A New Addition To Our Band Links, A Mid-Week Concert Preview, And Much More!!

In terms of our backlog clearout, yesterday's posts somewhat set us back, as one was a scheduled feature post and the other only knocked one topic off of the list. However, today's post will clear six items from our list, so here's what you should know via some recent shorter updates, a concert preview for tomorrow evening, and leading off, a belated addition to our band links and full coverage, so here's what you should know!

After their well received closing set on Rotaryfest Saturday last month, it's high time that we finally roll classic/hard rock cover trio The Sidekicks into our full coverage! The band has generally been cagey when it comes to sharing media and setlist hints from their shows, which is what has kept them out of our links for this long, but what they played at Clergue Park last month definitely points to The Sidekicks fitting based on bands that we already actively cover. Active since at least February 2020 when they played at the United We Jam! fundraiser right before the pandemic began, their Facebook page was only launched in August 2021, and they have had a steady lineup since then, featuring singer/drummer Tracey Hilderley (formerly of bands like Tripod The Dog, Boogie Fever, and Domina) alongside guitarist Steve Cardiff and bassist Dan Beaupre (of 100 Gran, Griphook, and Double Down fame).

Pandemic restrictions are partly to blame for their relative lack of shows from before 2023, and while they're not the most regularly seen cover band going, they're probably best recognized from their appearances at The Water Tower Pub in the past three years, along with scattered gigs at venues like Jay's Piston Broke Pub, The Dive Gastro Pub, and Beck's Pub (sorry, Beck's Bar). Tracey, Steve, and Dan have also been seen at Rotaryfest Stage 1 in 2023, that year's Bushplane Days, and a 2024 Summer Concert Series gig at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion. As noted above, The Sidekicks don't post videos of themselves on social media, perhaps with the thought process of "if you want to see/hear us, come to our gigs!", but from what I caught of them on Stage 1 at Rotaryfest last month, they covered the likes of Heart, The Cult, Pat Benatar, Sloan, The Scorpions, The Tragically Hip, and Judas Priest, among others.

The Sidekicks will be a unique band alone from having a frontwoman who sings and drums simultaneously, and while I did find that Tracey's vocals could be overly theatrical on more upbeat rockers, she adjusts well when songs call for it, and they do have some interesting cover selections that other bands don't tackle. Steve and Dan are solid musicians to match, and Steve is (to me) an underrated lead guitarist that I'm surprised isn't talked about as much. There is a new Sidekicks video to share from Rotaryfest shot by an external page that we'll address when we cover the remaining Rotaryfest videos, but click here to see our video of them covering "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" from last month! 

Next up, here's our latest mid-week concert preview concerning the prolific local classic/hard rock musician Tym Morrison, whose weekly arrangement at The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post continues TOMORROW! With five more shows to go for the former Caveman Morrison frontman for this seasonal run, tomorrow's date should provide fans with more unplugged rock favourites, so keep things in mind if you're in the area or are up for a drive north! If you'd rather see Tym on a better day for concerts or somewhere else, we will preview his next Desbarats show on Friday in this weekend's previews, plus his new late notice matinee confirmation for Sunday. These shows are 6:30-8:00 PM affairs with no cover charge or age limit, and as this is an outdoor event, 9&10 News is calling for sunny skies with temperatures in the 20-22° range. Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

 

• On June 2nd, Kewadin Casinos' Facebook page announced a new series of upgrades at their five locations to begin that summer, including "bar and restaurant/deli renovations". However, in the linked press release, the only way that this may affect SMS coverage is that the Sault Michigan branch is getting a new sports bar that begins construction next summer. Is this replacing The Rapids Lounge or is this something that will exist alongside it? Time will tell, but see above for more on all levels of upgrades at Kewadin Casinos in the coming months!
• The local openers have been announced for Australian hard rock band The Lazys' headlining concert at Blaster Powerhouse in Sault Ontario on October 9th, and surprisingly, it will be folk/country quartet The Golden Scoundrels! They revealed their involvement last week via the poster for their Full Chisel Tour this fall, though note that the former Soo Blaster has yet to visibly corroborate this in the full concert promotion. While 3/4ths of The Scoundrels have experience in hard rock/metal bands, they are still an interesting genre contrast, so hopefully they help pull a sizeable crowd in two months' time! • In two more examples of local classic/hard rock cover bands using Facebook "Stories" to share self-destructing vertical videos that I can't link to or feature here, Quite Frankly did so from their April concert at The Water Tower Pub (where they covered Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son"), and Silent 9 just did so over the weekend for a very blurry video of them covering Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" at a recent private event, with Jess singing on stage alongside an attendee. I will never understand why some bands and venues choose to share videos as "Stories" that can only be seen once or twice before vanishing into the ether, but alas, you may have missed those ones as of late!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison) & Eastern Upper Peninsula Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's another busy weekend for hard rock concerts in the Twin Saults and EUP, and its largely because of the EUP why we have to break our previews into three posts! The plan is to look at this weekend's Rock N' Roll Ave, Bone Yard 225, and Generations concert (plus WestFest II) in our next post, with Sunday's short notice Curtis McKenzie matinee as part of our next general news post once we get back in the swing of clearing out our backlog. For now, here's what you should know, starting with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT in Sault Ontario and another new northern date!

Just one day removed from his late notice addition to the Maddy's Mighty Mutts Family Fun Day (more on that hopefully soon), local classic/hard rock musician Tym Morrison will play at The Up & Down Lounge at 24 Second Line West for a second straight Thursday TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, Tym only announced this show via his Facebook event page on Tuesday, and at press time, The Up & Down Lounge has not corroborated that he is playing there again TONIGHT. They did start with two straight Jason Taillefer solo acoustic concerts there, so if Tym is playing two straight too, is that the scheduling pattern here, or is Tym legitimately a short notice booking? Regardless, it's good to see Tym staying busy as the summer marches on, and hopefully there's a decent crowd in the west end TONIGHT for his unplugged classic and hard rock covers! Remember, acts play indoors at the Up & Down despite the patio being open.

In one more new booking, Tym will make the 45 minute drive southeast to Ije's Place in nearby Desbarats on Friday, August 14th, as per this Facebook event page! This will be Tym's third show at Ije's, following two shows at the Central Algoma cafe & bakery last month, most recently this past week. though be advised that Ije's Facebook page hasn't plugged that Tym will be back there yet either. Both TONIGHT'S Up & Down Lounge show and next week's trip to Desbarats are 6:00 PM concerts with no announced cover charge, and while the Up & Down gig is likely 19+, Ije's should be all ages as it's not a nightclub. Next up, let's head across the border to Michigan for some hard rock concerts in the EUP, and we'll start in St. Ignace, where local classic/hard rock trio Peril will return for a special outdoor concert TONIGHT as part of the town's Music By The Bay summer concert series at American Legion Park! Aside from one or two annual gigs in this series, Peril (and Scarkazm) exclusively play at Kewadin Casino when they make trips north of the Mackinac Bridge, so if you want to see Jeff, Howard, and Brooks outside, earlier in the day, or just somewhere other than a Kewadin branch, keep tonight's show in mind! If you can't make it, Peril will be back on Friday the 21st, though be advised that they have not corroborated either booking on their Facebook page in recent weeks. TONIGHT'S concert runs from 7:00-8:30 PM, and it is absolutely free & all ages. Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for sunny skies and temperatures of 72-74° (22-23° Celsius) tonight.

Looks like good conditions are in store for TONIGHT in St. Ignace, so if you'll be in the area or up for the hour's drive from the Soo, consider swinging by for Peril's next local concert! Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's Peril live a few years back!

Now let's take the half hour drive northeast along Saint Martin Bay to Hessel, where rebranded local hard rock cover band Nate's Chow will play their first show under this name TOMORROW NIGHT at The Islander Bar, but that's not all from them! As you may recall, the band formerly known as Unfortunate Sun rebranded as Nate's Chow (taking their name in part from their predecessors Fake Chow) after frontman Skip Parish left the band in March. Their Facebook description now lists them as a trio with Jody, Brett, and Jason sharing vocals, and while the band's AI-generated imagery does include photos featuring a band of four animals, including their beaver mascot (Nate?) on vocals, drummer Jason VanLuven confirmed on the venue's Facebook page that this will be "our new 3 piece singing debut". We will get into their other three new dates (all in September) in an upcoming post so we can keep our weekend concert previews on a reasonable schedule.

This one-night-only concert takes place tomorrow at 8:00 PM with a 21+ age limit and no cover charge. It will be interesting to hear how Nate's Chow sound, especially if they lean more to the generally heavier covers that Unfortunate Sun played compared to Fake Chow, though with Skip absent (and back in his country/southern rock cover duo Blood, Sweat, and Beers), things could be wide open, especially as the rest of the band aren't established frontmen. That, or "Nate" the beaver is singing, if you believe AI! See above for more details, and here's the former Unfortunate Sun live!

We'll close this post back in St. Ignace, where Ontonogan hard rock quartet Nolium will make their EUP debuts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Northern Pines Lounge at their Kewadin Casino branch! The heaviest and most originals-focused of the three new-to-the-EUP touring bands debuting under the Kewadin umbrella this summer (our Rock N' Roll Ave preview is in our next post!), fans of modern grunge, alternative, and hard rock will take to their cover range, and fresh off of a show in Wisconsin for them, why not zip east across the peninsula? Nolium are a solid band with good enthusiasm and some eclectic song choices that bands in the EUP don't often play, so keep their shows in mind for this weekend! As usual for Kewadin lounges, these are 9:00 PM affairs with 21+ age limits and no cover charges. See above for more details, and here's a full-set video of Nolium live!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison), Wednesday Concert Previews, And A New Video!!

(Updated at 6:08 PM) With there being a pair of mid-week concerts of note TOMORROW (one being a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT), let's focus our latest post around them, plus some more upcoming new concerts and a new live video, so here's what you should know on this Tuesday morning!

Local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will return to The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post TOMORROW, and while we're on the subject, let's roll the rest of his August dates there into our calendar! Apologies for the short notice on TOMORROW's concert, I really should have got the ball rolling on his August dates last week, as I wanted to go month-by-month with them given the amount. August 2026 has four Wednesdays, so fans of the former Caveman Morrison and Nostalgic Band frontman can see Tym go unplugged at The Trading Post TOMORROW and then on August 12th, 19th, and 26th, with his weekly summer concert arrangement at this outdoor stage scheduled to run through mid-September. Hopefully weather holds out throughout, and Tym's skilled covers should get a solid reception TOMORROW and beyond! All four shows have adjusted 7:00-9:00 PM start times.

These are all ages concerts with no cover charge, and 9&10 News is calling for 20-21° temperatures and partly cloudy skies during Tym's scheduled two hour block TOMORROW. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and for a preview, here's Tym live! 

Finally, let's head to The Roberta Bondar Pavilion, where local dog rescue charity Maddy's Mighty Mutts will host their first ever Family Fun Day! To promote Maddy's work and give back to the community, attendees tomorrow can expect a barbecue, craft and food vendors, kids activity, a beer tent, dogs up for adoption, and more, so visit the official Facebook event page for full non-musical details! A stacked lineup of local musicians are supporting Maddy's Mighty Mutts tomorrow, including anywhere from nine to eleven acts, though unfortunately, I have not seen a verified performance schedule. Based on the advertised 8 hour timeframe, I'd be expecting some half-hour long sets, especially from the solo acts. The listed band order puts the bands first, and in order, they include young local hard rock quartet 5 Dollar Bribe, southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225 (with new single in tow!), Josh & Todd from local folk/bluegrass quartet The Golden Scoundrels...

...as their duo spinoff Half Scoundies, classic/hard rock cover duo TNT (Terry Eaton n' Travis Sharpe from Soundcheck unplugged), and country rock cover veterans Tex Riviera & The Ride (not "Tex & The Relix") The solo performers include Bone Yard frontman Greg "The Ranting Rockstar" Simpson (featuring a guest appearance by Travis from TNT), Dive Gastro Pub regular Arin Karki (a.k.a. Arin Jung), Dodge This/ex-Phatstick singer/guitarist Jason Taillefer, newer local country musician Jazmine "Jazz Marie" Ladouceur, former Project 421/Eclipse frontman Curtis McKenzie, country cover veteran Leslie Cook, and in a late addition via this AI generated poster from this morning, the aforementioned Tym Morrison. That's quite a solid lineup of familiar faces, many not regularly seen on multi-band bills like this, so keep all of this in mind! However, be advised that the new AI poster omits three acts (Tex & The Ride, Arin Karki, and Leslie Cook), even though Tex's Facebook page confirmed an hour prior that they were playing tomorrow.

Have any of the three dropped out (theoretically, someone must have for Tym to join this bill), or did Maddy's and/or the AI program forget a few names? We'll let you know if anything concrete is said! Also newly confirmed is that unspecified "friends" will guest with TNT during their set. Alas, the Wednesday scheduling is far from ideal, especially for an event starting before people working 9:00-5:00 are off the clock, but hopefully there's a decent turnout given the quality lineup & other activities. I have not seen any firm postings indicating a cover charge, but bring cash just in case to support Maddy's work and the vendors on site! This is absolutely an all ages event (dogs are welcome too!), and it is slated to run from 2:00-10:00 PM. Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for partly cloudy skies tomorrow with temperatures ranging from 18-22°, and while the Roberta Boundary Bondar Pavilion tent is acknowledged, the show should avoid tonight's rain.

This video was uploaded to their Facebook page from their headlining date at Blaster Powerhouse on Saturday, and features Jayce, Tyler, Randy, and Chase playing their own original "Cold". A 1990s tinged hard rock song with grunge influences and some surprising screams from Jayce, this is a promising start that seemed to go over well this past weekend! I'd definitely be interested to hear more original music from 5 Dollar Bribe, but will they play this tomorrow under the tent? LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Wax Mannequin & Tym Morrison) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

It's time to dive into another round of weekend concert previews, and while things aren't as hectic as the last two weeks, there are still enough shows to get to where we'll have to break things in twain, so shows that are only on Saturday and/or Sunday (Generations, 5 Dollar Bribe, Bone Yard 225, and the Barge Bash) will be in tomorrow's post. Now, here's what you should know on both sides of the border for bands playing shows tonight and tomorrow in some fashion, including a pair of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will play his third solo acoustic concert in as many days TOMORROW NIGHT at Ije's Place in nearby Desbarats! Apologies for the short notice, this show was first announced via his Facebook event page on Monday. You may recall seeing late notice word that Tym would be making the 45 minute drive southeast to Desbarats (hometown of Central Algoma Secondary School) four weeks ago for his debut gig there, which I unfortunately missed at the time, so thankfully I heard about this one! Fresh off of shows at The Trading Post and the Up & Down Lounge, Tym should have lots of entertaining hard and classic rock covers in store for fans TOMORROW, and clearly his July 3rd show went well for him to get called back again before July is up! Ije's Place is located off of Highway 17 at 4 Lake Huron Drive, and is roughly between St. Joseph Island and Bruce Mines near the edge of our coverage area.

This indoor concert goes down TOMORROW from 6:00-8:00 PM, this is likely all ages given that Ije's is a cafe & bakery, and there is no announced cover charge. The 2 minute clip sees Tym covering much of The Black Crowes' "She Talks To Angels" and doing a solid job of it, but alas, the filmer didn't zoom in at all, so full screen is your friend here. As this was live-streamed on Ije's Facebook page, it will vanish early next week unless re-uploaded or converted, so watch it below (while you can?) 

Next up, Hamilton "weird folk art punk" solo project Wax Mannequin will return to the Soo TOMORROW NIGHT for a concert at... Unnecessary Noise? Again, apologies for the short notice, the show was first announced via its Facebook event page this past Friday. As to my understanding, Unnecessary Noise is the private location that has been used for recent Underground Events SSM concerts like the Danger Box one and Soopfest, but the space now has an official name, and it's being used for public event promotion going forward, even if the address isn't at a public locale ("ask a punk"). This isn't entirely new for Wax Mannequin, as Chris Adeney's last show here in August 2024 was also not at a standard venue, instead a residence's backyard. Hopefully Unnecessary Noise proves a fitting spot for Wax Mannequin's return, and their noise definitely isn't unnecessary, with punk and metal tinges across their wide ranging setlist and discography!

Fellow Hamilton alt-folk/punk solo project The Kettle Black will make their apparent local debut tomorrow while on tour with Wax Mannequin, while comedy rock band The Floor Between Us (featuring Stones & Crows bassist Nicholas Gingras) will return as openers after doing the honours two years ago. Like in 2024, this is an all ages concert at 8:00 PM, but unlike that Piecing It Together Shows-promoted event, admission is "pay-what-you-can" with $15 recommended (down from $20 in advance/$25 at the door last time). This should be a fun concert for fans of eclectic original music with punk and hard rock influences across the board, so see above for more details, and here's Wax Mannequin live!

We'll head to the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan to round out this post, starting with local classic/hard rock cover quarter Tarnished, who will make their way an hour south to St. Ignace TOMORROW NIGHT when they rock American Legion Park as part of St. Ignace's Music By The Bay summer concert series! Once again, St. Ignace is impressively hosting a different live music act daily until Labour Day, with tomorrow's show being the first of two that Tarnished are playing under the canopied stage at 200 North State Street this year, the other being the penultimate show for 2026 on September 5th. Hopefully tomorrow's concert is a smash hit for Alex, Josh, Chris, and Ron, though note that the band has not corroborated the booking on their Facebook page at press time. Tomorrow's concert takes place at 7:00 PM with no cover charge or age limit, and lawn chairs are suggested given the park setting.

Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for a 40% chance of rain during showtime tomorrow, with temperatures of 72-73° (22-23° Celsius). Yes, artists get to play under a roof, but attendees aren't so lucky, so if you are at all concerned about the forecast and/or the potential for the show being cancelled or abbreviated by the rain, keep tabs with Tarnished for updates. Finally, let's head north to Sault Ste. Marie, where Petoskey classic/hard rock cover quartet The Blitz are scheduled to make their local debuts at The Rapids Lounge at the local Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! While not mentioned in new social media posts in the past month & a half, The Blitz are the first of three non-local hard rock cover bands debuting at Kewadin lounges over the next month. Videos from after their 2022 reunion point to a well varied but often heavy range of covers played with talent and professinalism, and I do hope that things go well so they can blitz a local stage again in the coming months! As usual for Kewadin lounges, this weekend's shows both have 9:00 PM start times, no cover charges, and 21+ age limits. LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), Mid-Week Concert Previews, And An Inactive Band Note!!

No rest for the wicked, as while the weekend concert previews are over, there are also a healthy amount of weekday concerts to preview over the next few days, so let's address them tonight (including a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT), so here's what you should know, along with a prominent band now back in our inactive links!

Firstly for this mid-week batch of previews, local classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will bring his acoustic solo act back to The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post on WEDNESDAY, but after that, he will debut at The Up & Down Lounge on THURSDAY NIGHT as well! Apologies for the short notice on THURSDAY'S concert, it was only announced via its Facebook event page yesterday. The Up & Down Lounge (at 24 Second Line West beside the Surplus Furniture & Mattress Warehouse) is scarcely known as a concert venue, last seen on the SMS when Silent 9 played a private event last fall, but they're experimenting with outdoor patio concerts on THURSDAYS this summer, with Dodge This' Jason Taillefer first up there for weeks #1 and #2, though as best as I can tell, musicians perform indoors. They are looking for more artists too, leaning towards acoustic acts and DJs.

Preceding his Up & Down debut on THURSDAY, Tym is back at The Mike Case Stage on Wednesday, so you have two outdoor(?) chances to see his unplugged hard rock covers mid-week! Wednesday's Trading Post show is at 6:30 PM, the Up & Down show runs from 6:00-9:00 PM on THURSDAY, the latter show is 19+, and neither has an announced cover charge. 9&10 News currently has 21-24° temperatures on Wednesday with sunny skies, and if things are 100% outside, it should be even warmer the next day. Next up, we'll head to Beck's Bar, where they will host a special Tuesday concert TOMORROW NIGHT headlined by Cornwall hardcore/metal quartet Hellrager! Last seen locally at 2023's Northern Vibe Festival (after dropping out of the last two), this will be their first show in Sault Ste. Marie proper, and will also mark the local return of former Spades GT/Caym guitarist Jay Sarrazin, who filled in on bass with the former Jack Spades at Northern Vibe in 2022. It's good to see Beard back in town, and hopefully Hellrager melt faces with their bluesy yet in-your-face attack tomorrow night! Local openers tomorrow at Beck's include local death metal quartet Eden Plague, in the former Bear Hunters' first gig since Rotaryfest earlier this month, as well as their debut at the 232 Goulais Avenue nightclub. Also joining them tomorrow is extreme metal quintet With Gunfire in their first concert set of 2026.

No idea where the former Sault Side Squad have been lately, but hopefully more of their promising original slate is unleashed tomorrow! Promoted by Eden Plague drummer (and fellow Spades alum) Johnny Belanger, tomorrow's concert runs from 6:30-10:00 PM, which is just as well given the work/school night timing. This will be a 19+ show, but surprisingly, it will have no cover charge, so if you need an extra excuse to come out, now you have it! Also, let's go downtown for another free concert TOMORROW NIGHT, this time from local Pearl Jam tribute band Even Flow! Last seen at the first Downtown Street Party of 2026 last month (more on the second one soon), tomorrow evening's concert will see them gather under The Roberta Bondar Pavilion tent as the fifth of eleven bands in the City of Sault Ste. Marie's annual Summer Concert Series, which sees live covers-leaning local bands perform free concerts on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in July and August. Even Flow are the second and last SMS-amenable band scheduled in the series for 2026, and hopefully this supergroup delivers a fun evening of grunge and alternative rock hits from the Pearl Jam catalogue for assembled fans tomorrow! Summer Concert series shows are all FREE & ALL AGES, and they run from 7:00-9:00 PM.

9&10 News is calling for sunny skies tomorrow evening with temperatures in the 20-21° range, which sounds perfectly agreeable, so visit the above links for more on Rob, Steve, Cameron, Mike, and Derek's big downtown concert, and here they are in a recent jam session!

Finally today, I have moved local midwest emo/post-hardcore trio Fuller to our inactive band links. The reunited band has not issued a public update since their headlining Stage 2 slot at Rotaryfest last year, though remember that bassist Mark Rand (who missed that concert) and drummer David Peredun both live out of town nowadays. After their successful 2002-2005 local run, Fuller surprised many by reuniting for a December 2023 concert at LopLops Lounge, later confirming plans to record their Mark-era original material in studio, with their full length album "II" released to major digital platforms in March of last year. To date, the album isn't on CD or vinyl, but their Rotaryfest set was a fitting culmination of their reunion era, Mark's absence aside. While my music tastes lie heavier, it was neat seeing a staple of my early local concert-going years back at it, and hopefully frontman Jamie Vincent revisits Fuller in some form when the time is right, as they were a welcomed attraction!

The 2 Stoned Crows In The River Concert Preview, New Videos, And More!!

Before I kick off this post, I wanted to apologize for two missed concerts for coverage on the SMS in this busy month. The most recent is an apparent gig by local punk/alternative cover sextet BookcluB at Peace Restaurant at 250 Queen Street East this past Friday, a show implied to be on their outdoor patio based on the Facebook "Stories" promoting it (the only way the band even acknowledged it on social media; Peace never said a thing). The possibility exists that this was a private event, but if it was public, I do apologize, but I can't cover something that no one announces in a permanently sharable way! The other show was a bonus Mike Case Memorial Stage concert for Tym Morrison, who played outside of The Trading Post on Friday, July 10th, as per this Facebook event page separate from his every-Wednesday summer concert arrangement there.

Alas, this would be easy to miss given that the only distinguishing characteristic of the event page compared to his batch one for the Wednesday shows is the date, especially as a Friday show is far more amenable for concert-goers, but the event page went up with less than 3 hours to go before showtime, so it was extremely late notice anyway. Was he a last minute fill-in for someone else? Still, I do apologize, but Tym will be back there on Wednesday! Now, here's one more weekend concert preview to cap off this beyond stacked run on the SMS and some new videos from both sides of the border as we start playing catch-up!

In the last show of this final full concert weekend of July 2026, an all-local concert named "2 Stoned Crows In The River" goes down TONIGHT at Blaster Powerhouse! Promoted by Underground Events SSM, this show is so named because of two bands each with "Stone" and "River" in their names, with a "Crows" reference for good measure. In presented band order on the Facebook event page, tonight's bands (all relatively newer ones to the local scene) include indie/southern rock quartet Eli Russell & The River Fools, alt-hard rock band Riverside Stasis (in their final gig with outgoing rhythm guitarist Liam Dinsmore), "diamond rock" quartet/Doo & The Boyos spinoff Stones At The Alter, and blues/hard rock trio Stones & Crows. Not a bad lineup of rising local talent, and in many cases, familiar faces in new projects! Of course, props to Anthony Boudreau (a.k.a. Tony Stone) for drumming with both Stones & Crows and Riverside Stasis tonight too.

This is an all ages show as usual for the former Soo Blaster, it has a projected 7:00-10:00 PM runtime (just as well on a work/school night), and admission is a flat $15 at the door with no advance tickets. Whether you saw The River Fools and Stones & Crows at Rotaryfest Stage 2 last week or not, there's a lot to like from this mix of bands tonight, and while Eli's new band isn't as hard rock leaning as their fellow performers, don't bypass their talented original sound either! We'll close today with new videos, and we'll start with the first public video (that I am aware of) from yesterday's ARCH Run outside of Jay's Piston Broke Pub, specifically of local hard rock quartet 5 Dollar Bribe's closing set! This was uploaded to drummer Chase Chapman's mom Jodi's Facebook page before being shared publically to the band's Facebook page, and sees them covering Marcy Playground's "Sex & Candy". I don't think this song suits Jayce's vocal range, especially with how low the original's are, but it's well covered overall! Bands again played on a flatbed trailer, and a tent was put up there as well, but I believe they mostly dodged rain despite cloudy overcast skies all day. Alas, while the video was shot in horizontal landscape mode, it was uploaded into vertical letterboxed dimensions, making it tiny, and I'll never understand how that keeps happening. Finally, here's a new video from Sault Michigan punk/hard rock duo About:Blank's Facebook page from two weeks ago! Remember, Jon appears to have been just a guest bassist in their video from last month. This video sees Parker and Kade playing a new original song named "Pollution", which notably starts off with a 30 second clip where Parker expresses his frustration with pollution and they agree to write (and immediately perform) a song on the idea. A surf punk-inspired number that has a "Crocodile Rock"-ish vocal melody at points, it's a fun song, but this clearly isn't an ideal setup in terms of capturing the audio, as the guitar is extremely muffled. Not badly performed all the same, so give it a watch below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Maddy's Mighty Mutts Family Fun Day), A Concert Preview, And More!!

Our Rotaryfest review is in the latter stretches now, but with a Wednesday concert to preview, a big LOCAL CONCERT ALERT to touch on in two weeks, and a very busy bunch of weekend concert previews ahead, let's get another news post up today, so here's what you should know! 

An intriguing mix of local musicians will join forces for a special charity concert at The Roberta Bondar Pavilion on Wednesday, August 5th! This is called a Family Fun Day (not to be confused with the Loud & Proud one for Pridefest), and is being organized by Maddy's Mighty Mutts, a dog rescue business that you may recognize from doing events with dogs up for adoption at The Dive Gastro Pub. To help support the work that Maddy's does, the Family Fun Day will also have a beer/cocktail tent, a barbecue, kids activities, and vendors, so be sure to follow the above links for full non-musical details! 11 local music acts have donated their time to perform at this event (which takes place from 2:00-10:00 PM), including five local bands, so who can you expect? In alphabetical order on the AI-generated poster, the bands include newer young hard rock quartet 5 Dollar Bribe, southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225, ...

...Josh & Todd from The Golden Scoundrels in an acoustic folk/country set as "Half Scoundies", acoustic classic/hard rock cover duo TNT (Terry Eaton n' Travis Sharpe from Soundcheck), and country cover veterans Tex Riviera & The Ride (or if you believe the AI poster, "Tex & The Relix"). The rest of the bill will be comprised of solo acoustic musicians, including Bone Yard 225 frontman Greg Simpson in his solo "Ranting Rockstar" guise (with a guest appearance by the aforementioned Travis Sharpe), Arin Karki (a.k.a. Arin Jung), Dodge This/ex-Phatstick singer/guitarist Jason Taillefer (mind the missing "i" on the poster), local country musician Jazmine Ladouceur, former Haggith/Project 421 frontman Curtis McKenzie, and country singer/guitarist Leslie Cook. That's quite a stacked lineup, including a lot of names who you don't see on multi-band bills that often!

Maddy's Mighty Mutts' Family Fun Day takes place on Wednesday the 5th from 2:00-10:00 PM, it is absolutely all ages, and I haven't seen anything concrete about admission fees or a lack thereof. This looks like a fun event for a great cause, but I do wonder how they landed on a Wednesday for the date for this, as a lot of people work days/9 to 5 during the week (to that end, a performer schedule would be handy). While not "short notice", this is just two weeks away, so visit the above links for more on what to expect under the big tent for this intriguing charity concert!

Next up, here's a mid-week concert preview before we dive into the full weekend previews proper, as prolific local acoustic classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will continue his weekly summer arrangement at The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post TONIGHT! This is day #4 of this current run of outdoor concerts beside the Big Moose Ice Cream Parlor, and hopefully there's a decent crowd there for his unplugged rock covers and other favourites, as recently usual! As usual for this year's run of Trading Post gigs, tonight's festivities take place from 6:30-8:30 PM with no age limit or cover charge. Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for 17° temperatures and sunny skies, so nicer than last week, but cooler, especially for late July. In case you're wondering, the air quality index has not been higher than a 5 (moderate risk) since Saturday night, and the forecast maximum for today is a 3 (low risk).

I suspect we made it out of the worst of the air quality warnings from the forest fires, but things are recent enough where it seemed worth bringing up at least one more time (famous last words). Visit the official Facebook event page on Tym's show tonight at The Trading Post, and here he is live!

Finally, here's three more assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• The aforementioned Bone Yard 225 have announced that their fourth studio single "Welcome To The Shit Show" will be released to major streaming services on Friday, August 1st! In the meantime, you can hear a sample of the song on their website. No word on how progress on the complete debut album is going, but it will be neat to hear the new song from your local 225 next week!
• As noted above, advertising for the Maddy's Mighty Mutts family fun day notes that Bone Yard's Greg "The Ranting Rockstar" Simpson will be featuring Travis Sharpe in his set. How much, we don't yet know, but Travis made an unadvertised guest appearance with Greg when he played at The Dive Gastro Pub last month, which the venue's Facebook page captured in this 40 seconds-long video of the two covering Guns N' Roses' "Used To Love Her". I wish this was the full song, but it's a solid performance with Travis making use of his deeper clean vocals well! Unfortunately, I can't embed the video here, as The Dive background matched the audio in the clip as their own.
• Grand Rapids, Michigan death metal quartet Life Sentence have been added to the Viscera-headlined Pizza Hut concert in Sault Ste. Marie on September 26th, as per updates to the poster on the band's Instagram page. Very grindcore-inspired sound here that Blood Shed Productions fans on the Ontario side may want to check out, and it will be interesting to hear how a band this extreme goes over in Sault Michigan in two months' time!

Bone Yard 225 Updates & A Tym Morrison Concert Preview!!

For our first post of what will be a busy work week at the SMS, here's a pre-Rotaryfest mid-week preview and the latest updates from a prominent veteran band both here and abroad!

We'll start with a mid-week concert preview before the Rotaryfest crush begins, as prolific local classic/hard rock musician Tym Morrison will return to The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post for his third weekly concert there of his current summer arrangement TOMORROW EVENING! While not a Rotaryfest performer on record (odd that he's never played to my knowledge), this could be an appetizer for fans of rock covers to see some live music outdoors before the action begins downtown, and hopefully Tym has a solid block of rock favourites in store for fans way up Great Northern Road! Like the last two weeks, tomorrow's show is expected to run from 6:30-8:30 PM with no age limits or cover charges. Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for cloudy skies and temperatures hovering around 21°, so similar to last week, but with no likelihood of rain. Next up, let's take a look at the latest updates from local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225, so what's new from their camp? When we last saw them on a local stage, they performed not one, but two concerts in one day (one "uncorked", one fully electric) at Beck's Bar for the Biker Rights Organization's annual Shoot & Scoot on Saturday, June 27th, and a live-streamed video from the former set made its way to their Facebook page, though note that it was not playing for me on a desktop browser (it worked fine on a cell phone though). The video sees the guys covering The Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See" (with an amusing "Drift Away" interlude late), and the video notably does not feature bassist Warren Reville. No idea if he was absent for all/part of the acoustic block or just sat out this song, but with him not there, this video is effectively a Bearded Lounge reunion. It's a solid unplu... sorry, uncorked rendition while it lasts, and familiar for long-time fans!

Despite being shot vertically, Greg & Alex are steadily captured in frame, which is nice! Due to Facebook's current regulations for live-streamed videos, the "Can't You See" cover will vanish from Bone Yard's Facebook page in around two weeks unless re-uploaded or converted, so click here to watch it while you can! More of singer/drummer Greg Simpson's "ranting rockstar" videos from his personal Facebook page were shared in the following days, including this one the next day where he reflected on the "huge success" of their double booking the previous day, including a full house for the nightcap. July will see your local 225 exclusively play private or out of town events, starting with a Canada Day gig in Chapleau (3½ hours north of here) on July 1st, as teased in this "ranting rockstar" video, and this one where Greg shows off their hotel rooms for the night. They called it "a fantastic show for a fantastic crowd", so it's good to see that the trip went well!

"The Dirty Three" played their next gig 50 minutes southeast of here in Johnson Township (outside of Desbarats) on Saturday, July 4th, which was a private event at the Caribou Log Cabin Resorts there, hence why we didn't cover it on the SMS. Greg even apologized for the lack of media in this video, saying that "certain private parties should stay private", but things went well! For a second straight year, Bone Yard packed their things to play in Greg's hometown of Kirkland Lake (7½ hours northeast of here!) this past Saturday, once again headlining the Stéphane Léveillé Memorial Poker Run motorcycle rally, a.k.a. the Leave No One Behind Ride for Veterans. Before heading home, Greg did another radio interview with CJKL 101.5 there (as per this "Ranting Rockstar" video), but as best as I can tell, the band has not posted that for on-demand streaming like they did last year. There is a video from the Kirkland Lake concert to check out though, so what's to see?

Sadly live-streamed (so you likely have until around August 11th to watch it), this comes from the Facebook page of the Royal Canadian Legion there, which is where the show took place this year and last. This sees Greg, Alex, and Warren covering The 4 Non Blondes' "What's Up?", which remains a mystifying cover choice for me, regardless of which rock band does it (I know it has been funny and a crowd pleaser, but the joke got old for me years and years ago). Well performed in spite of that, let alone the vertical camera angle, so give it a look below while you can! Bone Yard 225's next public show (aside from a private stag & doe set in two weeks) will be at Beck's on August 1st, and they are not playing Rotaryfest again this year.

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tarnished & Separate Wayz) And Most Of This Weekend's Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

It's the (relative) calm before the storm that is Rotaryfest weekend next week, as this weekend's slate of hard rock concert previews is much quieter by comparison! Still too many shows for one post, so Saturday's previously announced Quite Frankly concert will be in tomorrow's post. Here's what you should know to kick off this weekend, including LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, some on SHORT NOTICE, and an apology for a missed concert last week!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Separate Wayz (and/or their sister band Soundcheck) will return to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, Separate Wayz first announced these shows via their Facebook page yesterday. Now, Jay's Facebook page has an AI generated poster crediting the shows to Soundcheck, a contradictory plug that I have surprisingly never seen since Soundcheck relaunched with a 75% identical lineup. I'm inclined to believe Separate Wayz' own promotion, but at the same time, could Soundcheck singer/guitarist Travis Sharpe be on hand too for another "epic crossover" weekend, or even just a smaller guest spot? Be at Jay's TOMORROW and/or SATURDAY NIGHT to find out! If truly Separate Wayz-led gigs, these will be their first since rocking Reggie's last month, and their first standalone bookings at Jay's this year.

Hopefully there's a solid crowd TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Both shows are at 9:30 PM with no cover and 19+ age limits, and if this is of note, Jay's now serves Slush Puppies! Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's just the second public video from Separate Wayz' Facebook page (at least it's not a "Story"!). This 13 seconds-long clip appears to come from their Reggie's show on June 13th, and features Travis on guitar despite those gigs not being advertised as "epic crossover" dates. He, Nicole, Terry, Jim, and Johnny were filmed here covering Alanis Morissette's "Hand In My Pocket", and what we hear sounds good, but look for much longer full performances from Separate Wayz (and Soundcheck?) this weekend!

Next up, let's head across the border to St. Ignace, Michigan, where Sault Ste. Marie classic/hard rock cover quartet Tarnished will return to Kingston Kitchen on SATURDAY NIGHT, with two more Saturday nighters booked there on August 15th and September 19th! Again, apologies for the short notice on SATURDAY's concert, it was only announced on the venue's Facebook page on Monday. As you may recall, Tarnished debuted at the 250 South State Street Jamaican restaurant last year during the Richard Crane Memorial Truck Show weekend in St. Ignace, and while unsaid in Kingston Kitchen's promotion, that appears to be the raison d'etre for the September 2026 booking. THIS SATURDAY'S and next month's shows appear to be just standard concerts, and clearly Tarnished's Kingston Kitchen debut went well last year for them to come back thrice this year! Remember, there's more going on in St. Ignace than just the casino, as Tarnished have proved umpteen times lately.

In two more new confirmations, Tarnished will end the summer with shows at The Back Bay Grill & Games Lakeside Lounge at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in Brimley on Friday, August 28th & Saturday, August 29th, so if you want some hard rock action a little closer to the Soo at our other regional casino, keep these shows in mind! They were announced via this batch Facebook event page for all Lakeside Lounge concerts for the next two months. All five dates (THIS SATURDAY at Kingston Kitchen included) are at 8:00 PM with 21+ age limits and no cover charges. Now back to Sault Ontario briefly for a show that had lots of advance notice, as local acoustic classic/hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will play his third show in the past week TONIGHT at The Dive Gastro Pub! Fresh off of his second Mike Case Memorial Stage show of the year yesterday (I believe the rain held off too), this is the third and last show (so far) for Tym at The Dive, as per his batch Facebook event page for shows there. While The Dive has hosted Thursday acts on their outdoor patio on occasion (including Old Roads last week), their AI generated poster confirms that tonight's "Think It Over Thursday" concert will be indoors in "The Naughty Corner". While we're on the subject, I wanted to apologize for missing a show of Tym's last week, as he debuted at Ije's Place in nearby Desbarats this past Friday, in a solo concert that he never publically corroborated on social media, just on his personal account.

While Desbarats (40 minutes southeast of the Soo) only typically comes up on the SMS when referencing CASS, it is good to see a venue there hosting live music on occasion, though I do wish Tym would have said something about that gig, as I'd have happily plugged it had I known about it. Apologies again regardless! Tonight's Dive show (despite Tym's event page listing it as a matinee) takes place at 9:00 PM with a 19+ age limit and no cover. We'll close this post by looking at more touring rock band action in Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, but unlike the three bands debuting at Kewadin Casinos in the coming weeks, the band playing TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin is quite familiar, namely Traverse City classic metal trio Peril! While not newly promoted on the band's Facebook page, this weekend's shows are confirmed on their summer calendar seen here, and mark their first EUP shows since rocking the St. Ignace branch two weeks ago. Jeff and crew (whether in Peril or their sister band Scarkazm) are not advertised to return to either Kewadin branch, so unless you go see them at the Music In The Park series in St. Ignace, these are your last chances to rock out with either band north of the Mackinac Bridge this summer, so hopefully they have lots of fun covers in store!
