The Din - "Technically Live" Album Review!!

It's now time for our 154th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, as we're taking a look at defunct local alternative/hard rock trio The Din's third live album "Technically Live"! Released on December 26th of last year (but only being looked at now due to our 6 month anti-bias buffer period since our last Din review), "Technically Live" is the much belated end result of their CD release party for their debut studio album "Give In To The Din", which took place on August 12th, 2016 at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech. Recorded live at the show by producer Daniel Schmidt of Pretoria Hill Productions, the tracks were remastered by frontman Mike Haggith for this posthumous release five+ years later. Mike is on vocals & bass here alongside guitarist Tammy Hill (ex-Steeletown Girls/Leaked) and drummer/backing vocalist Brandan Glew (ex-Revolution/Re:Born), who all also featured on the studio album itself.

"Technically Live" is on sale for $10 on CD at this link, while you can buy digital copies of it on a "name your price" model on their Bandcamp page, and/or stream it for free there, but consider buying it to support The Din's work, if belatedly! Now, similarly to our review of The Din's prior CD release party live album "Suburban Sendoff", I will not be re-reviewing the original songs here, as I have already done so in prior Din studio album reviews (not to mention what was carried over from Mike's prior projects), but I will compare them as live cuts and to The Din's studio versions. Also, I was in attendance for this show back in 2016, you can read my review of both The Din's & openers Gnaeus' sets at this link. Be advised that Mike did chop out a lot of the between song banter (and an original song outright), but you can hear much of that via Shaw TV's footage of their set.

With 15 songs running for about 58 minutes in length, let's kick this review off with both it's & the concert's opening spoken word track "Leamington, Ontario"! This did not make the cut for "Give In To The Din", but was previously released on their 2016 live acoustic album "The Din Does Laundry". The album-low 97 seconds long piece is the traditional lead-in to the next song, which definitely comes across deeply in the live element with Mike self-deprecating the band's setup. The extra oomph and passion in Mike's dialogue is welcomed, but I've never thought this stood on its own as its own track and should ideally be included as part of the song proper, "75", which was track #5 on the album, so they definitely did not play it in release order. Live, the song is faithful to the studio version aside from the intro being absorbed by "Leamington, Ontario", Brandan's more prominent backing vocals, and the usual concert asides and variances.

"75" remains a solid hard rocker as in its prior studio appearances, and it was a wise choice to lead off with! Next up that night was "Alleyways & Apartments", which is again played pretty faithfully, but the live spontaneity does lead to a livelier and faster rendition that I think suits it! The song proper is a mid-tempo alt-rocker with good melodies, so it's good to see that they're not already tinkering with the then-new songs! Mike does leave in credit to recording the song with Dustin Jones afterwards. Track #4 is the title track of "Give In To The Din", namely "In Search Of The Perfect Moment", and I honestly prefer the live take because I always found Mike's vocal register drop in the chorus suited the song better than in studio, where he sung at the higher register for all of it. The song is otherwise accurate to the studio version, but rougher around the edges as you might expect.

Had this led off the show instead, it also would have worked fine with it's up-tempo energy and forward momentum, and everyone performs well on it! The first of four covers (excepting former Haggith band/Mike solo holdovers) is next, specifically a rendition of The Foo Fighters' classic song "Learn To Fly". Fun to hear The Din's rendition again, but Mike does overdo with the chorus vocals a bit with that echo he does, and I do think the song would benefit from having two guitarists (Tammy's solid as ever but a rhythm track would help). Lively and familiar all the same, and Brandan gets some room to let loose! We return to the studio album tracks next with "Out Of My League", which is again, played very similarly to what you heard on "Give In To The Din", but looser and rawer given the live setting. Not a whole lot new to add, it's an entertaining melodic sing-along track that translates well live, as you might recall from their pre-pandemic gigs!

Next is "Remember", which was the acoustic ballad of sorts for "Give In To The Din", and while it is played similarly on "Technically Live", it has a fuller sound with more instrumental heft, and also includes an extended call-and-response section where Mike encourages fans to sing along with the "set me free" part near the end. I think the campfire vibes of "Remember" worked better in studio, as the expanded fuller version doesn't feel as cohesive, but your mileage may vary. After linking it to The Din's former "Cover of the Month" video series, we next get another outside cover, this time of The Barenaked Ladies' "The Old Apartment", which you may have previously heard in unplugged format on the physical run of "The Din Does Laundry". The Din always had this song down cold in concert, and while not as heavy, Mike's deep vocals and their ear for melodies keep it going!

I won't spend a lot of time on this, but the very next song at the CD release concert was not included on "Technically Live", namely "Of Cars & Criminals", despite previously appearing on Mike's then-newest solo record "The Warinside" and unplugged on "The Din Does Laundry". You can see/hear "Of Cars & Criminals" from that night via Shaw TV's OnStage episode at this link. No point reviewing it when it wasn't on the live album proper, but I don't hear any grievous errors to explain it being cut, so it may just have been a casualty of not being a studio track on any release of "Give In To The Din" & summarily being out of place in hindsight.

As you could see from Shaw TV's footage, "Of Cars & Criminals" bled right into the next song that did make the cut, namely "Flux". The live rendition is played a little faster and does sound a fair amount rougher than in studio, partly because Mike & Brandan's harmony vocals don't mesh the same, but the drum solo bridge is actually better live to me. This song remains a fun & melodic number in any event, and fans were receptive at The Tech! Next is another Foo Fighters cover, this time of "Times Like These", which also previously appeared in unplugged form on the physical release of "The Din Does Laundry". This version is immediately better than how they played it at The Gore Street Cafe, as Mike's singing the song at a normal register, unlike the deeper, slower way he handled it for that show/CD. The freewheeling nature helps make this a fun diversion, but again, rhythm guitar would help add to the melody and layering of this cover.

Another original is next, namely the fan favourite "Potato (Should've Known Better)", which is about identical to the studio version in arrangement and pacing. The big difference is the lack of effects on Mike's vocals for the chorus, and the rawer, straightforward vocals there are actually an improvement to me. Strong up-tempo hard rock number that fans of The Din and Mike's heavier local-era solo work should easily take to live or in studio! The final outside cover played at the release party is next, namely The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends", which also appeared on the physical copies of "The Din Does Laundry". In fact, both of those live albums have the same outside covers, save for City & Colour's "Fragile Bird" instead of "Learn To Fly" on the acoustic one. This Beatles rendition sticks to melodic formula but is more raucous and has more rock-befitting mannerisms and banter throughout.

Again, I don't find that the vocal harmonies are 100% spot on, but this is a fun cover all the same, and takes less liberties than the acoustic version did! Originals comprise the three remaining slots of this album/setlist, starting with "The Rose", a true deep cut that was rarely played live by The Din afterwards. This rendition is rawer and harder-edged, so I do prefer it for energy's sake to the studio version, while the ending is abbreviated. Not my favourite song on "Give In...", but well written! Despite appearances, the abrupt ending is because it led straight into the penultimate song and final from the original studio album release, "A Drive Through The Peninsula", which is an album-long 8+ minutes on both CDs! This meandering song is the biggest surviving remnant of The Din's early-mid 2010s run as an acid jam collective, which works extra well live.

The core song is about the same aside from Mike singing the chorus in a more upbeat way at times, but you do get a false song ending early and a different flavour to the extended instrumental jam in the back half, which gives Tammy lots of room to shine in particular! The last 30 seconds of the track is applause and calls for an encore, leading to the live album & setlist's closer, "Differences", which was not on "Give In..." initially but a demo recording of it came out on last year's "Deluxe Edition". The then-new song had nothing to compare to at the time, but against the studio demo, this is much faster and heavier, almost punk-esque in how its approached! In my review of the deluxe edition, I conceded that maybe dropping "Differences" from "Give In..." was a good idea, but not if they'd recorded it in the same aggressive way that they played it here!

Band shoutouts and plugs break it up in between, so you can't cleanly substitute one for the other, but the much more raucous pacing and fuller live audio quality definitely end the show and live album on a high note, and if you wanted more out of "Differences", here you go!

So, what are my final thoughts on "Technically Live"? I'd say that it's an entertaining release that captures The Din at their local height, and the work Mike did to fix up the recordings for public consumption was worth the time and effort! While there was more editing done compared to their other electric live album "Suburban Sendoff, the final product does feel more like an album intended for retail, so you take the bad with the good. Given that this was a release party for a studio album, you would expect The Din to faithfully play each song, and they did just that with only minor variances for the most part. Mike's vocal & bass work, Tammy's lead guitar shreddery (is that a word?), and Brandan's drumming were all on point, and where there were big changes, they were usually to the song's benefit!

What would I have fixed? Well, Mike & Brandan's vocal harmonies often didn't jive that well, I'd still cram "Leamington, Ontario" & "75" together, I did miss "Of Cars & Criminals", and some of the live performances were a little rough compared to the studio copies, but in the latter case, that comes with the territory, and spontaneity and unpredictability arw something The Din always handled nicely in concert! This is well worth your time for fans of The Din & Mike's extensive solo catalog, so buy or stream "Technically Live" above, and I hope you guys liked this month's CD review! Scarkazm Concert Previews, Tarnished Updates, And More News & Notes!!

Here's a new news post for your Thursday night reading, and it includes some assorted topics from recent days, a new video, the latest from a prominent local band, and unless something super short notice turns up in the next couple of days, previews of the only hard rock concerts announced for this weekend in the Twin Saults. For what it's worth, we'll be previewing Tuesday's Buckcherry concert on the site on Sunday or Monday, it's a little early yet to do it today. Now, here's what you should know!

We'll start today with a pair of concert previews for Sault Michigan, as Traverse City metal trio Scarkazm will make their long awaited return to the E.U.P. with concerts at The Rapids Lounge at the local Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! These will be Adam, Dave, and Jeff's first concerts in our neck of the woods since February 2020 for extremely obvious reasons, and it's great to see Scarkazm's hard hitting blend of covers and originals back at a Kewadin venue after 20 long months, so if you've missed them in the pandemic era, here you go! If you can't come this weekend, they will be back at The Rapids Lounge on New Year's Eve. As usual, these are 9:00 PM concerts with 21+ age limits and no cover charges, but please honour and respect any public health and social distancing guidelines at the lounge and/or casino. Next up, here's the latest from local hard rock band Tarnished, who have yet to reveal the identity of their apparent new bassist on social media, but they haven't been idle as of late! Following their short notice concert in Gould City (outside of our coverage range) on September 25th, the guys hit the road for Grand Rapids this past Saturday for a headlining concert alongside opening acts from that area with quite the imagery, if the poster on the Facebook event page is any indication! Hopefully the concert was a success and that they made some new fans in the Lower Peninsula! As well as sharing a previously posted 2019 concert video of them covering Van Halen's "Eruption", Tarnished's other recent post was to acknowledge that their music video for "Metalyn" won the fan vote for Best Student Music Video at the Soo Film Festival last month. Congratulations to Jay and Tarnished for sure, and stay tuned for more from their camp!

Also, let's head north to Sault Ontario for a brief new video from local party metal band The Apocalypse Afterparty's Facebook AND TikTok page! Yes, they're now on the latter service, but on TikTok, they also post some personal content not related to the band, and anything musical has been double-posted to Facebook anyway (both Paul and Amanda appear to have admin controls on there). On September 24th, The A.A. shared a video of them jamming a Lorde cover as only they can, with just the Stanghettas visibly performing, but Paul drops in an impromptu "simple dimple" dance, parodying a recent viral challenge on TikTok. Myself, I don't get it, but I'm also not on TikTok to know what trends there. Still a silly and light-hearted moment in between a solid rendition, so give it a watch below, and remember their private gig at Mellow D's Underground next week, more info forthcoming!

• Local author George Case (arguably best known for his books about Led Zeppelin) has released a new book called "Takin' Care of Business: A History of Working People's Rock 'n' Roll", which explores the influence of rock music on the working class as it relates to populism and the evolution of political affiliation trends. I don't get into politics on the site unless explicitly related to local concerts/original songs, so I hesitate to elaborate on this line of discussion, but it's an interesting topic of debate! • After being closed for almost three years, The Tech has re-opened under new ownership! The former Lakeway Collegiate/St. Mary's College building had been repurposed as a multi-purpose events center in the fall of 2015, but it quietly closed in February 2019. A handful of concerts (like the annual mental health fundraiser The Sky's The Limit & The Din's debut CD release party) were held at The W.W. Baldwin Auditiorium on-site, and given that former local concert promoter/musician Jeremy Hannah is involved in The Tech's revival, could more shows happen there in time? Stay tuned for updates, and learn more at their new Facebook page!
• I have deleted late 2000s Sault Michigan acoustic hard rock band (and Shift side project) Wild Fate from our inactive band links, as their page was hit by the slow decay of publically viewable photos on their MySpace (and only surviving online) page. I have found that MySpace pages have been liable to lose pictures as time progresses, further eroding anything that made MySpace worthwhile, but it is what it is. Hopefully Joey and Amy are doing well nowadays!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Parabol & The Elements), The Studio 10 Fire, And Much More!!

Here's a new news post for your Saturday afternoon reading, so what can you find here? A bunch of assorted updates, some overdue coverage on a devastating news event from earlier this week, and leading off, some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for next month. Here's what you should know!

Local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements will reprise their role as backing musicians for another round of live band karaoke at The Rockstar Bar on Saturday, March 16th as part of their St. Patrick's Day weekend festivities! An encore for this style of event that debuted last month, The Elements proper will rock out with karaoke singers (and Rob presumably when none are ready) on this night, though it'll be a special abbreviated gig, as they will immediately follow a triple header of out of town stand-up comedians, the first such booking from Six, Two, Oh.. It'll be interesting to see how that event does, so click here for full details on the performers and admission info therein! As such, The Elements' set proper will have a late start time of 12:00 AM, technically placing it at the beginning of St. Patrick's Day itself, so what better way to ring in the holiday? Yes, The Rockstar Bar will have green beer.

A presentation of (Choose) Maxx Entertainment, this concert is definitely 19+, and while the stand-up comedy show has a $5 cover charge, I don't think that would apply if you just came at midnight to see The Elements and/or sing karaoke with them. Looks like a fun night of diverse entertainment next month to get in touch with the Irish spirit with, and The Elements should deliver some hard rocking tunes, with or without karaoke singers! Next up, The Elements aren't done for shows at The Rockstar Bar next month, as they'll reprise their Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band alter ego on Saturday, March 23rd when they open for new local Tool tribute band Parabol once again! Basically a direct encore to the two bands' joint tribute concert at the same venue in December, this will be Parabol's third public concert appearance, their first of 2019, and first since confirming their permanent name. With this local supergroup's faithful sounding and technically proficient tribute to Tool winning them many fans last year, how will they perform for concert #3 next month? Of course, The Elements are no strangers to The Chili Peppers, but on March 23rd, they'll take on a temporary tribute band moniker, performing under the name Scar Tissue. Fitting name, but given Jesse Cook's involvement, I'm surprised they don't just recycle the name of his 2007-2008 Chili Peppers tribute band Sikamikanico.

Another presentation of Maxx Entertainment, this concert has a $5 cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and a 9:00 PM start time. This should be a fun night of familiar tunes from two proficient and chemistry-filled tribute acts, so visit the official Facebook event page for more on Parabol and "Scar Tissue" returning to The Rockstar Bar next month!

Also today, I thought I should give some overdue thoughts on a recent major news event, namely the severe fire at The Dime Nightclub (better previously known as Studio 10) this past Sunday and Monday. As well documented in local news media, the 89 Hudson Street venue and it's on-site apartment buildings were destroyed by the fire, which police are not treating as suspicious, and the fire unfortunately took the life of a 60 year old tenant (our best thoughts and wishes are with his family and friends.) The remnants of the building have since been torn down, and you can read more on the fire proper and response on relevant news websites. Though primarily known in recent years for it's exotic adult entertainment, SMS readers will recall Studio 10 as the host of a handful of Havadder concerts from 2014-2016, while it was a far more active concert venue in the 1970s and 1980s, playing host to numerous bands back when it was known as The New Ontario Hotel.

As it wasn't a regular concert venue for most of my adulthood, I can't remark first hand on Studio 10/The Dime, but it's unfortunate to lose a familiar downtown venue that provided entertainment, employment, and a home for many locals. Visit local news websites for much more on the fire and response, and our best goes out to every employee, tenant, and customer affected by this devastating event.

• Algoma Ride For Autism is looking for bands to play during this year's charity motorcycle rally on Friday, June 14th. No word on location or timing, but for reference, local punk trio Redundant were among performers at last year's official afterparty at The Verdi Hall, while prior years featured live bands before the rally. If you're interested in playing this year, contact organizers at this link, and stay tuned for updates as they roll in!
• Local arts & culture Facebook page SooSpin is looking for local albums on CD or vinyl for an unspecified project. I have no insider knowledge on what they're doing, but if you're interested in donating or loaning any local albums, contact SooSpin at this link!
• A SaultOnline article by Megan Pounder from Sunday speculates that The Tech may have closed for good, based on inspection notices being posted on the front door, businesses moving out, and calls to building owners going unanswered. SMS readers will best know the former Lakeway/St. Mary's building and it's W.W. Baldwin Auditorium as an occasional concert venue for events like The Sky's The Limit, The Soo's Got Talent, and The Din's CD release party. A positive picture wasn't painted by SaultOnline, but hopefully things get resolved for all parties, and that 130 Wellington Street East finds a permanent use again down the road!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & Tym Morrison), Plus Soo's Got Talent Videos!!

With an unusually quiet concert weekend giving us no announced hard rock shows this weekend (unless something on supremely short notice comes up), we'll press on with a new news post today, including more videos from an ongoing competition, and some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS on each side of the border! Here's what you should know!

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Runway Bar in Hessel for their Halloween party on October 26th (a.k.a. next Friday!) Note that Banned have not confirmed this show publically at press time, but The Runway Bar confirmed the event on their Facebook page this morning. This fan favourite band has been laying low since the E.U.P. Kewadin Casinos went "in a different direction" last month, with singer/guitarist Alex Traynor working on his burgeoning solo project and debut album in the interim (plus, ironically enough, a St. Ignace Kewadin solo gig.) Banned regularly play somewhere over the Halloween weekend, and they'll head to Hessel this year for their first gig there since February, so look for more hard rocking covers from Alex, Don, and Wayne next week! No word on seasonal frills and/or drink specials for the occasion, but I'd have to assume costumes are welcome. This should be a 10:00 PM event with a 21+ age limit and no cover charge. Next up, Sault Ontario hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison announced a couple of new gigs via Facebook event pages yesterday, but unfortunately, neither are for this weekend. One is a stag & doe next week, and if you've followed the SMS for years, you'll know that we traditionally don't cover stag & doe-hosted concerts on here due to that kind of event's personal nature, lest strangers show up just to see the band. However, the other show is fully public, as Tym will return to the relaunched Harp Pub & Grill for one night only on Friday, November 2nd! While this is another big event as "live music begins" at The Harp, Tym is no stranger to the venue, as he played there frequently from their fall 2013 re-opening through March 2016, including on a Gliss-esque weekly arrangement for a time. It's great to see Tym back at the former Madison's Pub, so don't miss out early next month for more unplugged hard rock classics! A 9:00 PM start time is in effect for this 19+ gig, with no announced cover charge.

Visit the official Facebook event page for details on Tym's Harp return, and as for the resumption of his weekly Gliss Steak & Seafood run, Tym has hinted on his personal Facebook page that he'll be back playing there regularly next week, but I'm taking that with a grain of salt for now, given that Gliss have not formally signalled their re-opening date yet. We'll let you know when things resume for Tym's weekly arrangement at Gliss' new Spring Street home when things are firmly public!

Also, here's some more relevant video content from the ongoing Soo's Got Talent competition at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech, as there is a qualifying round video on the event's Facebook page featuring the aforementioned Tym Morrison! Apologies for the belated write-up on this video (well after Tym's elimination), but we didn't get widespread word on The Soo's Got Talent until the second round lead-up. I watched all of The Soo's Got Talent first round qualifier videos (available at this link), and only two have an overt link to our covered genres. One starts with then-Re:Born singer Robert Nevitt & guitarist Rick Atkins covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" in their qualifying round performance from August (they were eliminated in the first round), though no word if they and the absent Randy Russon have a band in the works. Not a bad rendition of this southern rock classic! The other video is embedded below, and features 11 advancing acts from the qualifying round, so who and what can you see in this lengthy upload?

These performers are singers unless otherwise credited, with song covered in brackets where available. In performance order, you'll see Michaela Lynn ("A Million Dreams" from The Greatest Showman), Allie Bouchard (Sam Smith's "Stay With Me"), Daniella Brewer (Elle King's "Ex's & Oh's"), magician Darren Emond, juggler Kyle Hicks, pianist R.J. Renner (The Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris", I believe), Lori Bouchard (Patsy Cline's "Leavin' On Your Mind), Tym Morrison playing a newer original song, Bethany Pelletier (Rachel Platten's "Fight Song", same as round 1), The St. Mary's College Singers (Cyndi Lauper's "True Colours"), and Hope Connor (Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".)  For reference sake, Michaela, Daniella, Darren, and Bethany are all still in the competition and will be competing tomorrow at The Tech as part of the third round, while Kyle, Tym, and Hope were eliminated after last week's second round.

Lots of talent to find here, especially if you're a fan of modern top 40 music, and Tym's performance is solid as well, so this video is worth a watch to see what you missed during the private auditions last month and/or the first round competition! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Soo's Got Talent), Plus New Videos!!

Hey everyone, I apologize for this post being later than you may expect, but this weekend is very quiet for hard rock concerts, and I was giving more time for short notice announcements. Well, we found one, and it's a big one, so before we touch on some long-delayed videos, let's kick off this post with some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, starting with one on SHORT NOTICE!

Local hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison will play TONIGHT at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech as part of the second round of The Soo's Got Talent! Profuse apologies for the short notice, we only heard about this event via Tym's personal Facebook page yesterday, and while the talent contest's Facebook page announced TONIGHT'S performers on October 1st, this event completely flew under our radar, as only Tym is an already known hard rock artist of the remaining competitors. This is not a battle of the bands, but musicians make up most of the performer lineup, and TONIGHT'S 15 acts were determined via a 28 act opening round on September 28th (Tym was there, apologies again), by way of private auditions at The Tech held weekly from August 24th through September 21st. A $450 cash prize awaits the winner, while gift cards and certificates from local merchants will also be up for grabs, so who all will you find TONIGHT?

Luckily, we can see all 15 second round competitors via the night #1 video embedded below, as uploaded to The Soo's Got Talent's Facebook page, and keep in mind that this event was definitely promoted towards karaoke singers, so that may explain why some names aren't as well known. There's definitely a lot of diverse local talent here, but only five acts will be advanced to next week's competition, so come out TONIGHT to see who makes the cut! This event (a Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser) is co-organized by ex-Coverfly frontman Mario Naccarato and local theatre director Barbara Rajnovich, with Mario serving as judge alongside Rae-Ann Brunette, Darren Robertson and Leslie Walsh Tibben. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 7 and up plus students, and FREE for kids 6 and under, while everything begins at 6:00 PM. I apologize again for this only making the site now, but I will go through videos from the auditions and first round to see if we missed any videos of Tym or an eliminated hard rock performance, and hopefully TONIGHT'S second round action is a big hit going into next week's semifinal!

We'll close this post with videos from Saturday night's Pirie "Bear" Kaufman benefit concert at The Sault Theatre Workshop, as headlining power rock quintet Re:Born shared eight videos from the event to their Facebook page on Sunday! Three are of other performers, including most of prog rockers Machines Dream playing their song "The Cannons Cry", folk artist M.D. Dunn playing his song "Master of Doubt", and ex-Blackberries frontman Norm Rosteck and friends playing an unidentified song (possibly an original named "Gonna Drive Me"?) Unfortunately, no videos were uploaded of Tym Morrison or The Cheesemakers' sets, but we do have 5 of Re:Born in action! They were filmed covering Kissin' Dynamite's "Sex Is War" and Edguy's "Lavatory Love Machine" (with Elly McWatters returning as guest singer), plus the Project 421 holdovers "Into The Darkness" & "Running Away", but embedded below is seemingly a new original named "Die Another Day"!

Not to be confused with the Madonna song or it's namesake James Bond movie, this sounds pretty solid, as do the other videos from Saturday night, but the audio can have it's muffled moments. Cory (I assume) got good angles of the bands in action, and hopefully this show was a huge hit for the Kaufman family as Pirie continues his cancer battle. Our best goes out to him, of course, and give Re:Born and company's videos a look!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison) & Most Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

After a quiet week on the SMS, things will pick up over the next couple of days, starting with this weekend's concert previews! Well, most of them, as due to the length of this post, I have opted to push our preview of Saturday night's Fluid 5ive show to tomorrow's post. Don't worry, it is coming! Now, here's what you should know to start the weekend, including a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!

Joining his regular weekly concerts at Gliss Steak & Seafood TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will also play a nighttime solo concert at Room 21 TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice on that show, it was only confirmed via it's official Facebook event page on Tuesday. TOMORROW'S gig above Low & Slow will be Tym's first concert at this venue since Friday the 13th last month, and with no Jason costume to worry about, fans can enjoy his acoustic cover action unfettered this weekend there and at Gliss, with his ongoing matinee run continuing that same evening and on Saturday too, so don't miss out at either venue! You can take in Tym's prolific live show tomorrow and Saturday at Gliss at 6:00 PM with no cover charges or age limits (but mind the locale), while TOMORROW NIGHT'S Room 21 return has an oddly specific 10:15 PM start time, no cover, and a 19+ age limit. Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts, starting with the third annual Sky's The Limit fundraiser concert, taking place TONIGHT at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech! After two successful prior installments were held at the former St. Mary's College, Algoma Family Services have brought back this mental health awareness concert as part of Children's Mental Health Week once again, with young local musicians (aged 14-29) returning for another entertaining evening of live music for the cause! Local blues/hard rock trio Electric Church will serve as tonight's headlining performers after backing up The Pixo Control & The Din in the last two years, and they're a fitting choice to get the closing nod in year #3 (let alone in their first announced show of the year!) Co-headlining is Christian rapper Tristan "Bold Noize" Goslow, another returnee from the prior Sky's the Limit concerts, who should deliver a solid set of upbeat rhymes himself tonight!

Unlike in prior years, the full performer lineup has actually been announced online, as per this Sault Online article, so who else is playing? In listed order, the other acts are Collage (an all-female band from Notre Dame du Sault that also played last year), a duo act from local musicians Dalton Povey & Chris Elgie, Lime (a high school band comprised of Mustang Sally alumni from Korah Collegiate), and singer/songwriter Tianna Legacy, herself returning from last year. Genres aren't given for the acts in question, but each one is described or quoted regarding their positive messages and intentions, so hopefully they leave an impact (musical or otherwise) tonight! The show will take place at The Tech at 7:00 PM, this is absolutely an ALL AGES event, and tickets are $5 each or $20 if you have a family of five+. With all proceeds going to mental health and wellness programs at Algoma Family Services, this is definitely a worthwhile fundraiser and cause to support, so definitely consider a trip down to The Tech for all of the music on display tonight! Finally for today's concert preview post, we'll head south to the Eastern Upper Peninsula, where Traverse City, Michigan metal trio Scarkazm will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Just two weeks removed from their most recent Sault Ste. Marie gigs at their Kewadin branch, these will be the Peril sister band's first shows in St. Ignace in four months. This fan favourite group should have another hard hitting weekend of covers and originals in store for northern fans, so if you're up for some heavy rock action, take a jaunt down to St. Ignace tomorrow and/or Saturday night! They won't be back there until August, after all. As usual for Scarkazm's (and Peril's) Kewadin Casino weekends, expect 21+ age limits over these two nights, there are no announced cover charges, and start times remain at 9:00 PM. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Seether, Don't Look Back, And The Sky's The Limit!!)

Finally, we have some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS to tackle on this Wednesday morning, and there's some big ones to touch on from the last few days, so here's what you should know for these three concerts!

In the first of two new hard rock show announcements for The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino, classic rock diehards will want to note the local debut of Arizona-based Boston tribute band Don't Look Back, as they'll hit the Soo Kewadin on Saturday, April 7th! Of course, local fans saw the real hard/progressive rock legends here in 2008, but this looks like the next best thing for fans of their classic hits like "More Than A Feeling", "Smokin'", and "Foreplay/Long Time", with Don't Look Back self-describing themselves as "an incredible re-creation" of Boston as they were in the 1970s. From what I've seen, they have the sound and the look down pretty well, so definitely keep Don't Look Back in mind for the Boston experience next weekend! Tickets are a very affordable $12.50, and there are plenty of seats available for this tribute show, so head to this link, the in person box office, or 1-800-KEWADIN to get hooked up. Don't look back on Don't Look Back, and stay tuned for updates!

Next up, the third annual Sky's The Limit mental health fundraiser/awareness concert will take place on Thursday, May 10th at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech in Sault Ontario! Though curiously not advertised online yet, physical posters are floating around (I photographed this one at a Food Basics bulletin board), and there, it's confirmed that local blues/hard rock trio Electric Church will perform as this year's pre-determined headliners! After playing the first two installments via the performer auditions, now they'll be the featured attraction in their first announced show of 2018, so keep them in mind for later this spring! Christian rapper Tristan "Bold Noize" Goslow will also return for his own third year as an announced performer, so keep an eye out for his rhymes as well in May! As was the case in 2016 & last year, the night's remaining performers will be chosen following a private audition at The Tech on Thursday, April 19th at 6:00 PM, so for more details on the audition in person or via e-mail (if you live outside of town), visit this link for the official contact phone number and e-mail address!

Presented by Algoma Family Services as part of Children's Mental Health Week once again, The Sky's The Limit III has a 7:00 PM start time, it is ALL AGES, and tickets are $5 for individual attendees or $20 for families, so keep that in mind if you have a party of five+. I'm surprised that the online press isn't as big yet for this year, but this event has always been held for a great cause, and hopefully there's another solid turnout for the music and the mental health awareness alike in May! At last, here's the big one, as South African hard rock/post-grunge trio Seether will return to the Sault Ste. Marie area for a headlining concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on Saturday, August 11th! A extremely familiar band to Rock 101 listeners thanks to hit singles like "Broken", "Fake It", and "Betray & Degrade" (among many others), this will be Seether's first local appearance in over a decade, following January 2008's Three Days Grace concert in Sault Ontario. It's awesome to have Seether back in our neck of the woods at last, and they've only gotten bigger since the last time, so look for more hard rocking fan favourites at this already highly anticipated concert this summer! Knoxville, Tennessee hard rock quintet 10 Years will also join Seether for this concert, in their own first Sault Michigan appearance since opening for Sevendust here in October 2010. Though still best known for their chart topping song "Wasteland", they've recently had success with their single "Novacaine", and it'll be great to have them back in the Soo in a few months' time as well!

A third band is to be announced, no idea on if they'll be local or another touring act. Presented by Allstar Promotions in their second Dreammaker's Theater show of 2018, this stop on Seether's Poison the Parish World Tour will take place at 7:00 PM on August 11th, while this is an ALL AGES event, and tickets go on sale THIS FRIDAY at 10:00 AM at this link, at the in person box office, and/or at 1-800-KEWADIN. The cost is $46, which is high as Allstar events go, but keep in mind how big Seether in particular are, and expectations are that this show will sell out quick, so get your tickets A.S.A.P.! No word yet though on potential VIP ticket prices or a possible meet & greet session. This should be a huge concert for the summer season, and it's been a long time coming for both Seether and 10 Years to return to the Soo, so check the above links for more details in advance of Friday's on-sale date! Also, a trailer video for this show was posted to the promoters' Facebook page on Monday, so what should you know on it?

Clearly dragging out the reveals for dramatic effect, the trailer features clips from Seether's music videos for "Remedy" & "Rise Above This", as well as both of 10 Years' biggest hits, along with imagery of the poster, and a radio dial rapidly shifting about. Effective promotion, so give it a look below, and remember, tickets go on sale FRIDAY MORNING!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Id Iota & Tym Morrison), Oh!No Concert Festival Updates, And More!!

Here's another new news post to check out on this Tuesday afternoon, so what's on tap? Some shorter assorted stories from recent days, a video remembering and hyping up past and future installments of a concert festival, and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the spring, but we'll start with one on SHORT NOTICE and a related apology!

Former Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will return to Mark's Breakfast Plus for a special matinee concert TONIGHT, after previously playing there yesterday! Profuse apologies for the short notice (and for missing last night's concert), Tym only announced them via his personal Facebook page yesterday at supper time, with a Facebook event page that listed the shows as being on February 12th and 13th being taken down after the fact. These will "mark" Tym's first shows at the Market Mall restaurant since the end of February, and if you're up for some skilled (if late notice) acoustic hard rock classics, be at Marks TONIGHT! While we're in the business, Tym will also bring his acoustic solo act to The Tech on Saturday, April 7th for an afternoon set during the first annual Twin City Tattoo Convention, which will definitely be a unique showcase for his material! Tym will be playing before acoustic country duo The Bearded Lounge and blues veterans The Swamp Cats that day.

TONIGHT'S (and yesterday's) Mark's shows are 6:00 PM matinees with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, while the Twin City Tattoo Convention may or may not have age limits and cover charges, so check the above links for full details therein. Time-wise, he's on at 12:30 PM, with The Stray Cats at 3:00 PM and The Bearded Lounge headlining at 6:00 PM. Whether you want some imminent supper-time music or want to rock out amongst local inked brethren, Tym's staying busy! Don't miss out, here's Tym live, and apologies again for missing last night's Mark's gig! We'd have plugged it here had it received advance notice!



Next up, here's a couple of new shows regarding local alternative hard/indie rock quartet Id Iota, who will make their long awaited return to the local stage for the first time since May at three upcoming shows this spring! To start, the guys will join drone rock trio Pointless for a joint concert at LopLops Lounge on Friday, March 30th, in what will be the Soo debut of Id Iota's still-unrevealed new bassist, as well as an early live appearance for Pointless with Id Iota's own Dustin Goodall on bass in place of the relocated Jordan Leach. Nice to see both bands back on stage, and this should be an interesting style contrast at LopLops at month's end! If you can't be at that show, both bands will also join forces at the same venue on Saturday, May 19th when they open for Sudbury garage rock trio The Almighty Rhombus, whose contemporary and lively sound is well suited to the venue, and they should attract an audience along with the locals in May as well!

For the former, a $5 cover charge, 19+ age limit, and 9:00 PM start time are in effect, and while online advertising for the latter has not commenced, I imagine all three will translate to that show except for maybe a higher cover. Id Iota have been busy in studio since last year working on their first full length album, and have teased that we may see it this year finally, but look for originals from it and some surprise covers at these two shows, and remember, Pointless are fronted by Bill Priddle of Treble Charger fame! Next up, here's a retrospective video from/teaser for the Oh!No Music Festival in nearby Leeburn, Ontario, courtesy of co-promoter/AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent's YouTube channel yesterday! The 2 minute clip features high quality footage from the Robbie's Church-held festival from Six, Two, Oh., as set to "The Sweat of a Hero" by Sudbury punk trio Lightmares (who were on last year's bill), though to my knowledge, the full footage from the cameras used here, let alone with original audio, isn't publically viewable yet. In this video, you'll see performance footage of every single band or solo act that played last year (even DJ Seith), and it's well edited, letting us see everything without giving much away! The video's end implies that the Oh!No Festival will return to Leeburn on Friday, September 8th, and while I don't think the logo at the end is anything more than a new Oh!No logo, there are more questions. Who's playing this year? Will it be at the church again? Will the ground rules change? Keep tabs for more details, and look back on last year below!



Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by venue or artist name:

• In a post on their Facebook page yesterday, The Canadian Nightclub indicated that they were looking for bands to play at the venue and upstairs at The Upper Deck Lounge (adding "WE PAY! YOU PLAY!"), as well as a mention that they are "looking at hosting a battle of the bands in the near future" with "great prizes". It'd be great to see a new battle there, not to mention more bands playing regularly at this fan favourite venue, so see above to inquire on how to play at The Canadian in either setting!
• Local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades and sister punk trio Stegadeth will both be heading out to Meyersburg for this year's Spiderfest on Saturday, July 14th! Both bands will be playing on night 2 of the annual punk/extreme metal festival, where they'll open for such past local performers as The Ripcordz, Random Killing, and The Union Thugs. Jack Spades have spoken very highly of the Spiderfest experience in the past, and here's hoping both bands deliver a knockout blow again this summer!
• Former That's Chester drummer Ric Datson (now of Bone Yard & Mojo fame) is featured in the cover story of the new issue of The Soo Profile Magazine, featuring interview remarks from him and an outline of his musical, professional, and charitable endeavours. Very entertaining interview that paints a quality picture of Ric in varying facets, and it's well worth a read at the above links and/or at participating local merchants!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Din), Electric Church/Speaker Concert Preview, And New Sky's The Limit Videos!!

Before we begin this post, I wanted to apologize for a missed concert on here, as Toronto-area Bon Jovi tribute band Keep The Faith (who came to Sault Ontario twice in 2010) played a pair of extended sets at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in nearby Brimley, Michigan last Friday. No word on if it was at the Back Bay Grille or not, but this definitely fell outside of what we've researched in recent months. Profuse apologies for missing it for coverage here, hopefully it was a great show! Now, let's tackle a few more weekend concert previews (one on SHORT NOTICE) and some new videos!

It is now 100% official: Local alternative hard rock favourites The Din are indeed playing an acoustic show TOMORROW NIGHT at LopLops Lounge! Apologies for the short notice, we were waiting for public confirmation from The Din on if this event was still on, as it was unlike them to not acknowledge the show despite LopLops' website listing it, but there is now a Facebook event page for it. Not long after their Family Market on the Greens set as an unplugged two-piece, frontman Mike Haggith and guitarist Tammy Hill will reprise their more reserved unplugged sound TOMORROW, presumably due to drummer Brandan Glew's non-availability, as they've played at LopLops plugged in and with Brandan acoustically each in the past. Mike & Tammy should have a solid set in store TOMORROW, so don't miss out! Two solo performers will open the proceedings, including former Din guitarist (and current Eclipse frontman) Curtis McKenzie in his first non-Vape Escape set since resuming his solo career last month.

Curt's a talented artist, as is well known, and it'll be nice to see him at a familiar downtown venue in this setting! As well, Autumn Roots frontman and SaultMusicScene promoter Jeremy Hannah will kick things off in a rare solo set, so come early for his indie rock renditions! This 19+ concert has a 9:00 PM start time TOMORROW, and a $5 cover charge is in effect. See above for more details, and a for a preview, here's a new video of The Din live at last month's Sky's The Limit fundraiser concert at The Tech! This was posted on the band's Facebook page yesterday rather than on YouTube, unusual as it's a performance clip and not comedic. Filmed by Algoma Family Services executive Ali Juma from the front row, the video features The Din playing their song "Out Of My League", but with a twist: Guest rap verses from fellow performer Tristan "Bold Noize" Goslow!

Whether you find that The Din needed a rap/rock detour is a matter of taste, but Tristan had good and rapid-fire rhymes here, and I just wish he was a little louder in the mix compared to Mike's singing. Check out this unique rendition below, and if you were hoping to see The Din on Sunday at the cancelled Rock The Border Music Fest, don't miss The Din (well, 2/3rds of them) with Curtis and Jeremy TOMORROW NIGHT at LopLops!



Next up, here's one more concert preview for this weekend, as Live705's latest concert goes down THIS SUNDAY NIGHT with a special Father's Day event full of talented performers, including a touring out-of-town band for their first time! That band is Toronto hardcore quartet Speaker, whose aggressive originals and punk essence should provide a solid musical kick to this concert, so don't miss out on their local debut on Sunday! However, Speaker are not the closing band, presumably due to touring commitments, and local blues/hard rock trio Electric Church will instead close out the night like they did at Live705's Easter Bash. Look for more entertaining originals from this fast-rising group! A stacked opening lineup will also include Live705's in-house punk quartet A Dire Setback, fellow newer punk standouts Stegadeth,the Live705 debut of reunited hard rockers Eclipse, indie rock trio The Autumn Roots, and the return of performers from the Soo York City hip hop collective.

For reference sake, the Facebook event page confirms that the S.Y.C. rappers on Sunday will be St. James (returning from Live705's Soo Art Rocks! event), Universal Language, and Big Kowgs, though no word on if DJ Seith will be spinning vinyl to back them up again and/or providing mixes between bands. An 18+ event (not a typo, under 19 attendees can get in with wristbands again) beginning at 7:05 PM, admission is $10 at the door unless you have a $2-off voucher, but there are two ways to get in for $5: Confirm that you are a dad (it is Father's Day, after all!), or bring a ticket bought for Sunday's cancelled Rock The Border Music Fest, so if you're still bummed or annoyed over that event, you can still see bands rocking the Soo on Sunday night, and for cheap! Another varied night of local entertainment is in store for fans on Sunday, including Live705's first toe in the water of out of town attractions, so don't miss out on all of the action in a couple of days!

For a preview, here's a new video from headliners Electric Church's Facebook page! Streamed live by Bradley Shingwauk at the aforementioned Sky's The Limit fundraiser and only just shared on the band's Facebook page on Tuesday, the video features the guys playing their song that I believe is called "Take Me Away" to close their set, before briefly being interviewed by an Algoma Family Services representative on-stage, which is a regular occurrence at this event. The interviewer asks how long the guys have been a band & the role music plays in their personal lives, and while the answers are a little hard to hear, it's a solid video overall, so give it a look below!

CKY Concert Videos, Plus New Electric Church Footage!!

Today's all-video post largely comes from the CKY concert at The Canadian Nightclub this past Thursday night, but there is one more video of another local band to round things out with at post's end, so let's get things rolling! These new CKY videos all come from the ever-prolific Christopher Paci's YouTube channel, as he filmed 10 videos of 3 of the night's bands, which were all posted on Friday! Sadly, he didn't get anything from A Dire Setback's opening set, but kudos again for him getting all of this! 7 of Chris' clips are of the Pennsylvania alt-metal headliners in action, including of their songs "Flesh Into Gear", "Days of Self Destruction", "96 Quite Bitter Beings", "Knee Deep", and "My Promiscuous Daughter", their cover of G.G. Allin's "Bite It You Scum", and as embedded below, their set-opening tracks "The Human Drive (In Hi-Fi)" & "Sporadic Movement". Solid clips as usual, especially given the central camera angle, and attendee heads aren't a massive factor given the band's on-stage setup!

You can also hear Chad Ginsburg's singing better here, at least from my perspective, as from my position at the far right corner of the floor near the stage, I was fighting to hear him over the raucous crowd at times. Give Chris' CKY footage a look above & below!



Next up, Chris posted two videos from co-headlining Kelowna southern hard rock quartet The Wild's set, including their opener "Roadhouse" and, as embedded below, "Party Till You're Dead". Similar camera angle to CKY, but given the lesser numbers on the floor, he had more room to change angles, and The Wild's rollicking brand of hard rocking originals come through nicely on these clips, so check them out above & below too!



Chris' remaining video is of returning local openers Jack Spades playing their usual set opening songs "They Live" and "Rise", giving fans their first ever glimpse of their 4/5ths new lineup in action. Intense as usual (new lineup or not), the new look Jack Spades got things rolling nicely here, and just if you were wondering, J.D. Pearce sang most of "They Live" in the crowd, in case you're wondering where he was. Give both songs a listen below, and don't miss Jack Spades at The Rockstar Bar in just under two weeks!



Finally, here's a new video from a separate concert, plus one more clip, from local blues/hard rock trio Electric Church's Facebook page! One video was quietly posted as a live stream on May 12th (apologies for missing it), and it features the guys jamming instrumentally at, presumably, a band member's home. Unfortunately, the filmer shot most of the video sideways, and as it was a live stream, they couldn't fix it beforehand, but the guys sound good if you can look past the angle!
