LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Gutter Demons & Stiffler's Mom), Plus New Videos!!

For the first time since April 1st, we have a new news post on the SMS that has no imminent concert previews! This has been a long time coming, but I'm back home, and we have some big stories to touch on regarding recent video uploads, and first, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, so here's what you should know!

Montreal psychobilly/punk trio The Gutter Demons will make their way to The Algonquin Pub for a headlining concert on Monday, May 1st! It's been too long since the last psychobilly headliners in the Soo, but The Gutter Demons will help fill the void with their creative fusion sound, as seen during numerous live concerts over the past 15 years, so prepare as they tear up a local stage in three weeks time! The local openers will notably both feature guitarist Jesse Cook and bassist James White, with their new punk/alt-rock trio Handsome Sandwich rocking out in their second live concert appearance and Algonquin debut. If you missed their debut at LopLops in February, keep this show in mind, especially as this uniquely named band has yet to post media of their sound! The advertised opening band are local funk/hard rock favourites The Elements in their first concert set of the year, so if you've been waiting patiently since Toystock, here's your next chance!

Promoted by Jack Spades frontman J.D. Pearce in his first announced concert of the year (nice to see him book his old bandmates as openers!), this show has a 19+ age limit, $10 cover charge, and 9:00 PM start time. Fans of punk, alternative, and psychobilly would be well served to check out this show at the beginning of next month, despite it's unfortunate Monday scheduling, so check the official Facebook event page for more details!

Next up, local party hard rock trio Stiffler's Mom will return to The Esquire Club for shows on Friday, June 9th and Saturday, June 10th! Announced with unusually long notice, these actually come from a concert calendar shared on the venue's Facebook page for shows in the second quarter of 2017, presumably also distributed in person at the venue, so if you're curious as to who's playing there through the end of June, give it a look! We'll likely see Stiffler's Mom elsewhere before June, but this will mark the guys' first concert weekend at this west end venue since December, and just their second weekend there in the past year. Greg, Mike, and Jon should be in their usual fine forms come June, so don't miss their fan favourite covers then at The Esquire Club! As usual, expect 10:00 PM-ish start times, no announced cover charges, and 19+ age limits for both nights. Visit the above links for more info!

And yes, I am aware of Mourning Wood concerts being listed on the above calendar, but given their teased assimilation into their newer Soundcheck project "very soon", I am waiting for public confirmation regarding whether these shows are now Soundcheck concerts, or if they're using the Mourning Wood name in transition. Stay tuned!

Closing with some new videos, remember how local alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback were interviewed by Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie prior to their headlining set at the January Jam at The Canadian? Well, it has finally aired on channel 10 and was posted to Shaw TV's YouTube channel last week, so what should you know? Aired as part of Shaw's "Community Producers" program and produced specifically by frontman Larry Babic, this features all four band members passing the mics to talk about their inception, original material, songwriting, and more, complete with on-screen graphics to credit band members, though they misspelled guitarist Chris Nielsen's last name. The interview is also interspersed with concert footage from A Dire Setback's set at the January Jam (as seen in full at this link), though we await Shaw TV's premiere of their footage from last month's March Mash-Up concert, which A Dire Setback headlined.

The interview proper isn't too long, but it's a fun and light way to introduce casual fans to A Dire Setback, who are on the fast track locally, and given their hints in the interview towards future recording sessions, hopefully they keep on their current trajectory in the local scene! Give their Shaw TV interview a look below, and stay tuned for more from their camp!

Finally, here's a new YouTube video featuring Sault Michigan classical metal project Theatre of Night, as set to footage of the video game Elite: Dangerous! Uploaded to the band's YouTube channel on Saturday, this is of a new 7 minute long demo instrumental named "3303". The song is appropriately epic for the space adventure setting of the game footage, giving things a suspenseful and grandiose feel without getting boring, and hopefully Theatre of Night can build on this with some more orchestral metal epics soon! Give it a look below, and see above for links regarding the game!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates as the week rolls along. Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Nebraska Arms

A new news post is coming, I promise, but first, here's this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! Our monthly spotlight of one or two randomly chosen defunct or inactive local bands takes us to one Sault Ontario punk band once again, keeping with a recent trend for our selections from this side of the border (we haven't had a solo profile of one Sault Ontario hard rock or metal band since August.) That said, this band burned bright during their local run, so here's what you should know on them!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nebraska Arms

Genre: Alternative Punk/Indie

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members:

Guy Thiffault (The Hangdowns, The Business Suit Trappers), vocals/bass
Wayne Watkins (Northwest, The Small Town Rivals), guitar
Dave Prendergast (Gilmour, The Mark Rand Band), guitar
Adam Sauve (Talk Shit, Renderware), drums

Audio/Video: Nebraska Arms released one CD during their original run, 2009's "We'll Never Sleep Again", which is unavailable in full online, but their their Sonicbids and MySpace pages feature material from the album. Three years after the band fell inactive, they also put out a self-titled digital EP on Bandcamp featuring 5 songs that re-released some material from "W.N.S.A.", though not all of them made the cut in 2013. For videos, there are scattered YouTube channels with footage of Nebraska Arms in action during their heyday, though none have a huge amount on their own. Here's a music video for their original song "I Was A Writer"!

Info/Analysis: Spiritual successors to the earlier alt-metal quartet Renderware, Nebraska Arms rose to become one of the most prominent local punk bands of the late 2000s. After playing their first major concerts in the fall of 2008, the band soon became a frequent sight on local stages, opening for bands like SNFU, The Flatliners, and The Artist Life during their active run. Their later months saw some battle of the bands success as well, with Nebraska Arms making the finals of 2009's Kiss Battle of the Bands and finishing in second at 2010's Sault College Battle. After falling inactive in mid-2010, the band held a one-off reunion following the sudden passing of frontman Guy Thiffault in December 2016, playing a short set at Guy's tribute show at The Rockstar Bar alongside guest bassist Mark Rand. Though their active run wasn't especially long, Nebraska Arms rightfully attracted a solid following with their energetic and catchy originals helping them stand out in the local scene!

Fans of the modern day A Dire Setback will be right at home with Nebraska Arms' up-tempo punk originals like "Lighthouses" and "Art of Science", with Guy's soaring vocals complimenting Wayne & Dave's solid guitar melodies, though some songs could sound a little similar to each other. Definitely check out Nebraska Arms for more from their eventful local run, as well as members' later bands like Northwest and The Business Suit Trappers!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! Next month in this series, our random selection will fittingly take us to the band that headlined the aforementioned Guy Thiffault tribute concert, namely local punk cover supergroup Bin Hawdon & The Taliband! Their choice was 100% random, but it is a very interesting coincidence, so look for that on or around May 10th, and stay tuned for more news this week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Project 906), More Weekend Concert Previews, And Much More!!

As promised, let's round out this weekend's concert previews today, but to complete a full post, we also have some assorted recent notes, and to lead off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you need to know!

Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Project 906 will return to The Strongs Tavern in Eckerman for one night only on Saturday, April 15th! Announced with just enough notice for us to plug this before next week's concert previews, this will mark this talented band's first show out in the Strongs area of 2017, and will see the guys return to the stage after taking this weekend off. Project 906 have been a steady sight in the past year+, and it's nice to see them bring some familiar hard rock out to Eckerman again next week, so don't miss out on this show if you're in that area! A 9:00 PM start time is advertised for this 21+ concert, and there are no announced cover charges. For more details in advance of next weekend's concert previews, visit the official Facebook event page, and stay tuned for more from Project 906 soon!

Next up, let's finish this weekend's publically known hard rock concert previews, starting with the return of Toronto-based AC/DC tribute band Who Made Who to The Rockstar Bar for one night only TONIGHT! After over 2 years away from the local stage, this veteran tribute act will deliver some high voltage rock 'n roll for the first time in the Soo since November 2014, so if you've missed Who Made Who's faithful looking and sounding take on AC/DC, don't miss out tonight at The Rockstar Bar! Note that Who Made Who are not the AC/DC tribute band that dropped out of two Rockstar Bar dates last year, that band is Hells Bells, who have yet to reschedule from their most recent postponement. Tickets are reportedly almost sold out for tonight's concert, but as of this writing, you can still get them for $10 at The Algonquin Hotel's front desk, and no word on if door admission (if possible) would be higher. This is a 19+ event starting at 9:00 PM, so visit the Facebook event page for more details, and here's Who Made Who live!

Lastly for this weekend's concert previews, we'll head back to Michigan for the return of Traverse City classic metal trio Peril to The Northern Pines Lounge at The Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Continuing their more selective concert schedule of recent years (sticking primarily to Kewadin branches and The Sportsman Bar in Boyne City), these will be Jeff, Adam, and Brooks' first gigs under the Peril banner since rocking St. Ignace two months ago, as part of what's largely been a bi-monthly schedule of late. Scarkazm has been much of the focus lately, but don't miss out on Peril's hard hitting and fan favourite covers tonight or tomorrow either, especially if you want some live hard rock action in the E.U.P. this weekend! As usual, you can catch Peril's Northern Pines Lounge gigs at 9:00 PM both nights, these are 21+ events, and neither has an announced cover charge. Check the above links for more details, and here's Peril live!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band, event, or company name:

  • We have added Mike McWatters Photography to our listings of local band and concert photographers in the Sault Ste. Marie area, as Mike has uploaded a number of photos from The Din's CD release concert last summer to his new Facebook page, and had been plugging The Din's involvement in the postponed Quiet Riot show (would he have been on hand?) Mike got some very nice shots at The Tech in August, so give them a look at the above links, and hopefully we'll see him back at more concerts!
  • A Facebook page has been launched that hints at plans to host a concert festival at The Machine Shop on Sunday, June 18th named the Rock The Border Music Fest, with the announcement of "a music lineup like no other" scheduled for April 18th. Though not explicitly stated there, the festival's listed phone number is also given on pages for Sudbury promoters CSA International, so is this an expanded rescheduling of the Quiet Riot concert, or something completely different? Stay tuned for updates when they come in!
  • Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will take a road trip east to Spanish TOMORROW to compete at this year's Rock 'N Roar Battle of the Bands, joining 9 other bands competing for 4 spots at the annual concert festival in August, where they would open for either The Killer Dwarfs or Triumph guitarist Rik Emmett. Soundcheck are the first local band to compete in this battle since The Elements in 2015, and this will give drummer Steven Flint another chance at advancing to the festival proper, having placed with The Suicide Kings in 2014. Best of luck in Spanish tomorrow!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates this weekend! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Tym Morrison & Soundcheck), A New Band/Merger, And Weekend Concert Previews!!

We're back after a few slow days to cover this weekend's concert previews, including some LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (some on SHORT NOTICE), but with recent major news regarding an apparent band merger and the new Facebook page for one of those bands, we're saving our previews of tomorrow's Who Made Who concert and this weekend's Peril shows in St. Ignace for our next post, be that tonight or tomorrow morning, so look for them then! Now, let's begin this post with the first of this weekend's concert previews, and that new band!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will return to The Rednecks Saloon for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT, and they finally have a Facebook page to boot! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only just announced early this morning via it's Facebook event page. Five months after making their public concert debut at the former Nicolet Tavern, the former Nameus finally have an online page to promote themselves and concerts with, which is great to see, but what do we know now? On Soundcheck's page, they describe themselves as "a new local '80s retro & hairspray cover band" and a "party like hell band", so if there were any fears about not fitting the SMS, hopefully this assuaged them! In terms of lineup, they feature former Carbon Black bandmates Travis Sharpe (Havadder) and Terry Eaton each on vocals & guitar, alongside Terry's Mourning Wood bandmates Steven Flint on drums and (in a new lineup announcement) Paul Belair on bass, replacing Robin "Bones" Lee.

According to Soundcheck's Facebook page's biography, Robin left the band "to take care of his health and well being", after having spent less than a month with the group. Best of luck to Bones, hopefully it's nothing too serious that he's dealing with, and hopefully we see him back on stage soon! Now, given that Soundcheck's lineup currently features 3/4ths of Mourning Wood's most recent lineup, you would be right to assume that there is something afoot with that band's active status, as Mourning Wood's Facebook page newly confirms that they are "going to be amalgamating very soon" with Soundcheck, though they oddly note that they're playing the "same music", and that "a new member is joining the band", presumably meaning Travis, who wasn't in Mourning Wood. My first instinct is that Soundcheck are simply adding Paul on bass and taking on Mourning Wood's bookings going forward, which include two upcoming weekends at The Esquire Club in a few weeks, more on them in the near future.

Does the merger happening "very soon" mean that Mourning Wood gigs will continue in the short term beforehand? Does the "same music" reference mean country covers are being added to Soundcheck sets? Stay tuned for updates, but in any event, TOMORROW NIGHT'S show at Rednecks has no cover charge, a 19+ age limit, and a 10:00 PM start time. Check the above links for more on this concert, Soundcheck proper, and the merger, hopefully public videos finally start turning up, and Soundcheck are now in our active band links! We won't move Mourning Wood to our inactive links until we're certain that Soundcheck have taken over all of their future activity.

Next up, and with April now well and fully in progress, let's add prolific hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison's slate of solo concerts at Gliss Steak & Seafood this month to our concert listings, including shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY, plus a bonus return to The Roadhouse Bar & Grill TOMORROW NIGHT! Apologies again for the short notice on this weekend's three shows, all were only announced by Tym earlier this week via their respective Facebook event pages (linked here & here.) Tym's usual Gliss matinees are continuing their march forward into the spring, with TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S shows joined by expected solo gigs on April 14th & 15th, 21st & 22nd, and 28th & 29th, so look for more unplugged hard rock classics at this downtown restaurant over the coming four weekends! As for TOMORROW NIGHT'S Roadhouse show, this marks Tym's first appearance at the Trunk Road venue of the year, and if you've missed him at this venue, don't bypass this show either!

As usual for Tym's Gliss shows this month, expect 6:00 PM start times and no announced cover or age limit (but remember where these are being held), while TOMORROW'S Roadhouse concert has a more typical 19+ age limit, 10:00 PM start time, and no cover. Check the above links for more details, and here's Tym live in concert a few years back!

Finally for today's concert preview post, here's a special Thursday night concert going down TONIGHT at The New American Pub, as Toronto hard rock quartet Return For Refund will make their local concert debut! Touring in support of their newly released studio album "Lift You Up", this talented band will definitely intrigue many fans with their 1990s-inspired blend of alternative rock styles, throwing in some grunge and blues influences for good measure, and they should attract a solid base of fans when they rock The New A tonight! Fast-rising local alt-punk quartet A Dire Setback will open as expected, but there has been a lineup change, as it was confirmed two weeks ago that blues/hard rock trio Electric Church have replaced pop rock artist Mike Mikus as the show's first act (apologies for the delay in noting this on the site, it slipped us by last month.) A reason for Mike's withdrawal wasn't announced, but hopefully nothing bad happened, and it will be neat to see Electric Church take on The New A for the first time tonight!

Apparently promoted by the venue proper (it is not Live705 affiliated beyond A Dire Setback's set), this show has a 9:00 PM start time, $5 cover charge, and 19+ age limit. This should be a solid night of hard and alternative rock originals, so definitely consider a trip to The New A tonight, check the official Facebook event page for updates, and here's Return For Refund live!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for our Who Made Who & Peril previews, and more, next! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? April 2017 Update

At last, here's this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! Our monthly spotlight of the current release statuses and whereabouts of albums from local metal, hard rock, and/or punk bands takes us to familiar territory, with mostly the same content from last month, but there is one newly added album, and two with updates, so they are noted with their title in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Apocalypse Afterparty - Bufflesnort

Rumoured Songs: "4th Liner", ".500 Hockey", "Lace 'Em Up", "Better Than The Hives Did It" (retitled cover of Saul Williams' "List of Demands (Reparations)"

Background: Before ever playing a public concert, local rap/metal band The Apocalypse Afterparty announced on their Facebook page in 2014 that they had begun working on a 3 song debut EP with producer Jamie Vincent, recording at least one song with him ("The Crowd"), which you can hear in full at this link. Plans were overhauled after holding full recording sessions for "Bufflesnort" at Tidal Records' own Mission Control Studios with producer Dustin Jones, later mixing the songs with Simon Head at Insight Recorders, and notably not recording prior originals from concerts like songs passed on from The Fury. The full EP can now be streamed via "songwriter" Paul Stanghetta's YouTube channel, while all five album covers can be seen on the band's online pages. Also, a posting last spring hinted that a member of defunct Saskatchewan hardcore band The Holly Springs Disaster would make a cameo appearance on a track.

Current Release Status: The Apocalypse Afterparty began sending out press packs & advance copies of the album on cell phones in September (I received one in a concert used drum), and the band also plans to have full availability for general audiences via digital download and USB thumb drives, but a planned February release never occurred. A contest was being held on their Facebook page earlier this year to win the first release copy of "Bufflesnort", but if a winner was declared, the band hasn't publically noted them. Also, they were undergoing yet another drummer search, and "songwriters" have been focusing on their new side project The Noochy Lanterns lately as well. In any event, stay tuned for updates on "Bufflesnort"!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bear Hunters - The Dead Testament

Rumoured Songs: "The Void", "The Omen", "Neckbreaker", "I Fear No God", "Servitude", "Transcend Judgement", "For Glory", "The Wrath Of Angmar", "The Dying Den", "The Dead Testament", "Deception" (bonus re-recording), "The Forest of Forests" (bonus track)

Background: In tentative planning since 2014 under this title, local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters have been playing songs intended for their second full length CD for a few years now, but only fully began recording sessions for "The Dead Testament" on October 2nd, 2015. Following a brief fundraising campaign and the gradual unveiling of song titles, the band have been working with producer Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios, and have shared sporadic updates on their Instagram page. Like on 2014's "Eternal Hibernation", rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney has recorded parts for the album despite living in Southern Ontario, but it's not yet clear on how bonus tracks will be handled.

Current Release Status: The Bear Hunters haven't given any firm timetables for when to expect "The Dead Testament" in stores, but as of November 5th, the band had finished all recording sessions except vocals & lead guitar for 4 tracks, and "finishing touches" were to blame for the delays in finishing the CD. The band is aiming for a more professional sound and release for their sophomore effort, but an optimistic late-summer release has came and gone, and the band has not issued a public update in five months. Keep an eye out for updates when and if they come in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Elements' debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Liar", "G20", "Triple H", "The Rut", "I Need A Friend"

Background: Arguably better known for their funk, ska, and hard rock covers, local quartet The Elements have been adding original material to their sets since last year, and have since publically confirmed earlier teases that they are working on a debut EP. Frontman Rob Speers has confirmed in personal conversations that they have been working in studio on the release, which will have at least 5 tracks, and I believe it's being self-recorded, but further public updates are minimal at best. It's also not known if they'll employ any guest performers, such as drummer Jonas Gasperas and saxophonist Josh Norling, who have been frequent presences in recent months, and may be official band members at this point.

Current Release Status: At this stage, I have no idea, but Rob sounded like things were going well in studio, so we'll have to see what comes out next on The Elements' first EP!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Id Iota's full length second CD

Rumoured Songs: "Happy Sailor", "Intro To American Literature", "Seas Envy Skies"

Background: Not long after their successful Ontario tour with Mike Mikus last fall, Id Iota began recording sessions for their second album, though public confirmation that a full length CD was currently in progress didn't occur until guitarist Dustin Goodall announced it on his studio Unsalted Audio's website earlier this year. Scattered postings and hints have followed, including teases of their own Ontario tour next month (source here), but nothing else has came out beyond performances of newer originals in concert. For reference, this photo got shared a few times on Id Iota's Facebook page last year, but it's unclear if it's intended to be the album's cover artwork or not.

Current Release Status: No idea, especially with the alternative/hard rock quartet keeping fairly mum on it's progress, but if the plan is still to go on tour next month, this album could be coming sooner than you think! Keep watch for updates as they roll in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Haggith - Neighbourhood Watch Revisited

Rumoured Songs: "To Whom This May Concern", "Room 822", "The Ballad of K2/K3", "The Day The Lights Went Out", "Limb Coast", "Leon the Janitor", "Far Too Long"

Background: After previously hinting at a re-recorded version of his 45th solo album "Neighbourhood Watch" in late 2015, local solo musician Mike Haggith officially began releasing new versions of songs from the original 2012 CD onto his YouTube channel in February, those being of "Limb Coast" & "Room 822". His planned first full solo release of new recordings since mid-2015's "The Warinside", "Neighbourhood Watch Revisited" was being recorded at PaperClip Productions, with Mike being joined on at least some songs by Din bandmate Brandan Glew on drums and ex-Din/Haggith bandmate Curtis McKenzie on guitar.

Current Release Status: With The Din becoming more and more popular locally, that band has understandably taken up Mike's focus in the past year, and he even confirmed on his Facebook page last spring that this album "isn't even a priority" right now. That leaves things in limbo at best, but at last word, Curtis revealed in this video that it's "steadily nearing the completion stage", so might things be mostly ready for when/if production is resumed? Follow above for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Vincent's debut EP & "We're of Nothing"

Rumoured Songs (1): "Shoah" (retitled Skull After Betrayl cover), "Sacred Sins", "Six, Six, Six", "Systematical Satan", "Soulless Sanctuary", "Screaming Serenity"

Rumoured Songs (W): "Times Of The Unforgotten", "Chapters of No Light", "We're of Nothing", "Phases of Pain"

Background: After briefly manning his own solo project in 2011 (which featured original songs named after food), ex-Skull After Betrayl frontman Mike Vincent resurrected his dormant solo project this past summer via his new Bandcamp page. Mike soon posted a series of six instrumentals there, all with titles starting with the letter S, which are planned to constitute his debut EP when finished with vocals. Mike followed up later with four unrelated songs that are planned for his second solo release, which would be a double CD album in length, with "Times of the Unforgotten" notably featuring his uncle Jason Ladouceur (ex-Winkstinger) in a guest spot. Some of the above information comes from personal Facebook page postings, as Mike hasn't made a new music page for his solo project yet.

Current Release Status: No idea, but given that he's posting songs on Bandcamp, a digital release through there seems likely when the songs are 100% completed and packaged as an album, at least in that form. Mike's past local bands haven't quite gotten off the ground in terms of putting out albums, but for fans of Skull After Betrayl, D.O.T.H., and so on, Mike's solo project should be very intriguing, and he's putting in some solid work in the process! Keep tabs on his Bandcamp page for further material!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Redundant's debut CD

Rumoured Songs: "Miles Apart", "That December", "What You'll Do"

Background: Over two and a half years after their last documented studio sessions in the spring of 2012, local punk trio Redundant revealed on their Facebook page in November 2014 that they were finally working on finishing their debut CD, and will look to hold a CD release party for it upon it's completion. Details are otherwise minimal, including on if the guys will just package their older studio work for the release, or include new recordings, perhaps at bassist James White's studio White Wreckords. We'll keep you posted if we hear more!

Current Release Status: Though we don't know much on the new/revived album plans, Redundant did sound serious about completing their CD. That said, Redundant have only played a handful of times in the last couple of years, and haven't made any public statements regarding the album since 2014. The band did resume public activity in March 2016, announcing that they were writing new songs and working on "new studio shit", but it's not clear how earlier album sessions would play in. If we hear any updates, we'll be sure to let you know!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Skeyes of Seven - Stare at the Sky

Rumoured Songs: "Enough", "See The Truth", "Fallen Faith", "Pretend", "Cognitive Dissonance", "Crawling Back From Reality"

Background: Already no strangers to the studio after recording two songs as singles in the mid-2010s, local modern hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven hit the studio to record their debut EP in 2015, though they only publically confirmed that an EP was in the works last January. Sessions took place at Deluca Sound Productions, who have shared videos of band members tracking material for the EP, and ex-drummer John Mignacca did record tracks for the release before moving to Sudbury. The EP title was unveiled last fall, and then last month, all six songs were posted to their YouTube channel, including the new instrumental "Crawling Back From Reality", while also excluding their older originals "Destination Unknown" & "No One Cares". New guitarist Kyle Sweet is not visibly on the EP, having joined Skeyes of Seven after sessions concluded.

Current Release Status: Given that the whole EP is online for free streaming, then conventional wisdom would say that "Stare at the Sky" would be released imminently, but the band has yet to confirm a paid release date, or even a live concert return. Hopefully it doesn't stall at being a free posting, as Skeyes of Seven are a talented and experienced band, and having been active in studio more than on stage since launching in 2012, it'd be great to see them culminate this process with a release concert. Follow along to see where things go for their debut EP!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Telephone & Address - "Monster" & "The Early Tapes"

Rumoured Songs (M): "I Can Bleed"

Rumoured Songs (E): "The Plumbers"

Background: Telephone & Address mainman Chris Shoust announced on their Facebook page in 2015 that he was working on releasing "The Early Tapes", a compilation of songs from the first 4 Telephone & Address albums (2011's self titled album, and 2012's "Live", "No. 3", and "Broken Head"). Since then however, he revealed that a separate new album named "Monster" is done, with an advanced copy leaked to him by AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent, which likely hints that Jamie helped produce it. However, a later-recorded album, "Are You Now or Have You Ever", was officially released in October, despite "Monster" being announced a year previously. Songs from both of these unreleased albums can be streamed on their Soundcloud page, and they're likely to turn up on Telephone & Address' Bandcamp page and on Interpunk down the road.

Current Release Status: Chris has indicated online that "Monster" was planned to be pressed in the fall of 2015, blaming money issues for the delays in it being released, and while a November 2016 release date was teased last fall, that has came & went too. We're likely nearing it's release at some point in 2017 though! Regarding the "The Early Tapes", Chris revealed in March 2015 that it "will be delayed for some time", though he didn't elaborate on why specifically. Assuming things go according to plan, Telephone & Address should have some big albums in the works, so we'll keep you posted when more on any of these comes out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! We'll return with this month's Defunct Local Band Profile next week, but stay tuned for more news in the interim! Thanks everyone!

Nothern Lights Festival Boreal Meltdown Review & Results!!

Hey everyone, here's my review of last night's Northern Lights Festival Boreal Meltdown audition/battle of the bands at LopLops Lounge! I haven't missed attending a judged local battle of the bands since the Algoma University Battle in late 2009, so even with late lineup notice, how could I resist? Of course, this event was held and designed by organizers of the NLFB, which is the annual folk/indie music festival in Sudbury each July, which has been going on since 1972, so you know this is a big and established deal. Festival staff were on hand to promote the NLFB, sell tickets, seek volunteers, and sign up attendees on their mailing list (complete with a raffle for festival passes), and hopefully this western outreach pays off come July! Even Sudbury's own Stack Brewery was on hand to dole out beverages for the night. Judging the battle were SooToday's Donna Hopper alongside NLFB executive director Max Merrifield (who MCed the Meltdown), outreach coordinator Krisha Patel, and marketing coordinator Shawn Kosmerly, plus Sudbury music scene veteran Darlene DarlenYa.

Before we begin our review of the performers, just a heads up that one previously announced band dropped out of the event, they being progressive rock veterans Machines Dream, the advertised closing act. The band cited "unforeseen circumstances" for their withdrawal, as per their Facebook page, and though they didn't elaborate further, note that they have been focusing on studio work since their Rotaryfest set last summer, and don't appear to be playing live until their teased CD release party later this year. It's still disappointing to see them drop out, but hopefully Machines Dream are back with a vengeance soon!

Performers only had 15-20 minute sets, so as bands averaged around 4 songs each, apologies if I seem to sum things up quickly. The opening act at the Meltdown was local folk singer/guitarist M.D. Dunn in a rare appearance at a local battle-formatted event from a solo performer. He played a short 3 song set, including originals named "Master of Doubt" and "Solace", plus an instrumental titled "Barnswallowing", and while his style isn't something I hear a lot of, his singing was pleasant and melodic, and he is a solid guitarist in this more reserved, laid back style! I wish he had played longer though, as all of the other bands played at least one more song, and none of them had an instrumental. Next up was alternative/hard rockers Id Iota (the only quartet of the night, believe it or not), and they powered through a 4 (well, sort of 5) song set of newer originals like "Happy Sailor" that got early fans moving!

Their first song had a definite late era-Chili Peppers vibe, while their second song was much faster and heavier, but I wish they announced song names a little more. Christian Lemay handled vocals and the melodica with ease, and everyone had good energy, especially bassist Dan Linklater. Good stuff all around, and it'll be interesting to hear how things shape up for their forthcoming full length CD! Third last night was local pop rock singer/guitarist Mike Mikus, in the first time I've seen his current solo project live, so what can I say? Well, in terms of his backing band, it was a surprise throwback to his old deal's final lineup, as he's replaced drummer Mitchell Harris with Pixo Control bandmate Keeghan Rosso, which was a nice surprise! Nothing bad happened with Mike and Mitch, as you'll see later in the review. Mike and crew (including Id Iota's Dustin Goodall) played a four song set included his debut solo original "Drowning Crown" and three more newer originals.

The latter two had more of an alternative/indie essence, but the second song (possibly titled "Electric Kiss"?) sounded like a Pixo Control outtake, with a very heavy and fast structure, which was really cool to see! I can't say whether Mike is trying to find his solo sound, or if he's intentionally varying things in his current music, but there was a little of everything, and hopefully he keeps at it in 2017! After a 10 minute break (the Meltdown was running ahead of schedule), newer local indie rock trio The Autumn Roots hit the stage in their LopLops debut, where they played a 5 song set including such originals as "Moon Song", "The North", and "Falling Down". A drummer wouldn't come amiss for their quickly expanding slate of material, but The Autumn Roots had a solid set, with Jeremy Hannah's melodic vocals fitting their songs well, and he and Chase Wigmore have a good rapport on guitar! Chase was really getting into it during their set, almost as if there was a metal show going on in his head.

Greg "Carlos" Carscadden needs to be more animated on stage, but overall, The Autumn Roots have a good thing going for their sound, and it'll be interesting to see how things shape up for them as this year rolls along! Local alternative/hard rock trio The Din hit the stage next, looking for their first battle of the bands victory in their fifth try, and they delivered an entertaining four song set including "High Park", "35s The Limit', and "Potato (Should Have Known Better)", with all but the latter expected for their next album. I've seen The Din a lot lately, so I don't have a lot to add (especially with their short set), but they played to their standards, with Tammy Hill's guitar work on point, and Brandan Glew kept the rhythm going well on drums, but be sure to check out The Din at upcoming shows when they're not as time-limited! The audition closed with local folk artist and Ears & Eyes promoter Jackson Reed playing a solo set, as joined by Mike Mikus on bass and his former solo and Fever Tops bandmate Mitchell Harris on drums.

Jackson and crew played a 4 song set largely culled from his "November Gales" cassette EP from last fall, including "Generation Vietnam" and "Welcome Home". I'd never seen Jackson perform live before last night, and if I had to compare his sound to anyone, I sort of got hints of Bob Dylan and Randy Newman from his sincere folksy originals, though he could stand to be a little more confident on stage. Mike's backing vocals could be a little distracting, but overall, Jackson has a good thing going for his genres, and ended the Meltdown in fine form! Afterwards, judges deliberated the winner, and when Max came back to the stage to make the announcement, he did acknowledge that this was a very tough decision, and it was like comparing apples & oranges. With all of that said, who won The Northern Lights Festival Boreal's first ever Sault Ste. Marie audition?

M.D. DUNN! Yes, Mark D. Dunn has claimed the surprise victory in the Meltdown, and has won the all expenses paid trip to Sudbury in July to play at this year's NLFB, as well as opportunities to participate in musical mentorship programs that same weekend. Congratulations to Mark on his victory, he's a talented veteran presence in the local music scene, and this is a nice feather in his cap, so hopefully he makes lots of fans out east! On the surface, this is an upset win given that he had no backing band, played first, and only played three songs, but his talents are clear as day, and Max did note in his introduction that the judging critera also included suitability for the festival lineup. Given their usual genre range, M.D. is a very good fit for the NLFB, and should fit in very well! Runner-up placements were not publically announced, nor were prizes for second place and beyond, but hopefully second place is considered if there's a vacancy at some stage!

For what it's worth, pre-audition advertising noted that there would be two winners in solo and band categories, but that was not the case, possibly as M.D. Dunn was the only true solo performer on the bill (Mike and Jackson had backing bassists and drummers with them.)

Kudos to everyone on strong performances last night, and the turnout was solid too, despite the relatively late notice on the competing bands! After the battle, Id Iota and Mike Mikus played bonus sets, but I couldn't stay for them, though I hope they continued to rock the lounge as well as they did during the battle proper! Surprisingly, this was the first local battle of the bands with judges where I was just a spectator since Downtown Showdown in 2010, so I was in full reviewer/photographer mode, and you can check out my shots from the Meltdown at this link or via our Facebook page! As for videos, I got everyone's first song, so here's M.D. Dunn playing his song "Master of Doubt", Id Iota playing "Intro To American Literature", Mike Mikus playing "Drowning Crown", The Autumn Roots playing "Rock Bottom", The Din playing "Suburban Dream", and Jackson Reed playing "Generation Vietnam"!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Id Iota), AlgomA/Pillory Concert Videos, And More!!

Before we kick off our April Fools prank-free news post, just a heads up that the postponed Quiet Riot concert at The Machine Shop is not taking place on May 25th as originally stated yesterday. SooToday and varying social media postings now state that the show is postponed "until a later date", complete with the deletion of the show's Facebook event page, and refunds are available at point of purchase. I know that a lot of pessimism and sarcasm floating around online either regarding the promoters or Quiet Riot themselves, but hopefully things work themselves out so this concert gets rescheduled in some form down the road!

Now, we have some new concert videos, recent assorted updates, and first, a delayed LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as local alternative hard rock quartet Id Iota will rock The New American Pub on Monday, April 17th for an Easter Monday concert where they'll open for Calgary psychedelic pop band Windigo & New Jersey surf rock quartet Dentist! Just a few days removed from opening for K.I.C.K. at LopLops on Good Friday, this talented quartet will continue their upward momentum with another set where you're sure to hear some material from their forthcoming second CD, so keep them in mind! Though the touring acts don't largely fall into our general coverage range, Windigo's alt-pop originals should appeal to genre fans, and Dentist harbour some punk influences on some of their own surf rock material, so don't bypass either on this late stop on their spring tour of Canada! Note that Windigo's concert calendar says this show is being held at The Gore Street Cafe, but I never saw reference to the laundromat elsewhere, so it likely changed before it's local advertising began.

Though the Facebook event page was launched by Id Iota, seemingly implying it's self-promoted, they give "special thanks" to Six, Two, Oh. & Ears and Eyes, so there is at least some assistance from those two agencies. This 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time, so check the above links for more details, and if you love indie rock with some heavier tinges, be at The New A on Easter Monday!

Next up, we have some new videos from Thursday night's AlgomA-headlined concert at The New American Pub, courtesy of Christopher Paci's YouTube channel once again, in his first concert video postings since the Pop Evil show in February. Kudos to him for getting some more solid footage, it's always welcomed when he breaks out his camera! Before we touch on AlgomA's video, just a note that the band has finally unveiled their tour schedule for their European debut, which will see them play largely in Germany over a two week span starting on Tuesday, all alongside German sludge punk duo WeedWolf, though Swiss and Dutch gigs are also listed. Obviously, this is a huge opportunity to spread the Northern Ontario doom metal gospel overseas, so hopefully things work our well this month! Chris' video of AlgomA's New A set from Thursday is of their song "Phthisis" from last year's split with Chronobot, and it's a suitably ferocious rendition of one of their shorter songs, so give it a look below, and good luck on tour, show Europe what the Soo can do!

Chris didn't film late-added opener Chase Wigmore, but he did film local death metal trio Pillory playing their original "Wasting" on Thursday night, and while it captures the guys in suitably brutal form, the camera angle is worse. On the AlgomA video, Chris was more or less front & center to film them, but I think he remained at a table for Pillory, and the angle made it so the far left of the video is obscured by a wall, partially cutting frontman Robert Sartini from view early on. Still a quality look at this resurgent local metal band, so give their clip a look below as well!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • I have moved local metal cover trio Caveman Morrison back to our inactive band links, as they have not made a public update since their return show at The Rednecks Saloon's relaunch party one year ago tomorrow. It was great to see the guys back after a 2+ year hiatus, but that now appears to have been a one-off set, especially thanks to frontman Tym Morrison's busy weekly schedule of solo concerts. Don't miss Tym at Gliss and/or the Barrelhouse this year, or James White & Johnny Belanger with Handsome Sandwich and their other separate projects!
  • Local punk/metal band Jack Spades' new lineup will hit the road for a return to the annual Spiderfest in Meyersburg on Friday, July 14th, where they'll open for 2013 local concert headliners The Bunchofuckingoofs. Hopefully this continues the band's momentum following June's CKY show, and good luck on the road this summer! For reference, the band teased a staggered reveal of their new lineup on their Facebook page starting last week, but nothing has been posted to confirm new or returning members since then.
  • New local power pop/hard rock band The Noochy Lanterns have added Crucify the Whore's Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson to their lineup on guitar, making them a quartet (for now), as per their Facebook page last week. This is a departure from Tyler's usual grindcore & death metal base, but the band indicated that they may be even heavier with him enlisted, and they've also teased a planned addition of a female synth player to their lineup, identity not publically known yet. Don't miss The Noochy Lanterns' public concert debut at The Rockstar Bar on April 15th for Live705's Easter Bash!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post tomorrow! Thanks everyone!
