LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Din), Sault Michigan Weekend Concert Previews, And More!!

For our second weekend concert preview post (barring any super-late notice concert announcements), we're touching on two big shows going down in the Sault Michigan area tomorrow, but to round things out, we also have some assorted recent updates, and a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for Sault Ontario later this year, so here's what you should know!

Local alternative hard rock trio The Din will headline a launch party for their long awaited debut CD "Give In To The Din" on Friday, August 12th at the auditorium at The Tech! After months of anticipation, their debut studio album will finally go on sale at this show taking place at the former St. Mary's College, which may seem like an unusual spot for the release, but remember that The Din previously played there at the Sky's The Limit benefit show, so they have experience there. Local post punk/garage rock quartet Gnaeus will make their Tech debut as openers on August 12th, with their friends at Tidal Records apparently providing some promotional support as well, and they should provide excellent support for the release show! This ALL AGES event will have admission via $5 ticket purchases, which you can get at the venue's box office and/or members of both bands (and presumably at the door), while there is a group rate of $15 for a group of 5. In any event, as this is being held in the auditorium, there is assigned seating, so get yours early for the best seat!

Doors will open at 6:45 PM for this concert, and while there will be albums and other Din merchandise on sale, the band has yet to elaborate on prices for the CD. With a full two months of promotion and hype ahead, this should be a huge show for The Din as they launch their CD, and with Gnaeus in tow as well, fans won't want to miss out on the action! Visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and stay tuned as updates roll in!

Next up, here's this weekend's known Sault Michigan-area concert previews, starting with the local debut of Detroit-based Kiss tribute band Detroit Rock City when they headline at The Soo Theater TOMORROW NIGHT during the venue's Raise The Roof Summer Concert Series! Our first hard rock concert preview there in many years, Detroit Rock City are the second of five bands (and only heavier act) playing at the Ashmun Street theater during this concert series, where The Soo Theater, in association with Moloney's Alley, are putting all proceeds towards reviving the theater as a year-round events & concert venue. Obviously, these are big stakes, so hopefully all of the series' concerts were/are huge hits to help get The Soo Theater in full for both historical and entertainment reasons! As for Detroit Rock City themselves, they'll bring an authentic stge show and sound that Kiss fans will surely enjoy, so if you want to enjoy the next best thing to Gene and company, be at The Soo Theater tomorrow night!

Admission for this and all other Raise the Roof series events is $15, and while advance ticket sales are no longer available online, you can still apparently buy tickets locally at the theatre or at Moloney's Alley for this and the other shows in the series, which lean toward Michigan indie and folk acts. Sadly, this is a 21+ event, but doors open at 7:00 PM tomorrow. This should be a fun concert for fans of Kiss and Soo Theater restoration supporters, so don't miss the action, and here's Detroit Rock City live last year!

Also for weekend concert previews, local hard/blues rock quartet Project 906 will return to Pickles Bar & Grill in Brimley TOMORROW NIGHT! This one-nighter is the band's first show there since last year's Bay Mills Bands Together fundraiser, and first anywhere since their trip to Strongs two weeks ago. The Ten Kings successors have been on a strong streak in recent months, and I'm sure they'll have another big night of hard hitting covers in store for fans tomorrow in Brimley, so keep this show in mind for after the Detroit Rock City show in the Soo! And remember, Project 906 will be back there for another one-nighter next month on July 16th. There's a 10:00 PM start time for this 21+ show, which has no announced cover charge. Curiously, there's two Facebook event pages, so click here & here for full details, and here's Project 906 live at Pickles!

Finally, here's three assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • New local death metal quintet Kaepora Gaebora have been added as the final opening band for the Foam-headlined concert at The New American Pub on June 19th, as per the official Facebook event page earlier this week. Solid choices to kick off this show, so don't miss them, Twistory, and Foam a The New A one week from Sunday!
  • We have moved local punk/classic rock trio Leaked to our inactive band links due to a year's inactivity. Featuring The Din's Tammy Hill on guitar, Leaked played a handful of Korah Collegiate events in mid-2015, but haven't updated their Facebook (and only online) page since sharing a concert video on June 6th of last year. Leaked were a talented rising band, and hopefully we see them again at some point, but don't miss Tammy with The Din!
  • According to personal Facebook postings, local classic metal quintet Project 421 played their set at last weekend's Redneck Rock Bash 2 sans frontman Curtis McKenzie due to illness. As a result, the band played with guitarist Blair Burch on lead vocals for most songs (a'la their original gigs), but Tym Morrison, Mourning Wood's Terry Eaton, and ex-Amethyst drummer Phil Temperao all provided guest vocals for at least one song each. While it's disappointing that Curt had to miss the show, this would be a nice surprise for attendees, and hopefully someone got some videos!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (The 3 Day Millionaires), Sault Ontario Weekend Concert Previews, And A New Video!!

Another weekend is upon us, so here's out first weekend concert preview post! With a few Sault Michigan hard rock shows known for Saturday, including one big out-of-town headliner, we'll hold them for tomorrow's post, as well as any potential late notice confirmations, so don't worry, they're coming! Now, here's what you should know for this weekend in Sault Ontario, including a newly posted concert video to fill things out!

Local classic/hard rock cover quartet The 3 Day Millionaires will return to the stage for another weekend of hits TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rockstar Bar! Apologies for the short notice, the band only announced these shows via the official Facebook event page on Tuesday. Though The 3 Day Millionaires are two weeks removed from their last Rockstar Bar shows, members Travis Sharpe & Scott McLurg are entering their third straight weekend at this venue, following shows there with their sister band Havadder last week. The guys have been staying busy this weekend, and their hard and classic rock favourites should find another strong audience TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so keep both shows in mind! There's NO COVER for this weekend, you must be 19 or older to attend, and both shows have 10:30 PM start times. See above for more details, and here's The 3 Day Millionaires live!

Next up, we'll move to previously announced concerts, including the ongoing weekly concert arrangement at Gliss Steak & Seafood from local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison, which continues as usual TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! Though Tym hasn't posted Facebook event pages for this weekend's shows as of this writing, they're surely coming for these latest gigs in his long-term run at The Quality Inn's house restaurant, and fans of his skilled acoustic covers should be ready for another busy weekend at Gliss! As usual for his run of matinee shows there, 6:00 PM start times are to be expected for these shows, and while there's no announced cover charges or age limits, remember that this is a sit-down restaurant. See above for more details, and here's Tym live!

Also, Tym will be keeping busy with one more show this weekend, as he'll return to Runway Park THIS SATURDAY as part of the musical entertainment at this year's Family Fun Day for the Algoma Autism Foundation's annual Algoma Ride For Autism motorcycle rally! Tym will join local punk trio Redundant (in their third straight appearance at this event), so if you've missed seeing Redundant live in the past year, this might be worth checking out for them alone! Like in past years, this fundraising event coincides with the annual motorcycle rally to raise awareness and money for autism charities, a'la the Ride for Sight, so whether you want to ride in the city-wide rally or just support the cause, see the above links for complete details! Alongside the above artists (no one else is publically advertised), family entertainment at Runway Park on Saturday will include live vendors, a sensory play area, costumed character meet & greets, blow up bouncy houses, food, and more, so there's a little something for everyone!

The Family Fun Day is naturally ALL AGES, and will be held outdoors, and while there's no admission fees, bring cash just in case, especially if you're not riding in the rally yourself. Individual music set times aren't listed, but the event itself will begin at 11:00 AM. This should be a fun event as usual for all ages, and there's some solid entertainment for hard rock and punk fans to enjoy as they support the Ride for Autism, so visit the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Redundant live!

Finally, here's a new live concert video from local doom metal trio AlgomA, courtesy of their set opening for Shit Liver during the punk rock bingo event at The New American Pub on December 23rd! This was only uploaded to the band's YouTube channel on Tuesday, with the delay possibly being due to editing together the multiple camera angles, one stationary from beside the stage, and two held by attendees in the crowd. The video features AlgomA playing their original song "Failed Stunt Fatality" (which isn't on any of their physical albums yet), and crushingly doing so, which you can check out below in this well edited clip, and visit their Facebook page for full details on their upcoming Ontario tour run, which will see them share the stage with familiar bands like The Golers, Archelon, and Striker later this month!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for Sault Michigan previews and more next! Thanks everyone!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Skull After Betrayl

With news slow lately, and not wanting to force a post when weekend concert previews are so close that can use extra content if need be, we'll instead get this month's Defunct Local Band Profile up a little early! Our monthly feature post on a local metal, hard rock, or punk band that's no longer active & functioning again gives us a randomly selected group for this month, but like last month, I misjudged the amount of content and media for our next selection, so this month's planned second band (Hoist the Sails) will lead off a joint profile next month. Now, here's what you should know for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Skull After Betrayl

Genre: Death Metal/Hardcore

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members:

Mike Vincent (Troubled Mind, The Bear Hunters), vocals/guitar
Justin Polutanovich (Borderline Divine), guitar
Adam Brett (Troubled Mind, Despised Eyes), bass/vocals
Anthony D'Agostini (The Dead Kings), drums

Audio/Video: Though their Facebook page has since been deleted, six original songs and a cover of Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" survive as demo or live recordings on Skull After Betrayl's Reverbnation and MySpace pages. For videos, frontman Mike Vincent has shared a couple of jam session videos (sans guitarist Justin Polutanovich) on his YouTube channel, while our YouTube channel features a handful of videos from their live heyday, including this video of the guys playing their song "Zombitch" at their last concert in July 2011 at The Rosie!

Info/Analysis: Skull After Betrayl (not "Betrayal", the spelling was intentional) succeeded the defunct Despised Eyes to become a rising sight at local metal concerts upon their debut in early 2011. The band opened for The Dayglo Abortions & Titan's Eve at the former Roosevelt Hotel during their height, and took part in the first annual Swampstravaganza, before suddenly disbanding in July. After 3/4ths of the band briefly regrouped as The Dead Kings with additional members, Skull After Betrayl reunited that October, but accomplished little before disbanding for good in the spring of 2012, with members Mike Vincent & Adam Brett later forming Troubled Mind in 2015. Skull After Betrayl were a work in progress during their run, with the guys never finding a lasting subgenre, and Mike's singing and Adam's bass technique not as refined as they could be, but they showed promise on some big stages, and hopefully everyone stays active musically!
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile, even if a few days early! This series will return on or around July 10th with inactive Sault Michigan hardcore band Hoist the Sails as promised, but as I'm very certain this time that they don't have enough info or media for a solo profile, we've added a Sault Ontario band to fill things out, and through random selection, we have chosen The 12 Gauge Ready, the popular local ska punk outfit who, despite their successes, have extremely little surviving information online, hence why they'll fit a double profile. Look for this next month, and stay tuned for weekend concert previews next!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Gnaeus), A New Local Metal Band, And Much More!!

With the first full week of June now in progress, let's clear out most of our backlogged news stories, along with two lead items: A LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this month, and first, a new addition to our Sault Ontario band links, so here's what you should know!

We have a new local metal band to add to our band links, and they are Kraken Mara, a new progressive metal band from Sault Ontario featuring a pair of familiar faces! Kraken Mara marks the return of former Late & Loud guitarist Brendan Christie & bassist Benn Garside after a two year public absence from local music, with the guys being joined by guitarist Jacob Valois, who's new to the Soo's scene, but used to play in the Wawa bands The Palm Trees and Exiled Earth. No sign yet of a lead singer or permanent drummer, and while Brendan sang lead for many Late & Loud songs and for the short lived Hydra's Teeth, it's not clear if they immediately intend on adding a singer. Kraken Mara have been active since at least April (apologies for the delay), and the band is apparently already recording their debut EP, as per their Reverbnation page, with bands like August Burns Red, Animals As Leaders, and Dream Theater cited as influences.

Harbouring the closest similarities with Brendan's inactive solo project, Kraken Mara eschews his and Benn's recent classic/speed metal influences in favour of progressive & djent metal, and there's a lot of promise so far on the three songs posted on Reverbnation ("Chimera" and a two parter named "Grand Machinations"), with strong, crushing, and technical guitar work, but live drums would be an asset, and the production could be beefier on the earlier songs. Very promising band to start, so hopefully we hear much more from Kraken Mara soon, and see above for more on them!

Next up, here's that LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as local post punk quartet Gnaeus will return to the stage on Saturday, June 18th when they open for Whitehorse, Yukon folk project Old Cabin at LopLops Lounge! After a couple of months off, Gnaeus should have a strong set in store as they near the release of their debut CD "Meditations" (more on that soon, hopefully), so prepare yourselves for their garage punk originals in two weeks! Touring in support of their 7'' vinyl disc, Old Cabin (fronted by Saultite Jona Barr) should get a great reception in their long awaited return to our neck of the woods, so if you want some well written and performed folk rock, don't miss Old Cabin later this month! The other opening bands include local/Ottawa indie rock project Great Chamberlain and The Dirty Princes, a power pop quartet from Sudbury who I don't recall from past local shows. Nice diverse lineup, so keep everything in mind for June 18th at LopLops!

Promoted by Ears & Eyes Online's Jackson Reed (the brother of Old Cabin's Jona Barr), this 19+ show has a $10 cover charge, and doors will open at 8:00 PM. For more details, visit the above links, and hopefully this is a strong show for fans of folk, indie, and alternative rock, with Gnaeus bringing a dash of punk to the proceedings as well!

Finally for today, here's six assorted shorter news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist or venue name:

  • Gabriel Pesek of the metal website The Burning Beard reviewed local doom trio AlgomA's recent vinyl split EP with Saskatchewan's Chronobot yesterday at this link. He didn't give a score, but he positively praised both band's halves of the split as "a solid introduction" to newcomers, especially compared to the tech/death metal that he's tended to see come out of Canada. Not a bad review, so give it a look above!
  • Local hardcore punk quintet Destroilet's cover of The Rebel Spell's "Murderers" (originally seen on last year's "Fed Up!" split CD) is going to be included on an upcoming Rebel Spell tribute album called "Rebels Sing"! In memory of late frontman Todd "Serious" Jenkins & with proceeds going to his family, the massive 30 song compilation will include songs from such locally familiar bands as Propagandhi and The Royal Red Brigade, among many others. This is great to see, so pre-order your copies of "Rebel Sings" above!
  • In a surprising find, the message board for defunct local bar/concert venue Foggy Notions (now Coch's Corner) is still online and available to check out! The forum was lightly used for about 6 months between 2003 & 2004, and features some discussions relating to local metal & punk bands and concerts at both Foggy's and beyond. It's an interesting read for local music fans who were around the scene 12 or so years ago, so check it out above, and it's now in our message board links on the SMS!
  • The original crash band, Sykotyk Rampage, have released two more free "albums" to their Reverbnation page! One is entitled "Alarm Alarm" and was posted in April (apologies for the delay), while the other is "Kock Block Rock", which went up this past Wednesday. Featuring 11 & 12 songs each, these are full of Sykotyk Rampage's irreverent & improvised "blue Chinese metal crash punk", so give them and much more a listen above!
  • In a new posting on local musician/Gore Street Cafe co-owner Sam Decter's blog The Tinderbox, he revealed that local punk/grunge solo project Telephone & Address will be putting out an album called "Are You or Have You Ever Been?" through his new local label BGP Tapes, which strongly hints at putting out new material from local artists on cassette tapes. It's unclear what this means for Chris' yet-released albums "Monster" & "The Early Tapes", but remember that Sam & Chris briefly planned to collaborate as a band under the similar name Are You Now? or Have You Ever?. We'll let you know when more is elaborated on!
  • Vancouver "apocalypse rock" trio War Baby have been added to the lineup of Six, Two, Oh.'s punk rock bingo event at The New American Pub on July 12th! Despite being an out of town band (the show is late in their summer tour of Canada), they are currently listed as the opening act, behind the debuting local band Gianni Gagoots. War Baby's punk-influenced, fast paced aggression should be a nice addition to this concert/bingo night next month, so keep their local debut in mind for then!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes this week! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Foam And Telephone & Address), And Archive Concert Photo Notes!!

For our first full news post of the month, we're splitting things down the middle for two specific topics: An easier way to check out some of our earliest concert photos, and first, LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for two summer shows at the same venue, so here's what you should know!

London sludge/punk trio Foam will make their local concert debut on Sunday, June 19th when they headline at The New American Pub! Citing many different genre influences, Foam's grungy, hard hitting, noise assault should get a solid response from fans in two weeks' time, so don't miss out! Local death metal duo Twistory (featuring ex-Pillory bandmates Josh Amendola & Robert Sartini) will make their New A debut as openers on June 19th, and while they still don't have an online page, fans have been receptive to their sets since debuting, so check out their attack as well! At least one more local opening band is to be announced, and we'll let you know when they're confirmed. Promoted by Six, Two, Oh., this 19+ concert will have a $5 cover charge and a 9:00 PM start time. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page, and don't miss the Grave Party show there the very next day!

Next up, local punk/grunge solo project Telephone & Address will also rock The New American Pub this summer, as they'll be opening for Hamilton blues duo Frankie & Jimmy on Wednesday, July 13th! A rare appearance by Chris Shoust's acoustic solo act at The New A, this will be Telephone & Address' first set since their Fortnight Festival appearance at The Gore Street Cafe, and with Chris' talented and experimental originals in full effect, he should set the tone well next month! Frankie & Jimmy's bluesy yet avant garde sound has a lot of creativity going for it, and they should leave a good impression when they make their local debut next month in the second stop of their Western Canada tour! Apparently promoted by Chris, this 19+ show has a listed 8:00 PM start time, but a cover charge isn't given on the Facebook event page (have money on hand just in case.) Fans of acoustic rock and experimental music should like this show, with Telephone & Address handling the punk side of things, so see above for more details!

Finally for today, I wanted to note on here that I've done something that I should have done a long time ago: Move old concert photos from our inactive Facebook group and inactive Photobucket page to our current Facebook page! I've meant to migrate them over for a while, but only got around to doing it yesterday, but to make it a little more special and more in line with our concert photography work since, I fixed the lighting or colour on the photos where needed, and straightened out camera angles where possible. These shows took place between 2007 & 2009, early in the SMS' run, and while I didn't have a camera at each of our earliest shows (November 2008's Wolven Ancestry/Woods of Ypres show is a notable absence), a good number are now on our current Facebook page to check out! One album contains a Bellevue Park Bandshell concert from August 2007 featuring Sindicate, Atrophia, and two other bands, as well as select photos from April 2008's Skid Row Battle of the Bands at The Speak Easy.

Other albums are dedicated to individual shows, and they include the Sandman/As It Stands show at The Canadian Nightclub in June 2008 (my first 19+ concert), the Helix/Stillbroke show there the following month, most bands from July 2008's Rock 2 Roll skatepark fundraiser at The Canadian (headlined by Ministry of Zen), and Gates of Winter's trilogy of Grand Theater shows in late 2008 prior to their ongoing stage hiatus (opening for The Womb in August, Inflict in September, and Fuck the Facts in November.) Those are all from our old Facebook group, while moved over from our Photobucket page, we now have January 2009's Ministry of Zen/Fingerbone concert at the old Coch's Corner, the Stillbroke show at The Verdi Hall that April, most bands from The YMCA Battle of the Bands at The Grand that April, the Cattle Decapitation show at The Oddfellows Hall that same month, May 2009's Who Made Who show at The Canadian, and Fitswitch's month-ending reunion show at Coch's Corner.

The quality of these photos ranges from OK to mediocre, but using a succession of cameras and not being as experienced with photography as I am now, I'm just glad I did get photos at some of them, and it was fun to reflect back on the SMS' early days while cleaning them all up! Check out all of our "new" Facebook concert photos as the above links, and if you can help ID any of the bands or details on the Bellevue Park show from 2007, let us know! That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes in the coming week! Thanks everyone!

Where Are The New Albums? (June 2016 Update)

Better late than never for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post, as we're taking a look at upcoming and (at least partially) recorded albums from local metal, hard rock, and/or punk bands, in order to update readers on their current release statuses and whereabouts! We don't have any new albums to add this month, but three of this month's entries have updated info, and as usual, you can find them by looking for the album's title in italics. So, where are the new albums? Read on below to hopefully find out!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AlgomA's untitled split CD with Hooded Menace

Rumoured Songs (A): "Failed Stunt Fatality", "Canis Rabidus"

Rumoured Songs (H): Unknown

Background: In recent months, local doom metal trio AlgomA have announced on their Facebook page that they are planning to release a split EP with Finnish death/doom metal quartet Hooded Menace later this year, to be released by Doomentia Records with art by Paolo Girardi, though updates haven't followed on it. For reference, these plans followed the announcement and release of their split vinyl EP with Saskatchewan doom metallers Chronobot, which successfully came out last month, but it remains to be seen if this will be formatted similarly. In any event, AlgomA's tracks were/are being recorded locally at Six, Two, Oh.

Current Release Status: No idea, but seeing as the Chronobot split was successfully released, the Hooded Menace one has precedent to come out without fail also! That said, the Hooded Menace split has taken a back seat publically while the Chronobot split saw it's release, so things may be a ways off yet, but stay tuned as more comes in from either side!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Apocalypse Afterparty - Bufflesnort

Rumoured Songs: "The Crowd" (The Fury cover), "Rebel Scum" (The Fury cover), "Sweet F*ck"

Background: Before ever playing a public concert, new local rap/metal band The Apocalypse Afterparty announced on their Facebook page in August 2014 that they had begun working on their 3 song debut EP with producer Jamie Vincent (AlgomA), though they also alluded to recording the remaining songs with different producers. The song that they recorded with Jamie is "The Crowd", which you can hear in full at this link, though recent postings have hinted at recording said EP this year for a release and recording sessions at Tidal Records' own Mission Control Studios, albeit with a new lineup in tow. Though pubic updates have been sporadic as of late, the band announced in December that the title would be "Bufflesnort", and it'd be a 3 song release.

Current Release Status: As per the band's Facebook page in December, "Bufflesnort" is "nearing end-of-production", and they expect to be back on stage in the spring, with planned releases on mp3, USB sticks, and vinyl (no CDs?) This was all preceded by "songwriter" Steve Mozarowski's departure from the band and related lineup changes, but how that will impact things is unclear. It should be noted that The Apocalypse Afterparty's version of "The Crowd" is featured on last year's Blood Shed Productions 11-way split album, but at last word, the EP itself is still in the works. Hopefully more comes out soon on it!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bear Hunters - The Dead Testament

Rumoured Songs: "The Void", "The Omen", "Neckbreaker", "I Fear No God", "Servitude", "Transcend Judgement", "For Glory", "The Wrath Of Angmar", "The Dying Den", "The Dead Testament", "Deception" (bonus rerecording), "The Forest of Forests" (bonus track)

Background: In tentative planning since 2014 under this title, local death metal quintet The Bear Hunters have been playing songs intended for their second full length CD for a few years now, but only fully began recording sessions for "The Dead Testament" on October 2nd. Following a brief fundraising campaign and the gradual unveiling of song titles, the band have been working with producer Dustin Jones at Mission Control Studios, and have shared sporadic updates on their Instagram page. Like on 2014's "Eternal Hibernation", rhythm guitarist Josh Stephney is recording parts for the album despite living in Southern Ontario, but it's not yet clear on how bonus tracks will be handled.

Current Release Status: The band hasn't given any firm timetables for when to expect "The Dead Testament" in stores, but as of this writing, the band has finished most tracking sessions, with rhythm guitar work ongoing late last month while Josh was home. The band is aiming for a more professional sound and release for their sophomore effort, but the band noted on their Facebook page that if things stay this productive, a release in the late summer may be possible. Keep an eye out for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caroline Divine's debut album

Rumoured Songs: "Caroline Divine", "Looking For A Fight"

Background: After prior teases of recording sessions and the search for a spot to record, personal Facebook pages from members of newer local glam/power pop trio Caroline Divine have confirmed that they are indeed working on their debut album. The guys have largely been away from concerts presumably due to studio work, but greater details on the track listing, release formats, and so forth have yet to be made. Visit their Facebook page for more!

Current Release Status: No idea yet, especially as the band hasn't shown their cards yet concerning album progress, but follow the band to see when/if they announce anything!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Din - Give In To The Din

Rumoured Songs: "In Search Of The Perfect Moment", "Out Of My League", "This Potato May Be Used As A Flotation Device", "Analog Palace", "Of Cars & Criminals", "Hex", "Spin Cycle", "A Drive Through The Peninsula", "Cowardly Hearts Beneath The Stars", "Leamington, Ontario", "75", "Differences", "Alleyways & Apartments"

Background: The former Mike Haggith & The Din are no strangers to recording studio material, with earlier acid/jam era lineups recording a few free "albums" for digital distribution circa 2014, but the band only began working on a formal paid & pressed studio CD in 2016, after transitioning to a more structured alternative/hard rock sound last year. Following the surprise paid release of their live CD "The Din Does Laundry" last month, The Din have commenced work on their debut studio album "Give In To The Din", with cover artwork, the first song ("In Search of the Perfect Moment"), and teaser videos available to check out online, though further information is sure to follow. Despite frontman Mike Haggith's extensive past with PaperClip Productions, "Give In To The Din" is being recorded at the upstart Pretoria Hill Productions with producer Daniel Schmidt.

Current Release Status: It's too early to guess, but Mike's band work (solo, Haggith, or otherwise) has reliably produced albums with clear schedules & release dates, so hopefully this album is no different! Stay tuned for updates!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Elements' debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Liar"

Background: Arguably better known for their funk, ska, and hard rock covers, local quartet The Elements have been adding original material to their sets since last year, and have since publically confirmed earlier teases that they are working on a debut EP. Frontman Rob Speers has confirmed in personal conversations that they have been working in studio on the release, which will have at least 5 tracks, and I believe it's being self-recorded, but further public updates are minimal at best. It's also not known if they'll employ any guest performers, such as Josh Norling or DJ Seith, who added well-received saxophone and turntable elements to some recent concerts.

Current Release Status: At this stage, I have no idea, but Rob sounded like things were going well in studio, so we'll have to see what comes out next on The Elements' first EP!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gates of Winter - Perihelion

Rumoured Songs: "The Stars Call My True Name", "Edin Na Zu", "Dimensions", "Time Warp", "Wormhole Mechanics", "Prometheus"

Background: Despite a hiatus from live concerts lasting over 7 years, Gates of Winter never broke up, and are slowly working on their follow-up to 2008's "Lux Aeterna". The first glimpse of the new album was unveiled in February 2010, when frontman/producer Lee Maines uploaded a snippet of their new song "The Stars Call My True Name" onto his YouTube channel, and he followed that up with more demo & rehearsal clips sporadically over the last couple of years, though all were later taken down. The band launched a new Facebook page in August 2010 to keep fans updated on the sessions, including the unveiling of a new song title, "Time Warp", and while Sault native Jon Morrison was announced as the album's drummer that fall, the album will feature programmed drums. In November 2011, bassist Steve Furgiuele confirmed in a YouTube video that the album, now titled "Perihelion", was planned for release in December 2012, with some older re-recordings likely for the summer, but Lee has since confirmed that the album would be delayed further, be retracted to EP length, and possibly be renamed. Other new songs, tentatively called "Wormhole Mechanics" & "Prometheus", was previewed in this video & this video that were uploaded in 2013 & last April respectively. Whether ex-keyboardist Brian Holmes will be included on the EP is currently unknown.

Current Release Status: Personal commitments and the like have slowed things down incredibly, but in the band's most recent preview video (featuring audio samples), Gates of Winter hinted that work was winding down on "Perihelion", including noting that "the silence ends soon". Good art takes time, and knowing Gates of Winter's talent and attention to detail, they won't want to release this until everything's perfect. I'll admit that I know a bit more on "Perihelion" than what I've posted here, but I'll wait until more public word comes out. Keep an eye out for updates!

Gnaeus - Meditations

Rumoured Songs: "An Exercise In Self-Awareness", "Lovers", "Fire", "When You're Gone", "Circles", "The Edge", "The Sound", "Mountains", "Crave", "Calling Out", "Hail Mary"

Background: Amidst various teases of recording sessions, local post-punk/garage rock quartet Gnaeus have confirmed in recent concerts that they are in fact recording their debut CD "Meditations" (renamed from "Loomings" in early 2016) at Tidal Records' own Mission Control Studios, possibly stemming from their "Best Song" win at March 2015's VM Radio Battle of the Bands. Though online materials remain quiet otherwise for progress on the album, the planned album cover and online sales location of the EP under it's original name can be found at this link, though it's unclear if the cover will change along with the name. Though drummer Brendan Garlick moved out of town earlier this year and was replaced by Alex Proulx, bassist Matt Fronzi confirmed with me in a personal conversation that Brendan did record drum tracks for the release beforehand.

Current Release Status: The most recent indication on Gnaeus' Facebook page mention that they hoped the EP would be out for Christmas, which has obviously came and went, but the band did note that and tracking was winding down as of October 20th. Gnaeus have been reasonably quiet online regarding album progress, with the band even taking a hiatus earlier this year to prep for the release, but postings sound positive otherwise, so hopefully things stay on track!

Long Shot's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Long Goodbye", "El Camino", "Double Take"

Background: After prior teases of writing original material, local hard rock quartet Long Shot revealed on their Facebook page on January 11th that they were almost done mastering their debut EP. Public updates hadn't preceded the announcement, but Long Shot had posted live demos of three original songs onto their Reverbnation page last fall, and have played these originals and more live since.

Current Release Status: Other than the reveal of EP sessions almost being finished, I have no idea when this might come out, and with the band's members not being familiar sights from prior bands, we have nothing to compare it to. We also haven't seen Long Shot on stage yet this year, but the guys have shown skill and maturity since their debut, and fingers crossed things come along so we can see a release!

Mike Haggith - Neighbourhood Watch Revisited

Rumoured Songs: "To Whom This May Concern", "Room 822", "The Ballad of K2/K3", "The Day The Lights Went Out", "Limb Coast", "Leon the Janitor", "Far Too Long"

Background: After previously hinting at a re-recorded version of his 45th solo album "Neighbourhood Watch" in late 2015, local solo musician Mike Haggith officially began releasing new versions of songs from the original 2012 CD onto his YouTube channel last month, those being of "Limb Coast" & "Room 822". His first full release of new recordings since last summer's "The Warinside", "Neighbourhood Watch Revisited" is being recorded at PaperClip Productions, with Mike being joined on at least some songs by Din bandmate Brandan Glew on drums and ex-Din/Haggith bandmate Curtis McKenzie on guitar.

Current Release Status: I have no idea, but Mike is usually an efficient artist when it comes to recording and releasing solo material, and if there's a delay, he'll be honest about it, so it could be soon! However, if there are any plans for it to come out on the 4th anniversary of the original's release, "Neighbourhood Watch", keep watch for it in October. Curtis has revealed in this video that it's "steadily nearing the completion stage", so stay tuned for updates as they come in!

Redundant's debut CD

Rumoured Songs: "Miles Apart", "That December", "What You'll Do"

Background: Over two and a half years after their last documented studio sessions in the spring of 2012, local punk trio Redundant revealed on their Facebook page in November 2014 that they were finally working on finishing their debut CD, and will look to hold a CD release party for it upon it's completion. Details are otherwise minimal, including on if the guys will just package their older studio work for the release, or include new recordings, perhaps at bassist James White's studio White Wreckords. We'll keep you posted if we hear more!

Current Release Status: Though we don't know much on the new/revived album plans, Redundant did sound serious about completing their CD. That said, Redundant have only played once or twice in 2015 and haven't made any public statements regarding the album since 2014. The band did resume public activity in March 2016, announcing that they were writing new songs and working on "new studio shit", but it's not clear how earlier album sessions would play in. If we hear any updates, we'll be sure to let you know!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Skeyes of Seven's debut EP

Rumoured Songs: "Enough", "See The Truth", "Fallen Faith", "Destination Unknown", "No One Cares", "Pretend", "Cognitive Dissonance"

Background: Already no strangers to the studio after recording their songs "Fallen Faith" and "Enough" as single in each of the last two years, local modern hard rock quartet Skeyes of Seven hit the studio to record their debut EP last year, though only publically confirmed that an EP was in the works in January on their Facebook page. Sessions are ongoing locally at Deluca Sound Productions, who have shared videos of band members tracking material for the EP, but four confirmed songs were strongly teased in April via some cryptic Facebook photo postings. At this stage, it's not entirely clear on whether the band will include any other singles, but ex-drummer John Mignacca did record tracks for the release before moving to Sudbury last year.

Current Release Status: No idea yet, but as of January 17th, Skeyes of Seven had only one more song to record before sending the tracks to be mixed & mastered. Hopefully this can see a release at some point, as Skeyes of Seven have arguably been more active in studio than in concert since their 2012 formation, so follow along to see where things go for their debut EP!

Telephone & Address - "Monster" and "The Early Tapes"

Rumoured Songs (M): "Unknown"

Rumoured Songs (E): "The Plumbers"

Background: Telephone & Address mainman Chris Shoust announced on their Facebook page last January that he's working on releasing "The Early Tapes", a compilation of songs from the first 4 Telephone & Address albums (2011's self titled album, and 2012's "Live", "No. 3", and "Broken Head"), all of which being released before their recent full integration into the local scene. Since then however, he quietly revealed on Facebook that a separate new album named "Monster" is done, with an advanced copy leaked to him by AlgomA drummer Jamie Vincent, which likely hints that Jamie helped produce it. No other details have been revealed yet, but some songs may be on their Soundcloud page, and when both are released, they're likely to turn up on Telephone & Address' Bandcamp page and on Interpunk, which Chris has also used to distribute physical copies.

Current Release Status: Chris indicated on the project's Facebook page that "Monster" would be pressed last fall, which has came & went, and it's not clear if a release is coming soon or not. As for "The Early Tapes", Chris revealed in March 2015 that it "will be delayed for some time", though he didn't elaborate on why specifically. It's also worth noting that Chris briefly announced collaborating with Boxes of Boom's Sam Decter as a drummer with Telephone & Address and under a new project name (Are You Now? or Have You Ever?), but references to Chris & Sam's work have quietly been removed from Facebook, and it's not known if this means anything for the "Monster" release. We'll keep you posted!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Redneck Rock Bash 2, Havadder, And Tym Morrison) & Weekend Concert Previews!!

After having just one post in the past 4 days, let's get back into the groove with this weekend's concert previews! It's a relatively light weekend to start the month of June, barring any more late notice announcements, but we have lots of SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS to kick off our hard rock concert previews, so here's what you should know!

Local hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison has announced his next solo dates at Gliss Steak & Seafood for TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so we'll add his slate of June 2016 dates to our concert listings now! Apologies for the short notice on this weekend's dates, we were waiting for the Facebook event page to confirm them before announcing them here. Along with TOMORROW & SATURDAY'S Gliss shows, Tym will also bring his acoustic solo show to The Quality Inn's house restaurant for shows on June 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th, and 24th & 25th, with his previously teased return to Thursday nights at this venue still awaiting a firm return date. Tym's long-term arrangement at Gliss continues to successfully march into the summer, so keep his June dates in mind, as well as his previously announced Algoma Ride for Autism set in Runway Park on June 11th too! All of his Gliss shows this month have 6:00 PM start times and no announced cover charges or age limits, but remember that this is a sit-down restaurant.

Tym's acoustic matinees should deliver some solid hard rock hits this month, including TOMORROW & SATURDAY, so check the above links for more details on the next month of his Gliss run, and here he is live!

Next up, the long teased second Redneck Rock Bash goes down THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at The Rednecks Saloon! Apologies again for the short notice, we had heard about the show via a Musicians Wanted Facebook group discussion searching for performers since April 10th, but we waited for an official public confirmation before calling it here, which only came on Tuesday. A sequel to April 23rd's initial Redneck Rock Bash from promoters Twin City Sound & Entertainment, this will again unite five local acts for a night of varied local music, so who all is performing? Listed acts include classic metal quintet Project 421 (replacing The Din, who are focusing on their album release right now), punk trio Redundant (the only returning band from April's Rock Bash), indie rock solo artist Jacob "Shit Creek Survivor" Quarrell, The Leash Kids (an experimental/rap duo from The Gore Street Cafe's Sam Decter & rapper Mikey Thomas), and classic/hard rock trio Mourning Wood (whose members run Twin City Sound.)

Solid, diverse lineup to be sure, so keep it in mind despite the short notice on SATURDAY NIGHT! There's no announced cover charge for Redneck Rock Bash 2, which has a 19+ age limit and 10:00 PM start time (and for the record, I can't confirm if any of these bands are playing tomorrow night at Rednecks or not, Mourning Wood in particular, but we'll let you know if something is announced!) Check the official Facebook event page for more details, and here's Project 421 live!

In one more late notice concert announcement, local classic/hard rock cover trio Havadder will return to the stage THIS SATURDAY NIGHT themselves at The Rockstar Bar! Again, apologies for the short notice, we only heard about this show via the official Facebook event page yesterday. Playing just their third show of the year and first show in two months, this will be Havadder's second live appearance since contracting to a trio lineup full time, and while we haven't seen Jason, Travis, and Scott much this year, their well tested and hard hitting covers should find another solid audience on SATURDAY NIGHT! There's no cover charge for SATURDAY'S 19+ concert, which has a 10:30 PM start time. For more details, visit the above links, and here's Havadder live last year!

Finally for this weekend's previews, we'll head across to The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT, where local classic/hard rock cover quartet Highway 63 will hit the stage for two previously announced shows! Though still not plugging new dates on Facebook, Kewadin Casino's entertainment page confirms that the Monkey's Uncle successors will continue their one-weekend-a-month run of shows at The Rapids Lounge this weekend, so keep their often heavy and classics-filled sets in mind for this weekend if you want some live music action in the E.U.P.! There's no announced cover charges for these 21+ concerts, which will start at 9:00 PM each night. For more details, visit the above links, and here's Highway 63 live earlier this year!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for this month's "Where Are The New Albums?" post next, plus more news to come! Thanks everyone!
