YouTube Channel Profile Series: Daniel Horton & TheLilSpirit

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles on the SMS! This monthly feature series looks at YouTube channels whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, or punk artists or concerts, in order to spotlight them to current readers and hopefully encourage new hits and subscriptions! This month's random selection was a channel with only two distinct types of videos, so I added another random channel with only one distinct video type to fill things out. Ironically, both of today's selections heavily feature Jack Spades alumni with prolific band histories, so here's what you should know on each channel!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daniel Horton (http://www.youtube.com/paperclipprojectx)

Owner: Jack Spades guitarist Daniel Horton, also known from his past local music work with bands like Eclipse, Haggith, Havadder, Mike Haggith & The Din, Project 421, and Punch, among others

Channel Timeline: Launched on August 20th, 2009; Videos posted in July & August 2012

Channel Summary: While this channel's description correctly says that it has "Videos from HAGGITH", it predates his defunct local grunge/hard rock band's spring 2012 launch. As it currently stands, this channel has three live concert videos and one jam clip from early in Haggith's run. The channel URL's name of "paperclipprojectX" likely came from or inspired the band's also-defunct indie record label/studio Paperclip Productions.

Why You Should Watch: Daniel's channel is definitely worth a watch to see Haggith at their very beginnings as a local band, and it's four videos showcase a promising start for them! However, it's usage as an official channel for the group would be far superceded by Haggith's own YouTube channel not long afterwards, with three of these videos re-uploaded there anyway, two in full. Also, note that Daniel has not visibly used this channel since 2012, and while I believe it did feature videos of his pre-Haggith work at one time, that content is long since deleted.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out

HAGGITH Yesterdays Fustrations live @ Party Bay: Three of Daniel's videos come from a private outdoor gig that Haggith played on Canada Day 2012 in Goulais Mission (a.k.a. "Party Bay".) These uploads capture Haggith's initial lineup, including singer/guitarist Curtis McKenzie, Daniel on guitar, and band namesake Mike Haggith on drums, with no bassist added to the lineup yet. Filmed by attendee Morgan Gardner, these videos include renditions of their early originals "Rage Train""Livin' It On The Run" and "Wanko", and in his most popular video, "Yesterday Frustration". The smooth camera quality and Haggith's raw early aggression are captured well on these videos, though the best was yet to come from them locally! Haggith's own channel would later re-upload these songs (except "Wanko"), while adding a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" from this same function.

I Am Acoustic: Daniel's only other video is an unplugged jam of their original "I Am", location unclear. The dark lighting isn't optimal, and it's odd seeing Haggith play without Mike Haggith, but Curt and Dan put some good emotion and grit into this acoustic performance! A second video from this session would become the first upload on Haggith's own channel in September 2012, where they played "Livin' It On The Run."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TheLilspirit (http://www.youtube.com/thelilspirit)

Owner: YouTube user TheLilspirit, exact identity unclear

Channel Timeline: Launched on July 3rd, 2009; Videos posted on November 21st, 2010

Channel Summary: TheLilspirit's only uploads were of local rock veterans Wishbone covering The Surfaris' "Wipeout" and, as featured here, AC/DC's "TNT" at The Roosevelt Hotel (now Reggie's West) the previous day. This was during prolific local drummer T.J. Case's run with the band, and he is the primary focus here, with frontman Dennis Duguay and their other members not featured at this zoom level. T.J. takes over lead vocals on "TNT" and does a fine job, as fans of his later AC/DC cover work with Mourning Wood may attest, though the backing vocals aren't as effective. Wishbone fans may not like the singular focus, but T.J.'s skill level and versatility speaks for itself! However, this channel has not been visibly updated since 2013, and there are more plentiful sources for Wishbone videos elsewhere, albeit largely with different lineups.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! Our next installment of this series will come on or around September 26th, as our next randomly selected channel will be the YouTube channel of inactive Sault Michigan hard rock band The Karstens! Look for that then, and for more news and notes soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Highway 63), New Video Finds, And More!!

After a two day run of weekend concert previews and battle of the bands updates, let's take a look at other stories from recent days before we dive back into the battle pool, and believe me, there's big news on both to mention shortly! For now, we have some neat video finds, assorted recent notes, and leading off, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for over the holidays, so here's what you need to know!

Newer Sault Michigan classic/hard rock quartet Highway 63 will play their last gigs of the year (barring a New Year's Eve show) when they return to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on Friday, December 26th and Saturday, December 27th! Coming just three weeks after the Sir Charge successors' most recent Soo Kewadin dates, I will note that these shows are not among those listed on Kewadin Casino's entertainment page, but they may be waiting to list the 2015 schedule there before updating it. The Switzers and company should be in good form after a successful late 2014 string of concerts, so if you're up for some post Christmas hard rock action, you know where to be! Our source is the band's Facebook page, which also revealed yesterday that the guys are getting ready to record "our demo for the Petoskey casino", presumably meaning that they're auditioning to play gigs at the Odawa Casino & Resort there.

Sault area cover bands playing in the Lower Peninsula aren't unheard of (Highway 63 bassist Chris Leask has played down there with Power Slug), and it'd be great exposure, so hopefully things work out for the guys on that front! As for their Boxing Day weekend shows in the Soo, there's no announced cover charges, 21+ age limits, and 9:00 PM start times in effect, so check the above links for more details, and stay tuned for more from Highway 63 as we hear it!

Next up, here's some older performance videos that we just recently came across on YouTube, starting with defunct Sault Ontario hard rock cover quartet Sneaky Pete live at The Rockstar Bar! Uploaded to lead guitarist Mario Carlucci's YouTube channel in October, the video itself is undated, but it was likely filmed in 2011 (it's not the same show as the one we filmed at in January 2012, and they didn't play live in other years.) The almost 9 minute long video features Sneaky Pete covering Guns N' Roses' "Mr. Brownstone" before transitioning to Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" to close what was filmed, and the guys sound good here! Mike Oakley's vocal range does come up short at times, but Sneaky Pete had chemistry and a good thing going, and it's s shame that they only played live concerts for less then a year after such a long stretch of preparation. The colours are also badly washed out after post-correction, but kudos to Mario for posting this after 3 years! Give it a look below!, and hopefully the guys turn up in bands again!

Also today, remember how Mourning Wood drummer T.J. Case frequently takes over lead vocals for renditions of AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" during their shows? Well, it turns out that he's been singing AC/DC live long before Mourning Wood were ever a thought, as evidenced by a video posted on YouTube over 4 years ago! Uploaded by user TheLilspirit, this appears to come from his brief run with the veteran local rock band Wishbone, specifically their show at The Roosevelt Hotel (now Reggie's West) on November 20th, 2010. While the Dennis Duguay-fronted band is best known for their original material, they do play the occasional cover, and TheLilspirit filmed 2 at this show, including The Surfaris' instrumental "Wipe Out" and the aforementioned AC/DC cover, though in this case, T.J. and Wishbone did AC/DC's classic "TNT". Both are well performed, and while "TNT" benefits from having two guitarists, the backing vocals are barely audible & aren't as effective.

I'll also note that both videos are definitely centered on T.J. over Wishbone (the songs are credited to T.J. only in the title, and the other Wishbone members aren't in frame), but a reason for the single member focus isn't stated. Maybe the filmer has a personal connection, and/or the videos are intended as a solo showcase? Give Wishbone's "TNT" cover a look below, see more above, and don't miss Mourning Wood at Rednecks TONIGHT!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  •  Local funk/hard rock quartet The Elements have quietly been added to the lineup for the second annual X-Mess acoustic punk show at The Algonquin Pub next week, as per the Facebook event page a few days ago. No word on how their set will adapt to an unplugged setting (especially concerning drums), but it's great to see the guys on board for this seasonal event! Stay tuned for more updates, and the first 11 people in the door on Saturday will get a gift!
  • Redundant frontman/Thrill Junkies bassist Justin Langlois is looking to join another band on bass, saying "I need to play more bass" via a post on the Musicians Wanted Facebook group this past Friday. Justin's talent and resume speaks for itself, but if you're interested in jamming with him, message him above or at this link!
  • Speaking of bassist searches, a new local modern rock/punk band named Stereo North are also looking for a bassist, as per a post on the Musicians Wanted group yesterday by drummer Brett Norton. The band is comprised of experienced members, have a setlist ready with new and old songs, and plan to begin playing live once a bassist is found. If you want to try out for Stereo North, message Brett A.S.A.P. at this link or at the Musicians Wanted group!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more updates over the weekend, especially concerning both of next year's battles of the bands and the acts playing them! Thanks everyone!

Battle Of The Bands Rewind Profile: The Sault Humane Society Battle of the Bands

One year ago today, a battle of the bands returned to Sault Ontario for the first time since May 2010, and in it's honour, we're bringing back our Battle of the Bands Rewind Profiles today to look back on it! As you may remember, we profiled 7 Sault Ontario battles from 2008-2010 last spring in the lead up to the battle in question, and as I promised then, we'd profile later battles a year after they took place so we can flash back to them adequately. What was this battle's background? What was at stake? Who won, and where's everyone now? We'll find out below, and like previous battle profiles, there's little to no personal critiquing and more of a recap/trivia nature to it. Without any further adieu, let's flash back a year ago for our newest Battle of the Bands Rewind Profile! (Updated on April 17th, 2014)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sault Humane Society Battle of the Bands (April 20th, 2012)

Background: After a two year hiatus, a new battle of the bands hit Sault Ontario on April 20th, 2012, as hosted by (and as a fundraiser for) The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society. Held at The Grand Theater (the first there in over 3 years), and with sound provided by the Basswerx Recording Studio, 9 bands competed at the battle, with each playing 15 minute sets for the gathered crowd, with covers permitted. Judges picked the top 3 bands afterwards to receive prizes, including assorted bonus awards given out in other categories. Bands were scored out of 300 (100 for each judge) on numerous detailed categories relating to their talents, stage presence, and audience reaction, while local alternative rock/blues quartet Sykotyk Rampage played two special sets out of competition before the battle started and during the judges' deliberations.

Prizes: Along with trophies for the top 3 bands, the first place band received studio recording time, and a hat & headphones from battle sponsors, while the second place band received a gift certificate to the Delta Waterfront Hotel. Nine extra trophies were also given in varied categories, including four for individual musicians and five for collective performance elements, with all 12 trophies featuring custom artwork and designs relating to their category.

Competitors: Non-competitors Sykotyk Rampage aside, nine varied local rock bands (down from 12 initially and 10 the night before) gathered to compete at this battle, most of which were making their battle & Grand Theater debuts, including 7 metal-leaning bands. The competing acts included local hardcore standouts As It Stands, death metal bands The Bear Hunters & The Valentine's Day Massacre, Central Algoma death metal notables For All That Is Lost & Inhuman Methods, classic metal quartet Late & Loud, metal/punk rockers T-Rex Manning, acoustic duo Tea With Lincoln, and veteran rock band Wishbone.

Results: With a tie for first place and a three way tie for third place, the judges had their work cut out for them, but they awarded Late & Loud a narrow first place win, breaking the tie with the second place As It Stands. The judges also chose Wishbone to take third place, breaking their tie with For All That Is Lost & The Valentine's Day Massacre, who were officially considered as tied for fourth. The Bear Hunters finished a point out of the three-way tie in sixth place, while the placements of the other three bands weren't publicized. As for the bonus awards, those went evenly to each band out of fairness, though only three of the awards didn't go to the judges' first choice. The individual performer awards went to Wishbone frontman Dennis Duguay for best vocals, The V.D.M.'s Andrew Angelic for best guitar, The Bear Hunters' Justin Lam for best bass, and F.A.T.I.L.'s Kameron Nicholson for best drums, while the collective band awards went to As It Stands for best audience, Late & Loud for best ensemble, T-Rex Manning for best sound, Inhuman Methods for best headbanging, and Tea With Lincoln for best mosh pit, which was honestly 100% deserved!

Aftermath: Amidst a summer break and a brief breakup that fall, Late & Loud opened for bands like Skull Fist & The Saigon Hookers, and released their EP "Heavy Rockin' Hard Metal" that November. Though they fell inactive after their Rockstar Bar Battle finals run in 2013, they played two final reunion gigs in 2014. As It Stands stayed active with more concerts through that August, but never played afterwards, dissolving in 2014. Wishbone briefly broke up after the battle before reuniting with new lineups from 2013-2014, while both For All That Is Lost & Inhuman Methods broke up as well in early 2013, following their own scattered mid-2012 concert dates. The Valentine's Day Massacre & Tea With Lincoln were common sights locally before relocating to London & St. Catharines respectively that fall, and while the latter are still active, The V.D.M. dissolved in 2013. The Bear Hunters remain heavily active to this day, releasing their debut album in 2014 and playing many concerts in the process, while T-Rex Manning were a familiar sight at local concerts before falling inactive in 2014 themselves.

Some Notable Performers' Newer Bands (Metal/hard rock in italics):

Crimson Crusade (Robert Crossley from Inhuman Methods)
Flat Stanley (Tony Kajnar & Glen Thomas from Wishbone)
Jack Spades (J.D. Pearce & Tiffany Stocco from T-Rex Manning, and Justin Lam & Johnny Belanger from The Bear Hunters)
Jon & His Friends (Jonathan Tiberi from Late & Loud; Based out of Hamilton)
Mourning Wood (Steven Flint & Glen Thomas from Wishbone)
The Peace Vibe (Glen Thomas from Wishbone)
Rattlesnake Hotel (Andrew Angelic from The Valentine's Day Massacre; Based out of London)
Skeyes of Seven (John Mignacca* from As It Stands)
Stereo North (Bill Bennett from T-Rex Manning)
The Suicide Kings (Steven Flint from Wishbone & Mitch Sirie from The Bear Hunters)

Trivia:

  • Four different local bands dropped out from competing in this battle for varying reasons. Three exited before the battle took place, including blues rock quartet The Moves (due to external commitments), funk rock trio The Vertically Impaired (who broke up shortly afterwards), and classic hard rock quintet Turner Up (though 4/5ths of that lineup did take fifth place at the Rock N' Roar Battle in Spanish that month with Havadder.) As well, indie rock trio Cowboys & Indians (who were already late additions) pulled out the day of the battle, as bassist Alex White couldn't make the event.
  • Though initially planned to be judged by crowd reaction, the judges for the Humane Society Battle included prolific local solo guitarist/Audiofumes podcaster Mike Cliffe, Sault Metal Scene owner Rob Figures, and ex-Browbeat frontman Randy "Dutch" Vanderploeg, while battle volunteer Stephanie Becker assisted in tallying scores and in the score tiebreaking. Rob would later return to battle judging at the Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands in April 2013 and then at March 2015's VM Radio Battle of the Bands.
  • Sykotyk Rampage guitarist Dirk Becker served as the evening's MC and co-organizer, which was at least partly why they didn't compete with the other bands at this battle. Their sets that night marked their last live appearances with bassist Brian Cattapan, who left the band that summer due to his continuing out-of-town commitments. He was replaced by ex-The Fury bassist Tony Briglio, and Sykotyk Rampage have remained active since at recent local concerts, including releasing dozens of albums worth of new material.
  • Despite a lower than expected attendance, $600 was raised for the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society, which helped stir discussion of this battle returning in 2013, though none would take place.
  • Although individual scores & complete rankings were not announced, this battle was notable for it's extremely close scores and competitive nature, as disclosed online following the event. The aforementioned ties aside, just six points (averaged out to two points a judge) separated the tied third place bands from the seventh place band.
  • Though Late & Loud pledged to use their recording time won at this battle towards recordings on their debut EP, the sessions for the tracks on "Heavy Rockin' Hard Metal" & it's "Still Hard" 2013 reissue were either done at The Smoke & Oak Room Studio prior to the battle, or were independently recorded, and it's unknown if anything became of the recording time that they won.
  • Inhuman Methods' set at this battle marked their second & final concert appearance with original singer Curtis Moir, who was replaced by Anthony Tverdal just a few days after this battle took place, though that lineup only played a few shows themselves.
  • Bands were allowed to bring their own banners to set up on stage for their sets, which a third of the competing bands (For All That Is Lost, Late & Loud, and T-Rex Manning) took advantage of.
  • Had The Moves or Cowboys & Indians not dropped out from competing at this battle, most members of each could have had another shot at battle victory, as The Moves featured Blackwater alumni Cody McMillan & Dave Pihlaja and ex-Stillbroke bassist Nathan Bouliane, while Cowboys & Indians featured The Crossed frontman Jordan Flesher & Soldiers of Misfortune bassist Alex White, all of which had won local battles in the past decade with the credited bands.
  • Both For All That Is Lost & The Valentine's Day Massacre returned for the Battle For The Blood at The Roosevelt Hotel on June 19th, where they competed for a guaranteed opening slot at the 3 Inches of Blood concert there on July 9th, while T-Rex Manning also played a set out of competition (as frontman J.D. Pearce was promoting both shows.) F.A.T.I.L. reportedly finished second, but it's not clear whether The V.D.M. improved on their fourth place finish at the Humane Society battle or not. The fan-voted winners of the Battle For The Blood were Winkstinger.
  • Late & Loud, The Bear Hunters, and Sykotyk Rampage all competed the following year at The Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands in April 2013. While Sykotyk Rampage didn't advance, Late & Loud & The Bear Hunters finished in 4th & 5th place in the final round. Other Humane Society Battle competitors involved include Wishbone bassist Steven Flint & Bear Hunters guitarist Mitch Sirie in their newer hard rock band The Suicide Kings (who won the battle), and Bear Hunters guitarist Josh Stephney in his stoner/death metal band Giwakwa (who didn't advance to the finals.)
  • Despite the loss of Josh Stephney after his mid-2013 move to Brampton, The Bear Hunters finally clinched their first battle of the bands victory at Viva La Battle at The Canadian Nightclub on November 13th of the following year, earning the right to open for Bam Margera's band Fuckface Unstoppable the following month (which Josh rejoined them for.) Wishbone bassist Steven Flint also competed in this battle with his newer hard rock band Punch, but they finished in third place.
  • Mitch Sirie & Steven Flint also saw expanded battle of the bands success in April 2014 when The Suicide Kings finished second out of 15 bands at the Rock N' Roar Battle of the Bands in Spanish, Ontario, winning $500 and the right to open for Randy Bachman & Honeymoon Suite at that year's Rock N' Roar festival in Spanish. A newly reunited Wishbone lineup also competed, though they did not place, and the competing lineup only featured frontman Dennis Duguay from the Humane Society battle.
  • The Bear Hunters (sans Josh again) competed in both the Speak Easy and VM Radio Battles of the Bands in March 2015, finishing in third in the former and two points shy of first place in the latter. T-Rex Manning bassist Bill Bennett also competed in the VM Radio Battle at The Canadian that same month with his new punk band Stereo North, but they did not advance out of the semifinals after a close final tally.

The Sault Humane Society Battle Of The Bands Recap, Results, And Videos!!

Before we get to my battle of the bands recap, I wanted to extend our deepest condolences to the family & friends of Northern Storm Records owner Rob "Rab" Cranny, who passed away yesterday at the age of 27. While not from the Soo, Rab was a well known figure in the Southern Ontario metal community from his work as a label owner & musician (including with the comedy metal project Detsorgsekalf), and from what I understand, he was an extremely kind and funny person that touched many lives. Woods of Ypres fans may be aware of Rab from his recent links to David Gold tributes, including seeing bands on his label play at the David Gold tribute show in Toronto, along with Northern Storm's involvement in releasing the upcoming David Gold tribute album, which Rab was scheduled to sing "Suicide Cargoload" on. David's old band Will of the Ancients were also signed to Northern Storm Records in the mid-late 2000s. I didn't know Rab at all, but I definitely was very aware of him and what he's done for Ontario metal, and I've never heard anyone say a bad word about him. He was definitely taken from us way too soon, that's for sure. R.I.P. Rab!

Now, let's discuss Friday night's Sault Humane Society Battle of the Bands at The Grand Theater! I'm not going to give this event a review in the traditional sense, because I was in a different position beyond "the SMS guy in the crowd with the camera." I didn't promote this openly before the battle, but I was one of the judges! I was asked by battle organizer Dirk Becker from Sykotyk Rampage if I was interested in volunteering as a judge last month, and I kindly accepted, but just to stay on the safe & impartial side of things, I didn't announce it at all. My fellow judges last night were former Browbeat frontman Dutch Vanderploeg and local solo guitarist Mike Cliffe, and we were assisted by Dirk's niece Stephanie in tallying results and deciding the award winners. I think there was a solid judging panel with fair and qualified choices to judge, and at last night's battle, we were perched up on the balcony to see everything from a clear angle while we judged the proceedings. I've never seen a concert from the balcony like this, but it was an interesting vantage point, if nothing else! Before the battle began, the bands drew numbers out of a hat to decide their performance order, with the exception of The Bear Hunters, who were slotted first by default due to drummer Johnny Belanger's set with Caveman Morrison later that night.

Basswerx Recording Studio was on hand to provide sound, and they did a great job through the night with all of the bands! The opening band last night was the original crash band themselves, Sykotyk Rampage, and though they weren't competing in the battle itself, it at least leaves me free to properly critique their set! They delivered a fun set of songs like "Lit'le Crocochild", "Sex Toy Oh My Baby", and "Treating You Bad" for the fans in attendance, and their improvised take on alternative hard rock and blues is always a fun listen at a local concert! It was also good to see Brian Cattapan on bass again (he was absent the last time I saw the band live), though he didn't seem as animated on stage as he has in the past. Sykotyk Rampage's music isn't for everyone, but it was as fun and creative as I expected it would be! Note that they played a second set of their drinking songs after the last competing band wrapped up, but we were sequestered to judge the battle itself during their second set, so I can't comment on most of it firsthand, but I saw them do "Drinking on the Weekend" and they rocked it for sure!

Now to the battle competitors itself, and I won't spend too much time on them individually for two reasons: They still only had 15 minute sets, and I don't wanna go into great detail about my judging preferences. I want to keep things fair and impartial without publically highlighting anything negative or showing a preferential bias, and I entered the battle with as much of a blank slate as I could so I could judge each band fairly. The opening band was local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters, who unveiled their new logo on Mitch Sirie's guitar and were decked out in effectively bloody white t-shirts. Their set included songs like "Collapse The Sun" and their newer original "Deception", and the fans up front definitely seemed to enjoy their set! They were followed by classic metal quartet Late & Loud, who unleashed originals like "Machine Gun Maiden" and "Whisper of the Damned" on their fans, and they shown a lot of energy and enthusiasm to match their 1980s-inspired sound, look, and atmosphere! Third on the bill would have been local indie trio Cowboys & Indians, but they were absent from the event after bassist Alex White couldn't make it. Disappointing for sure, as their collective talent and past battle successes would definitely have helped them on Friday!

With their absence, local punk quartet T-Rex Manning rushed to take the third slot at the battle. While I've seen 3/4ths of their lineup as the one-off band Pools of Booze, this was the first time I've ever seen T-Rex Manning live, and without going into detail from my judging, they reminded me of a more punk-based variant of singer J.D. Pearce's other bands. Their set was covers heavy, including two Misfits songs and a Blink-182 cover (I think), and their paint splattered suits added to their look well! Local rock quartet Wishbone followed them with a set of their diverse original songs like the new track "Heartbeat", and they shown their talent well with some nice energy, especially from frontman Dennis Duguay! Fifth was local hardcore quintet As It Stands, who definitely attracted the biggest crowd up front of any of the bands on Friday! Their set featured originals like "Embay the Terrible" (now I actually have the right spelling) and their new track "David & Goliath", and their energy and talent seemed to get the right reactions and response! The two Desbarats death metal bands followed them, starting with For All That Is Lost, whose masked look fit with their brutality, and while I won't go into detail with my scores, they're improving quickly! Their set included original songs like "Blood Law" and "Tenth Commandment".

Next was Desbarats death metal quartet Inhuman Methods, and they played two originals (one of which had a callback to a retro cartoon) and a Lamb of God cover during their set. Without giving away my scores and thoughts, they definitely built on their debut in February, though vocal timing is still an issue, particularly on their cover. The Valentine's Day Massacre (pictured) were the penultimate band, and they blasted originals like "Make Death Wait" and "Vampiric" while demonstrating some energetic moves and interaction, mixing death metal and hardcore well! The battle ended softly with local acoustic folk duo Tea With Lincoln, whose talented material and originals (like "Locked Box") somehow encouraged a large circle pit! Though not a genre match with the other bands, the night ended well, and while Sykotyk Rampage partied with their drinking songs, me, Dutch, Mike, and Stephanie deliberated on the award winners in the projection booth. After "Drinking on the Weekend" wrapped up, we went up to the stage, where Dirk thanked the bands and sponsors, and announced the winners, starting with the individual awards! For the first time since the Case's Music battles dried up in 2009, a Sault Ontario battle had awards beyond just the top ranked acts, but who won what? Read on below!

Best Vocals: Dennis Duguay (Wishbone)
Best Guitar: Andrew Angelic (The Valentine's Day Massacre)
Best Bass: Justin Lam (The Bear Hunters)
Best Drums: Kameron Nicholson (For All That Is Lost)
Best Audience: As It Stands
Best Ensemble: Late & Loud
Best Sound: T-Rex Manning
Best Headbanging: Inhuman Methods
Best Mosh Pit: Tea With Lincoln

We came to fairly quick conclusions for the individual awards, though you'll notice that every band got one of these awards in this category. That was out of fairness to ensure that every band won something, and each band or musician got a creatively designed trophy as a result! Late & Loud smashed their "Best Ensemble" trophy, but they were pumped up as it was. In case you guys are curious, I'll say that 6 of the 9 individual awards went to our original choices before we evened everything out, but we agreed that every winner deserved their award, and nothing was a compromise choice based on what was left over! Of course, if you weren't there, the fact that Tea With Lincoln won "Best Mosh Pit" might seem very odd, but they honestly had the only solidly active mosh pit at the battle, and they were 100% the deserving winners! After the individual awards were announced and handed out, the top three bands received their awards, but what did they get? All three bands got trophies, but first place also received studio time, a hat, and a pair of headphones, and second place received a gift certificate to the Delta Waterfront Hotel. The results were extremely close (more on that in a second), but here's the final results for the top 3:

1st Place: Late & Loud*
2nd Place: As It Stands
3rd Place: Wishbone*

We mostly agreed on the results for the top 3, but I have to emphasize something, as the results were EXTREMELY close (that's what the asterisks are for.) According to our scoresheets, we actually had As It Stands & Late and Loud tied for first place, and not only that, but Wishbone were tied with For All That Is Lost and The Valentine's Day Massacre for third place too! That, and the sixth place band was actually one point away from forcing a four-way tie for third, and I'm dead serious. We had a tie for first and a three-way tie for third, it was that competitive and close at the battle, which I've never heard of happening before. When we were deliberating the top three, we had to make a lot of tough choices, so just in case anyone's disappointed with their finish, remember that the results of this battle could have been thrown upside down with just an extra point for any of the top 6 bands. That's a testament to how equally talented the bands were and how even the competition was, and that's very nice to see! Personally, I'd have advocated a play-off or audience vote for the tiebreakers, but I hope we made the right call to break the deadlocks. I will give a special shoutout to T-Rex Manning though, as J.D. was vocally expressing his hope last night to either finish dead last or be disqualified. I won't publically disclose the latter half of the results, but I will say that you were last in our hearts!

So with their razor close victory, Late & Loud have won their first battle, and band members Benn Garside & Josh Hatherley have improved on their 3rd place finish with The Glass Statues at the YMCA battle in March 2009 by claiming first three years later! Their energy, look, old school sound, and enthusiasm prevailed, and though I had fears going in that their lack of a real singer would cost them, they overcame that flawlessly! As It Stands did awesome too, and you guys shouldn't be disappointed with the finish, it literally could have been decided by a coin flip, it was that close! Wishbone's close third place finish sees them return to the upper echelon of a battle, following the Kiss battle in late 2009, which 3/4ths of their current lineup made the finals in with Wishbone & Flat Stanley. $600 was raised for the Humane Society at last night's battle, which is awesome, and though attendance wasn't as big as organizers were hoping, there are apparently hopes to make this battle annual, which would be awesome! Since the Bon Soo & Case's Music battles ended, there hasn't been anything firmly scheduled year to year in Sault Ontario, so hopefully we get another one from the Humane Society next year!

Thanks to all of the bands for their performances, along with Northland Music, The Rad Zone, Music Depot, the Delta Waterfront Hotel, Rock 101, Sports Gold, Fuzednotions Creative Studio, Scott, Steve, and Jim from Basswerx, The Grand Theater, Northeast Security, West 49, Coch's Corner, and Sykotyk Rampage for their support in making the event possible, sponsoring or donating prizes, and helping out on Friday! I also wanna thank Dutch, Mike, and Stephanie for their input and hard work last night, I was impressed with their opinions and professionalism from start to finish, and I'd be honoured to judge with them again if the call came! Same goes for the dropped out bands, it'd have been cool to see them compete if possible, but their interest in the event was awesome! It's been far too long to see a Sault Ontario battle of the bands, and I hope it won't be another two years until the next one! Congratulations again to the winners, and to close this post, while I forgone photos due to my judging, I did get videos!

I got the first song by each competing band (including the non-metal bands) to stay impartial and fair given the nature of the event and my role, though note that I got all these on a tripod with no zooming so I could focus on judging over filming. So here's (in performance order) Sykotyk Rampage playing their song "Li'l Crocochild", The Bear Hunters' original "Deception", Late & Loud's song "Whisper of the Damned", T-Rex Manning's cover of The Misfits' "Bullet", Wishbone's new track "Heartbeat", As It Stands' song "Embay The Terrible" (and the instrumental intro that preceded it), F.A.T.I.L.'s original "Blood Law", Inhuman Methods' song "Inside", The Valentine's Day Massacre's track "Make Death Wait", and Tea With Lincoln's original "Locked Box"!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for a new news post hopefully soon! Thanks everyone!
