Label Society concert at The Dreammaker's Theater on August 8th, but if I was a betting man, I wouldn't be gambling on the new date holding up, alas. Stay tuned to the SMS and your preferred Michigan news source for further details on the coronavirus pandemic and it's effect on concerts as they roll in!

Next up, let's move to Sault Ontario, where Rotaryfest music director Shaun Antler is working on a big project, specifically to catalogue and archive a list of as many local bands as possible. The project was covered in this Sault Star article by Brian Kelly on May 28th, and began in  conjunction with Rotaryfest's Rewind anniversary stages two years ago, but recently resumed work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shaun plans to wrap up things by the end of the month and share her results with the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, with plans to create a music exhibit at the museum in the future using her data. This is definitely a daunting project, especially when trying to catalogue and cite information on local bands before social media. I've given 2005 as my cutoff for reasonable online materials before, but as websites close and overhaul their layouts, that gets harder too. A handful of SMS-relevant bands are cited in the article as needing member information, such as Free Beer, Smeltzer, and Them. I have helped Shaun with this project, and while members of those bands have been covered on the SMS in the past, social media aliases and common names may be tripping up some of her leads. I hope to send her some more info shortly, but contact her above if you want to help out! Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

• This probably goes without saying, but this year's Algoma Ride For Autism (scheduled for June 20th) has been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers confirmed this on their Facebook page on Tuesday, but they do hope to bring the event back in 2021. This is SMS relevant because live music has been a staple of the charity motorcycle rally's festivities, including a run of annual sets by local punk veterans Redundant. Hopefully the Ride does return next year, it's a great event for a great cause!
• Local guitarist Michael McCormick is looking for a singer for his current hard rock band project, who take inspiration from bands like The Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Metallica, and Poison. Specifically, he wants someone with "good frontman skills", but singing ability isn't necessarily his primary concern. I'm not familiar with Michael musically, but his post is attracting interest, so message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post on Sunday for more details! Just use common sense given the pandemic.
• Had an active social media account existed for them, I would have recently moved Bear Hunters guitarist Mitch Sirie's solo project The Sorrow Fields to our inactive band links. This project last saw a public update via Mission Control Studios' Facebook postings on their unreleased debut album's sessions in January 2019, and Mitch's personal Facebook page (which saw occasional Sorrow Fields updates) was quietly taken down in recent months as well. Hopefully nothing bad happened, as Mitch is a very talented musician, and I hope we'll see The Sorrow Fields and Bear Hunters' long-gestating albums on sale down the road!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Parabol & The Elements), The Studio 10 Fire, And Much More!!

Here's a new news post for your Saturday afternoon reading, so what can you find here? A bunch of assorted updates, some overdue coverage on a devastating news event from earlier this week, and leading off, some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for next month. Here's what you should know!

Local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements will reprise their role as backing musicians for another round of live band karaoke at The Rockstar Bar on Saturday, March 16th as part of their St. Patrick's Day weekend festivities! An encore for this style of event that debuted last month, The Elements proper will rock out with karaoke singers (and Rob presumably when none are ready) on this night, though it'll be a special abbreviated gig, as they will immediately follow a triple header of out of town stand-up comedians, the first such booking from Six, Two, Oh.. It'll be interesting to see how that event does, so click here for full details on the performers and admission info therein! As such, The Elements' set proper will have a late start time of 12:00 AM, technically placing it at the beginning of St. Patrick's Day itself, so what better way to ring in the holiday? Yes, The Rockstar Bar will have green beer.

A presentation of (Choose) Maxx Entertainment, this concert is definitely 19+, and while the stand-up comedy show has a $5 cover charge, I don't think that would apply if you just came at midnight to see The Elements and/or sing karaoke with them. Looks like a fun night of diverse entertainment next month to get in touch with the Irish spirit with, and The Elements should deliver some hard rocking tunes, with or without karaoke singers! Next up, The Elements aren't done for shows at The Rockstar Bar next month, as they'll reprise their Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band alter ego on Saturday, March 23rd when they open for new local Tool tribute band Parabol once again! Basically a direct encore to the two bands' joint tribute concert at the same venue in December, this will be Parabol's third public concert appearance, their first of 2019, and first since confirming their permanent name. With this local supergroup's faithful sounding and technically proficient tribute to Tool winning them many fans last year, how will they perform for concert #3 next month? Of course, The Elements are no strangers to The Chili Peppers, but on March 23rd, they'll take on a temporary tribute band moniker, performing under the name Scar Tissue. Fitting name, but given Jesse Cook's involvement, I'm surprised they don't just recycle the name of his 2007-2008 Chili Peppers tribute band Sikamikanico.

Another presentation of Maxx Entertainment, this concert has a $5 cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and a 9:00 PM start time. This should be a fun night of familiar tunes from two proficient and chemistry-filled tribute acts, so visit the official Facebook event page for more on Parabol and "Scar Tissue" returning to The Rockstar Bar next month!

Also today, I thought I should give some overdue thoughts on a recent major news event, namely the severe fire at The Dime Nightclub (better previously known as Studio 10) this past Sunday and Monday. As well documented in local news media, the 89 Hudson Street venue and it's on-site apartment buildings were destroyed by the fire, which police are not treating as suspicious, and the fire unfortunately took the life of a 60 year old tenant (our best thoughts and wishes are with his family and friends.) The remnants of the building have since been torn down, and you can read more on the fire proper and response on relevant news websites. Though primarily known in recent years for it's exotic adult entertainment, SMS readers will recall Studio 10 as the host of a handful of Havadder concerts from 2014-2016, while it was a far more active concert venue in the 1970s and 1980s, playing host to numerous bands back when it was known as The New Ontario Hotel.

As it wasn't a regular concert venue for most of my adulthood, I can't remark first hand on Studio 10/The Dime, but it's unfortunate to lose a familiar downtown venue that provided entertainment, employment, and a home for many locals. Visit local news websites for much more on the fire and response, and our best goes out to every employee, tenant, and customer affected by this devastating event.

• Algoma Ride For Autism is looking for bands to play during this year's charity motorcycle rally on Friday, June 14th. No word on location or timing, but for reference, local punk trio Redundant were among performers at last year's official afterparty at The Verdi Hall, while prior years featured live bands before the rally. If you're interested in playing this year, contact organizers at this link, and stay tuned for updates as they roll in!
• Local arts & culture Facebook page SooSpin is looking for local albums on CD or vinyl for an unspecified project. I have no insider knowledge on what they're doing, but if you're interested in donating or loaning any local albums, contact SooSpin at this link!
• A SaultOnline article by Megan Pounder from Sunday speculates that The Tech may have closed for good, based on inspection notices being posted on the front door, businesses moving out, and calls to building owners going unanswered. SMS readers will best know the former Lakeway/St. Mary's building and it's W.W. Baldwin Auditorium as an occasional concert venue for events like The Sky's The Limit, The Soo's Got Talent, and The Din's CD release party. A positive picture wasn't painted by SaultOnline, but hopefully things get resolved for all parties, and that 130 Wellington Street East finds a permanent use again down the road!

This Weekend's Remaining Hard Rock & Punk Concert Previews, Including A Postponement!!

Let's just take care of the second half of this weekend's concert previews tonight before we forget about them! On this busy weekend, we already tackled shows from The Elements, sister band The Wyld Stallyns, Soundcheck, and Tym Morrison earlier today, so look for those previews in the post below, but here's the rest of the heavier and punk shows to watch for this weekend, along with a postponed concert, but all recieved plenty of advance notice! Here's what you should know!

A partial sequel to March's Punk Covers Night at LopLops Lounge goes down at the same venue TOMORROW NIGHT, where that show's lineup (sans Redundant) returns for another night of high impact punk rock renditions! Headlining tomorrow are online page-less punk supergroup The Cover-Up (featuring Surfers, Rising Tide, Lion Ride, and K.I.C.K. alumni), whose setlist is floating around on personal Facebook accounts, and if things line up, a lot of familiar and up-tempo punk favourites are in store tomorrow night from them! Opening are the similarly online page-less punk trio The Bananas Guerrillas, who themselves feature Stereo North, Long Shot, and Gnaeus alumni in their own talented lineup. If you missed them in March or at their Blink-182 tribute debut last fall, prepare for more punk rock action from them to start at LopLops tomorrow, and a setlist is floating around for them too! This concert is presented by Tidal Records, though it curiously hasn't been promoted by the venue proper online at press time.

A $5 cover charge is in effect for tomorrow's concert, which has doors opening at 9:00 PM, and a 19+ age limit. Despite the lack of online pages for tomorrow's bands (not to mention public videos of them in concert), both The Cover-Up and The Bananas Guerrillas are loaded with talent and familiar faces who have a firm grasp of punk rock from the 1990s and 2000s, so don't miss either band at LopLops tomorrow night!

Next up, we'll head south to the Eastern Upper Peninsula, where Traverse City, Michigan classic metal trio Peril will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! These shows will surprisingly be the Scarkazm sister band's first concerts in St. Ignace of 2018, last having played at this Kewadin branch in October, with dates at the Soo Kewadin and in Harbor Springs filling their schedule in the interim. This fan favourite trio should have another hard hitting weekend of familiar covers ready to go for fans in St. Ignace tomorrow and Saturday, so keep one/both shows in mind for your weekend plans! As usual for Peril's Kewadin concert weekends, expect 9:00 PM start times tomorrow and Saturday night, you must be 21 or older to attend, and there are no announced cover charges. Also this weekend, let's head back to Sault Ontario, where local punk trio Redundant are among the performers for Algoma Ride For Autism's official after party THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at The Bridge View Banquet Hall (a.k.a. The Verdi Hall!) This is the fifth straight year of involvement for Redundant or frontman Justin Langlois with the annual autism awareness motorcycle rally, as the guys played their annual family fun day from 2014-2016, while Justin played a special solo set at their pre-ride fundraiser last year. In 2018, the live musical component moves to the Queen Street West banquet hall as an afterparty once the rally proper concludes, with supper, live music, and some sort of prize/raffle element also on hand for the cause. Redundant will be joined by local classic rock veterans (Tex &) The Ride, but two new bands were also confirmed in recent days on the ride's Facebook page, namely local country/bluegrass trio A Band Named Soo and Korah Collegiate's school band Mustang Sally, in advance of their Rotaryfest return next month.

Quite the varied lineup to be sure, and it's great to see the two new bands sign on to help support the ride and the ongoing work to understand and manage autism! Admission for this licensed event (which appears to be all ages) is $20, but full Algoma Ride For Autism participants will get in for free with their registration. All of the musical entertainment starts at 6:00 PM tomorrow, so visit the Facebook event page and the above links for full details (including on how to participate in the actual rally), and here's Redundant live in concert a few years back!

Finally, we were going to wrap up this post with a preview of the previously announced Project 906 show at the Back Bay Grill & Games at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley, Michigan this Saturday, but it turns out that both this concert and their Saturday, August 11th show at the same venue have quietly been postponed to June 30th and September 1st respectively. Reasons for the postponements weren't announced, but note that Project 906 themselves had not acknowledged the shows online publically, we first learned of them via Bay Mills' events calendar in April. In their place, both of the original dates have been taken over by The 3 Wisemen, a new local classic rock band featuring former Bad Side drummer Jonah Brockman. I don't know much about The 3 Wisemen yet, but it'll be interesting to hear some media of them or see what songs they cover at some point!  Keep the shifted dates in mind, and don't miss Project 906's next concerts in Sault Ste. Marie and in Eckerman next weekend!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Redundant, Banned, And Half Of Project 906), Plus A Dire Setback Updates!!

A new post was not planned for today, but with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS now known for the Eastern Upper Peninsula, I have thrown this post together with those, another new show for next month, and a local band's recent album progress! Also, just a reminder that TONIGHT is Six, Two, Oh.'s (short notice) 1990s dance party fundraiser at The Rockstar Bar, with proceeds going towards this fall's Oh!No festival in Leeburn. This is not a concert, but if you love the 1990s and want to ensure that Oh!No II is on, why not come down? 19+, $5, 9:00 PM! Now, here's those new concerts!

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned will play a special charity set TONIGHT in their hometown at the Chippewa County Fairgrounds as part of Carol's Corral Foundation's first annual rodeo fundraiser! Profuse apologies for the short notice, this event had been announced since January, but Banned only confirmed their involvement via their own Facebook event page this afternoon. Also called the "Bull-Rageous & Barrel-Rama Rodeo 2018" on event advertising, this is actually a three day ALL AGES event with bull riding, barrel racing, and other such rodeo entertainment, with proceeds going to different charities each day (TONIGHT's for law enforcement and emergency groups, tomorrow's veterans and active military, and Sunday's for cancer patients), which are all worthy causes! A beer tent and food will be available all three days, with the rodeo itself starting at 7:00 PM, and live musical entertainment each night following at 8:00 PM. Banned are only playing TONIGHT, while solo musician Bill Badour is the only other advertised performer this weekend.

I wish Banned had gave more notice about this set, but with a great charitable cause each night, hopefully this rodeo fundraiser is a smash hit, so head down to 124 Fair Street TONIGHT if you want some classic and hard rock cover action with your rodeo fun! Admission for all three nights (TONIGHT included) is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and youths 13-18 years old, and FREE for kids 12 and under. Next up, Project 906 bandmates Billy Bernier and Joe Jenkins will play a rare duo set TOMORROW NIGHT at The Superior Cafe in Sault Michigan as part of that venue's second musicians showcase! Again, apologies for the short notice, we only heard of the involvement of any Project 906 members via their Facebook page yesterday. Soon to be two events into their permanent shift from competitions to "showcases", The Superior Cafe have indicated that they will be hosting this event on the last Saturday of every month (in other words, circle June 30th on your calendars), so how will the sophomore event of this style go, and who all else signed up as part of the "full lineup"? Find out TOMORROW NIGHT! Billy & Joe are no strangers to playing unplugged in this setting, having played at the Superior Cafe's first musician competition as such, though with their full band sets more common, how will their hard and blues rock covers sound in a more intimate setting?

Project 906's advertising also notes that Crooked Music owner, Half Stupid alum, and local solo musician Zac Crook will guest with them for Billy & Joe's set TOMORROW, which should be interesting, so keep watch for him then! Billy & Joe will apparently be on at around 6:30 PM, but the showcase proper begins at 5:00 PM. This is an ALL AGES event, and there is no announced cover charge. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and consider a run to The Superior Cafe at 107 East Portage Avenue for lots of talented local musicians! We don't have a public video of Billy & Joe alone to preview their set with here, hopefully one turns up.

Moving to Sault Ontario for a concert with plenty of advance notice, local punk trio Redundant will be among the live entertainment on Saturday, June 16th for Algoma Ride For Autism's afterparty at The Bridge View Banquet Hall! Involvement from Redundant with the annual autism awareness/fundraiser motorcycle rally is nothing new, as frontman Justin Langlois played a solo set at their pre-ride fundraiser at The Canadian last year, while Redundant played the AR4A's annual family fun day from 2014-2016, so it's great to see the guys lending their support once again! The other band playing on the 16th is country rock cover band The Ride (billed as Tex & The Ride), who should deliver for genre fans next month as well! Involvement in the motorcycle rally proper is not required to attend the afterparty, which has a $20 admission fee, though riders will get in free if you are a full participant. The afterparty proper starts at 6:00 PM, and I presume it's all ages (the venue appears to be licensed.)

And yes, there will be a pasta dinner provided. For reference, the Facebook event page implies that The Grand Gardens now owns the Bridge View Banquet Hall (formerly The Verdi Hall), but if the name changed, I haven't seen official reference to it. It's great to see live concert action returning to help gain proceeds and awareness for the Ride For Autism, and hopefully this year's installment is a huge hit for the cause! We'll close today with the latest from local alt-punk trio A Dire Setback, as they began final recordings of their debut album on Sunday! The guys started this process with Nick Kainula's drum tracks, and you can follow the progress of the recordings on their Facebook page and (if you're backing them) their Patreon page. Things sound like they're going well so far, if challenging, and hopefully sessions are on track! A Dire Setback did share this video on Facebook on Monday of Nick tracking drums in studio, and he's solidly in the groove on this clip! The camera moves around well to show off their recording studio and setup also, and with the other tracks only audible to him on his headset, this is a unique way to hear an isolated track before the final song is compiled. Rock 4 Autism Fallout & Videos, Woods Of Ypres News, And Much More!

On this Monday afternoon, let's tackle some new stories and updates found and reported over the last few days! Today, you'll find assorted shorter topics, a new commercial for a prominent former band's  album re-release, and first, some fallout and footage from a recent charity concert, so here's what you should know!

As you may remember, Saturday night saw the Rock 4 Autism fundraiser concert take place at The Canadian Nightclub, and based on social media accounts, it was a hit, with $1,000 expected to be raised total, and plans to hold a sequel event next year are already being teased on the Algoma Ride For Autism Facebook page! SooToday's Jeff Klassen was also on hand, posting this article from the show on Monday, which also features five photos of The 3 Day Millionaires' set and one of a fan (sadly, the other bands weren't captured.) The photos he did get were solid though! As for videos, Algoma Ride For Autism live streamed three videos from the show onto their Facebook page on Saturday, including one of country rock cover headliners Bone Yard covering The Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See". This is a fine rendition for genre fans, but the audio is unusually crackly, which somehow didn't afflict the other videos from Saturday night.

The aforementioned 3 Day Millionaires were filmed covering Ugly Kid Joe's "Everything About You", and the classic/hard rock cover quartet handled this song well, as fans of their regular live sets have become accustomed to! Unfortunately, this is just 63 seconds long, is filmed on the vertical cell phone camera angle, and is shot at a far angle from the stage until the last 20 seconds, when the filmer got closer, so keep all of that in mind. Lastly from this concert, punk trio Redundant's original "That December" was filmed on Saturday as well, curiously appearing to be a solo acoustic rendition from frontman Justin Langlois, with no apparent input from the White brothers (a personal Facebook photo also features Justin alone performing on stage.) No word on where James and Rick were, but Justin sounds good on this familiar original, though the filmer took this from a very far table in the corner of The Canadian, so Justin and the stage are barely visible in the background. Give Justin's solo clip a look/listen below!

Also today, here's a new commercial for the vinyl re-release of defunct local doom/black metal band Woods of Ypres' final album "Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light"! It's not every day when a new "official" Woods video makes it's way online, but this comes straight from label Earache Records' YouTube channel on March 3rd to hype what they're calling their "most requested vinyl repress in recent years", with new copies again going on sale last month to go along with existing CD stock. The video features an Earache representative displaying and opening up a vinyl copy of "Woods 5", with "Career Suicide (Is Not Real Suicide)" as the backing track, select lyrics on screen, and video clips from their music video for "I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery" scattered within, before noting the pre-order link and closing with "R.I.P. David Gold". The vinyl copies of the album cost $18.59 (including taxes), and you can order your own copy by visiting this link!

We've now crossed 5 years since losing David, so it's great to see that Earache is still supporting and selling Woods of Ypres albums, and if there's the extra demand to get "Woods V" on vinyl once again, you know that's a good sign for their fanbase and legacy! Also, before anyone nitpicks that they used the video for a "Woods IV" song in the "Woods V" promotional clip, remember that they only made two music videos, and this one at least features David, Joel, and the doom metal ambiance. Finally, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• Ticket details are now out for the Diamond Head concert at The Rockstar Bar on September 2nd, and they went on sale online at this link for $22.50 (minus service fees) this morning, though a website issue was ongoing at press time. No word on in person local availability yet, but get your tickets A.S.A.P. when you can, especially as this will reportedly be the most intimate venue on the NWOBHM pioneers' upcoming tour! For what it's worth, prior listings of a third local opening band to be announced have been removed from the Facebook event page.
• Curious for information on debuting "drone/noise/psych" trio Pointless ahead of their first set at FRIDAY'S Soo Art Rocks concert? Though they still lack an online page or media, promoters Live705 revealed on the Facebook event page yesterday that their lineup consists of Treble Charger guitarist Bill Priddle, Pillory/Peach Thieves bassist Jordan Leach, and former Ashes To Dust drummer David Peredun. Intriguing lineup, but how will they sound? Find out Friday at The Canadian, and stay tuned for our preview!
• This is just a clarification note, but if you've seen physical posters around town advertising reunited punk quartet Talk Shit as the openers for next week's Alberta Intrusion concert at The New American Pub, note that they are old posters, and Stegadeth replaced them before the show had it's first public announcement online (a personal Facebook video from early March featuring this poster came weeks prior to the event page's launch.). If you haven't seen the posters listing Talk Shit, a tiny one is on the bulletin board at the Food Basics on Pine Street. Don't miss this trifecta of Alberta punk bands and Stegadeth next week!

Sault Michigan & Rock 4 Autism Weekend Concert Previews!!

As promised, here's the rest of this weekend's hard rock concert previews, barring potential late notice confirmations! For this weekend's Sault Ontario hard rock events that aren't Saturday night only, check out our post from this morning, but here, we have one more Sault Ontario concert and this weekend's hard rock gigs in the E.U.P, so here's what you should know!

We'll start at The Satisfied Frog, where Marquette, Michigan hard rock quartet Spun will make their local concert debuts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! If Spun look familiar, then you're not wrong, as they are essentially the successors to defunct Frog regulars Nudge, who disbanded last fall after Danzo McCracken departed and formed Reality Bites. We've seen that band locally multiple times since, but this weekend will be your first local chance to see Tim Prisk, Bob Libick, Bob Crawford, and new guitarist Doug Pennala together under the Spun name. With a similar sound & range of covers in store, Nudge fans should be eager for this weekend's concerts! 9:00 PM start times are in effect for this weekend, you must be 21 or older to attend, and there are no announced cover charges. Next up, Traverse City metal trio Scarkazm will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT themselves! Two weeks removed from their involvement in the Soo Kewadin's "80's Hair Band Rock Fest", this will be Scarkazm's first concert weekend in St. Ignace in almost two months, and as far as I can tell, does not contain any special themes like they had last month. Adam, Dave, and Jeff should have a solid weekend of hard rocking covers and select originals in store for local fans when they head back north to St. Ignace over the next two nights, so don't miss out if you're a fan! They won't be back there until late July, after all. As usual for their local concert weekends, expect 9:00 PM start times, no announced cover, and 21+ age limits. Just as an aside, it looks like Scarkazm have replaced sister band Peril for the July 14th-15th concert weekend at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino, as Scarkazm have launched Facebook event pages for those Rapids Lounge two shows (linked here & here.) A reason for the apparent band switch wasn't announced, but given that the two bands share two members, maybe Brooks Elliott has a scheduling conflict that weekend? Kewadin's entertainment page still lists Peril for that weekend, but unless they confirm otherwise,  keep these now-Scarkazm shows in mind for this summer, and as for this weekend's preview, here's Scarkazm live!



Rounding out a busy week on the hard rock spectrum in the E.U.P., Kinross classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Last seen in Hessel last month, these will be the Traynors & Wayne's first shows in the Soo in almost two months, and their first since frontman Alex Traynor's recent uploads of material towards his solo project. Banned's skilled and wide ranging brand of covers should find another solid audience at the Soo Kewadin this weekend, so keep their return to this popular venue in mind! Note that Banned are not currently scheduled for any more Kewadin Casino gigs at either branch for the remainder of 2017, but there are open weekends at both lounges, so don't panic just yet. As usual for Banned's Kewadin gigs, expect 9:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 21+ age limits. Visit the official Facebook event page for details, and here's Banned live!



Finally for this weekend's previews, we'll head north to Sault Ontario for Rock 4 Autism, a special fundraiser concert at The Canadian Nightclub THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, where three local bands will join forces to help kick off this year's kick-off event for the fifth annual Algoma Ride For Autism motorcycle rally next month! Proceeds from the concert will go towards the Algoma Autism Foundation's Sensory Lending Library, while pre-registration for the rally will also be taking place, so keep these great charitable causes in mind! The announced headliners are local country rock cover quartet and past Ride performers Bone Yard, but the varied lineup does dip into SMS territory via the inclusion of veteran punk trio Redundant and classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires. Redundant are a very fitting choice, given that they've played at the Ride for Autism's Family Fun Day for three years running, and it'll be nice to see The Millionaires in their Canadian debut as well!

An early start time of 8:00 PM is in effect for this 19+ event, and admission is $10 at the door or via advance purchase at The Canadian Motor Hotel's front desk, and you can also get pledge forms and t-shirts for the Algoma Ride For Autism on Saturday too. Sounds like a great event for a great purpose, and hopefully this is a good starting point for the ride proper on June 13th! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Stiffler's Mom & Redundant), Plus New Videos!!

As we continue to clear out a recent glut of news and updates at the SMS, here's a new post for your Sunday morning! This is half devoted to new videos, one being a live clip and one that certainly isn't, but first, here's a pair of LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the spring season!

Local party hard rock cover trio Stiffler's Mom will return to The Rockstar Bar for one night only on Friday, March 24th! Announced with an unusually good amount of notice, we first heard about this concert via this March concert calendar photo from singer/drummer Greg Simpson's promotional company (Choose) Maxx Entertainment's Facebook page yesterday, which also confirms that his country cover band Bone Yard will be playing each of the next three weekends beforehand at varying venues, so keep those in mind if you're a country fan. No word as of yet who's playing at The Rockstar Bar on Saturday the 25th (or why they're not doubling up that weekend), but Stiffler's Mom's fan favourite covers should keep things rocking all night in three weeks time, so don't miss out on the 24th! Next up, the aforementioned Bone Yard will join local punk veterans Redundant and classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires at The Canadian Nightclub on Saturday, May 6th for a special fundraiser concert entitled Rock 4 Autism! The show is being treated as a kick-off event for the fifth annual Algoma Ride For Autism motorcycle rally (which returns in June), and attendees can pre-register for the rally at The Canadian that night, while all proceeds will be used to help buy sensory equipment for the Algoma Autism Foundation's Sensory Lending Library, so keep that worthy cause in mind! Redundant in particular are no strangers to Ride For Autism-related events, having played the rally's Family Fun Day each of the past three years, and it's great to see them playing their first announced show of 2017 in May, while the Millionaires (in their apparent Canadian debut) and Ride For Sight veterans Bone Yard should provide their own entertaining cover favourites as well in two months!

An oddly early start time of 8:00 PM is listed for Rock 4 Autism, which will have $10 advance tickets (sale details to be announced) and a presumed 19+ age limit. In a way, this is like a mini-sequel to Toystock, given that all three bands played the annual Christmas Cheer fundraiser last fall, and the guys' continued charitable natures is awesome to see, so don't miss Rock 4 Autism on May 6th, and visit the official Facebook event page for full details!

We'll close today with new videos, starting with yet another video from The Din's headlining concert at LopLops Lounge last month, as per their YouTube channel on Friday! The fifth of their videos from this show, this is the local alternative/hard rock trio's rendition of frontman Mike Haggith's solo song "Of Cars & Criminals", which is only played live occasionally and isn't on their studio album (though it is on "The Din Does Laundry".) The quality is precisely the same as their other videos from this concert, but it is a solid performance, and the staggered release of the videos means that each gets it's own spotlight, so I give them that! Finally, here's a somewhat cryptic new video from newer local concert promotion agency Live705's YouTube channel on Wednesday, and it's a 19 second computer-animated clip of a futuristic lighted platform being turned on, with a previously unseen band logo in the center. The logo feels pasted on as an afterthought, but what does this video mean? The title implies that it's an "intro", but for what? Are they planning to have a title bug before future videos, or perhaps in concert with a screen? I have no idea, but give it a look below, and don't miss their next show at The Canadian on SATURDAY!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The 3 Day Millionaires), Sault Ontario Weekend Concert Previews, And A New Video!!

Another weekend is upon us, so here's out first weekend concert preview post! With a few Sault Michigan hard rock shows known for Saturday, including one big out-of-town headliner, we'll hold them for tomorrow's post, as well as any potential late notice confirmations, so don't worry, they're coming! Now, here's what you should know for this weekend in Sault Ontario, including a newly posted concert video to fill things out!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will return to the stage for another weekend of hits TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced these shows via the official Facebook event page on Tuesday. Though The 3 Day Millionaires are two weeks removed from their last Rockstar Bar shows, members Travis Sharpe & Scott McLurg are entering their third straight weekend at this venue, following shows there with their sister band Havadder last week. The guys have been staying busy this weekend, and their hard and classic rock favourites should find another strong audience TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so keep both shows in mind! There's NO COVER for this weekend, you must be 19 or older to attend, and both shows have 10:30 PM start times. See above for more details, and here's The 3 Day Millionaires live!



Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts, including the ongoing weekly concert arrangement at Gliss Steak & Seafood from local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison, which continues as usual TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Though Tym hasn't posted Facebook event pages for this weekend's shows as of this writing, they're surely coming for these latest gigs in his long-term run at The Quality Inn's house restaurant, and fans of his skilled acoustic covers should be ready for another busy weekend at Gliss! As usual for his run of matinee shows there, 6:00 PM start times are to be expected for these shows, and while there's no announced cover charges or age limits, remember that this is a sit-down restaurant. Also, Tym will be keeping busy with one more show this weekend, as he'll return to Runway Park THIS SATURDAY as part of the musical entertainment at this year's Family Fun Day for the Algoma Autism Foundation's annual Algoma Ride For Autism motorcycle rally! Tym will join local punk trio Redundant (in their third straight appearance at this event), so if you've missed seeing Redundant live in the past year, this might be worth checking out for them alone! Like in past years, this fundraising event coincides with the annual motorcycle rally to raise awareness and money for autism charities, a'la the Ride for Sight, so whether you want to ride in the city-wide rally or just support the cause, see the above links for complete details! Alongside the above artists (no one else is publically advertised), family entertainment at Runway Park on Saturday will include live vendors, a sensory play area, costumed character meet & greets, blow up bouncy houses, food, and more, so there's a little something for everyone!

The Family Fun Day is naturally ALL AGES, and will be held outdoors, and while there's no admission fees, bring cash just in case, especially if you're not riding in the rally yourself. Individual music set times aren't listed, but the event itself will begin at 11:00 AM. This should be a fun event as usual for all ages, and there's some solid entertainment for hard rock and punk fans to enjoy as they support the Ride for Autism, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Redundant live!

Finally, here's a new live concert video from local doom metal trio AlgomA, courtesy of their set opening for Shit Liver during the punk rock bingo event at The New American Pub on December 23rd! This was only uploaded to the band's YouTube channel on Tuesday, with the delay possibly being due to editing together the multiple camera angles, one stationary from beside the stage, and two held by attendees in the crowd. The video features AlgomA playing their original song "Failed Stunt Fatality" (which isn't on any of their physical albums yet), and crushingly doing so, which you can check out below in this well edited clip, and visit their Facebook page for full details on their upcoming Ontario tour run, which will see them share the stage with familiar bands like The Golers, Archelon, and Striker later this month!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Redundant), Project 906 Concert Preview, And More!!

In what could possibly be our last news post of the month, we're tackling the last of our concert previews for this weekend, alongside some new cover videos, some assorted recent news and notes, and to lead things off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT! Here's what you need to know!

Local punk trio Redundant and hard rock solo singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will both return for this year's Family Fun Day at Runway Park on Saturday, June 11th, as part of the Algoma Autism Foundation's annual Algoma Ride For Autism motorcycle rally! Much like the annual Ride For Sight, this fourth-year event aims to raise funds and awareness for autism charities, with a large motorcycle rally planned again through town for the cause, so check the above links for details on how you can enter the Ride for Autism next month! This will be Redundant's third straight appearance at the Family Fun Day (and just their second announced concert of the year), while Tym Morrison will be making his second consecutive appearance at this event, and will no doubt follow it with his regular Gliss Steak & Seafood show that evening,. For reference, last year's event also featured hard rock quartet Late Shift, but as of this writing, no other music acts are announced for this year.

Also, look for vendors, a sensory area, costumed characters, blow-ups, food, and more for the whole family on June 11th, so keep all of that in mind! This ALL AGES outdoor family event at 573 Airport Road has no announced admission fees (but be prepared just in case, especially if you're not riding in the rally), and while individual set times aren't listed, the Family Fun Day begins at 11:00 AM. This should be a fun and worthwhile event for the whole family, so don't miss out on June 11th whether you're affected by autism or just want to support the cause, and visit the official Facebook event page for more details on this year's events!

Next up, here's our final preview for this weekend's hard rock concerts (barring a super-late notice announcement), as Sault Michigan blues/hard rock cover quartet Project 906 will return to The Strongs Tavern in nearby Eckerman TONIGHT! Returning there for the first time in over a month, this will be Project 906's first show since the Bay Mills Band Together fundraiser in Brimley earlier this month, and after a successful stretch of recent shows, hopefully the guys keep up the strong vibes tonight at The Strongs Tavern! As usual for them, a 9:00 PM start time is in effect tonight, you must be 21 or older to attend, and there's no announced cover charges in effect. Also today, here's the latest acoustic vocal/guitar cover videos from ex-Elipzis bassist Ryan Harrison's YouTube channel, as uploaded on Thursday! Two are covers of Seven Mary Three songs ("Water's Edge" & "Lucky"), but embedded below is his version of Pearl Jam's "Black". Featuring various film reel and grain effects added in post (and with only "Water's Edge" in colour), these are solid covers once again, with Ryan's vocals especially fitting Seven Mary Three, and I like that his setup is getting more professional too, complete with a microphone in frame! • Local doom metal trio AlgomA's recent vinyl split EP with Saskatchewan's Chronobot was reviewed by Rodrigo Bueno of the Portuguese doom metal website Funeral Wedding yesterday (it is in the Portuguese language, so have your translator ready!) Giving the disc a 4/5 rating, Rodrigo noted that the EP was full of "edgy stuff", particularly praising Chronobot's half, so give it a look at this link, then get your preferred online translator if needed!
• Former Sindicate/Creatures of the Night guitarist Nick Rhodes is looking for a bass player to jam with, perhaps to join a new metal band that he's launched. The band already has two guitarists (who share vocals) and a drummer, but the bassist could sing as well, and they hope to record original material down the road. If you're interested in jamming with Nick's new band, message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from Thursday!
• Local hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven have formally launched a public drummer search to find a replacement for the departed John Mignacca, as per frontman Cory Murchison's own Musicians Wanted group post on Wednesday. Cory noted that the band is finalizing their debut EP, and noted that they're working on covers of bands like Slipknot, Tool, and The Foo Fighters. There's already lots of visible interest, but if you want to trying out, message Cory at this link or bassist Alain Fletcher at this link!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Algoma Ride For Autism, Havadder, And Stereo North) & More Concert Previews!!

On this busy concert weekend, we're devoting a second post to weekend concert previews today, mostly concerning Saturday events, including a bunch of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! Just to note, if Mourning Wood have late notice shows to announce, we will touch on them as soon as possible, if possible, so keep an eye out. Now, here's what you should know!

Local classic/hard rock quartet Havadder will return to the stage TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT at The Rednecks Saloon! Apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via their Facebook event page yesterday, though personal Facebook posts hinted at them in prior days. These will be Havadder's first concerts since drummer Scott McLurg's recent heart attack, and while he's on the mend, the guys have enlisted Peace Vibe/Flat Stanley drummer Glen Thomas (who, like Scott, is also a Wishbone alum) to handle the skins for this weekend's shows, similarly to when he filled in for then-drummer T.J. Case at a few gigs last fall. Good fit, and nice of Glen to step in during Scott's recovery! Yes, we know of the upcoming fundraiser for Scott coming up later this month, that's coming in our next post. This weekend's Havadder shows are otherwise business as usual, with 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 19+ age limits.

As the saying goes, the show must go on, and hopefully Havadder and Glen have a solid weekend of classic hard rock action for fans at the former Nicolet Tavern this weekend (and get well soon, Scott!) See the above links for more details, and here's Havadder (with Glen, incidentally) last fall!



Next up, new local pop punk quartet Stereo North will play a unique event TOMORROW when they rock Mill Market at Mill Square during Habitat for Humanity's Great Dog House Build! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only confirmed their involvement in the event on their Facebook page on Wednesday. Making their first concert appearance since last month's River Jacks concert, Stereo North will reportedly be playing three sets from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM during this charity event, where teams will unveil doghouses that they built in recent weeks, which will be judged and auctioned off in the afternoon, with some proceeds going to help spay and neuter animals in the area. Nice cause, and Habitat For Humanity do great work on their own as well, so consider a trip downtown to see the completed doghouses and Stereo North as well! For the sake of clarity, the event is advertised as taking place at Mill Market, not The Machine Shop on the same site, but this does return Stereo North to the site of their live debut!

Not unlike Ride For Sight, this event features a motorcycle rally through town starting at 11:00 AM to raise awareness and funds for the Algoma Autism Foundation, and the Runway Park activities on Airport Road will include vendors, games, prizes, children's activities, and more, so be sure to check the above links for full details on what to expect and how to get involved in the rally itself, be you a rider, supporter, or both!

In terms of the bands, this will be Redundant's first concert appearance of 2015 and second straight at Algoma Ride For Autism (great to see them back!) and Late Shift's first shows that we've heard about since February (though remember, they don't have a known online page), while this adds to Tym Morrison's busy weekend, especially given that he's not at The Harp tomorrow night. Admission is FREE & ALL AGES tomorrow morning and afternoon, so check the above links for more details! Kudos to the artists for jumping on board this great cause, so hopefully a lot is raised for autism awareness and programs again tomorrow! Closing with a previously announced show taking place TOMORROW NIGHT, local all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats will play their farewell concert sets at The Rankin Arena during tomorrow's Border Brawl roller derby event! After a successful year-and-a-half run in the local scene, the girls will hit the stage for the last time before Kate Kougar's move out of town during halftime of tomorrow's roller derby games between Ontario and Michigan teams, with the first featuring the area's own Nord Starz. If you don't know the connection as to why The Danger Cats are playing at this sort of event, both Jamie Jaguar and Calico Katie are involved in Sault Roller Derby, so they're a solid fit on that basis! No word on if they have anything special planned for tomorrow, but their halftime sets are likely taking place at around 7:00 & 9:00 PM, given the scheduling of the two games at 6:00 & 8:00 PM. Roller derby is a fun and physical sport that is getting quite a following in the area, so give it a chance if you're up for some live entertainment tomorrow evening!
