LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Peril) & More Weekend Concert Previews!!

As promised, here's the rest of this weekend's hard rock concert previews (barring any more short notice confirmations), and we're mostly sticking to Sault Michigan and the E.U.P. today, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS and a related apology for a missed date. Here's what you should know on this Friday evening!

Traverse City classic metal trio Peril will return to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, we just learned about these shows this past weekend via concert calendar posts on their Facebook page, but they have been listed prior on Kewadin's website's entertainment page. While we're on the subject, I profusely apologize for missing one more show from them, as they performed during the annual Music By The Bay summer concert series at American Legion Park in St. Ignace yesterday. How that bypassed me is anyone's guess, especially as the show was listed last month when we covered Tarnished's outdoor gig there, but the idea of Peril playing E.U.P. dates outside of the Kewadin Casino umbrella is still quite uncommon, despite also playing there on July 17th. Hopefully yesterday's show was a blast for Jeff, Howard, and Brooks, and an indoor encore is incoming for fans in the Soo TONIGHT & TOMORROW!

Next up, let's head north to Sault Ontario briefly, where local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will return to Reggie's Place TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Last seen at The Water Tower Pub two weeks ago, these will be Generations' first concerts at Reggie's in three weeks, so if you've missed this veteran foursome at the venerable Queen Street East nightclub, this is your last chance for the summer! In the recent posting on their Facebook group, drummer Tony Santoro revealed that they will have Muckrakers frontman Mike McDonald sitting in with them this weekend, as he did multiple times during their guitarist vacancy in 2023. The implication is that Mike is filling in for an absent Tony Kajnar on guitar, but if we hear that Tony K. will still be there, we'll let you know. Generations take the stage tonight & tomorrow at 9:30 PM with 19+ age limits and no cover charges. See above for more details, and for a preview, here they are live!

Back to Michigan now, and remember how Peril played at the Music By The Bay concert series in St. Ignace yesterday? Well, we won't miss the next SMS-amenable show there, as local classic/hard rock (and now covers-only) quartet Tarnished will set up shop at American Legion Park's outdoor stage TOMORROW! While not freshly plugged on the band's Facebook page, this will be Tarnished's second and final stop in this annual series for 2025, and well timed for a Saturday, so if you're up for an evening of hard rocking covers from Alex, Josh, Chris, and Ron, you know where to go tomorrow! Music By The Bay concerts run from 7:00-8:30 PM at 200 North State Street, and they are obviously all ages with no cover charge. Be advised that 9&10 News is calling for a 70% chance of rain for much of showtime in St. Ignace tomorrow, so while the stage is covered, I don't know if the weather would complicate things.

Keep tabs with the band & park if you're at all concerned about the forecast. Temperatures will be hovering around 75° (23° Celsius) during showtime as per the current forecast, so keep everything in mind for this show as well as The Nameless in Goetzville and Silent 9 in Laird, Ontario tomorrow given that we have a lot of scheduled hard rock shows outdoors during the upcoming rain event. Finally for this weekend's known previews, we'll stay in St. Ignace, where local deathcore quintet Heavy Lies The Crown will make their annual August appearance in their hometown with a headlining concert TOMORROW NIGHT! After hosting the 2nd Street Music Festival the last two years on that very street, H.L.T.C. have moved the show both a week later than planned but also to a formal indoor venue, namely the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5114 at 1110 North State Street. Regardless, the concert still ties in with frontman Brandon West's birthday earlier this week. Heavy Lies The Crown teased on the Facebook event page that they'll have "a wild surprise" regarding their return to Alpena next week that will be revealed tomorrow, and while I'm unsure of the context, note that temporary guitarist Paul Nolan is still featured in their most recent band photos, so his involvement "for the time being" may continue through tomorrow.

Heavy will be joined tomorrow in St. Ignace by Hannahville "rez metal" band Ghidora (returning from last year's 2nd Street Fest as replacements for Macomb Country metalcore quartet At Water), as well as Detroit-area metalcore band Nothing After This and alt/nu-metal quintet Influence, both in their E.U.P. concert debuts. Brandon's Birthday Bash is a FREE event at 6:00 PM with no age limit, and with the move to VFW Post 5114, it is no longer an outdoor event (just as well given the forecast). This should be a blast for extreme metal fans in the E.U.P. and tip of the mitt, so don't miss out on the action tomorrow night, as Brandon's birthday only comes once a year! Heavy Lies The Crown Updates From The Last Few Months!!

How did I go all of July without a post catching us up on St. Ignace deathcore band Heavy Lies The Crown? Given that they're returning to the local stage this month for the returning 2nd Street Music Festival, it's high time we check out what the guys have been up to since late May! When we last left off with H.L.T.C., they were hitting the road for another concert downstate, this time 5 hours away in Chesterfield Township (outside of Detroit) on May 30th, where they opened for Buffalo post-hardcore band The Bunny The Bear at The Diesel Concert Lounge. Drummer Blaze Beairl was unable to make the trip that weekend, so they did a bit of lineup juggling. Guitarist Kaycee Mason sat in behind the drumkit (he already drums for Alpena metal band Katharsys Theory anyway), and they called in Kaycee's old bandmate Paul Nolan to sit in on guitar "for the time being", including at a private birthday concert the following day.

In their first Facebook video upload of the summer, Heavy Lies The Crown posted a very high quality performance video from the Chesterfield Township show, and while it only runs for 40 seconds, I do sincerely hope that this filmer got more content! The video in question shows Heavy and Paul in action, and this was reportedly the first time that bassist Christian Cook deployed backing vocals on stage with them, catching frontman Brandon West slightly off guard (in a good way). Christian has a very capable death growl there, so I'd be game to hear him more vocally! You can see more from that night in this highlight video featuring brief clips of all bands on May 30th, but it's another one of those videos that dubs over all live audio with an H.L.T.C. original ("Friend" here). With how good this video quality is, I'd be showing it off on full songs, but what do I know. Check everything out above & below!

Much of June was spent with Heavy Lies The Crown entering a contest to try and get voted in as a performer at the Global Citizen Festival in New York next month, which would also net them a $50,000 prize and a feature in Rolling Stone magazine. The Global Citizen Festival isn't exactly a metal haven in any year, but H.L.T.C. made a solid run at it, going as far as the quarterfinals, so congratulations to them on getting as far as they did! In their next Facebook video from early July, Brandon was seen driving his vehicle while talking to the camera in more of an off the cuff manner (not even saying "Hey guys, Heavy here" at the start). The focus here was on his vocal styles in their songs and what he prefers to do re: harsh vocals and "scare screaming", noting that their song "Jell-O" and his vocals there will very much be what their next album will largely sound like. Regarding their annual 2nd Street Music Festival in their hometown (one of the very few times that Heavy Lies The Crown ever play public concerts in the E.U.P.), Brandon confirmed on their Facebook page on June 2nd that the show has moved up a week from this Saturday to next Saturday (August 16th), while also moving it from its prior 2nd Street location to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5114 at 1110 North State Street, right along the shore of the Straits of Mackinac. Now simply called Brandon's Birthday Bash, the show will feature H.L.T.C. alongside two touring metal bands from Metro Detroit, namely metalcore quintet Nothing After This and alternative/nu-metal band Influence. as well as Hannahville "rez metal" band Ghidora, who made the trip east for the St. Ignace show last year. Ghidora are replacing Macomb Country metalcore quartet At Water, as per this video on July 25th.

Brandon only said that "things happen. Understandable" when citing the reason for At Water dropping out, but hopefully nothing too serious happened, as it'd be neat to see more Detroit-area bands play north of the Mackinac Bridge! Because H.L.T.C. have been fairly quiet this summer beyond teasers and hype (including a mention last month of more potential lineup changes), we are now caught up on their recent updates, but with the big St. Ignace show ahead next Saturday, there'll be more to discuss from their camp soon, so stay tuned for more from Heavy Lies The Crown this month, and for more news & notes this week! With news slow lately, and not wanting to force a post when weekend concert previews are so close that can use extra content if need be, we'll instead get this month's Defunct Local Band Profile up a little early! Our monthly feature post on a local metal, hard rock, or punk band that's no longer active & functioning again gives us a randomly selected group for this month, but like last month, I misjudged the amount of content and media for our next selection, so this month's planned second band (Hoist the Sails) will lead off a joint profile next month. Audio/Video: Though their Facebook page has since been deleted, six original songs and a cover of Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" survive as demo or live recordings on Skull After Betrayl's Reverbnation and MySpace pages. For videos, frontman Mike Vincent has shared a couple of jam session videos (sans guitarist Justin Polutanovich) on his YouTube channel, while our YouTube channel features a handful of videos from their live heyday, including this video of the guys playing their song "Zombitch" at their last concert in July 2011 at The Rosie!

Info/Analysis: Skull After Betrayl (not "Betrayal", the spelling was intentional) succeeded the defunct Despised Eyes to become a rising sight at local metal concerts upon their debut in early 2011. The band opened for The Dayglo Abortions & Titan's Eve at the former Roosevelt Hotel during their height, and took part in the first annual Swampstravaganza, before suddenly disbanding in July. After 3/4ths of the band briefly regrouped as The Dead Kings with additional members, Skull After Betrayl reunited that October, but accomplished little before disbanding for good in the spring of 2012, with members Mike Vincent & Adam Brett later forming Troubled Mind in 2015. Skull After Betrayl were a work in progress during their run, with the guys never finding a lasting subgenre, and Mike's singing and Adam's bass technique not as refined as they could be, but they showed promise on some big stages, and hopefully everyone stays active musically!

This series will return on or around July 10th with inactive Sault Michigan hardcore band Hoist the Sails as promised, but as I'm very certain this time that they don't have enough info or media for a solo profile, we've added a Sault Ontario band to fill things out, and through random selection, we have chosen The 12 Gauge Ready, the popular local ska punk outfit who, despite their successes, have extremely little surviving information online, hence why they'll fit a double profile. YouTube Channel Profile Series: GardenofBedlamBand, TheDimebagmikey, and taylortrecroce's Channels

A day later than I had hoped, but today, we have this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! For a second straight month, we're looking at three YouTube channels with a 50% or higher concentration of local metal/hard rock concert videos, as the first one we selected only had one video available. As usual in this series, we're looking at the videos, information, and reasons to check out said channel(s), and there's some nice quality stuff here, including some familiar local sights and more footage from a major local concert, so read on below for this latest installment, and if there's anything incorrect or missing, please let me know! Owner: A member of Garden of Bedlam (my guess is bassist Evan Belleau), but the channel is credited to the band as a whole

Channel Timeline: Launched on December 2nd, 2008; Only video posted later that month

Channel Summary: At the time, this channel was intended to be the official YouTube channel for prominent local metal band Garden of Bedlam, who had publically launched in early 2008. Only one video was posted onto this channel before it fell inactive by the end of the year, and it has since been succeeded by two newer official channels, this one most recently. The only video posted on the GardenofBedlamBand channel was of Garden of Bedlam playing their song "Shallow" at the then-Lock City Grand Theater on December 17th, 2008 as part of the Sick Jams For Sick Kids fundraising concert, where they & four other bands performed to raise money for the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. The camera isn't well centered when stationary, and the heavy music sounds distorted at points, but this is a nice early look at Garden of Bedlam in their first year of activity, and it's notable on that basis! Just remember that their newer channels are better sources for up to date video footage.

Channel Summary: Though still in active use, Mike has only posted two metal videos onto his YouTube channel, both coming on June 2nd, 2011, during his most recent active live band Skull After Betrayal's heyday. The videos are of all 4 members of the band playing their originals "Enemy" & "Dagger to the Heart" (which is embedded below) at a jam session around that time period, and they showed their skills well here! Though the members are each partially obscured by their placement in the video, they have some well played metal in store for the most part, and the lack of vocals in these videos don't hurt the quality, as Mike's live vocal work wasn't as varied and refined as it could have been. With nice video quality and audio clarity to boot, these are some quality videos from Skull After Betrayal's run, and look out for introductions of the band members at the end of the "Dagger to the Heart" video! (Note that Mike's only video since 2011 is this clip of him investigating a horde of Pokemon figurines, which works for what it is)

Channel Summary: Taylor's only videos both come from Norwood, Ontario hard rock band Three Days Grace's second headlining concert at The Essar Center from December 8th, 2009, and they're among the best YouTube videos from this concert that I've found! He got a solid angle of 3DG playing their songs "Never Too Late" and "The Good Life" (embedded below, as it's heavier), though hands can get in the way, and the camerawork is very shaky. The audio's pretty clear, though it does sound slightly muffled and tinny here and there, and "Never Too Late" is harder to hear thanks to the song's quietness combined with singing fans. It's great to see more good video footage from the last non-contest won hard rock headlining show at The Essar Center, and Three Days Grace fans and attendees of this concert would be wise to check Taylor's videos out!

Band Status Updates, Concert Date Changes, And New Videos!!

Here's a post full of assorted news items for this likely warm Tuesday, so we've got a pair of local metal act dissolutions, a couple of notes from Sault Michigan (including a band revival and concert date changes), and a pair of new videos from across the river, so read on below for all that you need to know!

It looks like local hardcore/death metal quartet Skull After Betrayl has broken up for a second time. They quietly deleted their Facebook page earlier in the spring, though other online pages still exist, luckily. A public statement hasn't been made about their breakup, but I can confirm that the split was completely amicable, and I can assume that frontman Mike Vincent's recent band search & guitarist Justin Polutanovich's new role in Borderline Divine were indicators that their status was in question. This ends a brief & uneventful reunion that started in October after their initial 2 month breakup last year, but after bassist Adam Brett briefly moved out of town in January, band updates stalled. I'm disappointed to see them officially throw in the towel, as they were steadily improving as a band during their initial early-mid 2011 run, which saw them open for the likes of The Dayglo Abortions and Titan's Eve. Hopefully the guys all stay in music, as they all were clearly talented or noticeably improving! Best of luck to Mike, Justin, Adam, and Anthony in the future, and I've moved Skull After Betrayl to our inactive local band links!

The other recent end is for ex-Browbeat frontman Dutch Vanderploeg's latest solo project, as he deleted his Facebook & Reverbnation pages at some point this spring. He usually wipes his band pages for every project he leads that dissolves, which is disappointing for fans, though he thankfully left his YouTube channel up this time. Dutch is and always has been a very talented musician, and I hope he revisits his original music again in the future! I find his music doesn't get the appreciation it's deserves, and hopefully this won't be the last we hear from him! As YouTube channels aren't really band pages, I've regrettably removed Dutch from our band links, but if he gets back into a band, you know they'll be linked & covered here!

Now to some positive stories, both from the Sault Michigan area, starting with a band revival! On May 4th, you may remember that Kincheloe metal band Chained Memories had disbanded for unannounced reasons, not long after singer Sean Roush had left. Well, just a week later, the band confirmed on their Facebook page that they're "back in business" and are looking for musicians with "any talent" to hit them up, presumably to join the band in some capacity. Whether Sean's back or if any other members are out isn't known yet, but the post implies that there is some member searches in the works. It's great to see Chained Memories giving this another go, and hopefully Mike & company can finally take off and accomplish big things in the area! The other Sault Michigan story is that Cheboygan metal trio Peril's next planned concert weekend at The Rapids Lounge at Kewadin Casino has been pushed back a week from July 20th & 21st to July 13th to 14th. A reason for the change hasn't been announced, but Peril have not confirmed concert dates beyond June yet on band pages, and Kewadin Casino have no one new booked for the July 20th weekend yet, as per their entertainment page, so the jury's out. The sooner the better, hopefully, so keep Peril's new next concert dates in mind for this summer!

Let's close with new videos, starting with a new video of Kinross hard rockers Banned from their concert at The Runway Bar in Hessel (50 minutes from Sault Michigan) on Saturday! Filmed by frequent filmer/family member Ashley Traynor and uploaded to her YouTube channel on Sunday, it's of Banned covering the Bachman/Turner Overdrive classic "Takin' Care of Business" at that concert! Lead vocals were provided by drummer Don Traynor (leaving singer Mike Straw to backing vocals), while Banned were rejoined by former bassist Alex Schrovenwever on rhythm guitar at this show as well, similarly to their March concert at The Bird. If Alex has permanently rejoined, band pages haven't confirmed his return, but it's good to see him back with the Traynors, even if just once! This is a solid cover, and Don sings well on it, but I've seen better videos of Banned. The colours are very washed out, dancers get in the way, Jim Pentland is barely visible, and I still wanna hear Mike sing more in Banned's live videos, but this is still another good video of Banned live, so give it a look below, and keep posted on Banned's next local & area dates at the above links!



Finally, here's a new promo video for Sault Michigan classical metal band Theatre of Night's new album "The Dawn's Early Light"! Though called their second promo video, it's effectively a replacement for their first one, as they made it private for unannounced reasons in the last week, merely saying that the original had "expired". Posted on their YouTube channel on Sunday, it is actually an improvement, as it moves any "Christmas Night" mentions to the end, lessening the seasonal vibe. The only real new information on "The Dawn's Early Light" in this video is that "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" will also be performed on the album, meaning that 9 of the 12 songs have now been announced. Sounds good to me, so check out Theatre of Night's new promo video below, and stay tuned for updates as we inch closer to the summer!

Napalm Death/Foggy Notions News, A Local Band's Return, And This Week's Classic Video!!

Things are certainly picking up news-wise in the local metal scene, so I think I might double up on posts tonight as a result. I have new concerts, videos, and so forth to get to (and weekend concert previews), but those will be tonight or tomorrow so the stories I want to get to first don't get overshadowed. That said, this post features this week's classic video and a local band's return, but first, here's some huge news concerning a major upcoming concert and it's new venue!

THIS SATURDAY'S Napalm Death concert has been moved from The Riuniti Hall to the bar formerly known as Foggy Notions! Yes, the Queen Street East bar will officially re-open for business on Saturday night, under new ownership with a new name and look, and I can confirm that the bar's new name is Feedback! Sounds like a good name, hopefully it sticks with fans! I assume it's safe now to confirm that the new owner of Feedback is Dismembertainment head and local guitarist Rich Moreland, who is also putting on the Napalm Death show, so it's a fitting first concert for the "new" bar! The only other change is that the doors will now open an hour earlier at 5:00 PM on Saturday. Yes, previously purchased tickets are still 100% usable, and it is STILL ALL AGES! The news was broken in an e-mail to concert attendees yesterday, and has since been added to the Facebook event page. No reason was announced for the venue change, but I hope it wasn't due to ticket sale concerns, as you know how huge this concert should be! I have to say, if there was a way to begin the era of Feedback with a bang, then having Napalm Death, Hallows Die, Wake, Shit Liver, & The Bear Hunters all on one night is the way to do it, and though I'll sadly be out of town this weekend, I know it will be an amazing concert and a great introduction to the local scene for Feedback! Stay tuned for more in the next few days when we preview this weekend's metal & hard rock concert schedule!

That said, while metalheads and old Foggy's fans are sure to be buzzing over the Feedback news, there is a more unfortunate side of the story, as was being discussed on SooToday last night, so I feel I should address it. SooToday's Carol Martin posted an article onto SooToday last night called "Foggy's next generation questioned by City Council", which basically outlines how City Council wants the Alcohol and Gaming Commission to consider the concerns of residents in the Foggy's area before transferring a liquor license to the new owners (For the record, the new ownership & name of the bar are not mentioned in the article.) Ward 4 Councillor Rick Niro wants the new owners to address concerns relating to noise, debris, and other issues that came up during the previous Foggy Notions eras, though he was clear in saying he's not against the reopening. Check the above links for the full article. Now, I'm not in a position to comment on what Rich has done with Foggy's/Feedback, but I know that he's following all the rules and taking all the right steps to ensure that everything will go smoothly. Considering that they're planning to reopen on Saturday, most of the work must already be done, and if he was planning to ignore any concerns, do you think it would have gotten this far?

I feel that if you willingly move into a neighbourhood near a bar that puts on concerts with non-acoustic bands, you should be prepared for noise, and should only have a right to call the police over it if they actually violate some noise ordinance. I'm sure in many cases, Foggy Notions was there before a noise complainer moved nearby, and they should have known that before moving into the area. There are other bars downtown that put on loud events near residences, and they don't get brought up at City Council over noise issues. That's just my opinion though, and I hope Rich gets no bad "feedback" over what goes on at Feedback in the future. The bar's in good hands, everyone will see that soon!

Now to some cool news for you Skull After Betrayl fans, as the local hardcore quartet have officially reunited! The band originally broke up in late July after the members parted ways with guitarist Justin Polutanovich and formed a new band named The Dead Kings with some new members, but it looks like Skull After Betrayl are back in action! The band relaunched their Facebook page earlier today, with frontman Mike Vincent confirming that they'll be ready for shows "soon" on his personal Facebook page. Their old lineup (including Justin on guitar) is back together, though bassist Adam Brett is now also listed for some singing, which should be interesting! With all that said, it looks like The Dead Kings have broken up, with their Facebook page deleted, which is disappointing, but hopefully Willis Tholberg & Jacob Cere get back into a new band soon! As for Skull After Betrayl, it's great to see them back, and hopefully the steady improvement we saw from them through the summer will continue when they return to the stage! Stay tuned for details on Skull After Betrayl's next shows as they come in!

And finally, here's this week's classic video! With the Napalm Death show upon us, it made perfect sense to tie in this week's video with one of the local opening bands, and I chose The Bear Hunters, specifically guitarist Josh Stephney! Before becoming a local fixture as Bring The Fallen's singer & The Bear Hunters' guitarist, Josh and his BTF bandmate Dan Souliere joined forces at the "In The Pines" guitar showcase at White Pines Collegiate & Vocational School on May 16th, 2008 to cover Tenacious D's "Tribute"! This was a solid cover with Josh on lead vocals, Dan on backing vocals, and both on guitar, and they mostly have the song down. Besides, it's Tenacious D, you've gotta do them justice! This video was filmed by an attendee of this event and was uploaded by Josh onto Facebook two days later. After uploading the video onto our YouTube channel, I also corrected the lighting to make it brighter and clearer, but you can still check out the original video at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=42347370570. A New Local Band, Two Newly Broken Up Bands, And This Week's Classic Video!!

Yes, my review of last night's Mares of Thrace concert is coming, but the videos I shot are giving me a lot of grief. The timing's off on a few of the videos so the music doesn't line up, and these are large files to convert and upload as it is. They're coming though, stay tuned to our Facebook page today for the new videos and photos as they get uploaded!

We have a new local band today, and it's a new Sault Ontario metal project named The Dead Kings! The band features 3/4s of the now broken up Skull After Betrayl (more on that in a second), with guitarist Mike Vincent, drummer Anthony D'Agostini, and bassist Adam Brett joining this new group. However, Adam will switch from bass to vocals in this new band, which should be interesting! I've found his bass skills needed a lot of work, so hopefully he can make his mark singing with The Dead Kings! Joining this new band on bass is Willis Tholberg (Mike and Adam's old bandmate in Despised Eyes), while Jacob Cere has also joined as their second guitarist. Will's a good pickup, but I admit not being familiar with Jacob as a guitarist, though me & him did both attend Bawating around the same time. How will The Dead Kings sound? Not sure yet, but their Facebook page hyped a death metal and hardcore sound, with influences seeming similar to those that influenced the members' older bands. With a new singer and lineup though, The Dead Kings will be interesting to hear once they debut, so stay tuned for updates, and become a fan while we wait for material at this location!

With that said, it's basically clear that Mike, Adam, and Anthony's old band Skull After Betrayal has broken up. Though no statement was officially made concerning their demise, their old Facebook page was quietly deleted recently, and The Dead Kings' Facebook page refers to SAB as one of their members' "past bands". I can say that the breakup did follow their split with guitarist Justin Polutanovich in late July, but rather than replace him, the guys opted to start a brand new band out of respect to Justin. This ends a five month run of public activity for Skull After Betrayal, which included a few high profile sets like opening for The Dayglo Abortions & Titans Eve at The Roosevelt Hotel, and being one of 11 local bands on the massive Sewer Swampstravaganja all ages concert in April. It's disappointing to see Skull After Betrayal end so suddenly, as they were definitely improving with each show they played, but I have a feeling that ending the band to move on to The Dead Kings will work out better with the new lineup and likely sound. We'll be watching, and of course, best of luck to Justin in whatever he moves to next musically, as he is a talented guitarist that would be a worthy addition to another local band!

The other newly broken up band is Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Elipzis, with an announcement posted on their Facebook page late last night. The breakup is due to the formation of a new Muskegon-based hard rock band named RedStone Riot that features Elipzis frontwoman Rachel Kiger, bassist Ryan Harrison, and drummer Wally David in their lineup. Guitarist Chris Webster is not taking part in the new band, despite his own Muskegon connections, with RedStone Riot enlisting two guitarists: Wally's old One Past Mars bandmate Tony Hulings, and a former guitarist in the Muskegon band Tracing Yesterday, though band pages have yet to confirm his name. Rumours had been flying on band pages concerning future Elipzis developments since Rachel and Ryan moved to Muskegon full time a few months ago, but now we know what the big news is. I have faith that RedStone Riot will be a successful and high impact hard rock band, but it is disappointing to see Elipzis end after such a promising run last year and this year, including TV appearances in the Muskegon area and a high profile appearance at least year's Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Festival.

When I saw Elipzis in Warren, Michigan in December, they put on a great show, and the guys were all class acts! That will surely be the same for RedStone Riot, and I have a feeling that even though they're not locally based, we'll be mentioning them on here again before you know it! Check the above links for more on RedStone Riot, and also, best of luck to Chris too in the future, he's very talented and we'd love to see him back out there in a new band!

And finally for today, here's this week's classic video! With Hempfest's local return coming fast, I knew this week's video had to connect to a band playing this year, and it was an easy choice, as the band we picked is Half Past! They're returning too after a six month hiatus while they found their new singer (Jordan Rains), and with that in mind, I found a video of theirs not previously on YouTube! This comes from former singer Luke LeBlanc, and it's of a June 2009 jam session where Half Past (then known as Fingerbone) covered "Hypnotize" by System of a Down! Though credited as a "drunken version", the band do a good job, though Luke definitely handles Serj's vocals better than Daron's when you compare to the original song. The video quality's good, but you only really see bassist Arthur Lacasse in frame, with Luke and guitarist Alain Fletcher only visible minimally on the sides, and drummer Chris Thompson isn't in frame at all. Good cover though, but remember, this is an old lineup, so go see Half Past 2.0 THIS WEEKEND at Hempfest, they'll be sure to impress!

Titan's Eve Concert Review!!

Finally, we have our Titan's Eve concert review for you guys! I wanted it up Tuesday, but my computer issues and earlier scheduled posts left this pushed back farther than I'd ever like it to be pushed back. So let's not waste any time, let's formally kick this review off, and hopefully I haven't forgotten too many details from it! So this concert took place on Monday night, which as you know, was both the Fourth of July & the end of our Titan's Eve contest for two band prize packages, and before I forget, congratulations to Gina-Lynn Scobie & Sativa Rose drummer Alex Palmer for winning the contest! As for the timing on Independence Day, the attendance did take a noticeable early hit due to a combination of the camping weekend and many potential attendees staying to watch the American fireworks, which helped lead to a later start time. Attendance did grow later in the set though!

Opening the show was local hardcore quartet Skull After Betrayl, and I have to say, this was probably the best I've heard them sound live so far! There's work to do, but their sound was more together and varied than we had seen at their previous shows, which is definitely good! Their set consisted of a mix of originals like "Death", "One In The Chamber", and "Zombitch", while also featuring select covers, including a solid rendition of Lamb of God's "Omerta"! I was happy to see many of their flawed parts from their last show amended, including the removal of Slayer's "Bloodline" (they need to work on the timing of it), Mike Vincent's deletion of most of his spoken word parts, and Adam Brett's slowly increasing bass abilities! Mike's diversifying his growling and screaming ever so slightly, and him and Justin's guitar abilities deserve more notice! I do want to see Mike incorporate more clean singing, or have Adam do backup, as it would help their sound, and they still need to work on timing on a lot of their songs, but it's not as noticeable on the originals. Things are looking up for Skull After Betrayl, hopefully they keep along this path!

Second were Sativa Rose, and if you were in for classic metal, these guys brought it in spades! Death metal too, I'll explain in a second. Sativa Rose are known for their high energy classic covers that, though lacking in vocals, are very proficient, and that continued on Monday with covers of everyone from Iron Maiden to Motley Crue and so forth! Andrew Angelic and Anthony Orazietti were as talented as ever on guitar, Alex Palmer's drumming was well on form, and Adam Veale's bass playing meshed as good as ever! Andrew didn't sing lead on any songs on Monday, ceding that spot to Adam, and in a surprise, guest singers for the second half of their set! Former Bring The Fallen guitarist Dan Souliere returned to his AtrophiA roots to sing lead on a cover of Megadeth's "In My Darkest Hour", then Dismembertainment owner Rich Moreland & Bear Hunters frontman Nik Deubel sang on a cover of Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell", before Rich handled lead for the remainder of the set, including on Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark At The Moon" and on all three of Sativa Rose's originals, one of which was brand new!

That was an unexpected surprise, and honestly, though I don't know if it's anywhere close to reality, Rich as Sativa Rose's full time singer for a death/classic metal hybrid band would be very intriguing! The fact that he learned their originals is interesting in itself! Nik and Dan did solid jobs too, and Sativa Rose on the whole had another entertaining set that we'll hopefully see more from very soon!

Headlining, of course, were Vancouver thrash quartet Titan's Eve, and being a big thrash fan already, I was really looking forward to Titan's Eve coming to town on Monday! Luckily, they did not disappoint, hammering out a short but sweet set of original thrash songs from their new album "The Divine Equal", including "The Tides Of Doom", "Becoming The Demon", and "Nightfall"! I wanted to compare their sound to a thrashier Demiricous, if that's accurate, but their brutal sound stood on it's own, especially when it finally got some good moshpits going! Brian Gamblin's harsh thrash vocals suited the songs well, and he and his brother Kyle shredded like mad on most of their songs! Very talented guys! Bassist Jesse Hord and drummer Casey Ory were great as well, and it was cool to see Casey get a drum solo, which we need more of locally, especially when he's as good as Casey was on Monday night! Titan's Eve were heavy as hell and kept things fast and aggressive to the point where I really enjoyed everything without having to nitpick the sound, which is a good sign! My only real complaint is that their set was short, but I imagine as they release more albums, their sets will get longer. Awesome headlining set by Titan's Eve, I hope they come back, as the Soo needs more thrash!

Awesome show on Monday night, here's hoping the next Dismembertainment show with out of town headliners (featuring the band on Jesse's shirt) will be just as good, and with a better attendance! It should, and we'll have more on that in tonight's news post, so stay tuned for that, and much more when it comes this evening! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Banned & Hollow), A New Local Band, And More News!!

One more news post for your Saturday before I go check out Lion Ride TONIGHT at The Rockstar Bar, and yes, there will be a review of it tomorrow on the site! In what might be our last full news post before the fourth anniversary (two days...), we have some big news to share today, including some updates from Chained Memories, the openers for MONDAY's Titan's Eve concert, and some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, but we'll start with the one connected to a new local band, so here's what you need to know!

Yes, we have a new local band to talk about, all the way from the Kinross/Kincheloe area outside of Sault Michigan! The band is called Banned, and they're a new local hard rock trio that features former TraynWreck guitarist Alex Traynor, his dad Don on drums, and bassist Alex Schrovenwever, with all three sharing vocal duties. Nice to see Alex back out there, and the family connection is cool to see! I like how many Sault Michigan-area bands have family connections, it's actually nice to see families banding together in the name of rock over there! According to descriptions on their new Facebook page (launched around June 8th), they will "make you rock the night away", and have influences ranging from AC/DC, Van Halen, and The Darkness to Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, and Grand Funk Railroad! Interesting mix of styles there, I wonder how they'll sound? We'll have a preview of that in a second, but first, they're making their live debut on July 21st at The Rudyard Township Park in nearby Rudyard, Michigan for a Music In The Park event that evening! They'll have a full 2 hour set for this outdoor concert, which looks to be all ages with a 7:00 PM start time, and there's no announced cover charge. Click here for more details!

But how do Banned sound? Specifically, I'm not sure, but if the videos posted by Alex's sister/Don's daughter Ashley Traynor are any indication, we might get some solid hard rock! She uploaded two videos from a talent show performance from January 15th onto her YouTube channel that month, and they feature Don (on lead vocals and drums), Alex, and bassist (for this set) Steve Jacobus playing 4 cover songs: "Bad Company" by Bad Company, AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", and Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me"! Don's vocals are best on the AC/DC covers, getting a nice volume, and Alex has a nice stage presence and some real guitar skill for his age! There may just be something here, so check out 2/3rds of Banned from this January performance in the video below!

The other new concert is extremely intriguing in it's own right, and if you missed this band and it's variants over the past few years, then get excited, as Hollow are coming back! Well, for two shows anyway. Yes, the local metal band featuring former Metal Militia and Carbon Black bandmates are reuniting in August, and that includes guitarist Tym Morrison (now of Caveman Morrison), bassist Dan Beaupre (now of The Southern Fried Band), and former Dicky Swift Band/Buster Cherry bandmates Terry Eaton on guitar & Vinnie Milosevich on drums, all from the classic lineup! However, in lieu of the absent Luigi Miceli (is he still in music?), former Carbon Black frontman Travis Sharpe will sing with Hollow for these reunion shows, which will be awesome to see again! It's been a long while since Travis, Terry, or Vinnie have played locally (to my knowledge at least), and it's great to see them back! The band will reunite for just two shows next month, taking place on August 5th at The Rockstar Bar & August 6th at The Canadian Nightclub, so it's like your usual weekend sets, just at different venues. No word yet on if Hollow will play any of their old bands' originals, but there will be lots of covers in store to bring the metal to local fans once again!

A 10:30 PM start time is estimated for both shows, you must be 19 to attend either, and I'd expect a nominal cover charge of under $5 for both, knowing from past experience. It's great to see Tym, Dan, and company back together after so long (too long), and hopefully lots of metalheads show up to rock out with Hollow for old time's sake! I should be at one (likely at The Canadian), but either works! I'll keep you guys posted, and if the photo I used above isn't of a Hollow lineup, my apologies. I used the best one available that didn't have another band name slapped on it.

Thirdly today, have you been wondering who's opening for Titan's Eve at The Roosevelt Hotel on Monday night? Actually, you may already know, cause the Facebook event page for the show was launched on Wednesday! I know it's kinda late, but I heard the news AFTER my Wednesday news post, and I didn't have much to report for a full news post until today. So, better late than never, here are the openers for Titan's Eve in two nights! One is Sativa Rose, who'll bring their classic metal assault back to The Rosie just four nights after rocking the most recent Thursday metal show! Great to see them back again, they're a welcome sight at any metal concert, and always deliver some shredding good times! The other confirmed opening band is local hardcore quartet Skull After Betrayal, in their first show since opening for The Dayglo Abortions last month! Hopefully their sound continues to improve on Monday night as Mike, Adam. Justin, and Anthony continue to carve out their place in the local scene with their own brand of hardcore and death metal! The only other new item to report (beyond the poster on your right, nice work!) is that there will indeed be a $4 cover charge for this concert, but for this quality of bands, no need to complain!

I'll absolutely be at the concert! It's a great spot to celebrate our 4th anniversary, Titan's Eve kick ass, and we have a contest to wrap up that day as well! And finally, we come full circle as we go right back to the Kincheloe area to talk about a young local band, this time, Chained Memories! Firstly, the band quietly parted ways with guitarist Jacob Zeeryp (ex-Outshined) after a very brief tenure with the band in May and June. No announcement was ever made on why he left, but he was quietly removed from their lineups on their pages. Disappointing, but hopefully he gets back into a band, his old work in Outshined wasn't bad for Christian hard rock! The other big news is that they've launched a new website, which is fairly barren as of yet, but it has a nice design, and it does confirm that they're looking for extra band members! Specifically, they want a second guitarist and a bassist between the ages of 14 & 18, preferably living in the Sault Michigan area. Contact the band for more details at the above links, cause I'm sure Mike and Ryan could use some talented musicians to help get the band out there soon! Promising guys, from what I've heard, hopefully they can get to the next steps soon! Stay tuned for Chained Memories updates as they come in!

Dayglo Abortions/Metal Night #20 Review!!

Hey guys, it's time for my review of last night's 20th Roosevelt Hotel metal night, headlined by none other than The Dayglo Abortions! How'd it go? I'll tell you in today's review, so let's not waste any time! First things first though, I want to apologize to Shit Liver, as I regrettably got to The Rosie late and missed their entire set. Everything seemed to go wrong in the 9:00 hour in terms of trying to get there, and I'm really sorry. I'll make it up to you guys though! (Edited on June 18th at 6:44 PM)

So when I got to The Rosie (finally) last night, I was pleased to see a huge attendance (bigger than I've ever seen there), and luckily, tables near the stage were cleared out for the masses. Trust me, that was a good move! With Shit Liver already done, the first band I was able to see were local metal quartet Sativa Rose, who delivered another fun and high energy set of classic metal covers! Though I missed hearing their original "Fall From Grace", their assortment of covers ranging from Megadeth & Pantera to Iron Maiden & Motley Crue were well recieved! Patchcord issues for Adam Veale aside, the band were on fire all set long, especially from the blistering solos provided by Andrew Angelic & Anthony Orazietti! Their big flaw is still in the vocal department, but I did notice that on "Bellows of the Beast" and on their cover of "In My Darkest Hour" that, when given the right song, Adam & Andrew can sing in a fitting way! Also good to see Nik Deubel & Rich Moreland back to sing "Cowboys From Hell" with them, and before I forget, give Rich some huge kudos for booking this concert! Great set from Sativa Rose, hopefully they have some more exciting stuff on the horizon!

Next were newer local metal band Skull After Betrayal, who recently switched from a death metal to a hardcore style. How'd they sound last night though? There's good things there, but there's work to be done. Mike Vincent, though a talented guitarist, needs to shake things up vocally. Most of their songs saw him either talking or yelling in a low fashion. He's honestly more suited for death metal singing, but with practice, he'll get better! Adam Brett's bass work is improving too, but he's gotta play with more strings than we've seen from him. Justin Polutanovich and Anthony D'Agostini were really good though, they're nice fits! Though I missed hearing "One In The Chamber", Skull After Betrayal had lots of originals in store for fans that seemed to go over fairly well, though they'll get better with time. Their set capping cover of Slayer's "Bloodline" was really off timing-wise, but again, this should improve as they play more often. They have promise, they really do, but they just need some fine tuning and live experience, and before you know it, Skull After Betrayal will be rocking it with the best of them!

The last local band of the night was, in their Roosevelt Hotel debut, Frightlight! With all the classic makeup and stage decorations to set the mood, this talented quintet launched into another fun punk/metal set that I've missed over the past couple of months! Now seeing that many of the fans in attendance were Dayglo Abortions fans, you know that they'd be in for some high energy punk, and Frightlight brought it, and the best crowd reaction to that point of the night! My only major complaints for their performance are that Johnny Pints' vocals seemed to deteriorate later into the set (especially on "World War Z") and Rick Styles didn't play anything behind his head, which would have been awesome for this audience! Originals like "C.H.U.D.", "She Screams", and "Dead Town Anywhere" kept the crowd going and got some good pits started, while the Misfits and Fitswitch covers were also nice to hear! Great set from Frightlight, whose punk/metal mix is always bound to cause a horrorific good time, and hopefully they're back on stage again soon!

And finally, in their long awaited return, Canadian punk legends The Dayglo Abortions! Without any critique of their sound, I just want to say that the best and most insane moshpit that I've EVER seen at The Rosie was during their set! Holy shit, they were going at it really hard, and it was quite an atmosphere to be around! I'm admittedly not a Dayglo scholar, but I'm well aware and respectful of their status as punk and crossover thrash legends, and they brought an awesome set last night! The Cretin's riffing was loud and heavy, though his voice didn't stack up as well live as it had on studio albums. Very quiet compared to what I've heard, but he kept us entertained and eager for more! Willy Jak's bass work complimented everything well, and drummer Blind Mark (who really is blind) was impressive as a punk drummer, whether he can see or not! Though I know their lyrical content can be controversial, not a soul at The Rosie cared, as they were rocking too hard for us to pick it apart! So much aggression and attitude, and the band looked happy to be playing for such an animated crowd, so hopefully The Dayglo Abortions come back sooner rather than later! Amazing show and environment!

Again, huge kudos to Rich Moreland at Dismemebertainment for this concert, hopefully his next shows (at The Rosie or otherwise) go over huge like this one! LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (River Witch), A New Solo Project, And Much More!!

Hey guys, hope last night's Unleash The Archers show was a blast! Today, we have a bunch of scattered news stories, including a lineup switch at an upcoming concert, a lineup change for a newer local band, tons of videos from a recent show, and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, but first, here's a new local solo project!

Local metal guitarist Andrew Angelic is likely well known locally for his work in bands like Sativa Rose (among many others), but now he's launched a solo project! Andrew opened up a solo MySpace page on Thursday, and despite listing his genres as crunk and pop, you have nothing to fear by listening! The mostly-bare page does have one posted track, untitled at present, and it's really nice! It's basically a slow extended solo piece that flows really nicely, and though it has a softer atmosphere about it, his guitar work really shines, and his talent is clear as clear can be! The audio quality isn't as good though, there's some background fuzz, but it doesn't take away from the track too much. Very nice work, I hope Andrew puts his songwriting skills to continued good use with some more solo (and Sativa Rose) material, and hopefully his solo project grows further from here! Next up, here are those LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! Remember on Thursday when I mentioned that I missed a couple of concerts at The Cozy Corners Tavern & Grill in nearby Barbeau, Michigan featuring Sault Michigan hard rockers River Witch? Well, I won't miss any more this summer (hopefully), as Cozy Corners' website has an event calendar that lists a bunch more River Witch dates for the next few months! Five dates are announced for River Witch in Barbeau through September, including shows on July 9th, 29th, and 30th, and September 23rd & 24th! All but the July 9th show are weekend sets, with the Friday on the July 9th weekend reserved for another band, Florida duo Case & Davidson. All of these shows have 9:00 PM start times, there's no announced cover charge, and a 21+ age limit is likely. Check the above links for more details! Of course, River Witch's spotty history of Facebook updates means they haven't announced these shows officially, but if the venue says they're on, then that's as good a source as any! Nice to see them back at Cozy Corners, it looks like a nice venue, and their hard rocking sounds will fit in there! Stay tuned for River Witch updates as I hear them, and remember to see them at the end of the month at Kewadin Casino & Lemmafest!

Now to some more cool updates, and first, if you were at The Roosevelt Hotel on Thursday and saw a camcorder & tripod set up across from the stage, were you wondering why? Well, it's because The Bear Hunters filmed their entire set! I'm not sure who did the filming itself, but 10 songs are now posted on the band's official YouTube channel, including their songs "Overthrown", "Condemned", "Bloodthirst", "Casualties of War", "Karma", "Succumb to Eternity", "Dominate", "Collapse The Sun", and "Render This Void", along with their cover of Amon Amarth's "Guardians of Asgaard"! Their encore set without Josh Stephney hasn't been posted (at least not yet), so their additional covers and work-in-progress new original aren't up to watch yet. The quality's nice on these videos, better than my new camera (remember, they used a pro-quality camcorder), though it can be dark, especially when fans crowd near the front of the stage. Audio's nice too, everything comes through really well! Nice to see some more good quality video footage of a band like this, especially with this amount of videos! Now here's a couple of notes relating to Roosevelt Hotel metal nights. First, this completely slipped me by until after their debut last week, but new local death metal band Bring The Misery have parted ways with bassist Kory Derasp and replaced him Tyler St. Amour, who is drummer Travis St. Amour's brother. No explanation was given for Kory's exit, but Tyler was quietly added to Bring The Misery's lineup on their Facebook page. Tyler was indeed on bass on Thursday for their debut, but I still had the old lineup info when I did my review, which has since been edited to fix the mistake. I don't know Kory or Tyler personally, and without hearing about the switch beforehand, you can understand my error, hopefully. That said, best of luck to Kory, and Tyler seems like a good fit with Bring The Misery!

My other note is for the Rosie metal night on June 16th, as there's been a band change. Local hardcore quartet Skull After Betrayal have replaced WinkStinger as the headliners for that night's show. No reason has been given for why WinkStinger dropped out, and Dismembertainment haven't confirmed the switch yet, but I have two reliable sources that should help confirm the news. Skull After Betrayal announced their involvement on their own Facebook page, and Frightlight announced it on their own event page for the show, complete with updated event poster! Looks like a Kevin Powe creation, nice work! It'll be interesting to see how Skull After Betrayal sound with their new genre and material in hand, especially as headliners! Hopefully I can make it out! For more on both of the above stories, check the above links!
