YouTube Channel Profile Series: Jon Tiberious & Handsome Sandwich

Here are our first YouTube Channel Profiles of 2022, and yes, that is a plural, as I had to slightly change plans for this month! Upon actually working on this post, I realized that the local content of the channel we had randomly selected as less than I realized, so I added one more channel with only two videos of the same format to round things out with diverse footage. That said, there's a bunch of familiar faces to see here, so here's what you should know in our latest spotlight on SMS content-heavy YouTube channels!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jon Tiberious (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIeafoJqob6Vzym2yUlJgGw)

Owner: Late & Loud guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Tiberi, also known from local bands like The Daybreak Johnnies, Lazer Queen, and Pillory, the solo projects The Last Warrior of Rock and The Soviet Space Program, and most recently in the Hamilton doom metal band Astral Witch

Channel Timeline: Launched on January 10th, 2014; Videos uploaded from February of that year until March 2019

Channel Summary: A personal use channel, Jonathan uploaded five videos here, though only one comes from a local concert. The rest include one of friends shotgunning beer, a jam session clip of him & friends in Etobicoke, and two clips intended to showcase gear that he was selling online.

Why You Should Watch:
This channel will interest fans of Jonathan's post-Soo music work in particular, especially as it starts with one of Late & Loud's final concerts to date, and there's a surprising amount of diversity on offer regarding the different video content! The jam session video, while really not local beyond his involvement, is an entertaining watch in and of itself! However, note that there are no Astral Witch videos on his channel, let alone anything else in the 2020s.

Our Recommended Videos To Check Out:

late and loud: After disbanding in 2013 following Jonathan's move back to Southern Ontario, Late & Loud resurfaced for two more Rockstar Bar headlining gigs the next year, and this video features the guys playing their set-opener "Trouble" at the first of those dates in February 2014. Featuring Jon alongside Kraken Mara guitarist Brendan Christie, bassist Benn Garside, and drummer Josh Hatherley, the video captures Late & Loud's amusingly dramatic introduction and this lengthy original song fairly well, but the blurry visuals are definitely not optimal. Luckily, the filmer took the camera close to the stage for the last three minutes, so you get a good look at the future Late & Legends podcast crew in axction then!

Orange Rockerverb 50 Mk I: As the most viewed video on Jonathan's channel is the shotgunning one, let's shine a light on #2, which features him covering a medley of classic rock and metal songs on guitar to showcase the Orange Rockerverb 50 Mk I amplifier that he was selling on Kijiji eight years ago. There's a lot of familiar tunes and solos that he nicely plays here, and it wouldn't be fun to spoil them, so give it a watch below, and hopefully we see Jon back in the Soo for a show of some kind down the road!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Handsome Sandwich (http://youtube.com/channel/UCXpa-LZhX_sZQ4Xn82gGvFw)

Owner: A member of local "no genre" quintet Handsome Sandwich, exact identity unclear

Channel Timeline: Launched on June 12th, 2021; Videos uploaded that day and eight days later

Channel Summary: The official YouTube channel for Handsome Sandwich upon their 2021 relaunch, the band quickly uploaded two jam session performances of new original songs (their first after previously being a covers-only trio) towards a planned debut album, both featuring singer Taylor Emlaw (Big Mistake), guitarist Jesse Cook (The Wyld Stallyns), and Bear Hunters bandmates Mitch Sirie & Johnny Belanger on bass & drums. The songs are "All Or Nothing" & (featured here) "Bitter", each recorded in different locations. From the punk/power-pop leanings of the former to the slower, genre-fluid style of the latter, the new look Handsome Sandwich have gotten off to a promising start, and while they've been hard at work in studio as of late, hopefully we'll hear more from their camp soon!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you guys liked this month's YouTube Channel Profiles! This series will return on or around February 26th, while our next post will hit the site by Friday morning, with this month's CD review following over the weekend. Stay tuned, and thanks everyone!

The End Of For All That Is Lost, Another Inactive Band, And More Recent News!!

For our 40th straight day of new SMS posts, today's updates have a bit of a downer feel to them, as we have a major band breakup, another who've likely fallen inactive, and a member departure from another local band in this post. There is some levity concerning a venue change (sort of) for a major upcoming show, but read on below to get caught up on these recent stories!

First, Central Algoma death metal quartet For All That Is Lost have surprisingly announced that they've broken up. In a posting on their Facebook page last night, they announced that they will "no longer be a band", though they added that they had a great run, they appreciated their fans, and they encouraged other local bands to keep their music close & their friends closer. A reason wasn't given for their breakup, though their brief bassist departure status on Facebook from last month could have been linked. This ends a successful three year run for F.A.T.I.L., who launched at CASS Cafe gigs in early 2010 before moving to concerts everywhere from St. Joseph Island to Thessalon, later becoming a favourite at Sault Ontario metal shows from early 2011 through last fall. Memorable concerts included 8 Rosie metal night appearances, their various multi-band gatherings at members' homes, opening slots for bands like Fuck The Facts, and their third place tie at last April's Humane Society Battle of the Bands, though they only played one live concert in the past 7 months.

I really enjoyed For All That Is Lost, and I thought that they had steadily improved as a unit during their run with a lot of brutal originals (plus their unique masked look in many later shows), helping make them arguably the highest profile of the Central Algoma metal bands that sprouted in the early 2010s! I don't know what led to their breakup, but I can only hope things were amicable, as they're talented guys that would all benefit newer bands! Best of luck to Tyler, Brook, Ben, and Kameron in the future, and hopefully we'll hear of new music from them all sooner or later!

Next up, we have another band to add to our inactive local band links, that being the former locally-based metal band Sue Inside. They last updated their then-new Facebook page on April 10th of last year, but they have shown no visible signs of life since then elsewhere, so it seems likely that they fell inactive. Sue Inside had been active since their 2007 inception in Sault Ontario, and they may be best remembered locally for their duo appearances at the Skid Row and YMCA Battles of the Bands in 2008 & 2009 (in fact, they were the last continuously active band from either battle.) After members Shane Lipsit-Fraser & Jeff Vogel moved to Southern Ontario in mid-2009, the band remained active over the next three years, including the addition of Shane's former Paricide bandmate Adam Veen on bass, the posting of many new songs (many of which were acoustic) onto Shane's YouTube channel, and the occasional show in the Sarnia/Oil Springs area, but updates grew more sporadic, and hopes for more concerts & larger activity following their Facebook page's launch don't seem to have panned out.

I think Sue Inside flew under the radar a lot during their run thanks to their small lineup and few live concerts, but they had a solid chaotic death metal sound that would have fit well at newer local metal shows, though from what I heard of the guys with Adam, he added a nice new dimension that I wish we could have heard more of! Best of luck to Shane, Adam, and Jeff in the future, and hopefully they stay musically active going forward!

Now, let's break from the break-ups and departure news briefly to talk about next Saturday's Ripcordz-headlined concert (featuring local metal openers Destroilet & T-Rex Manning!) While the physical location of the show (864 Queen Street East) hasn't changed, the venue still has, as the show has been moved upstairs from The Algonquin Pub & Sports Bar to The Rockstar Bar, as per Destroilet drummer Matt Waples on the Facebook event page this past Wednesday. A reason for the change in floor wasn't announced, but the upstairs bar will arguably give the show a bigger feel, so hopefully this will benefit all involved, and the music will still rock! Nothing else has changed regarding age limits and ticket prices, just the floor. Also, if you've seen a YouTube video about The Algonquin Pub being "born" on March 8th as the Lower Lounge at the Rockstar with a dance nightclub theme, I wouldn't read into it, as that video was posted well before The Ripcordz show was announced, so I don't think metal/punk shows are off limits downstairs. Keep an eye out for any other possible updates on this huge concert coming news weekend!

Finally for today, local thrash band Pillory have announced the departure of bassist Jonathan Tiberi, as per a posting on their Facebook page on Monday (which the band emphasized was not an April Fools joke.) A reason wasn't given, but it's already been reported that Jon's moving back to Southern Ontario later this spring, so that's likely at least part of why he's left. No word yet on if the band will launch a replacement bassist search, but Jon's departure (and guitarist Andres Duchesne's sudden passing in December) leaves just frontman Robert Sartini & drummer Bret Shuttleworth in their current lineup. I expected to start hearing winds of change with Jon's local bands following the news of his impending move, but Pillory's coming first surprised me a bit because he'd been so important & involved with the band's planned "Cringe At The Cross" EP (as seen on Facebook), and after such a promising debut show last fall, it's disappointing that he likely won't be there for their second.

Don't worry though, as he still has one gig with Late & Loud left at the Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands Finals, so best of luck to him in the future no matter what, and contact Pillory at the above links if you're interested in their open guitarist or bassist positions! That's all for today, but stay tuned for hopefully a new news post tomorrow, possibly including a new concert announcement! Thanks everyone!

Another "New" Band Addition, A Returning Band, And New Haggith Videos!!

Happy Halloween everyone! I'm sorry I missed the Garden of Bedlam show last night, but the roads were really bad around my place, and I got busy with some personal stuff last night too, but I'll try and be at the next Garden of Bedlam concert, and hopefully The Rad Zone had a blast for their 18th birthday! I hope to stop in at the store in the next little while, I'm long overdue as it is! Also, we have a concert cancellation, as Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison's solo concert at The Roadhouse Bar & Grill on Friday night is now likely off. A reason for the cancellation wasn't announced, but Tym deleted it's Facebook event page on Monday, which is generally a sign of a concert being cancelled. Disappointing, but hopefully his solo concerts return sooner or later! That all said, we have some other news to get to on this Halloween afternoon, including new videos, a returning local metal project, and leading things off, another "new" band for our inactive local metal band listings, so here's what you need to know!

We have another older local metal project to add to our local metal band links, and it's Pillory bassist/ex-Late & Loud guitarist Jonathan Tiberi's old solo project The Last Warrior of Rock! We touched on this project in 2010 on the site, but at the time, I didn't add it to our band links out of my assessment that it wasn't really a "band". I must not have investigated that far, because The Last Warrior of Rock definitely qualifies! Active from roughly 2007-2009, a then-clean shaven Jon launched the project out of his hometown of Welland before he moved with the project to Sault Ste. Marie in 2008. He recorded solo material under this name, apparently recorded a demo CD of some type featuring this material, and has a bunch of photos online in fitting "warrior" gear on the project's MySpace page, while he also maintained a separate MySpace page in 2009 for acoustic originals. On at least one photo, it's cited that he played a solo concert set as The Last Warrior of Rock on at least one occasion too, which would have been interesting to see!

Though he's improved his skills since, it's interesting to hear Jon's earlier original work! The Last Warrior of Rock's songs do have a darker & edgier feel than Late & Loud had, like on "Fields of Blood & Steel", while his unplugged tracks also work well, and actually compliment his singing range better, but the recording quality is somewhat rough. His acoustic page also has some videos, including a cover of Troubled Horse's "Bring My Horses Home", but I thought I'd share this live Sault College open mic night performance of an original named "So It Can Be" below, so give it a look, and The Last Warrior of Rock is now in our inactive Sault Ontario band links!

Next up, another local metal band is back after a recent stretch of inactivity, that being Sault Ontario industrial metal duo Riverin! According to their posting on their newly updated Facebook page yesterday, members/ex-Dirty Virgin bandmates Matt Hicks & Matt Clement have decided to resume activity with Riverin after "a hiatus", while also adding that the project & it's music means the world to them, and promising to have new music soon as well. Riverin were initially active from 2009 through last year, and had recorded at least eight songs at Quartertone Studios (most of which you can hear here) towards a planned debut EP before public activity dried up last spring, with personal Facebook page references ending last September. I'm not sure why Riverin were on hiatus for the past year or so, but it's great to see the Matts giving the project another shot, as Riverin were a welcome change from the usual metal subgenres we hear from locally, and they had some creative material!

No word yet on what will become of their old originals or EP plans, but stay tuned for Riverin news and notes as it rolls in, and they're now back in our active Sault Ontario metal band links!

Finally, here's a couple more of the new videos from local grunge band Haggith! Joining earlier uploads from their Canada Day weekend sets in Goulais River, the band posted two new videos from their sets that weekend onto their YouTube channel on Saturday, and they include a second video of their song "Livin' It On The Run" from a different camera, and as embedded below, a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here"! Given these shows' private nature, it's great to see more videos popping up from them, and the then-trio were in solid early form, but I am curious to hear them do some more energetic covers, as their covers (that I've heard) strike me as too reserved & not perfect fits for their sound. Still well done though, so give Haggith's Pink Floyd cover a look below, check the above links for more new and old Haggith videos, and keep an eye out for our last new video of theirs shortly!

That's likely all for this month (which was thankfully busier for news than September was) but stay tuned tomorrow or Friday for weekend concert previews & more news, as well as next month's "Where Are The New Albums" post soon as well! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), Evans Blue Fallout, And Much More!!

We've got more news and notes to share on this Wednesday morning, so what's on tap for this news post? Today, we have the latest news from a new local thrash band (including their new bassist), the complete lineup of a major Halloween weekend concert event, and the first videos from a recent Kewadin Casino concert, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this month!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison has added another acoustic solo concert to his October schedule, and it will see him return to The Eagles Club one week from Saturday! Over a year & a half since his bi-weekly concert arrangement at the Old Trout Lake Road venue dried up, he'll head back up north for an unplugged concert of unplugged metal & hard rock hits on October 13th, so if you live up near Christie's Camper Sales (or are up for the drive), add this show to Tym's busy month of local gigs! A 9:00 PM start time is advertised for this concert, but no age limits or cover charge are advertised. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! It's good to see Tym rocking The Eagles Club again, and hopefully this packed month will just be the start of more shows from his local projects, so stay tuned for updates, including his Steamy Bean debut on Friday!

Next up, here's the first videos that I've found from Saturday night's Evans Blue-headlined benefit concert at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino! On Monday night, YouTube user Chris Paci (the same guy who uploaded the new Buckcherry concert videos) posted 4 videos from Evans Blue's headlining set onto his YouTube channel, and they include the Toronto hard rock band playing their original songs "Bulletproof", "Over", "Live To Die", and their new album's opening tracks together ("This Time It's Different" & "Crawl Inside"), so click each link to check them out! Overall, the video quality is worse than his Buckcherry videos (very blurry & jittery), but the audio quality's pretty good, and you can make out their catchy melodic hard rock songs pretty well! Hopefully some more videos turn up from this show (including of the opening bands), but check out Chris' videos above, here's Evans Blue playing "This Time It's Different" & "Crawl Inside", and stay tuned for more concert fallout when & if it comes in!

Thirdly today, here's the latest lineup updates on the seventh annual Halloween Party concert from local promoter J.D. Pearce, which moves to The Algonquin Pub on October 27th! The full lineup for the concert has been confirmed via the party's Facebook event page (and this awesome poster from Kevin Powe), and unlike it's past years at the old Coch's Corner, there will 4 bands rather than 3, and one of them is the original crash band themselves, Sykotyk Rampage! The alternative improvised hard rock quartet will make their first concert appearance in almost 3 months for this Halloween party, and their fun drinking songs and diverse originals should draw a crowd in their Algonquin Pub debut! Note that I don't know yet who will be on bass (be it Brian Cattapan, fill-in bassist Tony Briglio, or no one), but hopefully we'll find out sooner or later! The fourth band are actually now the advertised headliners, and they are The Fairmounts, a newer Toronto-based pop punk band who are fronted by veteran local musician Mikey Hawdon! (Lion Ride, Inner City Surfers, etc.) This is one of two local dates that Mikey's playing this month, including the return of his Green Day tribute band The Dookies at The Rockstar Bar next weekend, so you punk lovers (and fans of Mikey's musical work) will probably be very excited!

The Fairmounts remind me of if Lion Ride was all punk, and they should impress in their local debut, so don't miss them at The Algonquin on October 27th! Note as well that this will now be the first Halloween show in this series in many years (if not ever) without the one-off cover band that played each year at Coch's Corner, but hopefully this won't be the absolute last we've heard from them as a unit! Remember to hit this yearly Halloween tradition on October 27th (alongside Frightlight and The Brews, a.k.a. Redundant covering NOFX), so stay tuned for updates, and don't forget your costumes!

And finally for today, here's the latest news from new local thrash metal band Pillory! First, in very exciting lineup news, the guys have enlisted former Late & Loud guitarist Jonathan Tiberi as their new bassist, which is very intriguing in itself! He was quietly added to their lineup on their Facebook page within the last week. I'm unfamiliar with Jon's bass skills, but it's great to see him back in a new band so soon after Late & Loud's breakup/hiatus began, and hopefully he adds well to Pillory going forward! That said, Pillory are hard at work at writing new originals (including a song named "No One Answers" that has yet to be revealed), but their newest video (uploaded to guitarist Robert Sartini's YouTube channel on Monday) is another clip of them (minus Jon) playing their song "Fatal Woods". That said, the video quality is much better, thanks to Wesley Fecteau's filming of the performance and the better camera used, so we have a better glimpse of Pillory in action, and of the promise their thrash metal sound is providing! Check out the newest Pillory video below, and stay tuned for more updates from them as they come in!

That's probably all for today, but stay tuned for weekend concert previews and more news in the next few days! Thanks everyone!

Another Local Metal Video Showcase!!!

Hey guys, it's video time at the SMS! Lots of new local metal-related videos to share today, thanks to some new uploads on YouTube! News will come tomorrow, but now, it's movie time, get your popcorn! Oh, and VOTE IN THE NEW SMS POLL!

We'll start with a new live video from locals Lion Ride! This comes from frontman Mikey Lion's YouTube channel, and it's a performance from their show on Wednesday in Burlington at The Red Rooster with The Saigon Hookers! Now do you notice that Diamond Brent Panther and Marco Lion are missing? Let me explain. You probably heard that Brent left the band, but Marco sadly had to miss this gig. Carmine Romano from The Saigon Hookers is filling in on bass for this tour stretch, and their frontman Tommy Smokes joined on guitar for this song. As Tommy only knows his band's stuff, Lion Ride covered The Saigon Hookers song "She Blows My Mind"! To my knowledge, the rest of the songs had Lion Ride as a four piece. Doesn't sound bad, it has good energy, reminds me of Lion Ride's own originals! I'm not too familiar with The Saigon Hookers, but this sounds really good, I'll have to check them out! And of course, you guys can check it out below!

Next up, while we wait for a new show announcement from local punk/metal band Destroilet, fans can be tided over with this new video that surfaced from their debut performance from this past December at the Detroit CD release concert at Coch's Corner! It's a cover of the song "Evil God Hater" by Fist Magnet, themselves a classic local band! This was just uploaded yesterday on the band's YouTube channel. The video could be better, it was filmed from pretty far behind the crowd, you get a better angle of the backs of everyone's heads then the band (You can make me out pretty easily, my long hair stands out.) Only 90 seconds, I don't think it's the full song, but it sounds good! The sound redeems the video, it sounds really clear! Heavy with a punk sensibility to it, Mike Hull sounds really aggressive vocally, and the guitar's really good too! Check it out for yourself!

Thirdly, we have a new commercial from local hard rockers Stillbroke for their first EP, "Never Enough"! This was uploaded onto Stillbroke's YouTube channel on Thursday. Here's the commercial's synopsis: Frontman Jesse Frigault smashes an old piano with a sledgehammer, with their song "Wash It Away" playing in the background! I think in ways, this symbolizes Stillbroke's musical approach, smashing an old instrument they wouldn't use in favor of their own style! Plus, if you're a fan of the heavier stuff, seeing Jesse destroy the piano is cool! The video ends with info on how to pick up "Never Enough" and a picture of the band's current lineup! I think the video works, what do you think? See for yourself, especially if you like Stillbroke and hate pianos!

Next, here's a type of video we don't see often in the local metal scene: An autograph signing! Sault Michigan fans will still likely remember the Pop Evil benefit concert at Kewadin Casino from February 27th, and as it turns out, the show was preceded by a meet and greet/autograph session! I believe this was in Kewadin Casino itself, but don't quote me, I wasn't there. The video primarily focuses on Evans Blue frontman Dan Chandler signing an autograph for one of the younger fans (Never too early to rock!) The video was uploaded by YouTube user KrisJamieson09, who also uploaded the "A Step Back" performance from the Sault show. This clip's only 25 seconds long, but it's cool to see a different side of a performing band from a local show for a change! Autograph signings should happen more often for major local shows like this, don't you think? Take a look!

The final two videos tonight come from a pair of local metal guitarists! Well, I say two videos because I'm only embedding two here, they have plenty more on their respective YouTube accounts! Firstly, we come to local metal guitarist Brendan Christie, whose solo work has impressed me in the past! He has a YouTube channel of his own now, previously his videos had been hosted on the next guitarist I'm mentioning's account. Compared to what we typically hear from Brendan on MySpace, most of his YouTube performances take a more classical bent, showing off his talent a lot! Never hurts to be diverse! Two of the videos I've seen before, three I haven't, and I'm still impressed! If he's not in a local band yet, he should be! Here's the coolest one he has uploaded so far, a 64 second free-style tapping solo! Thumbs up from me!

And finally, we come to a friend of Brendan's, and fellow local guitarist, Jonathan Tiberi (a.k.a. The Last Warrior of Rock!) You may recognize Jonathan as the guitarist for the local metal band Losing Ground, and for his own solo work, which you can check out on MySpace! Like Brendan, he has some good guitar skills, and hopefully we'll see more of it to come! He has lots of videos on his YouTube channel, ranging from his own performance videos, to videos where he talks to the YouTube audience, to some different clips like some Rock Band 2 gameplay and cooking videos, and more! Of the videos where he plays guitar, they're mostly covers, some acoustic, some electric, including a "Name That Riff" video, and even some bass stuff! He's good, though I'd like to see more original stuff on YouTube too. There's some originals, including one of Losing Ground, but let's see some more! I'll show you guys one of his covers, here's his version of "Wooden Cross" by Witchcraft!

Hope you guys enjoy these videos, there's more to come! And yes, there's news coming too, including photos from a big recent show, a local band's drummer search, and more! Stay tuned!
