Archelon/Doors & Fours Concert Review!!

After a delay due to personal commitments, here's our review of Saturday night's Archelon/Doors & Fours concert at The Rockstar Bar! Nice to finally get back out to a show after a little too long, but unfortunately, the crowd was only about medium capacity. The fans that did make it out were vocal and invested, however, and by the end of the night, the floor was getting reasonably packed, which was nice to see! Now, onto the bands!

Opening this show were the debuting Re:Born, the new power rock quintet from Project 421, Eclipse, and Din alumni, so how'd they sound for their first public outing? So far, so good, in my opinion! Playing a set familiar to 421 diehards with originals like "No One Rides For Free" & "Into The Darkness" joining Iron Maiden and Diamond Head renditions, this new band also broke out a few new covers not done by the old band, including some AC/DC and Scorpions classics. Of course, Blair Burch and Frank McGillivray's pre-existing chemistry was on full display, Fred Dunn's bass work fit in well, and Brandan Glew's acclimiating nicely to this heavier sound (though the bass drum could be a little loud.) The great unknown here was with singer Robert Nevitt, who was making his debut in any band on Saturday, and while he needs to engage wit the crowd a little more and loosen up a bit, his voice is solid! I can see him handling hair metal covers with ease, and while I don't expect they're going that route, Re:Born are off to a solid start!

Despite being an out of town group, Hamilton grunge/punk trio Doors & Fours played next in their local concert debut (also a makeup date of sorts after dropping out of a show here last fall), and they made up for lost time with an entertaining and heavy set! Intense is one way to describe it, with the guys staying very focused and in the groove, uttering not one word to the crowd between songs, not even to announce a title. This does create a disconnect with the fans, but at the same time, Doors & Fours definitely held fans' early attention with songs like their new single "So Hard", and with their chaotic, always-in-motion stage presence, they were hard to keep eyes off of! Frontman Adam Peach could morph from a hardcore scream to a grunge throwback style with relative ease, and Rene Thivierge and Cody McAleney were well matched rhythmically for their set! It'd be nice to see Doors & Fours give and take more with the crowd, but hopefully this isn't the only time we see them on a local concert bill!

Co-headlining on Saturday were local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades in their first public concert of 2018, and just their second show with their current lineup, and fans were treated to another entertaining, high impact set from this favourite group! Their set was mostly business as usual, with originals like "Fear Corps" and "Breakneck Speed" dotted with covers of acts like Turbonegro and The Ripcordz, but there was one new song unveiled on this night, a more upbeat punk number called "Sewer City Radio" which seemed to go over well! That song aside, there were no true "surprises", but Jack Spades delivered a quality set, with J.D. Pearce's voice on point no matter where in the venue he was (even on a chair for a stretch!) Tiffany Stocco and Johnny Belanger are fully back in the groove after coming back late last year, Daniel Horton shone on lead guitar, and Rob Speers' bass skills fit in just fine also! Here's to more planet-jacking from Jack Spades in this new year!

And finally, your headliners were Sudbury groove metal quintet Archelon in their first local concert appearance since October 2014! Compared to that Halloween themed, covers-heavy set, this fast-rising group has matured but kept a positive, face melting spirit that encouraged the most fans onto the floor of the evening, which was welcome to see at last! Playing numerous selections from their "Bound By Bloodlines" like "LifeDebt" along with non-album tracks like "Path of Darkness", the guys brutalized the Rockstar Bar stage (I'm honestly surprised this wasn't downstairs!), with their sound touching on elements of death, groove, and thrash with aplomb, and Bobby Cobras' vocals were well suited all around! Brady McCoy made good use of his beautiful Dean Razorback once again, and he was a good match with Patrick Mallette in this department too! Archelon have grown a lot since we last saw them, and hopefully they get a much better turnout when they come back!

Overall, this was a very solid concert from all four bands, and hopefully J.D. has much more in the works as the year rolls along! ou can check out our photos from Saturday night at this link or via our Facebook page, and as for videos, here's Re:Born covering Megadeth's "Reckoning Day", Doors & Fours playing "Take Your Life Away", Jack Spades playing "Sewer City Radio", and Archelon playing "Light Side" (and yes, I know that other videos from this show have been posted publically by other attendees, we will touch on them this week in upcoming posts!)

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this week! Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: The Eleventh Hour

As usual for the 10th of a month, here's our latest Defunct Local Band Profile on the site! This monthly feature spotlights one or two local bands (one this month) that, while no longer a publically functioning act, deserves a look back at their run and accomplishments! Once again, this month's band was randomly selected, and with Sault Michigan in our rotation for the first time in 2018, here's what you should know on this month's pick!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Eleventh Hour

Genre: Hardcore/Metal/Punk

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Members: (Members not in their last full lineup in italics. Note that Sean Hanson was credited as their "mascot and cowbell player" back in 2012, but I don't believe he was a formal band member as such.)

Sean Roush (Chained Memories), vocals
Josh North, guitar/formerly bass
Joseph Farrish, bass
Joseph North (7/47), drums

Gus Burgos, harsh vocals
Cathy Burgos, clean vocals/keyboard
Zach Howe, clean vocals
Cody Reed (Hoist The Sails, Analog Deficiency), guitar
Matt Randazzo, bass
Alex Boyer, bass

Audio/Video: Material on the their now-deleted first Facebook page included short song samples and vocal demos by Sean Roush, and teasers at an eventual all-original set with songs like "The Weeping Angels". After relaunching in late 2013, The Eleventh Hour announced plans to record an EP named "Eyes of the Wretched", which would have featured a song named "I Have A Voice" (lyrics even made its way to their new Facebook page), as well as later teasing a softer, punk-based cover selection in 2014 ranging from All Time Low to Paramore to Wolfmother . That said, only two songs tied to this band are known to be public nowadays: a vocal/piano selection by ex-singer Cathy Burgos from November 2013, and this scratchy but solid instrumental guitar demo by Josh North from earlier that year!

Info/Analysis: Launching under the Angelic Genocide name in February 2012 (eventually adopting their best known name that fall), The Eleventh Hour were one of the more recent ventures into extreme metal from young Sault Michigan-area performers, with brothers Josh & Joe North the only constant members. A live concert debut was never publically confirmed, and much of their later updates reflected personnel and name changes, with their lineup fluctuating from 4-6 members at varying points. The band briefly became Changing You For Better Days in early 2013, and eventually changed their name to One Hour Till Dawn in early 2014 to coincide with their shift in genre, before settling on When All Fell Silent that July. The last name was ironically apt, as no public updates followed, with the band itself falling silent for good by year's end. With only solo clips surviving from The Eleventh Hour's run, it's hard to comment on the band as a whole, but they had talented musicians and strong ambitions, and it's a shame they could never get far off the ground in the early 2010s!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! Next month in this series, we'll return to Sault Ontario for our next randomly selected profile, and for April 2018, we'll be looking at defunct local classic/hard rock quartet (and Soundcheck predecessors) Mourning Wood! Look for that at this time next month, and stay tuned for more news and notes on the site in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

Weekend Concert Previews, A New Old Treble Charger Interview, And Sault Michigan Updates!!

In what may just be the calm before the St. Patrick's Day storm, this weekend's concert previews are very slight in number, with only two batches of hard rock shows to cover this weekend that have advance notice. To fill things out, we have a new-ish radio interview with a prominent local band, and some assorted Sault Michigan stories, so here's what you should know!

We'll start today's shorter than usual batch of concert previews with the return of prolific local acoustic hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison to Gliss Steak & Seafood for another pair of unplugged gigs TONIGHT & TOMORROW! As his long-term weekly arrangement at The Quality Inn's house restaurant marches on, Tym should have another solid pair of shows in store for fans and patrons alike, so keep an eye out for his skilled blend of classic and hard rock covers over these next two evenings! Note that Tym played Gliss yesterday as well on special request (if that was a public show, our apologies for missing it), while he has also confirmed that his hosting of open mic nights at The Canadian will continue on Thursdays rather than Wednesdays starting next week through at least May 24th, so keep the date change in mind if you like open mic nights! As usual for Tym's Gliss matinees, expect a 6:00 PM start time tonight and tomorrow.

Also, remember that while there are no announced cover charges or age limits, mind the locale, this isn't a traditional nightclub venue. Visit the official Facebook event page for more on these and upcoming Tym Morrison shows at Gliss, and here he is live a few years back!

Next up, here's this weekend's only other previously announced hard rock show, and it's a big one for metal fans, as Sudbury death/thrash metal band Archelon will return to Sault Ste. Marie for a headlining date at The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! Almost 3½ years removed from their Oddfellows Hall concert on Devil's Night 2014, this show could be seen as a delayed final stop from theirs and locals Jack Spades' joint Northern Ontario tour last fall, which didn't have a Soo concert scheduled. Archelon's brutal onslaught should be welcomed back to the local stage tomorrow, so don't miss out on their original tracks then! The aforementioned Jack Spades are the advertised co-headliners in their first concert appearance of 2018, and their second since Tiffany and Johnny returned to their lineup, so look for more high impact metal-tinged punk from them! Might there be a new song to look forward to?! Hamilton punk/grunge trio Doors & Fours will also perform on Saturday in a makeup date of sorts following their drop-out of a headlining show here in November, also with Jack Spades.

No word on why they're playing between locals, but Doors & Fours old school-inspired hybrid sound should garner a solid audience of their own tomorrow night! The openers are new local power rock quintet (and Project 421 successors) Re:Born in their public concert debut, so how will Robert, Blair, Frank, Fred, and Brandan sound in their first live go-around? Find out tomorrow night! This show has a $7 cover charge, 10:00 PM start time, and 19+ age limit, and while the genres on display seem more suited for The Algonquin Pub downstairs, all advertising indicates it's upstairs. This should be a great night of metal and punk action, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Archelon live!

Also today, here's a new YouTube find for fans of local/Toronto indie punk veterans Treble Charger, namely an interview with singer/guitarist Greig Nori and then-bassist Rosie Martin on Calgary rock station CJAY 92 back in December 2000! Uploaded to YouTube user Colin MacDonald's channel yesterday, the interview was conducted by CJAY personality Stone Malone, the interview took place during Treble Charger's tour stop in Calgary on December 4th, 2000 alongside Eve 6 and Gob. In the interview, Greig and Rosie talk about how the tour is going, their beginnings as a band, their then-new album "Wide Awake Bored", working with producer Matt Hyde, tour experiences in the United States, their pinball-inspired website, their new music video for "Brand New Low", members' loves & hates, and more (Stone also throws to "Brand New Low" and "Funny", but both tracks and the commercial break are clipped out, likely for copyright reasons regarding the songs.)

Despite a 17+ year wait to see this interview come online, it's a fun listen, and both Greig and Rosie are completely at ease and having a lot of fun bantering and reminiscing with Stone (even joking that they'd be CJAY's new morning hosts), so this is definitely worth listening for Treble Charger fans! Do so below, and hopefully we hear more from Treble Charger in 2018!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, all relating to Sault Michigan in some respect! As usual, these are in alphabetical order by venue, station, or program name:

  • Classic Rock: The Bear in Cheboygan (WCHY 97.7 FM) is moving to 95.3 FM on a 5X stronger signal on Tuesday, as per their Facebook page! The move appears to involve the purchase of or trade for existing country station WWSS 95.3 FM in Tuscarora Township (which shares ownership with the Eagle classic hits stations in our market.) Though 95.3 is a much stronger signal, Tuscarora is a half hour south of Cheboygan, so how well will The Bear pick up in the Soo now, especially compared to KLT? We'll find out next week!
  • In a name change for our "Other Sault Michigan Links", I have reverted the name of Rock 101's weekday morning drive program back to Scott Cook In The Morning, following co-host Brian Davie's second departure last year. To my knowledge, an online statement wasn't made regarding his exit, but on-air promotion of the show doesn't list Brian anymore, and I haven't heard him on air in months. Hopefully nothing bad happened, it was nice to have him back!
  • A second musicians competition will be held at the Superior Cafe (inside Bird's Eye Outfitters on the former Golanka's Bar site) in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, March 27th! Ground rules are basically identical to January's competition, with gift cards awaiting the winning acts (bands and solo artists welcomed), so visit the official Facebook event page for details! For reference, 9 acts competed in January, including winning alternative quintet Midnight Logic and half of Project 906, among others.

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile next! Thanks everyone!

Updates From Project 906, Two Local Solo Artists Named Mike, And Much More!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to offer profuse apologies for a missed concert in this past weekend's concert previews, as local punk trio Redundant played what was advertised as a "surprise acoustic show" on Friday night at Room 21, only publically confirming that concert via it's Facebook event page just four hours prior to showtime. No word on if this was a late replacement gig or just wasn't advertised until that evening, but hopefully the show went well, and had we known about it in advance, we'd have previewed it here! Now, we have some updates from two local solo musicians, a Sault Michigan band, and more, so here's what you should know!

We'll start with a new concert video from Sault Michigan hard rock/blues quartet Project 906, who just took a road trip out to Hulbert Township for a rare concert there on Saturday! If you're wondering why we didn't cover it in this past weekend's concert previews, it was because Google Maps has always listed Hulbert as being a 62 minute drive from Sault Ste. Marie, just past our one hour coverage range on the SMS, but as this show's venue is listed as being a 54 minute drive from here, I will now make Hulbert Township our cutoff point going west into the Upper Peninsula. Hard rock shows there don't happen too often as it is, but we'll cover anything there that crosses our radar going forward! The show in question took place at Hulbert Happy Hour (yes, that is it's name) at 10402 South Maple Street, and the video shot here is of Project 906 covering Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4". Filmed by attendee Cindi Jenkins (a relative of guitarist Joe Jenkins), how do the guys sound here?

Pretty good, they effectively add an edge here for this song that you wouldn't expect to see on the SMS most days, and Billy Bernier's vocals are particularly strong! Dustin's often obscured from view, but this is a solid clip of Project 906's new lineup, so give it a look below, and in case they or other bands return to Hulbert, look for SMS coverage if possible!

Next up, here's the last of our backlogged news items from local hard rock solo musician Mike McCleary! Stemming from his recent public awareness movements, Mike and his wife Sara have launched a non-profit organization called We've Got This to help break the stigma surrounding mental illness, a major theme of Mike's recent social media postings and his "Weight of the Truth" album. We've Got This was recently spotlighted in this SooToday article by James Hopkin with interview remarks from both Mike & Sara (though it doesn't mention Mike's music), while a GoFundMe page has been launched to begin fundraising towards an intended awareness event with music, food, public figures, and more, with the date of April 21st teased on Facebook. Ambitious, but the McClearys are very passionate about this, and hopefully they can reach their $5,000 goal! At press time, they were at $425, so if you want to support We've Got This and this potential charity concert, visit the above links!

As for Mike's music, he was interviewed by Twist Online on February 21st for this article, where he talked about how his music career started, his inspirations, his new album and it's response, his aspirations in music, and his upcoming plans. Informative overall, especially for those unfamiliar with Mike as a musician! The big scoop here was Mike confirming that his 2016 debut album "In Ruins" is being revamped, and he's "hoping to have it done in a couple of months." That likely explains why it was pulled from online streaming sites, so keep an eye out for updates therein!

Also, here's a couple of new solo performance videos from Haggith/Din alum Mike Haggith from out west in Manitoba, courtesy of his Facebook page in the past week! One from just yesterday is a cover of Sarah MacLachlan's "Possession" that Mike actually appears to keep in the key of the original song. This is a pleasant cover, if unexpected, and if you like his soft higher-registered singing, this will be extra notable! Embedded below is Mike's acoustic rendition of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's "In Your Time", which is similarly reserved to "Possession" in this area, but has a solid tone and emotion to match! Mike has also teased updates regarding his solo recordings, but in the meantime, give his newest Facebook cover videos a look above and below, and stay tuned for more Mike Haggith updates from Thompson when they roll in!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

  • Prior to their local return show, Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide will play Sudbury's Peddler's Pub for the first time in 2 years on March 17th alongside fellow locals The Barn Board Trio, as per label Tidal Records' Facebook page. It's great to see the local Celtic punk favourites back in gear, and don't miss their Soo return at The Speak Easy on the 22nd! For reference, a personal Facebook posting by Dustin indicates that Lake Effect drummer Chris Johns will be behind the kit for these shows, as he was in Sudbury two years ago.
  • SooToday posted this news release on Saturday regarding the return of the Northern Lights Festival Boréal Meltdown Competition in Sudbury on March 31st, but it does not indicate that a sophomore installment of the Sault Ste. Marie-hosted competition is forthcoming this month. The article does encourage potential competitors to travel to Sudbury for the battle, and if you are travelling from out of town, you could be eligible for a registration fee refund. If the omission implies no Soo return, it's very disappointing, but consider a trip east if you want on the NLFB lineup this July!
  • After a year & a half-long hiatus, Six, Two, Oh.'s punk rock bingo series will return for a 6th installment on Friday, April 20th at a new home (The Rockstar Bar!) Now, the bands playing aren't in our covered genres, but they do include Saskatchewan southern rock fan favourites Johnny 2 Fingers & The Deformities and the live debut of The Dynowaves, the new surf rock trio from Slumshine frontman and bingo caller Brenton Ellis. It's great to see punk rock bingo back after taking 2017 off, so visit the Facebook event page for full details, and get your dabbers ready again!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

Local Metal Video Showcase!!

Today's all video post is packed with recent updates, including a new solo performance clip from Saul Michigan, a local solo artist's latest updates, and another's free upload of their old album, but let's lead off with the latest from local/St. Catharine's grindcore trio Shit Liver! For one, the other opening band has been named for their Algonquin Pub concert on April 6th, namely local indie/hard rock quartet Vol. in their first announced concert of the year. Our source is the show's official Facebook event page via a quiet recent update by promoters Six, Two, Oh.. While it is odd to see Shit Liver headline a show with no other extreme metal acts, both Vol. and the previously announced Stegadeth have a lot of talent and should provide an entertaining element next month! That said, Shit Liver have big news, as they released their first ever music video today on their YouTube channel! This is for their new song "Wait" from their upcoming third album "Hitting The Fan" (which comes out on March 13th!), so what should you know on it?

Filmed by "Cannibal Cam" and edited by frontman Josh Penno's film company Spacebag Productions, the video features Shit Liver performing interspersed with footage depicting what appears to be excessive police response to a peaceful protest. Without commenting on the song yet (we'll wait for our review of this album next month!), the video is well shot and edited, and I can see this in Stingray Loud's rotation for Metal at Midnight! Shit Liver fans will definitely want to see this video below, and stay tuned for more on the release of "Hitting the Fan" as it rolls in!

Next up, here's a new video from Sault Michigan classical metal project Theatre of Night's Facebook page, as shared from keyboardist Craig Harrison's personal Facebook page yesterday! A black & white, 19 second clip of guitarist Steve Giles during "Saturday recording", it's well done, but it's short length leaves you wanting more, which may be the intent! Give it a listen below, and check out some album-compiled (but not for sale) collections of their older material on their Reverbnation page!

Also, here's some more recent updates from Sault Ontario hard rock solo artist Mike McCleary! Back on February 13th, Mike posted a couple of acoustic covers of Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden songs to his Bandcamp page as a free single release. Both are well adapted to the unplugged nature of the recording, and are an intriguing listen, but I think I prefer "Mr. Crowley" to "The Trooper" in terms of Mike's vocal style and the song's new structure. Give them a listen above! Mike has also posted a selection of studio material as videos to his Facebook page over the past month, so let's start to run through a few of those today! One was an upload of "Date Night With Darkness" from his new album "Weight of the Truth" on February 12th, with the visual of a cassette tape playing the song, while another (embedded below) is of his song "Aylan" from his debut album "In Ruins", which is reportedly being reworked for a future re-release.

Also uploaded to his YouTube channel on February 23rd, this song is written about and to Aylan Kurdi, a 3 year old Syrian refugee found dead on a beach after being driven from his country (a photo of which being widely circulated last year), with only the song lyrics featuring as visuals. I'll hold comment on the song itself for now, as a review of "In Ruins" is very possible for later this year if the re-release is at all imminent, but given the serious topical nature, it's all the more notable, so give it a listen below!

Finally for today, local hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison has posted his 2006 debut album "Solo Project" onto his YouTube channel! His first uploads there in three years (is it surprising that he has no videos from Gliss shows there?), this might be the first posting of this album for free outside of Tym's website, so if you haven't heard/don't own it, here's a good chance! In track listing (but now YouTube upload) order, the songs are "Battle Love", "Cry", "Drug Dealers", "Our Evil Ways", "Grama", "Hypocrisy", "Only Linux", "Souls of Serenity", "Void Within My Heart", and "We Are Damned", so click each link to hear each track. "Solo Project" was an entertaining showcase of Tym's guitar playing and songwriting talent, and while he's mostly focused on covers in his matinee acoustic concert era, I'm sure he still breaks out these songs on occasion! Might his unreleased second album (which can be streamed here) be next for YouTube? Give "Battle Love" a listen below, and hear more from Tym's first CD above!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site as the week and month roll along! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (March 2018 Update)

With a new month upon us, let's get this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post on the site! This monthly feature looks at the current release statuses and whereabouts of upcoming and at least partially recorded albums from local metal, hard rock, and punk acts, in order to keep fans abreast of what's publically known about them! This month features two removed albums due to their successful release (The Din's "Suburban Sendoff" & Telephone & Address' "Monster"), while two new albums have been added, one within an existing entry. As usual, albums with new information have their name in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bear Hunters - The Dead Testament

Rumoured Songs: "The Void", "The Omen", "Neckbreaker", "I Fear No God", "Servitude", "Transcend Judgement", "For Glory", "The Wrath Of Angmar", "The Dying Den", "The Dead Testament", "Deception" (bonus re-recording), "The Forest of Forests" (bonus track)

Background: In tentative planning since 2014 under this title, local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters have been playing songs intended for their second full length CD for a few years now, but only fully began recording sessions for "The Dead Testament" on October 2nd, 2015. Following a brief fundraising campaign and the gradual unveiling of song titles, the band have been working with producer Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios, and have shared sporadic updates on their Instagram page. Like on 2014's "Eternal Hibernation", rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney has recorded parts for the album despite living in Southern Ontario, but it's not yet clear on how bonus tracks will be handled.

Current Release Status: The Bear Hunters haven't given any firm timetables for when to expect "The Dead Testament" in stores, but recording sessions are reportedly complete, with "finishing touches"  to blame for the delays in finishing the CD. The band is aiming for a more professional sound and release for their sophomore effort, and while there have been private online updates in the interim, the band only broke their silence on it in October on their Facebook page, where they implied that it was "officially moving onto the mixing and mastering phase." Keep an eye out for updates on "The Dead Testament" when and if they come in!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Electric Church's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "Muddy Waters", "Ain't Got None", "Carey Baby", "Take Me Away", "Cross the Line"

Background: Fast rising young blues/hard rock trio Electric Church evolved from Jimi Hendrix covers in 2016 to primarily original material in 2017, and punctuated that on May 12th when they announced on their Facebook page that they were "working up some new songs... for the album!!!" It was confirmed around that time that they were recording material at Mission Control Studios with producer Dustin Jones, who shared a picture on their Facebook page confirming Electric Church's presence. However, few direct updates have followed publically, aside from scattered reminders that they are still working in studio, and that they "are really excited about all the new projects we have planned."

Current Release Status: No clue, but Electric Church are a very talented band who play beyond their years, and no matter how long this takes, the album should be of solid quality when it finally comes out! At last word, the band noted on New Year's Day that they were "looking forward to finishing up in the studio this year", so stay tuned for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Elements' debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Liar", "G20", "Triple H", "The Rut", "I Need A Friend"

Background: Arguably better known for their funk, ska, and hard rock covers, local quartet The Elements have been adding original material to their sets since last year, and have since publically confirmed earlier teases that they are working on a debut EP. Frontman Rob Speers has confirmed in personal conversations last spring that they have been working in studio on the release, which will have at least 5 tracks, and I believe it's being self-recorded, but further public updates are minimal at best. It's also not known if they'll employ any guest performers, such as Jonas Gasperas (who may be their permanent drummer now) and saxophonist Josh Norling, a frequent presence in recent months.

Current Release Status: At this stage, I have no idea, but Rob sounded like things were going well in studio. That said, these were largely personal conversations a year ago, and the band hasn't acknowledged album recording sessions publically in recent months, so we'll have to see if updates come out on it in 2017!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gates of Winter - Perihelion

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "Wormhole Mechanics", "Prometheus", "Eta Carinae"

Background: Despite a hiatus from live concerts lasting over 9 years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". Updates have sporadically been made since early 2010, via numerous uploads, teaser postings, and general hype for the recording sessions, though prior release forecasts haven't been realized, it was retracted from CD to EP length, and most preview media has since been taken down as the band perfected the CD's final content. While Sault native Jon Morrison was announced as the album's drummer in late 2010, it has since been confirmed that "Perihelion" will feature programmed drums. After taking a over a year's hiatus from public activity, Gates of Winter resurfaced in July with new band artwork and hints that they have "been making incredible strides, and are very excited to pull back the curtain."

Current Release Status: Personal commitments and the like have slowed things down incredibly, but in the band's most recent preview video (featuring audio samples), Gates of Winter hinted that work was winding down on "Perihelion", including noting that "the silence ends soon". Good art takes time, and knowing Gates of Winter's talent and attention to detail, they won't want to release this until everything's perfect. I'll admit that I know a bit more on "Perihelion" than what I've posted here courtesy of e-mail conversations and private postings, but I'll wait until more public word comes out. Keep an eye out for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Id Iota's full length second CD

Rumoured Songs: "Happy Sailor", "Intro To American Literature", "Seas Envy Skies", "Long D", "Cop Drama", "Deep Empty", "Blind Spots"

Background: Not long after their successful Ontario tour with Mike Mikus last fall, Id Iota began recording sessions for their second album, though public confirmation that a full length CD was currently in progress didn't occur until guitarist Dustin Goodall announced it on his studio Unsalted Audio's website earlier this year. Scattered postings and hints have followed, but nothing else has came out beyond performances of newer originals in concert through this spring. For reference, this photo got shared a few times on Id Iota's Facebook page last year, but it's unclear if it's intended to be the album's cover artwork or not. It is not clear if the band will retain ex-bassist Dan Linklater's parts on the final product, or if any collaborations with ex-RedD Monkey cellist Pete Mozarowski will make the cut.

Current Release Status: No idea, especially with the alternative/hard rock quartet keeping fairly mum on it's progress (not to mention their recent bassist change), but if there was ever a plan to release it in time for their dissolved May tour run, that's obviously came and went. Keep watch for updates as they roll in!

Kraken Mara's self-titled debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Chimera", "Ishka", "Grand Machinations", "Straus"

Background: The current progressive metal project from Late & Loud guitarist Brendan Christie & Wawa band veteran Jake Valois, Kraken Mara immediately commenced work on studio material upon their April 2016 launch, though they have yet to assemble a full lineup, let alone play live. In sporadic updates since on their Facebook page & their website, the band has indicated ongoing recording sessions towards a self-titled EP, posting and reworking original demos to their website and Reverbnation page over recent months, with Reese Wolf working as sound engineer for the tracks. As well, the cover artwork for the EP was revealed on Facebook at the end of March 2017, and the band has since confirmed plans to record music videos for all of the planned tracks, starting with one for "Straus" in July.

Current Release Status: Your guess is as good as mine, but last fall, Kraken Mara announced on their website that "the last of our tracks are being mastered as we speak", while a new playthrough video is also in the works. Brendan and Jake are keeping things very professional and technical so far, but while updates don't come all that frequently, the instrumental material sounds very good and complex so far! These should please fans of progressive and djent metal, so keep tabs above for updates!

Mike Vincent - "Ultimate Chaos" & his second album

Rumoured Songs (U): "Shoah" (retitled Skull After Betrayl cover), "Sacred Sins", "Six, Six, Six", "Systematical Satan", "Soulless Sanctuary", "Screaming Serenity", "Times Of The Unforgotten", "Chapters of No Light", "We're of Nothing", "Phases of Pain", "Filters of Fire", "Chapter 2: Glow of the Dark", "Ultimate Chaos"

Rumoured Songs (2): "Apocalypse", "Prevarication", "Vitality", "Opprobrious", "Sentinels"

Background: After briefly manning his own solo project in 2011 (which featured original songs named after food), ex-Skull After Betrayl frontman Mike Vincent resurrected his dormant solo project in mid-2016 via his new Bandcamp page. Mike soon posted a series of six instrumentals there, all with titles starting with the letter S, which are planned to constitute his debut EP when finished with vocals. Mike followed up later with four unrelated songs that are planned for his second solo release, with "Times of the Unforgotten" notably featuring his uncle Jason Ladouceur (ex-Winkstinger) in a guest spot. After a year's hiatus for personal reasons, Mike re-emerged with new songs and revised plans to combine his planned EPs "Six, Six, Six" & "We're of Nothing" into one full length album named "Ultimate Chaos", with a second album already underway with songs posted there.

Current Release Status: No idea, but given that he's posted all of it's planned songs on Bandcamp (and already begun album #2), a digital release through there seems likely, unless he only planned them to be individual free uploads. Mike's past local bands haven't quite gotten off the ground in terms of putting out albums, but for fans of Skull After Betrayl, D.O.T.H., and so on, Mike's solo project should be very intriguing, and while he put in some solid work in the process, hopefully these get a formal paid release. Keep tabs for further updates!

Northwest's second EP

Rumoured Songs: "Hangover Habits", "Drinking Games"

Background: Following the release of their debut self-titled digital EP in September 2014, and a lengthy stage hiatus from late 2016 through last winter, local indie/punk quintet Northwest resumed major activity in April 2017 with teaser photos of recording sessions at Mission Control Studios with producer Dustin Jones (as they had done for their debut) being sporadically posted over the following year to their Facebook page. Confirmation that this was for a new EP, their first with current drummer Marc Santos, only came in July via their write-up in this year's Rotaryfest program, prior to their Second Stage debut.

Current Release Status: It's hard to say, especially given their quiet postings aside from the teaser photos, and the fact that their debut EP was only released online, but things sounded like they wee progressing well at a reliable local studio. In their New Year's Day post on Facebook, Northwest said that "we will have new music to share with everyone in 2018", so hopefully Northwest's second album sees it's way onto online or physical storefronts in the coming months!

Redundant's debut CD

Rumoured Songs: "Miles Apart", "That December", "What You'll Do"

Background: Over two and a half years after their last documented studio sessions in the spring of 2012, local punk band Redundant revealed on their Facebook page in November 2014 that they were finally working on finishing their debut CD, and will look to hold a CD release party for it upon it's completion. However, whatever became of those sessions (and planned "new studio shit" in 2016) appear to have been discarded, as Redundant announced last in January that they will begin recording their debut album at Mission Control Studios with producer Dustin Jones, with later public updates and photo uploads indicating that bass and drum tracking has completed. Details are otherwise minimal, including whether recent second guitarist Yannick Casavant will be present.

Current Release Status: Though we don't know much on the new/revived album plans, Redundant did sound serious about completing their CD back in 2014. That said, Redundant have only played a handful of times in the last couple of years, and were only sporadically seen on stage in 2016 & 2017. If we hear any updates, we'll let you know!

Shit Liver - Hitting The Fan

Rumoured Songs: "Hitting the Fan", "Matt Got Beat Up By Cops", "Sir-Osis", "Unabomber", "Liverated", "It Won't Change", "Just Take It"

Background: Planned under this name since at least September 2015, "Hitting The Fan" is the planned follow-up to the local/St. Catharines' grindcore trio 2014 debut album, with last year's all-covers split with AlgomA coming in the interim. Despite occasional teasers, Shit Liver didn't firmly and publically confirm that recording sessions had begun for this album until they announced it's impending release date on their Facebook page on February 13th. There, they revealed the cover artwork & plans to only release it on vinyl records with no intended CD pressings, announced a Canadian release tour this spring, and indicated that the album was recorded and being released by themselves with no label support. As well, a music video for their first single is scheduled to be released on Sunday, as per recent Facebook postings.

Current Release Status: Shit Liver intends to release "Hitting The Fan" on Tuesday, March 13th, presumably including a digital Bandcamp release at that time, but the local on sale date for vinyl copies will likely be on April 6th for their Soo concert during their upcoming tour. Prices have not yet been confirmed, their Bandcamp albums have previously been on a "name your price" model, while split-mates AlgomA put out their prior vinyl releases for $20. Things sound official and exciting for Shit Liver's sophomore original album though, so stay tuned for updates this month!

Skeyes of Seven - Stare at the Sky

Rumoured Songs: "Enough", "See The Truth", "Fallen Faith", "Pretend", "Cognitive Dissonance", "Crawling Back From Reality"

Background: Already no strangers to the studio after recording two songs as singles in the mid-2010s, local modern hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven hit the studio to record their debut EP in 2015, though they only publically confirmed that an EP was in the works in January 2016. Sessions took place at Deluca Sound Productions, who have shared videos of band members tracking material for the EP, the title of which being unveiled later that year. In January 2017, all six songs were posted to their YouTube channel, including the new instrumental "Crawling Back From Reality", while also excluding their older originals "Destination Unknown" & "No One Cares". New guitarist Kyle Sweet is not visibly on the EP, having joined Skeyes of Seven after sessions concluded.

Current Release Status: Given that the whole EP is online for free streaming, then conventional wisdom would say that "Stare at the Sky" would be released imminently, but the band has yet to confirm a paid release date. Hopefully it doesn't stall at being a free posting, as Skeyes of Seven are a talented and experienced band, and having been active in studio more than on stage since launching in 2012, it'd be great to see them culminate this process with a release concert, especially with their return to the stage in September. Follow along to see where things go!

Telephone & Address - "The Early Tapes"

Rumoured Songs: "The Plumbers"

Background: Telephone & Address frontman Chris Shoust announced on their Facebook page in 2015 that he was working on releasing "The Early Tapes", a compilation of songs from the first 4 Telephone & Address albums (2011's self titled album, and 2012's "Live", "No. 3", and "Broken Head"). However, he has since released two separate new studio albums (2016's "Are You Now or Have You Ever" and last month's "Monster"), with no updates on the "Early Tapes" album publically stated in almost three years. The sole publically confirmed track "The Plumbers" can be streamed on their Soundcloud page, and they're likely to turn up on Telephone & Address' Bandcamp page and on Interpunk down the road, assuming this gets released. Unless the tracks are reworked, new drummer Jackson Reed will not feature on this album.

Current Release Status: Chris revealed in March 2015 that this album "will be delayed for some time", and though he didn't elaborate on why specifically, work on both of his last two albums (particularly the very delayed "Monster") could be partially to blame. That said, with an expanded lineup now, "The Early Tapes" may have fallen further in priority, but you never know what could come next from Telephone & Address!

I hope you guys liked this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post! Barring a quick review of the aforementioned "Monster", our next monthly feature post will be this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles one week from tomorrow! That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide And Tym Morrison), Plus This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

March is coming in like a lion with today's post, as we're previewing an eventful weekend of concerts for hard rock fans on both sides of the border! That said, let's begin with LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for this month, including three on SHORT NOTICE!

With a new month underway, we'll add former Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison's slate of March 2018 concerts to our schedule, including Gliss Steak & Seafood gigs TOMORROW & SATURDAY (as well as March 9th-10th, 16th-17th, 23rd-24th, and 30th-31st), plus nighttime returns to The Roadhouse Bar & Grill TOMORROW and on the 30th! Apologies for the short notice on this weekend's three shows, remember that we approach Tym's solo shows on a month-by-month basis due to their prolific nature and long-term length. Now into the spring months with even more acoustic solo shows, Tym Morrison's skilled evenings of familiar covers should play to more positive crowds at Gliss over the next five weekends and beyond, so keep them in mind for your supper-time entertainment downtown! As for the Roadhouse shows, these are the final two shows of his advertised run of bi-monthly concerts in the first quarter of 2018.

It remains to be seen if Tym will play a similar schedule at this east end venue in April and beyond, but just in case, keep these shows in mind for the first and last Fridays of this month! As usual, Tym's Gliss shows (TOMORROW & SATURDAY included) are 6:00 PM events with no announced cover charges or age limits, but mind the locale, while TOMORROW and March 30th's Roadhouse gigs are 19+ events with no announced cover and a 10:00 PM start time. Visit the official Facebook event pages linked here & here for more details, and for a preview, here's Tym live!

Next up, here's a new show that's not going down this weekend, but is well worth addressing, as local/Toronto Celtic punk quartet Dustin Jones & The Rising Tide will return from a lengthy hiatus when they open for local indie rock solo musician Jesse Merineau & his band at The Speak Easy at Algoma University on Thursday, March 22nd! Having only played one local concert in the past 2½ years (July 2016's Hedley show), it's great to see The Tide back after way too long, and hopefully they can pick up where they left off with more entertaining original material! Yes, they are back in our band links, but no word on if Mikey Hawdon or one of their guest drummers will be behind the kit on the 22nd. As for the headliners, SMS readers will recognize Jesse Merineau from winning the 2016 Speak Easy Battle of the Bands, headlining last year's Rotaryfest Stage 2, and featuring Caroline Divine & Electric Church alums in his solo band. Jesse's infrequent solo concerts are usually big events, and fresh off of his upcoming music video/single release, attention should be high for fans of his indie/pop rock originals!

Doors open at 8:00 PM for this ALL AGES concert, which has $10 tickets available at The Speak Easy, The Rad Zone, Case's Music, and the Thomas Walls School of Music. Crank Sound Distribution will handle sound on the 22nd, and it will apparently be co-hosted by AURA (a.k.a. Algoma University Radio), which is their on-campus podcast/discussion forum. This should be a big concert for alt-rock fans in three weeks time, with some punk for good measure from a returning notable quartet, so visit the official Facebook event page for current and continuing details!

Moving back to this weekend's concert previews, we'll next head to The Northern Pines Lounge at the Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace, where Sault Michigan classic/hard rock cover quartet Cousin Eddie will play their first shows of 2018 TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Last seen in Rudyard back in November, this should be another entertaining weekend of hard rocking covers from Highway 63's sister band, so fans craving some good old fashioned rock in the E.U.P. this weekend should keep these shows in mind! However, I will note that the band has not publically acknowledged these shows (they were confirmed on Kewadin's entertainment page), but we'll edit this if we hear that the shows are not going through. Expect 21+ age limits for these shows, which have 9:00 PM start times, and no announced cover charges. Visit the above links for more details, and hopefully some public videos surface in the future from Cousin Eddie concerts!

Finally, let's head back to Sault Ontario for Tidal Records' Punk Covers Night THIS SATURDAY at LopLops Lounge, where three different local bands will join forces! In public advertising, veteran local punk trio Redundant are the last listed band in a rare LopLops appearance of theirs, and with an established set full of punk covers (and perhaps originals from their forthcoming debut EP), they should deliver a fun set on Saturday night! The other two bands are listed in different order depending on source, but one will be another long awaited return from a Dustin Jones-fronted punk band, as his online page-less punk supergroup The Cover-Up will play their first advertised public concert set in three years on Saturday, with he and guitarist Marco Pedalino now joined by fellow Tide bandmate Marshall Jaaskelainen and K.I.C.K.'s Aaron Dunn. It's great to see The Cover-Up also back after their own hiatus, so don't miss them either! Saturday's other band is The Bananas Guerrillas, the new punk band from ex-Stereo North frontman Andrew Pucci and ex-Gnaeus drummer Brendan Garlick.

A successor to or renaming of their Blink-182 tribute Enema of the Soo from last year's Halloween Party event at The Algonquin Pub, I cannot 100% confirm who's on bass this weekend, but Long Shot's Adam Dawe handled that role last fall. It'll be interesting to hear how The Bananas Guerrillas do, and they have some solid returning names! A $5 cover charge is in effect for this 19+ show on Saturday, with a 9:00 PM start time listed on the Facebook event page, while the road on the poster above hints at bands to be covered. Punk fans should make a beeline for LopLops for all of the action on Saturday, so see above links for more details, and here's Redundant live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post next! Thanks everyone!
