R.I.P. Tony Hubbard (1955-2023)

I'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of veteran Sault Michigan rock drummer Tony Hubbard, who passed away on Monday at MyMichigan Medical Center (nee the War Memorial Hospital) at the age of 67. You can read his obituary at this link, and his memorial service took place earlier today at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home with a celebration of life following tonight at The Merchants Bar. In lieu of flowers, the Hubbard family would appreciate donations to the Hospice of the E.U.P.. SMS readers who have followed our Sault Michigan and E.U.P. coverage should be familiar with Tony for his work behind the kit with local hard rock cover bands Splitshot (from 2010-2011) and 415E (from 2014-2017), joining his son Chris to perform with both bands, though Tony didn't return to 415E when they relaunched in 2019. You may also recognize Tony from local bands like Stonewall Creation and as a former bandmate of Tim Hatfield's.

Outside of music, Tony was a skilled craftsman who owned Hubbard Interiors, and he was an avid hockey player, a loving husband and father, and a kind man who loved to tell a joke. Tony is survived by his wife Cami, four children (including Chris), three grandchildren, and four siblings. Having lost a parent myself, I can relate to what Chris and the Hubbard family are going through right now, and while public media of Tony's more recent bands was always surprisingly elusive, he was an accomplished drummer and a familiar face for many who frequented the local concert scene in the E.U.P. into the late 2010s. R.I.P. Tony!

After a couple of days of convalescence due to a major cold, we are back with this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, our ongoing monthly feature series spotlighting 1-3 YouTube channels whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, or punk artists and concerts. Channel Summary: Half of Cory's eight videos come from New York hard rock legends Kiss' outdoor concert at Kewadin Casino in Sault Michigan on July 20th, 2007, filming them playing their songs "Let Me Go Rock 'n Roll", "All American Man", and with a channel-topping 53,000+ views, their opener "Detroit Rock City", plus a short clip of Gene Simmons breathing fire on stage. Though the now-11 year old videos aren't very clear in retrospect, the audio holds up well enough via Cory's footage, and Kiss Army diehards definitely loved this concert, as shown with their raucous reception, and this remains one of the better-stacked channels for footage from this show! Cory's last four uploads are personally geared without a musical tie, and they include a firefighting boat landing, a NBC 7&4 news clip, singing Samoan firefighters, and a kindergarten class graduation, with no channel activity visible in almost a year.

Channel Summary: In it's sporadic usage, Tony has focused his channel around some of his local music work, including one video of his old band Midpoint and two of his current band The Killer Hooks.

Why You Should Watch: This will be of the most interest to fans of The Killer Hooks, especially as this could be considered their de facto official channel, while the Midpoint video will definitely pique the interest of local music scene followers from 3 decades back! However, this channel hasn't seen visible usage in the past year, and despite the archive posting of one of Tony's old bands, there's no footage of any of his other former projects, in case that changes your mind on subscribing.

Mr Crowley by Ozzy Osbourne performed by Midpoint: Tony's most popular and first video is of his old local hard rock band Midpoint, who were filmed on tour in Thompson, Manitoba for a local TV show there named "The Pit" back in 1991. Midpoint are represented here by Tony alongside guitarists Keith Davis & Rob Struk, bassist Steve Batenchuk, and drummer Mark Webster. Though the opening is cut off, the cover is well done with very solid guitar (and keytar!) work, but the vocals don't quite have the optimal range compared to the original. Still, seeing rare Midpoint footage is worth a click, let alone out of province! Tony, Keith, and Steve would later collaborate on 1998's "Local Steel" compilation, while Keith would later join Tony in Gsis Murphy.



Dead or Alive As Performed by The Killer Hooks and Crowd: The other two videos on Tony's channel are of his current pop rock cover band The Killer Hooks live late last year, though neither exceeds 70 seconds in length. One is a cover of The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" at a private event, but featured here is their cover of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" at The Rockstar Bar. The Killer Hooks are represented here by Tony and Midpoint bandmate Rob Struk alongside bassist Tony Rota (Touch of Class) and drummer Paolo Erme (Glory Days.) Filmed by a friend of the band named Gillian, this better captures the crowd singing the opening verse than anything, partially due to the vertical camera angle and red lighting, but the performance sounds good overall! However, there are more substantial videos of the band online.

This series will return on or around October 26th with another multi-band month, as the first channel that we randomly selected only had one surviving video, and the second only had 5 videos (all from the same set), so we're tripling up next time! Concert Cancellations, Lots Of Sykotyk Rampage News, And F.A.T.I.L.'s New Video!!

Before we get to the rest of today's news, I just wanted to note that The Suicide Kings' planned concerts this weekend have been cancelled, just one week after their planned Rockstar Bar gigs suffered the same fate. The guys were scheduled to make their Docks Riverfront Grill debut yesterday & tonight, but they cited "a last minute booking issue with Docks" for their cancellation on their Facebook page last night. This may have been partly due to singer Mike Gaetano falling ill, as drummer Ben Boudreau was briefly looking for a fill-in vocalist for the weekend on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group, but they cancelled the shows shortly after. This is really disappointing, especially with the guys having to cancel consecutive concert weekends to start the year, but hopefully they'll play somewhere this month! As of right now, their next announced shows (and now, their real Docks debut) will be on February 9th and 10th, so if nothing else is announced, keep those dates in mind!

With that said, we have some more news to get to on this Saturday afternoon, including our first new audio tracks from a prominent local metal band, confirmation on their current lineup, and a new video from a prominent local metal band, so here's what you need to know!

The Soo's resident blue Chinese metal crash punk band Sykotyk Rampage have been posted two full streaming copies of new albums onto their Reverbnation page earlier this week! Like with their 2011 output, these were visibly delayed from the announced "release date", but it's good to finally start hearing these new songs! These are considered the band's 34th & 35th albums (despite being 30th & 31st in release order), and they're entitled "The Cross" and "Will Do Anything, Seriously?". Featuring 15 & 11 songs respectively, most of these tracks are new to longtime listeners, but a couple of recent live tracks are included (most notably "Hay Zeus" from "The Cross"), and that album seems to have an anti-religion concept, as the cover and song titles would suggest. The band's other 4 planned albums from last year ("Smells Real Good On A Bad Night", "Jonathon, Your Music Sucks!", "Sykotyk Ramp-Age", and "Anal Distruptions") have yet to be posted (save for the song "Roll A Doobie"), and like with their 2011 "Genius Mushrooms" albums, these have yet to be posted for sale.

I haven't heard most of the new songs yet, but if they retain the sykotyk and aggressive bent of albums like "Zombiez" & "22", they should live up to the hype! When the band posts more new material (or makes any new albums available for purchase), I'll let you guys know for sure! One more thing on Sykotyk Rampage: It looks like they've officially made Tony Briglio their permanent bassist, replacing Brian Cattapan. Nothing official was announced to that effect, but Tony's now listed as their bassist on Reverbnation, complete with the nickname "Chastity Boy" to go along with the other members' amusing monikers. Best known previously as a bassist in The Fury, Tony started filling in for Brian (who's lived in Sudbury for a few years now) this summer, which has to have helped with Sykotyk Rampage's quick concert pace in the latter half of 2012 compared to previous years. No word yet on if Tony played anything on Sykotyk Rampage's newest albums, but for what it's worth, Brian is featured in three of their 2012 album covers. Tony's a great fit all around with Sykotyk Rampage, but hopefully we'll see Brian turn up at some future shows as well!

Finally for today, here's a new video from Central Algoma death metal quartet For All That Is Lost! I'm not sure how this got bypassed for so long (I must have thought it was a re-upload), but this performance of their song "Northern Metal" from the Locals Attack show at The Canadian Nightclub on November 26th was posted on the band's YouTube channel two weeks ago! Filmed on a nice camera (albeit with dark lighting), the fi;mer got some nice moving angles of the guys from a high vantage point, and F.A.T.I.L. are at their brutal best here, so give this new-ish video of theirs a look below, and hopefully we'll see them back on stage soon!

The Jamestown Massacre Concert Review!!

Hey guys, here's my review of Thursday night's Jamestown Massacre! I apologize for it being so late (and for missing the Riding Shotgun show last night), but I was working on an summer geography essay for most of yesterday evening, and that took up a lot of my time. We're back on track now though, so let's discuss this concer!

First, I'll note that there was a disappointingly low turnout. I don't think there was even 20 people in the bar itself for the headliners, but I know it was nearing the holiday weekend, so it could have been worse! The opening band was local punk trio Redundant, who I hadn't seen live since the Ypres Metal Fest in April, and in the interim, they seemed to add a lot more originals into their setlist than I'd remembered. They sounded good, and if you were a fan of frontman Justin Langlois' original work with The Scary Uncles, these will be familiar and easy to get into! They also played some well received covers, including some amusing asides to Eminem & TLC material, and it showed their sense of humour well! Talentwise, Redundant gave exactly what I expect out of them, and bassist James White didn't let his birthday get in the way of playing as good as he ever does. I also liked the "R.I.P. Tony Sly" shirt that Justin wore, nice of him to honour the late No Use For A Name frontman! It was good to see Redundant live again, and hopefully it won't take 4 months for me to see them tear through some well done punk covers & originals (plus some fun on-stage banter) again!

Next up was the original crash band themselves, Sykotyk Rampage, but they looked slightly different thanks to the absence of bassist Brian Cattapan, who I believe couldn't come home for the show on Thursday. However, instead of playing without a bassist (like at the Zombie Walk afterparty), Sykotyk Rampage instead enlisted a guest bassist for their set, that being Tony Briglio, who you may recognize from the inactive "don't call them punk" trio The Fury! It was good to see him back on stage after so long, and he seemed to fit in well with Sykotyk Rampage in Brian's place! Their set was somewhat abbreviated from a usual Sykotyk Rampage concert, with only a couple of non-drinking songs (including "Acreage") and a bunch of songs to have a beer with, like "Roll A Doobie", "Drinking on the Weekend", and a well-received cover of Flogging Molly's "Fuck You, I'm Drunk" that this show's booker J.D. Pearce joined in on! For the most part, Sykotyk Rampage's improvised mix of punk, metal, alternative, and blues sounded as creative and entertaining as usual, and Paul Becker was a workhorse on drums and singing, but I did notice that guitarist Dirk Becker didn't sing a whole lot, and that includes backing vocals. Sore throat, or just not enough songs? Either way, they had fun and it was good to see them back!

Co-headlining The Jamestown Massacre was local punk/classical trio RedD Monkey, and they sounded as energetic and unique as ever. Their Canadian tour definitely didn't sap their energy, and they seemed happy to be home! Playing most of the songs from their CDs "Thought Control Tower" and "All Baroque" along with their cover of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" and some non-album originals, they shown the high tempo speed and punk intensity that we've come to love, and the fans that were there definitely enjoyed RedD Monkey's set! If anything, frontman Steve Mozarowski's voice did seem a bit strained at points, but that's my only major complaint. Steve's guitar work was often blisteringly fast, Joe Bumbacco's drumming kept up well and set great pacing, Pete Mozarowski still plays the cello better than anyone I've seen locally, and even when rapping about four dozen cookies, it fits with their sound! As always, I enjoyed RedD Monkey's set, and they're definitely one of my favourite active punk bands in the Soo!

And your main event on Thursday night was Calgary hard rock trio The Shotgun Dolls, and I have to give them props from the start for their cool light setup on stage that actually almost made it look like a different venue altogether! You know a band's good when even a small crowd is overly praising them & calling for an encore, and I can say the same for The Shotgun Dolls, as they delivered a high energy mix of hard rock and punk to who remained inside The Rosie on Thursday, and though the Lion Ride comparisons I'd made earlier in the week were visible, they had a bit more vocal freedom and some heavier guitar work to compliment their array of original material! Turner Midzain had solid vocal control and guitar skills throughout the night, Mike Badmington' bass playing was top notch, and though drummer Ty Gogal looked like he was melting under the lights, he kept up well on drums! The guys seemed happy to play here, and their songs definitely had a lot of aggression and attitude without getting too over the top, and I just wish they could have shown their sound off to more people. Great closing set by The Shotgun Dolls, and hopefully they're back in town soon!

Overall, this was a fun concert, if under-attended, and it never hurts to a see a show with more of a punk flavour! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Fifth Way & Peril), A Band Breakup, And More News From Sault Michigan!!

Hey guys, here's a special auto-post while I'm rocking out at the Ypres Metal Fest, and it's 100% devoted to the Sault Michigan metal scene! Tomorrow, I'll work hard to get videos of all 12 bands from tonight's show online with a review going up likely early Monday, but for now, you Yoopers should enjoy the news we've got tonight, including LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for Kewadin Casino over the next few months, a local band's breakup, a bassist departure, and Half A Man's latest updates, so here's what you need to know!

According to Kewadin Casino's Facebook page, Detroit hard rock standouts Fifth Way will return to Sault Michigan on April 27th! Though we had heard about their planned concert weekend with Brimley metallers Half A Man that same weekend (more on them in a bit), this show doesn't appear to be directly linked to those plans, as Fifth Way will open for platinum selling Arizona pop rock band The Gin Blossoms that night at The Dreammaker's Theater! Best known for hits like "Hey Jealousy" & "Follow You Down", they're not really a hard rock band, but they have lots of well known songs, and they're worth a listen! As you may remember, Fifth Way feature Rudyard native & LSSU grad Zak Stelmaszek on guitar, and this show will be their first local concert appearance since the Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Festival in July 2010, so this is a long time coming! Also, it'll mark their current lineup's first local gig, as Mike McMann & Chris Castro replaced Nicholas Cole-Klaes & Dave Reingardt on bass & drums respectively last year. Fifth Way will be sure to deliver a great set of original material, including songs from their upcoming new album "Sacrifice", so keep their local return in mind later this month!

Tickets are $32.50 for this concert, and you can buy them at 1-800-KEWADIN, this location, or the Kewadin box office. The show starts at 7:00 PM, it's all ages presumably, and there are still tickets in the second row and back available, so act now if you wanna go! I'm aware that this show is probably better suited to Gin Blossoms fans, and Fifth Way may be too heavy as openers, but they'll leave their mark for sure at this show, as they did in 2010 opening for Tesla and Three Doors Down at Kewadin! Stay tuned for more on Fifth Way's next local shows as they come in!

The other new shows come courtesy of new additions to the schedule at The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino, as per Kewadin's entertainment page! One was for a planned Swayze Train concert weekend in July, but that's likely off now (more on that in a second), and they also confirmed that Trail's End will ONLY be playing there on Friday, April 20th due to a planned screening of UFC 145 in The Rapids Lounge on the 21st. Disappointing, but they'll be back for much more, and the Jones/Evans fight should be good! However, one new metal concert weekend was added to the Rapids Lounge schedule, as Charlevoix metal trio Peril will return to Sault Michigan on July 20th and 21st! Almost four months after their latest local stops last weekend, they'll be sure to deliver a solid weekend of metal and hard rock covers and originals this summer, so keep these shows in mind this July! They're both likely 21+ events, there's no announced cover charge, and 10:00 PM start times are likely. Check the above links for more details! Peril are always a fun time with some great covers in store, so don't miss them this summer! Stay tuned for much more in new Sault Michigan concerts as they roll in!

Thirdly for today, here's some surprising news, as Sault Michigan hard rock quintet Swayze Train have disbanded. The news was broken Thursday evening on the band's official Facebook page, where they said that they were "at an end" and thanked everyone for the support during their run. A reason for the band's demise has not been publically made, but the tone of what I've read doesn't indicate an acrimonious split. As a result, the band's scheduled Rapids Lounge concerts through July are likely cancelled, barring a new band with common members picking them up in the interim. Swayze Train had been active since succeeding members Melissa Strand & Tony Rogers' earlier acoustic band Electric Motor Fish at the first annual LemmaFest last June, and have since rocked the Sault Michigan and St. Ignace areas over the past 9 months to solid reviews, despite never posting video footage that I've seen. I'm honestly really surprised to see Swayze Train break up, as they had a very talented lineup and I'd heard almost universally positive things from their live shows, but this is likely the best internal option for right now for them. Best of luck to Melissa, Mike, Scott, Tony, and Tyler in the future, and hopefully they stay active in local music in the near future (or at least post some old Swayze Train videos finally!)

While we're on the subject of ends for bands featuring bassist Tony Rogers, I'll note that when he confirmed Swayze Train's end on his personal Facebook page Thursday afternoon, he also announced that he'd left Clownsack, the popular local funk/hard rock band where he'd performed as Slappy since their inception. In referring to leaving both bands, he said he was just "clearing the slate", and later added that Clownsack were still around, "just not funny anymore", so read into that however you want. Clownsack have not officially confirmed Tony/Slappy's departure, but note that they haven't updated their online pages since August, so imminent confirmation of the news isn't a guarantee. It's really disappointing to see Tony leave the Clownsack ranks, as his considerable bass skills helped define Clownsack's sound, especially on "Rotten Candy", but hopefully he gets into a new band at some point in the near future. He'd definitely be an asset, that's for sure! As for Clownsack themselves, there's big clown shoes to fill, but hopefully they return to activity soon in general! It's been too long since their last concert and the "Funny Farm" release, so fingers crossed that we see them back at it in 2012! Stay tuned for more as I hear of it!

And finally for this all Sault Michigan post, here's the latest news from Brimley metal quartet Half A Man! No, we haven't heard concrete details about their planned concert weekend with Fifth Way on April 27th & 28th yet, but the Gin Blossoms gig for Fifth Way doesn't necessarily mean that they're off. If I hear anything definitive, I'll let you guys know! The rest of the band's recent updates have related to Half A Man's long delayed debut demo release, which they revealed some big news on last month on their Facebook page. It has a planned May release, it will feature their songs "Drunk", "Die In Disgrace", "Cripple", "Bad Way", and a newer track named "Release Me", and it will not feature new singer Dillion Semasky, instead having guitarist Erik Rintamaki handling lead vocals as he originally did with Half A Man. A reason for that wasn't publically disclosed to my knowledge, though they hinted at a new recording location, so that could be linked. I'm still curious to hear Dillion sing on Half A Man's originals, but Erik singing will at least be familiar to their earlier incarnations! Stay tuned for more from Half A Man at the above links, and even if the April shows don't go down, they'll be at LemmaFest this summer, so Half A Man will be back in full force before you know it!

Weekend Concert Previews, Hammerspace Lineup Changes, And More!!

One more post before I head to Detroit this weekend for some family stuff, so fair warning that posts may come slowly this weekend depending on my busyness. So today, we have previews of this weekend's known metal concerts, news on a local solo project and some lineup changes in an area band, plus a band deletion. So let's begin with your local concert previews for this weekend!

All of the metal/hard rock shows this weekend that I know of are in Sault Ontario, and we'll start with Turner Up, who return to the stage once again this weekend for a pair of shows at Foggy Notions! The local classic hard rock cover quintet return there tomorrow night and Saturday night for two more concert sets, both of which are taking place at 10:30 PM. Both shows will have a likely $3 cover, as is the typical Foggy's policy, and you must be 19 to enter. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! So if you wanna be taken "back to school" by Turner Up this weekend, Foggy's is the place to be tomorrow and Saturday! Should be fun, sucks that I can't make it this time around! Meanwhile, Saturday night marks a notable return for a local band, as Caveman Morrison make their return to the live stage for just the second time since April! This time however, they'll be playing at a rather unique show, as they play support to... a hypnotist? Yes, they'll be directly supporting Tony Lee, XXX Hypnotist on Saturday night at The Outback at one of Sault College's Frosh week events! Click the above link for more on his work, which is entertaining but certainly not family friendly. The XXX was a giveaway, right? As for Caveman Morrison, this is also notable in that it's their debut concert featuring new drummer Johnny Belanger, who replaced Jeff Richards in the band last month. You'll also recognize Johnny from his work in The Bear Hunters, D.O.T.H., and other defunct local bands! By all accounts, the new Caveman lineup is bound to impress, so consider seeing them on Saturday! This show will be at 8:00 PM on Saturday night at The Outback, with Caveman Morrison playing from 8:30 PM until before 10:00 PM, when Tony Lee hits the stage. Tickets are $8 in advance on campus, or $10 at the door.

It is ALL AGES, but I believe that non-students have to come as a guest of a Sault College student and be signed in. If I'm wrong on that, let me know! For more details, visit this location! Sounds like a fun and unique show, and I can't wait to see Tym, Dutch, and Johnny in action! Sadly, it can't be this weekend, but I'll definitely be at Foggy's next weekend to see them when they play two dates then! Now to some assorted news stories to cap off this post, and we'll start with significant lineup changes in a Sault Michigan metal band. It was announced on Monday that local progressive metal band Hammerspace have parted ways with singer Logan Reed and bassist Tim Padoba. According to a posting on the band's MySpace blog, Hammerspace let Logan go due to "style differences", and guitarist John Bergeron will be taking over on vocals full time for the band. It was added that Tim quit Hammerspace, apparently from thoughts about a less than ideal practice schedule. So the band is now comprised of John Bergeron on vocals and guitar, fellow guitarist Justin Smith, and former Bent Rollercoaster drummer Paul Burns, with a search now ongoing to find a new bassist. Shame to see Logan and Tim gone, but hey, hopefully this change is for the better! They're a solid band, and here's hoping they're back gigging real soon! Finally, here's a note from a local solo project that we've been following for a while now! Remember, I try to pay attention to local solo metal artists who treat their solo work as an actual musical project rather than just demos and fiddling around as such. That being said, remember April Eyes, the solo band from Bear Hunters/Lorax/Eyes Set Fire guitarist Mitch Sirie? Well, he's made some updates concerning his solo work, so here's what you should know! Firstly, he's changed the name of his solo stuff again, now calling it Animas. I still think By The Gods was the best name he had, but hey, to each their own! That being said, Animas have a new solo song on their MySpace page, named "Fall"! It's an acoustic instrumental, but it's well played, and shows that he can play other stuff effectively! Check it our at the above links and see what you think, but remember, if you want something heavy, the other two songs on his page bring it, so check them out too! Lots of potential here, fingers crossed that Mitch and Animas have more in the works!

And to cap today's post, just a housecleaning note concerning a removal from our band listings on the SMS. I deleted the MySpace page for Sault Michigan metal band Dillusional Greed earlier today, after the page quietly had all band information erased from it, or made private. The band was just a solo project to my knowledge, but had been around since at least June 2007, and had some bio info and possibly an audio track. I looked for a replacement page for Dillusional Greed but couldn't find one, so I opted to remove their page from the SMS, but if I find a new page for them, I'll surely re-add it!
