More New Videos & Related Updates From The EUP, Plus A New Live Video Of The Gambit!!

Here's another news post as we continue staying busy on the SMS this weekend, and it just so happens with our backlog clearout that we have a heavy focus on Sault Michigan and/or the Eastern Upper Peninsula again today. This includes a follow-up to recent coverage from a local battle of the bands and local musicians' involvement in an indie film premiering later this month, but we are capping things off on the Canadian side for a new live performance video. However, we'll start south of the border, so here's what you should know on this Sunday morning!

While featuring the video yesterday of Molly Escherich's Music In The Park set at last month's Superior Whitefish Festival, I realized that a video from last year's battle of the bands at this Brimley-based festival was also uploaded to her YouTube channel! While the Dafter-based teenage singer/guitarist led The 8th Fire to second place in year #2 of this battle, and she led Molly & The Other Guys to victory at 2024's Lake Superior State University Battle of the Bands (more on this year's soon), the two battle runs bookended an off day for Molly as a local battle competitor. Molly & The Other Guys were revived with a mostly new lineup for 2025's inaugural Superior Whitefish Festival battle, but with five competing acts (four guaranteed prizes), Molly & crew surprisingly finished in last place. Possibly because of this, the video is now unlisted on YouTube, but it was publically shared to her Facebook page at the time. 

For this set, Molly was joined by returning Other Guy Nathan Webber (ex-Tarnished/Exit 808) on guitar, alongside bassist Destini Smith (who guested with Tarnished at the previous year's LSSU Battle) and Molly's brother Cayd on drums. Cayd was a very late replacement for About:Blank drummer Kade DesArmo (what are the odds on the similar first names?), stepping in that same day for his first ever appearance as a drummer in a live concert. Things started with a full band version of Molly's original song "Cheap Cologne", before Molly put down her guitar for a cover of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's "Old Time Rock & Roll". and then picked up a tambourine to cover Paramore's "Hard Times". This was actually the entire set, and as Molly explained on her Facebook page at the time, they wanted "to give the band some stage time" despite the lack of rehearsal and the drummer change, so the set was heavily pared down from the expected 45 minute runtime.

The 10 minute length will likely explain the lack of a podium finish last year, but I did notice timing issues during the set, and to me, they picked two covers that would have suited having a second guitarist present (Molly or otherwise). Still, they did perform well and likely would have won cash had they played a full set! This would end up being the swan song for any version of The Other Guys, with The 8th Fire becoming Molly's new full-band concern last month, let alone her heading to Interlochen last fall, but she has a bright future ahead, and Nathan, Destini, and Cayd are talented musicians too, so give Molly & The Other Guys' 2025 battle set a watch below!

Next up, let's stay in the EUP by heading north to Sault Ste. Marie for... the premiere screening of an indie horror movie? On Saturday, August 22nd, Lake Superior State's Arts Center will host the premiere of Yooper Frankenstein, a locally-filmed and produced horror movie by local filmmaker Dave Cairns that was shot here from mid-2024. The movie will be screened twice that evening at 7:00 & 9:00 PM, and the movie will definitely be R rated for violence, adult content, coarse language, and disturbing scenes (it is a horror movie, after all!). Teasers from the shoot have been shared to the movie's Facebook group and across multiple YouTube videos, one embedded below, but why is this relevant to SMS coverage? Well, look at who is soundtracking the movie, namely Viscera frontman "Blind" Bob Quinn, X's & Y's/ex-Life's Eclipse guitarist Jason Mills, and ex-Half Stupid/Plastic frontman (and former Crooked Music owner) Zac Crook!

Blind Bob also has a small acting role in the film proper, and Zac is the film's music director. Zac and Jason have shared songs from the film to YouTube, and while what they have shared so far is atmospheric and feels inspired by 1980s horror classics, there will be some level of metal music, as heard in the teaser below from YouTube user gothicsoldier (listen to those drums!). A locally made horror movie in Sault Michigan is sure intriguing, and they've certainly put the work in over the past two years, but will this be horror's answer to Escanaba In Da Moonlight? See above and below for more on Yooper Frankenstein and the premiere in two weeks! 

We'll close this post with a rare live video from veteran Sault Ontario punk supergroup The Gambit's Facebook page! As you may recall, they played their first public concert set since Rotaryfest Stage 2 in 2024 on August 1st when they opened for 5 Dollar Bribe on an all-local bill at Blaster Powerhouse. This was just their fourth show period since changing their name from The Sick Sons in 2022, and given their stacked lineup and original material, it's a shame that they don't play more often. This video captures the last 2 minutes of what I believe to be a new original song named "Searching For A Signal" (if it's a cover, I don't know the original at all), and while the audio levels are too loud and staticy as filmed, it's an upbeat punk rocker that fits in line with members' past bands! Good stuff, and hopefully we're not waiting until 2028 for The Gambit's next gig, so give their new video a watch below!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Lake Superior State University Battle Of The Bands II)!!

Apologies for this being so delayed to first make the SMS, but the second annual Lake Superior State University battle of the bands will take place on Thursday, October 17th! Around eleven months after the Sault Michigan university's Arts Centre hosted six acts at their inaugural community battle of the bands, things are even bigger for next week's encore edition, with eight acts hitting the stage for unspecified prizes, so who all is playing this year? Only two of last year's performers are returning under the same names, including classic metal/hard rock band Tarnished and local folk musician Kevin Blakeney, neither of which made the podium last year. Obviously, Tarnished will look different this year (with Chris Leask and Ron Suchey currently playing bass and drums), while Kevin hinted on his personal Facebook page when promoting the 2024 battle that "this year, I'm going to go heavy". We will have to see how that goes!

As you may recall, Tarnished's battle set last year was their first public gig with now-ex bassist Parker Talentino, but he will be back this year with a solo set. Parker's own music leans more to acoustic folk/alternative, so a definite leap from what Tarnished play, but it'll be interesting to see how he goes over, especially as a solo musician in a battle of the bands! Of course, that's not disqualifying for an event like this, as seen last year when young Dafter singer/guitarist Molly Escherich was edged out for first place by three fan votes, and she will be back to make another run at the top prize, but not solo! Molly had teased plans to get a band together a few months back, and she confirmed last month that she will be fronting Molly & The Other Guys at the battle, so who are "the other guys"?  Molly was seen jamming with former Tarnished/Double Jack guitarist Nathan Webber and her brother Cayd (on drums) in this "Reel" on her Facebook page.

It seems likely that they'll be her bandmates next week, though no word on a possible bassist. The "Reel" sees them solidly covering Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness", and Molly shows some brutal versatility on that part of the song! I can't embed "Reels" here, but you can watch it above. The other four acts scheduled for the battle of the bands are new to me, one being Kaleb Shannon, a local country/rock singer/songwriter who hasn't posted on his Facebook page since last summer. but has an album ("Light My Darkness") on major streaming services. Kaleb is a talented musician with a very distinct voice, but can he outperform the bands, Parker, and Kevin next week? Of the other three bands, one is named Unsure (possibly The Unsure?), and I can't find anything concrete about them on social media. We'll let you know when we hear something! Also playing is Small Town Society, so who are they?

I can tell you that they're the new rock band from former Stoned Ape Evoluton/Double Jack guitarist Melvin Willis, but tags referencing participation in the battle on Facebook that include him may reflect multiple groups, so I'm not going to jump the gun beyond that. Again, I don't know much on Small Town Society, but we'll keep you posted! The last band is Sonic Dayze, and unlike the other two new bands, they have a Facebook page with lots of content, so I will be talking about them very soon with a proper write-up, as they have a lot more to say that I don't want overshadowed by the battle details. Conspicuous by their absence are defending champions The Sole Aggressors, but I don't know if they declined the chance to compete again or if LSSU has it so winning bands can't come back. Last year's third place band (Double Jack, now known as Exit 808) aren't back either, but only one band remember remains from last year.

I'm unsure on some of the finer details of this year's battle, but last year, the winners were decided by a fan vote, bands had 15 minute sets, and the prizes were $150 for first place and $50 for second. Admission is the same as last year, at $10 for general attendees, $5 for kids 10 and under, and free for current LSSU staff or students with valid ID. It's great to see Lake State trying the battle of the bands again (still waiting on a new Sault Ontario one...), and hopefully any kinks from last year have been ironed out in time for Thursday's encore at their Arts Center! LSSU Battle Of The Bands Rehearsal Videos & More From Sault Michigan!

Before we begin this all-Sault Michigan post, I wanted to apologize for a missed concert in our previews last month, as local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906 took a trip to nearby Brimley on Saturday, November 11th to headline the 12th annual Veteran's Day ATV ride at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9023. The guys played at 7:00 PM that evening after the ride proper and dinner for attendees, and while their involvement had advance notice via the Facebook event page, Project 906 only confirmed that they were playing on their Facebook page that Monday, which completely slipped us by last month. I profusely apologize, but hopefully 906 delivered a rocking set that night for a very worthy cause!

Today's post is otherwise devoted to recent videos from Sault Michigan, specifically surrounding two acts from the Lake Superior State University Battle of the Bands, namely runner up Molly Escherich and third place finishers Double Jack! As you may recall, Molly's YouTube channel filmed half of the acts in the battle last month (everyone else besides H.L.T.C. uploaded their sets on their own), but besides the actual performances, Molly's channel also has videos from rehearsals for the main event at LSSU's Arts Center. We already touched on her video of Tarnished's rehearsal when we last previewed a show of theirs, but hers and Double Jack's rehearsals were also filmed, all in the Arts Center with full daytime lighting. Molly's solo rehearsal video saw her cover Slipknot's "Snuff", which she played fourth of five songs on November 16th. Sounds fine to me, and it is interesting seeing the rehearsal process!

The natural lighting from earlier in the day lets us see everything better, even if its not natural to how the battle itself would look, This talented young Dafter product is on her way to big things, so give her solo battle rehearsal video a look for yourselves below!

Next up, remember how Molly joined in for new local hard rock band Double Jack's final two songs, en route to both of their respective podium finishes? Well, both of those songs (Alice In Chains' "Man In The Box" & Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy") were rehearsed by her and the band before showtime, and both were filmed in separate videos! Both are a little more distant from the stage and are from a relatively opposite angle of Molly's solo video, to say nothing about how this full band +1 video is shot vertically, but both songs come across well in these pre-show jams! I've embedded the longer Lit cover below, but do check both out for a different side of the battle!

Going even further back, how's about the first ever full band rehearsals of "My Own Worst Enemy" & "Man In The Box"? Despite coming earlier, these were uploaded to YouTube after the videos shot at LSSU were, and they feature Molly jamming these songs with Double Jack, complete with early versions of Molly's "stage crashing" intro for these two songs. The vertical angle still isn't ideal, and these are definitely rawer than what we got, but you can see how Molly & the guys worked well even this early on! As it's longer and doesn't feature obvious lyric sheets, "Man In The Box" is embedded below, so give these a look also, and stay tuned for more content from Molly's channel soon!

I wanted to preface today's final videos with the above because they are among the last videos we'll apparently get with Double Jack's original lineup. After a near month-long break from their Facebook page, the guys posted on Wednesday to reveal that "things have been cooking over here" but they also plan to announce "a lineup change" in the near future. The attached video (embedded below) features a guitarist playing a Kramer guitar with Eddie Van Halen's unmistakable Frankenstrat pattern. Of course, when it comes to Sault Michigan guitarists, none screams "Van Halen fan who owns EVH gear" more than Rhythm & Brews/ex-Nixxon Dixxon guitarist Chris Hubbard, but this is purely an educated guess on my part until Double Jack say something specific. What we don't know is whether the replaced guitarist is Nathan Webber or Melvin Willis, but for what it's worth, Melvin is one of the Facebook users who liked the video.

Whether this is Chris or not, the new guitarist definitely has the chops in this 20 second guitar solo clip, and if the guitar type/design is a red herring, then good on Double Jack to obscure his face from view. We'll let you know more when Double Jack 100% say who's in and who's out, but give their new guitarist teaser video a watch below!

A Dire Setback Updates, New Chase Wigmore Videos, And More News & Notes!!

Still trying to keep regular updates on the site during the ongoing pandemic, so we have some assorted recent updates, a pair of videos from a prolific solo musician, and leading off, some big updates from a local band with an album nearing it's release. Here's what you should know!

Here's the latest updates from local alt-punk trio A Dire Setback, who still plan to release their self-titled debut album on CDBaby next week, so that's something to look forward to despite the postponement of their CD release concert! SooToday's Chris Belsito interviewed the guys for this article yesterday where they talked about the release show being called off, the new album & it's recording process, how they met and formed the band, their lyrical subject matter (which is often darker than the music may suggest), and how they've developed their presences on the album and on stage. Very informative article that helps explore the A Dire Setback story from the past year or so, and it's well worth reading for fans above! The article also reveals that "A Dire Setback" will be available to stream on Spotify and comparable services, and the guys are planning a short tour and festival dates later this year.

In the meantime, A.D.S. posted on their Facebook page to reveal plans to film live-streamed videos from their jam room, but multi-track equipment availability has slowed that down, and they were looking for advice or gear to borrow to speed things along. However, one video has made it's way there since, albeit an 11 second clip of frontman Chris Nielsen discarding cheap headphones while working in studio. Hey, it's something, so give it a look below if you want, and get more updates above!



Next up, here's a pair of new videos from local experimental/metal musician Chase Wigmore's two active solo projects, starting with his first new performance clip on his eponymous solo project's Facebook page in over a month, where he acoustically plays a new(?) original named "The Ghost of Jane Doe." The video has some blurry ghosting to it, and Chase is awfully close to the camera, but his picking is sound and effective, and his distinctive vocals get as intense as ever, even if this isn't your textbook example of a "ballad." Fans will definitely want to check this out below!



Meanwhile, Chase made a handful of quiet updates last month on his extreme metal solo project Awokest's Facebook page relating to his next album under that name, which he calls "the fourth Awokest full length" despite "Enter The Nightlands" being mostly a compilation & "With Focused Psychosis I Wrote This" not getting released outside of YouTube as of this writing. Apparently, the new release is "halfway done", and the first released song from it is entitled "Human In Theory." Pending a possible review of it (if it goes on sale), I'll hold comment for now, but it is in the vein of the material on Awokest's prior albums. Give it a listen below!



Finally for today, here's three shorter assorted news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or station name:

• The Black Label Society-headlined concert at The Dreammakers Theatre at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 8th, where they, Obituary, and Lord Dying will resume their North American Crusade tour after the last half was postponed due to COVID-19. It's great to see one of the big concerts affected by the coronavirus back on track for later in the year, so visit the official Facebook event page for complete details! Yes, tickets bought for the original date will be accepted.
• I have restored Bridge Heads frontman Curtis McKenzie's solo project to our band links following the quiet reactivation of his Facebook page this month! Curt had actively performed as a solo artist in 2017, often at The Vape Escape, but he took the page down by year's end, coinciding with Eclipse's breakup and the beginning of his 2 year hiatus from live music. It's great to have his solo page back, and while he's now in our inactive band links pending updates to the contrary, he did tease streaming live video content on Twitch in his first post back there.
• This is admittedly old news, but we finally have concrete word that Lake Superior State University stopped broadcasting their campus radio station at WLSO 90.1 FM, as per this FCC filing by then-LSSU president Peter Mitchell to formally relinquish their FM license in November 2017. There was never a public announcement or reason given for ending their 24 year FM run, but I know 90.1 FM originally went dark early that year, and it's presumably much cheaper to just run the station online as an IBS Student Radio Network affiliate, as they have done since late 2016 as Superior Radio. Give it a listen for more eclectic alt-rock music!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Who Made Who, Just Leppard, Tym Morrison, & Tarnished!!)

A quiet weekend of hard rock concerts is in store for the last weekend before Halloween, so to round out this weekend concert preview post, we have some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS to tackle for next month for you tribute band fans! That said, let's start with the previews, which both have very SHORT NOTICE add-on shows to note on here!

Reports of the end of Tym Morrison's Thomson Farms Cider & Winery run are premature, as the prolific local hard rock singer/guitarist will return to the Third Line West mill's on-site Wine Barn for matinee concerts TONIGHT and next Thursday! Apologies for the short notice on TONIGHT's show, Tym only confirmed that his Thomson Farms arrangement was extended via the new gigs' Facebook event page on Sunday. It looks like Thomson Farms either now close for the season in mid-November, or always did and I didn't know, but either way, Tym didn't advertise these last(?) four gigs until this week. These should be a prime chance to see Tym's unplugged hard rock covers at a familiar local establishment once again, so keep TONIGHT and Halloween's gigs in mind! We'll add his November shows here and at Gliss to our concert listings next week. And yes, Tym will continue his long-term arrangement at Gliss Restaurant on Spring Street TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT as well at his regular place and time!

Fans of Tym's skilled and vast setlist should be in good hands as he rocks Gliss this weekend, so don't miss out either! Also, I apologize for missing a late notice venue change for Tym' show this past Saturday, as his Gliss gig apparently did not take place, so he was able to play at Thomson Farms instead for a rare non-Thursday show there. Hopefully that went over well! TONIGHT'S Thomson Farms show is at 5:00 PM, he's at Gliss at 6:00 PM, and these gigs do not have announced age limits or cover charges. Next up, Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished's ongoing "every Thursday" run of matinee gigs at Biggby Coffee will continue TODAY, but that's not all, as they'll be making their Lake Superior State University debut TONIGHT with a full band concert at The Galley in The Cisler Center! Again, apologies for the short notice on the latter event, it was only announced via this Facebook event page on Monday. You don't hear of hard rock bands playing on campus at LSSU very often, let alone in The Galley (a restaurant/lounge), so it will be interesting to hear how this advertised 90 minute set goes TONIGHT! It will also be a chance for fans to see the rarer electric version of Tarnished with drummer Tommy Korcal, which plays less frequently than the 2 man acoustic variant.

These shows do not have advertised cover charges or age limits, with Tarnished's regular unplugged Biggby concert taking place at the new 12:00 PM start time, and their trip to The Galley is at 8:00 PM TONIGHT. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Tarnished live!



Also, here's some more new concert announcements for next month as part of The Canadian Nightclub's wave of live tribute bands this fall, starting with the return of Toronto-based AC/DC tribute band Who Made Who for one night only on Saturday, November 2nd! No, I did not put this concert off on purpose, it really only got two weeks notice online. By far the most familiar AC/DC tribute among local audiences in the 2010s, this will be Who Made Who's first local concert appearance since rocking The Rockstar Bar in April of last year, though they are no strangers to The Canadian, having played there most recently in 2012. It's great to see Who Made Who bring their brand of high voltage rock & roll back to the Soo next month, and hopefully there's a great turnout for their faithful sounding and looking stage show once again! Tickets for this 19+ & 9:00 PM event are $15 in advance at The Canadian Motor Hotel's front desk, or $20 at the door. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details as they roll in!

Finally, the other new tribute band concert at The Canadian Nightclub next month will see Sudbury-based Def Leppard tribute band Just Leppard make their local debut on Saturday, November 9th! Unlike Who Made Who, this band is very new to the live circuit, only having debuted in August, and this is just their second announced concert, if you can believe that. As such, this will be an interesting opportunity to see how Just Leppard compare to the real thing, and luckily, they do have this promotional video if you want to see what they bring to the table. Myself, I'm not a big fan of Def Leppard, but if you're a loyal Hair Scare listener, you'll want to circle this date on your calendar! Identically to Who Made Who's show the previous week (and the CCR tribute concert on November 16th), this is a 19+ concert at 9:00 PM with tickets running for $15 in advance and $20 at the door.) LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (40 Sons), Plus New Videos And Show Updates!!

So how about The Super Bowl? Oh wait, this isn't a sports blog, it's a metal blog! Lots of news and updates to get to today, ranging from videos to show updates to just plain interesting stuff! And we'll start with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!!!

A little over six weeks after they last rocked Sault Ontario, Hamilton's own 40 Sons will be returning to the area for a concert on March 4th! This time, they won't be in Coch's Corner like they were in their last couple of local visits. Nope, when they hit the Sault next month, they'll be invading The Speakeasy at Algoma University! A start time of 8:00 PM is given on their MySpace page. Now The Speakeasy have yet to confirm this show, but bear in mind, they are having some issues that have resulted in the bar's closure since Wednesday, so patience will be a virtue! Once I find out details on ticket prices, age restrictions, any additional bands, and whatever all else, you'll find them here! Great to see 40 Sons back so soon, they're a solid band, check some of their stuff out at this location! I might hit this show, we'll have to see!

Now to a trio of announcements concerning upcoming concerts: One with a new band, one that needs bands, and one that needs a venue. We'll start with the show with a new band, and it's the concert on May 6th featuring Derelict at Foggy Notions! I can now confirm that there will be at least one opener, and it's North Bay experimental metal band Thekillingfield! You may recognize them as one of the opening acts for the April 12th, 2009 Cattle Decapitation concert at The Oddfellows Hall! This is shaping up to be one brutal show that death metal fans won't want to miss, I'll keep you posted on anything else I hear from this show! That includes possible additional bands, but I won't say anything that's not confirmed. You'll see if something new's added! Oh, and check Thekillingfield out on MySpace!

Now to the show that needs bands, and we'll start with a personal admission: I'm not as in tune with Sault Michigan as I'd like to be. I don't have a lot of the connections and sites that I have from the Sault Ontario side of things, so I miss stuff here and there across the river. So when I see something new in Sault Michigan being advertised, I don't hesitate to discuss it. That was the case today when I saw this on one of my breaks: Lake Superior State University are holding a Battle of the Bands next month! It will be March 20th at 6:00 PM, running until midnight! No rules or major details are listed on the poster, like exactly where the battle will be held, fan or band fees, rules, prizes, and so on, but contact info is given for this info! E-mail Jacob Winn at jwinn@lssu.edu or Tracy Merony at tmerony@lssu.edu if you are at all interested in attending or playing this battle! Judging from the LSSU stamp on the right, you have until March 12th to enter. Note that the poster doesn't say it's restricted to only bands with an LSSU student in the lineup, but keep it in the back of your head just in case. If I hear anything more on this battle, I'll be sure to share it, especially if metal bands make it on!

And finally for concert updates, here's something I haven't had in a while: A band looking to play here, but needing a venue! New Brunswick experimental hard rockers Cop Shades are looking for a Northern Ontario stop on their upcoming summer tour with bands to be announced. According to their MySpace page, they're hoping for it to be in Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie on August 8th before heading to Thunder Bay. Seeing as this is The Sault Metal Scene, I'll do my part to help get the word out for a Cop Shades show in the Soo! If you'd like to book or host Cop Shades on August 8th at a local venue, contact them at this location! Unique sound, no guitars and kinda experimental and sludgy, but heavy at the same time! We'll have to see where they'll be heading!

Finally for today, it's video time! A pair of local metal bands have released some new videos, and we'll start with Meatplow! Finally, we have real video of these guys in action, coming from the account of singer/drummer Phil Temporao (a.k.a. Phily S. Tempo from Amethyst!) These are older jam videos, not sure how representative they are of the band today, but if it's any indication, we're in for something special! The clips feature guitarist Dennis Porter and Phil on an electric drumkit (bassist Mike Thiffault isn't present...if the last name's wrong, my apologies!) The first clip is just a random jam of stuff off the top of their heads, and it actually sounds really good considering it's improvised! Phil doesn't have a bad singing voice either, the song has a cool industrial vibe! Maybe it's not James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, but it works! The other clip is their cover of Judas Priest's "Grinder", which I don't think suits their industrial vibe as much, but I really like Phil's vocal range, I'm surprised he could hit that falsetto! Both are good clips, check out the improv jam clip immediately below, or visit Phil's YouTube channel! (The song really kicks in after about 2:30)



Also, we have new video footage of Sykotyk Rampage from the Scotties Tournament of Hearts/Sault College Battle of the Bands! As it turns out, bands received the video footage of their sets afterwards, so guitarist Dirk Becker took the band's video, re-mastered it with effects, and created some unique live clips from the shows! Nice work! He's done two so far, "Called In Dead" and "Drinking on the Weekend", and says he'll make one for "Treating You Bad" soon as well! Nice work, always great to see pro-shot video of any local band! Check out their performance of "Called In Dead" from last Wednesday at The Heartstop Lounge immediately below!
