Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Poison Girl & Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe

It's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles, continuing our monthly spotlight of randomly selected bands who are no longer active, but deserve a look back for modern readers! This month's bands include a promising tribute band from recent years and a talented solo project with an album to their name, so here's what you should know on both!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poison Girl

Genre: Gothic Rock/Metal

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members:

Tiffany Stocco (Jack Spades), vocals/guitar
Bill "Orthae" Bennett (Stereo North), bass
Johnny Belanger (The Bear Hunters), drums
Brian Holmes (Gates of Winter), keyboard

Info/Analysis: All three members of local punk trio Stegadeth (plus keyboardist Brian Holmes) paid homage to Finnish goth rockers HIM as part of night #1 of J.D. Pearce's annual Halloween party concerts at The Rockstar Bar on October 27th, 2018. Here, they shared the stage with Tiffany & Johnny's other debuting tribute band, the Distillers-honouring Coral Fang. Surprisingly, both bands would continue forward after Halloween, even with Facebook pages, but Poison Girl only played one further concert at the same venue in May 2019, alongside the debuting Stoned To Deaf covering Rage Against The Machine. Public updates on Poison Girl did not follow, later complicated by Tiffany's move out of town last fall, though her other bands are still labeled as active on the SMS. Unfortunately, no public media has surfaced from Poison Girl's gigs, and while a HIM tribute may have been more appreciated locally a decade earlier, the talent was definitely there!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe

Genre: Technical/Progressive/Death Metal

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie/London, Ontario

Members:

Matthew Parr (Czech Hotel, Our Place Or Yours), all instruments

Info/Analysis: Launched out of his London hometown circa 2010, Matt brought his solo project Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe with him when he moved to Sault Ste. Marie from around 2012, with new audio recordings posted frequently on the H.M.M. Soundcloud page and (more sparingly) on their YouTube channel. After briefly searching for a local band in late 2013, Matt released a Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe EP on Bandcamp that December, before moving back to London in 2014 and commencing work in bands there. New song uploads continued through February 2015, before the project fell inactive, but Matt did post some outside non-metal audio recordings on Soundcloud until early 2017. I enjoyed H.M.M.'s djent-laden technicality and musicianship on songs like "Whatever" & "Summit", and Matt was a musician who never got his deserved due while living here, but I would have liked to have heard longer songs with more solos. Here's Matt covering Horse The Band's "Arrive"!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! Our next randomly selected band to be spotlighted will be a big one, namely local/Toronto indie punk veterans Treble Charger! Note that their online presence since their 2013 reunion has minimal, and if they resume public activity before November 10th, I will pick a different band. That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news on the site next week! Thanks everyone!

Sault Michigan Weekend Concert Previews, A New Video, And More Updates!!

Let's wrap up this weekend's concert previews by covering Sault Michigan-area hard rock shows for this final weekend of February, but to round things out, we have a new video from a E.U.P. artist and some assorted recent notes! Now, here's what you should know!

We'll start at the newly re-opened Sault Michigan bar Three One Three on Ashmun (formerly The Back Door), where Kinross classic/hard rockers Banned will hit the stage TONIGHT! This favourite local trio played at 313 Ashmun under it's old identity back when The Back Door experimented with live bands in 2013, but the new ownership look to be more open to hosting live bands, and Banned are the first hard rock-leaning band that we've seen there since the relaunch in a full concert capacity, so definitely consider checking Banned out tonight at the new/old venue! Note that Banned were previously been scheduled to play Manistique's Kewadin Casino tomorrow, so DJ Dan Dunn will be spinning tunes at Three One Three tomorrow instead. A 9:30 PM start time is in effect for this 21+ concert, which doesn't have an announced age limit. For more details, visit the above links, and here's Banned live last year!

Also in the Eastern U.P. this weekend, Sault Michigan hard rock quartet 415E will head south to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for concerts TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! After almost two months off, the former Hubbard-Menard Band will return to the stage for the first time in 2016 this weekend, and they should have two more solid nights of Van Halen-inspired hard rock in store for fans in St. Ignace this weekend, so don't miss out on the action if you're in the area! Theyll be back in St. Ignace in two months' time as well, in case you can't make it to this weekend's shows. Like usual for 415E's Kewadin Casino gigs, there's no announced cover charges for these 21+ concerts, which both start at 9:00 M. For more details, visit the above links, and for a preview, here's 415E live in the Soo early in their run!

Also today, here's a new solo vocal/guitar cover from former Elipzis bassist/Riot! By Night frontman Ryan Harrison, who posted this rendition of Evans Blue's "Cold (But I'm Still Here)" onto his YouTube channel yesterday! His first solo song in two months (though oddly filmed on a vertical cell phone camera angle), it's a nice version of this modern hard rock song from a band who should be familiar from multiple recent Kewadin Casino gigs, so check it out below, and hopefully more turns up from Ryan soon!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

  • We have moved local/London progressive metal solo project Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity. The Matt Parr-led solo project hasn't posted a public update since uploading their most recent "Heavytrack" onto their Soundcloud page on February 24th of last year, with other online pages being inactive for band updates longer still. Matt's a talented guitarist, so be sure to follow his continuing band work in London to see what he's now up to!
  • In a clarification for the Fishbowl Festival-opening Like A Pisces concert at The Gore Street Cafe earlier this month, musician and festival/venue head Sam Decter revealed on his blog that an additional band named Bass Monster 7L (perhaps linked to the 7L podcast?) performed at the event, while the previously advertised Lauren McClure did indeed play a solo set that night. Still no idea on the identities of Brash Gash or Insoosticide, but hopefully this Nirvana tribute was a blast to kick the festival off!
  • In a belated update to our profile of December 2009's Kiss Battle of the Bands, we added a trivia note to reference runners-up Lion Ride's battle runs in Toronto in 2010, where they finished in third place at March 2010's Great Canadian T-Shirt Battle, and were semifinalists in that November's Indie Week competition (won by Toronto dance rockers These Electric Lives, whose last drummer was Lion Ride's Mike Indovina.) And lastly, a reference to competitors Bring The Fallen's win in May 2010's Downtown Showdown is also included. I'm surprised that all wasn't noted before, but now we're reasonably caught up going into next month!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for much more news and features in due course! Thanks everyone!

Swampstravaganza & Mike Haggith Updates, And Much More!!

Before we recap the results of last night's VM Radio Battle's opening night, here's a new news post to clear out some recent items, including a sudden new EP release, a unique video, and more, but first, here's some honestly overdue news on a big upcoming concert event!

We'll start today with some big updates for the fifth annual Swampstravaganza, now at The Canadian Nightclub on Saturday, May 9th, including that the annual multi-band all ages concert now has an official website! Created through Wix, the page includes photos and band lists for the past 4 installments at The Oddfellows Hall, an official logo, a $10 admission fee, and confirmation that this year's Swampfest will begin at 5:00 PM with the first band starting at 6:00 PM, with timeslots alotted for just 8 bands. This would make this year's event the smallest yet in the Swampfest series, but it would allow for a more manageable schedule! Also, the former "Sewer Swampstravaganza" branding is now only designated for the first year's concert in 2011, with "Quagmire", "Marshland", and "Bog" replacing "Sewer" to label later installments (no word on what this year's swamp-esque name would be.) As for confirmed bands, there's such high demand for this year that promoters have opted to roll out official band registration forms to apply to play, so what should you know on them?

We won't get into the legal jargon, but full details on what bands should bring and expect can be read at this link, where you can also sign up to potentially play this year, and what you need to provide in your application. I know many local artists want to play at this year's Swampstravaganza, so if you want in, act A.S.A.P. via the above links, stay tuned for updates, and the show's website is now in our "Other Local Metal Links"!

Next up, here's the latest from a solo performer from last year's Swampstravaganza, that being Haggith drummer Mike Haggith, so what's he currently up to? yesterday, Mike put a new digital EP named "Of Cars & Criminals" on sale via his Bandcamp page, which compiles three songs from his upcoming full length studio album "The Warinside". The EP (which is available on a "name your price" model) features the title track, "The Snake", and his newest song "We Met As Surrogates", which was just unveiled on his YouTube channel yesterday as well. Featuring Haggith/Din bandmate Curtis McKenzie on guest guitar and/or backing vocals on all 3 tracks, this EP is a nice teaser for fans awaiting "The Warinside" in full, but we'll hold on a review of this EP until the full album's expected release, as it'd be redundant to review both. Check out "We Met As Surrogates" below and the whole "Of Cars & Criminals" EP above, and don't miss Mike Haggith & The Din at The Speak Easy Battle of the Bands TOMORROW!

Also today, here's a unique look into local guitarist/Audiofumes podcast host Mike Cliffe's work behind the scenes, as this video (uploaded last week to his YouTube channel) is of him running a soundcheck for a live podcast, using The Bear Hunters' "Collapse The Sun" as background audio! It's an interesting look at the technical side of things (and not odd when you look at other similar videos on Mike's channel), and fans of The Bear Hunters who don't have "Eternal Hibernation" yet may like the audio sample! Give the video a look below, and definitely consider checking out Audiofumes, it's a quality podcast with notable, local, and underground artists galore!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Local all-female hard rock/punk quartet The Danger Cats have unveiled their first ever studio-produced original song via their new Reverbnation page! It's of their song "Wanted Man", which was produced by AlgomA's Jamie Vincent and mixed by Cross Dog's Mark Rand, according to their Facebook page. It's nice to hear a great quality version of one of their originals, and fans should love it, so check it out at the above link, and don't miss the girls at the VM Radio Battle of the Bands next week!
  • The Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe, the local/London solo metal project from Our Place Or Yours guitarist Matt Parr, now has a few new songs uploaded to their Soundcloud page in the past month! They include two acoustic songs (named "Huh" & "A Very Special Acoustic Song", the latter being longer and better composed) and the 49 second unfinished "Heavytrack" (no space) that has a lot of djent-heavy potential! Give them a listen above!
  • Local musician Tammy Hill is looking for a singer, guitarist, and drummer to start a punk rock band that would play both originals and covers, as per her post on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group on February 19th. If you're interested in trying out, message Tammy above or at this link!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our recap of last night's VM Radio Battle of the Bands opening round later today, with weekend concert previews and our Speak Easy Battle review to follow! Thanks everyone!

Archaics/Danger Cats Concert Preview, Plus More Recent Updates!!

With a new week upon us, we'll touch on news and updates today, so what's on tap? More new jam session videos from one local band, the likely inactive status of another, and some assorted recent notes, but first, here's a preview for a special Tuesday night concert!

Another intriguing new concert from Oh! Right Arm! Promotions goes down TOMORROW at The New American Pub, and it will be headlined by Edmonton garage rock quintet The Archaics! An interesting band that has an old school laid back sound with enough alternative themes to compliment their swinging originals, you should definitely give them a listen and see if they're your cup of tea! Hard rock fans will want to check out the local openers though, and they include local all-female hard rockers The Danger Cats in their first ever New A appearance and last show before their Rotaryfest set on Saturday, and co-promoter Jamie Vincent's hardcore grunge duo Bad Back in their first show since their Cochrane road trip, with both adding their own hard hitting and diverse angles to this Tuesday nighter, so don't miss out! The first SMS-fitting show at The New A of 2014 that we've heard, this 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and 9:00 PM start time tomorrow, so for more details, visit the Facebook event page! Very wide ranging show to be sure, but there's tastes to cover many preferences, so keep it in mind for tomorrow, and here's The Danger Cats at Docks!

Next up, I've reluctantly decided to move local death metal quartet Crimson Crusade to our inactive band links. While not at our one year inactivity threshold yet, the band has been on a declared hiatus since shortly after their Devil's Night show at The Oddfellows Hall last October without a hint of a return, members Robert Sartini and Devon Lucier are largely focused on Pillory now, and Robert himself called Crimson Crusade inactive on his Gorrifier solo project's Reverbnation page, so things don't look good for the near future. Active since early 2010, the band's early lineups made scattered appearances at Soo and Central Algoma venues before firmly engaging in major local shows in late 2012. You may remember them from opening for bands like Skeletonwitch & Warsenal last summer, along with releasing their EP "Upon The Eve Of War", and their Death-inspired sound was a shot of energy into the local scene! I always enjoyed their later sound, and hopefully this isn't the absolute end of them, but best of luck to Devon, both Roberts, Riley, and other ex-members in the future!

We'll close today with some new videos, including more full jam session videos from the aforementioned Bad Back! Uploaded to drummer Nathan Sauve's new YouTube channel over the last few days each video runs over 58 minutes (with the one embedded below crossing an hour!), so fans of their blistering hardcore and grunge sound should be right at home! The 58 minute jam video isn't labelled to reflect what's played (and the camera died at one point, hence an obvious cut), but the longer "anti-corporation protest jam" below features numerous originals like "Party Bus" and "Shirt Tucker" alongside cover segments from the likes of NOFX and Tom Petty. Similar camera angle and quality as before, and a great material source for Bad Back fans, so watch the full jams above and below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Local/London solo metal project The Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe have been staying busy despite founder Matt Parr's burgeoning band work in Southern Ontario, with 7 new song postings on his Soundcloud page in the past few months! Including some song ideas, an Alexisonfire cover, and a collaborative track, among others, his high production values and progressive talents are clearly visible in his recent work, so check out the new H.M.M. songs above!
  • Pixo Control frontman Michael Mikus got some cool exposure last August when he was interviewed and featured in a Sault Star article by Brian Kelly! Focused around his then-work with The Fever Tops and their appearance at that month's Art In The Parking Lot event, the article also addresses his musical history and AC/DC's influence on him. Nice interview, kudos to Brian for giving Michael the spotlight! (Note that you'll have to watch a short ad video to read this article online.)
  • Defunct local blackened doom metal standouts Woods of Ypres' debut EP "Against The Seasons: Cold Winter Songs From The Dead Summer Heat" is finally getting the Earache Records reissue treatment, completing their run of pressing the band's main back catalog (no word on if they'll ever do anything with their unreleased material or vinyl singles.) CD and vinyl copies with appropriate package deals & colours can now be pre-ordered at this link, with "Woods I" being re-released on July 28th, so check above to get your copies and see what packages are available!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and punk band additions this week! Thanks everyone!

SweetKenny Album Updates, Local Musicians' Short Films, And Much More!!

Let's clear out all remaining backlogged stories for The Sault Metal Scene today, so what's in store? Along with some shorter recent items (including an upcoming EP release), we have some link restorations, a recap of short films by local metal artists that recently recieved their local debut, and first, some big news and updates concerning an upcoming album across the river, so here's what you need to know! (Updated at 7:34 PM)

Dafter, Michigan hard rock solo artist Ken "SweetKenny" Sutton has announced some larger details concerning his upcoming eighth solo album "Ink!", so what should you know? Scheduled for release on March 31st (three weeks from tomorrow), Ken describes it as "a 'heavy rock' fun album" with a mix of instrumentals and songs with vocals, and it features 10 tracks in total. Unlike his last two vocal-featured albums, there are no credited guest performers, though like his 2013 releases, streaming copies of all 10 songs are now available to check out at this link! Now, as we just reviewed SweetKenny's album "Perception" in November, I will hold our next review of one of his albums until May to maintain our minimum 6 month buffer between repeat reviews of the same artist, but if it comes out on time, "Ink!" will be next for his albums! For reference, we haven't reviewed his presently newest album "Cracks In The Wall" from last fall yet, but I chose "Ink!" because it's heavier on average. Watch out for that in two months, and pick up "Ink!" on CDBaby and other sites upon it's release!

Next up, I wanted to give a mention to a pair of short films that were filmed by local metal musicians, as I attended their debut local screenings last night at Algoma University! One was from Frightlight bassist Mike Gingras (a.k.a. Eddie Fright) and Party Island Productions, and it was "The Kid Who Made The Face", the very same film from last summer's benefit show at The Rosie. It's a mockumentary about the fallout from & search for a kid who made such a horrible face at a Toronto mall 25 years ago that it changed the lives of everyone who saw it, including a character played by Mike's brother Dano Villano (of Howling Bullets fame.) Well made and full of amusing moments, it even featured some Frightlight in-jokes (a character wore a band shirt, and another complimented their stature), though Mike told me that no Frightlight music was included because all of their songs are already about movies. The second movie was "The Last Strand" by AlgomA frontman Boyd Rendell (a.k.a. Darby Wigwaus) & 62nd Chamber Productions, so how was that?

It was basically about a night in the life of two mall janitors, one eccentric & crude, the other serious and ill-tempered, until one hits their "last strand". If the credit date is accurate, the movie was filmed before AlgomA's launch, so there's no direct band references (though bassist Kevin Campbell has a small role as a mall employee.) It was a well made movie too with an interesting contrast of characters, and a nice familiar setting, though the audio sounded distorted for much of it. It was nice to get to see Mike & Boyd's hard work pay off, and look for physical copies of them in the coming months!

Also today, I wanted to let you guys know of a couple more restored MySpace links to our listings on the site, thanks to the website's recent revivals of old photos and videos! That said, I'm glad to return defunct Sault Ontario concert agency Big Voiced Records & former Sault Michigan studio Klusterfunk Productions to our "Other Local Metal Links" sections! That said, I opted not to restore the links for Adamantium Productions, the Bell Border Jam, Hitman Productions, Infamous Productions, idioRECORDS, Lucky Limb Studios, The Mistresses of Metal, or The Satisfied Frog, as they lack videos or relevant detailed photos, so their restoration would depend on MySpace bringing back profile information. Big Voiced Records was local musician Jeremy Hannah's former hardcore concert promotion agency, and their MySpace page is full of concert posters from 2007 & 2008 like this one, while Klusterfunk Productions worked with artists like Clownsack during their mid-2000s heyday. It's great to restore some old content to our links, even if just in two cases, so check the above links for more old/new info, and stay tuned in case there's more!

Finally, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

  • Local death metal standouts The Bear Hunters will indeed play at this year's Sewer Swampstravaganza at The Oddfellows Hall on May 3rd, as confirmed on the Facebook event page yesterday! The fifth confirmed band, their addition (and RedD Monkey's hiatus) will make them the only act to play at all 4 Swampstravaganzas. Great addition as expected, and stay tuned for further lineup updates!
  • The now-London based djent metal project Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe has uploaded a handful of short clips and breakdown samples onto their Soundcloud page in the last few weeks! Though unfinished, all have promise and brutality, so even though Matt moved down south, give his very solid new audio previews a look above, along with older material!
  • Though a post on the Facebook event page post yesterday by singer J.D. Pearce indicated that local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades would release their debut EP at this Saturday's Anvil show at The Canadian Nightclub, he revealed on our Facebook page tonight that there was a "snag" in production, and they're now aiming for an April release. Disappointing, but look for some new originals from them on Saturday regardless!

That's all for today, but stay tuned TOMORROW for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! Thanks everyone!

Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe EP Review!!

It's now time for our 56th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene (and second of the year), and this month, we'll be taking a look at the self-titled debut EP from local/London instrumental metal solo project The Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe! Suddenly released in December, this album is a collection of some of their best and recent original material from between 2011 & 2013. Self-recorded and produced, the Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe is represented by guitarist Matthew Parr (who also supplies drum programming), while Ree Zheng is credited as providing guest vocals on the first track. A short EP with just 7 songs at 20 minutes in length, this EP is only available digitally via their BandCamp page on a "name your price" model (similarly to Insipid Brutality & The Strange Coyotes' albums), so while you can download it free, buy the whole thing to support Matt's work! Also, each song title below is linked to it's direct BandCamp link. Now, let's begin this month's CD review with a look at the first song!

Named "Chugga Chugga Woo Woo", this is the H.M.M. EP's shortest song at just 33 seconds in length. The title is screamed by guest Ree Zheng on two occasions, but the rest is a short djent metal original that has a nice technical crunch to it that reminds me of bands like Meshuggah, but it's too short to stand on it's own as more than just a preview of later songs on the EP. "All Roams Lead To Roads" follows it as a longer and more substantial start to this album, maintaining a slower but still heavy pace with it's djent/technical metal sound. More melodic with the guitar work, Matt's skills are on nice display here, and the drum programming adds well to everything! If anything, this song is also shorter than it could be too, and it ends somewhat abruptly, but it's got more of what you'd expect musically, and his guitar skills are very hard to question!

Third is another brief track, the 0:49 second version of "Backpack", which has a lower groove that gives this song a darker and more driving feel, but just when it seems to be gaining traction, it fades away out of nowhere. I would have been curious to see where "Backpack" went had it been longer, but as it sits, it's also too short to stand alone despite how well it was doing. Fourth is "Whatever", which makes the most of it's added length with some extra dramatic flourish and quality djent riffing, but for almost the whole time, the song felt like it was bridging to vocal verses that weren't there, and at times, the song was slightly repetitive. Maybe throw in more of a guitar solo? Matt's guitar skills are still on solid display, the drum track fits, and the ending made sense compared to the song's structure, so it's definitely a highlight mid-way through this EP!

Song #5 is "Summit", which has a more upbeat heaviness while still employing the chugging djent riffs, and I really like the faster riffing and groove in the middle! This song doesn't rock the boat from what we experienced earlier, but the progressive metal attack flows well, and as there's similar satisfaction from the prior tracks, it's hard to say too much bad about it! If anything, the ending comes from out of nowhere again, but "Summit" is definitely one of this EP's better tracks! That's followed by an untitled track (co-written by ex-Crimson Crusade guitarist Brock Pinder) which is also the longest on the EP, and it opens with a melodic waving guitar riff that helps separate it from earlier tracks, before unleashing into a hard charging riff with more of a general melodic sound with djent riffs more muted. I like the variance here to separate it from it's surrounding songs, and the added melody is welcome (including the closest yet to an actual guitar solo), but it's unclear how much Brock's input gave to the differences. Myself, I think I prefer the longer djent tracks, but I welcome the change!

The H.M.M. EP closes with the second version of "Decadent & Depraved", which starts with a soft building intro that's led by the programmed drums (which sound good, but are the only time on the EP that they sound fake.) In fact, the whole song takes on this low and more reserved tone, and it strikes me as a song that would be a drummer showcase if there was one, as the guitar work and melodies are too laid back and muted to have a large impact. Overall, it's a well composed song, but it doesn't end the EP with a bang, and it's somewhat anticlimactic. So, what are my final thoughts on the Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe's EP? I think it's a very promising first foray into album releases from this very talented local guitarist, and if Matt Parr can build on what he did here, he'll be a guitarist to watch no matter where he's based out of! Djent isn't a style we've gotten a lot of in the Soo, and he handles the chugging progression of it very well on his originals, putting time signatures to solid use, and his drum programming was solid!

However, the H.M.M. EP did have repetitive stretches, too many songs with abrupt endings, and the two sub-1:00 songs felt like unfinished tracks left in for the final product. Also, guitar solos would have been nice to contrast everything, and I am curious to hear how this material would sound with a full singer and/or bassist. It should be noted that earlier this month, Matt moved back to his hometown of London, and that's a loss of a diamond in the rough for the Soo, as he has real gifts as a guitarist, and I hope he can get into a band and take his skills and The Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe to the next level! As it stands though, this EP is a successful toe in the water for his album release output, so pick it up at the above links, and hear more newer material at this link! As for our next CD review, we might actually have to review an archive CD next month for the first time since last April due to a dry slate of major new hard rock/metal albums (unless I get a copy of Telephone & Address' EP in the next few weeks), but a few heavier bands with album sessions in the works are playing live next month.

If I don't have a brand new metal/hard rock album available for review by the end of next month, I'm leaning towards a long overdue review of Woods of Ypres' "Allure of the Earth" vinyl single from 2009, but I'll note that regardless of if a new album from them comes out in March, we won't review a new album from either Mike Haggith or SweetKenny, as it's too soon from our last CD review of theirs, but both are likely for the spring, and Woods will be out if another performer with an archive metal album that we haven't reviewed plays locally next month. Regardless, stay tuned for our next CD review next month, and for concert previews TOMORROW! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), A New Album Release, And More!!

Just in case a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT popped up, I had stories at the ready for tonight, and one did, so we have a surprise second post tonight! Along with the latest from a local label and some new concert videos, we have details on a recent new album release, and leading off, TONIGHT'S new show announcement, so read on below for what you need to know, and check out this month's Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on The Lumbermen in the post below this one!

As possibly expected, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will continue his newest weekly concert arrangement with another unplugged show at The Harp Pub & Grill TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, Tym only officially confirmed tonight's show a couple hours ago on it's Facebook event page. Tonight's event will be Tym's fourth straight Friday nighter at the former Madison's Pub since this newest weekly arrangement began, and hopefully his acoustic metal & hard rock covers entertain patrons at this central concert venue once again tonight! Like his other Harp shows, TONIGHT's gig will have no announced cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and a 10:00 PM start time. For more details, visit the above links! Despite the very late confirmation, it's nice to see Tym continuing this regular weekly run, and I'll have to stop in one of these Fridays! Go check out Tym TONIGHT if you can, and for a preview, here's Tym covering Heart at The Service Grill!

Next up, we have a new digital album release to make note of today, as local/London metal solo project The Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe released a self-titled album on Bandcamp last weekend! A collection of instrumental compositions by project leader Matt Parr, the album has 7 songs, though two are under 50 seconds in length, an artist named Ree Zheng is credited on the first song, and the untitled sixth song was co-written by former Crimson Crusade guitarist Brock Pinder. Like fellow local metal band The Strange Coyotes' debut album, this is for sale on a "name your price" model, so while you can download it for free, I'm sure Matt wouldn't object to purchases of it, and doing so would support his material! The songs on the album join a number of other assorted works-in-progress recordings on his SoundCloud page, including a cover of Yelawolf's "Pop The Trunk" and two untitled songs. I have yet to hear the new Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe album, but given that it is on sale, it's definitely a planned CD review on the site, but when?

Not next month, as I have Pillory's new album slotted to kick off 2014, but an H.M.M. review could come as early as February depending on a successful release of Telephone & Address' "Rotten EP" at tomorrow night's Algonquin Pub concert that I'm going to. Either way, an early 2014 review is certain, so keep an eye out, and trust me, Matt's a very talented guitarist, so message him at the above links if you're interested in adding him to your band!

Also on the docket, newer local hard rock quartet The Danger Cats have some new Facebook videos online from their X-Mess concert appearance at LopLops Lounge last week! Uploaded on Sunday, the videos confirm that singer Summer Snow-Leopard was back for the event, so these are our first glimpse at the band's full new quintet lineup, though it's hard to compare to prior shows yet given the uniqueness of this one. The videos include a cover of The Ramones' "I Just Want To Have Something To Do" (featuring Summer on lead vocals) and, as embedded below, an original (I think) named "Wanted Man", with the latter featuring Kate Kougar on lead vocals, and guitarist Paula Panther playing the cowbell and tambourine instead. The videos have good angles of the band (albeit at very different perspectives), and while I do think the girls benefit being plugged in, they sound good! Summer needs more work on her stage presence though, and on The Ramones cover, you may recognize Hydra's Teeth bassist Benn Garside dancing in front of the camera for much of it, which is fun! Check out their "Wanted Man" performance below, and more at the above links!

Finally for today, here's the latest from local goregrind label Blood Shed Productions! Updates have been sparse over the last few weeks from their metal acts, but in their most recent Facebook page posting from earlier today, owner Ringsnaps Gibson acknowledged that Bloodshed activities "are going to be a bit delayed", partially due to the sudden passing of his brother Justin earlier this week. Though not a musician as far as I knew, Justin was integral in helping out Tyler and the label, as well as transporting gear for gigs, and those close to the Blood Shed umbrella are definitely feeling the loss. I never knew Justin, but our condolences definitely go out to the Gibson family and the label at this trying time, especially with the news breaking right before Christmas. Also in the post, Ringsnaps announced that going forward, metal duo Brutaly Fatal (who he recently joined on drums) will be drastically changing focus and will be playing little to no grind or death metal material going forward.

A reason for that shift wasn't announced, but it does come following the most recent Brutaly Fatal jam session video on the label's YouTube channel, which shows Austin McCrea and Ringsnaps playing a funk rock song. Is this the band's new direction, or just random experimentation? We'll find out in 2014 hopefully, so stay tuned for updates from them and other Blood Shed metal artists!

That's all for today, but I'll see you guys TONIGHT at The Algonquin Pub for Garden of Bedlam and Destroilet! Thanks everyone!

Two New Local Bands, Plus Some New Song Postings!!

Even when you think you're low on new stories, more turn up, partially thanks to a pair of new band discoveries! I was aware of both before, but I only just discovered full online pages for each just recently. Those are joined by some new song uploads, so as always, read on below for what you need to know! (Yes, I'm aware of a couple show announcements from recent days, but I'm awaiting confirmation of a public venue before covering them on here. Stay tuned!)

New local classic/hard rock cover quartet Glitch finally have an online presence via the launch of their new Facebook group, so we can now add them to our band links! Actually, the group has been around since the end of September, but it's privacy setting was only changed to "open" this morning. Of course, this is the new band featuring Sneaky Pete singer/drummer Mike Oakley & bassist Sean Berlinguette alongside Tripod The Dog/Foothill Road alum Mark Oliverio on vocals & guitar, and Lion Ride alum Marco Pedalino on guitar, though each member is credited for at least partial vocals on Facebook. As you may remember from their live debut at The Rockstar Bar last month, Glitch are self-described as a "party band" on their group and are emphasizing that angle, but each band member has experience in past hard rock bands, so you know they'll have a solid amount of hard edged material in store! Aside from photos from their first show, there's not a whole lot up yet (no new show announcements either), but keep an eye out for more, and they're now in our active Sault Ontario band links!

The other new band addition is one we just alluded to yesterday, as local guitarist Matt Parr's solo project Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe has pages beyond Soundcloud, so we can add them now! In fact, the project's on Facebook, Bandcamp, and Soundclick, among others, so what else should you know on them? Matt has recorded solo material under the Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe moniker since June 2010, but until last summer (I think), he and the project were based out of London, Ontario. Most of his solo music activity has been related to song postings, generally on Soundcloud in recent months, but his pages include album cover mockups, and a variety of unique material ranging from progressive and djent metal to acoustic tracks to even some electronic/MIDI work, with some select material featuring screamed vocals. Matt's a really talented rhythm guitarist with a lot of diversity and skill, and it'd be cool to see him in a full band project in the area, so give his variety of original work a listen at the above links, and remember, click here for his Musicians Wanted Facebook group search for a local band!

We'll close today with new song postings, starting with a new 4 song sampler from local hardcore punk/quintet Destroilet! Five days out from their Big Loonie Bus Show appearance in Echo Bay (yes, the bus WILL happen), this YouTube upload was posted onto the band's YouTube channel earlier today, and it features the first three songs on their self-titled album ("Truly Infected", "R.O.Y.C.", and "Eternal Fire"), along with the seventh track (and first on their original EP) "End Me", covering all but three of the original tracks on the full length disc. Solid material as ever, especially if you love old school hardcore punk from these local veterans, so check out their sampler video below (with plugs and credits at the end!)

Finally for today, here's another new song from local goregrind label/studio Blood Shed Productions' YouTube channel, this time another song from Austin McRae's death metal solo project Brutaly Fatal! Entitled "The Night of 1,000 Nightmares" and from their "Acidic Sky's" demo, this is a longer song than most Blood Shed grind tracks, and while it shows Austin's bass skill well, the vocals aren't as consistent as they have been, and the emptiness from no guitars & drums continues to show. Give Brutaly Fatal's new track a look below, and also visit the Blood Shed YouTube channel to hear Austin cover Beatles and C.C.R. songs!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for either another news post tomorrow, or weekend concert previews and this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles on Thursday! Thanks everyone!
