New Videos From Fort Creek & Re:Born, Plus More News & Notes!!

I hope all of our Ontario-based readers are adjusting as well to the current lockdown as they can! After focusing solely on Sault Michigan last time out, we're (mostly) in Canada today, courtesy of lots of new videos from two prominent covers-leaning bands, plus a few assorted news updates to round things out with. Here's what you should know!

 

Before Ontario was locked down again, local Southern hard rock quintet Fort Creek played one social distance-enforced concert weekend at Reggie's West two weeks ago, and they live-streamed a bunch of songs from the Saturday, March 27th gig on their Facebook page! These are across five videos, all capturing at least two songs, and unfortunately, most were uploaded sideways. Two were thankfully at a normal angle, including the first video, which features Fort Creek covering Theory Of A Deadman's "Lowlife" and Tonic's "Open Up Your Eyes". The three sideways videos begin with this 12 minute video of them covering Radiohead's "Creep", The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band's "Blue On Black", and Luke Combs' "Can I Get An Outlaw" Next was an 8 minute video of Fort Creek tackling Shaman's Harvest's "Dangerous" (complete with fake emergency alert intro) & Monster Truck's "Don't Tell Me How To Live". 

The fifth and final video was the longest, running for almost 20 minutes, and it features renditions of Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down", Guns N' Roses' "It's So Easy", Seether's "Tonight", and Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" (by way of Nonpoint, perhaps?) Embedded below is the fourth video, and longest of the two that aren't sideways, which features covers of Luke Combs's "Beer Never Broke My Heart" and a southern rock version of Motley Crue's "Live Wire". During Justin's introductions of the band in the fifth video, he acknowledged that bassist Robin "Bones" Lee was playing despite a broken shoulder, so now you know what his teased health issue was. Fort Creek posted this black & white video last week where Bones updated fans on his recovery, thanked everyone who saw them at the Reggievelt, and assured fans that he'll be ready to go when they can play live again.

 

Informative video with some humorous touches, including a very surprising contest for band merchandise! Nice to see so much new video content from Fort Creek when they could still make it, complete with a lot of surprising modern rock covers, and despite three of the five live-streams being sideways, the audio quality holds up! These also give a look into how Reggie's West dealt with social distancing (the lack of fans up front is not accidental), but it is a shame that Shane was stuck behind that cursed pole on the stage. Next up, here's some newly uploaded videos on local power rock quartet Re:Born's Facebook page last month! On March 7th, the band shared a brand new rehearsal video (with the caption "There's a pulse......."), of them also covering Motley Crue's "Live Wire", and while only 18 seconds long, it was a promising sign of life! You know it's a new video because of guitarist Blair Burch's much shorter haircut. The video only shows Blair and Brandan in frame, but the audio quality is solid, and it is nice knowing that Re:Born were playing again.... until the new lockdown, of course, but hopefully they can jam again next month! Embedded below is a newly posted concert video from Re:Born's first show with Elly McWatters on vocals, namely their headlining gig at Soo Blaster on March 12th, 2019 to warm up before opening for The Killer Dwarfs there, and the video features them covering Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It"!

Filmed on a stationary (if slightly crooked) angle, this is a strong rendition of this 1980s metal classic, and assembled fans on the floor definitely enjoyed it! Re:Born had a good first year with this lineup, but alas, the pandemic put the brakes on their momentum, so fingers crossed they can get back on stage safely when things lighten up, hopefully later this year. Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist event or company name:
 

• The live-streamed virtual concert festival Coronafest will return for a second installment on Saturday, April 17th as per the Facebook event page! Co-organized by former Sykotyk Rampage bassist Brian Cattapan (now based out of Sudbury), last year's event featured Brian and local hard rock singer Cory Murchison among it's diverse and mostly non-local lineup, though the current roster has no recognizable local hard rock/punk names. If things change in that regard, we'll let you know, but see above for more details!
  
• The Harp Bar & Grill (formerly Madison's Pub) at 701 Pine Street has reportedly closed it's doors permanently due to the third lockdown, and celebrated it's last call on Good Friday, as per their Facebook page. The Harp hosted a number of acoustic concerts from their 2013 Irish rebranding until the pandemic began, but it may be better known to readers from Madison's higher profile run of electric concerts in the 2000s. I won't get into their divisive response to the pandemic on social media here, but it is sad to lose a venue outright like this, and we do wish best of luck to Harp & Pizza King staff and regular patrons in the future!
  
• Kewadin Casino in Sault Michigan have announced that tickets purchased for all 2020 concerts postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic will be refunded, if not done so already. According to their Facebook page, Kewadin box office representatives will be contacting people with outstanding tickets and will be sending out checks for refund purposes. These dates do include the Black Label Society and Candlebox shows that were called off last spring. Here's hoping for concerts to resume there as normal down the line!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison & The Wyld Stallyns), Rock Of Ages In The Soo, And More!!

Before we begin today's weekend concert preview post, we have a concert cancellation to note, as Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Project 906 are no longer advertised to play at The Back Bay Grill & Games at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley on Saturday, as per their events calendar, with Rock 101's Scott Cook advertised as DJing then instead. A reason for 906's withdrawal was not announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and that we see them back on stage again soon! Now, we have some band updates, a big and relevant musical's trip here next year, and first, SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS within our weekend previews!

Preceding his next Gliss Restaurant matinee gigs TOMORROW & SATURDAY, local acoustic hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to The Water Tower Pub for one night only TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via the venue's December concert calendar earlier this week. With Thursday matinees at Gliss not taking place at the new locale, Tym's schedule is opened up to bring his unplugged cover action back to The Water Tower Pub, which last hosted him for a concert back in June. If you're up for a later show at a more northern/central locale from this prolific solo artist, be at The Water Tower Pub TONIGHT for all of the action! As for his ongoing weekly run at Gliss, you can see his acoustic hits at the new Spring Street location at their usual matinee timeslot tomorrow & Saturday at 6:00 PM with no announced cover charges or age limits, but remember that this is a formal sit-down restaurant.

As for Tym's Water Tower Pub show TONIGHT, expect a 9:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and a 19+ age limit, and just for reference sake, Tym is not advertised for this year's Blues For Food charity concerts at the same venue in two weeks. Next up, local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns will return to The Harp Pub & Grill for their second public concert there THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this concert was only announced via it's Facebook event page earlier this week (albeit with more notice than their Canadian show on November 24th!) Fans will have last seen the Elements side project at the former Madison's Pub over the Halloween weekend, so if you can brave the snow for a run to the Pine Plaza, you'll be rewarded with a night full of varied but often heavy covers on SATURDAY, and audience participation is welcomed too! Note that this is a one-nighter, and while I have seen no advertised reason why there's no Friday gig from the band or venue, this will reportedly be The Wyld Stallyns' last Harp gig of 2018. Expect a 19+ age limit, 9:00 PM start time, and no cover on SATURDAY, so see above for more details, and here's The Stallyns live!

Also in the news, this isn't a "concert" per say, but the hair metal/1980s rock-themed musical Rock of Ages is coming to GFL Memorial Gardens for one night only on Tuesday, March 19th! This is a scripted musical play rather than a true concert (I made an exception for the local Tommy production because of That's Chester being the house band), but this is still a big deal for fans of Rock of Ages' prior stage productions and it's 2012 feature film, so I can't ignore it! Rock of Ages is stopping at the former Essar Center as part of the 10th anniversary tour following it's Broadway debut in 2009 (where it ran until 2015), and is about an aspiring singer and a bartender's romance and quest for stardom in Los Angeles in the 1980s. This jukebox musical is loaded with familiar glam metal and classic rock songs woven into it's plot, with bands like Twisted Sister, Foreigner, Poison, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Whitesnake, Journey, and Def Leppard represented, among many others.

Rock of Ages tickets range from $59.50-$99.50 depending on seating location, and tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10:00 AM at this link, at the in-person box office, or by calling 1-866-775-9422. I personally didn't love the movie (too glossy and polished for my liking), but the play was a smash hit, and the movie soundtrack went gold in Canada, so I have no doubt that 1980s rock lovers will be very interested in seeing Rock of Ages at the Gardens! We'll close today with the latest from Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63, whose ongoing hiatus and lineup/setlist re-tooling may be nearing it's end. In a presumed sign of the band's new makeup, their current Facebook profile photo is solely of guitarist Nathan Switzer, implying that he has survived the changes, but when your dad is frontman Henry Switzer, that may not have been difficult. No word yet on their new(?) bassist, we'll let you know when something is said! A playlist on Apple Music (which I don't have) has the planned setlist for Highway 63's new lineup, and comment replies on their Facebook page imply that The Smithereens, The Stone Temple Pilots, Night Ranger, and some country covers are in their current repertoire, while their new setlist is "almost all new music." On November 27th, the band floated the possibility of hosting a "Back on the Road Party" at Dondee Lanes, which Henry hinted would take place on Saturday, December 22nd.

I'm not rushing to add the event to our concert calendar pending a formal announcement, but if this holds up, it'll be a big way for Highway 63 to end their year+-long concert hiatus, so keep tabs for updates! Finally, Henry shared this video of him covering Cheap Trick's "The Flame" onto Facebook on the 27th as well, which is an attempt to line up professional vocal recording tracks with raw video. Not a bad rendition, it lets Henry showcase his range nicely, though the vantage point from almost behind him is still not optimal. Check it out below, and stay tuned for more from Highway 63!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison & The Wyld Stallyns) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

I hope everyone had a great Halloween! Before we begin this weekend's concert previews, I just wanted to acknowledge that Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned are playing at a special awards banquet this Saturday at the Kinross Speedpark reflecting this summer's auto racing season. Given that admission requires an advance RSVP and isn't clearly a publically attendable event, I'm not covering it here, but keep it in mind if you are inclined to attend! Now, let's start today's post with some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, some on SHORT NOTICE!

Tym Morrison's long-term run of weekly matinee concerts at Gliss Steak & Seafood will finally resume TOMORROW, with shows following on SATURDAY and through at least the end of the year at it's new home! Apologies for the short notice, we were waiting for public confirmation of the arrangement's resumption, which came via the shows' Facebook event page on Monday. While the prolific local acoustic hard rock musician played a private pre-opening engagement there on Friday, TOMORROW'S concert will be his first publically advertised gig at the slightly renamed Gliss Restaurant since mid-July, after the venue closed in advance of a move from The Quality Inn to the former Cesira's building at 133 Spring Street, not far from the old Case's Music/Colosimo's location. Staff and patrons have hyped up the more intimate location and expanded menu, so see above for full details on the culinary side of things, but it's great to Tym back on a regular schedule there!

Note that Tym's advertising does not list any Thursday night gigs, despite traditionally playing a thrice-weekly schedule at Gliss from July-December each year. If this turns out to be a temporary or accidental change, we'll let you know, but that may just be how the schedule is laid out at the new location. Alongside Tym's other new gigs there on November 9th-10th, 16th-17th, 23rd-24th, and 30th-December 1st (we'll add his other December shows to our listings in a few weeks), Tym will also play one previously announced nighttime concert THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, when he returns to The Harp Pub & Grill at the Pine Plaza! Tym was the only regular musical performer at this venue (post-Madison's) from 2013-2016, including a run of weekly concerts for a time, and it's great to see him back after over 2½ years as part of the new concert-heavy path The Harp recently kickstarted! No word though on why he's not playing there tomorrow night.

Tym's revived Gliss shows (including TOMORROW'S & SATURDAY'S) remain 6:00 PM matinees with no announced cover charges or age limits (but remember, this is still a formal sit-down restaurant, not a traditional nightclub venue), while Saturday night's Harp show is a 9:00 PM affair with no cover and a 19+ age limit. Next up, local acoustic hard rock/jam trio The Wyld Stallyns will return to Room 21 for another headlining concert TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via it's official Facebook event page yesterday. Last seen at The Harp last week, this will be the Elements side project's first concert at the nightclub above Low & Slow since their Tom Petty tribute early last month, and first without a single-artist theme there since September. Requests and fan involvement are again encouraged for their varied and often heavy selection of covers and classic hits, so don't miss The Wyld Stallyns latest Room 21 stop TOMORROW NIGHT! Note that this is a one-night-only booking, and I do not know if there will be a Fishbowl and/or Finger Food Friday theme. TOMORROW's concert has a 10:00 PM start time, no announced cover charge, and a 19+ age limit. See above for more details, and here's The Wyld Stallyns live!

Finally, we'll head to Sault Michigan for one more concert preview this weekend, as local hard/blues rock quartet Project 906 will return to Bird's Eye Outfitters (and/or The Superior Cafe) TOMORROW NIGHT! This will be the second show in a week's span for this fan favourite group, who just ended a nearly 2 month break from the stage at Saturday night's Musicians Showcase at the same venue, and as seen on Facebook photos, that Halloween themed-show was a hit. If nothing else, frontman Billy Bernier rocked that Zakk Wylde-esque blonde wig! Tomorrow's show will see more of a return to normal for the 906 crew, so look for more hard rocking cover favourites at the East Portage Avenue locale then! There is no announced age limit or cover charge for this concert, which has a 7:00 PM start time. LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Project 906) & More Halloween Weekend Concert Previews!!

(Updated at 7:27 PM) The always busy Halloween concert weekend is now the entire focus of today's news post, as due to a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TOMORROW NIGHT, I have opted to add it to this post and bump our shorter news item block to our next news post, likely coming by Halloween night. Now, let's dive into previews of the Saturday night Halloween weekend metal and hard rock shows in the Sault area, including one more new show for next month!

Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Project 906 will end a nearly 2 month public hiatus when they return to Bird's Eye Outfitters (and/or The Superior Cafe) TOMORROW NIGHT for their monthly musicians showcase! Apologies for the short notice, the band only signalled their involvement via their Facebook page earlier today. I'm not sure where Project 906 have been so far this fall, but it's great to see Billy, Dustin, Joe, and Tommy back on stage, let alone in their first gig at Bird's Eye since August, so keep this show in mind! The band will also return there on November 2nd (next Friday) in a presumed solo concert, so if you want to see the solo experience of this fan favourite hard rock band, circle your calendars for that date! TOMORROW'S show will indeed be Halloween themed with drink specials and a costume contest, but I cannot confirm any of the other performing artists at press time. Both of these shows have no announced cover charges or age limits, as usual for this venue.

As for starting times, TOMORROW'S musicians showcase will begin at 6:00 PM, while next Friday's concert will start a little later at 7:00 PM. Hopefully Sault Michigan fans get their Halloween party fill TOMORROW at The Superior Cafe, and don't miss 906's return to the public stage then or next week! For a preview, here they are live this summer!

Next up, the second night of promoter J.D. Pearce's 14th annual Halloween party (alternately named "The Howling" this year) goes down TOMORROW NIGHT at The Algonquin Pub, and it will be toplined by a one-off reunion of local horror punk/metal quintet Frightlight! Four years after their concluding their 2009-2014 run at this same event, this fan favourite band will be resurrected for another set full of horror-tinged action, so how about one more "fright night" for old time's sake? No word on how their lineup will be comprised tomorrow, but aside from their drummer, Frightlight's lineup was pretty stable when not counting temporary absences. I can't confirm whether Frighlight will go all-Misfits to play along with the tribute theme, but the opening bands are definitely playing tribute sets, albeit as one-off bands without a publically stated name. Personal Facebook postings have confirmed each band's lineup, so who can you look for tomorrow?

One will be a Tool tribute band featuring former Late Shift bandmates John Barber & Anthony Gagnon alongside Wild Iris guitarist Steve Myers and Skeyes of Seven bassist Alain Fletcher (prior references to HTs bassist Ryan Disano being involved have not been followed up on in recent weeks.) Very talented lineup, and fans may have seen members cover Tool in some of their prior bands already, so they should have a good handle on things tomorrow! The opening band is a tribute to Weezer, and they will be a trio featuring Redundant bandmates Justin Langlois and Rick White, while James' bass spot will be filled for this set by Soundcheck singer/guitarist Travis Sharpe. No word on how Travis' involvement will impact Soundcheck's show at Reggie's West tomorrow night, but he theoretically could head there after the Weezer tribute's opening set and still play most of that show too. Again, this tribute band looks good on paper, but how will they sound tomorrow at The Howling?

And yes, expect lots of Halloween frills tomorrow, as well as a costume contest, so come on down to The Algonquin Pub (not Soo Blaster) if you want some live horror punk, alt-rock, and prog-metal tribute action! Unless you bought a $15 weekend pass for both nights of the Halloween party in advance or at tonight's opening half, admission for tomorrow's 19+ concert will be $10, and a 10:00 PM start time is advertised. With Halloween being mid-week this year, come out to The Algonquin Pub for some early seasonal rock tribute action tonight and tomorrow, and have your costumes ready! Lastly for known hard rock and punk concerts in the area this weekend, we'll head to The Harp Pub & Grill for our first concert preview there in over 2½ years (and first non-Tym Morrison preview there since the Madison's Pub era), as local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns will make their debut at the Pine Street bar TOMORROW NIGHT! After years away from booking multiple local music acts on a regular basis, The Harp recently relaunched and has begun hosting more concerts (albeit generally acoustic ones), with the Elements side project being the first of a heavier vein in this new era. Oddly, the venue has not hyped this show up with any Halloween themes or specials, but The Wyld Stallyns' fan friendly blend of covers and audience participation should go over well at this intimate central venue tomorrow! A 9:00 PM start time is advertised for this 19+ event, which has no announced cover charge. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & Tym Morrison), Plus Soo's Got Talent Videos!!

With an unusually quiet concert weekend giving us no announced hard rock shows this weekend (unless something on supremely short notice comes up), we'll press on with a new news post today, including more videos from an ongoing competition, and some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS on each side of the border! Here's what you should know!

Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned will return to The Runway Bar in Hessel for their Halloween party on October 26th (a.k.a. next Friday!) Note that Banned have not confirmed this show publically at press time, but The Runway Bar confirmed the event on their Facebook page this morning. This fan favourite band has been laying low since the E.U.P. Kewadin Casinos went "in a different direction" last month, with singer/guitarist Alex Traynor working on his burgeoning solo project and debut album in the interim (plus, ironically enough, a St. Ignace Kewadin solo gig.) Banned regularly play somewhere over the Halloween weekend, and they'll head to Hessel this year for their first gig there since February, so look for more hard rocking covers from Alex, Don, and Wayne next week! No word on seasonal frills and/or drink specials for the occasion, but I'd have to assume costumes are welcome. This should be a 10:00 PM event with a 21+ age limit and no cover charge. Next up, Sault Ontario hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison announced a couple of new gigs via Facebook event pages yesterday, but unfortunately, neither are for this weekend. One is a stag & doe next week, and if you've followed the SMS for years, you'll know that we traditionally don't cover stag & doe-hosted concerts on here due to that kind of event's personal nature, lest strangers show up just to see the band. However, the other show is fully public, as Tym will return to the relaunched Harp Pub & Grill for one night only on Friday, November 2nd! While this is another big event as "live music begins" at The Harp, Tym is no stranger to the venue, as he played there frequently from their fall 2013 re-opening through March 2016, including on a Gliss-esque weekly arrangement for a time. It's great to see Tym back at the former Madison's Pub, so don't miss out early next month for more unplugged hard rock classics! A 9:00 PM start time is in effect for this 19+ gig, with no announced cover charge.

Visit the official Facebook event page for details on Tym's Harp return, and as for the resumption of his weekly Gliss Steak & Seafood run, Tym has hinted on his personal Facebook page that he'll be back playing there regularly next week, but I'm taking that with a grain of salt for now, given that Gliss have not formally signalled their re-opening date yet. We'll let you know when things resume for Tym's weekly arrangement at Gliss' new Spring Street home when things are firmly public!

Also, here's some more relevant video content from the ongoing Soo's Got Talent competition at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech, as there is a qualifying round video on the event's Facebook page featuring the aforementioned Tym Morrison! Apologies for the belated write-up on this video (well after Tym's elimination), but we didn't get widespread word on The Soo's Got Talent until the second round lead-up. I watched all of The Soo's Got Talent first round qualifier videos (available at this link), and only two have an overt link to our covered genres. One starts with then-Re:Born singer Robert Nevitt & guitarist Rick Atkins covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" in their qualifying round performance from August (they were eliminated in the first round), though no word if they and the absent Randy Russon have a band in the works. Not a bad rendition of this southern rock classic! The other video is embedded below, and features 11 advancing acts from the qualifying round, so who and what can you see in this lengthy upload?

These performers are singers unless otherwise credited, with song covered in brackets where available. In performance order, you'll see Michaela Lynn ("A Million Dreams" from The Greatest Showman), Allie Bouchard (Sam Smith's "Stay With Me"), Daniella Brewer (Elle King's "Ex's & Oh's"), magician Darren Emond, juggler Kyle Hicks, pianist R.J. Renner (The Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris", I believe), Lori Bouchard (Patsy Cline's "Leavin' On Your Mind), Tym Morrison playing a newer original song, Bethany Pelletier (Rachel Platten's "Fight Song", same as round 1), The St. Mary's College Singers (Cyndi Lauper's "True Colours"), and Hope Connor (Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".)  For reference sake, Michaela, Daniella, Darren, and Bethany are all still in the competition and will be competing tomorrow at The Tech as part of the third round, while Kyle, Tym, and Hope were eliminated after last week's second round.

Lots of talent to find here, especially if you're a fan of modern top 40 music, and Tym's performance is solid as well, so this video is worth a watch to see what you missed during the private auditions last month and/or the first round competition! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Lightmares & The Wyld Stallyns), Soo's Got Talent Updates, And More!!

With the snow coming down, here's a new news post for your Monday afternoon, and it includes some new videos, updates to a recent music competition, and leading off, some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for the coming weeks! Here's what you should know!

Local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns will make their Harp Bar & Grill debut on Saturday, October 27th! No word on if this show will have a Halloween theme, but this will be their first announced show since their Tom Petty tribute-themed gig at Room 21 earlier this month. This event is part of the former Madison's Pub's return to live concert bookings, under the stewardship of recent Room 21 booker (and ex-Suicide Kings frontman) Mike Gaetano, complete with a brand new Facebook page and a refreshed Pizza King menu. They've been promoting the new music schedule by saying that "live music begins", and that The Harp is "the Sault's newest live music venue", despite Madison's hosting many concerts in the 2000s, and Tym Morrison performing there regularly from their 2013 relaunch through early 2016. Clearly, The Harp isn't counting the Madison's era, and aside from Tym's shows, they didn't really host live music at the time.

Among other concerts, open mic nights, and karaoke events, The Wyld Stallyns' fan-friendly hard rock covers should go over well in two weeks' time, so don't miss the Elements side project at 701 Pine Street then! This is a 19+ concert with a 9:00 PM start time and no announced cover charge, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and stay tuned for more from the Stallyns and the Harp's new concert calendar as it rolls in!

Next up, another out of town band from last month's Oh!No festival in Leeburn will make their way to our area again this fall, as Sudbury punk trio Lightmares will make their Sault Ste. Marie debut on Thursday, November 8th at LopLops Lounge! Fans of the annual Oh!No fest will be no strangers to Lightmares following their sets at both installments, but now fans can see them in the Soo proper, and with their upbeat yet edgy brand of "deadly rock & roll", fans should be eager for more original action from Lightmares next month! Two opening bands are to be announced, and while fellow Oh!No acts would seemingly make sense, none from this year are opening for The Therapists next month, so it's anyone's guess. A presentation of Six, Two, Oh. in what they advertise as their 90th concert to date, this 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time Visit the Facebook event page for more details, and stay tuned for updates!

Also today, the results are in from Friday night's The Soo's Got Talent second round competition at The W.W. Baldwin Auditorium at The Tech, and unfortunately, local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison did not advance to this Friday's third round. As per the official Facebook page, judges chose singers Daniella Brewer and Michaela Lynn, rapper Tristan "Bold Noize" Goslow, acoustic rock quartet The Primarinas, and magician Darren Emond as the announced "top 5", while blues singer/guitarist Leon "Li'l Eagle" Kyle & singer Bethany Pelletier were also advanced as wild cards. You can see those 7 acts hit the stage again for the third of four rounds of this competition, and our best wishes go out to everyone as the showdown heats up! As they did for the prior rounds, video footage of the surviving acts was uploaded to Facebook yesterday, with all but Darren in the video below (his magic performance was posted separately due to technical difficulties.)

There are some hard rock covers from the musical acts, so what should you know there? After an introduction by co-organizer Barbara Rajnovich, you'll see Li'l Eagle playing an original song (I believe), Daniella covering Evanescence's "My Immortal (at 7:25), Bethany covering Katy Perry's "Roar", The Primarinas covering Nirvana's "All Apologies" (at 15:26), Michaela covering Meghan Trainor's "Better When I'm Dancing", and Bold Noize rapping an original composition. Best of luck to the talented lineup moving onto Friday's third round, so check everything out above and below, and we'll let you know if more hard rock performances surface!



Finally, here's a surprise find from a recent YouTube search: A rare live cover song by Woods of Ypres! In the defunct local black/doom metal band's final Toronto-era concerts from 2007, they added a cover of Katatonia's "Deadhouse" to their set, including at the January 2007 Moonsorrow concert there, as documented at the time via their old message board. Frontman David Gold even stated there in 2008 that they planned to record a studio version of "Deadhouse", but if it was ever completed, it was never released, much like their earlier cover of Bathory's "Lake of Fire". A prior live video of Woods' cover of "Deadhouse" has long since been taken off of YouTube (Toronto-era live videos are rare enough already), but YouTube user ruinedcities quietly uploaded an audio recording of this very cover last month from an unidentified concert, which appears to have circulated in Katatonia cover bootlegs. The audio quality isn't great, especially for vocal clarity, but how does this sound?

Woods of Ypres seem to do Katatonia justice with this rendition, and given that it's from Katatonia's first full doom metal album without death growling vocals, this could be seen as a bit of foreshadowing towards Woods' own shift to a more melodic doom metal sound from 2009 onward. I just wish the audio quality was better, but give this rare cover a listen below, and hopefully more media from Woods of Ypres' mid-2000s concerts surfaces down the line!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Ten Foot Pole), Plus Peril & Project 906 Concert Previews!!

Here's our final post of August 2018 (luckily a busier month than recently usual), and it includes our last concert previews of this weekend, and leading off, our long awaited LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for a major punk show hitting a central venue we haven't heard much from in years, so here's what you should know! (Edited on Saturday at 1:33 AM to replace the assorted short story write-up with the Project 906 preview, which was accidentally left out in this post's original version, in order to keep this post at a similar length. The short stories will return un-edited in a post next week.)

California punk rock veterans Ten Foot Pole will headline in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday, October 25th at a rare non-acoustic concert at The Harp Bar & Grill! Mainstays of the American punk scene since the 1990s, Ten Foot Pole have a devoted following from memorable melodic punk tracks like "A.D.D.", "The Getaway", and "Never Look Back", and it'll be very interesting to see them on local soil this fall! Local punk trio Redundant are advertised to open in their first local concert appearance since the release of their debut EP, as part of a mini-tour run supporting Ten Foot Pole on their three Northern Ontario dates, as per their Facebook page. Great opportunity for the guys, but will this be considered Redundant's de facto local CD release concert? Fellow local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades' logo is used as the Facebook event page's cover photo, which implies their involvement too, but their name is not included with Redundant's among the openers, and at least one more band is allegedly to be announced.

And yes, this show is definitely at The Harp, marking the first non-acoustic concert that we've covered there since the former Madison's Pub re-opened under it's new ownership & theme in 2013, so we'll have to see how things shape up at 701 Pine Street in two months! Given the relatively small size of The Harp, this concert (promoted by Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce) only guarantees 50 advance tickets, which cost $15 at this link, though no word on in-person availability. This is a 19+ show with a 9:30 PM start time, and no, this is not J.D.'s annual Halloween Party event. That has been separately teased in personal Facebook postings, and while we await a public announcement on the bands and location, I would expect the show(s) to be on October 26th & 27th. I'm not a scholar of Ten Foot Pole, but they have been a familiar presence among punk contacts for years, and they have a fun sound that should get a solid audience, so see above for more details!

Next up, here's our last hard rock concert previews for this weekend (barring super late notice confirmations), starting with Traverse City, Michigan classic metal trio Peril's return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Despite being advertised as taking place at The Rapids Lounge in Sault Ste. Marie on their Reverbnation page, Peril's Facebook page has since changed the venue to St. Ignace's Kewadin branch, though I don't know whether this was a mistake on Peril's part or if the shows were moved south. In any event, apologies for the short notice on the venue change! These shows will be Peril's first in St. Ignace since June, and their hard hitting classic covers should be a fun soundtrack for the weekend there, sso keep these in mind if you're in the E.U.P.! Expect 9:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 21+ age limits. See above for more details, and here's Peril live!

Finally for today, here's one more weekend concert preview post (apologies for this missing this post's original version), as local hard rock cover quartet Project 906 will kick off September with a one night only concert TOMORROW NIGHT at The Back Bay Grill & Games at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley! While not recently plugged on 906's Facebook page, the band acknowledged this show back in July, and it is listed on the casino's event calendar. Last seen in the Soo three weeks ago, this will be the second of three scheduled gigs for this popular local attraction at "your perfect up north retreat" in 2018, following their Back Bay show in June, with one more lined up for December. Project 906's tried and tested hard rock covers should find a receptive audience at this waterfront nightclub, so don't miss out tomorrow for all of the action! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Toystock & Tym Morrison) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

Let's get our post-Halloween concert previews rolling on this Thursday morning, and while there's a visible drop in major concerts to start November, we do have LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for this month and a touring Michigan band's return north, plus a major returning concert event to announce for later this month! Note that we will touch on Sunday's K'Man & The 45s concert and potential late notice announcements in the coming days, so don't worry! Now, here's what you should know!

With a new month upon us, and Facebook confirmations of this weekend's gigs now online, we'll now add longtime Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison's November slate of acoustic solo concerts to our listings! These include returns to Gliss Steak & Seafood for matinees on each Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the month, and with one likely exception, regular nighttime concerts at The Harp Bar & Grill on each Friday & Saturday in November, and both do include shows TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! Apologies for the short notice on those, we were waiting for Tym to confirm them outside of his website, and again, we take these a month at a time due to their uncertain length and exceedingly lengthy scheduling on his website. This all amounts to 19 November dates, including shows on the 12th-14th, 19th-21st, and 26th-28th, but we haven't listed a November 14th gig at The Harp due to the bar's likely broadcast of UFC 193 that night.

All 12 of the Gliss matinees are at 6:00 PM with no announced cover charges or age limits (but remember, it is a restaurant), while the 7 Harp shows are all 19+ events at 10:00 PM with no announced cover charges (and again, he's at Gliss TONIGHT and both venues TOMORROW & SATURDAY!) Next up, the fourth annual Toystock charity concert event will go down on Sunday, November 29th! After three years at The Canadian Nightclub, the annual Christmas Cheer fundraiser is moving to The Grand Gardens at 1324 Great Northern Road for unannounced reasons, but this should be a larger location, and hopefully it works out well for involved! As in prior years though, donations to Christmas Cheer (be they toys, non-perishable food, or money) will garner you admission to this ALL AGES event, and like in past years, expect the Stuff-A-Bus on site, appearances from Santa & Mrs. Claus, food & drinks, prize giveaways, and more, so check out the official news press release from promoters Maxx Entertainment at this location! Once again, the lineup is focused around veteran local cover bands, but only three bands are returnees from past installments, with the rest comprised of new faces (to the Toystock series) and some surprises, so who can you expect?

In apparent order from the press release, the bands this year (10 in 10 hours once again) will include country cover veterans Bone Yard (in their record-tying third Toystock set), VM Radio Battle-winning post-punk quartet Gnaeus, a one-off punk cover band named The Rude-Offs (more on them in a second), a mystery band named Under The Influence (let us know if you can confirm anything on them!), the recently revived classic rock quartet Nikkfitt, classic/hard rock quartet Mourning Wood (in their second straight Toystock set), blues rockers Mojo, all-female classic rock quintet Domina (also back from last year), veteran country trio The Algo Rhythms, and students from the Bocturoc Academy of Music to open the day. Regarding The Rude-Offs, I can confirm that their lineup will feature Destroilet drummer Matt Waples and other performers to be finalized, and their set will be comprised of punk covers of Christmas songs, which should be very interesting! We'll let you know if we hear anything final on their lineup, or the identity of Under The Influence!

Note that while the lineup is largely different from past years (including the absence of Lucky 13 for the first time), remember that last year's Toystock also only had 3 returning bands, and this way, there's a fresh lineup for a new year, with plenty of talent to go around! Toystock IV begins at 12:00 PM at the Grand Gardens on November 29th, and check the above links for full current details! There's a little something for everyone, with lots of familiar faces, so don't miss Toystock's grand return at month's end, and stay tuned for updates (both on Under The Influence and in general!)

Finally for today, here's a final pair of previously announced concerts for this weekend, as Traverse City, Michigan metal trio Scarkazm will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Last seen there (or anywhere in the Eastern U.P.) four months ago, the Peril sister band have been well and busy as of late, and if you've missed Adam, Dave, and Jeff's heavy covers and originals up here, be in St. Ignace either tomorrow or Saturday! Of course, if you'd rather see Peril, they'll be back in our area over the December 18th weekend. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Gnaeus & Havadder) And Most Halloween Weekend Concert Previews!!

With the Halloween weekend almost upon us, let's kick off the previews of what should be another exciting weekend of shows, including a pair of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! Note that we will touch on the Highway 63 Halloween show in our next post, plus potential late night notice concerts that we aren't aware of yet if possible. Here's what you should know!

Local post-punk/garage rock quartet Gnaeus will return to the stage TOMORROW NIGHT for a solo headlining Devil's Night gig at LopLops Lounge! Apologies for the short notice, the show was announced by the venue last week, but with a slow news stretch at the time, we held it for this weekend's previews. Busy working on their debut CD "Loomings" since their Emergency Festival set in August (I don't believe they ended up playing at the Dusty Tucker show after all), this will be their first LopLops concert since June's Lopstock II event, so if you've missed the VM Radio Battle of the Bands winners lately, be at LopLops TOMORROW! No word however on if the venue will welcome attendees in costumes a day early, but Gnaeus have teased a prize for "the best toga." Also, as a note regarding recording sessions for "Loomings", the band revealed on their Facebook page that they were "tracking one of our last songs" on October 20th, and indicated in a comment that the CD would "be out for Christmas."

Hopefully that holds out, I know it's been highly anticipated by fans! Also, look for some new songs during Gnaeus' set TOMORROW at 9:00 PM, you must be 19 or older to attend, and there's no announced cover charge. Also in newer announcements, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Havadder will return to Studio 10 THIS SATURDAY NIGHT for their second straight Halloween party at the downtown gentlemen's club! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the show via it's Facebook event page yesterday. Two weeks removed from their latest stop at The Rockstar Bar, this will be Havadder's first show at the Hudson Street venue in over two months, but will fit in with their prior pattern of playing there only on holiday weekends. Last year's Halloween party at Studio 10 apparently went well for Havadder, so they're having at 'er again THIS SATURDAY with their fan favourite covers, a costume contest (with prizes), and yes, exotic entertainment from the ladies, if that is your thing. Like last year, there is a $5 cover, you obviously must be 19 to attend, and a 10:30 PM start time is advertised. Moving to previously announced concerts, longtime Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will round out the month of October with his usual weekly matinee gigs at Gliss Steak & Seafood TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY, followed by his usual Harp Bar & Grill shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! No word on of this weekend's shows at either venue will have a Halloween theme and/or costume contests (particularly on Saturday), but look for more acoustic hard rock classics from this veteran local favourite at the downtown restaurant and central pub this weekend! And yes, we will touch on his likely November concerts at both venues when confirmed on Facebook. The Gliss shows are 6:00 PM affairs with no announced cover charges or age limits (but remember, it is a restaurant), while the Harp shows are at 10:00 PM with no cover and 19+ age limits. Finally, local promoter J.D. Pearce (in association with Tidal Records) will host his eleventh annual Halloween Party THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at The Algonquin Pub! Returning there for the third time in four years (and to Saturday night after spending last year on Friday), this local Halloween tradition will once again see three bands hit the stage, but for the first time since 2008, neither Frightlight or Destroilet will perform, and like that year, all of the bands will take on tribute band themes for the evening, with Toronto extreme metal quartet Caym (or "Metallicaym") returning for the second time this year with a Metallica tribute set in store! Local support will include a Sublime tribute set from funk/hard rockers The Elements (replacing a one-off T-Rex Manning reunion covering The Misfits, and a Mitch Sirie-led Korn tribute), as well as a one-off(?) punk tribute band featuring Destroilet's Christian Foisy, Sykotyk Rampage's Tony Briglio, Jack Spades' Johnny Belanger & Jesse Cook, and The Billy Bastards' Greg Beharriel, who are hyped to cover Rancid, NOFX, and Operation Ivy songs.

Notably, this is the first Halloween Party in memory that doesn't feature a band fronted by J.D., but a guest spot with at least one band is extremely likely (Metallica covered The Misfits... just saying!) A costume contest of some description is also likely for this year's Halloween Party, which has a $10 cover, 19+ age limit, and 9:00 PM start time, so get more details at the official Facebook event page! This should be a great Halloween party as usual, and the tribute theme should be very interesting, so don't miss out at The Algonquin Pub THIS SATURDAY, and while I couldn't find them covering Metallica online, here they are live this summer!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Stiffler's Mom, Havadder, And Mourning Wood), And Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's now time to tackle this weekend's concert previews! It's not a major weekend for original bands, but with SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS from three local hard rock bands for the next few nights, and some previously announced shows to round things out, fans have options for some live music before the Halloween season shows kick off next weekend! Now, here's what you should know, and yes, we'll get to additional late notice shows in the coming days if confirmed!

Local classic/hard rockers Mourning Wood are scheduled to return to Reggie's Place downtown TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, we only heard about the shows last night via drummer Glen Thomas' personal Facebook page last night, and as of this writing, the band themselves haven't plugged the shows on Facebook. Fresh off of last weekend's show at the venue's sister location Reggie's West, this once again sees this prolific cover band playing a triple header at the typically country-centric bar, so if you've missed them downtown lately, keep these shows in mind! Is it odd that, despite playing three shows during their recent Reggie's weekends, they rarely promote shows there publically? Note that Glen's plug of these shows indicated that "the trio version" of Mourning Wood will be playing this weekend, presumably meaning that bassist Paul Belair will be absent and Steven Flint will be back on bass for these shows.

There's no announced cover charges for TONIGHT, TOMORROW, or SATURDAY NIGHT's shows, you must be 19 or older to attend, and there's no announced cover charges. Next up, local hard rock/party cover trio Stiffler's Mom will return to The Canadian Nightclub for solo headlining shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, the shows were just announced by singer/drummer Greg Simpson on the venue's Facebook group last night. Two weeks removed from Lucky 13's weekend set that brought headlining cover hard rock back to this venue, these will be Stiffler's Mom's first public shows at the The Canadian since Toystock two years ago, and with Greg's company Maxx Entertainment's co-promoted return of bands to the weekend schedule there going well, hopefully Stiffler's Mom can keep the good times rolling for fans over the coming nights! Like at other recent Canadian shows, there is a 9:00 PM start time TOMORROW & SATURDAY, you must be 19 to attend, and there's no announced cover charges. Finally for late weekend concert announcements, local classic/hard rock quartet Havadder are scheduled to return to The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Once again, apologies for the short notice, the shows were only announced yesterday via the venue's own Facebook event page. Two weeks removed from their last shows at The Rednecks Saloon, this will be Havadder's first stop at The Rockstar Bar in about two months, but you may notice that the venue confirms that they'll apparently be playing TOMORROW too, despite the Rockstar Republic club nights on Fridays, which were hyped as being on both floors of The Algonquin Hotel. The Rockstar Republic Facebook page confirms that they "are moving back to our home in the basement", though it's not clear if the club nights are permanently moving downstairs to The Algonquin Pub (or "The Zoo"), or if it's a one night thing due to a prior booking, but note that most recent Rockstar Republic promotion hasn't directly mentioned the double floor format, rather only one floor when plugging events.

Are Friday nights being opened back up to bands at The Rockstar Bar, at least partially? Time will tell, but in any event, you can check out Havadder's entertaining and often heavy covers TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at 10:30 PM, there's no announced cover (but bring money just in case), and you must be 19 to attend. We'll close this weekend concert preview post with previously announced shows from prolific local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison, whose lengthy arrangements at The Harp Bar & Grill and Gliss Steak & Seafood will continue as expected this weekend! While not confirmed on Facebook yet, his website's calendar confirms that he'll be playing his usual matinees at Gliss TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY, which he'll follow with his regular nighttime shows at The Harp TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, so fans of his acoustic hard rock covers can take in his diverse and extensive range of covers five times this weekend! Like usual, all of these shows have no announced cover charges (but remember that Gliss is a restaurant), the Gliss shows have no age limits and 6:00 PM start times, and the Harp shows are 19+ events with 10:00 PM start times. LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Nudge, Banned, And Lucky 13) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

News has been slow as of late, with only three posts (one a monthly feature) since our last weekend concert preview post, but things will pick up soon! Today, we have lots of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS and previews of one more set of shows that we already heard about, so let's kick things off with a notable band's return to our area, and a linked apology (and yes, we will touch on Peril's shows this weekend in our next post, so don't worry!)

Marquette, Michigan hard rock cover quartet Nudge will rock The Satisfied Frog in Sault Michigan TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, and as it turns out, this is their second straight weekend there! I profusely apologize for missing last weekend's shows at The Frog, they completely slipped us by during last week's previews, as well as for the late notice on these shows, which we only heard about a couple of days ago. After a ten month absence from our area, Nudge returned to The Frog for the first time this year last week, and like with this weekend's shows, they were preceded by acoustic gigs by frontman Danzo McCracken on the Wednesday and Thursday, so if you're up for mellower covers, be at The Frog TONIGHT as well! Last week's shows were also just their second weekend in the Soo with current drummer Bob Crawford. TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S shows have 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 21+ age limits. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page!

I again sincerely apologize for missing last weekend's Nudge shows on here, but hopefully the guys had a blast in their long awaited return to the E.U.P., as it's been way too long! Next up, Kinross hard/classic rock trio Banned will rock Dondee Lanes in Sault Michigan TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the shows on their Facebook page on Monday, and they weren't included (or booked?) when they last announced late-2015 shows there in August. The new Dondee bookings also join one more new local show on Saturday, November 14th, which will uniquely take place in their hometown at The Kinross Township Hall at 4916 West Curtis Avenue, specifically at their Orioles' Club inside the hall. I don't recall Banned ever playing at this venue, but a show in their stomping grounds should be a nice change of pace! TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S Dondee shows will mark Banned's first announced gigs there since November of last year, so if you've missed Banned at this popular bowling alley/concert venue, don't miss out!

Also, a New Year's Eve gig in Drummond Island was newly announced on Monday as well, but that is outside of our coverage range (no word yet though on a Halloween weekend gig, which Banned usualy have on their schedule.) Both new regional shows have early 8:00 PM start times, no announced cover charge, and while the Dondee shows are 21+, I can't confirm a potential age limit for the Kinross gig. Moving north to Sault Ontario, here's one more late announcement, as local alternative/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 will return to The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Once again, I apologize for the short notice, the show was only announced via the official Facebook event page on Tuesday. A one-nighter due to The Algonquin Hotel's Rockstar Republic dance nights on Fridays, this will be Lucky 13's first Rockstar Bar stop in three months, and come fresh off of their first ever solo headlining gigs at The Canadian last week. With alumni of Aftersight, Turner Up, Wishbone, and The Gully Yodelers in their lineup, you know that Lucky 13 will deliver a fun night of hard hitting covers on Saturday, so keep this one in mind for SATURDAY NIGHT! And remember, don't come Friday if you're hoping to see Lucky 13, but if you like club nights, bring white clothing for the blacklight party!

Finally for today, here's some previously announced concerts, as longtime Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will continue his long running weekly arrangements at The Harp Bar & Grill and Gliss Steak & Seafood this weekend, including acoustic hard rock cover matinees at Gliss TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY, which he'll follow as usual with his regular nighttime shows at The Harp (formerly Madison's Pub) TOMORROW NIGHT & SATURDAY NIGHT! After a slightly abbreviated previous weekend schedule due to The Harp's UFC PPV broadcast, Tym's back on his usual five-shows-a-weekend schedule, so if you want to check out his unplugged renditions of hard rock classics, be sure to check out Tym either downtown at Gliss or central at The Harp over the coming days! The Gliss shows are 6:00 PM matinees with no announced cover or age limits (though remember, this is a restaurant), while the Harp shows are 10:00 PM gigs with no announced cover and 19+ age limits.
