This Weekend's Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

It's now time to tackle another weekend of concert previews, straddling the end of one month and beginning of another! With news being slow at the moment, I've opted to include Sunday's Bloody Diamonds show in this post, which would typically be featured separately given that it's three days away, so don't look for it in our next post, it's in this one! And yes, we'll tackle any late notice shows if announced. Now, here's what you need to know in rough chronological order!

We'll start with longtime Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison, who will continue his weekly concert arrangement at Gliss Steak & Seafood with solo headlining dates TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY! After rocking both Gliss and The HD Sports Grill (the former Docks) last weekend, Tym will close out September and begin a new month at The Quality Inn's house restaurant for three more matinees, so if you're interested in some hard rocking acoustic covers, head downtown over the coming evenings! As usual for his long-term Gliss run, expect 6:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and no age limits, but remember that this is a sit-down formal restaurant, not a bar. Tym remains a very entertaining and prolific instrumentalist, so come down to Gliss for all of the action tonight or this weekend! For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and for a preview, here's Tym live a few years back!

Next up, let's head to Sault Michigan, where local hard rock quartet 415E will rock The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! This union of Nixxon Dixxon, Highest of Fives, and Splitshot alumni will hit the stage for the first time in over a month, and the first time in the Soo since July for this weekend's concerts, and their hard rocking covers should attract another solid audience at The Rapids Lounge both nights! As is typical for Kewadin Casino's lounge concerts, there are no announced cover charges for these 9:00 PM shows, where you must be at least 21 to attend. If you miss this weekend's shows, 415E aren't advertised to return to The Rapids Lounge again this year (they will be in St. Ignace again in a few months though), so don't miss out on 415E's hard hitting shows this weekend! Here they are live in the Soo a few years back!

Also taking place this weekend, hair metal fans in Sault Ontario will want to head to The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, as Southern Ontario-based Whitesnake tribute band Still of the Night will make their local debut! It's been over 5 years since the real Whitesnake headlined at Kewadin Casino, so if you've been craving more of the David Coverdale-led band's classic hits, Still of the Night should provide the next best thing on Saturday! Their self-description of "Canada's premier Whitesnake tribute" isn't given in vain, as they provide a faithful sounding and looking take on Whitesnake, so don't miss out on all of the action! Yes, I know it's during The Hair Scare, but how about some live hair metal? Tickets are $10 in advance at The Algonquin Hotel's front desk (no word on if they'll be pricier at the door), this is a 19+ event, and a 9:00 PM start time is announced. For more details, visit visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and stay tuned for updates, and here's Still of the Night rocking some Whitesnake live!

Finally for this preview post, Halifax/Toronto dark blues rock quartet Bloody Diamonds will make their local concert debut with a headlining concert at The New American Pub THIS SUNDAY NIGHT! Not to be confused with the more familiar Diemonds (also a female fronted hard rock band from Southern Ontario), Bloody Diamonds are in the midst of their Tough Love Tour of Canada, in support of the EP of the same name, and they should leave a good impression with their bluesy rock originals, so don't bypass them on Sunday! Local alternative hard rock trio The Din will make a rare appearance at The New A as openers, while the official Facebook event page has listed a second opening band as "to be announced" since being first publicized. No word on if there will be two opening acts or not, but this show hasn't gotten a lot of plugs online lately, possibly due to promoters Six, Two, Oh.'s focus on last night's Castle concert. In any event, this 19+ show has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time. See above for more details, and here's Bloody Diamonds live last year in concert!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Still Of The Night & Stiffler's Mom), New Videos, And More!!

Here's a new news post for your Saturday afternoon, and while we had planned to put this up tomorrow, we have a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so let's lead off with that! Also today, we have another new show, some new live concert videos, and more assorted notes, so here's what you should know!

Local hard/party rock trio Stiffler's Mom will hit the stage TONIGHT for one night only at The Rockstar Bar! Apologies for the short notice, the band only acknowledged the show on their Facebook page this afternoon, and the venue's Facebook group only confirmed the show online today as well. A one-nighter due to last night's show from newer dance rock cover band The Killer Hooks (featuring Gsis Murphy & Midpoint alumni), this will mark Greg, Mike, and Jon's first show together since rocking Rotaryfest's main stage last month, and their first announced Rockstar Bar stop since the spring. Stiffler's Mom should be raring to go with their fan favourite covers and high energy TONIGHT, so don't miss out at The Rockstar Bar on this fairly quiet weekend for hard rock shows! There is no announced cover TONIGHT, you must be 19 or older to attend, and a 10:30 PM start time is likely. See above for more, and here's Stiffler's Mom live!

Next up, here's another new show announcement for The Rockstar Bar, as Southern Ontario-based Whitesnake tribute band Still of the Night will rock Sault Ste. Marie for the first time on Saturday, October 1st! Self-described as "Canada's premier Whitesnake tribute", Still of the Night definitely provide a faithful take on the David Coverdale-led band's classic material, and given how well attended The Rockstar Bar's tribute concerts usually are, this one should be in the same vein! Of course, many local fans did see the real Whitesnake in Sault Michigan in August 2011, but if you've missed them in the past 5+ years, this is the next best thing! Like the venue's other tribute shows, there will be advance ticket sales at The Algonquin Hotel's front desk, but prices have not been announced yet (for reference, this year's cancelled Hells Bells show cost $12.) A 9:00 PM start time is advertised for this 19+ event, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and stay tuned for updates!

Also today, here's some new live videos of Kinross, Michigan classic/hard rock trio Banned from a private out of town function last night! Uniquely streamed live to their Facebook page during the show, these were filmed at an event for Northwind Services in Iron River, which is in the Western Upper Peninsula. One video is a cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues", notably featuring bassist Wayne Lawrence on lead vocals, but embedded below is their cover of Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box" with guitarist Alex Traynor in his regular singing role. Dancing attendees can get in the way of the band at times, and the square dimensions are a little Instagram-ish, but Banned sound reliably good and diverse on these clips, and had I known that the band was experimenting with a live stream, I'd have acknowledged it on here beforehand! Give the videos a look above & below, and best of luck to Banned as they complete their tour run in Gould City tonight!

Finally for today, here's three shorter assorted items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Stemming from yesterday's YouTube Channel Profile on this band, we have sadly deleted Sault Michigan hard rock trio Division of Sanity from our inactive band links due to the closure of their Facebook page in the past year. Though the band still has an online presence via YouTube and Soundcloud, that was their only formal band page, so I reluctantly had to delete them from our listings. Division of Sanity had promise, and hopefully Caine, Myke, and Gabe return in new projects down the road!
  • Sault Ontario goregrind/cybernoise solo project Malignant Neoplasm have resurfaced with a new digital EP! The Tyler Gibson-led studio act hadn't publically surfaced since "Kittens Have Crustys" was released over a year ago, but you can buy their newest 4 song release on a "name your price" model at their Bandcamp page, though note that the cover art and song titles may be seen as offensive. Give it a look if you want, and Malignant Neoplasm are back in our active band links!
  • THIS THURSDAY'S SNFU concert at The Rockstar Bar now has in-person ticket sales for $20 at both The Algonquin Hotel's front desk & at The Rad Zone, so if you didn't want to or couldn't buy yours online, keep both of these physical options in mind before next week! Also, promoter J.D. Pearce noted on the Facebook event page that this is the "last show" that he has booked for this year... no Halloween party? We'll keep you posted!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for much more news & notes next week! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: Dino Capriata

For our 25th straight day of SMS updates, we have this month's YouTube Channel Profile for you guys! As always, this monthly feature series looks at 1-3 YouTube channels with (at least) a 50% concentration of local metal/hard rock-relevant videos, featuring information, profiles, recommendations, and videos to check out from each! Today marks our first one-channel Sault Michigan profile in 10 months (even though the owner's from Sault Ontario), and if you're a major concertgoer across the river, this will definitely be appealing, so read on below for this month's YouTube Channel Profile! (Updated on October 15th, 2013)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
dino capriata (http://www.youtube.com/user/dfunker76)

Owner: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario resident Dino Capriata

Channel Timeline: Launched on April 29th, 2009; Videos posted from then through August 2011

Channel Summary: Despite being a resident of Sault Ontario, Dino's YouTube channel is entirely comprised of concert videos from The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino in 2009 & 2011! Attending at least five during his use of the channel (including three hard rock concerts), Dino launched his channel with four videos from the Staind/Hoobastank concert on April 28th, 2009, later adding to it with two videos from one of ZZ Top's shows here that September. After a hiatus of over a year for new videos, Dino returned with three 2011 videos from the Cinderella concert on April 14th, following up with one video of Loverboy's show there on June 3rd, and closing with a video of Whitesnake's local show on August 26th of that year.

Why Should You Watch: Because this is a quality resource of major Kewadin Casino concerts, even if three or four of them don't lean heavier! Though Dino's seats varied depending on the show, he has good camera work for the most part, and the audio of each band is pretty clear, so it's definitely a good spot to check out recent Dreammaker's Theater concert footage! Note however that Dino hasn't visibly used his channel in over a year & a half, in case that changes your mind on subscribing, but hopefully he'll film some more local concert footage at some point again!

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

staind at kewedin casino: For his first Kewadin concert videos, Dino uploaded four videos from the April 2009 show featuring Massachusetts hard rock notables Staind and California alt-rock openers Hoobastank, including two videos of each. All four are filmed at a far angle from the stage, which can be somewhat jittery, but luckily, his view of the stage is fairly clear, and the audio picks up well! The featured video here is a slightly more aggressive take of Staind's song "So Far Away" (plus crowd sing-along), while his other Staind video was of their hit "Right Here". The Hoobastank videos include their songs "My Turn" and "The Reason", but the latter doesn't seem to load on YouTube consistently.

dfunk 2: Though his most viewed video his his Loverboy clip, Dino's most watched metal performance video is of Pennsylvania glam metal quintet Cinderella playing their song "Nobody's Fool" at The Dreammaker's Theater on April 14th, 2011! One of three Cinderella videos that he shot (including their songs "Shake Me" & "Somebody Save Me"), Dino got a much closer angle of this show than he had for Staind, with a very clear & close viewpoint and nice quality audio that captures Cinderella's sound well for the most part, but if you prefer heavier songs, his other Cinderella videos will be more up your alley!

MOV02361.MPG: Dino's last concert video on his channel is of British metal legends Whitesnake playing their song "Bad Boys" at the Soo Kewadin in August 2011, and it's very similar to his Cinderella videos by his crowd placement (though maybe a bit further.) I like that he shot a song that wasn't one of their more overplayed hit singles, and though the audio lacks a bit, Whitesnake sound great on this heavier late 1980s track! However, this his only video from this concert, but other channels will hook you up if you want to see other local Whitesnake clips!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! Next month in this series, we'll return to Sault Ontario for another single-channel profile, as I've randomly selected YouTube user stumpypet1's channel, which features 4 videos from defunct local hard rock band Quite Frankly in late 2009! Should be enough for it's own self-contained profile, so watch out for that on or around April 20th, and stay tuned for Sunday night concert previews tomorrow, plus more news! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Still Of The Night & Frightlight), Plus New Videos & "Woods V" Reviews!!

I wasn't expecting to have another post so soon, but when news hits, you've gotta capitalize on it! Today, we have some more "Woods V" reviews, some new videos from some young local musicians, and starting things today, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for shows next month and THIS WEEKEND, so here's what you need to know!

We have another concert this weekend that I only just found about today, and if you've missed Whitesnake since their headlining concert at Kewadin Casino last August, then good news, as the next best thing is coming to Sault Ontario THIS SATURDAY! Toronto-based Whitesnake tribute band Still of the Night will rock The Canadian Nightclub on Saturday for a good long night's worth of Whitesnake classics, and even some David Coverdale-era Deep Purple, from what I can tell! I apologize for the late notice on this show, I only just heard about it on a radio ad on Rock 101 this morning, and The Canadian's Facebook group didn't acknowledge this concert until this afternoon. Details on this show aren't too prevalent online, but I believe a 10:00 PM start time is likely, you must be 19 to attend, and I'd expect a cover charge of around $5. Check the above links for more details! Late notice or not, The Canadian is always a good bet for bringing in talented touring Canadian tribute bands, and Still of the Night fit that mold well! Jon Munroe's singing isn't a perfect match for David Coverdale in his prime, but they have the sound down pretty well, and if you love Whitesnake or classic 1980s metal, you'll definitely not wanna miss this show on Saturday night! For a preview, here's a Still of the Night promotional video featuring clips of a few of their Whitesnake renditions!

Also in new concerts, remember last week when I alluded to a planned fundraising concert at The Canadian Nightclub that briefly had a Facebook event page before it was pulled? Well, I don't know what happened then, but it appears to still be a go, so here's the current details! As Frightlight frontman Johnny Pints revealed on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group yesterday, the band has scheduled a special all-ages fundraising concert at The Canadian on March 4th to raise money towards a tour vehicle, so Frightlight can do some tour dates and "bring the fright" to other cities. Depending on the number of bands, the show will run until 11:00 PM on that Sunday, with an undetermined start time. Currently confirmed to join Frightlight at this "Dead In The Van" event are local hardcore quintet As It Stands, classic metal rockers Late & Loud, Desbarats metal band Inhuman Methods (nice to see them increasing their local presence!), and Business Suit Trappers guitarist "Evil" Greg Callaghan in a solo set. More bands are to be confirmed, so contact Johnny at the above links for details if your band wants in on this event! Full details are expected to be released next week, so we should hear more on admission prices and times then, but I can confirm that the show will be licensed in addition to the all ages element.

Frightlight (and Fitswitch) have always been good for supporting causes at fundraising events, and they deserve the support to raise some funds towards some tour dates, so hopefully a huge turnout is there in March for this show! Depending on the size, this could be similar to notable concert events like the Rock 2 Roll skatepark fundraiser from the summer of 2008 at The Canadian, but we won't know the full scale of everything until next week. It sounds very promising already though, and you can definitely pencil me in to attend and support Frightlight! Stay tuned for more updates as they roll in!

Thirdly today, here's a recent discovery I came across on YouTube that you guys might be interested in. Yesterday, a YouTube user by the name of adamscovers posted three live cover videos onto his YouTube channel from a recent Hawkplugged (formerly Dunnplugged) performance at Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School, and two of the videos are hard rock covers! The newly posted videos (which joined a Foster The People cover from last month) are of covers of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter", Alice In Chains' "Rooster", and (as embedded below) Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown", so click each link to check them out! I don't know the performers in the videos, but there's three likely Superior Heights students playing in this band, and I assume one's name is Adam. They're definitely talented, though I find the verse singing on "Rooster" was a bit forced, and the zoom effects on the videos are well edited to emphasize certain band members! I'm curious to learn and hear more from these guys, so check out these new Hawkplugged performance videos above, and here's their cover of "Communication Breakdown"!

Finally for today, here's a few more reviews of "Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light" to check out! Last month, "merginator" of the metal blog Headbang or GTFO gave Woods of Ypres' last recorded CD a 4.5 out of 5 in a lengthy review, calling it an "emotional roller coaster" and "definitely fulfilling", while only knocking the song "Career Suicide (Is Not Suicide)" for being boring. It's a nice and well-worded review, so click here to check it out! This past Friday, Rob Liz from the metal site That Devil Music gave an overall favourable review to "Woods V", though the postmortem nature of the review definitely seemed to throw things on a loop. He called the CD "an audio painting full of styles and colours" and termed it "the band's masterpiece", while complimenting the Type O Negative influences and the album's haunting effect. Another solid review with lots of personal reflection, so check it out at this location! Lastly for this chunk of reviews, John Roach from the metal website Xplosive Metal gave "W5" a favourable review of his own last month, calling it a "must-buy" for doom metal fans that was worthy of purchase regardless of David Gold's death, while also complimenting David's vocals & the album's symphonic elements. Definitely another nice review, and it's great to see the first reviews of "Woods V" skewing positively, so check out his review by clicking here, and stay tuned for more "W5" CD reviews soon!

That's all for today, but I should see you guys at The Roosevelt Hotel TONIGHT for the 42nd Rosie metal night! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Monkey's Uncle & Swayze Train) And More Assorted News Stories!!

Let's help ring in the new year with our first proper news post of 2012! All of this is from late last year in terms of when it was announced, but hey, you get to some stories when you can, as it was a hectic end of the month. Today, we've got a new video and photos relating to major Kewadin Casino concerts, details on some local musicians' band member searches, and leading things off, here's some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!

Kewadin Casino's entertainment page has been updated again to reflect a few concerts at The Rapids Lounge through August, including the local returns of Monkey's Uncle to Kewadin Casino's bar! The talented local hard rock quartet was absent from Kewadin's schedule for the first three months of the year, leading to some questions about their status, but they'll definitely be rocking The Rapids Lounge for at least three weekends midway through 2012. That said, you can see them there on April 13th & 14th, June 1st & 2nd, and August 3rd & 4th, which doesn't seem as frequent for them as we're used to, though it's possible that they have more shows at other venues that we have yet to hear about. For reference sake, they'll be playing at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino in late March, as an idea of when they're returning from this likely break. That said, these six new local Monkey's Uncle concerts should be 21+ affairs with no cover charges and 19+ age limits. Check the above links for more details! It's good to see Monkey's Uncle alive & well, and hopefully big crowds show up for their shows this spring & summer! Stay tuned for more on Monkey's Uncle as it comes in!

The other new Kewadin Casino concerts at The Rapids Lounge are for local hard rock quintet Swayze Train, who have added an additional two weekends onto their 2012 concert schedule for Kewadin's bar & concert spot! The local supergroup will return to The Rapids Lounge on May 11th & 12th and June 13th & 14th to deliver their trademark sets of proficient hard rock covers, and you guys won't wanna miss them! Like with the Monkey's Uncle shows, there's no cover charge, likely 10:00 PM start times, and 21+ age limits for these four new concerts, similarly to Swayze Train's shows there this coming weekend & next month. Though neither band has confirmed the shows on their respective pages yet, check the above links for all current details! I wish Swayze Train would post some media online, but I know from what I've heard that they're very talented and will definitely rock this year, so don't miss them at The Rapids Lounge over the first half of 2012! As always, stay tuned for much more from Swayze Train as I hear it!

Thirdly today, let's stay in the vein of Kewadin Casino concerts with another new video from the Bret Michaels concert on Tuesday, but this time, it's from the Poison frontman's official YouTube channel! Just 77 seconds long, the video is of scattered footage from behind the stage showing an enthusiastic crowd and Bret moving and grooving (along with a Bret Michaels nutcracker?!) set to his solo song "Human Zoo", but I have to say, I'm underwhelmed by the video. Besides it's length, I wish they could have left the concert audio in, or at least synched it with "Human Zoo" if it was played at the show, but there's still some nice footage from the concert. Check out this new Bret Michaels video from his show on Tuesday below!

Finally for Kewadin-related posts, some new photos from recent Kewadin Casino concert meet & greets are now online! I wish these were better advertised online, as I'd plug them on the SMS in advance if they'd actually advertise them wider, but hey, there's some nice photos to check out! Among other newer Kewadin photos, albums of meet & greet photos with Joan Jett & Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale are now online to check out, so click the artist names above to see the posted photos! Nice overall, and everyone seems happy in the photos that are on Kewadin's website, but hopefully these get better advertising in the future. Stay tuned for more from Kewadin Casino metal & hard rock concerts as the year rolls on, including if Bret Michaels had a meet & greet or not last month!

And finally, here's four local metal/hard rock artists looking for musicians towards new local projects, and these are in alphabetical order by the name of the artist inquiring on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group, so click here for details if any of these bands interest you. Apologies for the lateness, but hopefully the word gets out, so read on for details!:
  • Half Past guitarist Alain Fletcher is looking to join or fill in with a local hard rock or metal band on guitar, and is open to both covers & originals. No word on how this may impact Half Past, but if you'd like to enlist Al for your project, click here to shoot him a message! He'd sure be an asset!
  • Blackberrys drummer Frank Cuglietta is looking for musicians to complete a new classic hard rock project that would cover bands like Y&T and Whitesnake. There's visible interest, but if you want to audition or inquire about further details, contact Frank at this location!
  • Blackwater bassist James Watterworth is looking to form a new experimental metal band as a singer. Honestly, his description of his singing style and what he's looking for in musicians is so hard to sum up that I can't do it justice, but click here and scroll to his post on December 6th to check it out. If you're interested, visit this link to inquire about the band!
  • Local metal multi-instrumentalist Mitch Sirie (The Bear Hunters/Borderline Divine/April Eyes) is staying busy with yet another project, this time a progressive death metal project that would cover bands like Dream Theater, Opeth, and Mastodon. Specifically, he wants a drummer, but I don't know who else (if anyone) is connected with this project. Click here to contact Mitch if you're interested in trying out!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our next "Where Are The New Albums?" post tomorrow, and for much more news in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

Local Metal Video Showcase!!

Hey there local metalheads, I have another local metal video showcase for you guys today! In this post, I've found new videos from a recent major Kewadin Casino concert, new jam session footage from a local guitarist, new original audio material from another local six string slayer, and a newly posted archive album for you guys to stream, so here's what you should know!

A new video from August 26th's Whitesnake concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino is now online! This comes from YouTube user jcpeck76, who was the uploader of a video of Whitesnake playing "Still of the Night" that you may have saw last month. I'm not sure why this one took so long to get uploaded, but no worries! Like two earlier videos from the concert, this is of drummer Brian Tichy's drum solo, and it's not bad in quality! It's the furthest from the stage and has slightly washed out colour, but the camera's centered well with Brian's drumkit, and everything's clear enough! I still prefer gmanohio1's video of Brian's drum solo for length and quality, and Joelle Aikens' video is longer and good quality too, but jcpeck76's certainly isn't bad, and it's nice to get another view of this very cool drum solo! Check out the newest Whitesnake video below, and stay tuned for more Kewadin Casino hard rock concert videos as I find them!

Next up, here's the latest videos from former Bring The Fallen/Misery and AtrophiA guitarist Dan Souliere, who just launched his own YouTube channel on Sunday! Dan posted four videos from a Saturday jam session that he had with Brantford drummer Nick Misurka on there over the weekend, with each one labelled as part of an "LOF jam". Is L.O.F. a new band name acronym, or is there another meaning to that? I don't know either way, but this is apparently the first time that Dan and Nick have jammed in three years! How do the videos sound? Pretty good, they have good chemistry, and there's lots of thrash and death metal riffing going on! Nick's a talented drummer too, it'd be interesting to see him and Dan in a band together if it was a possibility! Click here to check out all four parts of the jam, and give the first part a look below!

Thirdly, here's some new videos from Sneaky Pete guitarist Mario Carlucci! Over the past couple of weeks, he's uploaded some solo instrumental material onto his YouTube channel, so I thought now's as good a time as any to share them with you guys! One is some instrumental hard rock harmony guitar riffs which sound pretty good and have a nice melodic quality while still having some bite to them! Mario also uploaded a track called "Bayou Blues" which is a slower blues solo track, but he has some nice licks and solo parts in this one! The other track is "Full Moon Ballad" which is also really proficient and entertaining, but it's not as tender and soft as he made it sound. Very good stuff all around, it'd be interesting to see him expand on these more, possibly into Sneaky Pete originals? Check the above links for more from Mario's YouTube channel, and here's "Full Moon Ballad", so see what you think!

And finally, as you may know, our next Defunct Local Band Profile is coming up on Monday, where we'll profile the inactive hardcore/punk quartet Detroit. In preparation for our look at the 2008-2010 band featuring three then-Lion Ride members, I'm doing something I haven't done in nine months, which is upload a full out of print local CD onto The Sault Metal Scene's YouTube channel! If you followed Detroit over the past few years, you'll know that they independently released two EPs, and the first was "Let The Hammers Fly" in December 2008, which was memorably launched at a CD release show at The Oddfellows Hall! "Let The Hammers Fly" featured 11 original songs (5 of which were re-recorded the next year), and with a run time of around 16 minutes in total, you know this EP was fast and furious! Very entertaining album with lots of brutal moshing tracks (most with the familiar seven-hit drum intro), and if you enjoy fast paced and quick timed hardcore punk (especially like Maximum RNR), you'll definitely get a kick out of Detroit's first EP! As stated above, this album is out of print, and with the band inactive at present, I thought I should preserve "Let The Hammers Fly" online like it deserves. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED!!

That said, the whole "Let The Hammers Fly" EP can now be streamed at this location, or you can click here for a handy playlist I've made for just this album, which I've done with other full albums on the SMS channel. The first song, "Blue Collar" is embedded below, but give the rest of the EP a listen at the above links, and stay tuned, as I may have some more Detroit songs to share later this week!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news this week, including this week's classic video, weekend concert previews, and more! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Changing Waves), The Canadian's Return, And More Whitesnake Videos!!

It's time to break out some more news to end the month of August, our busiest month in terms of total posts since March! So today, we have some cool news from Woods of Ypres, two more videos from last Friday's Whitesnake concert, and kicking things off, a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you need to know!

The 31st Roosevelt Hotel metal night will go down TOMORROW as expected, as finally confirmed this morning on Dismembertainment's Facebook page, but who will be playing at the first metal night of September? Just two bands at present, including local hardcore quartet Changing Waves! A frequently seen sight at The Rosie on Thursdays, look for this fast rising band to deliver a high energy and very heavy set of originals and covers tomorrow night! The other confirmed band is local punk trio Redundant (featuring past & present members of Frightlight, Browbeat, and SIGHdEFECT), so even if they're more of a punk band, they have deep metal backgrounds and occasionally cover something heavier, so don't miss them! A third band is possible, but not a guarantee, so if I hear anything on that front, I'll let you guys know! This show will have a 10:00 PM-ish start time, a 19+ age limit, and will have no cover charge unless we hear anything late about an out of town band being added, then there'd probably be one. Check the above links for more details! Should be a good show, hopefully Changing Waves and Redundant rock the house! Head to The Rosie tomorrow night if you can!

Next up, The Canadian Nightclub is coming back, and sooner than I had imagined! The Pim Street bar downstairs from The Canadian Motor Hotel has been out of commission since July 18th due to massive flooding that took place during the major storm we had that weekend, but after seven weeks of cleanup and renovations, The Canadian will reopen on September 6th with a "Back 2 School Bash" with your usual Tuesday specials like drink deals, DJs, and other fun events, but likely on a higher scale due to the reopening. The Facebook event page hypes that The Canadian has a "fresh new look", marking the second time in three years that The Canadian has been redesigned, though basically out of necessity this time around. Dance parties are also scheduled for next Thursday and Saturday as well, as per Facebook event pages I've been invited to. I know those events don't directly correlate to the Sault Metal Scene, but The Canadian's return does, and I'm glad to hear things are coming together so quickly! Kudos to everyone at The Canadian for all of their hard work over the past month and a half, and hopefully everything's in the clear for the forseeable future!

As for metal and hard rock concerts at The Canadian, the only ones I know of that have been announced for September to date were Full Circle's shows there on September 16th & 17th, which were coincidentally also the last shows listed on the old Turner Up Facebook group's concert schedule. Will those go on as scheduled, or will they be moved? Time will tell, but keep an eye out for details!

We'll close today with some more new videos from Whitesnake's headlining concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino from this past Friday, and first, here's another video of Whitesnake playing their classic single "Still of the Night"! Uploaded by YouTube user jcpeck76 yesterday, it was likely filmed because this is her and her husband's song, which is sweet! The audio's better than the intro makes it sound, but like from the earlier "Still of the Night" videos we've seen, the band are definitely downtuned from the classic days. Nice and close for the filming though, the video's much longer than the others I've seen of this song, and the quality isn't bad, so check out Whitesnake playing "Still of the Night" at Kewadin Casino below!

Finally, here's another video of Whitesnake drummer Brian Tichy's drum solo from the Sault Michigan concert! Again, it's longer than the last drum solo video from this concert that we've seen, but it's also much better quality and more of a straight shot of Brian while he plays, so it's definitely worth watching! Gotta love a long, fast, and proficient drum solo, and Brian's one of the best in this genre, so check out his drum solo from Friday night below! Thanks to YouTube user gmanohio1 for uploading this on Monday!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes this week, including concert previews for the weekend, this week's classic video, our "Where Are The New Albums?" post on Friday, and much more! Thanks everyone!

More Whitesnake Videos, Woods Of Ypres News, And More!!

The news keeps rolling in, and actually, today's post is quite similar to yesterday's in content, with Tym Morrison and Whitesnake taking up most of the stories! Add some Woods of Ypres updates too, and things are shaping up nicely for today, so let's end the weekend right with some big news! Here's what you need to know!

We'll start with some more new videos from Friday night's Whitesnake concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino, and let's open with some great videos from Wawa author Duane Roy ("Soo Stories" & "Castle Stories"), who is a frequent sight at major local hard rock concerts like this! Duane filmed at least four videos at the concert, which have been split among his Flickr page and his YouTube channel, oddly enough. His YouTube channel just has his video of Whitesnake playing their classic song "Here I Go Again", while he posted clips of Whitesnake playing "Bad Boys", "Love Ain't No Stranger", and "Still of the Night" on Flickr, though none of the Flickr videos are of the full song, mostly lasting around a minute each. The quality's really nice, and though David Coverdale is the focal point of the videos, he basically is Whitesnake, so it works out. Everything looks nice, Duane was close to the stage, and it's cool hearing the audience sing along with "Here I Go Again" like it's second nature to them! Great footage, definitely check it all out at the above links, and here's Whitesnake playing "Here I Go Again" in Sault Michigan on Friday night!

The other new Whitesnake videos I've came across are from YouTube user Joelle Aikens, who you may remember as an uploader of videos from Kewadin Casino concerts featuring Staind and Firehouse (openers for Skid Row) from the past few years. Well, she made it to the Whitesnake concert as well, and got two videos for us, including the band playing "Still of the Night" and drummer Brian Tichy's drum solo! Joelle was right at the front row in front of Doug Aldrich, and she gets some nice angles of the band, though her camera does fall short a bit for audio quality. Whitesnake sound good, if downtuned from the original version of "Still of the Night", and Brian Tichy's solo is awesome and actually the longest of her Whitesnake videos, so drum solo fans should love this one! Kudos to Joelle for uploading these yesterday, so visit her YouTube channel to check them out, and here's "Still of the Night" from this past Friday!

Now to some Woods of Ypres news from the last little while! Sessions for "Woods V" appear to have wrapped up, with producer Siegfried Meier tweeting on Wednesday that this was their final day at Beach Road Studios, including the photo on your right of him with David Gold and Joel Violette. David himself commented to say that the tunes are "MASSIVE", this could be the band's first 10/10 record, and that it's the best record they've ever done (read his quote at this location.) Now there's some great news, I can't wait to hear the finished product! So while we wait for "Woods V", the band has officially launched a search for a new bassist and drummer to replace the Madden brothers, who suddenly parted ways with the band in June. The only visible conditions must be that you're able to play shows, tour, and record with Woods of Ypres, so if you're at all interested in trying out to join Woods of Ypres as their new bassist or drummer, send a serious inquiry to davidypres@gmail.com (source here.) This could be a big opportunity for some musicians out there, local or otherwise, so if you have the talent to play some blackened doom metal, give David a shout and show him what you can do! Stay tuned to the SMS for more Woods of Ypres news as I hear it!

And finally, you know how Tym Morrison's been playing at Service Grill Pizza on Saturdays since late June? Well, the Caveman Morrison frontman is featured in a new video article & interview posted yesterday by Local2 (the former SooNews.ca) which you can now read at this location! Credited as "Caveman Tym Morrison" in the video, it shows Tym playing Heart's "Alone" (same as the Full Circle clip from Rotaryfest) at the Service Grill at what looks like their outdoor patio, which is likely where he is each week. We get the full performance, sort of, as the middle part is overlayed with an interview with Local2's Mike Caruso where Tym talks about his solo project, Caveman Morrison, how long he's been playing guitar, his album, and his musical genres. Nice interview, and Tym gets time to add in extra notes about his music, so it's definitely worth checking out! The article itself seemed to suggest more emphasis on the Service Grill itself though, and the video actually starts with Service Grill owner Mike LaRue talking about the renovations, hours, and menu at the Korah Road restaurant. The article itself also mentions that the Service Grill plans to bring in more musicians too, which should be interesting! I'm surprised that an article hyping the venue didn't talk much about it, but it's still worth checking out!

I can't embed the video here, but click here to check the video out and move to 1:08 in the video for Tym's portion, which more or less runs the rest of the video. Stay tuned for more from Tym and Caveman Morrison as it comes in! That's all for today, but I do tentatively have our review of Sykotyk Rampage's latest album "Zombies" pencilled in for tomorrow, so stay tuned for that! Thanks everyone!

SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), The First Whitesnake Fallout, And More!!

After a couple days of previews and profiles, it's back to the news today on this last weekend of August, and today, we have the first videos from yesterday's Whitesnake concert and more assorted news, but first, here's a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will in fact be playing an acoustic solo concert at Service Grill Pizza TODAY! Apologies for the short notice, Tym only announced the show last night, which is oddly late, but better late than never! As has generally been the case each Saturday since late June, Tym will be on for two sets today at 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the Korah Road restaurant, where you can expect some great and proficient covers of your favourite hard rock hits in a more intimate setting! There's no announced cover charge, and I expect both sets to be all ages. No word yet on if his weekly arrangement at the Service Grill will continue into September, though remember that when this originally started, it was just for every Saturday "this summer", so I guess we'll have to see if he'll be back there next weekend or not. For more details on TODAY'S sets, visit the official Facebook event page, and click here for details on his show in Hilton Beach on St. Joseph Island tomorrow, in case you wanna make a road trip! Sounds like fun, and hopefully a big crowd turns out to see Tym in action, so head to the Service Grill TODAY!! For a preview, here's Tym covering Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" at Foggy Notions in 2009!

Next up, here's the first videos from last night's Whitesnake concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino! We'll start with one from YouTube user dfunker76, who's been a good source of Kewadin concert footage since 2009, including some nice videos from the Staind and Cinderella shows there. Well, he was at the Whitesnake concert, and filmed at least one video there, and it's now on his YouTube channel! Though a song name isn't given, the video's of Whitesnake playing their classic song "Bad Boys", and it's not bad quality! He got a good spot to film the band, and you see everything well! Audio lacks a bit, but you can at least make out everything decently well. The band sounds good, David Coverdale still sounds great, and if they sounded like this for the whole show, I reckon it'd be hard to complain! Check out Whitesnake playing "Bad Boys" in Sault Michigan last night, and stay tuned in case dfunker76 has any more videos from the show for us!

The other video is actually the first one I saw, and it comes from YouTube user Dwayne Lehn, who posted this onto his YouTube channel last night. He filmed Whitesnake guitarist Reb Beach's guitar solo at the concert, and you can watch it below! Not the best quality video, with a very dark side stage angle and distorted audio, but you can still hear Reb's talents through the technical limitations! If you wanna see Reb's solo last night, watch it below, and stay tuned to the SMS for more Whitesnake concert fallout as I hear it!

And finally for today, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last while, and as always, they're in alphabetical order by band or event name:
  • You may be aware of a concert at 200 Maple Street in Thessalon TONIGHT with Ottawa metal band Biipiigwan, Thessalon's own For All That Is Lost, locals The Bear Hunters & Shit Liver, and two mystery bands. Though not confirmed, it looks like one will feature ex-members of Bring The Misery, as their Facebook page plugged the show saying that "random members" would be playing. If I had to guess, I'd assume some band members are playing in one or both mystery bands, but this doesn't look like anything more than a one off. If I hear more, I'll let you guys know, and click here for show details!
  • Four new acts have been confirmed for the Searchmont Music Festival on September 10th, including local big band The Reptiles, Blackwater frontman Cody McMillan, a blues act of some kind named Tuff Gig, and local burlesque troupe The Salty Mollies. They should be good additions, metal or not, so keep an eye out for them at the festival!
  • I have removed defunct comedy metal project T.E.N. from our inactive Sault Ontario band links, as their Facebook page was quietly deleted earlier this month, and there's no alternative pages to replace it that I know of. Disappointing, but check out two of their demos at this location and best of luck to their old members!
That's all for now, but stay tuned for more Whitesnake fallout, some "Woods V" updates, our review of Sykotyk Rampage's "Zombies", and much more very soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Full Circle) And This Weekend's Concert Previews, Including Whitesnake!!

It's time to preview this weekend's concerts on the heavier side of the local spectrum! This weekend is short in volume of shows (at least right now), but there's some big name bands playing this weekend, including a major Kewadin Casino concert (possibly a Tym Morrison solo show too, but he hasn't confirmed a possible Service Grill concert for Saturday yet.) To start though, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for this weekend!

Local classic hard rock quartet Full Circle are on the scene this weekend for a Saturday night concert at Foggy Notions! Previously unlisted on the now deleted Turner Up Facebook group's concert listings, the band are only playing on Saturday, as the previously announced show for tomorrow night has been cancelled for unannounced reasons (for what it's worth, I haven't heard of a concert or event of any type for Foggy's tomorrow, in case that was why.) So if you want to end August with Full Circle, you'll have to go Saturday! Admission should be free for this show (there could be a nominal cover charge though), you must be 19 to attend, and it all starts at 10:30 PM on Saturday night. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Even if their usual weekend is halved, Full Circle will have a great set of rocking hits for their fans on Saturday, so head down to Foggy Notions for all the excitement! For a preview, click here and move to 13:20 of the video to see Full Circle cover of Heart's "Alone" from their set at this year's Rotaryfest!

Now to the previously announced shows, and first, it's the 30th Roosevelt Hotel metal night!! Intentionally for this milestone or not, Dismembertainment have booked a stellar lineup of metal bands for TONIGHT, so here's who to look out for! Winnipeg death metal sextet Laika will headline tonight's show with a melodic and folk influenced brand of death metal that's guaranteed to melt faces and impress musically at the same time! Don't miss them, you'll absolutely enjoy them! Backing them up on this stop on their "Tour of Redundancy Tour" will be Winnipeg extreme progressive band Annex Theory, who you may recognize as being the current band from former Quo Vadis singer Trevor Birnie! Very technical and creative sound amidst the wall of brutality they'll bring tonight, so definitely check them out as well! Also playing tomorrow in the midst of their own summer tour are local favourites Thekillingfield! The North Bay tech metal trio are sure to be eagerly welcomed back to the Soo tonight for another high impact set of extreme sounds and hopefully some huge pits, so let's welcome them back in style! Finally, local grimecore trio Shit Liver will add some local flavour as the concert's openers tonight, so get ready for some crust and death metal to kick things off in a heavy fashion!

A $6 cover will be in effect for this show, but for these 18 talented musicians, 3 awesome out of town bands, and one rising local band, that cash will be well spent at The Rosie tonight! Shit Liver will open the concert at 9:30 PM, and you must be 19 to attend. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be an awesome and brutal concert, and here's hoping I can make it out! If not, you guys have a devastating night, and kill August with some death metal! For a preview, here's the video for Laika's original song "Dead March"!

Speaking of big shows, we have a huge one taking place TOMORROW NIGHT at The Dreammaker's Theater at Kewadin Casino across the river, and if you're into some classic 1980s metal, get ready, as Whitesnake are coming to town! The British hard rock legends (as led by the one and only David Coverdale) will hit Kewadin Casino tomorrow on their Forevermore tour in support of their new album of the same name, in what I think is their first ever show here in the Sault area! Of course, Whitesnake have sold millions of records worldwide, and will be sure to play hits like "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love", "Fool For Your Loving", "Still Of The Night", and "The Deeper The Love" for their fans at this concert! This should be a great show, and their newer stuff is really good, so if you love Whitesnake, you'll wanna see them tomorrow night! I don't know if there will be an opening band, and even though I've seen nothing to suggest one, I have been wrong before (as in the Ace Frehley concert), so if I hear about an opening band, I'll let you guys know! Luckily though, if you don't have your ticket yet, I have good news, as they are still on sale!

Tickets are still available for $54 American at this location, at the Kewadin box office, or by calling 1-800-KEWADIN. When I checked, there was still reserved seating, but all general admission tickets are taken save for standing room only, so make note of that if you try and get a ticket. The show starts at 7:00 PM tomorrow night, and as this is a Dreammaker's Theater show, it should be all ages. Check the above links for more details! Whitesnake should deliver a great set tomorrow, and hopefully lots of fans are there to see this legendary band in action! Stay tuned for more on this show and it's aftermath, and for a preview, here's Whitesnake's video for their classic single "Still Of The Night"!

And finally for this weekend, we have a couple more shows at Kewadin Casino this weekend, as local hard rockers Monkey's Uncle will hit the stage at The Rapids Lounge tomorrow night & Saturday night for some solid sets of covers and possibly originals! If you're in for some more music after Whitesnake, or just want some free entertainment at the lounge, Monkey's Uncle will surely have you covered this weekend! The talented quartet should be on at roughly 9:00 PM both nights, there's no cover charge, and you must be 21 to enter The Rapids Lounge for either night. Check the above links for more details! Monkey's Uncle will surely deliver a solid weekend of hard rock to their fans over the next couple of nights, so if you're across the river, don't miss them! I just wish they updated their pages more, I'm sure there's new developments and media we could check out! Oh well, hopefully one day! For a preview, here's Monkey's Uncle covering Nazareth's "Hair Of The Dog" in 2008 in St. Ignace!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more soon, including maybe a review of tonight's Rosie metal night (I hope), our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on Infathom, our review of Sykotyk Rampage's "Zombies", and more! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Whitesnake, WinkStinger, And Woods of Ypres) And More News!!

Hey guys, here's a new news post just as I promised this morning! This one is actually pretty stacked, more than I assumed initially, so you'll get a good filling of local metal stories with this post! Today, we have news on an upcoming book that should interest many of you, a concert cancellation, and a band addition for a concert TOMORROW, but first, here's three LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! All involve headlining bands whose names start with the letter W, but unlike usual, we won't start in chronological order, as one of these shows is quite major! Here's what you need to know!

British hard rock legends Whitesnake are coming to Kewadin Casino this summer! Yes, the David Coverdale-led quintet best known for hits like "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love", and "Fool For Your Loving" will make their way to The Dreammakers Theater on August 26th on their upcoming American tour in support of their upcoming new album "Forevermore"! I think this is their first ever show in the twin Saults, but don't quote me, I could have missed one. This is the second classic metal show at Kewadin Casino this year, following Cinderella next month, so if you love the old stuff, then the good news keeps coming! No word yet on if there will be opening bands, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least one. It will be a 7:00 PM concert, and I assume it's all ages, but ticket prices have not been revealed yet. They'll go on sale at the Kewadin box office, at 1-800-KEWADIN, and online at this location on March 1st, so mark that date on your calendars! Thanks to The Sault Star's article on this show for the information! This sounds like a very intriguing concert, and there's sure to be plenty of Whitesnake fans locally to help make this show a success! Good way to end the summer too, if I may say so! Stay tuned for updates as I hear them, and remember, tickets go on sale on March 1st!

Now for the remaining new shows, and we'll start with one taking place this month! In what is amusingly being dubbed "The Gayest Show On Earth", two metal bands will hit Foggy Notions one week from Friday (February 25th) for a hard hitting concert! The headliners are extreme metal quintet WinkStinger, in what will be (I think) their first headlining concert of 2011! Good to see, they'll surely tear up the stage at this show! Joining them as the supporting band will be local grimecore trio Shit Liver, whose brand of crusty death/punk will be sure to set a heavy tone for the evening! This concert has a 10:00 PM start time, a 19+ age limit, and no listed cover charge. For more details (and for some amusing posts related to the show), head to the official Facebook event page! Sounds like a fun show, almost like a Rosie metal night show with one less band and at a different venue. It's always good to see a healthy sense of humour as well, and WinkStinger should bring it in spades! Remember to hit this show if you can, and I'll have updates on it if news comes in!

Finally for new shows, how about another local dose of Woods of Ypres? Just two months after their return to our burial ground on March 10th, David Gold and company will return to The Roosevelt Hotel on May 13th on the opening show of their Western Canada tour! The joys of our location, we can be considered part of Eastern and Western Canada without much hassle! Unlike their show next month though, the May 13th show won't be on one of the Rosie metal nights. It'll actually be on a Friday, which is a good concert night regardless! Details on this show haven't came out beyond this, but the show is confirmed via the tour topic on Woods of Ypres' official forum. I imagine it will have a 10:00 PM-ish start time, a 19+ age limit, and no cover charge. I'll of course have details as they leak in, but this is great news for local Woods of Ypres fans! I say this makes up for the lack of a local show last year, wouldn't you? Hopefully I can hit both of these shows, and make sure to make note of them! Cant beat blackened doom metal like this! I have much more on Woods of Ypres to share very soon, so keep an eye out!

Next up, here's a combination of stories revolving around the same local band. If you've been wondering why there hasn't been any updates concerning the all ages show on Saturday featuring Right From The Start, Calling Ocala, and local hardcore bands As It Stands and Changing Waves, here's why. The concert was quietly cancelled at some point in the last few months, as evidenced by the deletion of the event page and any trace of it's existence from the promoters' pages. Why? I don't know, but it's disappointing for fans of pop rock and hardcore! With that said, Changing Waves will still be busy this weekend, as they are the third and final confirmed band for TOMORROW'S metal night at The Roosevelt Hotel! This will be their first ever 19+ show (to my knowledge), and hopefully they'll attract lots of new fans when they open up tomorrow's show at The Rosie! As for the lineup order, The Bear Hunters are headlining and Shit Liver are in the middle. Stay tuned for more on this concert in tomorrow's weekend concert previews! My source for this info is the Rosie metal nights' Facebook page.

Finally for today, here's a cool note on an upcoming book we've mentioned here and there on the SMS! In November 2009, you may remember when Wawa author Duane Roy released "Castle Stories: A Rock N' Roll Scrapbook", which detailed his concert memories and stories from major metal shows at Charlevoix's old Castle Farms outdoor venue, including a healthy amount of local references. Well, it's known that Duane's followup book was going to be a similar collection of concert stories, this time from Sault Memorial Gardens, the old hockey arena/concert venue that The Essar Center replaced in 2006. Almost a year and a half later, we're inching closer to it's release, so I thought I should alert you guys to some of what to expect! It will be called "Soo Stories: A Rock N' Roll Scrapbook", and it should have similar themes and sections compared to "Castle Stories" from the rock concerts held there, be they Duane's stories and memorabilia, or others! I just hope the pictures are higher resolution, that was my major issue with his last book. Apparently, the first chapter will be Duane's story from Ted Nugent's show at the Gardens, but there's bound to be much more than that! Stay tuned for updates on when "Soo Stories" comes out, as this is sure to be a great read! And thanks to Duane's personal Facebook page for some of the above information!

That's all for today, but stay tuned tomorrow for weekend concert previews and our Saultites in Out Of Town Bands Profile on Maximum RNR! Thanks everyone!
