Updates From Spades GT & Heavy Lies The Crown!!

On this Wednesday morning, we're covering recent news and notes from two local bands (one each from Ontario & Michigan) more acquainted with concerts further south, but with higher profiles partially to thank, so here's what you should know from both!

Here's some recent news and notes from local/Barrie crossover thrash band Spades GT, so what's new from their camp in the last few weeks? Well, their new album "Sewer City Radio" is continuing to make the rounds to music review outlets, with Jason Burgers Brown of the British YouTube channel Friday 13th Metal giving it an 8/10 review on September 24th! Jason called it "an interesting mix" of styles and broke down each song for how they sounded and where he felt the influences of the songs came from. Seeing someone's thoughts from across the pond is definitely interesting, and I wouldn't have made the Volbeat ties that Jason did to these songs! Be advised that a lot of name pronunciations are off, but we say things differently to how the Brits do as well. Also, he didn't make any reference to the Jack Spades era, treating them as debuting in 2022 (they technically relaunched in Barrie in 2021). Give it a look below!

On September 28th, the lyrics to their Jack Spades-era original "Negative Headspace" (from the "Fed Up" split) were posted to their Facebook page, so if you've ever wanted to sing along without bothering the guys to send the lyrics, keep that in mind! They hinted that more song lyrics may be posted in the future, and "Cenobites" (from "Sewer City Radio") had its lyrics posted last week, both songs labelled as "WTF is Johnny mumbling about?". Of their studio output, that's two original songs down, sixteen to go! Neither "The First" nor "Fed Up" had lyrics with the physical copies. On Sunday, Spades GT were featured on a provincial FM rock radio station, namely CKGE, 94.9 The Rock in Oshawa, specifically on Sum 41 bassist Jason "Cone" McCaslin's Sunday night program Cone's Cave. On there, Cone has a segment on recently discovered songs/bands that he likes, and the title track from "Sewer City Radio" was reportedly played on air.

I don't believe you can hear back episodes of Cone's Cave on demand, but it's neat to hear Sum 41's bassist hype up and play Spades GT to the GTA, and hopefully this got them some deserved exposure! Drummer Tyler Reiner was interviewed on air, and you can see Cone hype up the episode as a whole via this "Reel". That about covers Spades GT's unreported new activity, but visit the above links for more on their upcoming Southern Ontario dates, including their run with Anvil!

Next up, let's look at recent updates & activity from St. Ignace, Michigan deathcore quartet Heavy Lies The Crown, so what have they been up to over the past month+? In a comment reply on this shared meme on their Facebook page on September 6th, they shared the first public video from their set in Gould City opening for Tantric the previous Sunday, but it runs for just two seconds and only features guitarist Ted Olson pumping up the crowd. Better than nothing, but not by a lot! The following week, singer Brandon West starred in this video to hype up H.L.T.C.'s final concert of the year, which saw them join Nuke & The Nightshift and other bands for "Hell Night" in Bay City on October 7th. Very much a downstate show, but hopefully it went well! Brandon uniquely hosted this video in front of a green-screened version of the concert's poster, a motif that continued for their next video that hyped up new t-shirts being made and going on sale.

The shirts have this logo inspired by their song "Cigar With The Devil", and pre-orders will apparently be signed by all four band members (no word on if they're literally signing the shirts or something adjacent). Re: the Hell Night show in Bay City, Ted starred in this pre-show video where he noted that they were at Bemo's Bar for it, and that they hoped to see fans out, and photos from the gig were posted to Facebook on Monday. Looks like a good time was had by all! While that was their last announced concert of 2023, Heavy Lies The Crown were trying to get added to the bill of Chelsea Grin & Suicide Silence's concert in Grand Rapids on October 28th via this Opnr campaign, so if you'd support them being named to the bill, give that a look to help them out! As of Saturday, they were recording vocals towards their long-teased new album, but let's wrap things up with videos from the Tantric concert outside of Bates Corner Bar & Grill!

If that 2 second comment reply video seemed like a tease, then never fear, as they've made up for that in the past few weeks! This "Reel" was posted to Facebook on September 25th featuring 7 seconds or so of action (and Brandon encouraging fans to bang their heads) at this outdoor U.P. event, but a much longer "Reel" was posted yesterday featuring a breakdown and Brandon headbanging to good effect. I can't embed "Reels" here, but I can embed this normal video featuring 9 seconds of the guys headbanging during an instrumental breakdown. I have no clue if they have longer (and/or horizontal) videos from the Gould City gig, but give what they have shared from the Tantric show a look above & below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!
