It's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! In our monthly spotlight of a local metal, hard rock, or punk band from the past (randomly selected as always), we're next heading back a decade to look at a very unique but entertaining hard rock group that definitely turned heads at many a local concert, so here's what you should know on them!
(Note that both Kate and Jamie are now known by the last names Hatherley and Garside respectively due to getting married after The Danger Cats disbanded, but the band's run predated their weddings. Incidentally, they both married members ofLate & Loud.)
Audio/Video: The Danger Cats did write and perform a handful of original songs like "Wanted Man" and "Sugar Mama", but never released an album of any sort despite recording at Six Two Oh in April 2015. Covers ranged from the likes of The Runaways, Blondie, and Bif Naked to AC/DC and The Black Keys, among other acts. The best modern source of Danger Cats videos is their YouTube channel, which features multiple live concert videos from their heyday, and even an interview, but fan shot videos exist elsewhere in decent quantities, and I have filmed them for our Facebook page as well. Here's The Danger Cats playing their own song "Give Me" and covering The Scorpions' "The Zoo" at The Rockstar Bar in 2014!
Info/Analysis:A rare example of an all-female rock band in the Sault Ste. Marie area, The Danger Cats formed in April 2013 and made their public debut opening for the short-lived Hydra's Teeth at The Algonquin Pub that September. Taking their stage names from various cat species/breeds and playing that up in their concert attire, The Danger Cats lineup remained stable throughout their run aside from Kate moving to vocals & guitar upon Katie joining on drums, not to mention Summer's departure for health reasons in early 2014. Fans will recall seeing the ladies open for touring bands like K-Man & The 45s, Archaics, and The Red Rails, while also opening Late & Loud's two reunion gigs, playing Rotaryfest Stage 1 in 2014, and competing at the VM Radio Battle Of The Bands semifinals in 2015. The Cats also could be seen at multiple all-local gigs, and even headlined a few solo concerts on the weekend cover circuit.
In advance of Kate's move to London, The Danger Cats announced their impending breakup in May 2015, last playing live at the Border Brawl roller derby event the following month. Gender aside, The Danger Cats impressed local audiences with their fun and lively sound, with promising originals and eclectic covers that served them well at multiple kinds of local concerts in their 2+ years together! Once Kate moved to vocals & guitar, she got into a more familiar groove that helped the band click even moreso, and everyone's skills developed well as they got more experience. It's a shame that The Danger Cats didn't last longer, but hopefully they reunite in the future if things line up properly, and R.I.P., Summer!

The Sault Metal Scene sends it's deepest condolences to the family and friends of original Danger Cats frontwoman Summer Stevens, who passed away at Sault Area Hospital on Wednesday at the age of 30, as per this obituary on SooToday. Summer is survived by her mother, four brothers, two sisters, and her other extended family. A passionate fan of music and singing, Summer will be best known to SMS readers for her stint in the inaugural lineup of the all-female hard rock/punk band The Danger Cats, where she took on the stage name Summer Snow-Leopard. She would sing lead for most of their late 2013 gigs, notably including K-Man & The 45s' headlining date at the former Roosevelt Hotel that October, before amicably leaving the group in February 2014 for health reasons. Outside of the band, Summer parlayed her singing abilties into high profile performances at her Grade 12 graduation, a Soo Greyhounds game, and at numerous local karaoke nights in the 2010s.
A come & go service at her family's Rankin home was held yesterday, while services (entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home) will take place tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM with Elder Willard
Pine officiating, and the family has asked for memorial contributions to Diabetes Canada in lieu of flowers. I didn't know Summer personally, but I know she was a kind and friendly person with real musical gifts, and losing a loved one on Christmas Day is unfathomably sad. There aren't a lot of videos online from her brief run with The Danger Cats, but here she is in (I believe) her last show with them, covering a Ramones classic at LopLops that December. R.I.P. Summer!

Why You Should Watch:Fans of this all-female power quartet would be well served to check out this channel, which is loaded with videos from the height of their year and a half together! However, note that 2013 concerts featuring original singer Summer "Snow-Leopard" Stevens are not featured on this channel, nor are their final shows from 2015, with updates not continuing following their breakup that year.

The Danger Cats Shaw Interview: Back in July 2014, The Danger Cats (minus drummer "Calico" Katie Maskell) were featured in a Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie interview with then-correspondent and prolific former local rock bassist Jonna (Nathan) Bouliane, intended for his "Boardwalk Sessions" series with other local musicians. Jonna isn't seen on camera for the actual interview, with title cards showing questions on how the girls met, how they came up with their name, why Kate formed the group, their musical background, how the local music scene was, their plans for that year, and where you could find them online. Though teased songwriting for an album didn't meet that end, you do get to see Kate and guitarist Paula "Panther" D'Agostino perform two acoustic originals in this interview clip, which is informative and arguably conducted at the right time during their run!
Cherry Bomb, Big Balls By the Danger Cats: Though a part of the original rock scene in Sault Ontario at this time, The Danger Cats played a few well received solo weekends at The Esquire Club as well, with a July 2014 show there being the source of three videos on the channel, including one cover of Blondie's "Call Me", and one containing both The Runaways' "I Love Playing With Fire" and The Scorpions' "The Zoo". Featured here is The Danger Cats covering both The Runaways' "Cherry Bomb" & AC/DC's "Big Balls", which both feature bassist Jamie "Jaguar" Van-Schooneveld on lead vocals. Though the lighting is hit and miss, the covers are lively and well performed all around, and their confidence was definitely building! Two more Esquire Club videos from a show the following month were their channel's last uploads.
I Love Myself Today and Metal Queen Cover by The Danger Cats w/ Marisa!: The Danger Cats were good friends with the members of local power metal quartet Late & Loud, so it was a no brainer for them to open for that band's one-off farewell show at The Rockstar Bar on August 1st, 2014. Two videos of theirs were posted from that night, including one with their original "Give Me" & The Scorpions' "The Zoo" (both with guest guitar work by Late & Loud's Jonathan Tiberi), but featured here is the channel's most popular video, of the girls covering Bif Naked's "I Love Myself Today" & Lee Aaron's "Metal Queen" alongside current Red & The Muscle singer Marisa Valois. This was a nice surprise for gathered fans, especially given Marisa's own vocal talents, and hopefully she and Brendan got a nice send-off before their move to Britain from this well received show! Despite fans in camera range, The Danger Cats were on point here!

One year ago today, the first annual VM Radio Battle of the Bands commenced at The Canadian, so in that spirit, here's the return of our Battle of the Bands Rewind Profile series! I'd debated waiting until the 25th (one year from the finals), but I thought it'd be best to get this up now as we continue the lead-up for this year's VM Radio Battle (which begins this coming Wednesday), and we'll have much more on that soon as well. As in our past battle profiles, this is strictly an informative feature with no reviews or criticism of the competing bands, either from the event or their activity since. Hopefully this brings back some fun memories, so here's our first of two straight battle of the bands profiles from last year!

The 2015 VM Radio Battle of the Bands (March 4th-25th, 2015)
Background: A spiritual sequel to 2013's Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands, local concert promoter J.D. Pearce partnered with then-new local digital radio network VM Radio (and their parent company Village Media), Tidal Records, and sponsors Case's Music, Maxx Graphics, and The Sault Metal Scene to host the first annual VM Radio Battle of the Bands on every Wednesday in March 2015 at The Canadian Nightclub. 11 bands (up from 9 in 2013) competed for numerous prizes in a staggered weekly competition, with three semifinals taking place on March 4th, 11th, and 18th, and each night's winner (plus the highest scoring runner-up band as a wild card) re-convening at The Canadian for the finals on March 25th. Like in 2013, judges scored the bands on aspects of their
musical ability, chemistry, stage presence, and crowd engagement (among
other factors) for a total score out of 300 each night, or 100 points a
judge, while individual awards were scored on varying criteria depending on the award's type.
Prizes:
The first place band would receive $1,000, a professionally produced electronic press kit & video from VM Radio, and a large framed plaque for their victory. In lieu of prizes for the runner-up bands, individual awards were instead offered for finalists & semifinalists alike, including Case's Music gear packages for the Best Guitar Player & Bass Player, a new microphone from Right Hook Mics for Best Vocal Performance, a custom drum skin from Maxx Graphix for Best Drummer, recording time with Tidal Records for Best Original Song, a Budweiser/Marshall amplifier beer fridge for the Fan Favourite Band, a case of Bomb Energy Drinks & a Bomb t-shirt for the Most Energetic Band, and a $100 Rad Zone gift certificate for the Most Enthusiastic Fan.
Competitors: The semifinal on March 4th featured three competing bands, including local death metal veterans (and reigning Viva La Battle winners) The Bear Hunters, indie/folk rock quintet Honest Job, and newer metal trio Infamous, with alternative/grunge trio The Pixo Control filling out that night's lineup as a guest performer out of competition. The March 11th semifinal featured all female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats, grunge/metal standouts Haggith, progressive rock quartet Mannapool, and new pop punk group Stereo North, while March 18th's semifinal featured rap/metal project The Apocalypse Afterparty, post-punk/garage quartet Gnaeus, alternative/hard rock trio Mike Haggith & The Din, and classic metal quartet Project 421.
Results: The winners of each week's semifinals were The Bear Hunters, Mannapool (as part of a close 8.5 points spreadbetween that night's four bands), and The Apocalypse Afterparty, while Gnaeus claimed the wild card slot for the finals. The other night's runner-up bands were Honest Job & Haggith, and Infamous finished in third on the 4th, but no other nightly or overall results were announced for non-finalists. In the March 25th finals, Gnaeus overcame their wild card status to edge The Bear Hunters by two points to claim their second battle of the bands title in 20 days time, with Mannapool & The Apocalypse Afterparty finishing in third and fourth place. Among individual prizes, Bear Hunters members Mitch Sirie & Johnny Belanger each won the Best Guitar Player & Drummer prizes, while Haggith frontman Curtis McKenzie won Best Vocal Performance, Honest Job bassist Jared Fridy claimed the Best Bass Player title, and Gnaeus won Best Original Song for their track "Circles".
As well, The Apocalypse Afterparty were the Most Energetic Band, Project 421 won the crowd-voted Fan Favourite Band award, and Danger Cats drummer "Calico" Katie Maskell was chosen by organizers as the Most Enthusiastic Fan.
Aftermath: Gnaeus continued to play major concerts throughout 2015, and have recently been busy recording their debut album "Loomings", while The Bear Hunters have enjoyed a similar trajectory, with their sophomore effort "The Dead Testament" now in production. Mannapool have largely been working in studio since this battle, releasing their album "Full Hearts, Half Hearted" in December, while The Apocalypse Afterparty have not played live since, with their "Bufflesnort" EP and a new lineup currently in the works. Honest Job & Infamous have both been fairly quiet since mid-2015, while both The Danger Cats & Haggith disbanded that same summer, albeit after both conducting studio recording sessions, with Haggith putting out two final albums. Finally, Mike Haggith & The Din (now simply The Din), Project 421, and Stereo North remain active and frequent sights at local concerts, often playing together in the process.

Trivia:
Local doom/punk trio The Revolution were scheduled to play this battle on the first night, but they surprisingly broke up for the first time in February 2015, while a mid-2015 reunion didn't lead to much publically. They were replaced on a month's notice by Mike Haggith & The Din, who had just added Revolution drummer Brandan Glew to their lineup, though they switched places with planned night #3 guest performers The Pixo Control due to scheduling conflicts. As well, Revolution bassist Jordan Leach (who would have made his debut with the band at the battle) still competed anyway as Haggith's bassist on March 11th.
The judges for the duration of The VM Radio Battle of the Bands included Tidal Records owner & Rising Tide frontman Dustin Jones (who had brushes with competing & playing at local battles in 2009), Elements frontman & Village Media repesentative Rob Speers, and Sault Metal Scene
owner Rob Figures (the only returning judge from 2013's Rockstar Bar Battle.) For this battle, promoter J.D. Pearce handled the MC duties in lieu of a judge.
Gnaeus' narrow victory in the VM Radio Battle of the Bands made them the first local band to win two battles of the bands since defunct death metal quintet Bring The Fallen won three of these events from 2009-2010, as well as the first non-metal band to do so since folk rockers Blackwater won the Sault College/Scotties Tournament of Hearts Battle in February 2010.
The Bear Hunters' appearances in this battle occurred without rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney, as he currently lives out of town and only plays select gigs as a result. The band pulled out extra stops for their finals set with an increased usage of camouflage attire, the debut of their new song "The Dying Den", and a mass slaughter of teddy bears during their set, with some of the bears being claimed by fans as souvenirs.
The Apocalypse Afterparty's semifinal appearance on March 18th marked their first live concert appearance as a quartet, now with Sara Biedermann (as "x") on bass and Amanda Brown (as "z") on the MPC electronic sampling instrument. However, their finals set marked their last concert appearance with drummer Steve Mozarowski (a.k.a. "X") due to his departure from the band later that year, and his replacement has yet to be publically unveiled.
Honest Job's semifinal set on March 4th saw the live debut of their new bassist Jared Fridy, whose performance netted him the Best Bass Performance award during the finals. However, he wasn't in attendance that night, so bandmates accepted on his behalf.
Haggith made their final live concert appearance with founding guitarist Daniel Horton (and only one with his short haircut) during the March 11th semifinal. He departed the band shortly afterward, and he was replaced by original bassist Caleb Cachagee until their breakup that summer. However, he would reunite with singer Curtis McKenzie later that year when Curt rejoined Project 421, after his prior stint on lead vocals in early 2014.
Both of Daniel Horton's then-bands (Haggith & Project 421) unveiled new originals during their semifinal sets, with Haggith's being "Silver Bullet", and Project 421's being "Into The Darkness". The former song was only played the one time before Daniel left Haggith, but the latter is still frequently played during Project 421 concerts.
The Pixo Control's involvement as a guest performer rather than as competitors was due to their signing to sponsors Tidal Records, avoiding a potential conflict of interest concern. The Pixo Control's set was well received, and while they replaced bassist Steve Edwards with Dustin Goodall last fall, they've since released their debut CD "Probably Not" in December, played a handful of out of town concerts, and continue to play live often in the area.
To fans uninitiated with The Apocalypse Afterparty from their duo concert appearances, the band made a lot of waves from their masked attire, creative hybrid sound with two bassists & no guitarists, a half-female lineup, the sale of bandanas during the finals, and use of false British accents on stage. However, fans of members' prior work with The Fury and RedD Monkey no doubt enjoyed the presence of familiar songs like "Rebel Scum" & "Fo' Dozen Cookies" during their sets.
Along with their sponsorship involvement in the battle, local news/video website Local2 gave in-depth promotion and coverage of each night of the battle with four episodes of their music webseries Tuned with Donna Hopper, with Donna also being a nightly fixture to cover and photograph the bands for SooToday. These Tuned episodes featured remarks from judges, band introductions, performance footage, and nightly results, but Donna was unable to host the finals episode due to illness, so VM Radio's Derek Turner (himself a battle winner with Garden of Bedlam) filled in for her.
The scheduling of the VM Radio Battle of the Bands prompted local live sound company Twin City Sound & Entertainment to indefinitely postpone a battle of the bands that they were to host at The Rednecks Saloon on February 20th, 2015, due to it's proximity to this larger battle that would start 12 days later. Were it to take place, it would have been a one night event with up to 10 bands playing 25 minute sets each, with Mourning Wood frontman Terry Eaton, Midway frontman Paul Leclair, and the aforementioned Rob Figures serving as judges.
Despite the cancellation of the Twin City Sound Battle, Algoma University hosted the first annual Speak Easy Battle of the Bands on March 5th, 2015, just one day after night #1 of the VM Radio Battle. The fan voted event (which was co-promoted by Haggith bassist Jordan Leach) was also won by Gnaeus, who picked up $400 for their win, while The Bear Hunters won $100 for third place (hard rock quartet Long Shot finished in second.) VM Radio Battle competitors Mike Haggith & The Din and Project 421 also competed in The Speak Easy Battle, but did not place in that event.
VM Radio Battle judge Rob Speers took a stab at competing in a local battle of the bands when his funk/hard rock band The Elements headed out to Spanish to compete in the annual Rock N' Roar Battle of the Bands the following month, with Bear Hunters drummer Johnny Belanger filling in for Alex Hagerman, who couldn't make the trip. However, The Elements did not place in that event, with winning bands added to the Rock N' Roar Festival lineup that August.
Today's post is mostly devoted to assorted shorter news and notes that have piled up in the last week or so, but we're leading off with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for one week from Saturday in Sault Michigan, so here's what you should know on this Sunday evening!
Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Ten Kings will play a unique concert event on Saturday, June 27th when they head to Lake Superior State University for their first ever Summerfest! Fresh off of this weekend's road trip to Manistique, Ten Kings will reportedly be among a few local artists at this event from the local university, which will be a celebration of music on an outdoor stage on the north side of the Cisler Center (the administrative & social building that hosts, among other things, their radio station WLSO.) LSSU's Summerfest will feature food, refreshments, and music from The Steeltown Silver Band at 3:30 PM, but Ten Kings' set will reportedly be at 12:00 noon that day, as per their own Facebook event page. The rest of the performer lineup has yet to be announced, but LSSU have indicated that a full schedule is forthcoming, so we'll let you know when we hear it! Given the theme and location of the event, is is FREE & ALL AGES, but remember that is is on a university.
As an LSSU graduate, I can attest to how nice and inviting the school is, and it should be a solid backdrop for their first ever Summerfest! They always hosted live bands in some form when I was there, but an outdoor festival like this sounds like a good time, so keep it in mind one week from Saturday, and if you're in the Manistique area, go see Ten Kings this weekend at their Kewadin Casino branch!

After scattered hints in recent months, local grunge/hardcore duo Bad Back have apparently completed recording sessions for a new album! As per their Facebook page yesterday, the band confirmed that it's "done", and to "stay tuned" for updates. This won't be their first CD release, as they released two minimally advertised demos at concerts last fall, but this album appears to be more formal and official. Good to hear, so keep posted when more comes in!
Local death metal standouts The Bear Hunters confirmed on their Facebook page on Thursday that recording sessions for their second album "The Dead Testament" will begin in September! The album will feature 11 new songs (including 4 that have yet to be played in concert) and a re-recording of "Deception" from their debut as a bonus track. Other details are forthcoming, but fans should definitely stay tuned as we hear more!
Local hard rock quartet Beaumont Avenue have replaced the aforementioned Bear Hunters on the lineup for the Out Of The Ruins concert at The Rednecks Saloon on July 11th, as per a recent Facebook event page update. The reason is likely due to Justin Lam and Johnny Belanger being out of town with Jack Spades that weekend, more on that in a second. Beaumont Avenue are arguably a worse genre fit, but the former Suicide Kings' all-original set should find a solid audience in their first opening set at a local show since last year's Rotaryfest!
Now-defunct all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats posted studio versions of their original songs "On The Prowl", "Sugar Mama", and "Give Me" onto their Reverbnation page earlier this month, as recorded with producer Jamie Vincent at Six Two Oh (presumably where Bad Back's album is being done too.) The songs sound good, and it's a shame the girls wrapped things up before they could get their own EP released! Check them (and the earlier "Wanted Man") out at the above links!
It no longer bears directly on the Soo, but this year's 17th annual installment of Hempfest (based in Moonbeam, 8 hours north of here, since last summer) will have a tribute band theme like it did in one of the last local installments, with Rush, Rage Against The Machine, and Metallica tributes booked (the latter, Misery, have played here too.) More acts are being finalized, so if you want to take a road trip for this year's Hempfest in August, click here for details!
Local punk/metal quintet Jack Spades will take a road trip to Meyersburg, Ontario (an hour east of Peterborough) over the July 10th weekend to take part in this year's second annual Spiderfest! They also played this event this year, and they'll join such locally notable bands as IDNS, Gatgas, and The Dead Peasants Revolt on the lineup, with the classic comedy metal band Green Jelly headlining. Excellent to see the guys back for Spiderfest 2, and hopefully they jack Meyersburg once again!
There has apparently been construction going on recently at Mill Square to build an outdoor concert stage outside of The Machine Shop, named "The Yard" at present time. The Machine Shop's Facebook page indicates that several outdoor events are planned, as well as big events for next year, plus the hashtag tease of "Bring Back Castle Farms", referencing the famed Charlevoix, Michigan outdoor concert venue. Very intriguing, so we'll keep an eye on this apparent new venue as more comes out!
Local musician Peytan Andreola is looking for a metal drummer to jam with, as per his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post on Tuesday. No word on his music background there, but if you're interested in more details, message him above or at this link!
Recently reunited doom/punk trio The Revolution have quietly dropped out of the upcoming Eternal Prophecy/Lie Among Us concert at The Rednecks Saloon on August 10th, as per recent updates to the Facebook event page. A reason for their exit wasn't announced, but note that they haven't updated their Facebook page in almost two months. Hopefully all's well in their camp! They were not replaced on the lineup, so bassist Jordan Leach's other band Haggith are now the only local openers, and they now have $5 advance tickets, so contact members A.S.A.P.!
While we continue to wait for the reveal of this year's Rotaryfest lineups, their website now confirms that the returning Second Stage's new presenting sponsor is local roadside assistance call-centre Agero (replacing Tenaris, who remain as a sponsor of other events.) As well, their site labels it as "Stage 2 Redirected", but whether that's a new moniker or an accident from website coding is to be announced. We'll let you know when we hear more!

Local classic/hard rock quartet Havadder will return to the stage TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT at The Rednecks Saloon! Apologies for the short notice, these shows were only announced via their Facebook event page yesterday, though personal Facebook posts hinted at them in prior days. These will be Havadder's first concerts since drummer Scott McLurg's recent heart attack, and while he's on the mend, the guys have enlisted Peace Vibe/Flat Stanley drummer Glen Thomas (who, like Scott, is also a Wishbone alum) to handle the skins for this weekend's shows, similarly to when he filled in for then-drummer T.J. Case at a few gigs last fall. Good fit, and nice of Glen to step in during Scott's recovery! Yes, we know of the upcoming fundraiser for Scott coming up later this month, that's coming in our next post. This weekend's Havadder shows are otherwise business as usual, with 10:00 PM start times, no announced cover charges, and 19+ age limits.
As the saying goes, the show must go on, and hopefully Havadder and Glen have a solid weekend of classic hard rock action for fans at the former Nicolet Tavern this weekend (and get well soon, Scott!) See the above links for more details, and here's Havadder (with Glen, incidentally) last fall!
Next up, new local pop punk quartet Stereo North will play a unique event TOMORROW when they rock Mill Market at Mill Square during Habitat for Humanity's Great Dog House Build! Again, apologies for the short notice, the band only confirmed their involvement in the event on their Facebook page on Wednesday. Making their first concert appearance since last month's River Jacks concert, Stereo North will reportedly be playing three sets from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM during this charity event, where teams will unveil doghouses that they built in recent weeks, which will be judged and auctioned off in the afternoon, with some proceeds going to help spay and neuter animals in the area. Nice cause, and Habitat For Humanity do great work on their own as well, so consider a trip downtown to see the completed doghouses and Stereo North as well! For the sake of clarity, the event is advertised as taking place at Mill Market, not The Machine Shop on the same site, but this does return Stereo North to the site of their live debut!

Lastly for late notice show announcements as of this writing, live bands will once again rock this year's third annual Algoma Ride For Autism motorcycle rally during their Family Fun Day events TOMORROW at Runway Park, including pageless local hard rock quartet Late Shift, veteran punk trio Redundant, and acoustic hard rock solo artist Tym Morrison! Apologies once again for the short notice, bands only confirmed their involvement online in recent days, though the Family Fun Day event page confirmed bands as late as April (apologies again for missing that entirely.) Not unlike Ride For Sight, this event features a motorcycle rally through town starting at 11:00 AM to raise awareness and funds for the Algoma Autism Foundation, and the Runway Park activities on Airport Road will include vendors, games, prizes, children's activities, and more, so be sure to check the above links for full details on what to expect and how to get involved in the rally itself, be you a rider, supporter, or both!
In terms of the bands, this will be Redundant's first concert appearance of 2015 and second straight at Algoma Ride For Autism (great to see them back!) and Late Shift's first shows that we've heard about since February (though remember, they don't have a known online page), while this adds to Tym Morrison's busy weekend, especially given that he's not at The Harp tomorrow night. Admission is FREE & ALL AGES tomorrow morning and afternoon, so check the above links for more details! Kudos to the artists for jumping on board this great cause, so hopefully a lot is raised for autism awareness and programs again tomorrow! Closing with a previously announced show taking place TOMORROW NIGHT, local all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats will play their farewell concert sets at The Rankin Arena during tomorrow's Border Brawl roller derby event! After a successful year-and-a-half run in the local scene, the girls will hit the stage for the last time before Kate Kougar's move out of town during halftime of tomorrow's roller derby games between Ontario and Michigan teams, with the first featuring the area's own Nord Starz. If you don't know the connection as to why The Danger Cats are playing at this sort of event, both Jamie Jaguar and Calico Katie are involved in Sault Roller Derby, so they're a solid fit on that basis! No word on if they have anything special planned for tomorrow, but their halftime sets are likely taking place at around 7:00 & 9:00 PM, given the scheduling of the two games at 6:00 & 8:00 PM. Roller derby is a fun and physical sport that is getting quite a following in the area, so give it a chance if you're up for some live entertainment tomorrow evening!
Note that The Danger Cats are not playing at the advertised afterparty at The Rockstar Bar tomorrow night, Cherry Crush are. After taking Sunday off from most site activity due to my birthday, we're back in full force for the first of two posts today, and yes, our review of Saturday night's Jack Spades/Destroilet concert is coming later on today! Videos and photos from the show are already up on our Facebook page though. Today, we have assorted shorter updates, a new video, and a surprise new album release, but first, here's a special Monday night concert preview for TONIGHT!
The latest Six Two Oh (the former Oh! Right Arm Promotions) concert goes down TONIGHT, as local punk and alternative rock bands will open for Edmonton garage/blues rock quartet The Archaics at The New American Pub! Essentially a reprise of last July's Archaics-headlined show from the same promoters, fans of the headliners' entertaining hybrid originals and noticeable skill will be happy to see them back, even if they're not a "heavy" sounding band! An expanded local opening lineup from last year will see The Archaics joined by local alternative hard rock trio The Pixo Control and post-punk quartet Gnaeus both making their New American debuts tonight, while local all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats making what will be their last regular concert appearance tonight due to their impending breakup. Though fans can still see them at The Rankin Arena on June 13th during the Border Brawl roller derby event, consider coming out to see the girls one last regular time TONIGHT before it's too late!
This 19+ concert has a $5 cover charge, and everything will start at 10:00 PM. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be a fun concert, especially to check out the talented opening roster (you know how good The Pixo Control and Gnaeus are) and to send out The Danger Cats in style, while The Archaics' blues rock sound will be a great capper to the evening! Next up, we have a new album release to take note of, as Haggith drummer Mike Haggith's 49th official solo CD "The Warinside" is officially now on sale via his Bandcamp page! Though the physical release will still take place on July 3rd at his release concert at The Rednecks Saloon, the digital download copy is now available on Bandcamp on a "name your price" model as of yesterday, which is a nice surprise bonus for the preceding month! Now that it's on sale, what should you know about it? Still alternately spelled as "The Warrenside" to reference the ongoing inside joke in the liner notes, the album details personal events in Mike's life from last year, and each song was written entirely by Mike save for "30", which was co-wrote by bandmate Curtis McKenzie, who also guest performs as a guitarist or backing vocalist on all but 4 songs. The album was mostly recorded at Galactic Records in Windsor save for "30", Curtis' parts and all vocals, which were done locally at PaperClip Productions.
The 10 song album will apparently cost $5 in physical formats, but on Bandcamp, you can pay any amount for it (including nothing, but support Mike and buy the album!) With the early release, we'll now tentatively confirm that "The Warinside" will be our next review subject at The Sault Metal Scene, so watch for that in the coming weeks, and pick up Mike Haggith's new solo album at the above links!
Also today, here's a comical new video from local/St. Catharine's grimecore trio Shit Liver, as posted to their YouTube channel on Friday! Entitled "How To Go On Tour", the video is a light-hearted (and fast-paced) look at what appears to be frontman Josh Penno, if I have the arm tattoos identified correctly, packing up gear & possessions for their tour. Amusing little video, but I was a little surprised that it didn't lead to a teaser of future concerts given the tour theme. Check it out below, and stay tuned for more!

Local rap/metal band The Apocalypse Afterparty have indicated on their Facebook page that they're "not dead", indicating that they've been busy writing an EP that will apparently come out "this year on a label you know and love" (perhaps confirming their earlier Tidal Records tease?) The band's also apparently training new members (note the plural: are they expanding, or do they need more than just a new drummer?), and are apparently writing a comic. Ambitious plans are afoot, so keep posted at this link!
Infamous/Deviant guitarist Damon King is apparently looking to join a local band, hyping himself as "an experienced rock/metal/blues/soul/alt guitarist who can do harmony." No word on if this means anything for the status of his existing bands, but he does have a lot of skill (as seen at the VM Radio Battle), so message him at this link or via his Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from yesterday for more info!
Regarding the apparent absence (or cancellation?) of recent Mourning Wood Thursday jam nights at The Rednecks Saloon, members Terry Eaton & Steven Flint's live sound company Twin City Entertainment apparently were in Blind River this past Thursday to do sound at a Garth Brooks tribute concert, which will have an encore presentation this Thursday as well (source here.) No word yet on whether this means the end or just a temporary break for Mourning Wood's jam nights, but we'll keep you posted!

Before we tackle weekend concert previews and our next CD review, let's touch on some news and notes from the Sault Ontario side of the border, including big updates on an upcoming album and release concert, and a popular local band's apparent final weeks, but first, here's a new local band you may recognize from some recent concert announcements!
Remember Id Iota, the new band debuting at The Algonquin Pub next Friday? Well, they finally have a Facebook page, so we can tell you more about them! Their lineup features ex-Free Beer frontman Christian Lemay (of Shaw TV fame) and guitarist Dustin Goodall alongside bassist Justin Girardi (who I couldn't find recent band credits for) and ex-Dirty Few drummer Blair St. John. You may recognize all but Justin from the band Habitat Shuffle, who released an EP last year alongside fellow Free Beer alum Ryan Gray, but they never played live, and judging by the quiet deletion of their Facebook page, that project is presumably now defunct. There's no clear indications yet of Id Iota's sound, but for what it's worth, Habitat Shuffle played more of an alternative rock sound than Free Beer's old ska-punk material, but if they skew close to either, they'll fit the SMS well!
Recently seen recording material at Tidal Records' own Mission Control Studios, Id Iota will join fellow debuting local band Caroline Divine (more info forthcoming) at both next Friday's Gonqshow event and at the next day's Lopstock II at LopLops Lounge, as they're the last and newest announced band, and are in the opening 1:00 PM timeslot (source here.) It's great to see Id Iota getting a quick start to the concert game where Habitat Shuffle didn't, so stay tuned for more on them as it rolls in, and they're now in our band links, with their predecessors moved to our inactive links, albeit under their Bandcamp page now!
Next up, it looks like local all-female hard rock/punk quartet The Danger Cats are disbanding in the near future. As per a post on their Facebook page on Monday, the girls revealed that their set at the Archaics-headlined concert at The New American Pub
this coming Monday will be our "last chance to see a full set" from
them, even referring to it as their "last hurrah", though they are still
playing halftime mini-sets at the Border Brawl roller derby event
on June 13th. Though not stated there, the breakup is at least
partially due to frontwoman Kate Kougar's upcoming move to London, and
they'll presumably be removed from the lineup of October's Dusty Tucker concert
at The Rednecks Saloon as well. I was hopeful that The Danger Cats
would stay active in some form after Kate's move, but they've had a good
run that's seen them get lots of positive attention and quickly rise in
the local scene since their 2013 debut!
Hopefully
everyone stays active in music after next month's shows, and best of
luck to Kate, Paula, Jamie, Katie, and Summer in whatever comes next,
but they're not done yet, so make sure to see the girls before it's too late on Monday and on
June 13th!
Finally for this post, we'll touch on some recent updates relating to prolific local hard rock musician Mike Haggith including the latest on his upcoming studio album "The Warinside" and it's release party on Friday, July 3rd at The Rednecks Saloon, so what should you know? In terms of the release show's lineup, local solo musician Micheal Husband is the surprise final opener for the show, and he'll kick off the night's events at 9:30 PM. He is credited as among the PaperClip Productions artist roster, and he's apparently a singer/guitarist, but we don't know much about him at this point. This should be a good showcase for him though! Instead of the announced three opening bands, there will only be two (Micheal and jazz rockers The Wild Iris), as headliners Mike Haggith & The Din will instead play two sets: one of them playing "The Warinside" from start to finish, and the other of extra originals and covers, not unlike what The Bear Hunters did in November.
Also, spellings of the album's name as "The Warrenside" are frequent on Facebook, but that is reportedly just an inside joke that is explained in the album booklet, and the CD's title's spelling is officially still "The Warinside". Ticket prices have also been announced, and they'll be $5 in advance, $7 at the door, or $10 for admission + a CD upon entry, though details on ticket availability will be announced in the near future. This is by far the biggest launch ever given to a Mike Haggith solo album, and everything sounds like it's shaping up well, so keep everything in mind for July 3rd, and see the above links for more details! As for "The Warinside" itself, Mike has uploaded final copies of the remaining songs from the album ("Out Of My League", "30", and as embedded below, "Someday") onto his YouTube channel, complete with a full playlist of the full album to boot! For reference, Mike's Haggith/Din bandmate Curtis McKenzie assists in the production on all 3 songs, and guest performs on all but "Someday".
We won't review these songs here yet, as we plan to review "The Warinside" in full this summer (likely in July after the release show), but check out the new songs and full streaming copy of the album above and below, and for you Haggith fans, look for our review of "Apocalypse" by week's end!

Both only recieved short notice plugs on personal Facebook accounts a few hours before showtime at The New A, and as we couldn't rush a new news post in time to plug both, we covered them on our Facebook page. Had we recieved more advance word on both, we'd have definitely plugged them here, but our apologies either way! Now, today's post features new videos, a recent album release, and a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, so here's what you should know!
Local all-female hard rock/punk quartet The Danger Cats will rock The Rankin Arena at 17 Batchewana Street on Saturday, June 13th during... a roller derby event?! Yes, the girls' second announced show of the summer will come during Border Brawl, a Sault Roller Derby event that will see two games between Ontario and Michigan teams (with game 1 featuring Northern Ontario's own NORD Starz.) If you're not familiar with roller derby, it's a fun and physical game that the whole family can enjoy, so give it a look online to see if this is up your alley! Danger Cats frontwoman Kate Kougar confirmed in personal e-mails that they'll be playing during halftime of both games, so with each starting at 6:00 & 8:00 PM, their mini-sets will presumably be at around 7:00 & 9:00 PM. This may seem like an odd show for a local band to play, but some of the members are involved in local roller derby events, hence the connection. (Calico Katie even designed the poster!)
Admission is $10 at the door or via advance ticket sales through derby players, while kids under 12 get in FREE! Also, note that there's an afterparty at The Rockstar Bar too, but if The Danger Cats (or any other band) are playing it, nothing has been publically stated yet. Next up, here's some overdue notes on a recent album release, as local hard rock/grunge quartet Haggith released their newest CD "Apocalypse II" on May 9th prior to their set at that night's Swampstravaganza V! Apologies for the delay in getting this on the site, it fell through the cracks way too much. Released a day earlier than anticipated, "Apocalypse II" is the band's fourth full length studio album and second in their "Apocalypse" concept series, as recorded over the past year+ at PaperClip Productions. The album features (in various lineup arrangements and instrument roles) the band's late 2014-early 2015 lineup, including singer/guitarist Curtis McKenzie, ex-guitarist Daniel Horton, bassist Jordan Leach, and drummer/vocalist Mike Haggith, though only Daniel is credited on all 10 songs, and his Project 421 bandmate Frank McGillivray is credited with playing guest guitar on the three "Home" tracks.
We'll close today with new videos, including this clip of Bad Back drummer Nathan Sauve tracking drums for a guest spot he's doing for an upcoming Rotopsy track! As uploaded to his YouTube channel on Monday, the overhead video features him tracking his part in a speedo (as he pointed out), and it sounds good to add to a Rotopsy song! While a little monotonous, live drums top a drum machine and help give more of the full band feel to their goregrind intensity, and it'll be interesting to hear the final product! Finally, here's a new solo instrumental recording by prolific Sault native and Alberta metal guitarist Paul Melanson! The first upload to his YouTube channel in 5 months, the song is called "Split the Sphere", and it's a well recorded and performed original song with a nice solo and strong songwriting! His recent hard rock and cover work in Lethbridge is solid, but it would be interesting to see him tackle a full metal project like this again. Give his new video a look below, and see more above!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to offer our deepest condolences to the family & friends of Mike Case, a fixture of the local music scene who passed away on Sunday after a lengthy battle with cancer. Local news sites will have more information, including on services when available. An inductee of both The Great Northern Opry & The Northern Ontario Country Music Hall of Fame from his work with local bands like White Stallion, Mike was the founder of local music store Case's Music, and he was instrumental in their music lesson programs and youth camps, helping teach many aspiring musicians there and previously at Arnill's Music for decades. I didn't know Mike personally, but by all accounts, he was a kind, helpful, and intelligent presence for musicians old and new alike, a proud supporter of local business, and a talented musician in his own right. Even after falling ill and ceding control of Case's Music to his nephew Jay in 2010, Mike's influence continued to be seen from who he taught, including via his youth all-star bands of the early 2010s.
I remember seeing Mike, visibly having trouble walking, still there on stage at Toystock last November helping his Junior All Stars through their set on the big stage at The Canadian, and his passion for music and helping the next generation was clear as day even then. Our thoughts are with Mike's family (including his children T.J. and Vanessa) and his many friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Mike, you will be missed!
Now, the rest of today's post is devoted to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, all with two common bands in their lineups, so here's what you should know in chronological order! We'll start on Friday, May 8th with a concert event featuring 4 local bands rocking The Rednecks Saloon that promoters are calling "Redneck Rock"! A reunion of sorts from last month's VM Radio Battle of the Bands, this show will see winners Gnaeus and runners-up The Bear Hunters take the stage alongside semifinalists Project 421 and The Danger Cats, which is somewhat notable as being the first show at this venue for all but The Bear Hunters, so keep that angle in mind as well! As of this writing, the performance order is not yet confirmed, but each band will play 45 minute sets. Promoted by Mourning Wood's Steven Flint & Terry Eaton (who are also providing sound with Twin City Entertainment), this 19+ show will kick off at 10:00 PM.
As for Redneck Rock tickets, they are available through the bands only (not promoters, oddly) for $5, but the entry fee will jump to $7 at the door. For more details, visit the above links! This should be an interesting show, especially for fans of the VM Radio Battle and these four talented bands, and I wonder if we'll see more multi-band concerts like this from Terry & Steven to come? Watch out for more details as we approach May 8th!

Fans may remember The Archaics from headlining at The New A last July (a show that The Danger Cats also opened) as well as from Das Bunkerfest, and while their sound isn't "heavy" so to speak, they have a fun old school garage sound that fans should take to once again! Solid local contingent opening this show too, with The Pixo Control & Gnaeus' skilled originals a nice compliment in their own New A debuts, so don't miss any of the local opening action on June 1st! Promoted by Oh! Right Arm! Promotions (though they oddly didn't create the Facebook event page), this 19+ concert has a 9:00 PM start time, and there's a $5 cover charge. Finally for today's new show announcements is our first confirmed heavier/punk show of the fall, as Red Deer, Alberta southern hard rock quintet Dusty Tucker will make their local concert debut on Wednesday, October 8th at The Rednecks Saloon! Delivering an aggressive and energetic blend of southern rock and metal, Dusty Tucker should deliver a great stage show this fall, and be sure to check them out in the interim! Once again, local support will come via the aforementioned Gnaeus (who will actually be in the headlining slot, likely due to Dusty Tucker's scheduling commitments) and The Danger Cats, while one more local band is to be announced. For what it's worth, this show comes after Danger Cats frontwoman Kate Kougar's teased move to London in August, but it's not clear yet what impact that will have on this show, if any. A rare non-Bear Hunters concert promoted by Mitch Sirie, this 19+ event will reportedly have a 9:00 PM start time and NO COVER!

Postings also reveal that guitarist Jamie July will be "back in full force", after missing their last show with an illness, so keep that in mind! heard about this show via The Rockstar Bar's Martin Fiser on their Facebook group yesterday. A one nighter for unannounced reasons (country cover
band Thin Ice are playing there on Saturday), this will be RPM's second
announced concert at this venue of the year, following a Saturday
nighter in January. We don't hear a lot from Dino, Marcel, Lindsay, and
Ben, partly as they don't have any online pages, but they've been
gaining their own local profile, and Lindsay's past bands are a good
sign, so hopefully RPM have a great show tomorrow! Bring $5 for a cover
just in case, a 10:00 PM start time is likely, and you must be 19 to

and see more from RPM at some point!
Lastly for the weekend concert previews, we'll add local hard rock solo musician Tym Morrison's April concert slate at The Harp Bar & Grill to our listings! Apologies for the short notice, but we were waiting for official confirmation outside of Tym's website, which hasn't came as of this writing, but his website's calendar is usually reliable. Tym is scheduled to rock the former Madison's Pub TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT, followed by shows on April 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th, and 24th & 25th, and while there is a UFC PPV on the 25th, Tym did play The Harp on the night of the last UFC PPV, so we won't assume he's not playing then until we hear otherwise. For what it's worth, Tym's scheduled bookings on his calendar end on Friday, May 1st, but whether that's his Harp run's end date or just when his last updates ended is to be determined. Either way, look for Tym to deliver fun hard rock and metal covers to fans this month!

Local doom/punk trio The Revolution have officially reunited after a month-long breakup! The band revealed the news on their Facebook page on Tuesday, also confirming that work will resume on their debut EP "Roll Call", and they'll begin tracking it next week. Great news, so hopefully Austin, Jordan, and Brandan pick up where they left off in short order, and they're now back in our active band links!
Sault Michigan metal trio Tantrym Tyme have apparently staged a "lock-in" since Tuesday with the intention of writing and recording songs towards a debut full length album. As elaborated on their Facebook page this week, the guys have laid down all of their tracks save for vocals and some guitar riffs, and will finalize them today, with preliminary plans to release a four song album (including one cover) and do this again in the summer. Very interesting, so stay tuned as we hear more on Tantrym Tyme's recording plans!
