YouTube Channel Profile Series: DogRun Stray

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profile, as we again shine a spotlight on a (as usual) randomly selected YouTube channel whose content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk musicians/concerts! This monthly feature takes us to a prolific and familiar face in the local metal and punk community, albeit not his most recent YouTube presence, so here's what you should know for this month!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DogRun Stray (http://youtube.com/@dogrunstray1905)

Owner: Local folk punk/extreme metal singer/guitarist Chase James Wigmore, also known from projects like The Strange Coyotes, This Is Your Band On Drugs, Them, Project Legion, The Autumn Roots, The Black Lodge Masters, The Coyote Speedfreaks, Manitou, and Squirrelboy & The Smiling Giraffes

Channel Timeline: Launched on June 26th, 2012; Videos uploaded from August 2013 through July 2022

Channel Summary: Chase's official YouTube channel for most of his musical projects for the better part of a decade, almost four dozen videos are uploaded here, including studio tracks, live (mostly at-home) performances, full albums, and lots of material linked to his Black Lodge Masters project in particular. A few videos lean more to comedy as well, including his first upload, where he added a smooth jazz soundtrack to old CBC footage of Pierre Trudeau.

Why You Should Watch: This is a must watch channel for fans of Chase's prolific and very skilled solo output, and there's loads to see and hear here from his folk punk, metal, and experimental sides from the mid-2010s onward! However, he largely moved over to a new eponymous channel launched in January 2021 for his more recent videos, though the two channels did co-exist with new uploads for a year and a half. Also, note that Chase does upload unique video content to his Facebook page that was never featured on either YouTube channel

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

The Sapphoerotic Asphyxiations of Shannon and Linda: The only video here of Chase at a formal local concert comes from Heavy North Entertainment's inaugural event, which took place on January 24th, 2014 at the former Oddfellows Hall. This all-local show featured nine acts, including Chase solo and the final gig by his old hard rock trio The Strange Coyotes of their original run. Joined here by bassist James Watterworth (ex-Blackwater) on saxophone and then-Din frontman Mike Haggith on drums, The Coyotes are seen here playing their long experimental original "The Sapphoerotic Asphyxiations Of Shannon & Linda" with Chase playing violin, and you have to take their word on it given how dark this video is. This is definitely more for fans of discordant noise rock, especially thanks to the largely spoken word vocals, but it shows how creative this band was in their heyday! A free upload of The Strange Coyotes' first album can also be heard here.

Running Out Of Beer - Chase James Wigmore: The most popular video on Chase's "DogRun Stay" channel is his non-album original song "Running Out Of Beer" from March 2018. A lo-fi folksy number with a bit of a country sound, the song is obviously about what the title suggests, but Chase elaborates as to what happens as the beer currently being drank is depleting, specifically what happens if you happen to have picked up a girl that same night, and desperately want to stay drunk as problems escalate. I do prefer Chase's heavier and more produced material, but fans of his more reserved folk side will take this this original, which does stand out among the pack on this channel!

She Crawls Towards It - CxJxWx (from Seven Curses 2018): Of the multiple solo performance videos of Chase on this YouTube channel, one of my favourites in a metal context is this December 2018 video of him playing "She Crawls Towards It" from his YouTube-exclusive album "Seven Curses", with the original studio track playing in the background. Despite grainy webcam visuals, fans of black metal will absolutely take to this intense and brutal at-home performance, with Chase vamping for the camera as needed while playing along with one of his heavier songs from one of his heavier albums, even if it stalled as a free YouTube upload!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! This series will keep on a single channel trend when our next randomly selected channel is that of YouTube user LionelRocks, featuring 16 videos of late 2000s-early 2010s glam metal quartet Dirty Virgin! Watch for that on or around September 26th, and for more news on the site next! Thanks everyone!

Tarnished, Project 906, And Chase Wigmore News & Videos!!

Let's cover some recent news and updates on the SMS today, primarily from a pair of notable hard rock bands in the E.U.P., but there is lots of recent stuff to touch on from a prominent Sault Ontario musician as well. Hopefully there's more where this came from, but here's what you should know!

Here's the latest (non-TikTok) updates from Sault Michigan hard rock band Tarnished, starting with a surprise lineup change, as they have officially parted ways with drummer Gary Croad. Unlike in their prior drummer departure last year, the band did elaborate on their Facebook page on Thursday, where they implied that Gary made the call to leave, as "he's got his own path to follow", but they praised him and the great ride they've had with him. Gary was confirmed as Tarnished's new drummer in May of last year, replacing Tommy Korcal behind the kit, and he played with them at the Rock The Block concert in July, but he only sporadically took part in their videos posted to social media. Tarnished hinted that Gary "got in with Project 906" (if true, ironically replacing Tommy again), but that has not been confirmed by Project 906's camp at press time. We'll keep you posted on if that proves to be an accurate report or not!

Gary's a solid musician, and while he did seem to be somewhat detached from their social media videos, he will be missed, and hopefully we hear from him again soon! Before Gary left, he did feature (at least) one more time with Tarnished in their fourth "Friday Sessions" appearance on 9&10 News' lifestyle newsmagazine series The Four last week! Here, they played their original song "The Path", in a similar setting to their prior CBS performances, but here with more stage lighting. Solid work as usual, and if you missed The Four on channel 10(.1) last week, check it out at the above links! I can't embed videos from 9&10 News' website here.

Next up, here's a new video from the aforementioned Project 906's Facebook page! Apologies for the delay on this clip, which was uploaded on Christmas Eve, but it remains their most recent posting there (again, no word on if they did switch drummers as of this writing). Around three weeks after posting a Chris Stapleton cover as part of a planned "Songs From The Bedroom" solo performance video series, frontman Billy Bernier returned with a new video, this time not visibly in a bedroom, and this time of a new 906 original song! Entitled "Where's The Love?", this acoustic vocal/guitar rendition is obviously incomplete from how the band will play it, but it has a bluesy rock base that fits their usual sound, and it's well sung! That said, I'd have framed the camera better, too much dead space in the top half. Give Billy's new video a watch below, and stay tuned for more from Project 906!

Now let's head north to Sault Ontario for the latest from prolific local singer/guitarist Chase Wigmore! In a lengthy post on his Facebook page on January 17th, Chase revealed that he has a new full length acoustic album ready to be recorded, and while he was in the process of scheduling record time for it, he hoped to finish it within two months. Later in the post, Chase noted that he is planning to release "The Chase James Wigmore Collection" for sale on USB sticks, featuring his entire solo discography, from raw early trials to his more refined and seriously approached work of more recent years, as part of three volumes. He is currently in "Volume 3" of his solo career, which he teased "will probably be the end" of his solo work, but he never plans to stop playing guitar. Hopefully that's not too finite, he still has a lot to offer musically! Chase also teased further work with The Strange Coyotes, who reunited in late 2019 for a one-off gig at the Dryer Fire pop-up venue, but the pandemic is obviously in the way.

At the end, he noted that he's working on writing a book about the guitar, under the title "Ars Cithara" (which stands for "The Art Of Guitar"), and Chase called it "the single most important project I will ever work on" and "perhaps even my life's purpose." No pressure, clearly, but I'd be very curious to read this when completed! The other note from this post regarded his side project Awokest's new album "Beyonder", which had recently been mixed after some prior technical issues, and two weeks later after this post was made, the album came out as promised as a free upload on his new YouTube channel! If you like Chase's electronic and industrial works with a tinge of extreme metal, you should take to "Beyonder", especially as it's free, though this is a primarily instrumental album. Give Awokest's new music a listen below, and stay tuned for more from Chase's camps when it rolls in!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes on the site next week, plus our latest Defunct Local Band Profile on Monday or Tuesday! Thanks everyone!

Squatfest Concert Preview, Plus A New Live-Streamed Concert!!

Let's close up our first true hard rock concert weekend in the Soo in over four months by previewing a big outdoor house party event tomorrow night, with a live-streamed concert to round things out! Here's what you should know!

With the hard rock concert schedule in Sault Ontario easing back into operation this week, here's the first public multi-band event in the pandemic era, as lots of Blood Shed Productions-affiliated artists will congregate in nearby Heyden TOMORROW NIGHT for Squatfest! To be held outdoors at 5 Dixie Drive (near Christie's RV; look for Nessie), promoters have confirmed that this is a publically attendable event with paid admission, despite the Facebook event page being set to private. Similar in spirit to the Oh!No festival in Leeburn, attendees are welcome to camp at the Squatfest site, enjoy the outdoor amenities on the property, stay overnight, and even come by tonight for a planned bonfire jam and to help set the stage up. Promoted by Blood Shed owner Tyler Gibson and assorted collaborators, a huge lineup of familiar and somewhat newer acts are slated for tomorrow night at Squatfest, so who all can you expect? I will go in order of listed acts on the event page here.

Four solo acts are listed at the top of the event page's lineup, including ex-Brutally Fatal/Revolution frontman (and Blood Shed co-founder) Austin McCrae in a rare solo set, former Honest Job frontman Mister Tahti, prolific folk/punk musician (The Ghost Of) Chase James Wigmore, and Tyler's drum-and-bass side project Alegendary. Chase will reunite with Strange Coyotes bandmate James Watterworth for that funk metal band's second reunion set tomorrow night, while Blood Shed-affiliated death metal one man bands Black Cloud and Tyler's own Crucify the Whore will also take the stage. Party/rap metal trio The Apocalypse Afterparty will make a rare live appearance at Squatfest, as will rappers Joonas "JSK" Kamula and Austin's rap alter ego Miracle Man. Lastly, the Strange Coyotes will split off into two more solo acts, including James' scarcely seen solo set, while Chase will deliver some extreme metal under his Awokest handle. More unadvertised performers are also planned, we'll let you know if we hear anything.

This presumably all ages event has a 12:00 PM start time, and while a $5 admission fee was previously advertised, it is no longer referenced on the event page. Band and Blood Shed merchandise will be on sale, food and drinks will be available (please don't bring glass bottles), and while Tyler is asking attendees to respect the area and stay clean and on the property, nothing directly references social distancing measures, but of course, please use common sense. This sounds like an ambitious but fun event, especially if you love the Blood Shed roster of artists, so consider a trip up to Heyden tomorrow for Squatfest! For a preview, here's Chase live!

Finally for today, let's get into local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison's 34th live-streamed concert, which took place on Tuesday on his YouTube channel! I won't lump yesterday's live-stream in here as it was at a separate location (the Motley Market, host of his Thursday matinee gigs this month), but I am currently planning to hold that one for when we preview his show there next week. After blocking external embedding privileges of his last 7 live-streams, that quarantine has quietly been lifted, so this episode is embedded below! Again, I hope it wasn't because of anything I said or did. Yesterday's live-stream begins about 7 minutes in with a Spanish guitar instrumental, which seems rare to lead off these at-home shows with, but it's well performed as usual! The covers proper lead off with Berlin's "Take My Breath Away", Supertramp's "Breakfast In America", Amy Holland's "Shooting For The Moon",  ...

...Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive", Bryan Adams' "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You", The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle", and Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart", before Tym played an original song named "The Hardest Stone", which he originally did with his old Hollow bandmates. Tym next tackles Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver", before dipping into the instrumental well again with an adaptation of a classical piece, followed by a cover of The Beatles' "Rocky Raccoon", a partial version of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons' "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)". and two Days of the New songs ("Shelf In The Room" & "Touch, Peel, and Stand"). After playing a lengthy original instrumental, Tym finished with covers of Chicago's "Hard To Say I'm Sorry", Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven", and The Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun". Fun set with lots of classic and occasionally heavy cuts to check out from this talented local veteran!

There did seem to be more chatter between songs with the live viewers, but Tym offered good insights into certain songs and his compositions! However, fans who aren't as into instrumentals may not like their extra focus here, and the Bryan Adams and Jim Croce songs were repeated from last Thursday's live-stream. For the first time in almost a month, give this live-stream a watch below, and stay tuned for his Thursday show in an upcoming post!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates on the site next week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Squatfest) & A New Solo Performance Video!!

Kicking off a new and hopefully a much busier (and more positive) month at the SMS, we have a new solo clip to check out, but first, we have a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for the Sault Ontario area, believe it or not, and much sooner than you think! Here's what you should know!

Over four months after the Sault Ontario concert calendar ground to a halt, Blood Shed Productions head Tyler Gibson is planning to host a outdoor concert festival called Squatfest on Saturday, August 8th (one week from today!) The Facebook event page is set to private, but Tyler confirmed there that the show is publically attendable and will have paid admission. To be held at 5 Dixie Drive in nearby Heyden (down the road from Christie's RV; look for the Loch Ness Monster statue), this seems to be formatted similarly to the Oh!No festivals, even down to encouraging attendees to stay the weekend and partake in outdoor activities in the vicinity. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic isn't over yet, and while this is outdoors, use common sense if you take the trip north next week. The stacked lineup includes a lot of acts shared between prior projects, many with ties to the Blood Shed label, so I'll be deviating from the Squatfest's advertised artist order here, and it is subject to change.

Tyler himself will perform as his grindcore solo project Crucify The Whore and as his drum & bass side project Alegendary, while his frequent collaborator Chase Wigmore will be performing as himself (presumably doing his folk/punk originals) and as his extreme metal project Awokest. As well, Chase will reunite with Blackwater alum James Watterworth for The Strange Coyotes' second reunion set, though I have yet to hear publically if the band proper is back beyond one-offs, let alone if they will be formatted similarly to their December acoustic gig. James will apparently also play a solo set, much like he frequently did in the early 2010s. Blood Shed co-founder Austin McCrea is scheduled twice for Squatfest, including a regular solo set (perhaps doing Brutally Fatal or Revolution material?) and as his scarcely seen rap alter ego Miracle Man. The remaining acts are not shared elsewhere, including ex-Honest Job frontman Mister Tahti, death metal project Black Cloud, ...

...party rap/metal trio The Apocalypse Afterparty, and rapper Joonas "JSK" Kamula, who has collaborated with Chase in the past. More yet-revealed acts are also advertised, we'll let you know if they are announced next week. Squatfest is an ALL AGES event with a recommended $5 donation upon entry, and merchandise from Blood Shed and performing acts will be on sale. Camping is welcomed, and while food & drinks will be on sale, Tyler is asking attendees to not bring glass. As well, Tyler is welcoming possible attendees to come to the site as early as Friday to hang out, jam at a planned bonfire, and help set up the stage. Given the climate with the pandemic, any ambitious multi-band concert like this would have to be outdoors due to indoor space limitations and what have you, and Squatfest seems like a workable alternative, if under somewhat limited notice! If you love Blood Shed Productions and Tyler, Chase, James, and Austin's back catalogues, this will be well worth a trip north to Heyden, so see above for more details!

Finally for today's post, here is a new solo performance video from ex-Brain Tuel guitarist Zach Reid's YouTube channel, as posted last month! An instrumental acoustic number, this folksier song is well done (if a little repetitive down the stretch), and it's nice seeing Zach still working on some new music during these crazy times. Give this video a look below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post on the site tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

More Offspring Concert Videos, Plus A Recent Live Clip!!

Tonight, let's finally look at the rest of the publically posted videos from last month's Offspring-headlined concert at GFL Memorial Gardens, plus a bonus live video from last week! I had held off on covering the rest of the Offspring videos as I was waiting to see if any more footage popped up, but we've waited more than long enough now. All of these are of the headlining California punk legends, as only one public channel filmed either of the openers, which we covered already on here. We'll start with local concert promoters Live705's video for their Facebook page (they got some photos too), where they filmed The Offspring's first four songs, namely "Americana", "All I Want", "Come Out & Play", and their new track "It Won't Get Better". Nice and close angle, the footage looks and sounds good, and they make use of the camera zoom when needed, so fans will want to check this one out below!

Next up, let's head to YouTube, where Wawa-based author Duane Roy (of "Castle Stories" & "Soo Stories" fame) uploaded three videos from The Offspring's set onto his channel, in his first local concert uploads since The Tea Party's show here in February. Two of Duane's videos are fairly short, namely of the songs "Gone Away" & "Why Don't You Get A Job", but embedded below is their local rendition of "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)", as preceded by guitarist Noodles praising Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario for it's sexiness. Filmed from the seats to the stage's right, the stage is well lit and the audio mostly holds up, so give these a look above & below!

Lastly for Offspring videos that I know of, here is a 20 second clip uploaded by YouTube user Gary Robertson during their performance of "Bad Habit". Aside from the very beginning and end, this focuses on a young attendee (perhaps a relative?) air-drumming to the song, and he definitely has energy! The music sounds good while it lasts, so give this a look if you want below!

Finally for today, let's head north to Sault Ontario for a video from local funk/metal band The Strange Coyotes reunion gig at Dryer Fire's pop-up venue on Bruce Street on Thursday! Filmed by the promotional agency's Facebook page, this minute-long video answers a few questions about how the band would look in 2019. Specifically, they played an acoustic two-man set with Chase on vocals & guitar, James on the hand drum rather than bass (nice gloves!), and no replacement drummer in sight. Effective and intense performance while it lasts, so give it a look below, and time will tell if this proves to be more than a one-off gig!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews and more updates soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Strange Coyotes & The Wyld Stallyns) And Weekend Concert Previews!!

With the holidays approaching ever faster, we have a busy weekend of concerts ahead, so we are breaking this weekend's previews into two posts. Bands with advance notice gigs on Saturday (re: Theatre of Night, Soundcheck, and Tym Morrison) will be covered in our next post, but for now, let's dive into bands involved in SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, plus one-nighters today and tomorrow. Here's what you should know!

Local funk metal band The Strange Coyotes will reunite for the first time in over 5 years TONIGHT at the temporarily re-opened Dryer Fire pop-up venue at 128 Bruce Street! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced via singer/guitarist Chase Wigmore's solo Facebook page last week. This is not the first time that this band has announced a reunion, as Chase and bassist James Watterworth had planned to reunite for Chase's cancelled Devil's Night concert last year, but TONIGHT's show looks to proceed as advertised. It's great to see them back, but details are admittedly scant on the Facebook event page. As Mike moved out of province, will there be a new drummer? Are any other acts playing? Is this a one-off reunion, or can we expect more Strange Coyotes gigs in 2020? In any event, this is the only metal-featured concert in Dryer Fire's two week return engagement on Bruce Street, and this show has a 6:00 PM start time, a "pay what you can" entry model, and no age limit, as usual at the pop-up gigs.

The Strange Coyotes had a fun and eclectic set during their original run that produced two albums, and whether or not this is a full time reunion, it will be cool seeing Chase & James back to do their thing again TONIGHT! Visit the above links for more details, and here's The Strange Coyotes live! Also, Dryer Fire are now linked in our "Other Local Metal Links" section (not with concert venues due to the short-term rental nature of the Bruce Street locale.)

Next up, local acoustic hard rock trio The Wyld Stallyns will return to the stage THIS SATURDAY NIGHT when they rock The Whiskey Barrel! Again, apologies for the short notice, this concert was only announced via it's Facebook event page on Monday. The Elements' side project had taken a three week break while singer Christina Speers acted in the local production of Cats (as the band promoted on their Facebook page), and this will be their first public concert set at the Gore Street nightclub since The Whiskey Barrel's first anniversary party on November 16th. A stop at their arguably favourite public concert venue should be a great way to shake off some cobwebs, so don't miss The Stallyns' eclectic cover selection on SATURDAY! As usual for their shows here, expect an 8:00 PM start time, no cover charges, and a 19+ age limit. Visit the above links for more on their return to the stage, and here they are live!

Moving on to shows with advance notice, let's take a brief detour to Sault Michigan, where local hard rock band Tarnished (or members thereof) will continue their "every Thursday" arrangement at Biggby Coffee TODAY! Another afternoon's worth of hard hitting and classic covers should be in store for coffee-shop patrons and fans alike, and whether you're getting Alex alone or Alex with Nathan or Josh, you should be in good musical hands! As usual for this long-term run at the Ashmun Street business, today's show is a 12:00 PM matinee with no cover charge or age limits, but remember that Tarnished traditionally play here for tips (and coffee.) Visit the above links for more information on today's show if it comes in, and here's Tarnished live!

Finally for today's previews, let's head back to Sault Ontario, where local classic/hard rock cover quintet Fluid 5ive will return to The New American Pub TOMORROW NIGHT! As previously announced via the venue's Facebook event page, Fluid 5ive actually did update their Facebook page after a three month break to plug this show, as well as an apparent concert at The Marconi Event Centre on Albert Street West one week ago. Given the nature of the hall and the events it tends to hold, plus the lack of advertising on social media for any Marconi Club concerts last week, I am inclined to believe that was a private event, but I'll let you know if that assumption is wrong. In any event, I'm glad to see that the 5ive are using their Facebook page again, you'd think they would want to given their uptick in gigs to end 2019! As usual, tomorrow's New A show is a one-off due to the venue's Saturday karaoke nights. An 8:00 PM start time is in effect, you must be 19 or older to attend, and there is no cover charge. See above for more details, and here's Fluid 5ive live!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for our Soundcheck, Theatre of Night, and Tym Morrison previews on the site next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The Truth Of All Death, Frightlight, And The Strange Coyotes!!)

Before we round out our Oh!No festival fallout, we have a post completely devoted to LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS today, one on SHORT NOTICE, so here's what you should know for your fall concert plans!

Local alt-folk musician Chase Wigmore is returning to the concert promotion game with a special New American Pub show THIS TUESDAY NIGHT, to be headlined by Toronto grindcore band The Truth Of All Death! Apologies for the short notice, this show was only announced last Tuesday, too soon to fully cover the show without this preview being a rehash. The Truth Of All Death should pique the interest of Blood Shed Productions loyalists with their minimalist grind/noise onslaught, short songs, and provocative subject matter, so if this is up your alley, give The T.O.A.D. a listen above in advance of their local debut on TUESDAY! Blood Shed's flagship solo grindcore project Crucify the Whore will open in a rare New A set, while the only other advertised act is Awokest, who I have no information on whatsoever. The chance exists that this is a new project of Chase's, given that he's not advertised with a solo set, but that's purely conjecture on my part. We'll let you know if public details on Awokest come out, or if potential added acts are confirmed!

Though the venue is not directly cited on the Facebook event page, The New A's Facebook page confirms that they're playing host. A $5 cover charge is in effect for TUESDAY'S 19+ concert, which has an advertised 8:00 PM start time, though that may just be the door opening time. If you've missed grindcore concerts locally, this should whet your appetite for the subgenre, so keep this concert in mind for TUESDAY NIGHT, especially if Chase's talk of bi-weekly concerts comes to fruition! Here's The Truth Of All Death live!

Next up, here's some Halloween season concerts with lots of advance notice, starting with local promoter J.D. Pearce's 14th straight year of Halloween party concerts, as he's back with a second straight double header on Friday, October 27th & Saturday, October 28th at... Soo Blaster?! After spending 5 of the past 6 years at The Algonquin Hotel, J.D.'s Halloween party (alternately known as "The Howling") will move to Soo Blaster for 2018, marking our first ever punk/metal concerts covered at the new restaurant, arcade, and live events venue at 345 Queen Street East, which was previously home to Woolco and the RMH/NCO call center. Soo Blaster has made waves in the past year with hip hop concerts and stand up comedians, but how will it handle aggressive live bands? This year's roster will be tribute-focused for a fourth straight year, with the Friday the 27th lineup featuring unidentified tributes to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, H.I.M., and The Distillers.

I can't confirm complete identities for the three bands at present, but personal Facebook postings indicate that Jack Spades/Stegadeth guitarist Tiffany Stocco will be performing in the H.I.M. and Distillers tributes. Will one/both of her bands take on either guise, or will these be one-off supergroups? Time will tell! Both are relatively unique bands for covers here, but the Chili Peppers aren't as shocking. Will this band share any relation to the late 2000s local tribute Sikamikanico? The lineup on Saturday the 28th will feature tributes to Tool and Weezer, and while HTs bassist Ryan Disano & Redundant frontman Justin Langlois signalled their involvement in each tribute via personal Facebook postings, I again don't know whether the tribute bands will be reskinned existing bands or one-offs. However, we do know the Saturday headliners by name, as defunct local horror punk quintet Frightlight will hit the stage for the first time in four years that night! How's that for a spooky surprise? Will they focus on Misfits covers to go with the theme?

Frightlight were a steady fan favourite band in their original 2009-2014 run, and while I can't confirm the makeup of their 2018 reunion lineup, look for the guys to deliver one more high impact fright night next month! Sponsored by Northern Superior Breweries, this year's Halloween party concerts are 19+ affairs with 10:00 PM start times, and each night's admission is $10, but there will be a $15 weekend pass for both nights. Things are shaping up for a great weekend of live music action at a new-ish locale next month, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and we'll let you know when we hear more on the band identities and ticket availability!

Finally, here's one more seasonal concert for late next month, as the aforementioned Chase Wigmore is bringing live metal music back to The Oddfellows Hall after well over a year away, with a Devil's Night concert planned for Tuesday, October 30th! After the abrupt relocation of his last try at an Oddfellows concert, things have a lot more advance word this time, so hopefully there's no hang-ups next month! A spiritual successor to Blood Shed Productions' Devil's Night concerts at the same venue in 2013 & 2014 (Chase played both), he is hyping up the "mash-up" nature of the lineup, with a variety of metal and folk acts on display next month, so who all is playing? As per the Facebook event page, we'll be blessed with a Haggith-less reunion of 2013-2014 funk metal band The Strange Coyotes as the apparent headliners! Nice to see Chase & James back together after far too long, though no word yet on if this will be a one-off, or if they'll have a drummer present. The remaining performers are all solo acts, though more bands could be added.

Alongside the aforementioned Crucify the Whore, fans can check out Chase's own solo project (with an apparent "folk punk rock opera" in store), creative local pianist Damjan "Spider Fingerz" Binda, and new local alt-folk musician Wes Armstrong (not Anderson), who you may have seen at Chase's Rednecks show earlier this month. This ALL AGES concert has a presumably incorrect start time of 3:52 PM (I'd guess it'd be later), while admission fees have not yet been confirmed. Nice mixture of Blood Shed collaborators coming back for another Devil's Night, plus some new sounds, so visit the above links for current and continuing details as they roll in!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and updates on the site this week! Thanks everyone!

AlgomA/Chronobot Split Release Information, Stereo North Updates, And Much More!!

Before this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post makes it's way to the site, let's keep the news rolling on this Saturday morning, so what's on tap? Some assorted recent updates, new covers from a recent album release, a local punk band's recent songwriting sessions, and to start, full details concerning a brand new and long awaited vinyl release, so here's what you should know for today!

Local doom metal trio AlgomA's split vinyl EP with Saskatchewan doom metal band Chronobot was officially released as planned yesterday, so what should you know on it? Put out through Dead Beat Media and with cover art by Adam Geyer (similarly to AlgomA's debut "Reclaimed By The Forest"), this is AlgomA's second release and Chronobot's third, following their own solo debut and a separate split. As previously announced, the split features two tracks from AlgomA and three from Chronobot, but given that one of the AlgomA songs is almost eight minutes long, their respective run-times are comparable. Digital copies of the split are available at AlgomA's Bandcamp page for $6, but full copies of the 12'' vinyl record (pressed in blue!) are $20 there, and they'll also be on sale during the Black Tremor/punk rock bingo concert at The New American Pub on Wednesday, so keep all of these purchasing options in mind! Also, AlgomA have dedicated the split to late local metal musician Sabrina "Strange" Pelchat, as per pictures of the liner notes.

Also, Sven Mihlan of the blog Doom Metal Front previewed two more songs via Soundcloud from the split in this article, namely AlgomA's "The Electric Fence" and Chronobot's "Jerry Can", leaving only Chronobot's "Sons of Sabbath" unpreviewed in this fashion (No Clean Singing previewed the other two.) As for our review of the split, you can definitely expect it this month, date to be established, so check the above links for more details on this release, and don't miss AlgomA at The New A on Wednesday!

Next up, here's the latest from local pop punk quartet Stereo North, who have been preparing their own original material since their VM Radio Battle of the Bands set last month, with a Facebook page posting earlier this week implying that the band is aiming to have enough setlist material to play 3 sets worth for solo concerts. Not a bad idea, Project 421 had made the move to play shows of that length themselves recently, so we'll have to see how a full night of Stereo North works! Also, the band shared this video from frontman Andrew Pucci's personal Facebook page of him demoing a planned original song for the band, tentatively named "Echoes", with the aim being to include this on their debut album. Sounds good so far, but it obviously isn't complete, and Andrew admits in captions that a Matthew Anich guitar solo at a key moment would be essential. Give it a look below, and stay tuned for more from Stereo North!

Also today, newer local experimental hard rock solo project The Coyote Speedfreaks posted a new video onto mastermind Chase Wigmore's YouTube channel on Wednesday, and it's of ...."Strange Coyotes 3"?! As you may recall, his former band The Strange Coyotes posthumously finished the live album recorded at their final concert in November 2014 in February of this year, but Chase wasn't behind it's final release, and online postings implied that he wasn't in favour of it. As he noted with a Futurama reference on the Speedfreaks page, "War were declared", so he responded by covering three songs from the Coyotes' album/set ("I'm Gonna Love You" with an adult title change, "Sneeze", and "Kaylore"), all of which started off of James Watterworth's own solo songs, though Chase re-interpreted some lyrics if he couldn't make out the originals. Performed acoustically but with Chase's trademark chaotic & unpredictable presence, it's fun to hear him perform these songs again, and to give his own interpretation of these songs, so check them out below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or event name:

  • The Gorod/Bookakee-headlined concert on Friday, April 15th has been relocated from The Algonquin Pub to The Oddfellows Hall, and is consequently now an ALL AGES show! Promoter J.D. Pearce noted on the Facebook event page that The Algonquin Pub "won't be ready in time" for April 15th, but it's not publically clear what's going on with the pub. With the new all ages venue, doors will now open at 7:00 PM, and J.D. may be adding an additional local opener, so see the above links for more details on this relocated metal show!
  • After 4 years of local band involvement in the Rock 'N Roar Battle of the Bands in Spanish, there were sadly no local bands registered to compete in tonight's edition of the event, as per the official Facebook page for the annual Spanish concert festival, which will be held in August. The Soo's not completely shut out though, as ex-Sykotyk Rampage bassist Brian Cattapan's Sudbury band Aggressive Acoustic will be the first performers tonight, so best of luck to them as they look to place high and earn an opening slot for Big Sugar or Haywire this summer!
  • Local goregrind duo Rotopsy will end their nine month concert hiatus as the final local openers for the Reanimator-headlined concert at The New American Pub on Sunday, April 24th, as per the official Facebook event page! Given Tyler & Dylan's usual concert frequency, it's odd that they've been off stage for this long, but Rotopsy should fit in well with Reanimator and Pillory next month! Stay tuned for more!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post next! Thanks everyone!

The Strange Coyotes - "Strange Coyotes II" CD Review!!

It's now time for our 80th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene (and first of the year from a Sault Ontario band), as we're looking at defunct local experimental/improv metal trio The Strange Coyotes' posthumous second & final album "Strange Coyotes II"! Surprisingly released on February 16th through PaperClip Productions, this album is the delayed realization of plans to record & release a live album from their final concert at Sault Band-O-Rama at The Primavera Banquet Hall on November 21st, 2014, with six posthumous filler tracks recorded earlier this year at PaperClip Productions. The album features singer/bassist James Watterworth (a.k.a. Delusionair Lionhair), drummer Mike Haggith, and singer/guitarist Chase Wigmore on the first five full songs, but he had to drop out afterward due to illness, and was replaced by Crucify the Whore mainman Tyler "Ringsnaps" Gibson (who played the same concert with Rotopsy) on guitar for three songs. As well, all but one of the filler tracks feature Mike alongside his former Haggith bandmate Jordan Leach as a guest performer.

Physical copies can be bought through the label for $5, while digital copies are available on a "name your price" model via their Bandcamp page, but support the band and consider buying a copy! With 16 songs running for about 33 minutes, let's kick things off with the first song, "Kaylore"!

Starting with a fun improvised bass solo from James, this is a familiar song from his own solo concert sets, with the band in their usual freewheeling funk/metal style here! Featuring a fun sing-along chorus and a swing-ish rhythm, it works well in this live recording, which was well done at the soundboard to capture minimal background noise. James' falsetto vocal moments don't come through as clearly on the choruses here like they did live, but everyone's on form musically, with Chase laying down some solid guitar riffs and licks, and Mike keeps up well on drums, adding up to a solid and fun start to the album! The first filler track, entitled "Bolvine Warp Speed", is next, and it transitions from low, cow-sounding effects to comical dialogue from Mike & Jordan, with other sounds thrown in for good measure. There's not much to say here, but at 54 seconds long, they definitely didn't waste that time!

Third is "Slap 'N Tickle" from the concert recording, and it's an up & down number with effective instrumentation from the guys, especially in between the choruses, showing nice creativity on the fly on the guitar & bass, as the title would imply! However, the vocals (I believe from Chase) aren't overly loud in the mix until he starts yelling late, and the chorus instrumentation seems a little up-tempo compared to the improv-funk that surrounds them. That's followed by "Change", which has a bit of a blues influence on this James-sung number that has some heavy chorus work, melodic jam guitar, and nicely paced drumming! I think the low vocals sound a little forced at times, and the words aren't as clear here as they could be, but you get more of a sense of James' singing range here than on "Kaylore". It's arguably the heaviest song yet on "Strange Coyotes II", and it's a nice sampling of the three guys in their element!

Song #5 is the second filler track, "Shepherd's Pie Stew", which is just five seconds of what sounds like backmasked & filtered dialogue, plus other effects. If there's a message here, I can't detect it, but given it's length, it still doesn't add much to the CD. Next is an 83 second "Sax Jam" from the Band-O-Rama event, with James breaking out his saxophone for this number, which is largely an instrumental aside from random screams. It's fun for it's length, and has a clear energy, but I have to admit, the saxophone isn't all that loud here. The third filler track is next, entitled "Swallowing Band-Aids", and it continues the odd experimental tone of the first two, with random instrumental segments, sped up vocalizations, and background effects running for 35 seconds. It's not boring, but it's very hard to explain in detail (in other words, it fits with the other fillers!)

The eighth track on the album is "I'm Gonna Love You", another import from James' solo repertoire, and it turns out well in a full band form, with his bass plucking and Chase's strong guitar soloing meshing well! It has a catchy rhythm, and Mike's mini-drum solo at the end is a nice touch, but the lyrics could be a little more diverse, and the song seems to go by a little fast compared to how I recall it from concerts I attended. Still, this is a solid number, and effectively fills things out in the process! Another 2016 filler track is next, that being "Townhouse Seven", which features multiple recitations of "Townhouse" over some guitar instrumentation and added effects, running for 31 seconds. Another peculiar addition to the album, but again, it's not boring!

Tenth is "Best That You Can", which also comes from James' solo sets, and marks Tyler Gibson's first credited appearance during the set/album after Chase had to bow out. He mostly provides some guitar noodling to bookend the song, but it holds up well as a mid-tempo number with a catchy cadence.and It isn't the heaviest of James' own songs, but it's a solid sing-along track all the same! Then we have "First Time Donor", which is more of a straightforward jam rocker that has a bit of a Sykotyk Rampage feel at times, and involves Tyler more on guitar than "Best That You Can" did. It doesn't have as much of the freewheeling feel that the songs with Chase had, but it's a steady rocker with a nice driving riff and some solid jamming from the three, and it has potential if cleaned up a bit!

The album's second-last song from The Primavera Hall concert is "Sneeze", which is also a fan favourite solo original from the Delusionair himself,  and is also the longest song on "Strange Coyotes II". More than any song yet, this largely comes across as a solo performance that Mike just happened to be guesting on, with no discernible guitar input from Tyler here. I don't know if James ever plans to release a solo album of his own, but this gives a nice glimpse of his creativity and bass talents, with the song rarely sticking with one sound for too long, and while guitar would have filled it out more (not to mention clearer vocals), it holds up for fans! The curiously titled "Somewhere on the Ship of Mutant Moon Cows in the Slop" comes next as the last of five filler tracks involving Jordan Leach, and it features random pitch-shifted dialogue and randomness that will leave you guessing, even at 24 seconds!

The last filler track, entitled "Weird Wolf" (apparently from Mike solo) follows with a 64 second stream of consciousness of effects, random vocals, and backmasking, though here, I can actually discern clear words when this is played in reverse with Audacity (though the track doesn't make a lot more sense than it does in regular playback.) The live concert portion concludes with "Colourful Daydream", which features James, Mike, and Tyler going into a doomy jam style with a relatively intense chorus, strong guitar improvisation, and a good & steady drum beat to fit the proceedings. It's not as chaotic and random as the songs with Chase, but they came through to end their set in a solid fashion! The album closes with "The Worst Band", which basically amounts to their concluding remarks at the end of their Band-O-Rama set, complete with some self-deprecation. At just 16 seconds, it doesn't really stand on it's own, so why not just combine it with "Colourful Daydream"?

So, what are my final thoughts on The Strange Coyotes' posthumous live album? It's a little uneven, but it's an entertaining look back at this fan favourite trio that definitely broke up too soon! Compared to their 2013 debut (which featured new studio originals), this features songs that are more familiar to fans from both their own and James' solo concerts, obviously so given it's a live album, and it has extra familiarity on that basis. Everyone performs well, with James Watterworth showcasing his bass skill and vocal range, Chase Wigmore performing strongly with some creative guitar solos and riffs, and Mike Haggith holding up his end of the bargain on drums! The recording quality is solid too, but the vocals could often be either low in the mix (as was James' saxophone), or not all that clear when trying to make out lyrics. While the Chase half holds the album's best overall moments, Tyler Gibson admirably filled in late, though it'd have been interesting to hear him on "Sneeze" or with some more vocal input.

The six filler tracks, on the other hand, are entertaining in a bizarre sort of way, but they just feel like an exercise in filling 5 minutes of an album while being random for the sake of being random, and interrupt the flow of the otherwise live album that we have here. Overall though, the live songs give us a strong sampling of The Strange Coyotes from their 2014 reunion, and they hadn't lost a step at the time! Fans will definitely want to check this out, and you can do so at the above links! I hope you guys liked this month's CD review, but what's on tap for March? At this point, I'm unsure, but be sure to check out this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post on Wednesday for a sampling of upcoming metal, hard rock, and punk albums, as you never know when one might come out! If nothing new is released, I'm leaning towards reviewing either Haggith's "Apocalypse II" or "XIV" (to tie in with members' shows next month in their current bands) or Integrated System of Machines' self-titled 2015 CD (to tie in with Chris Leask's shows with Highway 63.)

Be it Haggith, I.S.O.M., or something new, look for our next CD review next month, and for more news, notes, updates, features, and more as we begin the month of March! Thanks everyone!
