Local Metal Video Showcase!!

In our likely last post of the month (as I always take my birthday off),  we're looking at some videos from our recent backlog, and let's start with updates from local/Barrie crossover thrash quintet Spades GT starting with an advance review of their upcoming album "Sewer City Radio"! Surprisingly, this comes by way of Japanese music website Upp-Tone Music, and don't worry, it is in English, if slightly broken. The advance review looks at "Hands", "XS", and the not-yet-released "Red", and while I don't want to skew my opinion of those songs given that I do plan to review the album myself, the review is positive, calling Spades GT "a ray of hope for the future of rock and metal". Good to see them getting notices way out east, so read it for yourself above! The album is still on track for a release on Friday, but one more advance single was posted last week, namely "Succubus", so click there to give it a spin!

Again, I'll hold comment on the song pending our review of "Sewer City Radio", which is currently pencilled in for September, assuming that the release date holds. Embedded below is something a little more visual than a still album cover, namely a 15 second behind the scenes teaser for their "Final Girl" music video from their Facebook page that kinda has to drop soon if they want it to coincide with the album release! The clip features director Josh Penno filming the video's lead actress sitting on a swing, with an axe wielding maniac (played by bassist James Roy Daley) on the prowl. The full video should be interesting, so stay tuned for more on it & the album, and get more from Spades GT above & below!

Next up, let's take a look at some new live concert videos from from new local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations' Facebook group! The band is not playing public shows this weekend, but you can relive this past Saturday's Esquire Club gigs via two new videos, including one filmed for attendee Christopher Bardawill's personal Facebook page (and publically shared by drummer Tony Santoro) of them covering Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" with guitarist Brandon Ruch on lead vocals. Alas, the video was shot vertically, but Christopher got an interesting side-stage angle focusing primarily on Brandon, so that much is fitting with him singing this one! It's a solid cover that Dire Straits fans should like!

Embedded below is a video shot by an uncredited attendee and posted directly by Tony, and while much shorter (45 seconds), I'm featuring it here for three reasons: It was filmed horizontally, it's an official band upload rather than a share, and the song in question (Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot") at least leans towards hard rock moreso. Valerie Powley sings lead on this cover and does a fine job from what we hear, though the filmer's angle means that Tony is out of view for the duration. Give these a watch above and below, and stay tuned for more from Generations!

Also, here's a brand new video from St. Ignace, Michigan metalcore band Heavy Lies The Crown's YouTube channel yesterday, which was posted to showcase drummer Jaxon Massaway's new Mapex Mars drumkit and Zildjian cymbals! The 78 seconds-long, multi-camera video features Jaxon (a.k.a."the kid") testing the equipment out, alongside still shots of the drums without a user in the way, and some outdoor scenery to boot. If you like drum solos, then you'll get a good one here, and this is a good way to show off Jaxon's abilities even beyond the kit, so give it a watch below!

Finally, here's a new video from Sault Ontario hard rock guitarist Mike McCleary's YouTube channel! We haven't heard much from Mike since he released his instrumental album "Fallout From Midnight Tides" in April, but he posted a new lyric video for his song "Be The One" (from 2018's "Weight Of The Truth") earlier this month. You may recall that Mike had a much more animated lyric video featuring stock footage lined up with the lyrics, but both of his extant videos on YouTube have been de-listed, and this new lyric video is now all that's shown. It's just white lyrics on a black background, but its lyrics about his mental illness struggle and the grungy sound still work, so give it a watch below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews and more on the site next month! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: Brad Example

For our last monthly feature post of May 2023, here's this month's delayed YouTube Channel Profile, yet another spotlight on a YouTube account whose videos are at least half relevant to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists and/or concerts! This month's randomly selected channel gives us a very familiar face in both his best known band work and in more recent solo confines, so here's what you should know!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brad Example (http://youtube.com/@bradexample)

Owner: Former Inner City Surfers bassist and Role Models frontman Brad "Example" Lacell, also known from bands like Love & Rehab and Room 206, as well as his Atikokan-based solo project

Channel Timeline: Launched on November 25th, 2006; Current videos posted from October 2011 through November 2022

Channel Summary: Brad's channel encompasses both his solo folk music after moving from the Soo and his more prominent punk band work here, as well as some non-musical content. 40 videos are uploaded here to date, with just over half of them revolving around his own solo material. 13 of his uploads are songs from his local bands, with the remainder being personal uploads focusing around family, animals, or nature. Listed separately from his individual uploads are automated copies of the Inner City Surfers' back catalog to date (all automatically generated through DistroKid), plus this "Short" video of a acoustic trio jam.

Why You Should Watch: Fans of Brad's music will be interested in his channel for the modern-day solo music than for the local punk songs, as there's a lot to like here for fans of his raspy singing voice and his folksy modern music, which often feature guest appearances from familiar Saultite faces! Surfers fans will like the hosting of their studio material ("Let's Go Greyhounds" aside), but only one of those albums was actually uploaded directly by Brad before bringing their albums to streaming services.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

ROOM 206-LAST STANCE: The only upload here from Brad's local band work that isn't of the Surfers came via his old local punk band Room 206, who reunited to record the song "Last Stance" for the 2003 compilation CD "Junk In The Trunk", as released by the original, more punk-centric version of Tidal Records. Full band member credits aren't given in the liner notes, but Brad and singer/guitarist Mike Yorke are credited as writers of the track. Set to a slideshow of concert posters and band images, the skate punk intensity and strong energy are on full display, and I really should talk about this compilation on the site at some point! Note that this song was not on their 1994 tape "2 Innies & An Outie", nor its 2021 vinyl re-release.

INNER CITY SURFERS - BOOZE 'N DOOBS: Brad's most popular upload is his old local punk band The Inner City Surfers' classic song "Booze 'N Doobs", specifically the re-recording from their 2007 self-titled CD (a.k.a. "The Black Album"), which was part of his uploading that entire album to YouTube in 2016 before batch uploading the rest with DistroKid. Joined as always by singer/guitarist Dustin Jones, guitarist Dave Bahun, and drummer Mikey Hawdon, this is more of a country tinged drinking song that very much caught on with fans in a live setting, and while I like my Surfers punkier than this, it still has their tried and true flavour! Hear the original version of "Booze 'N Doobs" from 2002's "Laughing On The Outside" at this link.

Lemon Lips- BrADeXaMpLe featuring Dave Bahun and Phil Greco: There's no shortage of songs to pick from in terms of Brad's solo career, but I opted for one with a lot of local ties, namely "Lemon Lips", which features his old Role Models bandmates Dave Bahun (also of The Surfers) on guitar and Phil Greco (now of PROV3RB5 and The Saturday Nights) on drums. Set to a video of various wild west/cowboy imagery, this is as close to a "cowpunk" song as I've ever heard from a band not named The Billy Bastards, and while some of the backing instrumentation is a little meandering, Brad's gritty vocals fit the tone well, and the production is top notch! Brad doesn't often play straight punk solo, but give his material a listen, as there's a lot to like for folk and roots fans, let alone Surfers diehards!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! This series will return on or around June 26th for multiple randomly selected channels to be profiled, as the first that I selected only had three audio uploads of the same band, so I added a similarly lacking channel to fill things out. As such, we'll be looking at YouTube users panzertera (featuring songs from the short lived Sault Michigan metal band Great Bodily Harm) and Orb Hearthstone (featuring original solo music from Great Bodily Harm's very drummer). I swear I didn't plan this, happy coincidences happen here and there! Look for that then, and for more news this week! Thanks everyone!

Molten Imp & Crucify The Whore - "Pyrolytic Punishment" Split Review!!

It's now time for our 167th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, as we're looking at local industrial metal solo project Molten Imp and goregrind solo act Crucify The Whore's split "Pyrolytic Punishment"! Following a series of virtual singles from the former and 16 prior releases from the latter, the two acts came together for this split, released in full on February 12th across both bands' Bandcamp pages through C.T.W.'s label Blood Shed Productions. Recorded at each project's home studio, Molten Imp are represented as ever by ex-Algoma guitarist Boyd Rendell (a.k.a. Lord Unterbiss von Wigwaus), while C.T.W. are still led by Rotopsy/Brutally Fatal alum Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson. As each half was released separately by each act, "Pyrolytic Punishment" is on sale with two different pricepoints, being $7.50 on Molten Imp's end and on a "name your price" model for C.T.W.'s.

In that respect, the minimum you can pay for the whole album is $7.50, as "name your price" albums can be downloaded for free, but consider paying for C.T.W.'s half to support Tyler's work! Both halves can be streamed for free there as well. The album proper runs for about 44 minutes across 15 songs, so let's begin with Molten Imp's five song half!

The split opens with "Winter XX-XXII XX-XXIII" (2022-2023), which is the latest in Molten Imp's suite of "Winter" songs begun on prior singles. This is basically a dark synth soundscape for its first half before industrial effects pipe in that sound like a cyberpunk Jaws, even throwing a bit of the Winkies' chant from The Wizard of Oz in there, among other noises. I like my Molten Imp to have more guitar than this, but it definitely sets a tone, and it's on brand in that respect! Next is "Colorful Snow (More Acid)", which Boyd did not use the Canadian spelling of (i.e. "Colourful"), for what that's worth. The shortest track on this side, this is more of a proper song featuring sampled lyrics reflecting why the snow is colourful, plus someone asking for two spoons, and some very guttural & inaudible vocals that sound like they may as well be on the C.T.W. half! Musically, this is a drum & bass song with melodic (if harsh) synths.

This song is definitely more interesting and varied than the opener, and while not really a guitar showcase, it's certainly original with a good groove to it! Third is "Ankle Deep", which is by far the heaviest song on offer so far, complete with more of those guttural growls that popped up on "Colorful Snow". If it wasn't for the heavy effects on the track (which sounds like analog TV static), this would be a good grindcore song foundation! It's also a slowly paced track, which will please old AlgomA fans. While this is my favourite song so far, it does stretch a little too long, and the static overtop does it no favours, especially with the vocals hard enough to make out. Fourth up is "Pedestrian Blues (EYEHATETRUCKS)", which is capitalized and spelled like that. I take it Boyd's an Eyehategod fan? If you hear the voice of Norm MacDonald, it's not just you, a Late Show with David Letterman interview with him is sampled throughout

Between the sampled bit about a car crash and the heavier industrial metal on offer to start, I was reminded of "Jesus Built My Hotrod" early, but that gets swapped out for a repetitive lower riff that gives me the vibe of a vehicle's ignition stalling over and over. It's a shame that the more interesting opening gave way to this, as it really drags until the last two minutes, with percussion-led aggression and heavily distorted growling that almost sounds like a vicious dog barking. Here, the drum track dictates too much of the pace, and I'd have upped the backing instruments, and not went back to the stalled ignition riff cutting in and out with a harsh tone. Good elements here but a very inconsistent number, not helped by this being Molten Imp's longest song on the split. Their half closes with a reprise of "Winter XX-XXII XX-XXIII", which is very similar to the original track #1, but is a little longer and has lighter (if still abrasive) effects.

You may hear some ghostly background chatter and slightly more discordant noise, but it has less of the marching qualities of the original, so side with your favourite here (also, I think Boyd forgot an I in "XX-XXIII" on track #1 on Bandcamp). Not my preferred Molten Imp style, but it does come full circle on their side of the split!

Before we move into Crucify The Whore's side of this split, I wanted to preface this by noting that this is my first ever proper review of one of their albums on the site, and it's not out of any malice or ill will towards Tyler or Blood Shed Productions. Honestly, from an early stage, I found C.T.W.'s studio material to be critic-proof as both art and as a personal statement, given the decidedly anti-commercial music on offer, the minimalist recording and performing setup, and their often defiantly controversial lyrics and cover artwork. To a point, I feared that there was only so much that I could say about C.T.W. as a studio project, given the heavy reliance on pig squealed vocals, a drum machine, often intentionally short song lengths, lo-fi recording methods, and the projected themes in their lyrics. Therein lies the challenge: reviewing a C.T.W. album without patronizing or coming off like an ill-informed schmuck. Fingers crossed that I pulled it off!

Song one on this side is "River Valley Slaughter", which is more of a straightforward metal track with a strong riff and clear recording quality (I know this has improved greatly from Tyler's early studio work), but the pig squealed vocals will not be to everyone's taste, and they recur frequently on C.T.W.'s albums. They are not loud in the mix, and sometimes sound more like a quiet motor, so make of that what you will. Musically, Tyler's talent as a metal composer is on good display here and he varies things well despite not playing a solo or anything! Next up is "Gash Basher" (I didn't title it!), which runs for an album-low 40 seconds in length. This is more of an experimental metal song with more prominent grunting and an abrupt closing sequence that feels like the song ended way too soon. Despite a brief guitar solo, this was a little too out there compared to what I like in death metal, especially for its brevity.

Third on this side is "Pan Handle Pimpin'", which opens with sampling of Dr. Phil McGraw dressing down a guest on his talk show, which basically replaces the vocals in the first half. In effect, this is a two halved song, with the sample heavy opening being more electronic based and the latter dipping into Tyler's goregrind wheelhouse. I definitely preferred the metal half, which has more of a structure to it than the preceding, and the vocals were better used there! Next is "Thanks For The Heads Up", the first of three straight sub-1:40 tracks. This one is a straightforward metal song that doesn't take any major chances and seems to end before it really gets going. Still solidly composed and entertaining for genre fans, but the pig squealing will be a liability for many. That is followed by "Fetal Rejection" (again, I didn't title it!), which shakes things up musically by merging some techno experimentation with a brief guitar solo.

The last 20 seconds of this is basically an ominous dissipation that will be silent at the wrong volume, so keep that in mind. There were some very interesting ideas here for more of a hybrid cybergrind track, but it ended way too soon. Song #6 is "Spending The Weekend Alone", which opens with 30 seconds of sampled audio from the Seinfeld episode "The Merv Griffin Show". The track proper chugs along at a good and steady pace with intense & fast drum programming (imagine if a real drummer was on this!) While short, this is one of my favourite songs compositionally on C.T.W.'s half! Next is "From Creation To Cremation", which is one of the longer and more fully realized songs on offer, with a stronger riff and structure and heavy breakdowns worthy of a old school Oddfellows Hall mosh pit! It ends somewhat abruptly, but if you want some live-ready grindcore intensity, this will do it, and it's a highlight on this side!

"What The Frig" is next, which runs for a little over 5 minutes, thusly C.T.W.'s longest cut here and an epic for their standards! This will please fans of Tyler's techno-inspired work early, though the first minute is largely focused around heavily pitched down samples of two guys talking. When the song dips into metal territory, news coverage of the 2019 Dayton, Ohio mass shooting is sampled extensively in the middle (shame that some of the best guitar work on the album is under that!) This is functionally an instrumental with no pig squealing whatsoever, and it gets into more experimental soundscape territory by the end. I'd have focused on the death metal middle and expanded that out without the sampling, but of course, provocative references to current events are not new to C.T.W.'s material and presentation, so keep that in mind. Inconsistent for my tastes but, again, Tyler musically shines in the middle here!

The penultimate song on the split is "A Death Worth Dying", which is a pure instrumental without even sampled dialogue. As a pure musical showcase of Tyler's skills and programming ability, it does the job in a relatively short span, and while he doesn't break out a solo here like on preceding cuts, the death metal attack comes through well with good pacing! "Pyrolytic Punishment" closes with "CxTxWx", another instrumental that chugs along through 108 seconds of death metal and does a fine job of it too! The riff is catchy and it feels like Tyler saved some of his best, straightforward metal for last here, so things end on a good note!

So, what are my closing thoughts on Molten Imp & Crucify The Whore's split? For my musical tastes, it's inconsistent on both sides, but there's a lot to like for genre fans who know what to expect! On the former side, Boyd stuck to his usual pattern of industrial electronica with hints of extreme metal, and while I didn't get much out of the "Winter" songs, the middle three straddled genre lines well, and I'd point fans to "Ankle Deep" as my favourite song on offer! Granted, I do prefer Boyd's prior work in bands like AlgomA and BeeFMouTH, but neither of those bands were as experimental and gave this much to talk about, so that counts for something! As for C.T.W., while I hadn't formally reviewed an album of theirs previously, I can safely say that Tyler has grown a ton as a musician in the past decade, and compared to their earliest material, you can see and hear it very clearly. It even shows in the cover artwork if you look at them all!

The vocals will be an acquired taste for most, that has been consistent right along, and there are still moments in the song names and sampling that will raise eyebrows, but goregrind isn't called that for nothing! For my tastes, I do prefer growled death metal vocals with enunciation, and I remember noting back in the day that the disparate 1-2 man bands on Blood Shed should have formed one great 4/5-piece death metal band, but Tyler's unapologetic solo music has developed an organic fanbase in the past decade, and I will say that if you haven't seen his live shows back when C.T.W. played live more often, the energy of concerts was a big part of their appeal for me. As far as these ten songs go, they were at their best when Tyler focused on a strong death metal song, with more experimental/techno songs falling off a bit, but your mileage may vary. I think I'd recommend the second half of this side, except "What The Frig", for casual death metal fans.

If you like the more abrasive, underground wings of death metal and industrial music, you'll find something to like from both Molten Imp & C.T.W., so buy/stream "Pyrolytic Punishment" at the above links, and I hope you guys liked this month's album review! We'll be looking at local noise punk duo No Funeral's debut EP next month, and stay tuned for this month's YouTube Channel Profile next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Rotaryfest Stage 2) And More Updates!!

Strike while the iron's hot, as they say, so let's wrap up our LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS concerning this year's Rotaryfest lineups, as well as some shorter recent updates to round things out. Here's what you should know!

As promised, here's what you should know about Rotaryfest's Stage 2 lineup for 2023! After a two year pandemic hiatus, the Second Stage returned to the Clergue Park stage beside the Art Gallery of Algoma last year with a new two night format, featuring the 2015-2019 Saturday lineup of original indie/alternative-leaning bands supplemented by a Friday Night Blues lineup curated by the Sault Blues Society. That appears to have went over well, as it's happening again in 2023! Like last year, there's no heavier bands playing on Friday, July 15th, with the expanded five band roster (revealed in this SooToday article) including the returning Rusty McCarthy Band (in Rusty's fourth topline appearance on Stage 2) at 8:30 PM, blues/rockabilly quartet The Steeltown Playboys (who played the drive-in Rotaryfest in 2021) at 7:30 PM, reunited local progressive rock band The Hyperion Effect (new to any Rotaryfest stage) at 6:30 PM, ...

...2022 Stage 1 performers All The Tired Horses (featuring Treble Charger's Bill Priddle) at 5:30 PM, and blues rock veterans Smokehouse (also returning from Stage 2 last year) at 4:30 PM. Should be a fine way to embrace the blues and support the Sault Blues Society, so consider checking that out if you like the sounds of this lineup!

As for the main lineup on Saturday, July 16th, eight acts will take the stage (down one from last year), and like on Stage 1, half of these bands are festival newcomers! Fresh off of their high profile album release, local alt-hard rock quintet Handsome Sandwich will headline Stage 2 at 8:30 PM in their second year on the bill, and it'll be good to see their momentum continue with a strong placement at Rotaryfest! Local progressive rock mainstays Machines Dream will co-headline at 7:30 PM, just over a month after the two bands perform at the Sault Community Theatre Centre for Soo Soundcheck. Counting their 2010 set as The Craig West Band, 2023 will mark Machines Dream's record sixth appearance on the Second Stage (seventh at Rotaryfest period counting 2021), so that'll be worth noting for fans! As well, it has since been revealed by Machines Dream that their original lineup is reuniting for gigs this summer, Rotaryfest included.

While not a metal band, Machines Dream are ultra talented, so don't miss them in July either! Young local indie rock band The Hollow Heads will return from last year for a set at 6:30 PM, while fellow Clusterfolk alums Distich will bring their folk/indie originals to Rotaryfest for the first time at 5:30 PM. Veteran local folk singer/songwriter M.D. Dunn will play his fourth Stage 2 set and first since 2018 at 4:30 PM, and the opening three acts are all Second Stage newcomers. Rising local folk musician Matthew James (who just moved here last year) gets the 3:30 PM slot, while veteran singer/guitarist Brian Tremblay will surprisingly make his first ever solo appearance at Rotaryfest at 2:30 PM. The opening band at 1:30 PM will actually be new local hard rock quartet Far From Fine (née Ravencore) in their first announced show of 2023, though you'll have seen 3/4ths of the band play Rotaryfest on both stages in the past.

As always, Stage 2 is FREE and ALL AGES, and this year's lineup has a nice balance of new faces and familiar standbys to take in, plus some heavier counterweights to bookend the proceedings! Weather permitting, this should be all be a fun time for local music fans, so visit the above links for more on Stage 2, Stage 1, and the rest of this year's Rotaryfest festivities!

We'll close today with some assorted recent updates, and as usul, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • In a clarification of their announced summer concert schedule, local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard (who are not playing Stage 1 this year) have confirmed that they will be subbing in for Soundcheck as hosts of the Thursday jam night at Jay's Piston Broke Pub in all three of the weekends that they're booked for this summer, now including June 29th and August 17th. Reasons for the switch were not announced, but if Soundcheck's okay with the breaks, hopefully fans and jammers will be too! In a comment reply in a personal Facebook share of the updated schedule, frontman Greg Simpson confirmed that they are not playing at Jay's next Saturday due to a private booking elsewhere.
  • The aforementioned Far From Fine confirmed on their Facebook page yesterday that they are currently recording at Mission Control Studios, sharing a picture of drummer Austin "Mickey" McCrae laying a track down. This is presumably for the debut album that they have been teasing since the then-Ravencore mentioned said plans in this SooToday article after last year's Toystock. Definitely good to see and hear, so stay tuned for more from Far From Fine when it's announced!
  • SooToday contributor Chris Belsito posted this article on May 18th in the wake of the latest Mikey & His Uke cover video (covering Nine Inch Nails' "Wish" with Tony Hawk on vocals), which confirms new details about the video. Tony's scenes were filmed in his San Diego hometown, and yes, that was Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor in a cameo! The man welding behind Mikey Hawdon in his scenes is actually Mikey's dad Ken, who is a steelworker, and Mikey has gotten to know Tony well through online chats around their four collaborations so far. Fun read, so check it out above!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for this month's YouTube Channel Profile on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Rotaryfest Stage 1!!)

Single topic post today, as the full lineup for Rotaryfest's music stages was announced via their official website and this SooToday press release earlier today, so what should you know there? This year's festival is considered to be "the 100th year" of Rotaryfest, which evolved from the first Community Day parade in 1922, and while I think you have to omit a year (likely the parade-less 2020) to get to the milestone number, this is still a neat accomplishment! Everything is the status quo from last year music-wise, with the covers-leaning Stage 1 at its usual spot at Clergue Park beside the Centennial Library, while the originals-focused Stage 2 returns for its 16th installment and second post-pandemic year beside the Art Gallery of Algoma. We'll discuss the Stage 2 lineup in an upcoming post, but click here for the details if you want to jump the gun. Sponsored by the Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corporation once again, who can you expect to see on Stage 1 in July?

As usual, there are three days of live music starting on Thursday, July 14th, and the very first act this year will be that night's only hard rock performer, namely local/Barrie alt-hard rock musician Mike Haggith! Making his second local appearance of 2023 (following tonight's Face To Face event at The Art Hub on Spring), this will presumably be a repeat of his Stage 1 set last year, featuring Mike and a band of locals doing his original material (including cuts from "All The Best In All You Do"), so be there nice and early to see Mike in full form to kick off this year's music at 6:00 PM! The Thursday headliners at 9:30 PM will be local Abba tribute band Abba Soo in their Rotaryfest debut, while local roots rock band The Hustle Brothers will also hit Stage 1 for the first time at 8:00 PM. Festival regulars The Northern Jazz Ensemble have the 7:00 PM slot in their fifth straight Stage 1 appearance and 14th since the current format was introduced.

As always, the music on Thursday the 14th is FREE & ALL AGES, as will be the case on Friday, July 15th, which has six bands this year, equal to 2022. Two of them are hard rock/punk acts, including online page-less alt-punk cover quintet Bookclub in their festival debut at 9:00 PM and classic/hard rock cover quartet Double Down at 8:00 PM. Good to see some newer acts on tap this year, and with lots of familiar faces, so don't miss their sets on the Friday! Befitting a 100th anniversary, organizers are going big with a touring tribute band on Friday and Saturday, the first time that they've ever booked a Friday headliner of this scale since the modern format's launch. The band in question is Renegade: The Ultimate Tribute To Styx, a Winnipeg-based tribute to the classic rock/AOR staples of the 1970s and 1980s. Styx could dip into heavier waters at times, and from what I've heard, Styx fans will be impressed!

Renegade are scheduled at the oddly specific time of 10:20 PM. Thursday's opening three bands are classic rock cover quartet RPM (in their third Stage 1 set) at 7:00 PM, newer local country trio The Way Backs (fronted by local musician Jeffrey Wright) at 6:00 PM, and local classic rock trio The Sidekicks (featuring ex-Griphook bassist Dan Beaupre) at 5:00 PM, one year after dropping out of their planned Stage 1 debut. Good to see them get a second chance! Not a bad lineup for classic rock fans in particular, so see above for more details on all six Friday acts!

As for the Saturday, July 15th lineup, that day is the biggest and longest as ever, and in one of this year's biggest surprises, defunct local classic/hard rock cover quintet That's Chester will close Rotaryfest in a one-off set at 10:30 PM! This will be their eleventh Stage 1 appearance (a number that only four other bands have hit since 2001), and their first since reuniting for the Rotaryfest Rewind theme year in 2018. Assuming Gabe Tessaro's retirement from live music will be paused for one night, it'll be good to see him, Greg, Aubrey, and Ric (and Dan?) back, so don't miss them on the Saturday night! As has been routine since 2015, the featured touring band is the second-to-last band (counting 2023, a Greg Simpson-fronted band has had the closing honours in five of the last six installments), and this year, the honours go to Bed of Roses: The World's Best Bon Jovi Tribute out of Winnipeg!

Rotaryfest is not new to having a Bon Jovi tribute here (the hybrid Bon Jovi/Journey tribute Bon Journey headlined in 2012), but Bed of Roses are solely tackling Bon Jovi... at least on Saturday. Members of this band also perform in Renegade, the Styx tribute on Friday, so why not make use of both guises on a big stage like this on the same weekend! Hair metal fans will surely get a kick out of Bed of Roses on July 16th, especially compared to how Jon Bon Jovi himself sounded on tour last year! Their set is at 8:30 PM, with classic rock veterans Mustang Heart playing their eighteenth Stage 1 set beforehand at 7:15 PM, a record in the post-2000 format of the festival. New local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will make their festival debut at 6:15 PM (surprisingly, Jus' Chillin never played Stage 1 previously), while local funk/hard rock cover sextet The Wyld Stallyns will play the main stage for a third straight year at 5:15 PM, surely one of many summer gigs from them.

Solid block of classic and hard rock to close the Saturday program via the above bands, so keep them in mind for your schedule planning! In the first half of the day, the 4:15 performer is local country musician Brendan Hodgson (also playing Stage 1 for the third consecutive year), while veteran classic rock band Dorian Grey will play at 3:15 in their own Rotaryfest debut. A mystery band named Land & Forest are scheduled at 2:15 PM, and with the schedule going live without Facebook event pages for each individual band (at least not yet), I truly know nothing about them at press time. We'll let you know when more comes out! Generations frontwoman Valerie Powley's classic rock/R&B side hustle Ladies Sing The Blues will return for a second year at 1:15 PM, and party rock cover quintet Encore will play Stage 1 for the third time as the 12:00 PM openers. Once again, the Saturday lineup is FREE & ALL AGES!

This is a strong lineup of covers-leaning bands, especially for classic rock fans, and while complaints about the lineup are common annually, note that half of the 18 local bands this year are Stage 1 newcomers, and only three of them have played more than thrice previously. Three bands who played the last three years are absent too (Bone Yard, Mid Life Crysis, and the now-defunct Obsession), though of course, Greg from Bone Yard is instead focusing on the That's Chester reunion set this year. Be sure to visit the above links for much more on Stage 1 at the Soo's summer festival in 2023, and stay tuned for the Stage 2 lineup reveal soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Nostalgia) & Weekend Concert Previews!!

On this final concert weekend of May 2023, let's dive into this weekend's concert previews, including a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you should know!

New (and currently online page-less) local classic/hard rock cover trio Nostalgia will make their public concert debut TOMORROW NIGHT at Reggie's Place! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via its Facebook page earlier today. Nostalgia are essentially the belated successors to defunct local hard rock cover band Caveman Morrison's 2012-2013 lineup, with singer/guitarist Tym Morrison (ex-Hollow/Carbon Black) and ex-bassist Randy "Dutch" Vanderploeg (ex-Browbeat) joining forces once again, now joined by Dutch's old Nikkfitt bandmate Chet Dziergas on drums. We don't yet have 100% knowledge on what Nostalgia will be playing, but if you recall Caveman Morrison's late 2000s-early 2010s relaunch, that should give you an idea, and if you've missed Tym playing in a full band setting, this will be especially notable! I don't think he's played a publically advertised set with a full band since 2016.

No word on why they're not playing on Saturday (let alone if someone else is), but come down to Reggie's TOMORROW NIGHT to see what kind of nostalgia that Nostalgia are bringing to the table! This show is at 9:00 PM with no cover charge and a 19+ age limit. See above for more details, and we'll let you know when/if videos and/or an official band page turn up!

Next up, let's preview some concerts that did get advance notice, starting with a unique event TOMORROW NIGHT at The Art Hub on Spring, as local/Barrie alt-hard rock solo musician Mike Haggith and Sinister Hearts frontman, folk singer/songwriter, and Borderline radio host Brian Tremblay will join forces for a special concert named Face To Face! This event is basically themed like the old VH1 Storytellers series, where talking about the inspiration behind each song is as important as the songs themselves, but here, the rapport and camaraderie between Mike & Brian is also being hyped up. I get the sense that there isn't a firm blueprint of what to expect set-wise, just some fun rapport and entertaining music, and it seems like a low-stress way for Mike to return home! That said, Mike (and Brian?) will be releasing a live album from this show that will get a vinyl pressing, so keep that in mind!

Complimentary food and beverages will be available for attendees of this all ages, 7:00 PM concert, and you can buy tickets at this link for $22.63 (presumably $20 at the door too). This sounds like a fun evening for fans of Mike and/or Brian's music, and you'll get to know more about them as people and composers along the way in a new-ish, intimate locale, so definitely visit the official Facebook event page for more on Face To Face, and here's Mike live!

Also in Sault Ontario this weekend is the return of new local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations to The Esquire Club for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Fresh off of gigs at Reggie's last week, these should be a fine opportunity for fans of Valerie and/or Jus' Chillin to get their classic cover fix from this new union, and hopefully there's a solid audience both nights! Note that a comment on their Facebook group indicates that Generations will be playing at Rotaryfest Stage 1 in July, but we typically wait for the official schedule reveal from organizers before addressing them here. Stay tuned though! As usual for weekend cover gigs at The Esquire Club, expect 9:30 PM start times, no cover charges, and 19+ age limits as usual. Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's a new video shared to the band's Facebook group from their Reggie's gig this past Saturday!

Filmed by attendee Josie Weir, the video sees Generations covering the Janis Joplin version of "Me & Bobby McGee", which Obsession fans will recall Valerie doing with that band. Sounds good to me with strong instrumentation, though the vertical camera angle does it no favours. This is exacerbated by drummer Tony Santoro being blocked from view, and the band seems to be playing in an oddly narrow space given where Josie was filming, but everything sounds solid, so check it out for yourself below!

Finally, let's hop across the border to Sault Michigan, where local hard rock/classic metal quartet Tarnished will take the stage for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rapids Lounge at the local Kewadin Casino! Their Grand Rapids tour run last month aside, these will surprisingly be Tarnished's first announced shows in the Eastern Upper Peninsula since opening for Scotty Austin at The Savoy Bar in March, and their first at The Rapids Lounge since earlier that same month. While not yet announced on their Facebook page at press time, Kewadin's entertainment page had us covered (assuming nothing bad happened in the interim), and hopefully the guys deliver the goods with their solid originals and hard rocking covers this weekend! As usual for Tarnished's weekend runs at Kewadin Casino, these gigs have 21+ age limits, no cover charges, and 9:00 PM start times. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Tarnished live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Peril, Rhythm & Brews, And Double Down), And New Videos!!

Here's a new news post on this Wednesday morning, and it is mostly devoted to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS on both sides of the border, plus some new videos from one recent concert and to promote one ahead. Now, let's see what you should know, starting with the new concerts!

New local classic/hard rock cover quartet Double Down will play their first concerts outside of Reggie's Place when they debut at Jay's Piston Broke Pub on Friday, June 9th & Saturday, June 10th! Following well received Reggie's weekends in April and earlier this month, fans in the west end can enjoy Joel, Adam, Brad, and Ric's brand of classic and hard rock covers at the former Reggie's West in a few weeks, and hopefully there's a sizeable turnout both nights! Expect 9:30 PM start times, no cover charges, and 19+ age limits. While we're on the subject, two new videos of Double Down has surfaced on their Facebook page, so what should you know there? Filmed by attendee Audrey Marshall, these are tucked into a post otherwise full of pictures from their May 12th gig at Reggie's that she posted to their page, and as such, they appear to be unembeddable on external sites.

One video has the guys covering Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" with frontman Joel Syrette on vocals, and the other sees them covering J.J. Cale's "Going Down" with bassist Brad Stephen on vocals, much as fans will have seen him and Ric do with Bone Yard. Both covers are well handled from a good (if not centered) angle of the stage, and kudos to Audrey for filming these horizontally, so check them out for yourselves above, and look for more like this when Double Down debut at Jay's next month!

Next up, Kewadin Casino has announced their June concert slate (+ Saturday, July 1st) at their regional branches' on-site lounges, courtesy of their respective entertainment pages, and there are a handful of new hard rock gigs hitting them both! Just to clarify this ahead, the band playing at The Rapids Lounge in Sault Michigan next month named Highway 41 is a country band out of Houghton, and they are not related to defunct local classic/hard rock band Highway 63 beyond the similar name. The sooner of the shows come on Friday, June 16th & Saturday, June 17th, when Traverse City classic metal trio Peril return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin branch, in their first local dates since rocking the Sault Kewadin earlier this month, and their first in St. Ignace since New Year's weekend. Always good to see Jeff and crew back north of the Mackinac Bridge, and hopefully next month's shows rock hard again!

As usual for Peril's trips to the E.U.P., expect these concerts to have 21+ age limits, 9:00 PM start times, and no cover charge. Peril have always been good to local audiences, so don't miss all of the action next month, and we'll let you know if either of Jeff's primary bands turn up again soon!

The other new hard rock shows coming to Kewadin Casino in this batch of concerts will be on Friday, June 30th and Saturday, July 1st, as local hard rock quartet Rhythm & Brews will return to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin to wrap up one month and ring in another! While these will be Rhythm & Brews' first publically announced gigs since rocking the St. Ignace Kewadin in early March, we regrettably did miss a gig of theirs on Saturday, April 29th, as they played at The Merchant's Bar (a.k.a. The Merch) that night. Alas, the band never plugged this show on their Facebook page, and The Merch's Facebook page rarely promotes bands scheduled to play there, so I only heard about it three+ weeks late via band members' personal Facebook pages (even if, the announcement was only made that day). Regardless, I profusely apologize, but hopefully the concert was a hit for the band, fans, and Merch regulars!

I fear that I may have missed other non-Kewadin gigs from them, but alas, Rhythm & Brews' Facebook page isn't updated all that often. At least we know about their Soo Kewadin gigs next month, which should deliver the hard rock goods! You can check out this Nixxon Dixxon, Highway 63, and Clownsack union on Canada Day weekend at 9:00 PM with 21+ age limits and no cover charges. See above for more details!

We'll close today by kinda sorta staying in Sault Michigan... kinda. On Monday, Sault Ontario southern hard rock band Fort Creek shared a post to plug the Josey Scott's Saliva concert that they are opening at The Machine Shop on Saturday, June 24th, which featured two items. One is the new official poster seen here and elsewhere prior, but the other item is a video shot by a band member (I presume) of a radio playing The Sault's Rock Station, Rock 101. At this juncture, long-time DJ Allison "Alli J" Miller was on the air, and she is heard here plugging the concert, with the video capturing mentions of the local openers, hence why Fort Creek would film it (alas, WSUE isn't known for playing original local rock bands in general rotation, so take any plug that you can get!) That said, Alli did forget the GT in Spades GT, and she erroneously noted that tickets were on sale at The Machine Shop (they are only available online).

I've never been good for keeping track of contests and giveaways for concert tickets on 101.3 FM, but Alli did note that there will be giveaways for tickets on-air tomorrow, so if you want a free ticket to this big show next month, keep that in mind! If you don't win a freebie (or don't listen to Rock 101), tickets are running for $43.50 at this link, and the price will go up $10 if you buy the week of the show/at the gate. Given that Rock 101 and promoters Superior Entertainment are based out of Sault Michigan, you can see how this write-up straddles the border in a few ways, so give Fort Creek's video of the radio plug a watch/listen below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Vanity First) & Heavy Lies The Crown Updates!!

I hope all of our Canadian readers are having a good Victoria Day! Ironically, most of this post reflects the E.U.P. (whose Memorial Day holiday isn't for another week), but we are leading off with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT on this side of the border, so here's what you should know!

Local punk trio Vanity First and rap/party metal duo The Apocalypse Afterparty will join forces for a concert at Soo Blaster on Saturday, June 17th! While neither are strangers to playing at Soo Blaster as support bands (the former for Gutter Creek and Leash, the latter at multiple rap concerts), the idea of an all-local show with just the two of them is unique in and of itself, especially on such a big stage, so it will be interesting to see how this concert goes! Vanity are fresh off of their solo gigs at Shooters this weekend, while The A.A. were last seen opening for Madchild at Soo Blaster last month. Both bands' energetic covers and diverse originals should pull a strong audience, so don't miss out on the 17th! Sponsored by Sessions Cannabis, this concert has a 19+ age limit, door opening at 7:00 PM, and admission prices at $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Advance tickets will be on sale on Eventbrite, though the link is not out yet. See the above links for continuing details on this concert!

Next up, let's continue getting caught up on the latest updates from St. Ignace, Michigan metalcore band Heavy Lies The Crown's Facebook page from the past 3+ weeks, starting with their April 30th reveal that their recent music video is for a song named "Jell-O", and while complete & uploaded to their YouTube channel, it was still private at that time. Singer Brandon West posted this video later that day to reveal that the video proper would go public two days later, and also thank fans for their support and tease their new run of official band hoodies. On May 1st, Brandon teased in this video that H.L.T.C. were working on a fast new song, tentatively named "Sound Check" (no relation) that would also get its own music video, so stay tuned in that regard! After one more teaser clip from Brandon about the "Jell-O" premiere that night, the video went live, so what should you know about it?

Directed by Robin Chargo, it features the band playing in white hazmat suits in a sealed room drenched in blood (perhaps Jell-O that didn't set in the fridge?!). The blood got all over the band too, especially Brandon, who is the only band member not wearing a face mask (a logistical necessity given that he is screaming the lyrics). I'll hold comment on the song proper, pending our eventual review of the album in progress, but the video is well suited to the track, and it was well shot, so give it a watch below!

Conspicuous by his absence from the video is rhythm guitarist Christian Thanasiu, and that's because he quietly left Heavy Lies The Crown earlier this year, as revealed in a post on May 2nd before "Jell-O" went live. A reason for Christian's departure was not announced, but the band left the door open on playing with him again in the future, and it definitely sounds like he left on amicable terms. The music video was shot in March, and based on the band's usage of photos with their most recent full lineup, he must have left between late February and early March (videos from their recent concerts haven't been plentiful to be any more specific). Christian replaced Nathan Switzer on rhythm guitar early last year during the band's lineup overhaul, and his beard, toque, & Flying V guitar were always a welcome sight on stage. Hopefully things are going well for him no matter what, and that we see Christian back out there soon!

Remember that H.L.T.C.'s bassist is also named Christian (Bailey/Cook), so that confusion will now be alleviated, for what that's worth. No word on when/if they'll find a new second guitarist, but we will keep you posted if anything comes out in that regard! Continuing with their May Facebook updates, Brandon posted this video on May 5th of him attempting to sing in a glam metal style, and while a little strained, I have heard far worse! On May 7th, Brandon uploaded this video from his garage to tease their upcoming "Sound Check" music video, which will apparently feature some type of toy guns (pixellated to likely avoid any content issues about guns, but the colouring implies that they are toys). On May 11th, Brandon was back with another video, this time to hype up their next concert, which went down on Saturday at the 2 Wheel Tavern in Wolverine, outside of Cheboygan. For H.L.T.C.'s standards, that's as close to "local" as I've seen from them, so hopefully some Yoopers came out!

The show (held on an outdoor stage) saw Heavy Lies The Crown open for three bands, including headlining Indiana thrash metal band Wraith, but H.L.T.C. were not filmed for the venue's Facebook page like other bands were. Brandon did note that all but one song in their set on Saturday was new, so keep that in mind. They'll also return to Alpena (not as far on the grand scheme of things for them) on July 22nd when they open for Katharsys Theory at the Michigan Brown Trout Festival, so see those links for more details if you're up for a road trip in two months! We are now officially caught up on Heavy Lies The Crown, so see above and their music video teaser clip below for more from them!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Bookclub), The Queen Tribute Concert Preview, And New Videos!!

Packed news post on this Saturday night over the Victoria Day long weekend, including new videos and related updates, the last preview for this weekend's hard rock/punk slate, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month! Here's what you should know!

Online page-less local alternative/punk cover quintet Bookclub will return to the stage on Friday, June 16th for an outdoor set at the corner of Queen Street East and Gore Street as part of the third annual Summer Moon Festival! If you're unaware of this event, the S.M.F. is an annual arts festival that grew from outdoor murals amid pandemic restrictions in 2021 to a full scale festival with arts and music events at multiple downtown locations over the Father's Day weekend next month, so definitely visit the official website for complete details on the Summer Moon Festival itinerary this year! Live music debuted at this festival last year, and while the vast majority of the artists don't fit our active coverage, Bookclub will provide a rock respite during the Street Yourselves Street Party on the 16th alongside a meet & greet session with muralists who painted in the area, a mini-comic/collector's convention, and vendors from restaurants in the area of the street party proper.

Bookclub will be joined by local roots rock veterans The Hustle Brothers for the street party, and in a mild surprise, The Wyld Stallyns will not play at the Summer Moon Festival at all, which (I believe) is a first for a Bookclub gig. As far as the Street Yourselves Street Party goes, this is an all ages event at 8:00 PM with no cover charge, and bars in the vicinity of the stage will be open. Weather permitting, this should be fun for outdoor concertgoers, so visit the above links for more detail!

Next up, we'll wrap up this weekend's hard rock concert previews by heading east to the Sault Community Theatre Centre, where Australian tribute band Queen: It's A Kinda Magic will return for another high profile local concert TOMORROW NIGHT! As Queen fans may recall, this tribute played here in May of last year to a strong turnout, despite being postponed twice across an almost two year span due to the pandemic. Assuming that there isn't another deadly pandemic breaking out this weekend, this Sunday's concert should hold, and if you saw Queen: It's A Kinda Magic last year, you'll know that their faithful looking and sounding stage show will deliver the goods compared to what you know of Freddie, Brian, John, and Roger's heyday, particularly their 1986 world tour! While selling well like last year, tickets are still available from the fourth row and back (side sections) and the eleventh row and back (centre section).

Tickets for this all ages & 7:00 PM concert are available at this link or at the S.C.T.C. box office at Station Mall for $72 (adults), $43 (kids 12 and under), and $67 apiece in a group of 6+ adults, price points all being $10 higher than last year. Hopefully things go just as well for this bohemian rhapsody of rock classics from Queen: It's A Kinda Magic tomorrow night, so visit the above links for more on their returne, and here they are live!

Staying in the realm of new videos, I was unable to attend the Dayglo Abortions/Random Killing concert at Soo Blaster last night due to a trip, but we can get a glimpse of the headlining Victoria, B.C. hardcore punk band's set via the video below! Uploaded to promoters Live705's Facebook page earlier today, this 6 minute clip captures three songs from The Dayglos' set, though there's not much in the way of breaks between them, so note that when checking this out. It features most of "Two Dogs Fucking", "My Girl", and "Dog Farts", and don't shoot the messenger, I didn't title these songs! While unfortunately shot vertically, and including an odd aside where the filmer left the bar proper during "Dog Farts" (did he take the suggestion if he wanted to work or not?!), the video comes through nicely and was shot with good stable views of the stage and even some of the fans! I like the video projection behind the drumkit too.

Murray's vocals can be hard to hear, complicating my work identifying the songs, but fans of The Dayglo Abortions will take to this video below, and we'll let you know if any more footage from last night turns up!

We'll close with some updates from local/Barrie crossover thrash quintet Spades GT, starting with the reveal that they are shooting their first ever music video! The former Jack Spades didn't make one for their local output, but despite their bigger platform in the GTA, they did call home to get this video done, specifically bringing in ex-Shit Liver frontman Josh Penno's Spacebag Productions for the shoot! He's also filming a video for guitarist Daniel Horton's other current band The Fast Life while in town. Lots of teaser images from the set have been shared on the band's Facebook page, indicating that they're playing in a (well lit) barn, with a plotline involving an axe wielding maniac (played by bassist James Roy Daley) stalking a female victim. Based on the video plot, it seems likely that the song in question will be "Final Girl". It'll be interesting to see how the final product looks, presumably before June 2nd!

Before wrapping things up, the band released one more advance single from their forthcoming album "Sewer City Radio" to their YouTube Music channel on Thursday! The song in question is "XS" (as in "excess"), which is the track featuring Fast Life frontman Andrew Moorehouse on a guest verse. I'll hold comment on the song pending our eventual album review, but the band said that it is a "lil (sic) something different for us", so judge for yourself below, and stay tuned for more from Spades GT!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this week! Thanks everyone!
