LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Shit Happens) & Saint Asonia Concert Previews!!

Here's another new post on this Saturday morning, which is mostly devoted to recent concert videos from a major concert last month, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this month!

Winnipeg punk quartet Shit Happens will make their local concert debut on Monday, March 25th when they headline at The Distraction! While not the first touring act booked at the East Street barbershop-turned-concert venue, I believe Shit Happens (not to be confused with the Soo's own Shit Liver) are the first full metal or punk band from out of town to play there, as opposed to a solo project, so this will be neat! Shit Happens are touring Eastern Canada and a select few U.S. cities this month, with the local show being the final date before they head back to Manitoba. Expect an upbeat and in your face brand of punk originals from this female fronted group two weeks from Monday! Local support will come by way of metal trio The BAG in their Distraction debut and second show of 2024, and while not a clean genre match to Shit Happens, the energy should be hopping for their hard hitting originals and covers later this month!

Despite the touring headline band, this show is standard for protocol with The Distraction's all-local events, including no age limit, a 7:00 PM start time, and a "$5 or pay what you can" entry model. While an early night with no 19+ limit hanging overhead, the Monday scheduling and relative short notice may give some pause, but if you like explosive modern punk rock, don't miss out on the action on the 25th! Next up, we finally have some videos to feature from last month's Saint Asonia concert at The Dreammakers Theatre at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino! After a near two week delay, prolific local concert filmer Christopher Paci uploaded videos from the show to his excellent YouTube channel, and he spoiled us this time, filming eighteen videos across the three bands that night! Half of his videos come from the headliners, with Chris filming multiple originals and covers from the Toronto hard rock quartet. In terms of covers, you can see Saint Asonia covering frontman Adam Gontier's old band Three Days Grace's "Never Too Late", "I Hate Everything About You", and "Riot", while they also tackled Apocalyptica's "I Don't Care" (which Adam guested on originally). The rest of the filmed songs began with Saint Asonia, aside from their own recent cover of The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights".

The originals filmed here are "Better Place", "Wolf", "Let Me Live My Life", and as embedded below, their set opener "Above It All". Chris had a nice spot in the center section with good zoom usage and a relatively clear view of the stage (fans' heads in front of him acknowledged), and Saint Asonia sound great, with Adam's vocals crystal clear in the mix! I recall that he was more muffled when Three Days Grace came here last, but of course, arena acoustics could have been a factor. Chris also filmed Kentucky southern hard rock band Black Stone Cherry in six videos, getting them playing "White Trash Millionaire", "When The Pain Comes", their medley of The Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See" and their own "In My Blood", "Blame It On The Boom Boom", "Lonely Train", and as embedded below, their set-opening songs "Me & Mary Jane" and "Burnin'". Good stuff all around from these talented rock radio mainstays, who have established themselves so much since they last came here in 2006, so give their videos a watch above and below as well!

Finally, Maryland hard rock quartet Any Given Sin were filmed for three of Chris' videos, specifically their songs "Insidious", "The Way I Say Goodbye", and as embedded below, "House On Fire". Hopefully these guys continue on their upward trajectory, as their melodic and soaring originals seemed to play well with local attendees last month, and they definitely seem like a band we'll hear more from on the radio in the coming months! Saint Asonia/Black Stone Cherry & Tarnished Concert Previews, Plus New Videos!!

As promised, let's round out this weekend's hard rock concert previews today via the two Sault Michigan/E.U.P. hard rock concerts that we didn't preview in yesterday's post! To round things out, I do have some new videos of a prominent local band, so here's what you should know!

We'll start with this weekend's main event for hard rock fans, as Toronto hard rock quartet Saint Asonia will make their first ever local concert appearance TOMORROW NIGHT at The Dreammakers Theatre at the Sault Ste. Marie Kewadin Casino! As well promoted on Rock 101 in recent months, Saint Asonia's debut will mark frontman Adam Gontier's first time on a local stage since he and his old band Three Days Grace last played here in 2009. Along with a few 3DG hits and select covers, look for Saint Asonia's own hard hitting originals like "Better Place", "The Hunted", and "Devastate" during what should be an explosive set! Note that Saint Asonia's usual guitarist (Staind's Mike Mushok) is not part of this tour. Also playing tomorrow is Kentucky southern hard rock band Black Stone Cherry, in their first local concert appearance since 2006 (when they opened for Staind, incidentally), so they've been a very long time coming!

With rock radio hits like "In My Blood", "Again", and "White Trash Millionaire" in the eighteen years since , familiarity with B.S.C. will be much greater for this set, so hopefully they get a really strong reaction for their southern tinged rock & roll! Maryland hard rock quartet Any Given Sin will open the proceedings with their high energy, Shinedown-reminiscent brand of original material, so don't be late for their set tomorrow! This is the first major concert of 2024 from Allstar Promotions, and you can see brief promotional videos on their Facebook page featuring both Adam Gontier and Black Stone Cherry guitarist Ben Wells hyping up the show/ticket availability, which are definitely welcomed to get the word out, especially as both pronounced Sault Ste. Marie correctly! Tomorrow's all ages concert has an 8:00 PM start time, and third row tickets are still on sale in the left & right sections!

Center section tickets are all sold out in the first thirteen rows. Tickets run for $39.50 in rows C-J (left and right sections) and row N (center section only), while anything else left costs just $29.50. I hope this show does well, as I greatly prefer Saint Asonia to modern Three Days Grace, and Black Stone Cherry have multiple catchy songs of their own, so definitely consider heading to Kewadin Casino for all of tomorrow night's action! Lastly for known hard rock concerts in the Sault area this weekend, we'll take the 20 minute drive south to Kincheloe, where local classic metal/hard rock trio Tarnished will return to The Fraternal Order Of Orioles Nest TOMORROW NIGHT! This atypical venue brought in Tarnished for their New Year's Eve party last year, so clearly that went well for Alex, Parker, and Josh to get a call back for a standard concert less than two months later! Regardless of how normal the venue is for Tarnished fans, you can expect the same hard hitting and fan friendly covers and originals in Kincheloe tomorrow, so consider hitting the road for the Orioles Nest tomorrow for all of the action! This show takes place at Nest 311 (at 4916 West Curtis Street) at 8:00 PM, it has a 21+ age limit, and there is no announced cover charge. Finally for today, here's some new videos of local blues/hard rock quartet Project 906, but not how you may expect to see them. Fans may recall that, when drummer Jason VanLuven had to miss a few shows last summer due to conflicts with his other band Fake Chow, they enlisted Paradise Excuse alum Brian Duford to fill in behind the kit. Well, that wasn't it for Brian playing with Project 906, as he has guested with the band since on shows that Jason was there for, albeit with Brian playing hand drums instead! Three videos from recent 906 shows have been uploaded to his YouTube channel, all ostensibly intended to focus on his performances moreso than the whole band. This one (likely from their Brimley VFW concert in November) has Brian and Project 906 playing an extended instrumental for their soundcheck, while this vertical clip is of his drum solo at The Strongs Tavern in Eckerman this past Saturday.

The latter clip is shot from the crowd, but the other two are drum-cam videos, including the one embedded below, which is the only one of everyone playing a proper cover song. In this video, also from The Strongs Tavern on Saturday, Project 906 and Brian covered The Who's "Eminence Front", albeit extended with some more jamming in the middle. Rare to see a Kenney Jones-era Who song covered locally, so kudos there! The venue lighting can impair the view sometimes, but this is certainly a unique concert video, and everyone performs well, including Brian, and he does add a looser vibe to Project 906 shows from what I've seen! LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Saint Asonia), Toystock Band Clarifications, And More!!

Alright, let's finally start clearing out our backlog of topics and news from the last while (joys of the holidays), and we'll start with some unfinished business from a recent charity concert, some assorted updates, and leading off, a big LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for early next year!

Here's the big show announced earlier this week, as Toronto hard rock quartet Saint Asonia will make their local debut on Saturday, February 24th when they headline at The Dreammakers Theatre at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino! Saint Asonia is the current band from former Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier and (when available) Staind guitarist Mike Mushok, and while they haven't had the continued rock radio success/airplay as modern 3DG have gotten, I personally greatly prefer Saint Asonia's originals like "Better Place" and "The Hunted". Adam does still tackle Three Days Grace songs live, and select other covers, so if you've missed that band since their last Sault Ontario date fourteen years ago, don't miss out! Kentucky-based southern hard rock band Black Stone Cherry will make their long awaited return to the Soo as openers, last seen at The Dreammakers Theater opening for Staind way back in 2006!

Since we last saw B.S.C. in town seventeen long years ago, they bettered their early Billboard rock chart success with songs like "White Trash Millionaire" and "In My Blood", and they're a very skilled group in their own right with a fun energy, so don't miss them either! Opening this show and tour are rising Maryland hard rock quartet Any Given Sin, whose technical and heavy brand of melodic hard rock will definitely set a good tone in a couple of months, so don't be late for their set! Promoted by Allstar Promotions in their 2024 debut and presented by Rock 101, tickets run for $29.50 (row 15 and back in the center section, row 11 and back in the left and right sections, and standing room only), $39.50 (closer seating), and $139.50 (first 8 rows in the center plus a full VIP package including priority access, show memorabilia, and a meet & greet with Saint Asonia.)

Tickets are on sale for this all ages & 8:00 PM concert at this link, at the in-person box office, or at 1-800-KEWADIN. This feels like such a throwback to the 2000s via the returns of Adam, Mike, and Black Stone Cherry a decade+ after last performing in Sault Ste. Marie, and I hope this show does well, especially given that we lucked into this being a Saturday nighter! I do highly recommend Saint Asonia to fans of old school Three Days Grace too, they deserve way more success on the charts. Next up, let's move north to Sault Ontario for some clarification on three bands that played at this year's tenth annual Toystock at The Grand Gardens on November 26th! First off, the debuting online page-less band Headrush was a new classic rock quintet featuring veteran local bassist John Amendola (Cherry Crush, Tripod the Dog, etc.) and singer John Anderson, though I couldn't immediately identify the other band members. A video is floating around on personal Facebook accounts of Headrush covering Foreigner's "Hot Blooded", and it sounds good, but it is incomplete. Give it a look if you're friends with anyone connected to the band! Earlier in the program, new local rock quartet Skinbox played at Toystock, and they have since revealed via promotion for their shows at Jay's this weekend that they play "90s/2000s alt rock", with The Arctic Monkeys cited as a band that they cover. Not overly heavy on the surface, but their familiar lineup is definitely capable of it!

Lastly from Toystock's mystery/cryptic band array, new local rock band Kickstart is a new trio featuring ex-Suicide Kings guitarist Steven Flint alongside ex-Sneaky Pete bandmates Sean Berlinguette & Mike Oakley (I am unsure who sings here). If any of these three bands lean to what we cover on the SMS, it'd likely be Kickstart, but at press time, they don't have an online page that I am aware of. We'll let you know when/if anything else comes out, but hopefully these bands and the known commodites had a great time for Christmas Cheer on the 26th!

Finally for today, here's three shorter assorted news items from the last while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

 

• In his newest post on his Facebook page on November 22nd, local hard rock solo musician Mike McCleary revealed that he is working on a soundtrack for a novel being written by a local author, which will be instrumental in line with his recent solo output. There's no timeline or details to spill yet, as Mike's keeping things close to his vest until he and the author are happy with the results, but he has wrote at least two songs for it. We'll keep you posted when more details come out, but this is certainly unique locally!
• Local indie/punk quintet The Northwest were featured in the November 26th episode of The Music Jerks Radio Show on Canadian internet radio station Alt Rock Radio, where hosts Kristen Goetz & Nolan Jodes played one of their original songs along with ten other tracks. I don't believe that the episode is hearable on demand, but hopefully The Northwest made some new fans two weeks ago, and don't miss them at LopLops in two weeks!
• Just to clarify more details on another new online page-less local band's identity, The Psychic Spies (who, as far as I know, share members with Skinbox) are indeed a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band, so inferring that based on "Psychic spies" being the first words sung in "Californication" was prescient. The Chili Peppers' career doesn't lean heavier anymore, but fans should take to The Psychic Spies, who are playing with Skinbox at Jay's Piston Broke Pub this weekend, so visit the Facebook event page for details!

New Archive Video Uploads Of No Arrow & Faithless Sin!!

Just a heads up, this post is the first on the SMS that I've had to make using Blogger's new editor interface which was rolled out earlier this year. I am not an immediate fan of it, and I have already had to check online help forums to answer questions about where certain things are, so if anything looks amiss, that's why. Hopefully things are sorted out soon!

Today's post is devoted to archive videos from prolific local rock musician Joe Falco's YouTube channel, which we alluded to in a post on the site three weeks ago, as Joe was in the late stages of a massive upload streak of videos from his run in live bands in the mid-late 2000s. Let's start with the biggest of his past groups, namely 2005-2011 grunge/alternative rock trio No Arrow (née Murder Playground), who are the subject of 25 of his videos in the last few months! These include a now-band official upload of all 12 songs from their unreleased studio album "Souls For Sale" and a few videos that were previously uploaded on frontman Dann Pichette's YouTube channel. Joe's uploads, brand new or otherwise, include three videos from a weekend at The Canadian Nightclub in April 2007, two from a Sault Area Wrestling event at The Elks Lodge that fall, two from The Speak Easy at Algoma University, three from Madison's Pub (now The Harp Bar & Grill), a rehearsal jam of "One On The Line", and a Fitswitch parody under their original name.

Embedded below is 62 minutes of an early No Arrow set at Madison's Pub in November 2006, though it doesn't capture the entire performance due to tape limitations. Featuring Dann and Joe alongside original bassist Jason Bourcier (more on him in a bit), this concert took place on Jason's birthday, and it features 17 songs, though only 5 are originals at this stage. In order, you can see the guys play Local H's "All Right, Oh Yeah", Helmet's "Unsung", The Melvins' "Revolve", their original "Bleed Your Hate", Nirvana's "Stain", The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage", their unreleased album's title track "Souls For Sale", Local H's "Cool Magnet", their own "Genocyde Revealing", The Melvins' "Youth of America", part of Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" with a guest guitarist, their original "Delayed Reaction", Local H's "Bound For The Floor", Motorhead's "Ace of Spades", their own "One On The Line", and two final Local H songs (part of "Everyone Alive" and "All The Kids Are Right".)

It's awesome seeing a lengthy No Arrow video like this, albeit 14 years later, and while the VHS camcorder quality isn't ideal (smartphones weren't ubiquitous yet), the raw intensity is on full display!  Of course, any fans of Local H will want to give this a special look, especially as you don't hear them covered often nowadays. Speaking of bands that Jason and Joe were in together, let's now look at another old band that Joe has uploaded content from, namely their old 2005-2007 thrash metal band Faithless Sin! Here featuring Jason on vocals (a'la Operation: Killdozer) and Joe on guitar, this band also features guitarist Frank LaTassa (Quite Frankly), bassist Ryan Gratton (Chronic Demonic) and drummer Mark Parent in their lone video, but Mike DiPasquale preceded Frank in the band, and Gates of Winter alum Jonathan Harvey drummed in their brief 2010 reunion. Faithless Sin never got far off the ground, and have no known public concerts to their name, but some members did more collectively in their successor band Time of Ruin from 2007-2008. Joe has uploaded four videos representing Faithless Sin, including two crude audio copies of originals ("Chaos Reigns" & "River Flows Cold"), plus a better quality recording of two Slayer covers. Embedded below is Faithless Sin's only surviving video!

Also filmed via that VHS camcorder, this is very much a jam session recording, and Joe is very forthcoming in the video description if a song was a jam or rough, plus what he wishes the video would have captured from their setlist at the time. In order, the guys can be seen playing Slayer's "War Ensemble" as a soundcheck, Megadeth's "She-Wolf", In Flames' "Behind Space 99", Sepultura's "Refuse/Refist", their combined version of Slayer's "Die By The Sword" & "Black Magic", a jam of Pantera's "Fucking Hostile" from a different camera angle, another loose jam of Metallica's "My Friend of Misery" with Joe on vocals, two separate run-throughs of their original "Chaos Reigns" (a first-time jam and a proper performance), and finally, Metallica's "Blackened". Camera aside, this raw and brutal rehearsal captures a promising band that I'd have liked to have seen go further locally! Our view of Faithless Sin is only optimal on the Pantera cover though.

On songs that Joe doesn't give a disclaimer for, everyone sounds tight and dialed in, and Jay's groove-influenced growl adds the extra bark (that's a good comparison), and given that Frank had just joined the band, he fit right in on certain songs! YouTube Channel Profile Series: syrfer72, Ryan Gratton, and turnerup100's Channels

It's now time for this month's YouTube Channel Profiles, as we once again take a look at 1-3 randomly selected YouTube channels with a 50% (or more) ratio of local metal, hard rock, and punk videos, so you guys can read up on them, watch their content, and hopefully subscribe! For a third straight month, we're looking at multiple channels due to the first channel selected having minimal content, but like last month, the second channel had a similar situation, so we have a full maximum of three today! There's still some interesting and varied stuff to check out from the last decade, so check out this month's profiles below!

Channel Summary: This channel's only video is of hard rock legends Kiss playing one of their signature songs "Detroit Rock City" during their memorable headlining concert at The Essar Centre the day before the video's upload. Filmed from roughly the centre of the floor, you get a good (but far) angle of Kiss and the loud pyrotechnics, and the audio quality's respectable, but the video quality is fairly blurry. This was a great concert from Gene, Paul, and company, and this video (among others from this show) capture it well! Note however that syrfer72 has not updated their channel since 2011.

Channel Summary: Though Ryan still actively uses his channel, he's only uploaded two videos there, and none in over a year. One is an audio recording of him and a friend playing an acoustic song named "A Camel Named Bill", but his only SMS-fitting video is of his defunct thrash metal band Faithless Sin covering Slayer's "Die By The Sword" and "Black Magic" back in 2006. Featuring their original lineup (including Ryan, Fitswitch alum Jason Bourcier on vocals, guitarists Joe Falco and Frank La Tassa, and drummer Mark Parent), Ryan apologized for the audio quality on these covers, which were recorded on a video camera and converted to audio, but they're not that bad, just lacking some clarity. The guys had a strong sound here, and the video is definitely worth a listen, though the band was arguably beat in prominence by their late 2000s successors Time of Ruin.

Channel Timeline: Launched on January 15th, 2012; Only video posted that same day

Channel Summary: Though ostensibly created as an official Turner Up YouTube channel, the only video uploaded there was of their then-sister band Havadder, who shared four members with Turner Up for the duration of their second run. Featuring Turner Up's Jason Roy on vocals & guitar, Robert Brown on guitar, Travis Sharpe on bass, and Scott McLurg on drums alongside Havadder-only guitarist Jason Nisbet, this video comes from a gig at The Nicolet Tavern (now The Rednecks Saloon) on January 6th, 2012 where they covered Seven Mary Three's "Cumbersome", and it's a well done rendition of this 1990s rock hit! The lighting is inconsistent, and the audio's slightly muddled, but it's one of the better videos of this Havadder lineup, though all but Jason Roy have since left the band and formed the similar new cover band The Thrill Junkies last year. Note as well that this channel hasn't been visibly updated since Turner Up's dissolution.

New Song Uploads & Much More Recent Updates!!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend! Today at the SMS, we're mostly tackling some smaller news stories, especially as a few big concerts are still awaiting either a venue confirmation, a public announcement that they're indeed happening, or this weekend's concert preview posts, as at least two were announced too late to warrant posting twice in a stretch of a few days. Along with some feature profile updates and more notes, we'll start with some new song uploads, so read on below to get caught up!

First, we have a surprise new live recording upload from defunct local metal band Faithless Sin! Bassist Ryan Gratton (now of Chronic Demonic) uploaded this to his YouTube channel yesterday, and it features their 2006 lineup covering "Die By The Sword" & "Black Magic" from Slayer's first album "Show No Mercy". According to his personal Facebook post on this upload, the lineup present here includes Ryan alongside Winkstinger's Jason Bourcier on vocals, guitarists Joe Falco & Frank La Tassa, and drummer Mark Parent. Ryan did apologize for the recording quality, but it's not unlistenable, just a little rough sounding, especially in terms of vocal clarity. The guys have these songs well in hand, and it's a nice sampling of the sound that Jason & Mark brought to Faithless Sin's late 2000s successors Time of Ruin! Next up, here's a new song from local goregrind solo project Crucify the Whore! Expected to be on their forthcoming full length demo early next year, this song is called "People These Days", and it was uploaded to their label Blood Shed Productions' YouTube channel on Sunday. Compared to many of their earlier songs, the instrumentation sounds fuller and more complete (I like the guitar work), but it's fairly muffled in contrast to Ringsnaps Gibson's pig squeal vocals, which are still going to polarize listeners who aren't existing fans of the style. I like the musical expansion though! Check out "People These Days" below, and stay tuned for more from the label soon!



Also today, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band or store name:

• Local sludge/stoner metal trio AlgomA are looking for someone who can film and record their concerts for 62nd Chamber Productions film projects, as per 62nd Chamber's Facebook page yesterday. Experience with video camera & audio recording equipment is a plus, and for now at least, the position is a volunteer role. • Spring Street music/lessons shop Colosimo's Music Store has apparently already closed. A statement hasn't been made, but their Facebook page & website are both down, and there has been no employee posts on their surviving Facebook groups since May, so I take it they quietly closed local operations this summer. It's disappointing that they couldn't succeed longer here, but with 4 established Sault Ontario music stores to compete with, they were already in a crowded market. I've moved Colosimo's to our "Other Sault Ontario Links", and best of luck to all of the former staff!
• Sault Michigan classical metal project Theatre of Night have posted two new instrumental demos onto their Reverbnation page, presumably towards their next albums, including a new version of "A Wintery Mix" and a brand new track named "Nosferatu's Dream". Starting in our Battle of the Bands Rewind Profiles, I added a link to the Fresh Magazine interview with Downtown Showdown winners Bring The Fallen in our profile of that battle, as the interview was a prize for their victory, while I replaced the recently inactive Daybreak Johnnies with the newer band The Hydra's Teeth (who also have Late & Loud members) when noting the later bands of performers at the Humane Society Battle of the Bands in our profile of it. Finally, I edited notes on the Battle for the Blood profile to note that the scoring for that battle was done by a paper voting ballot, not by crowd reaction, as a battle under similar rules and promotion is in the works (and we'll have more on that here when announced, so stay tuned!) Moving back to our YouTube Channel Profile Updates, I edited references on our profile of Stillbroke's YouTube channel to further emphasize their breakup last year (with Jesse & Sam moved out of town, it's more than a hiatus at this point) Lastly for now, I expanded the videos on all 2011 profiles & the remaining Sault Michigan profiles in this series. LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Theatre Of Night), SweetKenny & Mike Haggith Updates, And More!!

We have more news to get to as we kick off the last week of May 2013, but before that, I'll note that I'm bumping our Saultites In Out Of Town Bands Profile on Giwakwa guitarist Chris Page's old band Lead The Dead to tomorrow so I don't de-emphasize the content of today's post, which includes a preview for a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT!! It's for a great cause too, and it's the debut of a popular local band, so I wanted to give that the proper attention, so for that and more updates from two local solo projects and much more, read on below!

Sault Michigan classical metal band Theatre of Night will make their live concert debut TOMORROW in the parking lot of The Corner Pub Bar & Grill to help honour Memorial Day! Apologies for the short notice, the Facebook event page was only just created on Friday night. For the occasion, Theatre of Night will be playing numerous songs from their second album "The Dawn's Early Light" (with "Taps" kicking things off at 12:00 PM), and there'll also be a barbecue & silent auction to help benefit The Forgotten Eagles of Michigan, an organization that helps assist war veterans in the state. For Theatre of Night, this will be their first live set in the area that I can source, and if so, I believe it will be the first public concert that Craig Harrison & the Giles brothers have played together since I.S.O.M.'s 2009 breakup! Note that the songs being performed are all instrumentals, so I wouldn't expect singer Gaby Koss (who lives in Germany anyway) to be featured. There's no admission price or posted age limits for this benefit event, and everything starts at noon tomorrow. Check the above links for more details!

It's great to see Theatre of Night playing a live local concert finally, and given their proud American heritage and recent material, it's awesome to see them paying tribute to those lost protecting their freedoms! Hopefully this is just the first of many live concerts for them, and if you can make it down to The Corner Pub tomorrow, donate generously and rock out for a great cause! For a preview of tomorrow's event, here's one of Theatre of Night's promo videos for their American/patriotic themed album "The Dawn's Early Light", which you'll hear songs from tomorrow afternoon!

Next up, here's the latest from Dafter, Michigan solo artist Ken "SweetKenny" Sutton! First, he's revealed a tentative release date of June 30th for his sixth original studio album "Perception" (album cover pictured), and he plans to upload songs from it soon as a preview. No word yet on the full direction or length of it, but the most recent song posting on his Reverbnation page ("Magic Girl") mixes a hard rock groove and spoken word verses, so if it's on the album, it might be heavier-leaning! Now, if it comes out as expected this summer, we won't review it on the site until September at the earliest, as it'll be too soon from our review of his last album "Doo Hickey" in March, but it'll come if it does get released! As well, Ken put the call out for musicians in the Upper Peninsula to join a band on May 13th, presumably featuring him, though no word on if this will be an extension of his solo work or something completely new. This could be very interesting, so message him at sweetkenny@sweetkenny.com if you're interested, and stay tuned for more from SweetKenny!

Also today, Haggith drummer/local solo musician Mike Haggith has completed his YouTube channel transfer by posting four more back albums of his onto his new YouTube channel! His old "Sid Fucktard" channel has been deleted, along with some older audio tracks (he cited only bringing "relevant" material over), though I believe anything that didn't come over was posted before he moved to Sault Ontario, so nothing too familiar to local fans is gone. The new channel now has full uploads of 7 of his last 10 solo studio releases (only "Ace" and the not-previously-uploaded "For My Fallen Angel" & "The Best of Mike Haggith: Volume 2" aren't featured), though in at least one case ("The Curse Was The Cure"), the track listing is altered as an effective "re-issue". Among the postings were a couple of demo tracks that weren't released in this form on his albums, including a 2010 studio demo of "In A World" from his solo/The Thorns album "Laps In A Lake Of Fire", and a 2011 instrumental demo of "The Day The Lights Went Out" from "Neighbourhood Watch"!

Both are clearly unfinished, and "In A World" has some messier elements, but there's good stuff in each, so check out the instrumental take of "The Day The Lights Went Out" below, and stay tuned for more from Mike, the Haggith band, and The Din as I hear it!



Finally for today, here's three more assorted recent news items, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

• Local all ages concert promoter/Algoma drummer Jamie Vincent appears to have secured a show for Vancouver drone metal project Ahna on June 27th, as per a posting on his promotion agency's Facebook group two weeks ago, but full details and confirmation of the show have yet to come out. It's great to see Ahna finally get a local booking, and stay tuned for updates!
• I've updated our GarageBand Profile on T H E I D to further emphasize the now-inactive status of drummer Matt Hicks' more prominent later band Dirty Virgin, who have not made any public updates since last spring. Hopefully we see him back at it with Riverin or another project soon though!
• I've also updated our Defunct Local Band Profile on Faithless Sin to reflect frontman Jason Bourcier's recent addition to Winkstinger's lineup, as the profile was posted before Winkstinger publically confirmed that he had joined on bass. Not a major edit, but it makes the information more current, so I thought I'd acknowledge it, and don't miss Winkstinger's return on Wednesday night!

Defunct Local Band Profile Series: Cherubic Red & Faithless Sin

It's the 10th of the month, so it's now time for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! As usual, this monthly feature series looks at 1-2 local metal/hard rock bands that have either broken up or fallen inactive, in order to profile their history, material, and major events for current readers, and as the first band we picked this month had no available media, I picked another band to fill out this double post! Today, we have a band each from both sides of the border, and though neither lasted a long time, they have their own distinct info to share, so read on below for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles! Cherubic Red

Genre: Experimental/Industrial Rock

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Info/Analysis: Originally named Cash Only, Cherubic Red were a short lived industrial hard rock project that was active in the Sault Michigan area from roughly August 2009 until February 2010. Describing their sound as "rhythmic destruction", along with crediting numerous influences, old blog postings on their MySpace page from late 2009 indicated plans to release a single named "An Deinem Herzen" (German for "In Your Heart"), though the band went inactive before any media could be posted. They also had a close relationship with defunct local grunge band Half Stupid (who Steven Dahlke once promoted shows featuring), but little else is known on Cherubic Red that I can find. The influences and postings seem promising for a more unique local hard rock project, and hopefully we'll hear some of what Steven & Nick were working on at some point down the road!

Info/Analysis: Primarily active from 2006-2007, Faithless Sin were visible and busy during their initial run, including releasing their song "Chaos Reigns", but major activity died down after the departure of guitarist Mike DiPasquale in September 2006, and updates ended the following spring. Plans to relaunch the band with a new name & sound led to the creation of a separate new band named Time of Ruin (featuring Jason, Mike, and Mark from Faithless Sin), who were active from 2007-2008. Most of Faithless Sin's original lineup relaunched the band after a three year hiatus in August 2010, but their reunion was short lived, and they disbanded for good that fall. Personally, I'd say that Time of Ruin should be looked back on & remembered first given that they did more (and actually played concerts), but at least Faithless Sin had posted media! "Chaos Reigns" is a solid extreme metal track with nice guitar work and an intense feeling, but the recording quality isn't very good. Still, if you liked Time of Ruin or the other local bands that Jason fronted, check out Faithless Sin's only posted original song below!

Assorted News And Updates!!

Here's one more post for the opening day of December before we have two posts tomorrow (One being our next "Where Are The New Albums?" post, the other with weekend concert previews), but first, I want to note that if you saw an event page for a concert on Saturday night at Feedback featuring Espanola metal band Fifth Column and locals View To A Kill, don't get your hopes up. The event page for the show was deleted yesterday, so it appears to be off now, but if I hear anything to the contrary, I'll let you guys know! Now, to the news and assorted videos of the day, starting with some updates to a concert later this month!

There's been a few changes to the Green Christmas Bash at Feedback near the end of the month, as confirmed at this new Facebook event page (the old one was deleted), starting with a date change, as the show will now take place on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas itself. A reason for the date change was not announced, but December 24th does fall on a Saturday this year, so that could be related. That said, the lineup for the concert has been confirmed, though not without a band change, as local metal quintet Sativa Rose have dropped out of this show. According to promoters, they're off because frontwoman Marisa Valois will be out of town with family when this show takes place. Disappointing, but hey, family calls! Replacing them on the bill is a new folk/acoustic trio named Ye Olde Mold Pickers, who I believe share at least one member with the local band The Night Owl Meme Makers. They're actually the listed headliners for this concert, with local classical/punk trio RedD Monkey, local metal quartet View To A Kill (yes, they were Andrew Angelic's new band from the original event page), and "the original crash band" Sykotyk Rampage opening the festivities in that order. Admission remains $2, it's still 19+, and it all starts at 10:00 PM on Christmas Eve. Check the above links for more details!

Sounds like an entertaining and diverse night of music, and hopefully the promoters will be sure to bring more Green Christmas shows to Feedback in future years! If you wanna enjoy some live music over Christmas weekend, this show could very well do the trick! Stay tuned for updates!

Next up, if you're still uncertain on whether to buy Theatre of Night's remastered "Christmas Night" album (that we just reviewed yesterday), then this could be some incentive, as the band has uploaded their version of the Christmas classic "Carol of the Bells" onto their new YouTube channel! They launched the channel on Tuesday, but this song was only just posted yesterday. The video features various shots of the album artwork, band members, and other monochromed Christmas-relevant photos, with only minimal colour use. Decent effects, and they fit with the mood of the song, so if you want to get into the Christmas spirit and preview the full "Christmas Night" album, check out Theatre of Night's rendition of "Carol of the Bells" below!



Now, here's three assorted shorter stories from the last little while, and as always, these are in alphabetical order by band or artist name:

• Apparently, Wishbone bassist (and former Silver Dream drummer) Steven Flint filled in on drums for Sativa Rose at their concert on Tuesday when they opened for The Unbelievers, as Alex Palmer was absent. Hopefully things went well, Steven should have been a solid fill-in! If I hear anything new on Sativa Rose's new lineup, I'll have it here!
  
• I updated our GarageBand Profile of defunct local hard rock trio Sin Stereo to update the video references, specifically because the video of their successors Stiffler's Mom covering "Enjoy The Show" is now on YouTube. Not a huge change, but I thought I'd mention it!
• Russell Garwood of Zero Tolerance Magazine posted this Woods of Ypres article last month which features exclusive comments from frontman David Gold about the upcoming "Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light", including comments alluding to what this album would mean to the band's legacy if it ended up being their last album. I sure hope it's not, but it's an interesting read nonetheless, so click here to see what David has to say!

And finally, here's this week's classic video! With a relatively thin weekend for metal concerts (despite the return of Helix), I won't tie in this week's video with a performing band, so we'll dip into the archives for this week, and I've chosen a video from the recently-inactive local grunge trio No Arrow! We haven't heard much from them since their one-off show at what is now Feedback in February, but there's plenty of old videos and music of theirs online, including this video of them playing their original song "Delayed Reaction" when they opened for Montreal punk legends The Ripcordz at The Speak Easy on August 5th, 2007! At this performance, frontman Dann Pichette and drummer Joe Falco were joined by guest bassist Dean Scheepmaker (now of the Manitoba band The Aral Sea), and they definitely rocked on one of their heaviest songs here, though the audio quality is kinda scratchy and the first minute of the song wasn't captured. Dann's got some great screaming here too, helps make me miss No Arrow all the more!

New Videos From Skull After Betrayal & Mike Cliffe And More News!!

Hey guys, I know I promised the next "Where Are The New Albums?" post today, and that's still on, but it's coming later tonight so I can secure some possible added info on one of the three new additions to the post for this month. So in the meantime, here's a new news post featuring some new videos, a local band breakup with a metal relevance, and a new page for an area concert venue! Let's get this post started!

Skull After Betrayal frontman Mike Vincent has launched his own YouTube channel that now features two jam videos of new original songs! If you've been hoping for some new footage of these guys, then these should work nicely, especially compared to the awful quality audio tracks that are on their MySpace page. These videos feature the band's current lineup (no new singer yet), and regardless, there's no singing from either Mike or Adam Brett, who does backing vocals. Even still, you can hear their sound in these videos transitioning more into hardcore than the death metal sound they employed at their first couple of shows. The songs do sound promising, and with a move away from death metal, it will probably help Skull After Betrayal make a more unique local impression! Adam's bass work still needs improvement though, he's only plucking one string for most of the two posted songs. Also for new videos, local solo guitarist Mike Cliffe has posted three new videos onto his YouTube channel that feature new visualizations for three of his newer songs! One is for "Spring Storms", which features some cool rain and sand effects that suit the song, while "Salsa On My Shoes" gets a spacey visualization like you might see on Windows Media Player. Not bad, though if you're seeking heaviness, these songs won't be among the Mike Cliffe songs you'd go for. I'll embed his video for "Wedding Dress/Handsome Boy" here because it's the "rockingest" of the three songs, and it has the coolest video. It was taken from a DVD series called "Animusic" featuring a lot of futurist technological instrument stuff that looks cool, even if it's not synched to the song! Good stuff, nice to hear a well played Frank Zappa cover! Check it out below!



Thirdly today, I wanted to apologize for missing a pair of concerts last weekend. Apparently, Sault Michigan hard rockers River Witch played at The Cozy Corners Tavern & Grill in nearby Barbeau, Michigan last Friday and Saturday. I apologize for missing them, but in all fairness, River Witch didn't promote these shows on their page in any fashion. I hadn't looked there recently because they don't update it often (their last update was in April), but the venue actually did! Cozy Corners now have an internet presence thanks to an official website and a Facebook page that was launched in February! They describe everything well in terms of menu, events, specials, and so forth, and their Facebook page is frequently updated as well! And yes, they do have a history of occasionally booking concerts, it's not just for this past weekend. You may remember that Nixxon Dixxon played there a bit during their heyday, and the calendar on their website lists concerts through the summer that I will elaborate on in our next complete news post! Nice to see Cozy Corners with an online presence, definitely check the pages out, and if you wanna head to Barbeau for some good food, drinks, and music, it's not a far drive!

Oh, and I added Cozy Corners, Dan's Place in Rudyard, and the Facebook page for The Bird to our Sault Michigan concert venue listings, so check them out on your right!

And finally, I wanted to make reference to a band breakup that, though not metal related on the surface, does have a metal connection. On Tuesday, local rock trio Stiffler's Mom announced their amicable breakup after 13 years together. No reason was given, but they didn't close the door on future reunion concerts. Why mention this on the SMS though? Because, if you remember correctly, Stiffler's Mom were once the local metal trio Sin Stereo! In one way or another, Greg Simpson, Michael Davies, and Jon Ferguson have played together since 1997, though their Sin Stereo existence seemed to wrap up by 2006. Locally, they were best known as Stiffler's Mom, and they had numerous high profile concerts from the late 1990s through this spring, including backing up INXS at The Essar Center! Though Stiffler's Mom did have more of a "party rock" style that suited bar weekends really well, their Sin Stereo originals were a frequent sight, as you may have heard at the Kiss Battle of the Bands. Hell, I remember seeing them play live at a dance event at Bawating way back in 2004, and I enjoyed them then too! It'll be odd not seeing Stiffler's Mom around locally, but the memories remain, and you can still check out Sin Stereo's old profile from our GarageBand Profile Mini-Series last year at this location!

News From Mike Haggith, Woods Of Ypres, As It Stands, And More!!

Happy Boxing Day, everyone! Hopefully your Christmas was awesome, and hopefully you guys got lots of stuff! If you guys were expecting an official announcement on the New Years Eve metal show at Foggy Notions, then you might have to wait a bit, as official word hasn't been given beyond the promoter's personal Facebook page. Plus, the lineup might still need adjusting too. Something's gotta come soon though, so keep an eye out! For today, we have assorted news from the last little while, so here's what you need to know! Oh, and previews of concerts taking place tomorrow through Wednesday are coming TONIGHT!

We'll start with local solo artist Mike Haggith, who announced on his Facebook page on Thursday that he has postponed the release of his next album "Suspended Animation" due to the music lacking a certain "drive". He also announced that the album's track listing will be greatly altered to remove songs that aren't up to his standards, and to add new ones. What this will mean for some of the instrumental takes posted on his Reverbnation page isn't known yet, but stay tuned for updates on the new release info! With that said, Mike has uploaded three full songs from "Suspended Animation" with vocals onto Reverbnation, those being "Sun Perfume", "The Institution", and a new addition to the setlist, "Trinity". I won't go into heavy detail with my opinions on them, as I still hope to review this album down the road, but I will say that the vocals complete each track! Of course, there's a lot of Mike Haggith solo material that's came out recently too if you're getting anxious, and it's now supplanted by the addition of his "Live At The Outback" album onto his ReverbNation store!

It features only three of the announced tracks, with "Tuning" unavailable. Odd, but really, would you count guitar tuning as a "song"? The three posted tracks from the album go for 99¢ each, or $3.25 as a whole, with ringtones going for $2.49. If you wanna buy Mike's first ever solo live album, click here! Video uploads of two of the live tracks can be checked out at this location as well! I'm still leaning towards a review of "Laps In A Lake Of Fire" over "Live At The Outback" if I do review a Mike Haggith album next month, unless the "Suspended Animation" delay isn't that long. Time will tell though, as there many announced local metal albums that we're waiting for, so I couldn't guess what we'll review next at all! Next up, here are the latest news items from Woods of Ypres, now back in action following frontman David Gold's return to Canada! On Thursday, he announced a rough timeline of upcoming band events on Woods of Ypres' Facebook page, starting with writing, rehearsals, and DVD editing in January and February! That's all good to hear, especially the unexpected news about a DVD! That'll be interesting, I wonder what we'll get in that? Then, it's mentioned that "Woods IV: The Green Album" will be reissued worldwide through their new label Earache Records, with a warm-up Canadian tour planned as well. David mentioned the Earache reissue news on his Governor's Ball interview, and it's nice to see the album get wider press! Looks like "Woods V" will be pushed back as a result, but it'll be worth it when it comes out! And as for the warm-up Canadian tour? Fingers crossed they play a show here! David also added that the band hope to write and rehearse more in April, followed by the beginning of full time touring "everywhere" in May. Awesome news, hopefully this plan sticks without delay! One more quick Woods of Ypres note: Their first merchandise item on Earache Records' store is now on sale! It's a $5 Woods of Ypres patch, pick it up today at this location! Stay tuned for more Woods of Ypres news as I hear it!

Thirdly today, here's the latest news from local hardcore quintet As It Stands! Firstly, if you've been wondering why we haven't heard anything lately concerning their show tomorrow at The Speak Easy, here's why. The band deleted the Facebook event page, alluding to a likely cancellation for the show. That's a shame, it'd have been fun! They have been keeping busy booking some Southern Ontario shows for next month though, including a new show in Ottawa on January 29th with hardcore band After the Vendetta, and more news on their January 28th concert in Windsor with The Voodoo Mafia. It's amazing how quickly they've been able to secure out of town shows after their return, that's a very good sign! They also announced that their original material (presumably their two newest originals) are now on rotation at Energy Rock Radio, which is awesome! It'd be nice to hear their original EP on there too (If you have a copy or the songs from it, let me know!) Get full details on the above stories at their official Facebook page! The future's looking very bright for As It Stands, I'll keep you posted with more news as I hear it! And of course, make sure to see them on Tuesday at the Soo Music Mash-Up show at The Oddfellows Hall!

Fourthly, three local metal bands have launched brand new Facebook pages! One is the new Facebook page for local hard rockers Stillbroke, which is (more or less) their first updated news or information on an official band page in quite a long time. The new page is pretty sparse at present, but it does confirm the band's current lineup (including new bassist Mitch Sirie), so it's worth becoming a fan of to stay in the loop! Speaking of bands featuring Mitch Sirie, his death metal band The Bear Hunters also have a new official Facebook page as well! It includes the band's lineup, a logo, and lots of amusing anti-bear statements! Good stuff so far, remember to check them out on New Years Eve, once I find out more info! And the final new Facebook page is courtesy of new local death metal quartet State of Misery! Nice to see a page from them that anyone can join and become a fan of! It confirms their lineup and also includes influences, an "odd" biography statement, and mentions that page updates and news are coming "soon". Good to hear! I'm a fan of all three pages, and if you guys want to keep updated, I'd say you all should too!

And finally, just some news on three link deletions from the SMS. I deleted two bands from our listings, those being defunct local solo project Recognition and Sin Stereo, who are now better known as Stiffler's Mom. I left them on the SMS following the shutdown of their only internet pages on GarageBand because it looked like they were on iLike with their songs posted there. On recent link checking, I found that their iLike "pages" were neither official nor featured any real audio or band material. It's nice to see iLike add them to their server, but they're certainly not real band pages, so I finally deleted them from our listings. I also edited both bands' entries in our GarageBand Profile Mini-Series (linked above) to reflect the reality of their internet page situation, with media links on both now taking you to my YouTube uploads of the songs on the SMS' YouTube channel. The other deletion was for the old website for Hempfest, which has long since changed owners and isn't directly run by people connected with Planetary Pride anymore, as the old site was hosted through there.
