This Weekend's Metal/Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

I apologize for the slow news stretch lately, as despite having some new concerts to plug, everything else has been fairly slow for the early part of 2014, but things are guaranteed to pick up soon! In that respect, today's post is 100% dedicated to weekend concert previews (all of which have advance notice), so what heavier artists are rocking the Twin Saults and area this weekend? Read on below to find out!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will continue his current weekly concert arrangement TOMORROW NIGHT with another solo show at The Harp Bar & Grill! Remember, though unannounced on Facebook as of this writing, the calendar on his website confirms he'll be back at the former Madison's Pub tomorrow for what will serve as both his newest solo gig and as a jam/open mic night, so if you love such events, keep that angle in mind! For the concert aspect of tomorrow's event, be sure not to miss Tym's talented acoustic covers of hard rock and metal classics, especially if you live centrally, as this should be another entertaining night of tunes! There's no announced cover charge for this 19+ concert, and a start time of 10:00 PM is likely. For more details, visit the above links! Approaching the sixth weekly installment of his current run at The Harp, Tym always puts in a good show, so definitely consider a run to The Harp tomorrow for this event, and for a preview, here's Tym covering Eric Clapton at the former Foggy Notions!

Next up, we'll take a quick detour across the river, as Charlevoix classic metal veterans Peril will return to The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Last seen there (or in the U.P. at all) in October, these will be Peril's first regional dates of a busy 2014 that will see them play two more Kewadin dates through March, joining frontman Jeff Hudson's other band Scarkazm's own regional dates over the next while, so this should be a big year for them! Peril's classic metal covers and experienced talent should be welcomed back to St. Ignace this weekend, so if you're up for some hard rocking intensity, head down to The Northern Pines Lounge! There's no announced cover charges this weekend, you must be 21 to attend, and 19+ age limits are to be expected. For more details, visit the above links, and for a preview, here's Peril playing 4 covers at a Vanderbilt show in 2012!

Moving back to Sault Ontario to close this post, local alternative/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 will make their Docks Riverfront Grill debuts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! The band's first dates of the new year, it'll be interesting to see this union of Route 69, Gully Yodelers, and Bangers N' Mash alumni in Docks' Playroom for the first time, but their alt-rock covers and gritty sound should serve them well this weekend, so keep a trip to Foster Drive in mind for this weekend for some Lucky 13 action! Like other recent Docks shows, there is NO COVER CHARGE this weekend, though a 10:00 PM start time and 19+ age limit are still in their usual effect. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Lucky 13 have proved to be a consistent and entertaining sight since their debut, so definitely don't bypass this weekend's shows, and for a preview, here's Lucky 13 at The Canadian in 2012!

Finally for this weekend's known hard rock shows, Sault Ontario quartet Glitch will return to their favourite local venue The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY NIGHT in their own first gig of the new year! Note that this is a one night only event, possibly because The Rockstar Bar's hosting local country band Summer Thunder tomorrow night, so if you wanna see Glitch, don't come tomorrow. Featuring alumni of Foothill Road, W.F.O., and Bondar, this newer quartet has been a popular sight at The Algonquin Hotel's upstairs venue since their debut last fall, so don't miss their well mixed blend of covers, including many heavier tunes, on Saturday night! A $5 cover is likely for this 10:30 PM event, and you must be 19 to attend. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Keep the return of Glitch in mind for your Saturday night plans, and for a preview, here's the guys rocking out at their live debut!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news soon, along with this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!! (TheKillingField, Stiffler's Mom, Lucky 13, and Glitch)

We're finally back with a new news post after a quiet weekend, as we're devoting this freezing Monday to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS! A few respected hard rock cover bands have some new concerts advertised, along with a very cool all ages metal show at The Oddfellows Hall later this month, so read on below for what you need to know on the current concert schedule!

Local alternative/hard rock quartet Lucky 13 will take the stage for the first time of the new year THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY at Docks Riverfront Grill! Note that the band has yet to officially confirm these dates, but they are listed on Docks' website's schedule, among other dates that we'll touch on in the next while from other local talent. Last seen at The Rockstar Bar early last month, this weekend's shows will be Lucky 13's first at Docks (unless I've missed any unannounced dates), and it'll be good to see this union of Aftersight, Throwbacks, and Gully Yodelers alumni back at it with their usual high energy covers to kick off 2014! These likely 10:00 PM shows have 19+ cover charges, and according to the schedule above, Docks has scrapped cover charges in recent months, so there is NO COVER this weekend! Stay tuned for updates from the Lucky 13 camp as we hear them (and our previews closer to Friday), and hopefully this weekend's shows keep up their usual talents!

Also this weekend, Sault Ontario classic/hard rock cover quartet Glitch will play their first local concert date of 2014 when they return to The Rockstar Bar THIS SATURDAY! Their first live appearance in almost a month, the event was just announced by guitarist Marco Pedalino on their Facebook group yesterday. A favourite sight at The Rockstar Bar since their debut last fall, look for a varied but often heavy selection of classic songs from this union of Sneaky Pete, Lion Ride, and Tripod The Dog members, so keep their first show of 2014 in mind for this weekend! A $5 cover charge is likely for this 19+ event, and a 10:00 PM start time should be expected. For more details, check the above links! Though their focus on The Rockstar Bar for all of their solo gigs is still somewhat surprising, it's been a great venue for Glitch since their debut, so take in another entertaining night of music from them on Saturday night, and if there's any updates, we'll have them here!

Next up (and as previously hinted at), new local metal promotion agency Heavy North Entertainment are indeed bringing North Bay extreme metal trio TheKillingField back to the Soo for their first official concert, which goes down at The Oddfellows Hall on Friday, January 24th! Last seen locally at the 33rd Roosevelt Hotel metal night in September 2011 (and their first Oddfellows appearance since opening for Cattle Decapitation in 2009), it's been way too long for TheKillingField's brutal and technical originals to grace the Soo, and knowing how many fans they've made here, they should pick up right where they left off in just under three weeks! Joining them are fellow North Bay standouts Buried Out Back (featuring ex-Empyrean Plague guitarist Dave Strba), who you may remember as one of the openers at Hallows Die's June 2012 show at The Canadian. Their death metal sound should be right at home with the local crowd on the 24th, so be sure not to miss their second local date! Like the pre-H.N.E. Devil's Night show at The Oddfellows Hall, an extensive band roster is slotted for this ALL AGES show, so what locals can be expected?

Though the band lineup is subject to change, TheKillingField will headline at midnight on the 24th with Buried Out Back at 11:00 PM, and while the 10:00 PM slot is currently vacant, bands like AlgomA and Brutaly Fatal have expressed interest in filling it (we'll keep you guys posted!) The 9:15 PM slot currently belongs to local thrash quartet Pillory in what would be their first show since last summer, their Oddfellows Hall debut, and (I assume) their first show with a full lineup since their debut in November 2012. Great to see Pillory back at it, hopefully they have copies of their EP for sale too! Local death metal standouts The Bear Hunters (who have opened for both of the headliners) are slotted at 8:10 PM, while Blood Shed Productions goregrind duo Rotopsy are slotted at 7:30 PM for their second live appearance. Newer local funk/metal trio The Strange Coyotes will return to the site of their inception at 6:45 PM, with the lineup rounded out by new classic metal quartet Project 421's second show and Oddfellows debut at 6:00 PM, and Strange Coyotes singer/guitarist Chase Wigmore opening with a solo set at 5:15 PM.

This ALL AGES concert will have a door opening time of 5:00 PM, and while admission will be $12 at the door, advance ticket information is forthcoming. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's great to see Tyler delivering with a big concert out of the gate, and hopefully there's a good turnout to begin Heavy North Entertainment's local run! Stay tuned for updates on the last band slot, advance tickets, and more as we hear them!

Finally for today's hard rock concert announcements, local party/hard rock trio Stiffler's Mom will return to Docks Riverfront Grill themselves on February 7th & 8th for their second & third announced dates of the new year! Like with the aforementioned Lucky 13 dates this weekend, Stiffler's Mom have yet to officially confirm these dates, though they are confirmed through Docks' official website, so visit the above links for that source. To be their first Docks shows in 2 months, it'll be great to see this favourite veteran outfit back at this popular Foster Drive venue next month, so don't miss their often heavy and well mixed cover tunes at Docks next month! As with the Lucky 13 shows, expect a 10:00 PM-ish start time, NO COVER, and a 19+ age limit. Check the above links for more details, and stay tuned for more from both Stiffler's Mom, and some more February Docks hard rock shows with their own Stiffler's Mom connections!

That's all for today, but stay tuned soon for more new Docks concert announcements, and more updates! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Anvil & Tym Morrison), And More Recent News Updates!!

We're back with a new news post on this cold Friday evening, and today, it includes a bunch of recent assorted stories, news from a recently reactivated metal project, and LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS concerning a pretty big event this spring, and first, a show TONIGHT and recurring four more times this month, so here's what you need to know!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will (as expected) continue his weekly concert arrangement at The Harp Bar & Grill TONIGHT, and for the rest of the month too! Apologies for the short notice for tonight's event, Tym only just publically confirmed this show earlier this evening via it's Facebook event page. Entering the fifth week of his current arrangement with the former Madison's Pub, Tym's newly updated calendar on his official website (which now runs off of Google Calendar, a big improvement) confirms that he'll be back at The Harp over the next four Fridays as well (January 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st), while the entries there elaborate the theme of his Harp gigs too, as while Tym is the primary performer and host of the events, they also double as jam/open mic nights, so if you like performing at such events, keep that angle in mind! Tym's shows this month (including TONIGHT) all start at 10:00 PM, none have an announced cover charge, and you must be 19 to attend. For more details, check the above links!

It's great to see Tym giving attention to his website's calendar/schedule again, so hopefully these give us a "new" outlet to hear about his solo and band dates! This arrangement with The Harp is going well so far, so don't miss Tym there TONIGHT or over the other Fridays this month, and for a preview, here's Tym and ex-Half Past frontman Luke LeBlanc covering Extreme's "More Than Words"!

Next up, a huge concert's coming our way on Saturday, March 15th at The Canadian Nightclub, when Toronto metal legends Anvil return to the Soo! Last seen at The Canadian 20 months ago in July 2012, the stars of the acclaimed documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" are still touring in support of their newest CD, last year's "Hope In Hell", and if their 2012 show here was any indication, they'll put in another wild and very heavy set of classic and highly influential originals in March! Drummer Robb Reiner's son Tyler's hardcore/metal quartet Caym will also return to the Soo as openers at this show, marking their second local stop after opening for Skeletonwitch at The Canadian last June, and their extreme hybrid sound should fit in well in their return this spring! Local support will include local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades (in their second announced date with new guitarist Jesse Cook), which will also mark members J.D. Pearce & Tiffany Stocco's second time opening for Anvil in town, as they both played with Frightlight at the July 2012 concert, so they'll fit in nicely again!

The other currently confirmed opening band is new local classic metal band Project 421 in their second announced concert (and Canadian Nightclub debut), so look for these talented veterans to rock the stage once again in March! A third local opening band is being sought, and though their identity has yet to be confirmed, The Suicide Kings, Punch, Telephone & Address, and The Danger Cats have shown public interest in the empty slot. We'll keep you posted when something's announced! This 19+ concert has an advance ticket price of $20 or $25 at the door, and while you can buy them online right now at this link, they will be on sale through local merchants in the near future. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's great to have Anvil and Caym back in Sault Ontario after their own well received dates here in recent years, and there's a promising lineup of local openers too, so stay tuned for updates as they roll in, and get your tickets A.S.A.P. online at the above links! Kudos to J.D. once again for another huge concert, he outdoes himself over & over!

Also today, here's the latest concerning a recently dormant Blood Shed Productions death metal project, that being Social Suicide, who appear to be getting back off the ground after a few months of dormancy! The Tyler St. Amour-led band is apparently working on new jam sessions of their original songs and covers, along with lots of new material, as per their Facebook page yesterday. The post also indicated that they'll have an all new lineup plus "a secret non-credited member of the original lineup", which would imply that either Anthony Boudreau or Keeghan Rosso is back in the fold, but again, Tyler did say that his identity was "secret" for one reason or another. Social Suicide have been active under varying lineups since at least August 2011, but they have only seen scattered activity since, though they did play at least one public set (which I believe was solo) at a Blood Shed Productions event in August of last year. Hopefully we'll get lots more updates soon from Social Suicide, as for a project around for this long, I'm surprised they haven't done a lot more. Stay tuned for updates as we hear them!

Finally for today, here's a handful of assorted shorter news stories from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

  • According to singer/guitarist Darby Wigwaus' personal Facebook page, local sludge/doom metal trio AlgomA played an impromptu set on New Year's Eve during Honest Job's concert at 180 Projects, marking their first live appearance in over 4 months, and returning them to the site of their debut show from last spring (which also featured Honest Job.) Nice to hear that AlgomA are back at it, and hopefully 2014's a huge year for them!
  • Local progressive metal solo project The Hiroshima Mutant Mindframe have posted a handful of new djent recordings onto their Soundcloud page in the last few days, including a Periphery cover, a different version of their original "Whatever", and some "Drop E Riffage", which all sound very promising and brutal, so give them a look at the above links! Matt's talented, don't bypass his work!
  • Woods of Ypres fan Jacob Brooks has posted an unofficial "Live & Rarities" album onto BandCamp that compiles 9 live recordings from one of their last concerts in St. Paul, Minnesota along with two rehearsal tracks of Woods of Ypres playing "Shedding The Deadwood" & "I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery", neither of which was played in official setlists at the time. All proceeds from the album (which is on a "name your price" model) go to David Gold's family, so consider picking it up or checking out these nice quality recordings from late in their run!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news soon, including perhaps our next CD review? Find out shortly! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Stiffler's Mom), Weekend Concert Previews, And More!!

Four posts in two days, we're off to a fast start for 2014! Today's post mostly relates to weekend concert previews, including a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for Saturday night, but we also have lineup notes and debuts for two hard rock bands playing this weekend, and some more assorted notes to round out today's post. As for Tym Morrison's weekly arrangement at The Harp, while I assume it'll continue tomorrow night, I am currently awaiting official confirmation, but when announced, that will be up on the site as soon as possible. Now, let's begin today's news/preview post!

Local party/hard rock mainstays Stiffler's Mom will kick off 2014 in style with a headlining concert THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only just announced on Monday, and I held it until today to avoid a redundant re-post. The first local concert date for Stiffler's Mom since we officially rolled them into our full coverage, Greg, Mike, and Jobn were last seen upstairs at The Rockstar Bar six weeks ago, and if you're familiar with their fun live concert dates and skilled experience, you'll know they'll be up to their usual tricks again in their first date of the new year! A $5 cover charge is likely for Saturday night, a 10:00 PM start time is likely as well, and you must be 19 to attend. For more details, visit the above links (as for one reason or another, this show doesn't have an event page like their late-2013 shows.) This should be an entertaining and often heavy show, so keep it in mind for THIS SATURDAY, and for a preview, here's the guys covering Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train"!

Now to the weekend's heavier dates that we knew about already, including the new Griphook lineup's public debut TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Roosevelt Hotel! As you may remember, the band officially replaced Ottawa-bound frontman Jim O'Leary with bassist Dan Beaupre's former 100 Gran bandmate Joel Syrette last week, so this weekend's concerts will be the local hard/classic rock quartet's first verifiable live gigs with Joel up front and their first public non-stag & doe appearance since the Ray Brown benefit in October (not counting 7 Year Itch dates.) Last seen at The Rosie in April, it'll be interesting to hear how the new Griphook lineup does, but Joel & Dan have chemistry from the 100 Gran days, and while Joel isn't overly similar to Jim musically from what I've seen, he is a very talented singer & guitarist, so this should work well! Admission should be free for this weekend's 19+ dates, and a 10:00 PM start time is likely. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and for a preview, here's Griphook's original lineup covering AC/DC last year!

Finally for currently confirmable heavier shows this weekend, prolific Sault Michigan hard rockers RamWagon will debut a new lineup of their own TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT when they make their first 2014 stops at The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino! These will be RamWagon's first dates since replacing the departed Marcel Grengs with former Monkey's Uncle drummer Ron Suchey, and given Ron's past work in that band with RamWagon bandmate Nathan Switzer, there should be ready-made chemistry for the new lineup's debut this weekend! Also in lineup changes, the band appears to have parted ways with guitarist Cody Reed at some point late last year, as per his absence from their currently listed Facebook lineup. Unlike with Marcel, a reason has not been publically announced for Cody's departure, but it sounds like it happened somewhat recently, as Cody's personal Facebook page still has RamWagon's banner as his cover photo. He has not been replaced as of yet, but hopefully the split was amicable, and best of luck to Cody in the future!

With lots of wide-ranging modern and older hard rock covers in store, kick off 2014 in good order for the first heavier shows of 2014 across the river with RamWagon! Like usual, there's no announced cover charge, a 9:00 PM-ish start time, and a 21+ age limit. For more details, visit the above links, and for a preview, here's RamWagon's original lineup covering Cameo at LemmaFest last summer!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band or company name:

  • If you didn't hear any more formal word on why Colosimo's Music Store closed, it's likely related to the closure of it's original Thunder Bay location last August due to declining business as a result of online shopping, as per this news article. Info on the Soo branch (which replaced the relocated Case's Music on Spring Street in 2012) isn't given there, but it definitely closed around the same time last summer. At least nothing bad happened locally, but best of luck to the former staff!
  • Were you still curious as to the identity of The Debts, the new punk band that headlined the Danger Cats-featured X-Mess acoustic show at LopLops last month? I assume it's safe to say now that their lineup includes prolific local musician (and Case's Music owner) Jay Case, Blues Harvest/Pesto Shirts alum Jake Rendell, and his former Garage Inc. bandmate Ryan Seabrook. I know they're not a metal band, but I just wanted to answer an open question from our coverage of this event! My source is personal Facebook postings.
  • "The original crash band" Sykotyk Rampage have announced a new album for release in 2014, that being a sequel to last year's "Environ-Mental Suits" (subtitled "Anvil of Antioch".) It's album cover was posted on their Facebook page on Tuesday, and it's considered their 45th album, indicating that at least one more is in the works for this year (as they have 43 officially so far.) Release details are forthcoming, but this will likely be a free release like their other recent albums. I'm curious to hear more, and stay tuned!

That's all for today, but stay tuned tomorrow in case there's any late-notice concerts to plug, with other news also lying in wait! Thanks everyone!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes soon! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? January 2014 Update

I hope everyone had a great New Year's Day! Today, we have our first monthly feature post of 2014, and as usual, it's this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! Of course, we're again looking at the upcoming slate of announced metal/hard rock albums in Sault Ontario, in order to profile their statuses and whereabouts, albeit with two removals. One is the newly released "Cringe at the Cross" by Pillory (look for our review of that later this month), and the other is being acknowledged at the end of the post, but we also have a new addition this month! As before, updated entries have the album's name in italics. With all of that said, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AlgomA's first EP

Rumoured Songs: "Fell Down A Well", "Reclaimed By The Forest", "Tertiary Syphillis", "Go On, Git!!", "Extinct Volcanoes", "Bedsores"

Background: After just two live concerts, new local stoner metal trio AlgomA (featuring BeeFMouTH and Fuller alumni) began work on studio recordings last summer as per their Facebook page, and though the end goal is vague through that source, singer/guitarist Darby Wigwaus's film production company 62nd Chamber Productions' website confirmed that they are in fact working on a debut demo EP.  Vocal recordings were completed in August, and they were apparently sending off the tracks to be post-produced in Southern Ontario, with mixing being taken care of by veteran local musician Mark Rand (source here.) You can see pictures from the sessions in this Facebook album, but stay tuned for more info as it rolls in!

Current Release Status: No reasonable idea yet, but for a band launching recording sessions so suddenly after launch, this isn't unheard of. The guys have a lot of experience in music and production, and hopefully we see the final product of these recording sessions sooner or later, so keep an eye out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As It Stands' third EP

Rumoured Songs: "Conception", "Big Problem, Little Lock City", "Rise Above", "One Last Chance", "One Less Than Wayne Gretzky", "Big Bucks, No Whammy", "Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Ho", "Embay the Terrible", "Oh Herm, Herm Delish", "David & Goliath", "Stay Together For The Kids" (Blink-182 cover)

Background: Continuing their high success levels since their local re-emergence in 2010, hardcore quintet As It Stands started recording sessions for their third EP with Metalworks Studios in Mississauga in July 2011 with producer Kevin Dietz. The sessions lasted just a few days, but a lot got accomplished, and you can see some of the happenings from the sessions on their official studio vlog, which features some audio samples and video of some members recording their parts. The vlog also confirmed that their cover of Blink-182's "Stay Together For The Kids" was recorded in Mississauga, and that the songs will be part of an EP, not a full length album as was previously believed. It was currently unclear whether the songs they recorded at Stereo Soul Studios in 2010 and/or in Stoney Creek in 2011 will be featured on the EP in some form. A new track named "Oh Herm, Herm Delish" was posted onto SoundCloud in early 2012, with studio copies of "Conception" & "Big Problem, Little Lock City" also being uploaded to their Facebook page last year, both of which you can stream at this location. Mixing was underway locally with Brendan Clace at the former Dimension Studios, so stay tuned for more news on this EP hopefully soon!

Current Release Status: Though the band has finally returned to activity last fall, I have no idea if a full EP release is still in the cards. Dimension Studios closed in the interim, and recent posts have indicated that As It Stands are mostly starting fresh with new material for their next live dates, with only a few 2010-2012 originals returning, so a release of the older EP sessions may not be a current priority. They did seem to have everything under control and well planned for the sessions and their studio work., but at this point, I think fans would be excited to just see As It Stands live again. Just in case, keep an eye out for any possible updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bear Hunters - Eternal Hibernation

Rumoured Songs: "Dominate", "Collapse The Sun", "Karma", "Deception", "Bloodthirst", "Casualties Of War", "Overthrown", "Condemned", "Succumb To Eternity", "Render This Void"

Background: Local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters formally announced that they'd begun recording for their debut EP "Bloodthirst" in May 2011, just days after adding then-guitarist Josh Stephney to the band, but details were extremely scant following that news, and the recording plans fell dormant until January 2012, when the band announced plans to record material towards a full length demo release. Setbacks (including a dead computer) have pushed back a planned release, including their non-album cover of Woods of Ypres' "Kiss My Ashes (Goodbye)", but 2013 sessions with producer James White at White Wreckords have been far more fruitful. To be entitled "Eternal Hibernation", only guitar solos and vocals were remaining to record as of November. Guitarist Mitch Sirie confirmed in a recent Facebook e-maul that all of the band's pre-"Servitude" originals will be on the album, with anything newer planned to be on their second release. The album will feature guitar tracks from Josh Stephney, who recorded his parts before moving to Brampton.

Current Release Status: Current indications have "Eternal Hibernation" coming out this coming winter, but nothing final has been confirmed beyond optimistic online postings. This is by far the closest they've been to completing recording sessions towards an album release, so fingers crossed things stay on track!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crucify The Whore - Welcome To Earth

Rumoured Songs: "People These Days", "Rectified Rectal Tragedy"

Background: The newest demo from Sault Ontario independent death/grind label & studio Blood Shed Productions, the Ringsnaps Gibson-led solo project is planning "Welcome To Earth" to be a full length release, with early song samples posted to the label's YouTube channel late last year. The album cover is also up on C.T.W.'s Facebook page, but due to potentially disturbing imagery, we won't link to it here. Stay tuned for updates on this and other Blood Shed CD projects as we get them!

Current Release Status: Every post that I've read indicates that "Welcome To Earth" will come out in "Winter 2014", and given the home self-production of their material, I'm inclined to believe that estimate. Either way, keep an eye out for some new grind soon in 2014!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gates of Winter - Perihelion

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "Wormhole Mechanics", "Prometheus"

Background: Despite a hiatus from live concerts lasting almost 5 years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". The first glimpse of the new album was unveiled in February 2010, when frontman/producer Lee Maines uploaded a snippet of their new song "The Stars Call My True Name" onto his YouTube channel, and he followed that up with more demo & rehearsal clips sporadically over the last couple of years, though all were later taken down. The band launched a new Facebook page in August 2010 to keep fans updated on the sessions, including the unveiling of a new song title, "Time Warp", and while Sault native Jon Morrison was announced as the album's drummer that fall, the album will feature programmed drums. In November 2011, bassist Steve Furgiuele confirmed in a YouTube video that the album, now titled "Perihelion", was planned for release in December 2012, with some older re-recordings likely for the summer, but Lee confirmed last month that the album would be delayed further, be retracted to EP length, and possibly be renamed. Other new songs, tentatively called "Wormhole Mechanics" & "Prometheus", was previewed in this video & this video that were uploaded last year & this April respectively. Whether ex-keyboardist Brian Holmes will be included on the EP is currently unknown.

Current Release Status: Personal commitments and the like have slowed things down incredibly, but in the band's most recent preview video (featuring audio samples), Gates of Winter hinted that work was winding down on "Perihelion", including noting that "the silence ends soon." A release this year is likely now targeted, but good art takes time, and knowing Gates of Winter's talent and attention to detail, they won't wanna release this until everything's perfect. I'll admit that I know a bit more on "Perihelion" than what I've posted here, but I'll wait until more public word comes out before elaborating, so keep an eye out for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Haggith - A Place Of Our Own

Rumoured Songs: "Let Me In", "Cowardly Hearts Beneath The Stars", "Long Talk", "To Kansas: The Ballad of K4/K5", "This Potato May Be Used As A Flotation Device", "A Place Of Our Own"

Background: The planned 48th solo album from prolific local solo musician and hard rock drummer Mike Haggith, "A Place Of Our Own" is a planned concept album similar to other recent solo albums of his, though themes and overall genres aren't known yet. Announced on his Facebook page on November 25th (complete with an early track listing and album cover), this album features no songs dropped from recent albums at present, and it is replacing the indefinitely delayed "The Tower" in it's release order. Tracking and mixing is currently underway for the album, likely at Galactic Records, though it's unknown whether Mike will do any work locally at Paperclip Productions again for it. Stay tuned for updates!

Current Release Status: Mike is currently projecting a February release for "A Place Of Our Own", which should be a reliable date, as Mike's always been forthcoming and honest about the release dates of his solo albums and any delays on them! Keep an eye out for "A Place Of Our Own" early next year for his latested entertaining solo effort!

RedD Monkey - Opus 2

Rumoured Songs:
"Broken Parts", "Losing Friends", "The Jock Song"

Background: The planned third CD from this popular local hardcore punk/classical trio, RedD Monkey have hyped "Opus 2" (a follow-up to last year's "All Baroque")  in online posts through this spring, along with previewing the disc at a Toronto concert on June 1st, though further updates on it's release status have yet to be made, nor has a release schedule been announced. I'd assume that "Opus 2" was recorded in a similar method to "All Baroque", but that's just speculation given that both CDs were labelled as opuses in a series. Keep an eye in case something's announced!

Current Release Status: I'm not really sure, but given that the sessions appear to be complete, and a preview of it was held in June, a release can't be terribly far off. I imagine it could be on hold until their next tour cycle to have a proper CD release show, but stay tuned for updates!

Sailor's Tongue's debut album

Rumoured Songs:
"Float, "Out of the Woodwork", "Wired For No Sound", "Shadow", "Doctor John", "BootScattered", "Beauty's Limousine", "Don't Shoot The Messenger", "Horses & Trains", "Navy"

Background: Despite only playing two gigs (both at the Rotaryfest Second Stage) since returning from their three year breakup in 2012, local hard rock notables Sailor's Tongue have hit the studio to record what I believe is their first full length album, which will feature their current quintet lineup. Drummer Dean McKey uploaded four tracks (some labelled as demos) to his Soundcloud page last year that are likely towards the album, while there are existing songs on their Reverbnation page from earlier sessions that will likely be featured in some form. Though info on the album is as sporadic as their live dates, a preview demo CD named "Pierced" was sold at their Rotaryfest set in July featuring 7 tracks, though Dean later told me on Facebook that the album was just a sampler for attendees and was not the final product. Keep an eye out for updates!

Current Release Status: No finite idea as of right now, but given their long breaks between live concerts & page postings, there hasn't been many outlets to give updates either. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see the final CD released at next year's Rotaryfest, but maybe they'll play more live dates in the interim to shake up that guess. In any event, keep posted to hear more!

Shit Liver's debut EP

Rumoured Songs:
"Or What?", "Hateroleum", "(Friendly Old) Uncle Joe", "Shit Liver", "Fabricated Nonsense", "Helen Kellers", "Shift Liver", "You're Scared", "Contribute or Perish", "Pennotration", "Soo'er Living", "Drowning In Shit", "Survival of the Shittest", "It's Not My Problem", "Shit Will Prevail", "Liverated"

Background: Curiously not plugged at all on their online pages until January 2013, I have heard from those close to the band that local grimecore trio Shit Liver have independently working on a debut EP since at least mid-2012 which is supposed to have 14 songs, 13 of which were posted onto their new Reverbnation page in March. A demo disc with 5 planned tracks was visible at their local return show last February, but as they've only minimally acknowledged EP plans online, it's not clear how far along they are in terms of actually releasing these on disc. Keep posted for updates!

Current Release Status: On their Facebook page last spring, Shit Liver implied that this album could be done by their local concert return in February at The Roosevelt Hotel, but that has since came & went. Given how quiet they've been on the recording sessions, I have no idea how close to a physical release they are, but from what I understand, the sessions are done or close to it. Potentially complicating things is the band's recent relocation to Toronto, which has unknown implications on the release of the sessions in an EP format. Hopefully we hear some big news on this front soon, possibly in conjunction with future concerts!

The Sorrow Fields - Godlessness

Rumoured Songs: "Godlessness"

Background: Previously known as Animas, April Eyes, and By The Gods, The Sorrow Fields is the long gestating black/death metal solo metal project from Bear Hunters/Suicide Kings guitarist Mitch Sirie. He resurrected the project under it's new name in 2012, complete with an atmospheric & dark sound, and he has sporadically updated fans as to his newest planned debut album via their YouTube channel and deleted Facebook page. As of June 2013, he'd titled the album "Godlessness", with a preview of the title track and another unnamed song uploaded there to check out, but news since has been slow to absent.

Current Release Status: I have no clue, but knowing how delayed his past solo album "Hollow Hope" was prior to it's cancellation, this could be a long road. Mitch is a workhorse with his two bands also, so that likely plays a part in any delays for his solo material, but I've heard nothing concerning the project's end as of today, so take that for what it's worth. In case new "Godlessness" or Sorrow Fields news rolls in, we'll have it here!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Suicide Kings - King of the World

Rumoured Songs: "Into the Fray", "Red Rover", "King of the World", "Way Out Of Hell", "Take Me Away", "Beaten Down", "Two More Jag"

Background: Already off to a quick launch with numerous concerts since their fall 2012 debut, local hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings surprisingly announced that they were officially working on their first EP on their Facebook page last February. Three weeks later, the band revealed in another Facebook posting that they were busy working on their own material, and they had plans to complete an EP by the end of the spring featuring 5-7 songs, which was recorded over the past month at The Smoke & Oak Room Studio with producer Dave Pihlaja. As of last spring, the tracks were in the final stages of mixing, though recent updates have been limited to in-concert teasers of the EP, where the reveal of the title came from. Stay tuned for more!

Current Release Status: With the EP likely done it's recording phase, it's now likely a waiting game for the release of "King of the World". I know that a brief band member posting on Facebook suggested a free distribution of the EP, but that was either premature or incorrect. I just hope this doesn't encounter the same delays that have hampered bassist Mitch Sirie's other band The Bear Hunters' demo recording plans. Things seem in good hands so far, so watch out for updates as they come in!

Also, we've removed one album from the series due to it's unlikely release status at present, so read on below for information!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haggith - Apocalypse II

Rumoured Songs: Unknown

Background: In November, now-defunct local grunge/alternative hard rock quartet Haggith announced on their Facebook page that a sequel to their October 2012 zombie concept album "Apocalypse" would likely come out on December 7th, in honour of their reported final concert that night at The Algonquin Pub. Though band members had teased other big album projects in preceding months (including one themed for their song "Public Enemy"), this would apparently have been their last studio album as Haggith. Aside from a post of the album cover in May, posts relating to the progress of the recording sessions weren't been made, but any recording sessions that took place occurred at PaperClip Productions with their current/final lineup. The show came and went without a CD release, with guitarist Daniel Horton confirming in a conversation that night that they weren't able to complete sessions for it before the final show.

Reason For Removal: I mainly removed "Apocalypse II" because it's chances of a release are much smaller following Haggith's surprise breakup last month, though I will note that Daniel didn't close the door on a posthumous release in some form. However, if any completed tracks do make a public presence, they could just be via a free posting (similarly to what Lion Ride did with their unfinished album recordings last year), but stranger things have happened. With all of the current band projects featuring Haggith alumni (i.e. Punch, The Strange Coyotes, and Project 421), the guys are sure to be busy in 2014, so I'm not holding my breath for a surprise release of "Apocalypse II" in the imminent future, but just in case, keep it in mind!

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! Our next monthly feature post will either be our Defunct Local Band Profiles of Mike Vincent's solo project and Self Control on the 10th, or our review of Pillory's debut EP "Cringe At The Cross", so watch out for both this month, and for weekend concert previews later today! Thanks everyone!

A New Local Concert Promotion Agency, New Videos, And More!!

For our first news post of the new year, we have new video finds of the "newly posted" and "newly found" varieties, along with some assorted recent news items, but first, here's news on a new concert promoting group to watch out for (and check out our preview of 2014 at large in the local metal scene in the post below this one!)

Remember how Pillory/Social Suicide bassist Tyler St. Amour promoted the Devil's Night concert for Blood Shed Productions at The Oddfellows Hall in October? Well, it looks like he is following through with plans to promote more concerts on a larger scale, as he launched the Facebook page for Heavy North Entertainment yesterday! The aim is to promote metal and grindcore concerts in the Soo and bring in out of town bands for them, and the Facebook description is optimistic concerning plans to make sure that planned events take place and requested bands will come here. The page also includes pictures of many bands that played at the afrorementioned Devil's Night show, along with a company logo, but further information is not there yet in terms of concerts. I will note that there was early indications of Tyler bringing North Bay metal trio TheKillingField back to the Soo after the success of the Devil's Night show, but it remains to be seen if that's still in the cards. I'm very curious to see where Heavy North Entertainment goes from here, especially if they can live up to some of their hype!

I would assume there's going to be more collaborations with Blood Shed Productions at future H.N.E. events, which is great for their exposure, but be sure to stay tuned to the SMS and the above links for more details on Heavy North Entertainment, who are now in our Other Local Metal Links on your left!

Next up, remember on Monday how I alluded to videos that I'd seen of new Griphook frontman Joel Syrette's old band 100 Gran? Well, they've never found their way here before (despite being over 6 years old), so now's as good a time as any! 100 Gran was a classic/blues rock band that was active in the Sault area in the 2000s, with Joel appearing to be their only constant member, though surviving online information is minimal on them. YouTube user Ojib07 uploaded 12 videos of them in action at two late 2000s installments of Hempfest in nearby Ophir onto her YouTube channel, including a 2008 cover of a Traffic song featuring bassist Dan Beaupre (also of Griphook) and former Huckster drummer Cliff Alloy. The rest are from the 2007 Hempfest, and there are a few heavier covers within! Joining covers of everyone from The Black Keys to Indigenous, we do see 100 Gran's then-lineup (featuring ex-Driving Dave Home bassist David Grawbarger & prolific local drummer Ed Young) covering a pair of Jimi Hendrix classics!

The Hendrix covers include renditions of "Red House" and (as embedded below) "Manic Depression", and on these and other videos, we get a solid sense of both 100 Gran's skill and Joel's vocal & guitar abilities! I like the soulful qualities and smooth singing voice, and he does know his way around some tough guitar parts, so even if he has Jim O'Leary's shoes to fill, he should do a solid job of it with Griphook! Check out 100 Gran covering "Manic Depression" in 2007 below, and don't miss the new Griphook this weekend at The Roosevelt Hotel!

Also in new video finds, Ashes To Dust guitarist Alex Hemy's newest cover video was posted onto his YouTube channel yesterday, and it's a cover of John Mayer's "Heartbreak Warfare"! Continuing with his trend of multi-camera videos with him on vocals & guitar (though featuring drums this time), it's again well done and put together, but I'm not sure if this song is the best showcase for Alex's vocals, given it's structure. Solid work as usual though, so check it out below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • An aspiring local metal/hard rock drummer named Brett Norton is currently looking to jam or join a local band project, as per his post on our Facebook page last week. If you're interested in trying him out, message Brett on Facebook at this link!
  • According to their Facebook page yesterday, Sault Ontario hardcore punk quintet Destroilet are going to "take a little live break" and plan to return with new material for a new album (which would be their third total, but second if you count last year's full-length as a reissue of their original EP.) As long as this break doesn't last two years again, all should be well, so stay tuned for updates!
  • Though broken up for 9 months now, defunct Central Algoma death metal quartet For All That Is Lost posted a new audio recording of guitarist Brook Moreau jamming their song "Black Ritual" onto their Reverbnation page last week, which sounds good, so check it out at this link! Note that I have no clue if this is just a posthumous bonus, or if it's a precursor to a reunion, but just in case, keep an eye out!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for both this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post and weekend concert previews tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

2014: A Preview & What To Watch Out For

Happy New Year to all of our readers and fans! After another big and highly eventful year in the local metal scene, 2014 is already looking to top it, so as has become a yearly occurrence, we're going to take a look at announced events and possible things to watch out for and expect in the coming 12 months! With that said, let's begin this preview of the year at large!

In terms of concerts, most of the currently verifiable metal/hard rock shows in 2014 as of today are in the Sault Michigan area thanks to recent Kewadin Casino concert announcements, none on a bigger scale than Poison frontman Bret Michaels' return to The Dreammaker's Theater in the Soo on January 18th (with Firehouse in tow!) Other heavier-leaning shows across the river that I can source at the moment are at The Rapids Lounge at the Soo Kewadin and at The Northern Pines Lounge in St. Ignace, with local standouts RamWagon and two Northern Michigan metal outfits featuring the prolific Jeff Hudson (Peril and Scarkazm) playing under the regional Kewadin umbrella this year. Major concert events to keep an eye out for in 2014 in the Eastern U.P. include the fourth annual LemmaFest in June, The Sugar Island Music Festival in August, the Rock Till You Drop battle of the bands at The Chippewa County Fair, and a possible return of the Walk To Rock Against Bullying in September.

Check out out schedule on the right for current dates that I know of, and more are sure to follow from them and other acts, including some likely new modern rock shows from Allstar Promotions at The Dreammaker's Theater, and hopefully much more at other venues! In Sault Ontario, I only know of 100% verifiable shows this coming weekend at present, including Griphook's first public dates with new singer Joel Syrette at The Roosevelt Hotel on Friday & Saturday, Stiffler's Mom's return to The Rockstar Bar on Saturday (more on that tomorrow), and assuming the arrangement continues, a Tym Morrison solo gig at The Harp on Friday. Anything else is either not fully confirmed publically or unannounced, but what could we expect? Look to Hempfest and Rotaryfest for some usual heavier acts on their stages, along with events like The Soo Zombie Walk, promoter J.D. Pearce's annual Halloween party, Toystock, the Sewer Swampstravaganza, and perhaps the return of Bushplane Musical Madness or some battles of the bands for some good metal/hard rock action this year!

As usual, we'll have updates on new shows as soon as we can verify them, with a mix of new younger talent and experienced veterans a guarantee throughout 2014, so don't sleep on anything that happens, lest you miss a big announcement! As for new CD/album releases, we saw a surprisingly high amount last year, but there's a good amount that are in progress or partially/completely finished that could find their way into our CD players in the next 12 months. As documented in our "Where Are The New Albums?" series (to be continued on Thursday), artists like AlgomA, As It Stands, The Bear Hunters, Gates of Winter, Mike Haggith, RedD Monkey, Sailor's Tongue, Shit Liver, The Sorrow Fields, and The Suicide Kings have all started yet-unreleased album sessions, and that doesn't count the usually busy slate from Blood Shed Productions artists or Sykotyk Rampage, but how many of them will get their new material out this year? Sault Michigan has some extant possible albums too thanks to 415E, Half A Man, The Highest of Fives, SweetKenny, and various Werehold Records artists, so don't let them slip by!

Of course, we know very little on the coming events of 2014, but this is always a good way to set some early primers for the year to come, as anything can happen! Hopefully this is the best year yet for the scene and the site, so follow along for the ride, and stay tuned tomorrow for weekend concert previews and this year's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! Thanks everyone, and Happy New Year!
