LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Inconsistent Me) And More Recent News & Notes!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Firehouse frontman C.J. Snare, who passed away due to cardiac arrest on Saturday at the age of 64. Visit your preferred music and/or news outlets for more details (here is Rolling Stone's coverage) but he had previously been battling cancer and abdominal issues. Local hair metal fans will recognize C.J. as the long-time frontman of the South Carolina glam metal/hard rock band dating back to his joining Firehouse in 1987. They peaked in the early 1990s with commercial hit singles like "Don't Treat Me Bad", "Love Of A Lifetime", and "When I Look Into Your Eyes", and got a Billboard Top 40 single as late as 1995. Firehouse played in the Twin Saults multiple times, most recently when they opened for Dokken at what's now GFL Memorial Gardens in September 2017, while they opened for Bret Michaels and Skid Row at Kewadin Casino in Sault Michigan in 2014 & 2009 respectively.

While never a headlining attraction in their local gigs in the past 15 years (the cancelled Moloney's Alley show in 2016 acknowledged), Firehouse delivered the goods for Hair Scare diehards in their Sault Ste. Marie sets, and C.J. was a talented singer who could handle hard rockers and ballads with ease. What I have heard about him as a person is positive, and hopefully fans can look back on his work with Firehouse to remember him in the best ways at this difficult time. R.I.P., C.J.!

Now, today's post features some recent news and notes, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as Detroit pop punk solo project Inconsistent Me will make their local concert debut on Sunday, June 23rd at The Distraction! The second Michigan-based punk solo project to make their way to the East Street venue this year (though they have performed with backing musicians in some videos), Inconsistent Me deliver a fun and up-tempo brand of pop punk that should find a receptive audience this summer, so definitely give Brendan's work a listen to see what they'll bring to the table north of the border! Local punk trio Vanity First will open in their first announced concert following their album release next weekend, and they should pair well sonically in a few months, so don't be late for their set! This is an all ages event with doors opening at 6:00 PM, and admission is $10 or "pay what you can". See above for more details!

Next up, we haven't written about local industrial metal solo project Molten Imp on here since last year, so what have they been up to lately? As it turns out, the project took down their Facebook page for unannounced reasons late last year and replaced it with a new Facebook page in December, albeit one set up as a normal user account that you have to add as a friend to follow (not unlike what Double Down have). Project leader Boyd "Unterbiss Von Wigwaus" Rendell has kept things relatively cryptic in updates there since, but he revealed that new music would be released in "the first quarter of 2024", but that could take until the fall given the pace he was working at. In February, Boyd indicated that he was working on new music, and teased a possible virtual single release like in their early run, but again, updates tend to be cryptic, often just about writing/creating music as a whole without being directly tied to Molten Imp.

It's good to see that Molten Imp are still working behind the scenes, even if the wait for new released music continues into 2024's second quarter! I do apologize for the delay in writing about Molten Imp on the site, the cryptic posts don't have a lot to latch onto when earmarking topics for upcoming SMS posts and they have always been easy to fall through the cracks, but hopefully Boyd's doing well and that we hear much more from him in the near future! If I did/said something wrong, I do apologize!

We'll close today with new videos from local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard 225, and while I usually share new videos in conjunction with weekend concert previews for convenience in promoting tradtional shows, I'll buck that today because these are from their Thursday jam night hosting duties at Reggie's Place last week! In a rare TikTok-exclusive video from Bone Yard, they shared this video of Alex and Warren being joined by four guest jammers (including a saxophonist!) to play a blues song that I couldn't identify. Is it called "Waiting"? Shockingly, the video is horizontal, but for one reason or another, it was put in monochrome & with some sort of visual filter, and it only captures 44 seconds of the performance. I've never had luck embedding TikTok videos on the SMS, but click here to check it out, as it has a good groove! Embedded below is a video from Reggie's Facebook page on Thursday, so what can you see here?

The video sees Greg and Alex joined by guest singer/keyboardist Joey Damasco for a cover of Bryan Adams' "Summer Of '69", and while I'm no fan of Bryan Adams, this is a lively cover that relatively seamlessly incorporates keys! Joey's vocals are not super rangy but they work for this song, and while the video was shot vertically, at least the filmer captured everyone in frame. Check it out below, and remember to join (or even replace?) Bone Yard 225 at their next jam night at Reggie's this Thursday!

Firehouse Concert Video Showcase (Part 3!!)

It took almost 5½ years, but here is our third all-video post from the Dokken/Firehouse concert at GFL Memorial Gardens (then known as the Essar Centre) in September 2017! The reason this show is back on our radar is because promoters Superior Entertainment recently launched a new Facebook page and have been posting media from their concerts there, primarily from this show. The only concert videos uploaded there so far come from this event, and none were previously featured on the SMS, at least not via a link that works in 2023. I'm not sure if the new Superior Entertainment page is part of a planned relaunch for the Sault Michigan-based concert/MMA promoters or just a way to (re-)post old event materials, but note that their newest post is a gag poll asking what artist that inactive(?) local hard rock band Bucksaw should cover next. If Bucksaw have reunited, this is the only post that I have seen to confirm it so far, but I'll let you know if anything else is said.

None of the videos on Superior Entertainment's Facebook page (all unlabelled) come from Dokken's set, but co-headlining South Carolina hair metal quartet Firehouse's set was captured in two videos, including a 29 second clip of them playing "All She Wrote" and, as embedded below, a 1:41 clip of them playing the second half of their power ballad "Love Of A Lifetime", albeit filmed sideways from the 5 second mark onward. Why upload it based on the original orientation, I don't know, but the two videos sound good for fans, and Firehouse were good to the Sault area in the early-mid 2010s, so give these a watch above & below!

The other three live videos on the channel come from Los Angeles/Saskatoon arena rock quartet Love 'N Revenge's opening set, though two videos are just 13 seconds long and I can't identify the song performed in one of them (the other is a cover of Rockarma's "Bring It"). Embedded below is their cover of Skid Row's "Youth Gone Wild", and props to frontman Damon Kelly for sounding admirably like Sebastian Bach here! This clip runs for barely over one minute, but like the "All She Wrote" video, you get a good look at the stage from the vantage point of this stationary camera, and the band's on point, so check these out above & below as well!

Finally for the new/old videos is a re-post of a promotional clip for this concert featuring the members of Firehouse (except frontman C.J. Snare) that was first posted onto Superior Entertainment's now deleted Facebook page on September 29th, 2017, the day before the concert took place. Kewadin Casino concert-goers in particular won't be too surprised by touring bands plugging their show here like this, but this was notable as Firehouse had already arrived in town, so check it out (again) below!

As of this writing, the Superior Entertainment Facebook page otherwise features photos of event posters and the events proper, be they from Dreammakers Theater hard rock concerts or MMA cards, so do check everything out at this link, especially if this is setting the stage for a return to booking live events in 2023. Another Dokken/Firehouse Concert Video Showcase!!

Today's post is devoted to more videos from last month's Dokken-headlined concert at The Essar Center in Sault Ontario from two different sources, and we'll start the remainder of videos from Christopher Paci's YouTube channel! We originally featured his Love 'N Revenge videos in our first Dokken concert fallout post on Monday, in order to ensure that all three bands were covered there, but he did film the other two bands, despite a 3 day delay for videos from Dokken's set for one reason or another. Chris made the wait worth it though, with seven videos of the Los Angeles hair metal band being uploaded earlier this week, and they include their songs "In My Dreams", "Maddest Hatter", "Dream Warriors", "Breaking the Chains", "Into The Fire", "Don't Close Your Eyes", and as embedded below, "Alone Again".

Filmed from the front row or very close to it, Chris has a great angle with nice audio quality, but after hearing these, I agree that Don's voice isn't what it used to be. He can still carry a tune though, particularly on slower songs, and fans helped on the bigger hits! Give Chris' Dokken videos a look above and below, and kudos to Chris for all of his hard work!



Next up, Chris did film eight songs across six videos from South Carolina hard rock quartet Firehouse's preceding set, and they include "Don't Treat Me Bad", "Reach For The Sky", "When I Look Into Your Eyes", "Rock on the Radio", both "Shake & Tumble" & "All She Wrote", and as embedded below, both "Overnight Sensation" & "Love of a Lifetime". It's clear that Chris had some freedom to move on the floor, as certain Firehouse videos are much further from the stage than others, but this one is from a similar angle as his Dokken clips. Firehouse continue to retain their classic sound with visible energy, so fans will like these clips above & below also!



Today's remaining videos come from promoters Superior Entertainment's Facebook page from the days surrounding the concert, and while short and only focused on Firehouse, it's nice to see some more video footage! This clip is of 30 seconds from the end of "Shake & Tumble" and beginning of "All She Wrote", so it's nothing that we haven't already seen from Chris Paci, but the audio sounds pretty good, and the camera is mounted at a good angle, so check it out below!



Finally, this 17 second clip of the members of Firehouse (sans frontman C.J. Snare) went online the day before the concert, and it just serves as a pre-show commercial. Nice to get some direct hype, especially considering that they were already here in the Soo when it was shot, so give it a belated look below, and apologies for missing it at the time!

Dokken/FireHouse Concert Video Showcase!!

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian readers! Today's post is our long-delayed fallout post from the Dokken-headlined concert at The Essar Center back on September 30th, so what what all went down over a week ago? Well, SooToday's Donna Hopper was on hand for the show, covering it in this article from the following day, where she noted that assembled fans enjoyed the concert, despite a low attendance of only around 800 fans. Hey, it's better than the Jackyl concert got nine years ago, if that counts! The article features some interview remarks from attendees, including some disappointment at the turnout, while Donna did get 22 photos from the event, including 8 of the headliners, 7 of Firehouse, 3 of Love 'N Revenge, and four of fans, and they're of predictably great quality, so give them a look above! This wasn't all for online local news coverage of the show, as Sault Online columnist Ernest Skinner covered a different side of things for his post-concert article, so what should you know about that?

In a nutshell, the article is about Ernest picking up Firehouse in Sault Michigan to bring them across the border for the concert and interviewing them en route, before focusing on the concert proper and happenings pre- and post-show, such as the afterparty hosted by Gliss Steak & Seafood, and talking with Don Dokken himself the next morning. Very cool of Ernest to not only get this kind of inside access with the hair metal legends, but to also share this in-depth story online, so definitely check out his article for a different side of a major local concert like this! In terms of videos, there are surprisingly none of Dokken yet that are publically viewable on YouTube or Facebook at press time... but there is one on Instagram! Uploaded to the Instagram page of local progressive metal band Kraken Mara (more on that in the coming days), this is of Dokken playing their classic song "Into The Fire" that night! The guys don't sound bad from what we hear, though the full song wasn't filmed.

As for Don's singing voice, he sounds fine here, but I am aware that some social media posts noted that his voice wasn't as strong as it used to be. Whether that's factoring into the lack of public videos or not is up for debate, but note that Ernest said that he sounded great in his Sault Online article. Good central angle and solid audio, so give this one a look below!

Kraken Mara also uploaded a video to Instagram of openers Firehouse playing their song "All She Wrote" at a similar upper-backdrop-heavy angle, and they sound pretty good too, and about on par from from the Kewadin Casino videos of theirs that I've seen! Familiar song with energy, so fans will be happy with this one, even incomplete, so check it out below too! Note that one more video is up on Kraken Mara's page, but it's a pre-set video with Guns N' Roses' "You Could Be Mine' over the P.A., and no live bands playing at that point, but watch for a surprise walk-by cameo.

Finally for this first fallout post, I wanted to acknowledge opening act Love 'N Revenge, who I've also only seen videos from via one source, namely Christopher Paci's excellent YouTube channel! Yes, Chris was at this concert, but he curiously didn't film Dokken's set (that, or his videos are very delayed), and we'll absolutely touch on his Firehouse videos in an upcoming post. His Love N' Revenge videos feature the Los Angeles arena rock group covering frontman Damon Kelly's old band Rockarma's songs "That's All" and "Bring It", but embedded below is their own original song "It's Rock 'N Roll". Though a relatively new and unfamiliar band compared to who played later that night, Love 'N Revenge's sound was a great fit, with their own originals meshing well with the Rockarma holdovers, and their sound has a good high energy that would fit well on The Hair Scare! Give Chris' solid videos a look above and below, and stay tuned for Chris' Firehouse clips!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison) & This Weekend's Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

(Updated on Saturday at 12:31 AM) A quiet but eventful weekend of concerts is upon us to help end the month of September, and with no currently known short notice gigs, let's get right into what's going down for hard rock fans, starting with a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!

Former Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has his usual solo acoustic gigs at Gliss Steak & Seafood TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and SATURDAY, but Tym will also return to The Barrelhouse Wine & Whiskey on Queen Street East THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Profuse apologies for the short notice on the Barrelhouse show (this post was edited on Saturday to add it), as it was only announced via it's official Facebook event page on Friday night. Now four weeks into a run where Tym plays a nighttime gig alongside his ongoing long-term Gliss arrangement, keep all four of this weekend's shows in mind for some entertaining hard rock covers, be you taking in the Gliss matinees or SATURDAY NIGHT's return to the popular downtown tapas restaurant for a second straight week! Yes, we'll touch on Tym's expected October gigs next week, we won't forget about them!

While there are no cover charges, mind the restaurant locale of these four shows, with the Gliss gigs being 6:00 PM events with no age limit, and SATURDAY'S Barrelhouse show being 19+ at 10:30 PM. Visit the Facebook event pages linked here & here for more details, and here's Tym live!



Next up, we'll head to The Canadian Nightclub, where local alternative hard rock trio The Din and fellow alt/punk trio Handsome Sandwich will join forces for their own concert TOMORROW NIGHT! After some earlier public uncertainty about this show's status, The Din have since verified that it's still on, meaning that their third-to-last concert (and last outside of LopLops) before their upcoming disbandment is on, so don't miss out on this one before it's too late! Material from their forthcoming second and final CD will be played along with older classics in what The Din are promising will be "a special night", so keep that in mind too! As for Handsome Sandwich, this will be their first live concert since the Oh!No Festival in Leeburn earlier this month, and first in Sault Ste. Marie since July's Vaultry show at The Canadian. This unique band has been quiet on Facebook since that event, but hopefully they deliver a fun set to kick off tomorrow's festivities!

No cover charge is announced for this 19+ concert, which has a 9:30 PM start time.  With The Din's time as an active band winding down, tomorrow's show is even more notable than it otherwise would be, so don't miss out, especially if you can't see them at LopLops next month! In a quick detour to the Eastern Upper Peninsula, we'll next look at the return of Traverse City, Michigan metal trio Scarkazm to our area, as they'll be rocking The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Continuing a recent regular run of shows up north (having played St. Ignace and/or the Soo's Kewadin monthly since July), the Peril sister band should be in fine form for another high impact weekend of covers and perhaps originals, so don't miss Dave, Adam, and Jeff at the St. Ignace Kewadin tomorrow and/or Saturday! If you can't make this weekend's shows, Scarkazm will back in Sault Michigan in three weeks, and in St. Ignace in December. As usual for Scarkazm's gigs in our neck of the woods, expect 9:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 21+ age limits this weekend. Finally for this weekend, a rare metal concert at The Essar Center will take place THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, as Los Angeles hair metal legends Dokken will make their long awaited return to our area! Almost 12 years removed from their set opening for Quiet Riot in Sault Michigan, fans will surely be rockin' with Dokken all night as they play hits like "Alone Again" & "Burning Like A Flame", so don't bypass this one if you're a hair metal fanatic! This will also be Dokken's first local gig with current bassist Chris McCarvill, having changed bassists thrice since their 2005 show here. North Carolina glam rockers FireHouse will join them in their third local concert set and first since 2014's Bret Michaels show in Sault Michigan, so look for more entertaining classics like "When I Look Into Your Eyes" & "Don't Treat Me Bad" in their first gig on the Canadian side of the border! Los Angeles melodic arena rock quartet Love 'N Revenge (fronted by Rockarma's Damon Kelly) will open in their local debut, who should pair well with the headliners!

A rare cross-border event courtesy of Sault Michigan concert/MMA promoters Superior Entertainment (of 2015's P.O.D. & Saving Abel shows), floor seats from the fifth row and back are still available for this all ages concert at 7:00 PM on Saturday, and tickets cost $62.15 (minus online service fees) at this link, at the in-person box office, or by phone at 1-866-775-9422. This should be a fun concert for hair metal lovers, and remember, if this show's a hit, it will encourage more major touring acts to play at The Essar Center in the future! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Dokken), New Project 421 Videos, And Much More!!

We're back on this Monday evening witha  new news post, so what will you find within? Some assorted recent updates, new videos from a recent concert, and leading off, a huge LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for this fall, so here's what you should know!

Platinum selling Los Angeles hair metal legends Dokken will return to the Sault Ste. Marie area for the first time in almost 12 years when they headline at The Essar Center on Saturday, September 30th! Last seen locally when they opened for Quiet Riot at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino in October 2005, Dokken should have a set full of hard rocking hits like "Breaking the Chains" & "Dream Warriors" in store when they rock the downtown arena this fall! This will also be Dokken's first regional stop with Chris McCarvill on bass (Barry Sparks was their bassist in 2005.) Joining them are North Carolina glam rockers FireHouse in their third local concert appearance, last seen opening for Bret Michaels in Sault Michigan in early 2014, with last year's Superior Music Festival being cancelled in the interim. With hits like "Don't Treat Me Bad" & "Love of a Lifetime" still in their repertoire, this will be a great way to welcome Firehouse back to the Soo, so don't miss them either!

Opening this show are Los Angeles melodic arena rock quartet Love 'N Revenge, a newer project from former Rockarma frontman Damon Kelly, and they should provide a nice compliment to kick off the night! As announced this morning on SooToday, The Sault Star, and Rock 101, tickets go on sale THIS FRIDAY for $55 (minus taxes and service charges) at this link, at the in-person box office, or by phone at 1-866-775-9422. Showtime is 7:00 PM, and this is an ALL AGES event. This should be an exciting show for Hair Scare loyalists, and remember, if this show is a hit, it'll encourage The Essar Center to bring in more hard rock shows! Next up, here's lots of video footage from the return of Project 421 at The Canadian Nightclub on Saturday night! As posted to their Facebook page yesterday, the local classic metal quartet brought their original and cover onslaught back after a nine month stage hiatus, and their whole hour-long set was filmed on a stationary camera, so what songs can you hear within? In order, we have Iron Maiden's "Running Free", Alice Cooper's "No More Mr. Nice Guy", Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?", Saxon's "Denim & Leather", Judas Priest's "Metal Gods", their original "No One Rides For Free", Iron Maiden's "Powerslave", Black Sabbath's "After Forever", their original "Into The Darkness", Metallica's "The Four Horsemen", and Iron Maiden's "The Trooper", so how's that for a nostalgia mindtrip (plus two originals)? The video quality isn't optimal, given that fans on the floor get in the way of the camera, which sadly wasn't zoomed in either, but the audio's fine!

You have to really crank it, especially if you're relying on laptop speakers, but the guys sound vibrant and energetic, and Blair Burch handles lead vocals fine and with conviction, though higher register songs like "The Trooper" fared worse. Of course, the Diamond Head cover is ever prescient given that 421 are opening for that band in September (details here), and it's great to see Project 421 back in advance of that highly anticipated concert, so give their full set from Saturday night a listen below!



Project 421 also shared two videos from a much closer filmer on the floor on their page yesterday including "Am I Evil?" again, and as embedded below, both "No One Rides For Free" and "Powerslave". The audio is louder, but not as clear, so keep that in mind when watching, but the visuals are much better, and you can see Blair, Frank, Daniel, and Chris back in action just as if you were on the floor that night! Give these videos a look above & below too!



Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

• Local alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback have been named as openers for THIS THURSDAY NIGHT'S Treble Charger return concert at LopLops Lounge, as per their Facebook page yesterday! Though not yet advertised on the Facebook event page for the sold out concert, their addition makes sense, given their recent work & advisement with guitarist Bill Priddle. Now publically confirmed as a "sneak peek" and kick-off show for Treble Charger's upcoming tour run, check the above links for more on this highly anticipated event!
• Local alt-hard rock trio The Din revealed the setlist from their portion of the aforementioned Project 421 show on their Facebook page on Saturday, confirming there that the 9 song set was almost entirely based around songs from their planned second CD! Three of the songs are newly confirmed titles to the online record, including "Weekend Delivery", "Missing", and "In The Moonlight", though I can't confirm yet on if one of those was the untitled new song from their demo vocal track videos. Hopefully the nearly-all-new set went well for The Din this weekend!
• After an almost 6 month hiatus from updating their Facebook page, local hard rock quintet Skeyes of Seven posted there on July 1st, but finally had a new update regarding the band proper on Thursday, noting that "the writing process has begun" and they can't wait for us to hear the material in question. Are they recording new songs, or perhaps re-recording their unreleased debut EP, or is something else afoot? Stay tuned for updates as they roll in!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (1971), Din & Gnaeus Updates, And More!!

Before we begin this post, we have a big Sault Michigan concert cancellation to note on here, as tomorrow's outdoor FireHouse concert on Ashmun Street has been cancelled, as per promoters Superior Entertainment's Facebook page this morning. They cited slow ticket sales as the reason, noting that "unfortunately, this is a risk business driven by sales", which is definitely disappointing, especially given the hype and promotion behind it! Hopefully we see FireHouse, Redburn, and a Sault Michigan battle of the bands again in the future! Now, we have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, big updates from a rising band, and more from Sault Ontario, so let's get rolling!

Yet another new show from Six, Two, Oh. will hit The New American Pub on August 14th (one week from Sunday!), as Winnipeg post-punk/"sad dad rock" outfit 1971 will make their local concert debut that night! Playing an often dark yet accessible blend of genres that should appeal to punk and indie fans alike, 1971 should leave a good impression at The New A next weekend, so be sure to give them a listen! Though another out of town band is playing on the 14th, local indie punk quintet Northwest are the highest slotted openers that night, and they should deliver a solid show like they have a done at The New A opening for Lost Love earlier in the year! Thunder Bay "desert rock" quintet The Franquilizers will open the proceedings in their own local debut next weekend, and their grittty & psychedelic punk originals should give the show a nice kick, so don't miss them in their opening set! This 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time, as has recently been usual.

Note that this show also joins one more new Six, Two, Oh. show at The New A, which is headlined by Vancouver alt-country band Skeeter & The Deets on September 7th, but if Tuesday's Debutaunt show teaches us anything, it's that anyone could open, so we'll let you know if the openers enter our range! As for the 1971 concert, it should be a good time for fans of punk sub-genres, so check out those bands above in advance of the 14th!

Next up, here's the latest from local alternative hard rock trio The Din, starting with another great local news media spotlight in this in-depth Sault Star article by Jeffery Ougler on Wednesday, which heavily outlines the band's history, recording process, ambitions, and even personal lives! It mostly covers known ground, just with much greater biographical detail and lots of interview clips with the band, while in terms of scoops, the article confirms that their new album's producer Daniel Schmidt is guitarist Tammy Hill's father (and a veteran local drummer himself), and Tammy noted the apparent reasons for the demise of her old band Leaked. Though the article incorrectly notes that frontman Mike Haggith fronted his old band Haggith (he was the drummer there), give the whole article a look above or in The Sault Star paper itself, as it really tells The Din's story really well and in great detail! Stay tuned for much more from The Din in the coming days, and don't miss their CD release show next week!

Also today, here's a short new video find from last month's Rotaryfest Stage 2, courtesy of their Facebook page! It's a 13 second clip of post-punk quartet Gnaeus playing their song "Circles" at the outdoor Clergue Park locale, and while it's not a lengthy (or close) look at Gnaeus, it's nice to find more footage of them live! A new video of indie rockers K.I.C.K.'s headlining set is also online to check out too via Rotaryfest's Facebook page, albeit longer and from a sharper angle of the stage, but it's similar quality otherwise. • The Castle-headlined concert on Wednesday, September 28th has been relocated from The New American Pub to 180 Projects on Gore Street, as per promoters on the Facebook event page earlier this week. A reason for the relocation wasn't announced, but it's likely for scheduling conflicts, as Six, Two, Oh. are still holding a number of shows at The New A in the coming months. Last seen hosting April 2015's Biipiigwan show from the same promoters, it'll be nice to see a new show at 180 Projects, so see above for more details!
• In a late clarification from June 4th's Redneck Rock Bash II concert at The Rednecks Saloon, the show saw a late contraction from five acts to three, as local punk trio Redundant and indie solo artist Shit Creek Survivor both did not show up for the event, as per Project 421 guitarist Blair Burch in a recent personal conversation. Reasons for their withdrawals were never publically stated, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and hopefully the show went well either way!
• Local goregrind duo Rotopsy have quietly been added as a late fourth act to the Debutaunt concert at The New American THIS TUESDAY, as per the Facebook event page in recent days. They join an eclectic lineup featuring an out of town pop punk headliner, plus opening sets by a rapper and stand up comedian, so there's a little something for everyone on the lineup now!

FireHouse & Ripcordz Concert Updates, New Din Videos, And More!!

August is already upon us, so let's keep things rolling with a new news post on this Monday morning! Today, we have some assorted recent notes, new video features from a talented rising band, and lineup shifts for an upcoming show, but first, here's some late major updates for what could be the biggest Sault Michigan-area show of 2016!

We have lots of big updates concerning THIS SATURDAY'S FireHouse-headlined outdoor concert in Sault Michigan, so what's new to report on it? In terms of location, the show has indeed been moved from behind Moloney's Alley to a proper street party locale on Ashmun Street, specifically the stretch between Harmony Health Foods and Zim's between West Portage Avenue and Maple/Ridge Street. Both listed establishments will act as sponsors and contributors for the show as well, with Zim's providing refreshments during the festivities, and hosting an autograph signing & afterparty inside their bar on Saturday at 10:00 PM. No word of if live hard rock bands will return to Zim's in the process, but it's great to see them going all out for the occasion! As for the lineup, Rochester post-hardcore band Lights Out Paris have quietly dropped out for unannounced reasons (for what it's worth, the band hasn't posted on Facebook since May), but the teased battle of the bands is on for this Saturday!

To take place at 3:00 PM as the opening sets for this ALL AGES show, promoters Superior Entertainment have yet to confirm the performing lineup or prizes at all, but might we see past local battle winners Tantrym Tyme back for it, especially given drummer Ethan Twardy's ties to Harmony Health Foods? If/when we hear anything on the battle lineup, we'll let you know, but visit the official Facebook event page for full details on this intriguing show! Updates have been slow to come for this event, but everything seems to be falling into place for the returns of FireHouse and Redburn, so get your tickets for $25 (less for children) at this link A.S.A.P.!

Next up, and staying in the realm of concert lineup updates, the full lineup for the Ripcordz-headlined all ages show on Saturday, August 13th at The Canadian Nightclub is now out, as Sault Ontario classic metal band Project 421 & their sister hard rock group Eclipse will return to the site of their most recent battles of the bands next weekend! Though neither skew to the hardcore punk stylings of The Ripcordz, both bands are very talented, and should set the tone well before Jack Spades and the headliners rock the stage! It should be noted that Project 421 (who were added to the lineup first) are a replacement for local hardcore punk quintet Destroilet, who have quietly withdrew from this concert for unannounced reasons, though note that they haven't played live since (ironically) The Ripcordz' local show last October, due to varying personal matters. Hopefully we see the guys back at it soon, but see above for more on next week's ALL AGES Ripcordz show!

Also today, here's some new features on local alternative hard rock trio The Din from two prominent local news video sources! One is the newest episode of SooToday's music webseries Tuned with Donna Hopper, as posted online yesterday, so what should you know on it? Filmed at Rotaryfest's Stage 2 last month (where The Din opened the day's lineup), Donna interviewed all three band members about their formation, musical evolution, upcoming debut CD and release concert, their songwriting process, and frontman Mike Haggith's extensive solo discography, with clips from their set interspersed within as usual. In terms of scoops, the Tuned episode does give some extra info on Pretoria Hill Productions (where their CD was largely recorded), while drummer Brandan Glew did note that they hope to work with Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios again on future projects. Solid episode that covers a lot of ground, so give it a look at the above links!

As SooToday's video host doesn't allow external embedding, we can't feature it here, but this one is embedded below, courtesy of Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie's YouTube channel on Friday! Filmed at a jam session with interview segments in their van (Id Iota's Christian Lemay conducted it but isn't heard on camera), it treads some of the same ground as the Tuned episode, but it features extra insights on why they dropped "Mike Haggith &" from their name, the band's fast rise, The Din's efforts to involve the crowd in their sets, and their social media presence. Another solid feature that touches on their personalities well, so give it a look below too, especially if you missed it on channel 10 last month!

• In case you haven't noticed lately, Facebook has unveiled a new streamlined look and design for pages (including ours), which includes easier tab access and more of a vertical layout. It takes some adjusting, but it seems to address some problems with the earlier layout, so just a heads up on the update, which you can get more info on at this link! It wasn't my call, other Facebook pages should look the same on your computer!
• Local post-punk quartet Gnaeus were spotlighted in this SooToday article from Donna Hopper on Saturday, where they discussed how they began working on their debut CD "Meditations" (out THIS FRIDAY) and their songwriting process, while also noting the spots where you can buy it, including one surprise spot: M&M Food Market, as bassist Matt Fronzi's parents own the frozen food shop chain's local branches, so if you buy groceries there, add "Meditations" to your shopping list! Solid read, so check it out above, along with 7 black & white photos from their LopLops show on July 22nd! Sadly, none of Long Shot's set are included.
• This is probably late to the party, but I thought I'd acknowledge it. Local musician Kyle Derasp is looking for people to jam with at his place, which has a full set-up with drums. He has "beers & beats" every weekend, and requests those interested to not ask him to bring his drum kit to you. If you're interested in jamming with Kyle, message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from last month!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Rudyard Music Festival), A New Local Metal Band, And More From Sault Michigan!!

Here's a second post on this Tuesday, and it's 100% devoted to bands and events in the Sault Michigan area! We haven't had one of these in a long while, and it's good to spotlight the Eastern Upper Peninsula in full for a change, but also give this month's YouTube Channel Profile a look below too! Today, we have notes from former local radio mainstays, big updates regarding a major upcoming show, and a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next month, but first, here's a new addition to our band links!

We have a new local metal band to add to our Sault Michigan band links, and they are the Bay Mills metal quartet Stoned Ape Evolution! Details are scant on this band so far, but they first came onto our radar in the spring when members expressed interest in playing in this year's (now cancelled) return of LemmaFest. You may recognize seeing Stoned Ape Evolution at the Bay Mills Bands Together fundraiser event in May, and the band says on their new Facebook page that they are working to "bring a taste of a bigger metal band to a smaller area". Notably wearing masks on stage, their lineup is (intentionally?) not listed on Facebook, but personal Facebook pages confirm that 2 members are John Napoletano and Melvin Willis, neither of which I'm familiar with from other recent local bands. Stoned Ape Evolution have yet to share media of them in action, but given their visuals and descriptions, comparisons to the older masked local metal band Clownsack are easy to make.

I've been intrigued by Stoned Ape Evolution since we first heard about them during the preliminary LemmaFest V discussion, and they seem to be making some headway locally in terms of playing at big multi-band events! A non-cover, extreme metal band that actually plays live isn't something we've readily seen in the E.U.P. as of late, but hopefully Stoned Ape Evolution can help fill that gap! With that said, when can we see them live next?

...During the first annual Rudyard Music Festival, which takes place at the Rudyard Township Park on Saturday, August 20th! Organized by local classic rock cover band Steelhead (formerly Ricochet), this ALL AGES event will see at least 12 music acts playing at the park, which may seem like an atypical setting, but remember that Steelhead frontman Alex Schrovenwever played at the "Music in the Park" series here when he was a member of Banned. Currently confirmed bands joining Steelhead include the aforementioned Stoned Ape Evolution & local hard rock/blues quartet Project 906, as well as Traverse City's New Jazz Trio, plus the online pageless bands The North Country Band, Dondee Lanes regulars Second Offense, The Gaskins, and The Wednesday Night Headliners (if we get more info on them, we'll let you know!) Solo performances are also planned by the aforementioned Alex Schrovenwever, Crossroads member Dennis Verrett, Hayley Malaska, Bob & Robert Malaski, and Jimmy Williams, with more acts apparently to be announced.

Campers are welcome to attend this family event at 18725 South Mackinac Trail, with food (including a pig roast), kids activities, and free camping welcome for what Steelhead are hoping becomes an annual event. While there's no admission fees announced, a start time isn't clear yet, but 12:00 PM would be a good guess. While there are a lot of unknowns regarding the lineup, this sounds like a fun event, and it may help lessen the blow of losing LemmaFest for a second straight year! Also today, here's some updates regarding the FireHouse concert in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, August 6th, so what's new on this event? Firstly, the show has nothing to do with Moloney's Alley (the bar), but is scheduled to take place in the actual alley behind the venue of the same name, though the city may move the show to the corner of Ashmun Street & Portage Avenue, which promoters Superior Entertainment actually prefer. Nothing's 100% final though, but we'll keep you posted! As for the local openers, promoters have decided to hold a battle of the bands within this concert, with a cash prize awaiting the fan-voted winner, which would definitely be interesting to see! The full lineup has yet to be announced, but as of July 6th, one or two bands were still being sought. If you're interested in competing and/or opening for FireHouse, message Superior Entertainment at this link or Harmony Health Foods owner Steve Twardy at this link, and visit the official Facebook event page for more on this huge outdoor show!

Finally, here's a note that doesn't bear directly on the Soo anymore, but I thought it was worth addressing. According to various news releases like this one on radio & broadcasting websites, Northern Star Broadcasting (who owned 6 radio stations in the Sault Michigan/Newberry market between 1995 & 2010) have sold all but one of their current stations in Northern Michigan for $1,950,000 to the Black Diamond Broadcast Group, with the remaining station (WCKC in Cadillac) being sold to Up North Radio. According to Northern Star president Del Reynolds on this post on the Michigan Radio & TV Buzzboard forum in May, the reason for the sales stem from his wife Mary (Northern Star's vice president) going through health issues that are making it hard for her to keep up the pace of running the company. Northern Star Broadcasting may be best known locally for owning stations like the former 97.9 Classic Rock: The Bear, 99.5 Yes FM, and Country 105 during their run in this region, while Del had previously co-owned Yes FM briefly in the mid-1980s as well.

The Cheboygan & Indian River stations in the sale (including Rock 105, 97.7 Classic Rock: The Bear, and the two Big Country stations) get good to fringe reception in the E.U.P., and will still be available to hear for fans of those stations that can pick them up. Del and Mary have a long history in radio in Northern Michigan, and while it's sad to see them exit radio station ownership, hopefully Black Diamond can keep the tunes pumping for years to come with their new & old signals!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (FireHouse, Havadder, and Tym Morrison), And Canada Day Concert Previews!!

For our last post of the month of June 2016, we're tackling concert previews for this Canada Day weekend largely, including SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, but we also have additional shows for later this month from one act playing this weekend, and enough details on a big August show to call it for our listings, so here's what you should know!

With a new month drawing near, we'll add Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison's July slate of acoustic solo concerts at Gliss Steak & Seafood to our concert listings, starting with shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY! Apologies for the short notice on this weekend's gigs, we were waiting for public confirmation of the July dates in his ongoing weekly arrangement with Gliss, which came via this weekend's Facebook event page. As usual when approaching this long-term run of shows, we've added Tym's presumed remaining July shows as well, so look for him at The Quality Inn's house restaurant as well on July 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th, and 24th & 25th for three more full weekends of unplugged classics! Next up, local classic/hard rock cover trio Havadder will return to The Rockstar Bar for one night only THIS SATURDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced the show via the official Facebook event page yesterday. Seen less frequently this year than we have in the past, this will be Jason, Travis, and Scott's first concert in about a month, and just their fourth of the year, all at The Rockstar Bar. Of course we've seen 2/3rds of Havadder recently with The 3 Day Millionaires, but if you miss Havadder's blend of classic and hard rock covers, be at The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY! Note that this is a one nighter due to a previously announced Canada Day concert tomorrow by country rock cover band The Ride (formerly The Border City Band), whose current lineup notably features ex-Havadder drummer T.J. Case. Admission for SATURDAY is likely free, there is a 10:30 PM start time in effect, and you must be 19 to attend. See above for more details, and here's Havadder live!



Before we round out this weekend's previews, here's one more new concert announcement, as we now have fuller details regarding Superior Entertainment's previously announced FireHouse concert on Saturday, August 6th in Sault Michigan, so where is it being held? Outdoors, behind Moloney's Alley, the Irish pub at 227 West Portage Avenue, which is just seconds down the road from The Satisfied Frog. Moloney's Alley isn't a frequent sight for hard rock concerts in the area, but it's great of them to host this huge outdoor show! In the event of rain, promoters will apparently "work with Kewadin (Casino) as a back up venue", even though The Dreammaker's Theater has a British Legends tribute show that night, but details would be fleshed out if need be. As for the lineup, North Carolina glam metal veterans FireHouse will of course headline in their third local concert appearance, while Saginaw rap rock band Redburn and Rochester, New York post-hardcore band Lights Out Paris will also return to the Soo as featured acts.

The show will apparently be an all-day event starting at 12:00 PM and ending at 8:00 PM, and "many more acts" are to be announced, so we'll let you know when they're confirmed! This Downtown Days event (which isn't being advertised as a sequel to last summer's Superior Festival) will be ALL AGES, and tickets are now available online at this link for $25, while children 14 and under can get in for $15, and babies 2 years and under will get free admission, though I can't confirm if you can get tickets at Moloney's Alley or not. It's great to see a huge summer concert event in Sault Michigan, in what has otherwise been a quiet stretch, so see above, click here, and stay tuned for continued details on this huge show!

Finally for today's previews, here's the biggest show of the Canada Day weekend in Sault Ontario, as Abbotsford, B.C. power pop/punk quartet Hedley will headline at The Yard at 75 Huron Street for a huge outdoor show TOMORROW NIGHT in the first half of the venue's Canada Day Kicker! This will be Hedley's first local concert appearance since headlining at The Essar Center in the fall of 2010, and with hits like "She's So Sorry", "Crazy For You", and "On My Own" in their repertoire, the Juno Award winners' diverse and fan friendly hits should attract a huge audience tomorrow! All-female Toronto indie rock quartet The Beaches are joining them on tour as openers with their poppy and skilled originals, while local/Toronto Celtic punk quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide will play their first local concert of 2016 to kick things off, and it'll be great to see them back on a local stage! For what it's worth, Dustin's personal Facebook posts for the show have tagged Mikey Hawdon in them, who is the band's most recent permanent drummer, but hasn't played with the band in their recent shows.

Nothing has been publically confirmed otherwise regarding who'll be behind the kit tomorrow, but be there to find out! Notably the first concert of any kind since The Tech bought The Yard from the Mill Square developers, this half of the Canada Day Kicker will be complimented by Saturday's Kira Isabella show, which should be entertaining for country & pop fans! This ALL AGES event has gates opening at 6:00 PM, with tickets going for $59.89, plus extra VIP & dual show passes from $82,49 & up, so click here to get yours online! Hedley are a huge attraction for pop and punk fans, and this should be a big hit, so see above for more details, and here they are live in the Soo!

A Defunct Punk Band Discovery, An Upcoming Sault Michigan Concert, And Much More!!

We're back with what could be our last non-concert preview/CD review post of the month, so what's on tap for this Tuesday morning? Lots of shorter assorted recent updates, and preliminary details for what could be the biggest Sault Michigan concert of the summer, but first, here's a surprise find for local punk fans from over a decade ago!

We have a newly discovered (albeit long defunct) local punk band to add to our inactive band links, and they are Why! Active from at least 2003-2004, Why may be best known as an early band from
Northwest frontman Wayne Watkins, who played bass alongside singer/guitarist Cory Coulter (ex-Outspoken/The Fallout) and drummer Dave Cote (a.k.a. "Dirty Dave Sanchez"), while Cory's former bandmate Chris Nielsen was a later addition on guitar. Forming circa December 2003, Why's debut concert appearance was at the Bon Soo Battle of the Bands at Club Princess in February 2004, where they didn't place, but Cory did apparently win a Best Individual Musician award. I can't find substantial information on the band's post-battle activities beyond Chris' addition, but their Angelfire page features photos from the battle, biographies, song lyrics, and some juvenile humour that might not be to everyone's taste

Dave's YouTube channel uploaded three concert videos from the Bon Soo Battle in December 2007, likely the original source of the defunct mp3 links from Why's page, and they include their originals "Break From the Madness", "Tchike Davis", and as embedded below, "Isolation". Why weren't as polished as Wayne's later bands, but they had a fun punk sound with hardcore tinges, and very good enthusiasm to boot, so if they played more beyond this battle, I'm sure they were crowd favourites! Given their name though, it's hard to find info on them. Give Why a look above & below!



Next up, Sault Michigan MMA/concert promoters Superior Entertainment are back with their first announced music event since last August's Superior Festival, and while specific details are forthcoming, organizers are bringing North Carolina glam metal quartet FireHouse back to the Soo on Saturday, August 6th! Quietly announced via Superior Entertainment's Facebook page on June 11th, we learned a bit more via the video below (posted early this morning to Facebook) where the members of FireHouse confirmed the show will take place as part of Sault Michigan's annual Downtown Days. A planned stop on FireHouse's 25th anniversary tour (with hits like "Love of a Lifetime" & "When I Look Into Your Eyes" sure to be in tow), this would be FireHouse's first concert here since opening for Bret Michaels at the Sault's Kewadin Casino in January 2014, and third total in the area, but first as a headlining act. As of this writing, organizers have yet to confirm a venue, ticket pricing, or age limit.

With that said, the early August scheduling could point to it being a sequel event to the Superior Festival (which was held on short notice at The Savoy Bar & Nightclub after a relocation and rescheduling from Aune-Osborne Park, for what it's worth.) In any event, this is not being held at The Dreammaker's Theater, as Kewadin Casino has a British Legends tribute show there on August 6th, continuing their run of tribute bands this year in place of 1980s hard rock (hopefully they're not gone for good!) • Last week's Go Skateboarding Day festivities were filmed and spotlighted in this SooToday video from this past Wednesday, where interviewer Jasmyn Rowley chats with (among others) co-organizer/Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce about the event at large, skateboarding culture, and more! Jack Spades are briefly shown performing as well, though they're muted behind existing background audio. Solid press for the event, which looks bigger & better than last year, so give it a look above (we can't embed it here) and read SooToday's full article at this link!
• Local indie rock outfit Great Chamberlain have launched a petition on Change.org to attempt to gain support towards being added as a late local opener for Hedley at The Yard on FRIDAY! According to drummer Keeghan Rosso (recently of The Pixo Control) on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group, the band needs 300 signatures to be added to the bill, as per their agreement with event management. As of this writing, Great Chamberlain have 152 votes on the petition, so if you want to help them get on this huge pop/punk show, see the above links for full details!
• A local singer named Greg McLeod is looking to jam with local musicians to "see where things may go." He cites alternative and classic rock among his influences, naming bands like Collective Soul, The Foo Fighters, and 3 Doors Down among favourites of his. I'm not familiar with Greg from past local bands, but if you're interested in jamming with him, message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from last week!
• The long-teased Iskra-headlined concert from Blood Shed Productions on Tuesday, August 2nd has quietly been cancelled, as per the recent deletion of it's Facebook event page. A reason for the cancellation wasn't announced, but the show never had a confirmed venue, despite having a full advertised lineup and hopes to book it at The New American Pub. Disappointing, but if you want to see Iskra, remember that they'll still be headlining at The Oddfellows Hall via Six, Two, Oh. on July 14th, so click here for details on that event!
• The second song from local hard rock quartet Long Shot's forthcoming debut EP is now on their Bandcamp page! Entitled "The Beat", I believe this is one of Long Shot's more recent original songs, and like before, we'll hold full comment until our likely review of this EP. Check out "The Beat" above!
• In their newest Facebook page update from Saturday, local pop punk quartet Stereo North revealed that they're "taking a little break" due to guitarist Matthew Anich being on paternity leave (congratulations to him!) However, the other three guys are staying busy in other projects, including planned solo acoustic work from frontman Andrew Pucci, while Bill Bennett & Brett Norton are apparently jamming with "some other local bands". The band didn't elaborate on these projects, or give any indication about when Stereo North's break may end, but fans will surely anticipate whatever comes next!

Bret Michaels/FireHouse Video Showcase!!

As previously hinted at, we are dedicating some time (a whole post, in fact) to fallout from Saturday night's Bret Michaels/FireHouse concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino! Given the popularity of Bret's local concerts from regional hair metal fans (this was at least his fifth since 2005), one had to assume we'd get a lot of videos from it, and there are a healthy amount now on YouTube, so let's kick off this showcase of what you saw or missed at Kewadin the other night!

Seven videos from Saturday night come from YouTube user Christopher Paci's channel, joining numerous other videos from recent Kewadin & Canadian Nightclub shows, including four from Bret Michaels' set! Uploaded yesterday, all of his Bret videos are of Poison covers rather than newer solo originals, and they include "Talk Dirty To Me", "Something To Believe In", "Every Rose Has It's Thorn", and (as embedded below) "Nothin' But A Good Time", so click each link to check them out! Chris' angle is roughly central to the stage, if shaky & not especially close (with no zooming again), but there's a nice clear view of Bret and his band, and attendee heads & arms aren't generally a major issue. Everyone sounds good, and Bret doesn't sound much different from Poison's heyday, and he still has a solid command of the crowd! Fans may be curious to see Bret's tease of bringing Poison themselves to the Sault this summer through the video below, which would be interesting for sure if it happened! Chris' other three clips from this concert are of openers FireHouse, as he captured the North Carolina glam rock standouts playing their songs "When I Look Into Your Eyes", "Rock On The Radio", and (as embedded below) "Shake & Tumble", so click each link to see these videos! The video quality's no different, but we get a nice look at FireHouse in action, who still have the same energy and sound that fans remember from their peak! If you missed them since their last time in the Soo in 2009, check out their videos above and below, and stay tuned for one more from their set at the end of this post!



Next up, I know of one other Bret Michaels video from Saturday night, as YouTube user Chad Carter uploaded this video of Bret covering Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" at the show to his YouTube channel yesterday. Much closer to the stage, Chad was on the stage's far right, and his video has solid audio quality that fans should appreciate! That said, the video is somewhat muddy looking, and I think there was an auto-stability filter put on it, but it's another solid clip, and you can see Bret's engagement with close fans nicely, so give it a look below!



The last video from the show that I currently know about is of FireHouse playing their song "Love Of A Lifetime", as uploaded by YouTube user shyangel1978 yesterday, and though there's no credits to the Soo in the information, the clothing and stage setup match Chris Paci's videos, so I'm positive it's from Saturday night. More of a ballad this time, this is from a similar angle as Chad's video, but with smoother camera movements and less of a muddy look, but the audio is scratchier than on the other videos from this concert. Nice closer take though, so give this other FireHouse clip a look!
