YouTube Channel Profile Series - SYKOTYK RAMPAGE - Topic

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profile, as we again look at a YouTube channel whose uploaded content is at least half devoted to local metal, hard rock, and/or punk artists and/or concerts, in order to spotlight their uploaded videos for modern readers! For a second time in three months, our random selection gives us the same local band's YouTube Music uploads, but via two different albums of theirs, so here's what you should know!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYKOTYK RAMPAGE - Topic (http://youtube.com/channel/UCkfrXp-Rf8KSTEjTarxxiOQ)

Owner: If anyone, Sykotyk Rampage guitarist/singer Dirk Becker, though the channel is auto-generated to facilitate the band's catalogue being available on YouTube Music

Channel Timeline: Launched on August 17th, 2022; Videos uploaded that day and on July 16th, 2024

Channel Summary: Four different YouTube channels exist to host parts of the back catalogue of local "blue Chinese metal crash punk" quartet Sykotyk Rampage on YouTube Music, with this particular channel hosting two albums of theirs, albeit this time from two different time periods of the band featuring different bassists.

Why You Should Watch: Given how fragmented (and incomplete) Sykotyk Rampage's discography is represented on YouTube Music, this channel is really only for band completionists who regularly consume streaming music via YouTube. Their complete 70+ album discography is available on their Bandcamp page, which should be stop #1 for fans of the masters of the crash, but if you had a particular affinity for these two albums, like the ones we looked at in September, note their YouTube presence!

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

DIRTY WOMEN: The older of the two albums here is 2008's "Blue Chinese Metal Crash Punk", one of three albums that singer/drummer Paul Becker, guitarist/his brother Dirk Becker, guitarist Shane Kokis, and then-bassist Brian Cattapan (Paul's son-in-law) put out that year. Named for the band's own description of their genre, none of these songs have visibly became setlist staples from their 2009-2017 run as a live band, and I haven't reviewed the album yet either, but it doesn't reinvent the wheel from their tried-and-true brand of improvised crash rock. The 8+ minute blues rock jam "Dirty Women" will be right up established fans' alley with a fun and carefree nature, and it lets the guys show their skills well throughout!

Almost Ready to Go: The longer and newer of the two albums on this particular channel is August 2014's "Kitty Farts And Other Play-Full Noises", which was among their early studio releases featuring ex-The Fury bassist Tony Briglio in place of Brian. Again, not an album that I have reviewed for the SMS yet, nor one that sourced regular songs from their late-period concerts, but it will be an accessible listen for new fans given the songs' relatively shorter length and that it's not a concept album like many of their other albums of this era. The opening song "Almost Ready To Go" is a tighter and more driving rocker with some trippier guitar flourish that would have been a live favourite if re-learned thusly!

Got You by The Balls: By far the most heard song on this particular YouTube Music channel, song #3 from "Kitty Farts..." must have gotten attention from its title more than anything, as it doesn't do anything drastically differently from their usual sykotyk formula, and Paul's singing is really buried in the mix here. Fans with their environ-mental suits at the ready will definitely be into this crash rocker, which has solid guitar riffs, but it's nothing established fans haven't heard elsewhere.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profile! Next month in this series, our next randomly selected channel to profile will be that of YouTube user videosofbedlam, featuring four videos of the late lamented local hard rock quartet Garden of Bedlam, so look for that on or around November 26th, and for a new news post next! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tarnished), More Weekend Concert Previews, And New Videos!!

Before we get into this post, we have the public go ahead to say that Soundcheck will be featuring guest singers Elly McWatters (ex-Re:Born) and Valerie Powley (Generations) for their short notice show at The Esquire Club TOMORROW NIGHT! Regular singer/guitarist Cameron Oliver will be on vacation out of town, and thanks to him for posting this in comment replies on our Facebook page this morning, as the band/venue hadn't publically confirmed anything prior! Both Elly and Valerie have great voices, and with Valerie helping out TOMORROW, could fans get a mini-encore of their show last year featuring most of Obsession's lead singers? Cameron will be present for tonight's Soundcheck show before he hits the road.

Now, today's post otherwise looks at this weekend's remaining weekend concert previews, a couple of new videos, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT, as Sault Michigan hard rock trio Tarnished will play their first show of the year on Saturday, February 24th when they return to The Fraternal Order Of Orioles Nest in Kincheloe! This will be Tarnished's second appearance at Nest 311, having headlined the Orioles' New Year's Eve party this past December, and clearly that went well for them to get re-booked already, let alone without any apparent ties to club events! For the record, the order's Facebook page hinted that Tarnished would be back in February, but we didn't hear a date until Tarnished gave it themselves on their Facebook page yesterday. Expect this to be an 8:00 PM event next Saturday with no announced cover charge and a 21+ age limit.

As for the Orioles Nest, it is located at 4916 West Curtis Street in Kincheloe, which is only a 20 minute drive south from Sault Ste. Marie. Fingers crossed that Alex, Parker, and Josh have a solid encore for fans at this somewhat atypical locale next week, and visit the above links for more details!

Now let's dive into the remainder of this weekend's hard rock concert previews, specifically via two Saturday nighters that had advance notice, starting with veteran Sault Michigan blues/hard rock quartet Project 906's return to The Strongs Tavern in nearby Eckerman TOMORROW NIGHT! After a three month winter break, this will be Project 906's first show of 2024 and their first at The Strongs Tavern in over seven months, which is a very unusual gap for them given how often they've played there over the years. Hopefully their hard rocking array of covers find another solid audience out in Eckerman tomorrow night! Expect an 8:00 PM start time, 21+ age limit, and no cover charge. Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's a brand new video of Project 906 live! This is from an undated Strongs Tavern show from no later than July 2023, unless there was a private gig since that I was unaware of.

The 31 second clip (as uploaded to their Facebook page two weeks ago) sees Project 906 and an uncredited guest singer covering Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name". A good (if very overplayed) song gets a strong rendition from what we see here, so check it out below, and don't miss Project 906's first show of the year tomorrow!

Lastly for known hard rock concerts this weekend, we'll head north to Sault Ontario, where newer local hard rock quintet HeadFirst will rock Shooters Downstairs Lounge for the first time TOMORROW NIGHT! After exclusively playing at Reggie's in recent months (aside from Toystock), this newer quintet will finally spread their wings to some other nightclubs this month, with Shooters first up tomorrow for new and existing fans alike. Hopefully Red, Raine, Liam, Claire, and Anthony leave a strong first impression on a new (to them) venue tomorrow with their hard rocking and classic covers, along with their current original material! A one nighter due to Shooters' DJ nights on Fridays, tomorrow's concert has a 9:30 PM start time, no cover charge, and a 19+ age limit. Visit the above links for more details, and for a preview, here's HeadFirst playing "The Walk"!

We'll close today with new videos from newer local pop rock cover quintet Bourbon Blue, whose general setlist isn't heavy enough to make our full coverage, but they'll be no strangers to many readers. Bourbon Blue are basically the successors to the short-lived 2021 cover band Lockdown, with singer/guitarist Jules Cote, vocalist Nicole Ambeault, and guitarist Randy Russell now joined by ex-Band Camp Rejects bassist Ryan Bell and new drummer Alvaro Scheid (replacing Turner Up/Settle For Silver alum Brent Royer). Yes, you'll also know Jules and Nicole from The Soo Fighters and Nicky & The Southpaws. In between their recent drummer switch, Bourbon Blue kept gigging with guest drummers, one being Soundcheck's Glen Thomas during their shows at Jay's Piston Broke Pub over the Christmas weekend (this was the same weekend where Double Down's Ric Datson drummed with Soundcheck in lieu of Glen).

Glen had fourteen videos shot and uploaded to his YouTube channel from one of his two gigs with Bourbon Blue, and while most don't cross our genre radar (hewing closer to Jules' old band Cherry Crush), the two newest videos are SMS amenable, including covers of The Interrupters' "She's Kerosene" and (as embedded below) Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me". Strong renditions that clearly attracted a good crowd to the floor, and while they don't lean heavier in setlist contents, Bourbon Blue can effectively add some rock to the likes of Miley Cyrus and Bruno Mars where need be, so don't bypass Glen's other dozen videos! Check out Bourbon Blue above & below, and they'll be at Reggie's tonight & tomorrow!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news and notes over the Family Day long weekend! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (The Nostalgic Band), The Sparrow Blue Concert Preview, And Inactive Band Notes!!

Here's a new news post to check out on this rainy Monday evening, and it includes notes on two bands moved out of our active links, a mid-week concert preview, and leading off, a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for next week, so let's get things rolling!

Local classic metal trio The Nostalgic Band will return to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for one night only on Friday, September 22nd! Announced a few days after their recent array of fall-winter gigs that we covered on the SMS this past Friday, this will be Tym, Dutch, and Chet's first show at the former Reggie's West in almost a month, and it should prove to be another quality opportunity to take in their old school metal and hard rock covers, so don't miss out! No word on why they're not playing on Saturday the 23rd. It is also worth noting that The Nostalgic Band will give a kick at the can at being jam night hosts at Reggie's Place this Thursday, as per this Facebook event page, with a presumably similar format as the Soundcheck-hosted jam nights at Jay's where audience members are encouraged to perform on stage, with or without the house band. The guys certainly have the chops & setlist ready!

Remember that we don't treat jam nights as "concerts" due to their unpredictability by design, but if you like such events as a spectator or possible participant, keep this Thursday's festivities in mind! As for next Friday's show at Jay's, expect a 9:30 PM start time, 19+ age limit, and no cover charge. Visit the official Facebook event page for more details!

Next up, here's our preview of a special Tuesday night concert TOMORROW NIGHT, as St. Albert, Alberta hard rock band Sparrow Blue will make their local debut at Soo Blaster! This fast rising sextet have been turning heads with their classic rock-inspired yet hard edged original sound that they dub "real thick rock n' roll", and they should leave a strong first impression among local fans tomorrow, so don't bypass Sparrow Blue whatsoever! Local support will come by way of hard/alternative rock quintet Handsome Sandwich and their good friends in indie/alternative quartet Man Feelings (they opened for each other's album release concerts, after all), and it will be good to see them share the stage again! Sponsored by Session Cannabis,  this 19+ show has an advertised 7:00 PM start time running until 11:30 PM, which will hopefully be amenable to those of you with work or school on Wednesday!

Tickets are $10 in advance (plus tax/processing fees) at this link, with the door price jumping to $15. This should be a fun concert for hard and alternative rock fans, with the three bands on offer delivering a little something for most tastes, so definitely visit the official Facebook event page and the above links for more details, and here's Sparrow Blue live!

Also today, we have two local hard rock bands to move to our inactive band links, the first being veteran local hard rock/ska punk band Tripod The Dog. While their public silence online since reuniting may be explained by their lack of an updated online page (their Facebook group was ran by ex-guitarist Greg Beharriel), the band has not publically surfaced in any form since playing in The Esquire Club's Buckets, Bands, and Birds matinee concert series in May 2022. They were scheduled to return to that venue for two weekends last fall (note the G poking out of the tape on this schedule), but they quietly dropped out of those bookings. After a successful local run from the 1990s-2008 and a well received reunion set at Rotaryfest Stage 1 in 2018, frontman Mark Oliverio fully brought back Tripod The Dog on the weekend cover band circuit with a Rockstar Bar gig in April 2019, primarily playing there & at The Esquire Club.

The pandemic ate up a good chunk of their three years back, and Tripod weren't seen most weeks anyway, but it was nice to have them back on weekends when they had gigs, and hopefully we haven't heard the outright last from Mark and the Amendolas, let alone their many prior members!

Finally, the other band moved to our inactive links is young local hard rock band Sylo, better previously known as Raincourt. We have not heard any public updates from Sylo since they opened for Vanity First at a gig in Harmony Beach last July, with Sylo proper never having their own dedicated online presence beyond renaming their YouTube channel. In their original run as Raincourt since the fall of 2021, they were well publicized with two studio original songs, gigs at White Pines Collegiate and last year's Go Skateboarding Day, and this lengthy interview with original guitarist/namesake Raine Rancourt on The Boar's Nest with Don Lewis, but once Raine left the band at some point in June or July 2022, their social media presence dried up. Note that frontman Elijah Russell released a solo acoustic album named "The Late Great Eli Russell" on major streaming services last month, which turned out well for its genre!

I don't know what happened to Raincourt/Sylo after such a promising few months, possibly accentuated if you went to White Pines and saw them in both this band & The Pine Tones, and while losing Raine was a blow for fans, I was curious to see how Sylo would progress as a group. Raincourt's two original songs were promisingly heavy and didn't indicate that teenagers wrote them, so give them and their live videos a watch/listen above, and hopefully we hear more from Elijah, Raine, Owen, and Jakob soon! That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news on the site soon! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Sparrow Blue & Tym Morrison), New Videos, And More!!

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to apologize for missing Sault Michigan hard rock cover quartet Rhythm & Brews' return to The Rapids Lounge at the Soo's Kewadin Casino branch this past Friday & Saturday in our weekend concert previews. Three weeks removed from their last shows at The Rapids Lounge, these were not announced on the band's Facebook page, and I only heard about them via members' personal Facebook pages after the fact. I am 100% positive that they were not advertised for this past weekend on Kewadin's entertainment page, so they may truly have been short notice, but apologies regardless! I'd have covered them had they gotten any public advance notice, but hopefully they were hits!

Now, let's pause our Rotaryfest fallout briefly to look at some other recent news updates, starting with LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS, one on SHORT NOTICE, as Sault Ontario hard rock singer/guitarist Tym Morrison will bring his acoustic solo act to Jay's Piston Broke Pub for the first time THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT! Apologies for the short notice, the venue only announced that Tym was playing on WEDNESDAY via their Facebook page earlier today. Starting on July 5th, the former Reggie's West began hosting "matinee" concerts at 6:00 PM on both Mondays & Wednesdays to coincide with chicken wing nights, with a different acoustic-leaning performer playing on these evenings to coincide with the promotion (if you are so inclined, wings at Jay's are 85¢ each). In fact, this series started on Wednesday the 5th with Bone Yard frontman Greg Simpson in his first unplugged solo gig since the pandemic began!

I do apologize for missing that on here too, which would have been fun for Bone Yard fans, but this conceit of mid-week evening concerts during Jay's wing nights is very new to me. Country veteran Leslie Cook has owned Mondays so far, while last Wednesday had Soundcheck's Cameron Oliver in a joint country set with Matt Tarantini. THIS WEDNESDAY will see Tym rock out on a familiar night if you recall his Mike Case Stage shows last summer. Hopefully this is a good, if late notice, primer for The Nostalgic Band's debut there next weekend! Expect a 19+ age limit and no cover charge for this 6:00 PM affair. See above for more details, and here's Tym live!

Next up, here's a new show with plenty of advance notice, as St. Albert, Alberta hard rock sextet Sparrow Blue will make their local concert debut on Tuesday, September 12th when they rock Soo Blaster! Sparrow Blue's classic rock-inspired brand of "real thick rock 'n roll" has helped them cross genre lines and attract some strong notices to date, and with their obvious talents, they should turn heads in a couple of months! Local support will come by way of two bands who are certainly no strangers to each other in 2023, namely indie rock quartet Man Feelings and hard/alternative rock quintet Handsome Sandwich, and their devoted fanbases should hopefully come out for this one despite the somewhat unfortunate Tuesday night scheduling! This stop on Sparrow Blue's Outta The Nest Tour has $10 advance tickets at this link and a $15 door charge, while a 7:00 PM start time is advertised, and expect a 19+ age limit. See above for more details!

Let's leap back to Sault Michigan now for some new videos from local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906's show at Snow's Bar & Grill in nearby Cedarville from this past Saturday! These were filmed by a venue staffer and live-streamed to the bar's Facebook page, and while they did the same for Tarnished on Friday night, we're saving those for this weekend's concert previews. The videos confirm that Brian Duford (who guested with 906 when they last played in Cedarville) was back behind the drumkit on Saturday, though if it was due to another conflicting Fake Chow gig for Jason VanLuven, then that band did not publically plug it on their Facebook page. The videos feature Project 906 & Brian covering Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble's "Pride & Joy" and, as embedded below, The Allman Brothers Band's "Soulshine". Sadly, these are both vertically shot, but at least everyone is in frame for the duration!

Everyone sounds good on these covers that do more justice to the blues rock side of Project 906's cover range (at least neither of these is "What If" again!), and vertical aspect ratio aside, the quality is really strong for the video proper. Check these out above & below, and stay tuned for more concert videos from Snow's later this week!

We'll close today with a Sault Ontario video that has slipped us by in our recent coverage of local concert videos shot for Christopher Paci's YouTube channel, mainly because it was uploaded as a "Shorts" video and therefore wasn't lumped with the rest. This comes from the Dayglo Abortions/Random Killing concert at Soo Blaster in May, with Chris posting this brief vertical clip of attendees moshing during Random Killing's co-headlining set. Mosh pits are best experienced in widescreen, but it is fun seeing so many punk fans making noise in the pit for such a big show, and hopefully everyone survived intact! Check it out for yourselves below!

That's all for now, but we'll resume our fallout from Rotaryfest on the site next! Thanks everyone!

The Inner City Surfers' Debut CD Review!!

It's now time for our 119th monthly CD review at The Sault Metal Scene, and this month, we're taking a long overdue look at a CD by inactive local punk quartet The Inner City Surfers for the first time, namely their self-titled debut album! This is an archive review due to no new local heavier/punk album releases in May 2019, and I went with a Surfers album to tie in with frontman Dustin Jones' Music 4 Kayge set with The Rising Tide last week. I opted not to review a Rising Tide CD out of deference to their forthcoming album, so as to not delay it's review on the site. Independently released in 2000, "Inner City Surfers" (retroactively nicknamed "The Blue Album") was largely recorded in drummer Mikey Hawdon's basement with producer and Fistmagnet alum Garry Ingram aside from tracks #4 & #11, which were recorded with Wayne Lorenz, who mastered the album with Jeff Elliot at Reaction Studios in Toronto, while Wayne mixed 8 songs and Kite Eating Maples drummer Ryan Gassi mixed the other four.

The Inner City Surfers are represented here by their classic lineup, including the aforementioned Dustin Jones on vocals & guitar, Dave Bahun on guitar, Brad Lacell (not yet called "Brad Example") on bass, and Mike (not yet Mikey) Hawdon on drums. This CD is long since out of print, but you can buy (for $7.99) and stream digital copies of it on services like Apple Music, Amazon, YouTube, and Spotify, and physical copies might surface at The Rad Zone, where I bought mine. Featuring 12 songs running for over 33 minutes in length, let's begin this review with it's opening track! "The Blue Album" begins with "Ford Upton", which opens with a solitary bass intro by Brad before Dustin's vocals kick in, and they are much rawer and plain than fans may expect compared to the last 20 years of his career. Once the song kicks in fully, it has a nice melodic bent while maintaining it's relatable punk attitude that served them well throughout their mid-2000s heyday, complete with an aggressive late stretch to add to it's variety.

What strikes me about this song is it's piecemeal, nontraditional structure with no true chorus, and which feels like a few songs chopped together, almost like The Surfers foreshadowed "Jesus of Suburbia". I don't love "Ford Upton" compared to some of their later and catchier fan favourites, but it has ambition and talent, even at this very early stage of their run! Second up is "Goin' Out", which fittingly starts with a car ignition slowly getting turned on. The song proper is more of a standard pop punk original that retains some of the folksy Tide-esque rhythms, and this serves as a good showcase for Dave & Dustin's solid riffing on the choruses! The chugging bridge is effective too, but I wish that the verses flowed more naturally, as the song feels stitched together at the seams here, albeit not in a progressive nature like on "Ford Upton". However, this is a more fun track for Surfers diehards, and delivers the goods that we came to expect on later albums!

That's followed by "Venture On", a relatively long surf rock instrumental, with the title presumably a reference to legendary surf rock quartet The Ventures. Unique concept for a local band of their young age in 2000, one has to assume! Dynowaves fans may want to take extra note. I'm not a surf rock scholar, but this sounds the part and the guys deliver well, with a fun and light guitar melody and solid drums to go around! That said, I do prefer The Surfers' edgier punk material. We more or less get that on the next song, "Been Done", though the laid back nature maintains, with Dustin's singing all at a lower, more reserved register. If anything, this song serves a good "example" of Brad's then-bass skill, and there's a nice extended guitar solo from Dave to boot, so the second half of the song improves to me! I just wish that the vocals and verses were more upbeat, and with the recording quality from 19 years ago, there is some mild distortion in the lyrics.

Song #5 is "4 Months", which is the hardest-driving and most skate punk-esque song yet, and that contrasts well with Dustin's softer, band-less singing in the verses! The music is firing on all cylinders, and Mikey's drumming is at it's best on the album so far, while the dual guitar attack compliments everything as well as you'd expect! However, I have two major drawbacks from it: The very quiet, lost-in-the-mix chorus vocals, and the song's fade-out, which comes out of nowhere during what feels like a bridge, yet still runs too long. Overall, a flawed but very entertaining song as we near the midpoint of the CD! Next is "A Few Drinks", a softer acoustic number which (I think) only features Brad on vocals. This is more of a drinking song to play at the bar, so the unplugged approach works for the intended vibe, which has a country/blues essence. It's not my cup of tea, but if you like homespun drinking songs, you should get enjoyment out of it!

The second half begins with "Sunday Drive", which is a return to upbeat modern punk form for The Surfers, and this has a full-on skate punk sound with nicely driving guitar riffs and more standout drumming from Mikey along the way, not to mention another of Dave's great guitar solos! Easily my favourite song on "The Blue Album" so far, I just wish that the vocals were louder in the mix to better compliment the heavier sound, but overall, this delivers the goods for fans of late 1990s/early 2000s original punk rock! Mikey's drumming kicks off the next song "Backwards", which is another nicely paced punk song with strong instrumentation, albeit here with more of a galloping quality. Again however, Dustin's vocals are not mixed well with the music, and he really sounds muddled here, not helped by his folksier singing for much of the track. I like the drum hits in the chorus, and it's a solidly composed song!

Ninth on "Inner City Surfers" is "Whole Lot Happier",  another strong skate punk number with a nice guitar riff, and it contains some of the most aggressive vocals yet in the chorus, contrasting well with Dustin's reserved singing in the verses (which are mixed louder here.) I sort of got an Alexisonfire vibe from the chorus yelling, as it was over top of softer music than the singing would seem to call for, if that makes sense. The song ends before I expected, alas, as it had a nice sonic balance while it lasted, and everyone performed well! That's followed by "Commandments" (renamed to "10 Commandments" for it's digital release), which more modern fans may recognize from Jack Spades' 2015 cover that Dustin actually produced. A fast and heavy track with very angry (but distorted & repetitive) vocals, this is the closest that The Surfers get to hardcore punk on the CD, and it's an effective blast, ending before it gets overdone! Solidly heavy guitar work, and Brad's bass playing fits like a glove!

The penultimate song is (ironically) "Last One", which is by far the album's longest track. In spite of that, this is a very fast song with nicely sung vocals from Dustin that contrast well with the harder-hitting instrumentation, though the slow bass stretch by Brad past the halfway mark does stall the momentum somewhat. The closing instrumental break is nicely done and has a folksy essence while still retaining a fast punk sound, and you get a nice showcase of everyone's musical abilities without things dragging on too long! Another highlight on the album, for sure! The actual last one is the 81 seconds-long "Mexican Porn Shop". I'm not sure what I expected going in, but it wasn't a hardcore punk song with lyrics exclusively in Spanish! Why am I getting a Suicidal Tendencies vibe from this one? I don't speak Spanish, so I don't know what Dustin's singing, but the title implies everything is very tongue-in-cheek. It's a chaotic and fun song while it lasts, but it ends the album with a lot of questions.

So, what are my final thoughts on The Inner City Surfers' debut album? While there was room to grow, this was a solid debut album from this very talented four-some, and it showcased their punk base while also diversifying well into other sounds! To me, The Surfers were at their best with fast-paced skate punk, and we got a lot of that on album highlights like "Goin' Out", "Sunday Drive", and "Last One", but things diversified into blues, hardcore, and even surf rock on certain tracks. Dustin Jones and Dave Bahun were a great match on guitar, Brad Lacell's bass work was always solid to set the tone, and Mike Hawdon's drum abilities were never in doubt! Dustin's singing was largely solid, but the mix of his vocals was inconsistent, with some songs burying his vocals, and others distorting them too much. I won't complain about the production quality otherwise (the CD is 19 years old, after all), but the vocals could have been clearer. If that's my big issue, that's a good sign!

This isn't peak Surfers (check out their also-self titled 2007 CD for that), but "The Blue Album" laid the foundation for a lot of great music to come, and for what this was, it's a solid entry point for the guys, and any fan of theirs will find a lot to like here! Give this CD a listen or buy it at the above links! I hope you guys liked this month's CD review, but what will we be reviewing on the site next month? I don't know yet, but here's what I can say. A new album release from a local metal, hard rock, or punk act will of course take precedence, and our next "Where Are The New Albums?" post on Sunday will give some ideas as to what may be released soon! If nothing comes out, we would dip into the archives, tying in a review with an artist playing live locally if at all possible, though time will tell what is next. If nothing fits, I'd go with a prominent local album I haven't reviewed yet, and I know there's a Woods of Ypres release I haven't done yet... we'll see, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews next, and much more as we enter June! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), Evans Blue Fallout, And Much More!!

We've got more news and notes to share on this Wednesday morning, so what's on tap for this news post? Today, we have the latest news from a new local thrash band (including their new bassist), the complete lineup of a major Halloween weekend concert event, and the first videos from a recent Kewadin Casino concert, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this month!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has added another acoustic solo concert to his October schedule, and it will see him return to The Eagles Club one week from Saturday! Over a year & a half since his bi-weekly concert arrangement at the Old Trout Lake Road venue dried up, he'll head back up north for an unplugged concert of unplugged metal & hard rock hits on October 13th, so if you live up near Christie's Camper Sales (or are up for the drive), add this show to Tym's busy month of local gigs! A 9:00 PM start time is advertised for this concert, but no age limits or cover charge are advertised. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's good to see Tym rocking The Eagles Club again, and hopefully this packed month will just be the start of more shows from his local projects, so stay tuned for updates, including his Steamy Bean debut on Friday!

Next up, here's the first videos that I've found from Saturday night's Evans Blue-headlined benefit concert at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino! On Monday night, YouTube user Chris Paci (the same guy who uploaded the new Buckcherry concert videos) posted 4 videos from Evans Blue's headlining set onto his YouTube channel, and they include the Toronto hard rock band playing their original songs "Bulletproof", "Over", "Live To Die", and their new album's opening tracks together ("This Time It's Different" & "Crawl Inside"), so click each link to check them out! Overall, the video quality is worse than his Buckcherry videos (very blurry & jittery), but the audio quality's pretty good, and you can make out their catchy melodic hard rock songs pretty well! Hopefully some more videos turn up from this show (including of the opening bands), but check out Chris' videos above, here's Evans Blue playing "This Time It's Different" & "Crawl Inside", and stay tuned for more concert fallout when & if it comes in!

Thirdly today, here's the latest lineup updates on the seventh annual Halloween Party concert from local promoter J.D. Pearce, which moves to The Algonquin Pub on October 27th! The full lineup for the concert has been confirmed via the party's Facebook event page (and this awesome poster from Kevin Powe), and unlike it's past years at the old Coch's Corner, there will 4 bands rather than 3, and one of them is the original crash band themselves, Sykotyk Rampage! The alternative improvised hard rock quartet will make their first concert appearance in almost 3 months for this Halloween party, and their fun drinking songs and diverse originals should draw a crowd in their Algonquin Pub debut! Note that I don't know yet who will be on bass (be it Brian Cattapan, fill-in bassist Tony Briglio, or no one), but hopefully we'll find out sooner or later! The fourth band are actually now the advertised headliners, and they are The Fairmounts, a newer Toronto-based pop punk band who are fronted by veteran local musician Mikey Hawdon! (Lion Ride, Inner City Surfers, etc.) This is one of two local dates that Mikey's playing this month, including the return of his Green Day tribute band The Dookies at The Rockstar Bar next weekend, so you punk lovers (and fans of Mikey's musical work) will probably be very excited!

The Fairmounts remind me of if Lion Ride was all punk, and they should impress in their local debut, so don't miss them at The Algonquin on October 27th! Note as well that this will now be the first Halloween show in this series in many years (if not ever) without the one-off cover band that played each year at Coch's Corner, but hopefully this won't be the absolute last we've heard from them as a unit! Remember to hit this yearly Halloween tradition on October 27th (alongside Frightlight and The Brews, a.k.a. Redundant covering NOFX), so stay tuned for updates, and don't forget your costumes!

And finally for today, here's the latest news from new local thrash metal band Pillory! First, in very exciting lineup news, the guys have enlisted former Late & Loud guitarist Jonathan Tiberi as their new bassist, which is very intriguing in itself! He was quietly added to their lineup on their Facebook page within the last week. I'm unfamiliar with Jon's bass skills, but it's great to see him back in a new band so soon after Late & Loud's breakup/hiatus began, and hopefully he adds well to Pillory going forward! That said, Pillory are hard at work at writing new originals (including a song named "No One Answers" that has yet to be revealed), but their newest video (uploaded to guitarist Robert Sartini's YouTube channel on Monday) is another clip of them (minus Jon) playing their song "Fatal Woods". That said, the video quality is much better, thanks to Wesley Fecteau's filming of the performance and the better camera used, so we have a better glimpse of Pillory in action, and of the promise their thrash metal sound is providing! Check out the newest Pillory video below, and stay tuned for more updates from them as they come in!

That's probably all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews and more news in the next few days! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Haggith) And Weekend Concert Previews, Including The Evans Blue Show!!

It's time for this weekend's local metal & hard rock concert previews, and though the weekend itself is somewhat light, there's a huge concert event going down across the river along with a few other events (not counting any possible ones that I can't source online), so we have an extended preview of that to close this post! For now though, let's begin with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for Sault Ontario on Saturday!

Local grunge quartet Haggith will make their second live concert appearance in Sault Ontario TOMORROW AFTERNOON as a featured act at this year's Art Gallery of Algoma Culture Days! I apologize for the short notice, but news only came on this gig earlier this week, and I didn't wanna redundantly post the same details twice in a brief span. This event is primarily to promote artistic development and exploration, and to let local youths learn art techniques of their own, so for more details on the artistic aspects of this event, click here! That said, there will be musical entertainment from at least one band (that being Haggith), who will be playing two sets outdoors on the Sault Waterfront Boardwalk tomorrow afternoon, and though a specific location isn't advertised, I'd have to assume they'd be fairly close to the Art Gallery of Algoma at 10 East Street (near the library downtown), so aim that route if you wanna check things out! That said, Haggith will play two sets at 2:00 PM & 4:00 PM tomorrow, with two very different sets planned, as per this photo from their Facebook page, but what's in store?

Their first set will comprise of songs from their planned second album "Deuce" & a bunch of covers (including new versions of Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, The Who, and Joe Walsh songs, among others), while their second set will see the guys play their upcoming debut album "Dragon Joy Ride" in full, along with the non-album track "Public Enemy" and what the band are calling an "extended ending" following the reprise of "Wanko". Haggith's performance will be an all ages and FREE event, with them starting at 2:00 PM and Culture Days itself beginning at 1:00 PM tomorrow. Check the above links for more details! Sounds like an entertaining event, and hopefully Haggith continue their local inroads with a successful day of music, so don't miss it! For a preview, here's Haggith covering Cheap Trick's "Reach Out" at a jam session earlier this month!

Now, we'll move to Sault Michigan for the previously announced shows of the weekend, starting with the return of Cheboygan hard rock trio Driven to the area TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT! A month after last hitting St. Ignace for shows at Timmy Lee's Pub, these talented area favourites will cross the Mighty Mac once again to rock The Northern Pines Lounge at the St. Ignace Kewadin Casino for two concerts this weekend, and you know they'll have lots of entertaining hard rock covers in store for their local fans! Oddly, I haven't seen recent mentions from Driven on these shows on their online pages, but hopefully they're still on & ready to rock St. Ignace for these 21+ concerts! No cover charge is likely, and I'd expect them to be on at 10:00 PM tomorrow & Saturday. Check the above links for more details! Driven should deliver a fun weekend of hard rocking covers for their fans in St. Ignace, so consider a drive down there to see them in action, and hopefully we'll get media of them in action at some point!

Finally, it's a special and very notable hard rock concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino TOMORROW NIGHT, as three notable hard rock bands will rock the stage for some great causes! As you may remember, Sault Michigan students Kim Rogers and Kelsey Raffaele tragically passed away in early 2010 in separate area accidents, and four hard rock bands (Pop Evil, Evans Blue, Graveyard Tan, and locals Nixxon Dixxon) came together to play a special benefit concert in their memory that February. Over 2½ years later, Toronto hard rockers Evans Blue will return to Sault Michigan tomorrow night, this time to headline a very similar second event for the same great causes! Proceeds for this show will go towards The Kids Driving Responsibly Challenge (a group launched in Kelsey's memory to help stop texting & driving), as well as scholarships in both Kim & Kelsey's names for local students, which are great causes to help keep their memories alive and help prevent similar accidents in the future!

For Evans Blue, this will be their first local concert appearance with current drummer Dusty Saxton (Howard Davis was on drums during their 2010 show here), but their high tempo Chevelle-ish sound (including hit songs like "Cold (But I'm Still Here)" should go over really nicely in their return, so don't miss them tomorrow night! Opening for them on their current Graveyard of Empires tour will be Ohio hard rock quintet State Your Cause, who should make a splash in their Sault Michigan debut with their melodic and diverse blend of hard rock styles! The opening band will be Detroit hard rock quintet Fifth Way, in their first local concert appearance since opening for The Gin Blossoms at The Dreammaker's Theater in April! Featuring Rudyard native Zak Stelmaszek on guitar, Fifth Way are no stranger to the Soo following a number of notable appearances at Kewadin Casino concerts, and I'd expect the same from their heavy brand of originals tomorrow as well, and yes, they'll be plugged in this time! Also, note that this will be Fifth Way's first local concert appearance with new bassist Victor Wooten, who replaced Mike McMann this summer.

This ALL AGES concert, which is being put on by Allstar Promotions in cooperation with Kewadin Cares and local radio stations Rock 101 & 99.5 Yes FM, surprisingly still has tickets on sale for the ultra cheap price of $10 from the eighth row back (center seating aside.) To buy them the usual way, click here for online purchasing, visit the Kewadin box office in person, call 1-800-KEWADIN, or visit Allstar Graphics on 822 Ashmun Street! However, like the 2010 Pop Evil-headlined concert here, local businesses have joined the cause to help this show sell out and enable local attendees (students in particular) to be able to attend, with many buying or encouraging ticket purchases just for the charitable aspect. Those who buy tickets for non-personal use have been freely distributing them to local schools and people who will want to go, with the radio stations pushing for listeners to buy or match ticket sales, with the person buying the most winning a $100 Allstar Graphics gift card. Everything starts at 7:00 PM tomorrow with Fifth Way opening the festivites, and for more details, check the above links and this brand new article from The Soo Evening News featuring info on the concert and some remarks from Zak Stelmaszek about it! (For the record, I don't know any details on any possible meet & greets, so I'd call ahead just in case.)

This sounds like another awesome concert for some great causes, and hopefully all three bands rock the house both tomorrow and in their joint Traverse City set tonight as well! Kim & Kelsey are definitely still missed locally, and if the money raised and attention given help even in a small way, then it'll all be worth it, and kudos to the bands and organizers for all they're doing! Hopefully the show will be sold out by tomorrow night, and you know we'll have all the fallout as it comes in on it! For now though, let's preview this show with Evans Blue's music video for their song "Erase My Scars", and make sure to buy/obtain your tickets for this huge concert tomorrow night!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for this month's CD review (of Woods of Ypres' third album "Woods III: The Deepest Roots & The Darkest Blues") this weekend, along with more news and notes soon! Thanks everyone!

Sault Riverview Music Festival Preview, New Banned Videos, And Evans Blue Concert Updates!!

Today's news post is 100% devoted to the Sault Michigan area, as some big news across the river has came my way in the last little while, so what's on tap? We've got plenty of news & updates on a major upcoming tribute concert, and new videos from a recently prominent hard rock band, but first, here's our only 100% verified concert preview of the weekend, concerning the first installment of a new local music festival!

TONIGHT marks the debut of The Sault Riverview Music Festival, a two day family event on the north lawn outside of City Hall at 225 East Portage Avenue, and it will feature lots of Sault Michigan-area musical talent and family activities, so here's what you need to know! All proceeds from this event will go towards the Chippewa County Hospice, and aside from the music, you'll get events like beer & concessions tents, music workshops, family games and activities, a fish fry, a 50/50 draw, and even a chance to meet members of the Soo Eagles hockey team, so click here for all details on the event, or look at the poster on your right! As for the schedule of bands, I know most of the performers, though likely not all, as I can't find a full itinerary. According to the poster, local hard rock veterans Monkey's Uncle, young metal quartet Tantrym Tyme (the former Abstract), and Kinross hard rockers Banned (more on them in a second) will be playing TONIGHT alongside local indie rock quartet The London Gentlemen and likely at least one more act. In terms of times, their respective Facebook pages indicate that Tantrym Tyme will open tonight's music lineup at 5:00 PM, while Banned will play at 7:00 PM, but I can't confirm the rest of the times at present.

TOMORROW'S lineup will indeed include a metal band, as despite what the poster tells you, Banned will be on both nights! Their Facebook page states that they'll be on at 3:00 PM tomorrow afternoon, joining fellow Friday crossovers The London Gentlemen, plus some unique acts, including that band's Mike Russo & Steve Sivret in their acoustic project Fallen Heroes, local southern rockers Bittermoon, a band named Omega Rock (can anyone confirm who they are or what they play?), and The Grooves All-Stars, a band likely comprised of staff & instructors at local music store (and festival sponsors) Grooves Music. As well, local acoustic pop duo Missy & Chelsea indicated on their own Facebook event page that they'd be playing tomorrow as well at 6:30 PM (though they're not mentioned on event advertising.) If I hear any updates to the lineup or schedule, I'll try and let you guys know! Admission is FREE for this ALL AGES event, and the music starts at 5:00 PM today and 12:00 PM tomorrow, with both schedules running until 10:00 PM. Check the above links for more details! It's great to see this new festival launching, and hopefully lots of money is raised with the entertaining bands and family entertainment going down, so if you can make it to City Hall today or tomorrow, check everything out!

For a video preview of the festival, we're in luck, as the aforementioned Banned have a few new videos online to check out! A few days ago, frequent filmer & family member Ashley Traynor uploaded three new videos to her YouTube channel of Banned at summer 2012 concerts, so if you've wanted to see them in action again after a few months without new footage, these should work! One is from their set at the Chippewa County Fair's Rock Till You Drop battle of the bands on August 30th, where 3/5ths of the band ("occasional" singer Mike Straw & guitarist Alex Schrovenwever are absent) played their original song "Plaid Girl"! I'm not sure why they were shorthanded, but it's a solid performance, if feeling empty compared to their earlier video of this song from a Gould City concert in May. I'm still not 100% sure on who won, but this video is of good quality and shows the present members of Banned in good form, so check it out at the above links! However, the other new videos are of Banned's full quintet lineup at a concert set of some type on July 28th (I have no idea where, but it's outdoors), and they feature drummer Don Traynor singing lead on covers of The Rockets' "Oh Well" and, as embedded below, AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie"!

The quality's good on these, but the location's still a mystery, and I still think Mike should get chances to sing lead more often, even if his band status is just occasional. Don's vocals don't sound as powerful as I remember from earlier Banned videos, but the guys have talent and it shows, so check out their cover of "Whole Lotta Rosie" below, and go check out Banned this weekend at the Riverview Festival and (if you're up for an hour+ drive) the Michihistrigan Bar in Gould City on Saturday night!

Next up, here's plenty of updates relating to the Evans Blue-headlined benefit concert at The Dreammaker's Theater at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino on September 29th! The third band has been confirmed for this show, and they are Detroit hard rock quintet Fifth Way, who will return to the Soo Kewadin for the first time since opening for The Gin Blossoms there in April! Local fans are bound to recognize Fifth Way for their frequent stops here in recent years and for featuring Rudyard native Zak Stelmaszek on guitar, so prepare for some great modern hard rock from them in their return! Also of note, this will be Fifth Way's first local concert with new bassist Victor Wooten, who replaced Mike McMann in the band earlier this summer. Also in recent concert news, it has been revealed that proceeds from this concert will also go to The Kim Rogers Scholarship Fund, in memory of the late Kim Rogers, a local student who passed away in a snowmobile accident in 2010. It's great to see Allstar Promotions and others associated with the event remembering Kim again for this show, along with The KDR Foundation in memory of the late Kelsey Raffaele, and hopefully funds raised at this show can help both causes just as they did at the 2010 Pop Evil benefit show here!

Now, with that said, how can you support the cause before seeing Evans Blue, State Your Cause, and Fifth Way on the 29th? Of course, tickets are now available for just $10 at 1-800-KEWADIN, online at this location, in person at the Kewadin box office, or at Allstar Graphics on 822 Ashmun Street, who are also owned by Allstar Promotions manager Dave Atkinson. There are plenty of tickets still available in close rows and back, but like at the 2010 Pop Evil show here, there is a huge charitable push to enable this show to be sold out and easy to attend. Local radio stations such as Rock 101 and 99.5 Yes FM are hyping this as well, and the aim is for local businesses and even non-attendees to buy tickets for the cause, so they can be freely distributed to local schools and attendees who will go. The radio stations are also pushing for people to beat or match tickets purchases, with the person who buys the most tickets recieving a $100 gift card for Allstar Graphics. For full details, click here or the above links, and read this article from The Soo Evening News a few days ago! The wheels are in motion to raise a lot of money and awareness in Kim & Kelsey's names, so whether you're a charitable citizen or wanna rock out, you'll be helping the greater good, and on a great ticket bargain, so follow the campaign at the above links, and stay tuned for updates on this show as I hear of them!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news hopefully this weekend and our next two Defunct Local Band Profiles on Monday! Thanks everyone!
