Lion Ride Concert Review & An Apology For The Recent Lack Of Posts!!

Hey guys, I really apologize for the lack of activity over the last few days, especially considering that this past weekend had two shows I attended for reviews on the site, there was two Monday night concerts we couldn't properly preview (sadly), AND our big 4th anniversary plans yesterday. My computer finally became uncooperative enough where we basically had to bring it to Staples yesterday morning, despite my plans for the 4th anniversary surprises and the Titan's Eve show contest. We managed though, and I did unveil my announcements briefly yesterday, so at least you guys know. But I still want to detail the changes, the reasons, and the new stuff, but we'll do that tomorrow. Now that my computer's RAM problems are fixed, we can get back to work, and we'll get to each scheduled post in the order I intended, starting with my review of Saturday night's Lion Ride concert at The Rockstar Bar! How was it? Find out below, and my apologies if I missed anything from the show over the weekend. As for the new SMS page design? Stay tuned tomorrow for more on that!

So the concert started slightly later than I expected, and had a higher than expected cover too ($7 for a locals only bar show?), but I knew we'd get our money's worth! Despite The Rockstar Bar's advance coverage, local roots/folk duo The Boot Hill Crooners were indeed the opening band for the show, and though their style of music is way out of my typical preferences, they left a good first impression! Consisting of singer/multi-instrumentalist Sheldon Jaaskelainen and his brother Marshall on the upright bass, you may recognize them as bandmates of Lion Ride's Mikey Lion in Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide, so they are better opener fits than you might expect! This was my first time seeing them, and they delivered a mix bag of songs ranging from original roots songs to some more country based tracks, to select covers, including Nirvana's "All Apologies" and a curious folk rendition of House of Pain's "Jump Around"! Yes, I say folk, they didn't rap once but kept the lyrics intact. They have clear talent, and knew their way around numerous instruments and types of songs, with Sheldon navigating from guitar to banjo to violin to harmonica, even playing some percussion throughout! Not my thing, but very talented, and they have a nice on stage rapport and humour level!

And I'd be remiss if I didn't miss the bachelorette party that were at The Rockstar Bar during The Boot Hill Crooners' set. Very lively bunch of women, and the drunken dancing and fun they were having sure gave life to the dance floor! Now the easily offended might have been put off by their "suggestive" paraphernalia, particularly a "well endowed" blow up doll, but they had fun, and The Boot Hill Crooners had a good sense of humour about it, even as said blow up doll and a partier joined them on stage to help out! The party bolted between sets though, and once they were gone, the attendance was actually fairly average. This reminded me of Lion Ride's show at The Canadian over the May 2-4 weekend last year, where they had an uncharacteristically low attendance due to a show over a camping weekend. Similarly, the band blamed the attendance on camping, this time due to Canada Day weekend. I'd rather rock out than be stuck in the woods, but hey, that's just me. Hopefully Lion Ride don't book a vacation weekend like this again, cause now they've been hit hard by it twice in their last four local shows!

As for Lion Ride's actual set, they were on fire as always, and it's great to see that despite a low crowd, they come to rock at their best no matter who shows up! Musically, they sounded on par with their show in March, and that's a very good thing, as they sounded great then! It was kinda nice to not be so packed amongst people, but the environment was less with a smaller crowd. Lion Ride launched into a fast paced set of classic originals like "Trust" and "Sneak Attack", newer songs like "Snail Trail" and "Bang Bang, Bye Bye", and yes, covers of Motley Crue, Kiss, and The Pointer Sisters! I felt their set ran kinda short compared to some local bands I've seen lately, and I figure they could stand to lengthen it a bit if they threw in songs like "Lock Me In" and "Lazer Lover". That said, they did debut an untitled new song at the show, which sounded very promising, though I think I'm still partial to "Snail Trail" as my favourite newer original! The band's mix of speedy hard rock and punk swagger continues to serve them well, and from Marco & Marky Lion's proficient shredding to Mikey Lion's perfectly suited punk inspired singing, the band had no major flaws! Anything I'd have to say is minor, like that Cobra Carmander needs to make his presence felt more, he always seems buried behind the three Lions on the stage.

Very entertaining concert overall, despite the lower attendance, but as Lion Ride put it during the show "Fuck camp!" Their shows are always a fun blast of energy, and they went nonstop from start to finish, and I couldn't ask for more out of them! Great quality, and a bit different than usual, though I'm surprised Mikey isn't in very many. Also, I noticed that Curt hinted a possible Lion Ride show in the fall? Fingers crossed! News From As It Stands, Life's Eclipse, Lion Ride, And This Week's Classic Video!

Hey guys, here's some more local metal news & notes to kick off the month of May, including the latest audio from Life's Eclipse, photos from Lion Ride, news from As It Stands, and this week's classic video! Before we begin, remember that tomorrow is May 2nd, so it'll be time for another "Where Are The New Albums?" post! Stay tuned for that, but now, it's time for the news! (Edited Tuesday, 2:03 AM)

Eckerman, Michigan metal quartet Life's Eclipse are staying active following their surprise resurgence last month, so here's what you should know! Firstly, the band now has a Facebook page, and you can check it out at this location! The band hasn't posted too many updates to the page since launching it on April 19th, but they did announce that they've been working on some recordings recently, and they posted some samples on the Werehold Records YouTube channel on Thursday! The samples are respectively 46 and 61 seconds long each, and neither has vocals finished yet, but they're very promising! One is a clip of the song "Cell Differential" from an older album of theirs named "Invasion". Unfinished, so it looks like they're adding vocals and getting it complete for fans, click here to listen! Heavy with a melodic touch, I can't wait to hear a longer version with singing! Of the two clips though, the one below is even better in my opinion! "Out Of The Cold" (from the "Deeper In The Woods" album) is brutal and very fast, and a longer sample to boot, so definitely check it out! I continue to be impressed with these guys, they're one the Sault Michigan area's hidden gems, so check out the above links for more, and here's the "Out Of The Cold" sample!

Next up, here's the latest news from Sault Ontario hardcore quintet As It Stands! They have 3 big updates here, so let's go in the order they mentioned them in their most recent Facebook page posting. Firstly, the band has announced that they are hitting the studio after their next two local shows to record their first full length album! This would be their third release overall though, following two out-of-print EPs from the mid-2000s (if you have them or the mp3s, LET ME KNOW!) I wouldn't be surprised if they're back in Stoney Creek for these sessions, and it'll be interesting to see if they re-record the songs they did at Stereo Soul Studios last fall for this CD, or add them as is. Hopefully this comes together, I'll absolutely wanna hear the finished product! Secondly, the band confirmed their next two concert dates, both taking place next week, including one new addition! One's the Rosie metal night on the 12th, but the other is at Foggy Notions the next day! The band didn't give further details, but I'm fairly certain they're opening for Toronto melodic death metal band Hallows Die that night, which was a previously confirmed concert already. Good to hear, they'll do well on this lineup!

The other news? They'll be on Shaw TV (Channel 10 for Shaw Cable users) this week for a performance of their original song "Conception"! The station's local news & videos are on a frequent rotation, so it'll be easy to find it with patience. With this and a recent RedD Monkey TV appearance (awesome for them as well), it's great to see some form of local TV exposure for local bands, so definitely keep an eye out for the AIS feature this week! Big things are brewing for As It Stands, stay tuned for all of that (and more) in the coming weeks!

Thirdly today, here's the full photo shoot that Lion Ride had with Curt O'Neil early last month! We'd previously only seen one sneak peek photo, but there's lots more to share now, including a nice write-up from Curt about the band and the photo shoot! Curt heavily praised the band for their sound and energy, and wrote about how much fun he had during the shoot, which took place at The Algonquin Hotel, site of The Rockstar Bar, where they played their most recent local show early last month. Photos of all types were taken in locations ranging from a boiler room to a bathroom to outside, including humourous and serious shots for all to enjoy! Great work as always, Curt's one of the best local photographers you're liable to find, and his work speaks for itself! And finally, here's our latest (and long overdue) weekly classic video! Apologies for it being delayed until the next week, I'll have this week's earlier than usual to make it up! With Frightlight taking the stage last week (along with two shows from guitarist Rick White's punk project Motion Carried), it made perfect sense to go back to the Fitswitch days for the first time in this weekly series! This classic video was uploaded by Rick White in November 2009, and it's of Fitswitch playing 3 songs from a 2005 concert at Madison's Pub! The lineup present here includes Rick, his current Frightlight bandmates J.D. Pearce & Kevin Powe, original drummer Larry Mousseau, and bassist Jason Bourcier. Filmed by an attendee and originally posted onto Facebook at http://facebook.com/video/video.php?v=203361591302, it features three full songs from that show: "Bitch Anthem", "Rust Angel" (now a Frightlight staple), and "March Of 1,000 Corpses" (itself making it's live debut.) NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED! I want people to be more exposed to Fitswitch, I was a big fan of theirs, and though their sound has progressed higher in Frightlight, this stuff should be seen!

Good performance, though the presence of alcohol is somewhat obvious. The "Rust Angel" cover is definitely lesser than we're used to from the later Frightlight version, but the other two songs have the classic punk/metal hybrid aggression that we loved in the mid-2000s! Quality's decent too, and HD as well, which is rare for the time! Lots Of Assorted News And Notes From The Last While!!

This is our 25th post of the month already, and at this rate, we could approach last month's post record at this rate! Today's post is largely comprised of older stories that got pushed aside in recent weeks, but is well worth discussing! This includes a cool SMS concept logo, the latest from Lion Ride & Beyond The Surface, some new pages, and kicking things off, a new video! Here's what you need to know!

Veteran local musician Phil Temperao has uploaded a solo song onto his YouTube channel! Unlike the older jam session videos that usually featured him and Dennis Porter, this is a solo song that bears little resemblance to the older Meatplow (or whatever they'll be called next) videos. This is just a song named "Rain" under the project name "Sebastien 6". It features Phil on all instruments save for the lead guitar, which is actually provided by his brother Jose (a.k.a. Jose Wailz), who you may recall as Phil's old Amethyst bandmate! Compared to the more aggressive and industrial tinged songs from the full band, "Rain" is a lighter track that is still hard rocking, and shows off Phil's singing range. The guitar work's solid, but the song can be a bit repetitive, and if you prefer the material from the live videos with Dennis contributing, "Rain" may be slightly underwhelming in tone. It's a solid track though, and it's accompanied with some good shots of Phil and outdoor nature pictures. Recorded at Greentown Digital Studios this year, there's apparently more coming from this solo project, so keep an eye out! Check the above links for more, and here's "Rain"!



Next up, here's some long overdue news on young Pickford hard rockers Beyond The Surface. Firstly, they've announced that lead guitarist Eli Reilly is now be their full time singer going forward in addition to playing guitar, replacing Danielle Petingalo in the band's vocalist position. No reasons have been posted for Danielle's departure, but in all fairness, she hasn't been a credited member of the band since before I heard about them, so it just took a while for official confirmation. I don't know how Eli sounds vocally, but he can't sound too bad! With that said, the band have announced their next live gig, which will be part of a "spring concert" at Pickford High School on May 17th with the school band. I don't know enough about it to call it on the SMS yet as a "public concert", but keep it in mind, especially if you live in Pickford or attend Pickford High! They're a promising young band, and I am curious to hear how they sound in their current incarnation! Stay tuned for more updates at their Facebook page, and I'll try to stay more on top of them in the future!

Thirdly, here's a pair of new Facebook pages from some local metal bands! One isn't really "new", but I only discovered it a few weeks ago, so I gotta mention it. Sault Michigan hard rockers Intrepid (one of the many Guitar Studio rock camp bands) have had a Facebook page since August of 2009, and believe it or not, we've never mentioned it here! The page tells us some interesting details on the band from late 2009-2010, including a number of very brief and often ill-detailed statuses about their next shows, which ranged from local bars to talent shows to the Kewadin Festival! I'd have covered these for sure if I knew about them, but many were ambiguous and only hinted towards potential shows or gigs with no listed venue or date. The page also includes a bunch of live photos, though sadly, no concert video footage. Intrepid haven't updated this page since after a December talent show performance, but if you wanna get caught up on Intrepid, click here! The other news is that Sault Michigan classical metal project Theatre of Night have a Facebook page of their own, and though it only features synched news from their primary Reverbnation page, do check it out, as you'll still find out about their latest news!

Fourthly, do you want some new photos? How's about some new Lion Ride photos? Some professional quality photographs from around the time of their local show earlier this month at The Rockstar Bar are now online, including an extensive slideshow from photographer Jesse Nelson on his blog Family Tree Land! Loads of photos from before and after their concert, including the show itself, are included there, which are great quality but sadly unavailable in high resolution on the page itself. Look out for cameos by members of some prominent local bands and a band member's mother in the front row, for example! The other photos will be coming soon from prominent local photographer Curt O'Neil, who's done some outstanding past work with Lion Ride concert pictures! This time around, he just did a formal photo shoot with the band, I think their first of this type with the current lineup. Though the fruits of this labour aren't visible yet, Curt did post one preview picture, and it's on your left, but click here for full resolution! Nice work, I can't wait to see more, so stay tuned for when they come online!

Finally, here's a cool little custom item I've been holding onto for a while! If you know me well, you'll know that I enjoy the art of logos, be they for sports, companies, or whatever, and I try to utilize appropriate designs in SMS artwork, logos, and page layouts. I'm not a professional, but I do what I can. That said, Destroilet drummer Matt Waples, who is a VERY talented graphic designer with Sonigraphix Design Solutions, sent me a concept for a new SMS logo last month based around the one we debuted in December. I thought now was a good time to share his work with you guys, as he deserves all the credit in the world for the work he does! I'm a fan of logo concepts on sites like Icethetics, so why not inject some of that here? If I remember correctly, I told Matt that this looked great, but it felt more like a Japanese action movie logo than a metal website logo, not that that's a bad thing. I find the M a bit fat and the flipped second S makes it look like "SMZ", but that aside, it's a damn good concept, and I appreciate Matt going out of his way to make this on his own free will! What do you guys think of it? Feedback is welcome, especially with the work Matt puts in! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Who Made Who, Turner Up, And 5150), Plus Hempfest & Lion Ride News!!

Our busy 2011 continues with today's news post, our 18th already this year! Enclosed in today's post are the latest concert photos from a recent major show, the newest bands on this year's Hempfest, and kicking things off, FOUR LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! So here's what you need to know, and check out our latest Defunct Local Band Profile on Nite Wülfe in the post below this one!

We'll go in chronological order for the new shows, starting with one THIS FRIDAY at The Canadian Nightclub! Just a few days after I told you guys that they'd be at Hempfest this year, Ontario-based AC/DC tribute band Who Made Who will return to Sault Ste. Marie for a night of high voltage rock n' roll on Friday night! Apologies for the relative short notice, the band didn't announce it on their pages, and the Facebook event page wasn't posted until the other day. It's great to see Who Made Who back in town, as they're no strangers to Sault Ste. Marie, and they have a very faithful AC/DC sound going for them! So they'll be back at The Canadian on Friday night at 10:00 PM, there will be a $5 cover charge, and you must be 19 to attend. I dunno if I'll be able to make this concert, but when I saw them in 2009, they impressed and entertained, and who doesn't love a night full of AC/DC classics? Speaking of shows this weekend, a local classic hard rock band return to the stage for another weekend of music! That band would be Turner Up, fresh off their well received weekend set at The Rockstar Bar, as they now head to the west end for shows THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY at The Roosevelt Hotel! Again, apologies for the short notice, these were only just announced last night on The Rosie's Facebook page. Like other Turner Up shows, I'd expect both of these to have 19+ age limits, no cover charge, and start times of after 10:00 PM. Check the above links for more details on these shows! Nice to see Turner Up back in the swing of things in 2011, and they'll have a nice mix of classic and newer songs that get heavier as the night gets longer! And, these fill out a nice three day stretch of concerts following Thursday's metal night, so make note of that as well! Stay tuned for more on these and the Who Made Who show as the week continues!

Our final new show tonight is another tribute band making their way to The Canadian Nightclub, but in this case, we have some extra notice. This time around, the tribute band is 5150: The Canadian Tribute To Van Halen, a Toronto based band who will be sure to deliver some great Van Halen classics from both the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar eras on February 19th! The band features members of other notable tribute bands who've played here, like Gunz N' FN' Rosez and Second Coming, so there's talent to be had! I don't think the vocals are a complete match to either David or Sammy, but frontman Steve Stanley can pull it all off very well, so fans of either Van Halen era should be happy! The above link to their website and their Facebook page are my sources for this show. An event page isn't online for me to get definite information on the house rules, but I'd assume this has a 10:00 PM start time, a 19+ age limit, and a cover charge of around $5, probably similarly to the Who Made Who concert on Friday. February 19th is shaping up to be a surprisingly big night of music, with 5150, Maximum RNR, and As It Stands all playing separate shows that night, so definitely circle this date on your calendars! I'll keep you posted when more comes in!

Fourthly tonight, here's the latest lineup news from Hempfest, which returns to it's original home in nearby Ophir, Ontario from August 25th-28th! Three more bands are now on the lineup for this year, adding up to 12 in total now confirmed, and one of these will interest hard rock fans! Actually, this is a band we've covered on here a bit in the past. That band is London hard rock trio Violet Fuse, who feature Sault Ontario native Thom Edwards on drums! We covered them in our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile in June, and they have a nice mix of classic and modern sounds in their original material, so they should fit right in in their first stop in the Sault area! Two more bands have been added to the Hempfest lineup, those being Hamilton ska punk band Lo-Fi and Blind River solo folk artist T.J. Kirby, so click on the links to give them a look as well! These bands join the previously confirmed Frightlight, Half Past, Who Made Who, Misery, 4Ward, The Killin' Time Band, Northern Lights, Scott Huckabay, and Josh Odair on the Hempfest lineup, which promoter Robert Neron says is now full. Good solid lineup, but as always, if something changes, I'll let you know! Check the above links for Hempfest updates and to check out all the confirmed bands!

And finally for today, a ton of new concert photos from local photographer Curt O'Neil from last month's packed Lion Ride concert at The Canadian Nightclub are now online! Preview shots of each band member were originally posted on Curt's website two weeks ago, but he uploaded plenty more this afternoon, and you can check them all out at this location! Assorted News From The Past Week!

Now it's time to clear out the news desk a bit more by sharing a few stories that got lost in the cracks over the past little while. With all those concert reviews and the end-of-year special posts, I am admittedly behind on new stuff, so that explains the high amount of posts so far to start 2011. Things should get back on a normal pace soon, but first, here's some assorted stories from the last week or so! Because all could feasibly be a top story (except the last paragraph), I'll organize our first four in alphabetical order by band name. So, let's get things started, but remember to check out our latest "Where Are The New Albums?" post from this morning immediately below! We'll start with Sault Michigan hard rockers Bad Side, and this is stuff that I had previously referred to in our post where we looked back at 2010, but I never devoted an actual news post section to it. It appears that the band has officially decided to break up. There's never been an official statement to that effect, but the fact that they produced a graphic of a Bad Side tombstone (with the year of death being 2010), that about says it all. Honestly, this isn't too surprising, when you add things up. The band went on a hiatus in late 2009, cancelling scheduled local dates in the process, and following the firing of singer Melissa Krahnke and guitarist Jason Mapes from their radio jobs at Yes FM and The Bear last year, both of them moved from the area. Jason now lives in Nashville, where he's working on a solo album with other former Bad Side members, and Melissa now lives in Pennsylvania, where she works at the the radio station 98.5 KRZ. So their shows this past summer in Milwaukee were basically their farewell gigs, which is odd when you consider that you'd think their last shows would be local. Even still, they had a great five year run that produced many memorable concerts and three albums, and add one more thing to that: a retrospective DVD/CD combo! According to the band's Facebook page, it will be titled "Live After Death", and it will feature the band's music videos along with live videos, demos, interviews, and more! A video showcasing the intro of the DVD was also posted, which you can watch at this location! Good stuff, it appears to be a performance from their Milwaukee Summerfest show. It's still a shame to see Bad Side breaking up, but you never know what might happen down the road, and as updates come in for "Live After Death", I'll let you all know! Next up, here's a new locally-related video from a metal band that came through town last summer! You may remember on August 11th when Toronto instrumental progressive metal trio The Isosceles Project played at The Canadian Nightclub as openers for Skull Fist. Well, here's a side you don't see from many bands who play here, as the band posted a new installment of their tour blog onto their official YouTube channel! It's almost 8 minutes of what appears to be the post-concert party and gathering that the band had with fans and band members! There's lots of swearing and alcohol to go around, so if you're easily offended, don't watch. It is however mostly talking amongst the band and other attendees about the concert and such, so if you're expecting live concert clips or road footage, you won't find it. It's a good video though, and this is the kind of stuff you might have been a part of before with other local bands, and parts are amusing too! Check it out below, and fingers crossed that The Isosceles Project come back through here one day, they're an awesome band! Next up, do you remember in December 2009 when local photographer Curt O'Neil posted photos from the Kiss Battle of the Bands onto his official website, specifically of Lion Ride's sets? Well, I did mention in my review of Lion Ride's show last week that he was snapping pictures at this most recent show as well, and a sneak peek at his shots is now online! Five photos are now up, one each for Mikey, Marky, Marco, Iron Mike, and Carmine, and they're all great quality! Makes me want to see the rest even more! I didn't mention this in my review, but Curt got special on-stage access for some photos, which led to shots like this one of Mikey Lion singing right in front of the crowd! Who's that guy on the far left though? He doesn't look very metal. There's a lot more photos from Curt to come, and Donna Hopper too, so when the rest make it online, I'll let you all know! And next, we have the latest news and notes from Woods of Ypres! Again, this is stuff I had referred to in the past, but never devoted proper attention to. It has been announced on Woods of Ypres' Facebook page that their 2009 CD "Woods IV: The Green Album" will be reissued by their new label Earache Records on CD and vinyl on March 14th. Nice to see W4 get a wide release like this, as it is a great album (if depressing at parts), but this likely will spell a delay for "Woods V: You Were The Light", which David alluded to in his Governor's Ball interview. After all, if they put two Woods of Ypres albums out in the same timeframe, one (or possibly both) would suffer in sales, so it makes sense to stagger them and devote attention to one at a time. So we'll likely have to wait until the summer (at the earliest) for "Woods V", but it should be worth the wait! With that said, the band has a few more independent copies of Woods of Ypres' independent back catalog for sale, so if you want information on how to snag these albums, click here! And finally, the metal blog Antivenin included "Woods V" on their list of the most anticipated albums for 2011, including references to the reaction over their "breakup". I've made many of them date accurate to reflect this new year we're in, but the following are just factual edits or additions. Our Defunct Local Band Profile on M7K now reflects guitarist Mike Vincent's most recent work in The Bear Hunters. From our GarageBand Profile Mini-Series this past summer, I edited the Recognition and Sin Stereo profiles to reflect the removal of their iLike pages as "band pages", as they aren't really. Also from that series, I edited the Gates of Winter profile to reflect the addition of Jon Morrison on drums, but I did specify in the profile that he was not a band member when GarageBand was active, and he was only added to make the page accurate at present, as the band are still together. Finally, I edited our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on Lion Ride guitarist Mark Rand's solo project, as he is now going by his real name for his solo work, instead of his Lion Ride stage name Marky Lion. With that said, I also made it date accurate to refer to the fact that his show with The Mark Rand Band last month has came and went. As more edits become necessary, I'll have them for you!
