Bankshot - "Angst For The Memories" CD Review!!

It's now time for our 131st monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, and with things slow as usual during the pandemic, let's dive into the archives for an album I should have reviewed on here long ago, namely defunct local punk quintet Bankshot's only studio album "Angst For The Memories"! Independently released in 1999, this album was recorded that March at Full Scale Audio Productions with producer/Gsis Murphy alum Keith Davis, much like the previous year's "Local Steel" compilation. Bankshot are represented here by vocalist Ron Pelletier (ex-Ten Brick Limit), guitarists Christian Pasiak (Sleepy & The Noise) & Lucas Schmiedendorf (The Sick Sons), bassist Neil Vallee, and drummer Clint Wilson (ex-12 Gauge Ready). "Angst For The Memories" has been out of print for two decades, but there are no shortage of free uploads of this album on YouTube and elsewhere, such as this full video, and The Rad Zone has had CD copies in the past.

Myself, I own an original CD copy with liner notes, so I'll be getting as full of an experience as I can for this write-up. However, I was only 10 years old when "Angst For The Memories" was released, so if I miss any context from the lyrics or performers, I apologize, I truly wasn't there. With 15 songs running for 44 minutes or so, let's kick off this long overdue CD review!

The opening song is "Losing Face", which is about reflecting on a poor life choice, highly implied to be a former friendship. The opening noodly guitar riff is slightly odd, but when the song proper kicks into gear, it's full of classic skate punk action that's tightly played and to-the-point! Ron's youthful vocals don't really showcase the bitterness of the lyrics, and boosted backing vocals would have helped on the choruses but this is a nice showcase for Bankshot's collective talents to start! Second is the album's shortest track, "Planet Payback", where Ron sings about life not turning out how he expected, and how it's payback for his past decisions. After another guitar intro that doesn't sound like the song ahead, we get a faster paced attack complete with a nice solo from Christian! Solid drums from Clint as well, but this is a song that could have used a longer composition, as it feels like they dropped a few verses from this one. Fun track for punk diehards while it lasts though!

Third is the three+ minutes long "One Minute Alone", which is about still needing time alone to collect your thoughts, even when you're having fun with friends. The up-tempo composition and forceful drumming are welcomed, as is another lead guitar solo, and Neil's bass cuts through well on this track in particular! The verse singing is a little sleepy when the song doesn't call for it, but it could be an ironic choice given the lyrics. Solid early number all around! Next is the "Bobbing For Rotten Apples", which is about looking for a second chance from a loved one. This is technically the longest track on the CD, but that's due to a minute's worth of closing and opening samples taken from "There's A Lot Of Work Out There To Do" by Dennis Day, which I believe comes from a Disney vinyl record on Johnny Appleseed.

The title is otherwise metaphorical on this song, which has a nice composition, maintaining a fast pace while also giving a bit of a dramatic flair all at once! Ron sings with force at the expense of clarity here, which isn't ideal, but this is the best written song so far on the CD, and I like how it builds as it goes along! That said, I don't find the samples add anything to what Bankshot themselves wrote. Fifth on the album is "Long Days", a lament about the end of a relationship and what one would do to get their partner back. This song has more of a ska influence on the verses, which gives things some nice variety, but the choruses are fast and intense, and the vocals are a nice match throughout here! The bridge feels a little rushed, and the ending is too abrupt, but while I'm not a diehard ska punk fan, I can definitely appreciate this song's fun atmosphere! The drums and bass are particularly effective, and this is another early highlight!

Song #6 is "Think", which is about two women who have a lot of personal problems, despite Ron being too busy to give them willful attention. Clint's drumming is noticeably off in the introduction, but the song overall is quick and entertainingly direct, with a fun skate punk vibe. In this case, Christian's guitar solo feels tacked on and unnecessary to the song as a whole, but when everyone's focusing on the verses and choruses, this song is a firecracker, and well worth a listen! That's followed by "No Way Out", about a boy who murders his father, only or the act to haunt him into adulthood. A very straightforward modern punk number that is a massive contradiction from the dark lyrics, this track has solid energy and a nice bass track from Neil, and the vocals are well sung with the track, but if the lyrics were meant to be ironic given the music on hand, the impact was admittedly lost on me. Entertaining track overall, but don't let the break at 66 seconds fool you!

Eighth is "Thanks For The Bruise", which is directed at a woman who left an abusive relationship, though it starts with a 30 second intro of an angry old man threatening someone (if it's sampled from something, I couldn't place it.) Arguably the heaviest song yet on "Angst For The Memories", Christian and Sal deliver my favourite guitar performances yet here, and Ron's singing has the right melodic touch to go with the song! Again, this intro adds nothing, but the music comes together just right across the board, and it's my favourite track so far! Next is "Buying The Flag", which is a criticism of an unnamed political candidate, though the lyrics heavily imply that it's the late Ross Perot, who ran for U.S. president as a third party candidate in 1992 & 1996. Given that 1999 wasn't an election year, the lyrics don't cut as deep as they may have had this song been written about a 2000 candidate, but it is what it is. The full punk action ramps up after a soft 25 second intro.

This song sounds rougher than a lot of it's predecessors, especially the bridge between the first two verses, but the raw nature suits their punk genre, and Christian gets another brief guitar solo to shine late. I like the song, but it's not as polished as others on the CD, and the political commentary is easy to miss from how the song is performed. The tenth track is "Fall From Grace", about a woman who leaves a dysfunctional home for a new city, only to find that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Despite the somewhat melancholy lyrics, they contrast well with the upbeat skate sound here, and I like the upbeat guitar work, as well as Ron's higher register vocals. It's a fun song, but it ends super abruptly after just 2:19, which is a shame, as it's another album highlight! It could have at least used one more verse and maybe even a solo to help put it over the top.

Next up is "Consolation Prize", a motivational song about persevering when things don't go your way. The second of two songs here to exceed 4 minutes in length, this gives Neil his best showcase on the CD during the opening bass/drum-centric verse, but the song dives into a standard punk vibe afterwards. This song feels like a few different songs stitched together, so some extra editing may have tightened things up a bit, but everyone performs well, and the vocals match up consistently as it goes along! Track #12 is "Bottled Love", a lament to an ex-girlfriend that one wishes would return. Musically, this song cuts to the chase with more punk intensity, though like with prior personal songs, the message may be lost unless you look at it ironically.  The mid-song ska break adds some nice variance, but the hard hitting skate attack around it works on it's own merits, especially with Clint's drumming and the extra oomph from the backing vocals, so there's a lot to like here!

After that, we have "Marathon", which seems to allude to a getting revenge on a bully or tormentor now that they have no one on their side. I was getting a Bad Religion vibe from this one, if that's a fair comparison, and that definitely is a plus in my book! Ron has good vocal control as this one rolls along, the melodies are really solid, and while it's not an overly aggressive song, it's nicely paced and well performed. Another album highlight for me! The penultimate track is "Little Morning Pick-Me-Up", which alludes to coffee (Folgers, specifically), albeit in the context of someone who would rather write songs, drink coffee and relax in bed than be traditionally productive. After a 54 seconds long intro (which is softer than anything else on the CD), we get into Bankshot's fast paced punk wheelhouse with solid riffing, though the actual meat of the song is over real quick. It's solid while it lasts, but I wish this song was more substantial, as the intro didn't need to be that long.

"Angst For The Memories" closes with "Friendly Foe", about changing your tune over a supposed "friend" who has taken advantage of you for far too long. More of a drawn out number comparaitvely speaking, the lyrics are arguably the easiest to make out on the whole album, the quick musicianship and rapid drumming contrasts well with Ron's deliberate narrative vocals, and it's a solid way to put a bow on the CD! So, what are my final thoughts on Bankshot's only album? Overall, this is a raw but energetic and very promising album from a band too good to have only lived for two years, and it's easy to see why it's gotten so much underground attention in the punk community since their 2000 breakup! Fans of 1990s skate punk will be right at home with these songs, which mostly stay on that trajectory with verve and attitude, and while there are things they could have addressed, it was clearly the right album for the moment!

Christian and Lucas' twin guitar attack was great throughout, as were Christian's occasional guitar solos, Neil and Clint provided the right rhythm across the board, and while Ron's vocals weren't always the clearest to hear, his attitude and tone fit, especially given their ages at the time. That said, some songs could have been lengthened, had less abrupt endings, or had their introductions cut down or removed entirely, especially the two with samples. Songs like "Thanks For The Bruise", "Marathon", and "Long Days" proved what Bankshot were capable of, and while they disbanded just a year after this CD came out, it holds up well for genre fans. Give "Angst For The Memories" a listen at the above links, but what are we reviewing on the site in June? I don't yet know, but if no major new releases come out, I will dive into the archives once again.  Our anti-bias buffer rule limits us from a new (Mike) Haggith album review next month, but other than that, it's wide open.

Time will tell what is next, but stay tuned for our next CD review next month, and for more news and notes on the site next week! Thanks everyone!

A New Band Page Discovery, Plus Plenty Of Recent News Items!!

We're back with some assorted news today, mostly to clear out recent shorter items that we haven't yet covered on here, but we are leading off with a new discovery of a band page relating to some recently prominent musicians (and brothers) that we never covered on here, so here's what you need to know!

In looking up recent Project 421 guest singer Travis McKenzie's past music work, I came across a website for one of his old bands, so what should you know? We technically already have this band linked on the site under their last name 20 Pack of Marshmallows, but among short lived stints under the Manganese and Warning names, they were first called Wanko Twist from their 2008 inception until around mid-2009. Travis sang lead and played guitar in this era of the band, and at the time, he was joined by his older brother Curtis (of Haggith & Project 421 fame) on guitar, Darren Vlasoff on drums, and while Wanko Twist didn't have a bassist, Curtis' long time bandmate Daniel Horton served as their manager. There's obvious Haggith connections to their sound and set, with Haggith originals such as "Wanko" (naturally) and "Loverbeam" starting in this project, but their sound didn't attain a direct grunge influence until their brief run as Manganese. An album named "Battle Royale" was once planned, while they did play some Dunnplugged gigs at the former Sir James Dunn Collegiate under this name.

It's interesting to read up on Curt's past band work, which had a lot of ambition and effort. and while none of the Wanko Twist videos linked on their site survive, songs played by this band under their later 20 Pack of Marshmallows incarnation can be seen on his YouTube channel. From what is currently available, you can see the talent and promise from the McKenzie brothers and their collaborators, so give them a look at the above links, and read more about this band's eventful run via Curt's solo Facebook page!

Finally for today, here's nine assorted shorter updates from the last while, as we clear out many recent items! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist, event, or website name:

  • A post on local goregrind label Blood Shed Productions' Facebook page on May 11th by Brutaly Fatal frontman Austin McCrae indicated that the label was "planning on having a show at The Oddfellows (Hall)", and were seeking performers and sorting through details, though a date wasn't announced there. Whether this is connected to Heavy North Entertainment or will be an independent show is yet uncertain, but stay tuned for potential details!
  • Sault Michigan metal band Chained Memories have announced that they are "a failed project" & "no longer a band", as per a post by drummer/founder Mike Rynberg on their Facebook page on Sunday, which cites various personal differences for their breakup. Chained Memories had been active off & on since 2009, but never managed to fully get off the ground, or even post live material during their run. Original Eastern U.P. metal bands haven't had an easy go lately, but hopefully everyone stays active in music, and best of luck to Mike, Ryan, Sean, Chris, and other former members in the future!
  • Though local goregrind solo project Crucify The Whore won't be playing live again until next month, they're still busy, as leader Tyler Gibson announced on their Facebook page on Sunday that their upcoming demo album "Welcome To Earth" is complete! Whether that refers to the sessions or full pressing isn't clear yet, but keep an eye out for it this summer!
  • The Jack Spades EP release show at The Rockstar Bar on Friday was covered by SooToday's Donna Hopper for this article (entitled "Jack the planet!") that was posted online the next day. Solid write-up, and there's also very nice photos of the bands, though they're all in black and white, and none are from Johnny Belanger & Jesse Cook's acoustic set. Click here to see 7 photos of Jack Spades, 5 of Project 421, and 3 of The Elements!
  • On Friday, organizers of the annual Sault Michigan benefit concert festival LemmaFest updated this year's Facebook event page to clarify some recent news, including that bands will be confirmed this coming week, other events and themes are in the works, and that fans shouldn't worry about a recent minor setback, with weather the only pressing concern this year. I didn't hear any negative rumours, but good to know things are going alright, and stay tuned for more!
  • I have read recent Facebook personal postings concerning a new Sault Michigan band named Nose Dive that has been playing live gigs in the area recently, and their lineup features singer/guitarist Fran Blackwood (Electric Motor Fish), ex-Clownsack bassist Tony Rogers (most recently of No Decision), and Power Slug drummer Bob Helsten. The lineup is promising, but I have yet to find an online page for them, nor confirmation of their sound/genre. If we hear anything, we'll let you know!
  • Local/St. Catharine's death metal trio Shit Liver will head back to Cochrane, Ontario in late June for another set at their annual Touch of Death Metal & Punk Fest, as per the event's Facebook page. Awesome to see them back this year, so keep it in mind for next month if you're in the area! For reference, London death metal band D3athcharg3r (featuring the Soo's own Steve Rhodes & Andrew Angelic) have also been confirmed, which is awesome too!
  • SooToday's current poll on their website poses this question: "Would you listen regularly to a local Internet radio station?", with choices including variations of "Yes" relating to where you'd be listening, along with "Nope, not interested." It's not clear yet whether this is an early feeler towards a Village Media-launched station, but over 55% of voters have chosen "Nope" as of this writing. If you want to show your support either way, vote above, as this could work well if it's a serious thought!
  • According to posts on their Facebook page over the weekend, local hard rock band The Suicide Kings were joined by Wishbone drummer Brent Royer on temporary vocals for most of their weekend at The Rednecks Saloon, after Mike Gaetano bowed out due to strep throat complications. Brent has lead vocal experience from bands like Settle For Silver and the original Turner Up, so hopefully he was a solid fill-in, and I wonder if anyone got any footage?

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes soon, plus this month's YouTube Channel Profile on Thursday! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (415E), Weekend Concert Previews, And Much More!!

Most of our current cached news items will be cleared in today's post, including some assorted recent news and notes, and new studio material from a recently visible local metal band, but first, we have local metal/hard rock concert previews for this weekend! Well, this is a slow weekend for heavier concerts, as I only have three known public concerts to get to (all in the Sault Michigan area), but if I hear of any late notice concerts, I'll be sure to have them online in some form! Now, let's begin with our first previews for concerts this weekend, including related LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Sault Michigan hard rock/metal quartet 415E will play their first shows outside of the Soo TONIGHT & TOMORROW when they make their debuts at The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino, and to go along with them, they're now scheduled to return there for shows on June 28th & 29th! My source for the new dates is Kewadin Casino's entertainment page, which also now confirms this weekend's shows too, which had previously been slotted for local country band Perry Hatch. No word on why they're out, but they'll be back in the area soon, so country fans need not worry! As you may remember, 415E made their non-Sebastian Bach debuts last weekend at the Sault Kewadin, and this new band featuring Nixxon Dixxon, Highest of Fives, and Splitshot alumni have a diverse lineup of music in store for this weekend (and next month), with everything from Ozzy Osbourne & Volbeat to The Foo Fighters & Johnny Cash planned (plus originals), so you won't wanna miss their St. Ignace debuts this weekend!

They'll be on at 9:00 PM tonight and tomorrow, there's no announced cover charge, and you must be 21 to attend. For more details on both St. Ignace weekends (including sources for some of the above info, and lots of brand new band and concert photos), visit their official Facebook page! 415E should rock it this weekend and next, as the talent's there, so don't miss them this weekend or next month, and for a preview of tonight & tomorrow's shows, here's the guys playing their self-titled original at the Sebastian Bach show in January!

Also in this weekend's heavier-leaning concerts, Kinross hard/classic rock quintet Banned will return to one of their favourite regional stomping grounds for a one night only gig TOMORROW at Todd's Tavern in Moran, Michigan! Currently their last scheduled show until July (no word on possible June dates), this will be this recently prolific local band's second stop at Todd's Tavern of this month, and though no returns to Moran have been announced at present, there's likely more to come if you can't make tomorrow's show! Even still, Banned's ever-evolving sound and prolific mix of covers & originals has been a consistent sight on the local scene for a while now, and hopefully Tara & the guys deliver another knockout tomorrow before what could be a month's break, which is an eternity given their recent concert pace. Tomorrow's show is a 21+ event with no announced cover charge and an early 8:00 PM start time, and for more details, click here! Don't miss Banned's return to Moran tomorrow night, and for a preview, here's Banned's current lineup covering Carrie Underwood earlier this year!

Next up, are you still curious to hear new original studio material from Sault Ontario/North Shore death metal quartet Crimson Crusade? Well, the guys have posted two tracks from their to-be-released EP (which will be titled "Upon the Eve of War") onto their new Reverbnation page and frontman Devon Lucier's YouTube channel, and the tracks are Crimson Crusade's originals "Pillage" & "Vanquish The Tyrant"! Their first posted audio recordings since 2010 (back when they were still a quintet), these were recorded in February with producer Dave Pihlaja at the Smoke & Oak Room Studios, though plans to upload the rest of the songs haven't happened yet. I won't fully comment on the songs now, as I hope to review the EP when it's released, but fans of their concerts with Devon on vocals shouldn't be disappointed, and the growth from their early gigs is clear! As it's longer, I've embedded "Vanquish The Tyrant" below, but check out both tracks at the above links, don't miss them at the Skeletonwitch show on June 3rd, and stay tuned for more EP updates!

Finally for today, here's some recent shorter news updates, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

  • Kincheloe, Michigan metal project Chained Memories revealed on their Facebook page yesterday that they're planning to have a full lineup again by the fall and play their first show by next year, while also explaining why their planned first song wasn't posted. Hopefully the guys can get the band off the ground soon, especially with how hard it's seemed to be for extreme metal bands to take off across the river!
  • Sault Ontario metal standouts Garden of Bedlam will play their first concert outside of Ontario when they headline a concert at La P'tite Grenouille (French for The Little Frog) in Quebec City, Quebec on June 8th! They'll also be featured at Nissanfest there that day to promote the show and meet fans. This is an awesome opportunity, and hopefully it leads to more big chances to spread their reach and fanbase, so fingers crossed it's a hit!
  • We forgot to mention this on here when first announced, but tickets for the June 3rd Skeletonwitch concert at The Canadian Nightclub are now on sale for $12 at The Rad Zone, Case's Music, Music Depot, and The Canadian Motor Hotel, so pick them up A.S.A.P. or pay more at the door! This will be a huge concert, so don't miss out!

That's all for today, but in case there's not enough for a new news post this weekend, stay tuned for this month's Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on Giwakwa guitarist Chris Page's former London band Lead The Dead on Sunday! Thanks everyone!

Destroilet Updates, Plus News From The Sault Michigan Area!!

Let's get back to the news on this Tuesday morning, so what stories are in the pipeline? Today, we're split between a recently dormant local band and their big new plans (and a classic video to go along with it) and updates from a few bands in the Eastern U.P., one of which has a new video! For all of today's news and notes, read on below for what you need to know!

Local old school hardcore quintet Destroilet are continuing their largely quiet studio work, and in the band's most recent updates, they've revealed full plans for their second CD! According to their Facebook page, they're planning to release a self-titled 12-song CD "very soon", and thanks to drummer Matt Waples, I can confirm the planned track listing for it! The album will feature all 6 songs from their 2011 debut EP, though they've just been remastered from those recordings, and not redone in the new sessions. The other 6 songs are from Destroilet's 2012 studio work, and they include new original songs named "Truly Infected", "R.O.Y.C.", and "Eternal Fire", along with covers of The Ducky Boys' "Cross To Bear" (Walk Proud, Stand Tall)", former local band Fistmagnet's "Evil God Hater", and a song named "Tourettes" (perhaps the Nirvana song of that name?) This is the CD's planned cover, and Matt told me that they're hoping to have the CD out by the end of the year, with a planned return to the stage by mid-January (which would be their first public concert in almost two years if it occurs), though nothing is final as of yet.

As a preview of what's to come, Destroilet uploaded the full version of their new song "Eternal Fire" to their MySpace page to check out! I won't go into details on my thoughts on it yet, as I expect to review the CD in January if release expectations hold up, but fans of Destroilet's older work shouldn't be disappointed! I'm cautiously optimistic on these new plans, but hopefully the guys will be back in high gear like they were in 2009 & 2010 in no time, so fingers crossed we hear more from their camp soon, check out the new updates above, and stay tuned later in this post for more from Destroilet!

Next up, here's the newest video from Kinross hard rock quartet Banned! Though posted onto usual filmer Ashley Traynor's YouTube channel last week, this video actually comes from former guest bassist Eric Cairns via his new film production company Third Cinema Productions, which alone suggests a good quality video! Shot at one of Banned's shows at The Runway Bar in Hessel last month, this is of Banned covering the Foster the People song "Pumped Up Kicks", and while it's softer than much of their general covers, it's not badly executed! Guitarist Alex Traynor handles lead vocals here, and "occasional" singer Mike Straw is not featured. Also of note, Grooves Music owner and veteran local musician Gary Hatch guested with Banned on rhythm guitar for this song (remember, Alex SchrÊšvenwever is attending college out of town), and Gary adds well to the proceedings! The video quality is pretty good, but dancers do get in the way at times, and the lighting can impair the quality a bit, though overall, it's pretty good, so check out Banned's newest video below!

Thirdly today, here's the latest news and notes from Kincheloe metal project Chained Memories! Continuing with their very unstable lineup, the band quietly confirmed in recent months that Chris Tolliver has signed on as their new bassist (replacing Mikaela White), while guitarist Ryan Nicklas returned to the band following a brief departure, and founder/drummer Mike Rynberg is returning to vocal duties as well, following the departure of now-Eleventh Hour singer Sean Roush. Notably, there were plans to have a demo of their first song posted in October (via their Facebook page), but unless it's on personal pages only, it hasn't came yet. There's still a lot of unknowns for Chained Memories' sound, but Mike's put in a lot of work to get this band off the ground, and hopefully Ryan & Chris are the right fits going forward! Lastly for notes relating to Mike Rynberg's musical output, I've discovered that Mike apparently is working on another area metal project, that being a deathcore band named Bleeding Beauty. There's way too little on their pages yet to warrant full coverage on the site, but if I hear anything more from them or Chained Memories, you'll hear it here!

Finally for today, here's this week's classic video! I couldn't tie in a new video with a band playing live this weekend that I could find, but with Destroilet activity ramping up, I thought I'd bookend this post with another old video of theirs, now finally on YouTube! In mid-2009, the guys posted a handful of videos to their Facebook group, one of which has already made it to YouTube, but for this week, I've posted their cover of The Billy Bastards' "Mile 58", which was on last year's debut EP and will also be on their planned new album! Filmed at a jam session circa May 2009, at least three band members are present (singer Mike Hull, drummer Matt Waples, and guitarist Christian Foisy, I think), and they do a good job on this cover, giving this local country/punk tune a nice hardcore assaulting! I just wish the camera was positioned better, as only Matt is reasonably visible. Uploaded by Christian to Facebook after it's filming, you can check out the original video at http://facebook.com/photo.php?v=84617907604, but I brightened the lighting after the YouTube upload.

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!!! All credit for this video goes to Destroilet, I'm just trying to share it with a deserving wider audience! It's a solid cover for you old school hardcore fans, so give it a look below, and stay tuned for new Destroilet updates when & if they come in!

That's probably all for today, but stay tuned for more news, weekend concert previews, and more this week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Banned), Half A Man & AlterWhite News, And More!!

I wasn't planning to rush a news post tonight, but with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TONIGHT, I had to scrape one together, so along with that, we have some Half A Man-related media, a new song from a local metal band, and more assorted stories. Also check out our Rotaryfest main stage/Tym Morrison concert previews in the post below this one, but for now, here's our latest news!

Kinross hard rock quintet Banned are apparently playing another area concert TONIGHT in a place we've never covered concerts in before! Continuing with their widely scattered shows at venues all over the Eastern U.P. (most of which aren't commonly touched on here), they'll be hitting Todd's Tavern in Moran, Michigan (20 minutes northwest of St. Ignace, an hour southwest of the Soo) tonight for their first ever stop at this venue! Todd's Tavern is new to us entirely (and not only because of our coverage expansion) as it was only launched in May, after current owner Todd St. Andrew purchased the former Bullwinkle's Bar & Grill, and now they're in operation & hosting live music! Whether Todd's Tavern will become a frequent destination for local hard rock/metal bands is to be determined, but this could just be among the wide array of venues that Banned have been playing this year in the region. Either way, they'll have lots of covers and originals in store for fans and revelers in Moran, and hopefully some of you guys can head out there for this show! I don't believe they're playing there on on Saturday, but tonight's show should have a 21+ age limit and a 10:00 PM-ish start time, and a cover charge has not been announced. Check the above links for more details!

And yes, I apologize for the short notice on this show, but Banned only announced it on their Facebook page earlier today. This should be a solid concert from this entertaining and hard working local band, so keep their Moran/Todd's Tavern debut in mind tonight! For a preview, here's Banned covering Alice In Chains' "Man In The Box" in the Soo in January!

Next up, here's some assorted updates relating to Brimley metal trio Half A Man! Recent news has been slow, but some new Facebook-only videos have been posted this month to keep fans up to speed, including this one featuring words from frontman Erik Rintamaki and bassist Gary Croad mentioning some upcoming post-LemmaFest recording plans (and revealing some unexpected "temporary" drummers.) Nice enough video, and it's good to see some light humour in it! The other video is of the audio of their original song "Life Goes On" from LemmaFest, with assorted video footage from live concerts & practices (even from older lineups), so click here to give that a look! The footage is cool, though I'd have tried syncing up earlier videos of "Life Goes On" with it to make it look like it was all filmed together. Stay tuned for more Half A Man news as it comes in via the above links, and on a final related note, do you guys remember Set To Random, the mid-late 2000s acoustic rock trio featuring Erik on bass and Gary on drums? Well, as it turns out, they have one plugged in hard rock song named "Safe Mode" that sounds pretty good! The rest of their old material is on the softer acoustic side of things, but this has a slow deliberation that works in it's favour, and effective melodic singing from Jason Klein, so click here to hear it and more from Set To Random!

Also in the realm of newly posted media, Sault Ontario metal project AlterWhite posted a new song onto their YouTube channel yesterday! Entitled "1950", it sounds pretty good compared to their earlier originals, with a catchy heavy riff and nice drumming, but the vocals still sound like a forced attempt to sound like James Hetfield, and the song itself is slightly repetitive. I like where they Mike & Kevin are heading though, so check out AlterWhite's new song below!

And finally for tonight, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:
  • Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories have quietly confirmed that only drummer Mike Rynberg is left in their lineup, meaning that Sean Roush, Ryan Nicklas, and Mikaela White have all departed. Not surprising given some of their recent news, but best of luck to all of them in the future, and if you're interested in trying out for Chained Memories, message the band/Mike at this location!
  • According to Frightlight's Facebook page last month, local film production company 62nd Chamber Productions (ran by ex-BeeFMouTH member Boyd Rendell) will be on hand at WEDNESDAY'S Anvil concert at The Canadian Nightclub to film their set for upcoming media uses, and the guys wanna see some fans in Halloween costumes for the occasion! Keep that in mind for the concert, it'll be a cool sight ig people follow through!
  • In recent Twitter postings, Redundant frontman Justin Langlois noted that his local punk band would be playing at The Roosevelt Hotel on August 2nd, which is a Thursday. Will that be the 48th Rosie metal night, or just a conveniently timed separate show? If it's indeed in the series, it'll be Redundant's first official Rosie metal night in almost 9 months, but I'll keep you guys posted with updates if I hear of them!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news tomorrow before I head to the Second Stage for Garden of Bedlam! Thanks everyone!

Band Status Updates, Concert Date Changes, And New Videos!!

Here's a post full of assorted news items for this likely warm Tuesday, so we've got a pair of local metal act dissolutions, a couple of notes from Sault Michigan (including a band revival and concert date changes), and a pair of new videos from across the river, so read on below for all that you need to know!

It looks like local hardcore/death metal quartet Skull After Betrayl has broken up for a second time. They quietly deleted their Facebook page earlier in the spring, though other online pages still exist, luckily. A public statement hasn't been made about their breakup, but I can confirm that the split was completely amicable, and I can assume that frontman Mike Vincent's recent band search & guitarist Justin Polutanovich's new role in Borderline Divine were indicators that their status was in question. This ends a brief & uneventful reunion that started in October after their initial 2 month breakup last year, but after bassist Adam Brett briefly moved out of town in January, band updates stalled. I'm disappointed to see them officially throw in the towel, as they were steadily improving as a band during their initial early-mid 2011 run, which saw them open for the likes of The Dayglo Abortions and Titan's Eve. Hopefully the guys all stay in music, as they all were clearly talented or noticeably improving! Best of luck to Mike, Justin, Adam, and Anthony in the future, and I've moved Skull After Betrayl to our inactive local band links!

The other recent end is for ex-Browbeat frontman Dutch Vanderploeg's latest solo project, as he deleted his Facebook & Reverbnation pages at some point this spring. He usually wipes his band pages for every project he leads that dissolves, which is disappointing for fans, though he thankfully left his YouTube channel up this time. Dutch is and always has been a very talented musician, and I hope he revisits his original music again in the future! I find his music doesn't get the appreciation it's deserves, and hopefully this won't be the last we hear from him! As YouTube channels aren't really band pages, I've regrettably removed Dutch from our band links, but if he gets back into a band, you know they'll be linked & covered here!

Now to some positive stories, both from the Sault Michigan area, starting with a band revival! On May 4th, you may remember that Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories had disbanded for unannounced reasons, not long after singer Sean Roush had left. Well, just a week later, the band confirmed on their Facebook page that they're "back in business" and are looking for musicians with "any talent" to hit them up, presumably to join the band in some capacity. Whether Sean's back or if any other members are out isn't known yet, but the post implies that there is some member searches in the works. It's great to see Chained Memories giving this another go, and hopefully Mike & company can finally take off and accomplish big things in the area! The other Sault Michigan story is that Cheboygan metal trio Peril's next planned concert weekend at The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino has been pushed back a week from July 20th & 21st to July 13th to 14th. A reason for the change hasn't been announced, but Peril have not confirmed concert dates beyond June yet on band pages, and Kewadin Casino have no one new booked for the July 20th weekend yet, as per their entertainment page, so the jury's out. The sooner the better, hopefully, so keep Peril's new next concert dates in mind for this summer!

Let's close with new videos, starting with a new video of Kinross hard rockers Banned from their concert at The Runway Bar in Hessel (50 minutes from Sault Michigan) on Saturday! Filmed by frequent filmer/family member Ashley Traynor and uploaded to her YouTube channel on Sunday, it's of Banned covering the Bachman/Turner Overdrive classic "Takin' Care of Business" at that concert! Lead vocals were provided by drummer Don Traynor (leaving singer Mike Straw to backing vocals), while Banned were rejoined by former bassist Alex Schrovenwever on rhythm guitar at this show as well, similarly to their March concert at The Bird. If Alex has permanently rejoined, band pages haven't confirmed his return, but it's good to see him back with the Traynors, even if just once! This is a solid cover, and Don sings well on it, but I've seen better videos of Banned. The colours are very washed out, dancers get in the way, Jim Pentland is barely visible, and I still wanna hear Mike sing more in Banned's live videos, but this is still another good video of Banned live, so give it a look below, and keep posted on Banned's next local & area dates at the above links!

Finally, here's a new promo video for Sault Michigan classical metal band Theatre of Night's new album "The Dawn's Early Light"! Though called their second promo video, it's effectively a replacement for their first one, as they made it private for unannounced reasons in the last week, merely saying that the original had "expired". Posted on their YouTube channel on Sunday, it is actually an improvement, as it moves any "Christmas Night" mentions to the end, lessening the seasonal vibe. The only real new information on "The Dawn's Early Light" in this video is that "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" will also be performed on the album, meaning that 9 of the 12 songs have now been announced. Sounds good to me, so check out Theatre of Night's new promo video below, and stay tuned for updates as we inch closer to the summer!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more news to come this week! Thanks everyone!

Local Band Lineup Changes, Another Band's Demise, And More Updates!!

Before we post our review from last night's Roberta Bondar Pavilion metal concert, here's one more news post, and it's got sort of a negative bent. I say that because most of the stories relate to band member departures, with one leading to a band breakup, but we do end happily with some updates to some of our feature posts on the site! Read on below for this latest news post!

First today, I can now confirm that Brimley metal band Half A Man have officially parted ways with singer Dillion Semasky. A public statement about the move hasn't been made, but frontman Erik Rintamaki confirmed that Dillion did indeed leave the band via e-mail with me yesterday. A full reason for his exit wasn't given, but the tone of what I've heard is not negative, and Half A Man do hope to possibly jam with Dillion at LemmaFest, seeing as he's playing there that night with Munising metal quintet Infathom already. Dillion had joined Half A Man in December, but was only featured in one rehearsal video before questions of his band status arose in the spring, thanks to statements about Half A Man's next projects as a trio. I figured that Dillion would add an interesting dimension to their sound with his extreme style of vocals, but this move is probably the best for all parties, and hopefully Dillion continues to rock the U.P. with Infathom! As recent postings have indicated, Half A Man are reverting to a trio for their upcoming album & LemmaFest set, with Erik back on vocals, but it's not uncharted waters for them. Remember, their first gig in the summer of 2010 was as a trio due to then-drummer Doug Reed's absence, so they should do just fine as a three-piece! Stay tuned for more Half A Man news as it rolls in!

Next up, here's the latest updates from Skeyes of Seven, the new local hard rock band featuring Sense of Truth, Half Past, and Tripod the Dog alumni! Updates have been quiet from them since their March inception, but in one recent development, it looks like they've parted ways with drummer Chris Thompson. A reason for his departure has not been announced, but Chris was quietly removed from their lineup on their Facebook page in recent weeks. As a result, the band is currently looking for a new drummer, as per a post by frontman Cory Murchison on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group yesterday. They're looking for an "experienced & dedicated" drummer, and to message either Cory or guitarist Alain Fletcher on Facebook if you're interested. Cory also added that Skeyes of Seven are hoping to become an all original band and release an album, but they are planning on doing some covers initially, with Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour, Tool, and Deftones covers in the works. Hopefully they get a new drummer soon, as we've missed them all on stage, and hopefully they find a perfect fit! And though I don't know why Chris left, he's still got Frightlight and Half Past (if they're even still alive) to fall back on, so best of luck to him for sure! Stay tuned for more Skeyes of Seven news as I hear it!

Finally for lineup changes, newer Sault Michigan metal band Hoist The Sails have apparently parted ways with guitarist Nathan Switzer, just weeks after we found out that bassist Joe Niemi had also left. Again, no public reason for Nathan's departure has been announced, but he's no longer listed on their Facebook lineup. I figure it has to have been a recent move though, as he's featured in the band's latest video from April 18th. This is really disappointing if true, especially knowing Nathan's talents as a guitarist, but hopefully he pops up in a new band soon, and in case there's an active search, message Hoist The Sails at the above links if you're interested in playing guitar or bass for them!

Now originally, we also had another lineup change, in that Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories had parted ways with singer Sean Roush on Sunday for personal reasons. However, the band confirmed on their Facebook page last night that "until further notice, we no longer exist. The band is disbanded." I assume this is partly due to Sean's departure, but no official reasoning beyond that was given. I'll note that their brief statement does leave open the possibility of a return ("Until further notice..."), but it may have needed better wording. I know that drummer Mike Rynberg has worked really hard to get Chained Memories off the ground since their late 2009 inception, and they've had promising lineups since then, but things have been visibly unstable for band membership and positions, and I don't believe they ever posted audio material. I personally don't know why things haven't moved forward much, but hopefully the guys stay active in area bands, and hopefully their next projects can succeed where Chained Memories couldn't if this is indeed their end. Best of luck to Mike, Sean, Ryan, and Mikaela in the future, and I've moved Chained Memories to our inactive Sault Michigan band links!

Let's end this post on a positive note, so here's some recent updates to some of our monthly feature posts! First, I've updated all of the entries in our Battle of the Bands Rewind Mini-Series to reflect the results and finishes of the Humane Society Battle on April 20th, including the withdrawls of Cowboys & Indians and The Moves, both of which had alumni from many of the battles we covered in the series. In our Defunct Local Band Profile Series, I've added a minor reference to the Death Rise profile to note guitarist Johnny Belanger's current work as Caveman Morrison's drummer, while for the Life's Eclipse profile, I added a brief note that guitarist David Mills is also a member of the Eckerman metal band Moss, which is now linked there. I restored a photo to the Out Of The Mouth Of Babes profile, while the State of Misery profile has saw numerous changes to reflect their latest reunion, including a new photo of their current/original lineup, notes on their current status, and the departure of bassist Devon Overman. Because they're re-activated, their profile's title once again has an asterisk (*) at the end. Finally, I added a brief mention to the From The Ashes Of Angels profile about frontman David Waite's current Colorado-based acoustic solo project Jibber N' The Beanie. There's more updates to come, but check the above links to get caught up on these newly updated SMS feature posts!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for my review from last night's Roberta Bondar Pavilion all ages metal show later tonight! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Caveman Morrison), Lion Ride's Newest Song, And Much More!!

Yes, we have more David Gold tribute concert fallout to get to (including new videos and updates from both the Toronto event last Thursday and the local concert on Saturday), but I wanted to squeeze in some more assorted news and notes from the last while tonight so it didn't get pushed back further. The new bands post from this morning (check it out below this post) also didn't help for these stories, but we've got a lot of notable stories tonight, including LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, a new page from a formerly local band, a defunct quintet's newest song, early updates on a local concert festival, and lots of assorted news and notes, so here's what you need to know!

Three weeks after their current lineup debuted at The Nicolet Tavern, popular local metal trio Caveman Morrison will return to the Albert Street venue next weekend for two more concerts! These come one week after their next shows this weekend at The Roosevelt Hotel, and it's good to see Tym and company staying busy! Note that the Friday show next weekend conflicts with drummer Johnny Belanger's scheduled appearance at the Sault Humane Society Battle of the Bands with The Bear Hunters, though I assume he could play at both if The Bear Hunters' set was early enough that day. If I hear any updates or changes to the status of either band or Johnny's involvement next Friday, I'll let you guys know! Admission should be free for both of Caveman Morrison's shows on April 20th & 21st, you must be 19 to attend, and they both have likely 10:00 PM start times. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's good to see Caveman Morrison bringing their hard rock and metal covers to some more gigs this spring, and hopefully this trend keeps up! Stay tuned for more updates!

Next up, here's a newly posted Lion Ride song! No, they haven't reunited following their February breakup, but on Monday, a studio version of their Pointer Sisters cover "I'm So Excited" was posted onto their reactivated YouTube channel! It's cool to see a new video posted there after almost three years, but it's even cooler to hear a new song from the prominent local metal quintet, even if posthumous! A frequent addition in their later concert setlists, I assume this is the fourth song that they recorded at BWC Studios in Toronto in 2010 towards their unfinished second CD (joining "Stick It In", "Snail Trail", and the yet-to-be-released "Bang Bang, Bye Bye"), though this could be a bonus cover for all we know. It's good to hear this in full studio quality, and it sounds nice and energetic like I expected, though hopefully the remaining material from their 2010 sessions are posted online soon as well! Check out Lion Ride's cover of "I'm So Excited" below, and I never noticed that Jessie Spano was a Lion Ride fan before! Maybe I should watch more Saved By The Bell.

Thirdly, a formerly local metal band has finally launched a Facebook page, that being Sue Inside! The band best known for their duo appearances at local battles of the bands in 2008 & 2009 have mostly kept their online presences to just CBC Radio 3 & YouTube since relocating to Southern Ontario, but it's good to see them launch what I assume will be an outlet for more frequent band news! Now credited as also being from London (drummer Jeff Vogel's current home), their new Facebook page mentions that their music is "for the mind", and that they're working on music to start gigging, something they've done rarely at best since moving from the Soo. Lots of photos of both their current & older lineups (including bassist Adam Veen) are posted there, along with links to their new SoundCloud page, featuring two new original recordings! Both aren't brand new, but they include their acoustic instrumental "Hermit" and their groove metal track "Caligula", both of which are good for their respective genres! "Hermit" is closer to their most recent work from frontman Shane Fraser's YouTube channel, but "Caligula" has a solid catchy metal sound that I'd love to hear more of, and their current incarnation sounds good here! Solid work, so check out the latest from Sue Inside at the above links, and I'll have more as it comes in!

Also in the news, are you guys curious about helping out or participating in this year's LemmaFest? After the successful debut for the Michael Lemma memorial concert festival last summer, a second installment is scheduled for June 23rd outside of Dondee Lanes, and updates are coming in via their official Facebook page. That said, a meeting will be held TOMORROW NIGHT at the Dondee at around 8:00 PM, and Gary Hatch from Grooves Music will be on hand to answer questions relating to the bands and what will be provided. Organizers are hoping that band members interested in participating will come to voice their opinions and ask questions, so if you wanna be a part, I'd say come to the Dondee tomorrow night at 8:00 PM! As for the lineup as it currently stands, only two bands have been 100% confirmed, those being Brimley metal quartet Half A Man and local cover rock band Chump Change, both of which feature alumni from last year's LemmaFest (Infathom's Dillion Semasky and Bucksaw's Jason VanLuven.) As well, former local musician David Waite (From The Ashes of Angels) has voiced interest in coming home to play at LemmaFest this year with his Colorado acoustic project Jibber N' The Beanie, but they have not been confirmed by organizers yet.

Hopefully LemmaFest gets another solid lineup of Michigan talent this year, so that this year's event can be bigger & better like they're striving for! As a point of reference, last year's LemmaFest featured 10 bands, and they included heavier acts like the aforementioned Infathom, the since-disbanded Swayze Train & Great Bodily Harm, and the still-active Powerslug & Scofflaw. Will we see some of the above performers back this year? Time will tell, but as more LemmaFest updates roll in, I'll absolutely have them here!

And finally for today, here's some assorted stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:
  • Former Banned bassist Alex Schrovenwever rejoined his former band on guest guitar & vocals at their most recent "job" on March 17th at The Bird in Sault Michigan, as cited from their Facebook page. As far as I can tell, this was a one-off appearance for this concert, but at least it seems to indicate that Alex's departure from Banned last fall was amicable. Stay tuned for more Banned updates as they come in!
  • Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories have announced the addition of Mikaela White as their new bassist, replacing Sean Roush, who has since replaced drummer Mike Rynberg as their primary singer. The news was confirmed last week on their Facebook page. I'm not familiar with Mikaela musically, but hopefully she'll add to the all of the talented female musicians in the Sault Michigan area!
  • I've edited our YMCA Battle of the Bands profile to note some more things about 4th place finishers Operation: Killdozer, notably that their guitarist was Winkstinger's Jesse Cook, and that half of their lineup moved on to Winkstinger the following year. I also added a link to a video of Operation: Killdozer playing their original "Pieces of You" at that March 2009 battle. It's not new, but I only recently found the link again. The quality isn't great, but note that the song sounds very similar to Winkstinger's original "Where'd We Go Wrong", which doesn't seem to be a coincidence!
That's all for today, but stay tuned for more David Gold memorial concert fallout and weekend concert previews shortly! Thanks everyone!

As It Stands EP Updates, New Videos, And More!!

Here's some more news and notes for this snowy Sunday morning in the Sault Ste. Marie area! Today, we have the latest news on a prominent local band's upcoming EP, new videos from two Sault Michigan-area metal bands, and some more assorted news from the last little while, so here's what you need to know!

As It Stands' third EP is now in the mixing stages, if you haven't heard yet, and a couple sources are dropping hints about it's progress and future news towards it's release! Brendan Clace at the local recording studio Dimension Studios has been working on the mixing for this EP since December 22nd, which he's said that he's been "stoked" to work on numerous times in the past while. Guitar tracking reportedly started on Boxing Day, and he said most recently on Thursday that he wished you could hear "the awesomeness" coming from his speakers, so click here for his recent updates. Sounds good to me, hopefully all the hype that Brendan's been building up isn't for not! Band sources have been noticeably quieter about the EP, but more cryptic at the same time in recent updates. On Thursday, the band posted a status on their Facebook & Twitter pages simply saying "#feb29th", which happens to be a Wednesday and the last day of February. Does this imply a possible release date for the EP, a new concert, or both? I don't know enough to say, but if they're putting a hashtag before it, that could be encouraging future reposts of it, so take that for what it's worth. Stay tuned for more future updates on As It Stands' next release, including updates to our next "Where Are The New Albums?" post on Thursday!

Next up, here's the latest videos from Eckerman, Michigan metal trio Swampghas, who've posted two new videos onto the Werehold Records YouTube channel on Wednesday. One is just an audio track from their forthcoming album "The Raco Tower Incident", entitled "How Can I Miss You, If You Don't Die?", so click the song title to hear it. J.R. Johnson (we now know his last name) has some solid charging guitar work here, and Jason Mills' aggressive singing fits nicely too on this song! He did tell me a while back though that the Swampghas album is entirely comprised of songs under 3 minutes long, so the short length is by design, but they pack a lot of headbanging goodness into the track, so check it out at the above link! The other new video is their music video for their song "Bog", and it's embedded below to check out! This was posted on YouTube in unfinished versions before that I was requested not to post yet, but the full version with vocals is online (for now at least.) How does it sound/look? It's very dark and grainy, but therein lies an amusing storyline and some solid heavy metal, and it's worth checking out all around, so give Swampghas' video for "Bog" a look below, and stay tuned for more Swampghas updates as they roll in!

Also new for videos from local bands across the river is the latest video from Sault Michigan/Grand Rapids epic metal quintet End of Existence! We last heard from them last month when they posted their second "Making Of..." video onto their Youtube channel, but it was since made private for unannounced reasons. In it's place (as uploaded on Thursday) is a shorter "2012 edit" of it that now also features a preview of their new original song "The Elements", which the band describes as "genre-defining". That takes up the first three minutes of the video, and how does it sound? From what I can hear, it sounds solid and in line with the aggression and creativity of their earlier originals, but I'm curious to hear the full track! The remainder of the video consists of about 2/3rds of the first "Making Of... (Part 2)", which features everything from Giles home improvements to rehearsal footage to shots of keyboardist Craig Harrison jet skiing, and for the record, I think the more entertaining footage from the previous version of this video remains intact on the new version. It's worth a look (and listen), so check out End of Existence's new-ish video below!

And finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while. As usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:
  • Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories have confirmed their current lineup's instrument positions, with guitarist Sean Roush moving to bass, Ryan Nicklas remaining on guitar, and Mike Rynberg taking on vocals as well as drums. Hopefully this holds well, I'm curious to hear what they've got going musically! Check the above link for more!
  • Garden of Bedlam frontman Erik "Buzz" Boissineau will be the subject of a Sault Star article in tomorrow's paper! A preview entitled "Singer finds peace in Garden of Bedlam" is now online to check out, which implies that the article will explore Buzz's search for musical bliss and Garden of Bedlam's local success. Watch out for the full article tomorrow!
  • Sault Ontario metal quartet Late & Loud now have their own Twitter page, where they've indicated that they now have new stage lights and no less than 3 smoke machines for future concerts. Good to know, so follow them at the above links for continued band updates on Twitter!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our review of Foothill Road's second EP by Tuesday, along with more news as it comes in! Thanks everyone!

Helix Concert & Chained Memories Updates, Plus New Videos!!

Here's some more news to end your Monday with, but rememer to check out our Joan Jett video showcase from earlier today in the post below! Now, we have updates for a major upcoming Rockstar Bar concert, new videos from a local guitarist, and the latest news from a young Sault Michigan area band, so here's what you should know!

We now have more complete details on Kitchener metal legends Helix's headlining concert at The Rockstar Bar on December 3rd, so here's what you should know! Firstly, there will be an opening band, and oddly enough, it will be local dance rock cover band Boogie Fever! Far cry from Stillbroke in 2008 genre-wise, but Boogie Fever are a talented band who you're bound to have seen locally before, and you may recognize guitarist Mark Oliverio from his work in Foothill Road too, so their talent should speak for itself! As well, ticket prices have been announced, and they will be $10 in advance or $14 at the door, which is a damn good price to see Helix live! Advance tickets are on sale at the front desk of The Algonquin Hotel (downstairs from The Rockstar Bar), and as you'd likely have expected, it's a 19+ show. Doors open at 9:00 PM with Boogie Fever presumably kicking the show off at 10:00 PM on December 3rd. Check the official Facebook event page for more details! Sounds like things are shaping up well for Helix to rock us on December 3rd, so stay tuned for updates and previews of this show as we get closer to it! It'll be a good one!

Next up, here's some more videos from local guitarist Neno Jovanovic, and first, here's a new video from the Napalm Death concert at Feedback last week! This is also from Toronto death metal band Hallows Die's set at the show, as uploaded to his YouTube channel on Friday, and it's of two new songs to be released, which they capped their set with! Like the rest of Neno's great videos from this concert, the quality's really nice, and Hallows Die are playing with a lot of fury here! I wonder if this is the last of the videos that Neno shot? I hope not, as I'd like to see some footage of Wake's set, but I can understand if he didn't get any videos of theirs. Still, endless kudos go to Neno for filming as much as he did, and check out Hallows Die's last two songs from their set below!

Another new upload onto Neno's channel is a solo demo named "Cryogenic Freezer Department", as uploaded yesterday, and I'm digging it! You may have also seen it recently on his Reverbnation page as well. The guitar riffing is fast and hard charging with a techno-sounding tint, and we get some vocals too! Death growling, actually, and Neno (if it's him singing) has a brutal voice, though when he tried to kind of shriek, it didn't flow as well. The video's only 92 seconds long, but it shows some nice promise, and hopefully Neno builds on this further in either solo or band projects! Give his newest original demo a look below!

And finally, here's some updates from Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories! First, the band has added rhythm guitarist and singer Sean Roush to their lineup, replacing Jacob Zeeryp. Band pages refer to him as being on different instruments, but I think he's handling both with the band. I'm not familiar with Sean's talents, but hopefully he'll fill a missing piece in the band! Their Facebook page has kept fans updated to progress in the band's rehearsals, and things appear to be progressing well for Chained Memories so far, even having the band post a tentaitve cover playlist for live shows! While their's some standard fare like Metallica, Judas Priest, and Pantera covers, there's also plans to cover Corrosion of Conformity, Hatebreed, and Carcass, which will be very interesting once they get gigging! Progress is slow but steady, but I think Mike, Ryan, and Sean know what they're doing, and hopefully we'll see Chained Memories rocking a local stage before you know it! Get more details at the above links, and also follow drummer Mike Rynberg on Twitter for band updates at this location!

That's all for today, but stay tuned tomorrow for more news, and for our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on The Lust Boys (featuring former Glass Statues guitarist Ben Kemp-Reynolds) on Wednesday! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & Hollow), A New Local Band, And More News!!

One more news post for your Saturday before I go check out Lion Ride TONIGHT at The Rockstar Bar, and yes, there will be a review of it tomorrow on the site! In what might be our last full news post before the fourth anniversary (two days...), we have some big news to share today, including some updates from Chained Memories, the openers for MONDAY's Titan's Eve concert, and some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, but we'll start with the one connected to a new local band, so here's what you need to know!

Yes, we have a new local band to talk about, all the way from the Kinross/Kincheloe area outside of Sault Michigan! The band is called Banned, and they're a new local hard rock trio that features former TraynWreck guitarist Alex Traynor, his dad Don on drums, and bassist Alex Schrovenwever, with all three sharing vocal duties. Nice to see Alex back out there, and the family connection is cool to see! I like how many Sault Michigan-area bands have family connections, it's actually nice to see families banding together in the name of rock over there! According to descriptions on their new Facebook page (launched around June 8th), they will "make you rock the night away", and have influences ranging from AC/DC, Van Halen, and The Darkness to Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, and Grand Funk Railroad! Interesting mix of styles there, I wonder how they'll sound? We'll have a preview of that in a second, but first, they're making their live debut on July 21st at The Rudyard Township Park in nearby Rudyard, Michigan for a Music In The Park event that evening! They'll have a full 2 hour set for this outdoor concert, which looks to be all ages with a 7:00 PM start time, and there's no announced cover charge. Click here for more details!

But how do Banned sound? Specifically, I'm not sure, but if the videos posted by Alex's sister/Don's daughter Ashley Traynor are any indication, we might get some solid hard rock! She uploaded two videos from a talent show performance from January 15th onto her YouTube channel that month, and they feature Don (on lead vocals and drums), Alex, and bassist (for this set) Steve Jacobus playing 4 cover songs: "Bad Company" by Bad Company, AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", and Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me"! Don's vocals are best on the AC/DC covers, getting a nice volume, and Alex has a nice stage presence and some real guitar skill for his age! There may just be something here, so check out 2/3rds of Banned from this January performance in the video below!

The other new concert is extremely intriguing in it's own right, and if you missed this band and it's variants over the past few years, then get excited, as Hollow are coming back! Well, for two shows anyway. Yes, the local metal band featuring former Metal Militia and Carbon Black bandmates are reuniting in August, and that includes guitarist Tym Morrison (now of Caveman Morrison), bassist Dan Beaupre (now of The Southern Fried Band), and former Dicky Swift Band/Buster Cherry bandmates Terry Eaton on guitar & Vinnie Milosevich on drums, all from the classic lineup! However, in lieu of the absent Luigi Miceli (is he still in music?), former Carbon Black frontman Travis Sharpe will sing with Hollow for these reunion shows, which will be awesome to see again! It's been a long while since Travis, Terry, or Vinnie have played locally (to my knowledge at least), and it's great to see them back! The band will reunite for just two shows next month, taking place on August 5th at The Rockstar Bar & August 6th at The Canadian Nightclub, so it's like your usual weekend sets, just at different venues. No word yet on if Hollow will play any of their old bands' originals, but there will be lots of covers in store to bring the metal to local fans once again!

A 10:30 PM start time is estimated for both shows, you must be 19 to attend either, and I'd expect a nominal cover charge of under $5 for both, knowing from past experience. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's great to see Tym, Dan, and company back together after so long (too long), and hopefully lots of metalheads show up to rock out with Hollow for old time's sake! I should be at one (likely at The Canadian), but either works! I'll keep you guys posted, and if the photo I used above isn't of a Hollow lineup, my apologies. I used the best one available that didn't have another band name slapped on it.

Thirdly today, have you been wondering who's opening for Titan's Eve at The Roosevelt Hotel on Monday night? Actually, you may already know, cause the Facebook event page for the show was launched on Wednesday! I know it's kinda late, but I heard the news AFTER my Wednesday news post, and I didn't have much to report for a full news post until today. So, better late than never, here are the openers for Titan's Eve in two nights! One is Sativa Rose, who'll bring their classic metal assault back to The Rosie just four nights after rocking the most recent Thursday metal show! Great to see them back again, they're a welcome sight at any metal concert, and always deliver some shredding good times! The other confirmed opening band is local hardcore quartet Skull After Betrayal, in their first show since opening for The Dayglo Abortions last month! Hopefully their sound continues to improve on Monday night as Mike, Adam. Justin, and Anthony continue to carve out their place in the local scene with their own brand of hardcore and death metal! The only other new item to report (beyond the poster on your right, nice work!) is that there will indeed be a $4 cover charge for this concert, but for this quality of bands, no need to complain!

I'll absolutely be at the concert! It's a great spot to celebrate our 4th anniversary, Titan's Eve kick ass, and we have a contest to wrap up that day as well! There is still time for you guys to enter our contest to win one of two Titan's Eve prize packs featuring their new album "The Divine Equal" and a free band t-shirt, so head to http://www.facebook.com/saultmetalscene to enter by adding your name to our contest status from June 27th. We draw the winners this coming Monday at 5:00 PM, so GET YOUR ENTRIES IN A.S.A.P.!!! For full contest rules, click here, and good luck!

And finally, we come full circle as we go right back to the Kincheloe area to talk about a young local band, this time, Chained Memories! Firstly, the band quietly parted ways with guitarist Jacob Zeeryp (ex-Outshined) after a very brief tenure with the band in May and June. No announcement was ever made on why he left, but he was quietly removed from their lineups on their pages. Disappointing, but hopefully he gets back into a band, his old work in Outshined wasn't bad for Christian hard rock! The other big news is that they've launched a new website, which is fairly barren as of yet, but it has a nice design, and it does confirm that they're looking for extra band members! Specifically, they want a second guitarist and a bassist between the ages of 14 & 18, preferably living in the Sault Michigan area. Contact the band for more details at the above links, cause I'm sure Mike and Ryan could use some talented musicians to help get the band out there soon! Promising guys, from what I've heard, hopefully they can get to the next steps soon! Stay tuned for Chained Memories updates as they come in!

That's all for today, but I will see you guys TONIGHT at The Rockstar Bar for Lion Ride! Thanks everyone!
