LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Soundcheck & Tym Morrison) & Most Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

Before we begin this weekend's concert previews, just a reminder that Sunday's Tantric-headlined concert with Tarnished, Heavy Lies The Crown, and others is in Gould City (90 minutes west of Sault Michigan) and thusly out of our coverage range. It'll be a huge show by non-Kewadin standards in the E.U.P., so keep it mind if you live out west or are up for a road trip! Now, let's start off our Labour Day weekend concert previews in Sault Ontario (Ripcordz aside, check back by tomorrow morning) with some SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!

Nostalgic Band frontman Tym Morrison's weekly summer series at The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post will indeed continue for at least one more week when he returns there TOMORROW EVENING! Apologies for the short notice, we only heard about TOMORROW'S booking via SooToday's events calendar, as the Facebook event page for his summer 2023 run there did not list anything past August. This is par for the course when it comes to Tym's past Mike Case Stage runs, where he'd only advertise shows in actual summer months, yet still play there for a week or two into September despite not being on his Facebook promotions. Perhaps September bookings are late additions? Assuming that last week's show wasn't called off for rain (he never announced as much on Facebook), TOMORROW'S Trading Post gig will be his eighth of this series, perhaps the final if none more get added.

As best as I can tell, The Nostalgic Band are not playing anywhere this weekend. TOMORROW'S solo acoustic concert has a 7:00 PM start time, no age limit, and no cover charge, while 9&10 News is calling for partly cloudy weather of  21-22°. We'll let you know if Tym's back at The Trading Post next week or not, but visit the above links for more on TOMORROW'S show there, and here's Tym playing some classic and hard rock covers live!

Next up, local classic/hard rock cover quartet Soundcheck will return to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for traditional concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via drummer Glen Thomas' personal Facebook page yesterday, and neither the band nor venue's Facebook pages have publically acknowledged them at press time. Regardless, Soundcheck are virtually running the place this week, as their usual jam night hosting duties take place tonight as usual (remember, we don't count jam nights as fully fledged "concerts" due to their unpredictability), while singer/guitarist Cameron Oliver was the Wing Wednesday headliner at Jay's yesterday via an acoustic country set. Despite the late notice, hopefully Soundcheck's fully fledged concerts TOMORROW & SATURDAY help ring September in nicely!

As usual, these shows (Soundcheck's first non-jam night gigs there in almost a month) have 9:30 PM start times, 19+ age limits, and no announced cover charges. Visit the above links for more details on TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT's shows at the former Reggie's West, and here's Soundcheck live!

Now let's tackle a couple of shows that did have advance notice, starting with a road trip to St. Ignace, Michigan, where Traverse City classic metal trio Peril are advertised to play at American Legion Memorial Park as part of the town's Music By The Bay summer concert series TONIGHT! While advertised on Peril's concert calendar for this & last month as seen here, and listed on the concert series schedule linked here, take this concert with a grain of salt, as Peril haven't promoted it anew on their Facebook page despite plugging shows prior and since with new pictures and whatnot. Assuming that tonight's show is still on, it marks a very rare E.U.P. gig for Jeff and crew at a non-Kewadin venue, let alone an outdoor one on a Thursday, so if you want to check out their old school range of heavy covers, keep tonight's show in mind! 9&10 News is calling for sunny temperatures at 64-65°.

If things are still on for Peril tonight, then expect a 7:00 PM start time, no age limit, and no cover charge, much like Tym Morrison in Sault Ontario tomorrow. If Peril aren't playing tonight, you can next see them in the E.U.P. at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino in two weeks. See above for more details, and here's Peril live!

Finally for today's previews, let's head back to Sault Ontario, where local classic/hard rock cover quartet Generations will return to The Water Tower Pub for one night only TOMORROW NIGHT! This will be Generations' first date since the block party on Queen Street East earlier this month, and will be their second gig with new guitarist Tony Kajnar, third if you could his guest appearance with them in July (also at The Water Tower Pub). With a couple of weeks to rehearse and get ready, hopefully Generations keep the classic and hard rock good times going as they head to this popular central venue tomorrow! Remember, The Water Tower Pub traditionally hosts separate acts on Fridays and Saturdays, though I have not heard at press time who is playing there on Saturday. Tomorrow's show has an 8:00 PM start time, no cover charge, and a 19+ age limit. See above for more details, and here's Generations live at the block party earlier this month!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for the Ripcordz preview and more on the site next! Thanks everyone!

Details On Mike Haggith's Full Concert Video From The Northern Vibe Festival!!

As you'll likely recall, local/Barrie alt-hard rock musician Mike Haggith's set as the very first act at Rotaryfest's Stage 1 last month was memorable for all the wrong reasons, after Mike severely dislocated his right knee late in the second song of his set in a freak accident. He and his band managed to play one more while he laid on his back surrounded by medical personnel before he was taken to Sault Area Hospital. While the incident garnered Mike lots of unexpected publicity, it wasn't the show that he and the guys had worked so long to perfect, especially as the Rotaryfest set was the launch party for his new album "All The Best In All You Do". Mike had already committed to heading to Ophir for this past weekend's Northern Vibe Festival well before Rotaryfest, and despite his injury, he and the band did indeed make the hour's drive east into the forest for this set. How did that go?

Good enough that Mike filmed the entire set on Saturday for his YouTube channel! This dropped last night as a scheduled post, though he originally planned to live-stream it if he could get data service on Poplardale Road (apparently, he could not). Notably, Mike had suggested that he'd be playing most (if not all) of his Northern Vibe set while seated due to the rehab on his knee, but he did in fact stand up for the entire set, if less animated than he usually is for full band gigs. I'm unsure if this set was verbatim supposed to be what Mike and the guys (Chris Nielsen, Jacob Quarrell, and Brandan Glew) played at Rotaryfest, but the same two songs started both sets, namely "All You Do" leading straight into "Hot & Cold", during which time nothing happened to anyone's knees! "I've Seen It Before" was not played next, rather a surprise cover of defunct local post punk quartet Gnaeus' song "Lovers".

Local bands covering local bands, you love to see it! That was followed by their version of Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City", which is one of five bonus tracks on Mike's new album that you can only get on the limited "Rose Edition" (sold in DVD cases) or via buying the mp3 copy on Bandcamp. That led straight into Mike's own "MorningStar", followed by a cover-ish of Mike & Brandan's old local band The Din's song "Missing". They next played Mike's newer solo song "Love Will Light The Way", which led straight into "I've Seen It Before", which ended their abbreviated Rotaryfest set. One more surprise 2010s local band cover was played next, as Mike and crew tackled indie/hard rock quartet Bizotic's song "Subway Delay", with two original songs capping the set, including "The Nature Of The Times" and "Twist Of Fate", with Mike putting down his acoustic guitar to just sing for the latter.

Notably, Brandan's ex-Re:Born bandmate Elly McWatters joined the guys on backing vocals for the final two songs, just one day before she won Shooters Downstairs Lounge's annual Talent Quest karaoke competition (congratulations to Elly on her victory!). It's hard to say if Mike's Northern Vibe set was exactly what he was going to play at Clergue Park last month before his knee went rogue, but despite the smaller turnout and hour's drive away, this does complete one hell of an unexpected redemption arc! I'd have zoomed the camera out a bit and/or uploaded it in 16:9 ratio, but everyone sounds good on this set with lots of surprise local covers for good measure! I have no clue how Mike's knee felt during this set (he did make a between-song reference to "hobbling around" on it), but if he isn't pain free by now, he sure persevered and used the on-stage adrenaline to not let it openly show to the crowd in Ophir.

While Mike's pre-Rotaryfest teasers of a live album of that set may have been curtailed (and I don't blame him if they were), this likely won't be the last that we see of his Northern Vibe set, as he revealed on his Facebook page that Justine Chalykoff of local filmmaking company Chalykoff Studios filmed "a proper full-length video" of his set. Justine has hit the ground running for band work since last year with work like Man Feelings' music video and multi-camera footage of Brian Tremblay's Rotaryfest Stage 2 set last month, and the quality here bodes well for Mike and crew! Give everything a watch above and below, and stay tuned for more from Mike soon, and weekend concert previews next! Thanks everyone!

Local Metal Video Showcase!!

Let's keep on clearing our our summer backlog in today's video-heavy post, including some concert footage from two different events, a local band's recent acoustic performance, and a related group's surprise return. With all of that said, here's what you should know!

Prolific local concert filmer Christopher Paci had his camera rolling at the Cory Marks-headlined concert at The Machine Shop on July 21st, uploading ten videos from it to his YouTube channel nine days later! Apologies in the delay in addressing these here, it's been a busy month! From the headlining North Bay country/hard rock musician, Chris filmed Cory and his band covering The Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner", Bryan Adams' "Here I Am", and Ozzy Osbourne's "Mama, I'm Coming Home", as well as playing three originals, namely "Blame It On The Double", "Devil's Grin", and as embedded below, "Outlaws & Outsiders". It looks like Chris had a good spot on the floor, roughly from the third row of people, so to speak. While the visuals aren't crystal clear, the audio holds up, and Cory & his band sound good while blurring genre lines, and he demonstrates some strong vocals too! Check these out above & below!

Next up, Chris' other four videos from this show come from debuting local classic/hard rock cover quartet Silent 9's opening set, where they were filmed covering AC/DC's "Highway To Hell", Bryan Adams' "Run To You", Poison's "Nothin' But A Good Time", and as embedded below, Shania Twain's "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!". Our most substantial looks at Silent 9 yet, these videos capture the range of the Obsession successors well, with Jess able to hit some solid notes across a few different styles. Give their videos a watch above & below, and don't miss their solo headlining debut on the public stage at The Water Tower Pub next Saturday!

Also today, here's some recent updates from local southern hard rock quintet Fort Creek, who have been unusually quiet since opening for Josey Scott's Saliva in June, but they do have a new video to share! This past weekend, the guys (sans Bones and Tony) played an acoustic set at a private outdoor event, where they covered Alice In Chains' "Nutshell" for this video uploaded to their Facebook page. Justin Grayson doesn't hold vocal notes for as long as Layne Staley did, but this is otherwise a faithful cover, and it's good to see Fort Creek back at it, if minus the rhythm section! No word on why this was uploaded as a vertical video with pillarboxing despite being horizontally shot. It is worth noting that this unplugged gig seems to portend something else, as Justin and guitarist Shane Biron's old acoustic act Tattoos & Scars announced their reunion earlier this month! They had teased a reunion in August 2022 too that went nowhere publically.

Tattoos & Scars were originally active from 2018-2019 as a side project for Justin & Shane's then-electric band Halfway Loaded, but neither group really got off the ground as a public live act like Fort Creek would. Their updated Facebook intro calls Tattoos & Scars "an acoustic trio out of Sault Ste Marie Ontario playing all different genres", implying that Fort Creek's Bill Brouillard has joined up here too, but this hasn't been firmly put in writing publically. The "Nutshell" cover is unequivocally a Fort Creek performance (note the skull), but it is good to see Tattoos & Scars back, and hopefully they can make more of an impression in the 2020s! Check everything out above & below!

Finally for today, here's a new video of local alt-hard rock quintet Handsome Sandwich live at the Soo Soundcheck concert at The Sault Community Theatre Centre on June 10th! This was uploaded as a "Shorts" video (YouTube's version of "Reels") on the band's YouTube channel two weeks ago, though no word on why it took this long to get uploaded. The 44 second video sees the band playing their newer original song "Without You", and despite the vertical trappings of "Shorts", the video was shot across three camera angles to capture Jesse, Johnny, and the rest of the band respectively. Are there more substantial Soo Soundcheck videos from these cameras that haven't been released yet? The side-stage footage is good and clear, so despite the vertical aspect ratio and brevity, fans will get a good look at this song while it lasts, so check it out for yourselves below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

Mikey & His Uke's New Cover, Plus Spades GT Updates!!

Let's cover some overdue recent updates from a prominent local group in today's post, but first, we have a big new cover video from a fan favourite local project, so here's what you should know!

After taking July off, Mikey & His Uke is back with a brand new cover video on their YouTube channel! This time out, Bookclub/ex-Lion Ride frontman Mikey Hawdon is going metal, as to honour last months 40th anniversary of Metallica's debut album "Kill 'Em All", Mikey has assembled a far flung all-star band to cover "Motorbreath", so who did Mikey get for this one? On vocals is Jason Shevchuk of None More Black and Kid Dynamite, while guitarists include Ian Fowles (Aquabats/Death By Stereo) and Dave Pino from Andrew W.K.'s band, and the drummer is Authority Zero's Chris Dalley. Usually, Mikey himself plays guitar, but he instead handles bass here, plus his usual ukelele intro before dropping that pretense. Strong cover with Jason's vocals adding a punk flavour to this thrash metal classic, and everyone holds up their end of the musical bargain, but the post-production filter didn't strike me as necessary.

If you're curious, Mikey isn't playing anywhere recognizable in his scenes, rather an empty (to the viewer) room with gray walls. Nothing else shocking to report from the performers' videos, but Jason is sure in your face with his! Give Mikey & His Uke's new Metallica cover a watch below, and stay tuned for more from the project in the fall!

Next up, here is the latest from local/Barrie crossover thrash band Spades GT, so what's new from the former Jack Spades' camp over the past month? On July 26th, they were plugged by The Metal Voice in this Facebook post which said that their new album "Sewer City Radio" has "8 blistering tracks", but aside from not crediting Jay Sarrazin on guitar, there's nothing that we don't already know there. Still good promotion! On August 5th, Spades GT were played on the Great Britain-based Stoverload Music Podcast, and it's great to see that they're getting some attention across the pond, so click here to check out that episode. In a mild surprise, the band revealed on August 4th that they had made a lyric video! As previewed in this "Reel" featuring the ending of a commencement speech by U.S. Navy Admiral William McRaven, the video is for "Black On Black", and is set to footage of military exercises.

The band does not feature on camera, but guitarist Daniel Horton directed/produced the video, and bassist James Roy Daley handled the on-screen text for the lyrics. The video was released to their YouTube channel and Facebook page on the 11th and is embedded below. While my review of "Sewer City Radio" isn't until next month, the tone of the video did catch me by surprise, but it was well edited! Their most recent show was at the Cornwall Chaos fundraiser festival for the Cornwall Hospice on the 19th, where they and Jay's metal band Hellrager were smack dab in the middle of the card, and in their newest posts, they shared two new reviews of "Sewer City Radio". One is from The Metal Pit's Jim Harrison, who gave it a 9/10. Jim praised it as "top shelf material", "groundbreaking", and a "fresh sound", and outlined each song briefly. Solid review, so click here to read it for yourself!

The other review is from Dennis Jarman of Planet Mosh, who gave it a 5 star rating, calling it "incendiary" and "a highly impressive debut" (someone may want to send him Jack Spades' albums!), while also breaking down each song individually. Of note, neither of these reviews list Jay Sarrazin as a band member either, but Dennis credited him on lead guitar for only two songs: "Final Girl" (where he performed in the music video) and "Red". Is this indicative of him leaving the band, or is his busy schedule with multiple other bands just limiting his availability? No one has firmly said, but he's clearly on good terms with the band regardless! Dennis also confirmed that the title track of "Sewer City Radio" is the one featuring Anvil's Steve "Lips" Kudlow with a guest guitar solo, something that wasn't made overly clear in much of the album's prior promotion

Give Dennis' review a read above! Spades GT's next two announced shows are both in Toronto, where they will open for Random Killing at The Bovine Sex Club on September 23rd, followed by a set opening for Anvil at The Rockpile on November 17th. The guys are certainly no strangers to either band, either from the Jack or GT eras, so those shows should go over well! Visit the above links for much more on what Spades GT have been up to lately, and here's their "Black On Black" lyric video!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this week! Thanks everyone!

YouTube Channel Profile Series: Danabelle39 & kilko8011's Channels

Let's get this month's YouTube Channel Profile on the site as our last monthly feature post of the summer! This series looks at 1-3 YouTube channels each month, each being randomly selected from our YouTube subscriptions of channels whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, or punk artists/concerts. Again, this month's installment is on two channels, as the first selected channel only had three videos sourced from two concerts, so a channel with videos from just one show was added to fill things out with. Here's what you should know on both!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Danabelle39's Channel (http://youtube.com/danabelle39)

Owner: YouTube user and Sault Ontario resident Dana Bellerose

Channel Timeline: Launched on January 16th, 2010; Videos uploaded in January and February 2012

Channel Summary: Dana's only uploads are of videos of defunct local classic/hard rock cover band Havadder playing two concerts at the former Nicolet Tavern (later Rednecks Saloon), early in the run of this particular five-piece lineup, which notably featured the complete final lineup of fellow local hard rock cover band Turner Up.

Why You Should Watch: This channel will be of primary interest to fans of early Havadder and late Turner Up lineups, which merged to create a strong unit while they lasted! I should have called them "Havadder Up" in this era, with the power of hindsight. Note that Dana has not visibly used her channel since these videos were uploaded, and you can see more Havadder videos (largely with other lineups) elsewhere.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

Tweeter & the Monkey Man covered by Havadder: Dana's first video comes from Havadder's gig at the Nicolet on January 8th, 2012, where they covered The Travelling Wilburys' "Tweeter & The Monkey Man". Their then-new lineup featured existing singer/guitarist Jason Roy and guitarist Jason "Nez" Nisbet joined by Turner Up's Robert Brown, Travis Sharpe, and Scott McLurg on guitar, bass, and drums (Jason Roy had joined Turner Up himself the previous year). The grainy video quality and uneven lighting don't help the scratchy audio, but what we can make out of this performance is fine, and the triple guitar attack doesn't come across as overkill! Click here to see them covering Seven Mary Three's "Cumbersome" that night via Turner Up's short-lived official channel.

HAVADDER--Running Down A Dream (cover) February 4, 2012: The other two videos here come from Havadder Up's Nicolet show on February 4th of that year, where they covered The Foo Fighters' "These Days" and, in Dana's most popular upload, Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down A Dream". Much improved lighting and softer audio help make these February videos a better watch than January, and while Havadder would splinter off into The Thrill Junkies and Jason Roy's overhauled new Havadder the following year, this super lineup was still neat to have in 2012! If you're curious as to the hockey game playing on the TV monitor in the upper right corner, Edmonton beat Detroit 5-4 after a shootout.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

kilko8011's Channel (http://youtube.com/@kilko8011)

Owner: YouTube user kilko8011, exact identity unclear, but I doubt they're locally based

Channel Timeline: Launched on March 30th, 2011; Videos posted in April 2011 and September 2013

Channel Summary: Alongside a "beer jousting" video, kilko8011's only videos comprise of four songs played by inactive local/Toronto indie/punk quartet Treble Charger at the third annual KOI Music Festival in Kitchener in September 2013, early in their reunion. The videos feature Greig Nori, Bill Priddle, and touring musicians Darcy Yates & Jason Pierce playing outside of Crabby Joe's Bar & Grill as that day's headliners, where they were filmed playing "Cheat Away", "Business", "Brand New Low", and in the most popular video on offer, "Hundred Million". While "Cheat Away" was filmed and uploaded horizontally, kilko8011 changed his camera orientation mid-video multiple times on the rest, and opted to upload them vertically, so be advised of that. While there is some mild audio distortion, Treble Charger sound good on these punk-era cuts, and the crowd was very responsive!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! We're doubling up again next month, as our first randomly selected channel for September only has two videos period, both from different projects, so a channel with a single video was chosen also to round things out with. As such, we'll be looking at the YouTube channels of Curtis McKenzie (featuring two videos from old hard rock projects of his) and Dick Jerkins (featuring a free EP from local metal solo project Awokest). Look for these on or around September 26th, and for lots of overdue news and notes to come on the site this week! Thanks everyone!

Jonesy Land - "Zoom-Out" Album Review!!

It's now time for our 170th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, as we're taking a look at ex-Inner City Surfers/Rising Tide frontman Dustin Jones' online page-less solo project Jonesy Land's debut album "Zoom-Out"! Released through his own label Tidal Records to major streaming services on May 31st (my birthday!), this album is the long-held realization of Dustin's to release a "singer-songwriter" album inspired by his life so far. Dustin is the only official member of Jonesy Land, but co-producer/Lake Effect alum Frank Deresti (who played in Jonesy Land's live dates in mid-2021) guests on much of the album, which was recorded locally at Mission Control Studios and mixed by Kyle Whittaker at Strange Pumpkin Studios in St. Catharines. Guests on "Zoom-Out" include singer Shannon Moan on "Keep Trying" and Dustin's Bookclub bandmates Allan Watson (drums) on two songs and Erin Antonello (trumpet) on "Superior's Sons".

Among the array of links on Linktree, you can hear "Zoom-Out" on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, and Amazon, but if you want to actually buy mp3s of it, Amazon and iTunes have you covered, with Amazon's price running for $9.49. No word yet on a possible physical release of "Zoom-Out", but consider buying the mp3 copy to really support Dustin's work! Song names below are linked to their Spotify copies. With eight songs running for about 24 minutes, let's begin this album review!

We open with the first single "Old Man", which is not a Neil Young cover, rather seeming to reflect on Dustin's relationship with his father and how life has led at an ultimate crossroads. Musically, this hints at the path that Dustin takes on this album, largely shelving punk for a folksier, more introspective sound, though Dustin's vocal tone still provides a punk flavour. This song is definitely well written lyrically, but the repetitive guitar strumming, "oh-oh-oh" vocals, and drawn out ending didn't gel for me as much as the verses did. Not a bad song, but this wouldn't have been my first pick for a music video of the eight songs here. Second is "Shine On", where Dustin reflects on some regrettable moments of his youth, and hopes that his daughter (and his shining star) will be stronger than he was at that age. I take it that the spacey sound effects in the background are supposed to play into the "shining star" references.

As a pure composition, this song is better than "Old Man" for variance and energy, and Dustin uses his vocals to better effect with more of a passioned delivery, but some of the chorus vocal layering feels slightly delayed. The spacey background noise seemed superfluous to me at first, but it kinda grew on me after a while, so the album is trending upward early! Third up is "Father Time", where Dustin reflects on life and his travels, and how he has to hold the memories close as Father Time isn't slowing down for him. The fullest sounding song yet for instrumentation, this is basically a country song, just with Dustin singing it. For my own musical preferences, which don't really lean to country, it's not for me, but I will praise the song for having the best written lyrics on offer yet, and the clear intent to make this sound like more of a band is very much noted!

The first half of "Zoom-Out" arrives with "Superior's Sons", which is the closest thing yet to a Bookclub original song based on the inclusions of both Erin and Allan as guests (note that press releases didn't say that there was a drummer guesting on this particular track). Lyrically, it's about how Dustin and his friends have stuck together in Northern Ontario through thick and thin for all these years. I was getting a bit of a Tragically Hip vibe here on the verses (not so much the choruses), and it's an effective song that adds a bit more of a rock influence, which is welcomed! The stop-start choruses didn't really fit the flow of this song, and while Erin's trumpet work being more atmospheric helps her fit into the track, I'd have boosted her volume a tad. So far, I do like the even numbered songs more than the odd numbered ones, so make of that what you will! Jonesy Land's fifth song on offer here is "Ode To The Boys", which Allan returns to the drumkit on.

This is basically about Dustin looking back on the good, if often wild, times that he had with his old local punk bands in the 1990s and 2000s. The lyrics alone will intrigue Surfers fans, but this is very much a folk rock song that calls to mind Great Big Sea more than Green Day, if that makes sense. Again, the layering of the vocals in the chorus doesn't work as cleanly for me as I'd like, but the direct and honest look at a more carefree time is well handled, and this would work well as a drinking song of sorts in concert! Next is "Lonely Boy", which is thankfully not a Black Keys cover. This is basically the sequel to "Old Man", with Dustin reflecting on the apparent death of his father and how he wished he was still here for guidance.

The longest song on the album, we revert to a stripped down, percussion-free presentation here. Having lost my mother three years ago, I can relate to a lot of what Dustin's singing here, and while the music on offer is a little reserved and folksy compared to my wheelhouse, you have to admire the personal messages and emotion being expressed. Not for me as music, but as a lonely son myself, I thank him for writing this! The penultimate song is "Keep Trying", which appears to be a reflection of Dustin's relationship with his wife (with Shannon Moan standing in for her on vocals), and how they'll keep trying to make things work if the other equals the effort. The contrast in singing styles here is interesting, and I'm not sure that the "pop right back up" verse required that aggressive tone, but if you liked the folksy ambiance of "Lonely Boy" and thought that a female vocalist would add to it, you'll like this!

"Zoom-Out" ends with its shortest song, "Summer's End" (extra fitting as we're nearing the end of August). This feels like a coda to "Lonely Boy", in the sense that he'll always cherish the (metaphorical?) summer, but he can let a loved one go now, and it's time to move on. Oddly, this is solely presented as an acapella multi-tracked vocal performance with only some backing harmonics to send things out with. I'm not sure how intentional this was, the recording quality feels lower for this song, like they were trying to replicate an old 78 rpm record. Not how I'd have ended the album, but A for effort! Honestly, "Shine On" feels like something more suited for track #8.

So, what are my final thoughts on Jonesy Land's debut album? While hardly a punk album aside from lyrical references and Dustin's vocal style, it's an effective collection of songs that showcases his range and growth as a musician! Remember, we're 20+ years removed from The Inner City Surfers' debut album, I'd hope things hadn't stagnated musically or professionally! Dustin was always one to include folk influences on his past band work, and those come to the forefront here with care and professionalism, and while his vocals may not always suit a pure acoustic folk record, the messages and intent always came off as genuine and honest. He and Frank did a good job here, but for my preferences in music, I did think that the album peaked on the two songs with drums, Yes, the intent was a singer/songwriter album, but diehard fans who still want those unreleased 2019 Surfers songs or the unfinished final Tide album may be left wanting more.

I can appreciate the album lyrically full stop, but a few too many choruses didn't have vocals layered in a way that I'd consider optimal, and I didn't quite get the first and last songs on offer. Most other nitpicks are just based on my musical preferences, but I do think that Dustin should have included the three Jonesy Land standalone singles from 2021 & 2022 ("Sunshine Parades", "Moral Blackout", and "Ain't Dead Yet") on the final product. Perhaps they were omitted because two of them were full on punk songs and that's not the style that he wanted for the album, but it's a short album and they'd have been welcome filler, even as just bonus tracks. Still, as a window into the man that Dustin Jones was, and has became, "Zoom-Out" is an effective and well made album with a lot of honest reflections, and while I do prefer his full punk work, I do recommend that fans of his solo career check out the album or buy it on your preferred streaming services!

I hope you guys liked this month's CD review! Our next monthly review will be on local/Barrie crossover thrash quintet Spades GT's new album "Sewer City Radio" from June of this year, so look for that next month, and for more news and notes on the site next week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Bone Yard, The Nostalgic Band, And Tarnished), Weekend Concert Previews, And More!!

With the Northern Vibe Festival previewed yesterday, let's dive into this weekend's local concert previews within Sault Ste. Marie city limit(s), and as luck would have it, the last weekend of August is mostly comprised of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS as far as heavier-leaning acts go, plus a new video of one of the bands in question. To avoid pushing the new Saturday nighter below to another day-of preview, this preview post is slightly longer than normal, so hopefully everything is covered, and with all of that said, here's what you should know!

Sault Michigan metal band Tarnished will return to The Merchants Bar for one night only TONIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced this show via their Facebook page yesterday, and The Merch scarcely advertise shows booked there online. TONIGHT's concert will be Tarnished's first at the West Spruce Street nightclub in just over a month, and will be their third since their lineup split in two earlier this month, though no word on which guitarist & bassist will join Alex & Josh TONIGHT (for reference, last week's shows in Rudyard and Cedarville featured guests Chris Hubbard and Mike East). Remember too that Tarnished started off with Alex & Josh playing two man acoustic gigs, so if all else failed, they could fall back on that. TONIGHT'S gig at The Merch has a 9:00 PM start time, 21+ age limit, and no cover charge. See above for more details, and here's Tarnished live!

Next up, let's head across to Sault Ontario, where local classic metal cover trio The Nostalgic Band will take the stage at Jay's Piston Broke Pub TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! Again, apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via their Facebook event page on Tuesday. Last seen at Reggie's two weeks ago, TONIGHT & TOMORROW'S Jay's dates will be Tym, Dutch, and Chet's first shows at the former Reggie's West in almost a month. Hopefully their old school metal and hard rock covers get another strong reaction this weekend! TONIGHT & TOMORROW'S concerts have 9:30 PM start times, 19+ age limits, and no cover charges. See above for more details, and for a preview, here's a new video featuring The Nostalgic Band live! This was shot for bassist Randy "Dutch" Vanderploeg's YouTube channel Randy's Rides, and it features footage from two gigs, so what should you know?

Shot on July 27th & 28th, the video features Randy heading to and playing at Jay's on the 27th, and we get under a minute of their cover of Ratt's "Round & Round", preceded by footage of them setting up at the venue. That show was a one-nighter due to a private gig in "the bush" at a local resort's customer appreciation day, and we see the ride up for that and footage of Dutch exploring the area. If you recall their (sadly) deleted video of them covering Deep Purple's "Highway Star" at a private gig, then you will like that this was that gig, and the footage returns here.... partially, as the beginning of a montage of clips from their set that night. I wish that they'd have left the full "Highway Star" video on Facebook (even with the zooming), but it's neat getting full context as to that gig, and the voyage is as fun as the destination! Check it out below, and don't miss The Nostalgic Band back at Jay's  Piston Broke Pub TONIGHT & TOMORROW!

Also newly announced for this weekend, local southern hard rock trio Bone Yard will return to Gateway Casino TOMORROW NIGHT for an acoustic gig! Apologies again for the short notice, the band only announced this show on their Facebook page on Wednesday, and at press time, the casino has not acknowledged live entertainment for this weekend on social media. This will be Bone Yard's first stop at the casino since June in a show that was also unplugged, despite initial venue advertising that it was for The Bearded Lounge, their Warren-less acoustic side project. I don't know if this is an intentional choice to switch things up again, or if they've quietly retired The Bearded Lounge in lieu of keeping the Bone Yard name for all gigs and to include Warren in them, but note that The Bearded Lounge did plug the Dragonfly Run (which Bone Yard headlined) on Facebook in July.

If The Bearded Lounge's active status is clarified, we'll let you know, but if you like them, you'll obviously like Bone Yard unplugged TOMORROW NIGHT! Expect an 8:00 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover charge at Gateway Casino for this one-nighter. Visit the above links for more details, and here's Bone Yard live and unplugged!

We'll close today's weekend concert previews with a show that did have advance notice, as Nostalgic Band frontman Tym Morrison will play the last advertised show of his summer series at The Mike Case Memorial Stage outside of The Trading Post TONIGHT! This is the seventh Friday evening gig of the year for Tym at the outdoor stage way down Great Northern Road, and while there's no listed bookings for September, his series there last year did continue into September for a couple of weeks. We'll let you know when/if he publically extends things again, but the Mike Case stage is definitely seasonal and closes before October. As has usually been the case this summer, Tym's show tonight does precede his Jay's show with The Nostalgic Band TONIGHT, so he'll zip to the west end post-show for more classic/hard rock cover action! Beforehand, he's on at 7:00 PM with no cover or age limit.

Weather-wise, 9&10 News is calling for mostly cloudy weather in the 18° range with light rain likely in the second half of the show. Tym's show here two weeks ago was cancelled due to rain, and while the forecast tonight is better than what Northern Vibe attendees are expecting an hour east, be prepared just in case. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, whether this is his 2023 finale here or not, and here's Tym live at The Mike Case Stage earlier this year!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site this weekend! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Northern Vibe Festival)!!

The eighth annual Northern Vibe Festival returns to the old Hempfest grounds on Poplardale Road in nearby Ophir this weekend, and for the first time since 2019, organizers have announced the timeslots for the bands! Granted, they only did so on their Facebook page on Saturday, making these SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, but I'll take this over scouring performers' Facebook pages for schedule hints (like in 2021) or hoping that one of them will post the schedule on their own accord (like last year)! For a third straight year, Spades GT frontman J.D. Pearce is dusting off his old local promoter hat to curate the Forest Stage at this year's Northern Vibe Festival, which joins the DJ-centric Roost River Stage (which similarly had a lineup reveal on Saturday) in bringing music to the masses once again, but who can you expect in Ophir and when on the band-centric Forest Stage this weekend?

Firstly, I apologize for the short notice for both nights of music at Northern Vibe VIII, as the Forest Stage lineup only officially came out on Saturday, but this is still earlier than not at all! Keeping with recent formats, there are no bands on Sunday, which is primarily for camping purposes. As usual for recent Northern Vibes, TOMORROW'S band program has the shorter bill, and will be headlined by local funk/hard rock cover sextet The Wyld Stallyns in their third straight set at Northern Vibe, so look for them at 9:00 PM! Newer local punk/hard rock quartet Far From Fine will co-headline at 8:00 PM in their fourth live set and first show outside of Sault Ste. Marie city limits, though they have not announced if Blair St. John will be filling in on drums again or not. Cornwall speed metal trio Hellrager (featuring J.D.'s Spades GT bandmate Jay Sarrazin) will make their local debut at 7:00 PM.

Finally, your Friday openers at 6:00 PM are local punk trio A Dire Setback in their third straight set at this festival, just over a week out from their and Far From Fine's joint gig opening for The Ripcordz at The Loft. Strong lineup for punk fans with a slightly more commercial lead-out to the festivities, so don't bypass the opening night's band action! We'll get into ticket/admission details at post's end, but be advised that 9&10 News is calling for thunderstorms during the band timeslots (though organizers plan to press on, rain or shine, and the Forest Stage does have a roof). Temperatures will range from 18-23°. See above for more details on the Friday roster, and here's The Wyld Stallyns live!

As for the longer bill on SATURDAY, that will be headlined at 9:00 PM by Montreal ska punk band K-Man & The 45s, making their long awaited return to the Soo area for the first time post-pandemic! As anyone who saw K-Man & The 45's explosive and fan friendly brand of ska punk in their seven local concert appearances from 2013-2019 can attest, their horn section-laden attack will be a fitting capper to the weekend, so don't miss their set! Local alternative hard rock quintet Handsome Sandwich will play their third straight Northern Vibe as co-headliners at 8:00 PM, while in a mild surprise, magician Ryan McFarling will have a formal set on the Forest Stage at 7:00 PM. Ryan wasn't previously advertised among the bands on the poster, rather as a featured attraction like in past years, but it'll be interesting to see how his illusions go over as the Forest Stage takes a brief pause from rock music, and he should go over well!

The aforementioned Jay Sarrazin will also bring his Waterloo hard rock quartet Sierra Pilot to Northern Vibe for their first ever local set on Saturday at 6:00 PM, so while we're not getting Spades GT this year, this will help fill the gap a bit! In his first local concert since his freak knee dislocation at Rotaryfest last month, local/Barrie alt-hard rock musician Mike Haggith and his local backing band will have a do-over on Saturday at 5:00 PM, with Mike reportedly sitting down for the set as he continues his recovery. Fingers crossed that things go as planned this time for him, his bandmates, and his fans making the trip east! Online page-less punk/alternative cover quintet Bookclub will take the stage at 4:00 PM to cap off their busy summer, while revived local rock duo The Castletons (featuring Frightlight bassist Mike "Eddie Fright" Gingras) will open the proceedings on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

Handsome Sandwich aside, every act on Saturday is new to that stage (Ryan McFarling's past off-stage performances acknowledged), so expect lots of varied and entertaining music from this batch of performers, with lots of punk and hard rock to go around for genre fans! Saturday is too far out for an hourly forecast from 9&10 News, but they're calling for partly cloudy weather with a high of 23° that day, and only a 10% chance of rain. Visit the above links for more details on this stacked roster of bands on Saturday, and here's K-Man & The 45s live!

Conspicuous from their absence from the schedule is the one-off reunion of local horror punk quintet Frightlight (fronted by Forest Stage curator J.D. "Johnny Pints" Pearce), and while no public statement was made, J.D. confirmed on his personal Facebook page last week that the band "isn't gonna be able to make it to Vibe". A reason for their withdrawal wasn't announced, but given that J.D. and Mike will be present, the unavailability of one/both guitarists or the replacement drummer (whose identity was never made public) could be why. Hopefully Frightlight rise from the dead again in the future if things line up! While Ryan McFarling's set seems like a likely replacement candidate, I'm told that Frightlight were supposed to have headlined tomorrow. Rather than get a late replacement band, The Wyld Stallyns were promoted to headliners with an extended set (they're used to that given their solo nightclub gigs!)

Crank Sound Distribution will provide sound at the Forest Stage. Outside of the music stages, Northern VIIIbe (get it?) will also feature local artists, vendors,  and all-weekend camping, so be sure to click here and visit the festival's Facebook page for full details on what to bring and expect when making the hour's drive east from the Soo! Facebook has more specific details on the specific vendors and sponsors, for the record. Also, the festival takes place rain or shine and is very much off the grid, so be prepared. Directions to Ophir are posted at the links above, but note that there is a road closure until tomorrow evening on Highway 638 from Echo Bay, so definitely check Facebook for recommended detour routes. Northern Vibe takes place rain or shine, it is a 19+ event, and while online ticket sales have closed, you can still pay at the gate, with prices jumped up thusly to $150 (full weekend) or $85 (Saturday only).

There are no Friday-only options, but the option of a Saturday-only ticket is welcomed! Whether you're a Hempfest veteran, a Northern Vibe regular, or just love a good outdoor concert/camping trip, The Northern Vibe Festival should be a fun time, so definitely visit the above links for full details on this weekend's festivities, and stay tuned for more weekend concert previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!
