Defunct Local Band Profile Series: T-Rex Manning

It's the 10th once again, so here's this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! This recurring feature series spotlights one or two randomly selected local metal, hard rock, or punk bands that are no longer a functionally active group, but deserve a modern spotlight for current readers to look back on their run and current whereabouts with! This month's choice features a number of performers still seen frequently on the local stage in related bands, so let's have one more Rex Manning Day with this month's profile!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T-Rex Manning

Genre: Punk/Metal

Hometown: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Members: (Members not in their last full lineup in italics. Note that then-Jack Spades drummer Johnny Belanger was often seen as a fill-in drummer for T-Rex Manning in their final months, but he was never publically advertised as a full band member. As well, the band's original lineup sans J.D. performed as Pools of Booze infrequently in 2012, but they're not considered to be the same band.)

J.D. "Johnny Pints" Pearce (Jack Spades, Fitswitch, Frightlight), vocals
Tiffany Stocco (Stegadeth, Jack Spades, Pools of Booze), guitar
Bill "Orthae" Bennett (Stegadeth, Stereo North, Pools of Booze), bass
Rick White (Redundant, Fitswitch, Frightlight), drums
Daniel MacDonald (Stegadeth, Pools of Booze), drums

Audio/Video: Primarily a band to play covers-only sets (with one exception), T-Rex Manning weren't known for studio work, but they have a fair amount of live videos online, with our YouTube channel being a great source for videos from the peak of their local run, though footage is minimal on other public sources. Here's their sole original song, "She Banged The Mayor", as played during their original lineup's final concert together in November 2012!

Info/Analysis: A side project from frontman J.D. Pearce's then-active band Frightlight, and partially named after a character from the movie Empire Records, T-Rex Manning debuted in November 2011 when they opened for The Unbelievers at The Roosevelt Hotel, and soon became a fan favourite sight at local concerts with a wide ranging set of punk & metal covers. Fans may recognize them for winning "Best Sound" at 2012's Humane Society Battle of the Bands, opening for acts like The Ripcordz, The Saigon Hookers, and Skull Fist, and their one-off turn as "The Fiend Brigade"at March 2013's Apocalypse: The Musical tribute show event, among others. J.D. & Tiffany's 2013-launched punk/metal band Jack Spades co-existed with T-Rex Manning until that band quietly dissolved following their February 2014 appearance at The Rosie's final Heavy Thursday concert, with a planned one-off reunion at J.D.'s annual Halloween party the next year not taking place.

T-Rex Manning were a fun attraction during their 2½ year run of shows, and with a set featuring everyone from The Ramones & The Misfits to Judas Priest & The Bloodhound Gang, how could you go too wrong? Also, T-Rex Manning was notable as J.D. & Rick's final full band collaboration to date after he replaced Daniel on drums. Though not as polished & original-focused as J.D. & Tiffany's prior and later bands, you could always count for a good time on Rex Manning Day, but don't miss the instrumentalists from their first lineup with their current band Stegadeth (who still play "She Banged The Mayor"), or J.D. with Jack Spades!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you guys liked this month's Defunct Local Band Profile! Next month in this series, we'll stay in Sault Ontario for another band featuring Fitswitch alumni, as our next randomly selected band is The Scary Uncles, the late 2000s punk band that begat Redundant! Look for that profile on or around August 10th, and stay tuned for more news this week! Thanks everyone!

New Videos From (Mike) Haggith, An Inactive Band, And More!!

First off, I want to apologize for not getting a proper plug/preview of Saturday night's Mourning Wood concert at Reggie's West on the site, as the band didn't confirm it on their own Facebook page, and it's personal Facebook page announcements by band members weren't timely for us to add them to a post. Don't miss them this coming Thursday for the Rednecks jam night though! Now, today's news post features new videos from two linked projects, a local band that we're moving to our inactive links, and more, so here's what you should know!

We'll start with new videos from local grunge/hard rock quartet Haggith, though this time, not YouTube uploads of original studio recordings. Since the recent return of Caleb Cachagee on guitar, the guys have posted two new videos to their Facebook page, including this video of the guys hanging out watching a King Crimson DVD, making soup, and freely talking about anything that comes to mind in the process. Light but amusing, so give it a look to see the new lineup, who definitely seem to be in great spirits! Note however that there is some swearing present. The other new video is musical in nature, as it features drummer Mike Haggith playing along with the studio track for their original "Road Rash" (from their upcoming EP "XIV") in order to try out the band's new studio simulator. Nice energetic performance, so give it a look below, and stay tuned for more from Haggith!

Next up, we have a band to move to our inactive band links on the site, that being local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning. While the band has never publically confirmed anything regarding their status, they haven't played a public concert since the last Heavy Thursday at The Roosevelt Hotel last February, while every member of the band has since been focusing on other projects (J.D. Pearce & Tiffany Stocco with Jack Spades, Rick White with Redundant, and Bill Bennett with Stereo North), and it could be argued that Jack Spades have replaced T-Rex Manning given the common members and similar sound. Active since the fall of 2011, T-Rex Manning's punk and metal covers were a familiar sight at local concerts for over two years, wherein they opened for the likes of The Ripcordz, The Saigon Hookers, and Diemonds, along with winning "Best Sound" at 2012's Humane Society Battle, while unleashing their fan favourite original "She Banged The Mayor" in the process.

T-Rex Manning were a fun band that delivered lots of entertaining concert sets in the early 2010s, and while Jack Spades deliver a more original-oriented take on their sound, hopefully we'll find Rex Manning Day on our calendars again down the road! Best of luck to J.D., Tiffany, Bill, Rick, and Daniel in the future!

Also today, here's another new studio original song from the aforementioned Mike Haggith's solo project! To be included in his upcoming album "The Warinside", this newest song (posted on his YouTube channel on Wednesday) is titled "Candy Is A Hooker's Name", which Mike said was both "comedic and personal" on his solo Facebook page last week. We won't review the song here, as we're waiting for our full review of this album to come upon it's release, but give Mike's new solo track a listen below, and hear more above!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter items from the last few days, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by artist name:

  • Recording for Jack Spades' chunk of their upcoming three-way split album with Destroilet and Montreal's The Ripcordz will apparently begin tomorrow! Our source is the band's Facebook page, where they also revealed plans for a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the release that would see "wicked rewards" for people who pitch in. We'll keep you posted when more is announced!
  • Ye Olde Mold Pickers frontwoman Rihkee Strap is reportedly interested in singing in a local doom metal band this summer when she moves back to the Soo, which she mentioned came from a recent vision that she had. A female fronted doom band would be intriguing on it's own, but if you're interested in more details, message Rihkee at this link or via her Musicians Wanted Facebook group post from yesterday!
  • As previously mentioned in our latest "Where Are The New Albums?" post, local goregrind duo Rotopsy recently posted a new song onto their Bandcamp page towards their next demo, but I won't give the 24 word long title here due to potentially offensive content. Featuring a groove metal sound with spoken word vocals, it continues their recent evolution, so give it a listen if you want!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more in the coming days! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Nudge & Griphook) And The First Of This Weekend's Concert Previews!!

We have another busy concert weekend on the horizon, so I've been forced to break this weekend's hard rock/metal show previews up into two posts. We'll tackle late notice announcements, tomorrow's Heavy Thursday, and one Friday nighter below, and we'll get to the rest of the Friday-Saturday shows tomorrow, so if it's not addressed here and it's heavy, it's coming! Let's start our first of the weekend previews with some SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS!!

Marquette hard rock favourites Nudge will make their first local concert appearances of 2014 TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT when they return to The Satisfied Frog in Sault Michigan! Apologies for the short notice, I only just heard about these shows on Tuesday. Last seen there over 4 months ago, it's awesome to see the guys back in the Eastern U.P. for another weekend of hard hitting covers, so definitely keep these shows in mind for this weekend! Note as well that this weekend's shows will feature returning drummer Eric Schlumpf (who replaced Scott Kusmirek earlier this year), while frontman Danzo McCracken's Thursday solo acoustic set returns TONIGHT to The Frog as well, which should be fun if you're up for a softer night of music! Nudge's return shows this weekend have 10:00 PM start times, 21+ age limits, and no announced cover charge, so click here for more details, don't miss Nudge's first 2014 local stops THIS WEEKEND, and for a preview, here's the guys covering Ugly Kid Joe in Gwinn!

Also in new concert announcements, Sault Ontario classic/hard rock quartet Griphook will return to The Roosevelt Hotel for two shows TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT as well! Apologies for the short notice, these gigs were only just announced on Tuesday. To be Griphook's second concert weekend with new singer/guitarist Joel Syrette (ex-100 Gran) following his addition to the band in December, it's nice to see this talented veteran band back at it after an almost 2 month break, and hopefully there's a solid crowd both nights at The Rosie this weekend for their diverse and often heavy covers! Admission should be free this weekend, you must be 19 to attend, and there is a 10:30 PM start time in effect. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Sounds like a good time this weekend, so if you've missed Griphook in recent weeks, be at The Rosie tomorrow or Saturday! For a preview, here's the band last year covering AC/DC!

Moving to previously announced concerts, the third installment of the new Heavy Thursday series at The Roosevelt Hotel goes down TONIGHT, and after a week off to focus on promoter J.D. Pearce's Late & Loud reunion show on Friday, things are back in full force with a punk-themed night of action that will see local guitarist/drummer Rick White play in all three bands in his first show at The Rosie since August! Metal fans will get their fix with the return of metal/punk cover quartet T-Rex Manning in their first live date of 2014 (and first with Rick on drums since May), and their fun and explosive sound should be welcomed back to the stage tonight, so don't miss them! The other bands include resurgent local punk trio Redundant (4 time veterans of the original Rosie metal night series) in their first Rosie stop since last summer, while Rick's new old school punk quartet Fist Fighting Stephen Hawking will make just their second live appearance tonight, and with a lineup also including punk veterans Jeff De Rose, Clint Wilson, and Ryan McLaughlin, there should be a lot of good things to come from them!

A $5 cover charge is in effect for this 19+ concert, and everything starts at 10:00 PM TONIGHT, so for more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Sounds like a fun night of live music for you punk fans, and with a dash of metal to boot, so don't miss the third Heavy Thursday TONIGHT, kudos to Rick for this triple threat event, and for a preview, here's T-Rex Manning (as "The Fiend Brigade") covering The Misfits last year!

Finally for today's previews, Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will continue his weekly concert arrangement at The Harp Pub & Grill for a lucky thirteenth installment TOMORROW NIGHT! Now back in his usual Friday night placement for a second straight week, this currently sits as Tym's last scheduled night of his current acoustic show/jam night run at the former Madison's Pub, but he tends to announce shows on his website's calendar a month at a time, so I would expect announcements of his 14th-17th dates in March for this arrangement in the near future. Whether you're a fan of Tym's prolific covers or a prospective jam night performer, everything should start at 10:00 PM tomorrow, you must be 19 to attend, and there's no announced cover charge. For more details, visit the above links! This should be another entertaining night of talented and proficient covers from this noted hard rock favourite, so keep it in mind for your Friday night plans, and here's Tym covering Metallica live at Bossy's!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for this month's CD review either today or tomorrow, and the rest of this weekend's metal/hard rock concert previews tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (T-Rex Manning), Jack Spades EP News, And More!!

Congratulations go out to the Canadian men's hockey team on winning gold this morning (and for our Yooper readers, the Americans put up a great game in the semifinals!) Today's second post features a new cover video, the latest from a returned local metal band, and some overdue notes on an upcoming CD release, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for later this week (and check out this month's YouTube Channel Profile in the post below this one!)

The next Heavy Thursday at The Roosevelt Hotel will indeed have a metal-featured band, as local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning have been added to THIS THURSDAY'S lineup! This will be the band's first live appearance of 2014, and it will also mark their first show with drummer Rick White since May of last year (he missed their two late 2013 dates during his injury recovery), so it's awesome to see the full lineup back together finally for the third Heavy Thursday! In fact, Rick will be pulling triple duty on Thursday, as his local punk bands Redundant and Fist Fighting Stephen Hawking will also be playing this show, so fans of Rick and his music will definitely not want to miss this show! This will be Redundant's first Rosie appearance in 6 months, while Fist Fighting Stephen Hawking (featuring Rick on guitar alongside alumni of Frightlight, Northwest, and As It Stands) will be playing their second ever live show following their debut at the Bon Soo Marquee

Admission will be $5 on Thursday night, you must be 19 to attend, and a 10:00 PM start time is expected. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Very solid lineup, and while Rick will be busy in his Rosie return, I know he'll handle everything nicely despite the workload, so keep the third Heavy Thursday in mind for later this week!

Next up, we have some long overdue updates concerning T-Rex Manning members J.D. Pearce & Tiffany Stocco's other punk/metal band Jack Spades, as they've began work on their debut EP! According to their Facebook page, they've been working on it since at least last Monday (when guitarist Jesse Cook & drummer Johnny Belanger completed tracking), with Tiffany recording guitar parts last Thursday, bassist Justin Lam finishing bass parts today, and J.D. waiting until instrument tracking is finished before recording vocals (Johnny & Tiffany will handle backing vocals then too.) Indications point to the EP having 5 original songs, but details on the name, artwork, formats, release date, and such are not out yet. The EP news seemed to come out of nowhere unless you're close to the band, but I'm very curious to hear what's in store for this one! If The Bear Hunters' album finally comes out this year too, it'll prove to be a huge year for Justin and Johnny musically, so fingers crossed everything works out, and stay tuned for updates as they roll in!

Also today, here's the latest from Sault Ontario "derd rock" project The Issues, who recently came back from a 9 month public hiatus! On the lineup side of things, the band has quietly parted ways with singer Velvit Bretfield and guitarist Robbie Rockit (a.k.a. Pillory's Bret Shuttleworth & Robert Sartini) for unannounced reasons, as per their removal from their Facebook page's lineup. Disappointing news, especially with no media to show from their tenure, but hopefully things were amicable, as drummer Mullet Studborne did a solid job producing Pillory's EP! However, the band's remaining members (including bassist Vinyl Muto) are back working on at least 3 new studio tracks as per their Facebook page on Friday, and to go along with it, the band uploaded four old tracks as Facebook videos there as well! Three ("Dirty Baby", "Lambs to the Slaughter", and "That's When She Calls") are re-posts of songs from their MySpace page, but one named "In The Past" is new to either page.

The songs are all very different, with "Dirty Baby" having a punk feel, "Lambs to the Slaughter" benefiting from then-singer (and Winkstinger frontman) Alan "Power" Wells, and "That's When She Calls" having more of a folksy laid back sound (featuring ex-guitarist "Leather Luc", who I believe is Bankshot alum Lucas Schmiedendorf.) I've always enjoyed The Issues and their sense of humour, and I'd like to see them finally get a full lineup and play some real live dates, so hopefully the recent news helps with that! Check out their old/new hard rocker "In The Past" (featuring late founding guitarist Andres "Denim" Duchesne) below!

Finally for today, we have another solo cover video from Ashes To Dust guitarist Alex Hemy's YouTube channel, this time a cover of Passenger's "Let Her Go"! Uploaded last Monday, this returns to his recent trend of softer rock covers, but I like his continually improving skills at multiple instruments and at video editing (including a greater use of panning and zooming!) I'm not familiar with Passenger, but he does a good job for this style of song, so give Alex's newest solo cover a look below!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news tomorrow as we clear out our news cache! Thanks everyone!

SweetKenny's New Album, New Solo Guitar Videos, And More!!

Before we post my review of last night's show at The Canadian Nightclub, we have a new news post on this Sunday morning! Today, we have assorted shorter recent news items, and a bunch of stories relating to local solo guitarists, including two new video uploads and a long awaited CD release, so here's what you need to know!

Dafter, Michigan solo hard rock musician Ken "SweetKenny" Sutton's new album "Cracks In The Wall" is finally on sale! After being delayed twice from the originally planned Halloween release date, his seventh original CD (and third of 2013) finally came out on Friday, and you can now buy it on CDBaby! The album goes for $12.97 on CD, $9.99 on mp3, or for 99¢ for each track individually, so check the above links to pick it up, or stream it for free at this location! Described as a "heavy rock blues style feel album", "Cracks In The Wall" (which was recorded this year at Waterfall Records) has just 6 songs, giving it the same EP length as "Doo Hickey" from earlier this year, but unlike it's preceding 2013 releases, the new CD is all instrumental with no credited guest performers. I got a good vibe from this CD on a first listen, so fans of SweetKenny's past work shouldn't be disappointed, but when is a formal review on the SMS coming?

As we just reviewed the slightly heavier & longer "Perception" earlier this month, a review of "Cracks In The Wall" won't happen until May 2014 at the earliest, as we don't review albums by the same band twice in a 6 month period out of fairness to other bands. Check it out though at the above links, as Ken's prolific and entertaining original material is well worth a listen!

Next up, here's a brand new video from prolific Sault Ontario experimental solo hard rock guitarist Mike Cliffe! Though he's kept busy with his AudioFumes podcast and many Reverbnation song postings in the interim, this is his first video posting on his YouTube channel in 7 months. Posted on Friday, this video is the result of crowd-sourced suggestions to build an original song, and he got some chords and time signatures for this improvised jazz rock instrumental, which he acknowledges and thanks AudioFumes listeners for suggesting and helping with in a 90 second introduction. The song itself is slow and has a neat atmosphere and essence, but it's very well performed and progressive (complete with some psychedelic visualizations laid on top), and fans of Mike's vast array of original material should like his newest video! Check it out below, and hear and see much more of his original music above!

Keeping with the theme of solo guitarists, Ashes To Dust's Alex Hemy posted a solo acoustic cover of Def Leppard's "Two Steps Behind" onto his YouTube channel on Saturday! I'm not a huge Def Leppard fan, but this is a well put together cover with nice layered backing vocals and camera angles, and Alex's singing voice fits the song & mood, so check out his newest solo cover track below!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from recent days, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

  • According to the new official poster for the event by Destroilet drummer Matt Waples, the Crued concert at The Rockstar Bar next Saturday will have $8 advance tickets (they jump to $10 at the door), with no announced opening bands. Get your tickets A.S.A.P. at The Algonquin Hotel to see this exciting Motley Crue tribute band!
  • Sault Ontario industrial metal project Riverin (featuring Dirty Virgin alumni Matt Hicks & Matt Clement) have had an official Twitter page since 2010, but we only just found it the other day! As of November 9th, they were working on new music and looking for label backing, so it's good to see the Matts staying active with this project, and here's hoping we hear more soon! Follow them at the above links!
  • Prolific local drummer Johnny Belanger filled in on drums for T-Rex Manning in place of Rick White at Thursday night's Diemonds-headlined concert at The Algonquin Pub, as per bassist Bill Bennett on the Facebook event page. A reason for Rick's absence hasn't been publicized, but he hasn't played a live concert since getting injured in that Roosevelt Hotel incident almost 3 months ago, so that may be related. Sounds like the show went well though, and it's nice to see 3/5ths of Jack Spades together as a result!

That's all for now, but stay tuned for my review of last night's Amy Ellis benefit show at The Canadian later today, hopefully before the Biipiigwan show! Thanks everyone!

Most Of This Weekend's Sault Ontario Metal/Hard Rock Concert Previews!!

We have quite a busy concert weekend coming up (abnormally such for November), so before we get into the first of our previews, here's a breakdown of our preview schedule. Today, we'll profile Sault Ontario metal/hard rock shows taking place between TONIGHT and Saturday, with tomorrow's post focused around Sault Michigan-area shows, and maybe Sunday night's Biipiigwan show in Sault Ontario, but if any late notice gigs come to my attention, we'll move the Biipiigwan preview to it's own Saturday post. With that said, let's begin tackling this stacked concert weekend!

We'll start our previews TONIGHT at The Algonquin Pub (or "The Zoo" if you prefer), as Toronto sleaze/hard rock quintet Diemonds will make their long awaited return to Sault Ontario for another headlining concert! Last seen at the old Coch's Corner in mid-2009 in a show we actually were late to hear about on the SMS, Diemonds have a fun party sound that should attract punk and hard rock fans in good measure with their female-fronted and often sleazy sound, so they should get a solid response tonight! The local openers include the long awaited return of local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning (replacing The Danger Cats), who will make their first local concert appearance in 6 months tonight, and it's good to see another Rex Manning Day on the local stage! Note that I can not confirm if drummer Rick White will be back on stage to play with the band tonight, but he is a confirmed attendee on the Facebook event page, so fingers crossed! The other local opening band is new local hard rock quartet Punch (fresh off their 3rd place Viva La Battle run), so don't be late for hard hitting originals & covers from this union of Haggith & Suicide Kings members!

The first Algonquin Pub concert from promoter/T-Rex Manning frontman J.D. Pearce in over 4 months, admission will be $5 for this 19+ concert, and there is a 10:00 PM start time. For more details, visit the above links! Diemonds and the locals should put in an awesome show full of hard rock intensity TONIGHT, so don't miss out if you can help it, and for a preview, here's Diemonds rocking a Toronto stage last month!

Moving to shows taking place TOMORROW NIGHT, local grunge/alternative rock quartet Haggith will play for the third & final time at The New American Pub, in what will be their last date before next month's farewell concert. Though their amicable finality is impending, this popular local band still have a lot of rocking to give tomorrow, and they have plenty of fun and aggressive originals (plus select covers) to bring to the stage, so if you're at The New A at 602 Bay Street tomorrow, just have a great time! A late notice opener has been secured, as prominent local hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings will finally return to the stage tomorrow in their New American debut for the first time since August's Airbourne concert! I don't know what led to their 3 month break from the stage (including dropping out of Viva La Battle), but I can confirm that their lineup has not changed, so Steven Flint & Ben Boudreau really are in 3 bands together now, including These Sins of Time & with half of Haggith in Punch.

It's great to have the two top bands from April's Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands back on stage together again one last time, so don't miss this hard rock explosion at The New A tomorrow night! A cover charge in the $4 range is likely, you must be 19 to attend, and everything starts at 9:00 PM. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! I wonder if the presence of Punch's entire lineup tomorrow will lead to a surprise appearance by them? No idea, but hopefully tomorrow's concert goes awesome, and it's still a bummer that Haggith are breaking up! For a preview, here's Haggith playing their/Punch's original "Metal Cage"!

Also TOMORROW, new classic/hard rock quartet Glitch will play their second ever live concert when they return to the site of their debut (The Rockstar Bar) for another solo headlining gig! The new band featuring Sneaky Pete, Lion Ride, and Tripod The Dog alumni made a good impression in their September debut with their varied (and often heavy) cover setlist, and after taking October off, you know this veteran outfit will be raring to go once again! A $5 cover charge (or something close) is likely, a 19+ age limit is to be expected, and everything starts at 10:30 PM tomorrow night. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! Glitch have a lot of talent and hard rock experience between them, so keep tomorrow's show in mind for a fun party experience, and if you can't make the show, hit them up at Toystock at The Canadian on December 1st! For a preview, here's Glitch covering a Rolling Stones song in their live debut in September!

Finally for today's previews, fellow local classic hard rockers (and Toystock performers) The Thrill Junkies will play their third concert weekend at The Roosevelt Hotel TOMORROW & SATURDAY NIGHT! This union of Turner Up, Havadder, Redundant, Carbon Black, and Full Circle alumni have been rocking local venues to good acclaim since their regional debut since September, and with their aresnal of classic, hard, and general rock covers, you won't want to miss out in their return to The Rosie this weekend! In fact, these shows are helping kick off The Rosie's return after  a 3 week closure period due to the agreement from that over-serving incident, so it's good to have this popular venue back as well! Admission should be free for this weekend's 10:30 PM shows, and you must be 19 to attend either night. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be another fun weekend from these talented local music veterans, so if you can't make Toystock, keep this weekend's Thrill Junkies shows in mind, and when we have videos or media from their live concerts, we'll have them here!

That's probably all for today, but stay tuned TOMORROW for our Sault Michigan previews, and a preview of either the Biipiigwan show on Sunday or a late notice show, plus our newest YouTube Channel Profile tomorrow night! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Tym Morrison), New Bear Hunters Videos, And Much More!!

I wasn't expecting to have a new post tonight, but we have a SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TONIGHT, so I've gotta rush one to make sure it gets some last minute promotion! That leads off tonight's post, but we also have new concert videos, lineup updates for an upcoming concert, and some more assorted news, so read on below for what you need to know, and check out our Thrill Junkies preview and much more in the post below this one!

Caveman Morrison frontman Tym Morrison will return to The Roadhouse Bar & Grill on Trunk Road TONIGHT! Apologies for the extremely short notice, Tym only just announced this show a few hours ago via this Facebook event page. Coming one week after his debut at The Harp, he returns to more familiar confines tonight for another evening of unplugged metal and hard rock renditions, and if you're up for some late notice hard rock action on this quiet concert weekend, you know where to be! There's no announced cover charge for tonight's show, you must be 19 to attend, and a 10:00 PM start time is advertised. For more details, check the above links! It's nice to see Tym back at The Roadhouse once again, even if word for the show is quite late, so keep this show in mind for some acoustic metal hits in the East End TONIGHT! For a preview, here's Tym and Half Past alum Luke LeBlanc (we're still pulling for you!) covering Extreme's "More Than Words" a few years ago!

Next up, here's two new videos from local melodic death metal quartet The Bear Hunters! Filmed during their headlining set at last month's Blood Shed Productions-promoted Oddfellows Hall show (and uploaded to their YouTube channel yesterday), they include videos of their new song "I Fear No God" ("I" accidentally omitted in the title) and, as embedded below, "Dominate", with their "Teddy Bear's Picnic" intro proceeding it! Likely filmed by guitarist Mitch Sirie's former Stillbroke bandmate Sam DeDominicis, he got some nice unique angles both on the stage, in the front row, and behind the crowd to capture many unique angles of The Bear Hunters in action, and the video and audio quality are both really good (quiet vocals aside!) Very floaty too, almost seamless how the camera moves around. Check out The Bear Hunters' newest videos above and below, and don't miss them at The Moose Lodge opening for Biipiigwan on the 24th!

Also today, here's the latest on the upcoming Diemonds-headlined concert at The Algonquin Pub on Thursday, November 21st! The announced opening band has changed, as all-female hard rock quartet The Danger Cats have apparently dropped out of the show, as per their removal from the Facebook event page. A reason for their withdrawal hasn't been publically announced, but I will note that the girls never officially confirmed this show on their own Facebook page, so that could be related. Disappointing, but we'll see them next opening at Haggith's last show at the same venue next month, so keep that in mind! Replacing them is the return of local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning, who we last saw headlining the Crusade cancer fundraiser at The Canadian 6 months ago! It's great to see them back after an abnormally long break, and hopefully their fun and energetic covers (and original) are welcomed back on the 21st! I will note that their drummer is Rick White, who was laid up in September with a broken eye socket after that incident at The Rosie, but I have no clue if he'll be behind the kit for this show or not. If I hear anything either way, I'll let you guys know!

Promoter/T-Rex Manning frontman J.D. Pearce is still looking for a second opening band, so if you're interested, check the above links for more details, and don't miss Diemonds' sleaze rock attack on the return of Rex Manning Day on the 21st! Stay tuned for updates!

Finally for today, here's three assorted shorter news stories from the last little while, and as usual, these are in alphabetical order by band name:

  • I've moved local/London metal band ApocalyptiCDistroyeR to our inactive Sault Ontario band links due to a year's inactivity. Their YouTube channel (ran by band leader Jesse Middaugh) last saw a music upload on Halloween 2012, with other pages last updated the year prior. Active since 2008, ApocalyptiCDistroyeR had a good prolific ambition & real guitar talent, and hopefully the Middaughs & company stay active in music!
  • Defunct local experimental metal band Project Legion's Facebook page (and only online page) has been deleted. A reason wasn't announced, but it's likely due to their breakup & the formation of their essential successors The Strange Coyotes. I'm firmly against deleting pages (if only for preservation's sake), but hopefully The Strange Coyotes find more success going forward!
  • According to it's Facebook event page, TONIGHT'S Thrill Junkies concert at Docks will be sans a band member, as they're "a man down", but will still be rocking it. The identity of the missing member wasn't given, but it's not Justin Langlois or Scott McLurg, as they were promoting the show on Facebook earlier today. Best of luck, and hopefully lots of ZZ Top fans stop by after that huge concert!

That's all for today, but stay tuned on Sunday for this month's Defunct Local Band Profiles, and for any other news as it rolls in! Thanks everyone!

The Crusade Review, Plus A Band's Surprise Debut, And A Concert Cancellation!!

Hey guys, it's time for my review of last night's cancer fundraising concert The Crusade, but first, we have a notable concert cancellation, as next week's Brains/Frightlight show has been cancelled. Promoter/opener J.D. "Johnny Pints" Pearce cited scheduling and routing for the cancellation on his promotion agency's Facebook group, but he hopes to bring The Brains back during their next tour run. This is definitely disappointing, especially as the show would have marked Frightlight's return after 7 months off of the stage, but we'll still see Redundant at The Oddfellows Hall next week, and hopefully horror punk and psychobilly fans will get a makeup date soon! However, J.D.'s most recent concert was last night, and it was announced that at least $300 was raised for local cancer charities at the event! (However, there were no vendor tables that I could tell, beyond Haggith's merchandise area.) The crowd was sort of sparse, but on a school night at the end of the holiday weekend, that may have been expected somewhat. Also to note, the lineup order was almost completely shuffled, with one band replacement, but we'll approach everything as we go, so here's my reviews and thoughts of each of last night's acts!

Opening last night's concert was returning local death metal quartet Crimson Crusade in their first live concert appearance in six months, and if there was some stage rust, it didn't really show! Their set included original songs like "Here We Lay", "Pillage", and "For Him" (among others), plus covers of Death's "Pull The Plug" and "Crystal Mountain", and like their last show, the Death influences were clear as day! Devon Lucier's vocal resemblance to Chuck Schuldiner is still impressive, and their full lineup had lots of talent and shining moments! Robert Sartini and Devon compliment each other well on guitar, Robert Crossley's drumming here is arguably better than it ever was with Inhuman Methods, and Riley Marshall's bass work was solid and fit their style throughout! Crimson Crusade have a lot of promise, and they don't sound like other local death metal bands, but they need momentum on their side to attract a bigger following (the planned EP and the Skeletonwitch show should help with that), and they could be a bit livelier on stage. I like where they're going though, and I can't wait to see what's next!

Next was former Terminal & Business Suit Trappers frontman Greg Callaghan in an acoustic solo set, and if you've seen his "evil" solo concerts before, you'll probably know what to expect. He played a mix of punk and rock covers, with his suitably deep vocals and clear guitar skill complimenting each song nicely (despite a mid-set broken string issue, I believe.) Covers included renditions of everything from Bad Religion and NOFX to Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen songs, and though the crowd wasn't crowding the floor, they did recognize and appreciate his talents! I still think he should front a full band locally again (perhaps with more of a punk base than Terminal had though), and his deep clean vocals would be a unique added element if he did, but his solo sets are fun for what they are, and hopefully his next one has a larger turnout!

Third on the bill was Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands winners The Suicide Kings in their first Canadian Nightclub appearance of the year, and the momentum from their recent successes propelled them through an entertaining mix of originals & covers! Songs including "Way Out of Hell" and their upcoming EP's title track "King of the World" were joined by System of a Down & Rage Against The Machine covers, plus the return of their assorted covers medley from the battle, and throughout, their talents and chemistry matched up nicely! Mike Gaetano's heavier singing is still a nice fit for their style, but it's not as consistent on softer & cleaner sections, so I tended to like their more aggressive tunes the best. It also says a lot when Steven Flint and Mitch Sirie can switch guitar and bass duties on some songs, and neither misses a beat in the process! I'd still like to see a bit more crowd engagement, but overall, The Suicide Kings are on a hot streak, and hopefully they keep it up as we creep into the summer!

The next band was a late replacement for local classic metal trio Caveman Morrison, who couldn't make the event for unannounced reasons. Disappointing, but I know we'll see them back on stage soon, and hopefully they'll turn up at The Canadian again at some point! However, drummer Johnny Belanger was on hand anyway, as their replacements were local melodic death metal quintet The Bear Hunters! Solid choice, and as they just played at The Rosie on Saturday, they weren't rusty or ill prepared to jump in, so fans didn't have to worry about them being off their game! Their set had no real surprises, with popular originals like "Dominate", "Karma", and "Succumb To Eternity" attracting some devoted fans & headbangers to the floor! Musically, the guys were all on form, and luckily, Mitch Sirie's guitar levels were higher than I'd seen at some recent gigs! Everyone put in a brutal set and were performing as well as I'd assume (maybe with less energy though), but just wait until they open for Skeletonwitch next month!

The penultimate full band last night was local grunge/alternative rockers Haggith in their Canadian Nightclub debut, and they may have made the biggest impression with their freewheeling, energetic, and fan-engaged set! Originals like "Clifton Hill" and "Rage Train" got their ardent fan base going, along with covers of Jimi Hendrix, Stone Temple Pilots, and "Heavy Metal" soundtrack songs, and the guys definitely seem a lot more relaxed and into the music than they did even last year! Curtis McKenzie's vocals were very strong, his and Daniel Horton's riffing and melodies flowed very well, and Mike Haggith was a wildman all night on drums! Also, the band was joined by backing vocalist Kristi-Lee Marshall throughout their set (as she was on much of their new album "Deuce"), and while she's very good in this role, she was often very hard to hear, and many songs featured her only minimally (if at all, a'la ex-Banned singer Mike Straw.) Haggith are definitely on the rise locally though, and if they keep on this pace, they'll be a must watch band soon!

The headliners (and only band to maintain their original setlist placement) was local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning, and they put in another fun set of covers (and one original) for the remaining fans! Their set was largely similar to past T-Rex Manning shows, with covers of The Misfits, The Bloodhound Gang, and The Ramones joining their original "She Banged The Mayor", among many others, and everyone seemed to be on form from past concerts! J.D. Pearce's vocals were as reliable as ever, and Bill Bennett's determined bass work was solid as usual, and even if there weren't a lot of new wrinkes, T-Rex Manning were solid and full of entertaining covers, as expected! I just wish the crowd was better. After their set, Bill and drummer Rick White ceded the stage to Bear Hunters bassist Justin Lam and Asylum Country drummer T.J. Case, as they, J.D., and Tiffany Stocco debuted their new band Jack Spades at the end of the night!

It was just for one song (a cover of Pennywise's "Fuck Authority"), but given the sound, lineup, and what I've heard from J.D., they will play heavier stuff too. I won't judge the band based on this one song preview (which did have some elements that needed work), but with a promising lineup and a high profile set coming when they open for The Dayglo Abortions in September, you won't wanna miss out!

Overall, this was a fun concert, though I bet it'd have drew a larger crowd and more funds raised if not held on a holiday. The bands were all firmly in support of beating cancer, and everyone delivered great sets of original and cover material, so all is good from this show! I got a bunch of photos of the bands (sans Jack Spades), so check them out at this location or at our Facebook page, and I did get videos of most of the bands (sans Greg Callaghan, his heavier covers I only identified when they were in progress.) In performance order, here's Crimson Crusade playing their song "Lost Memories", The Suicide Kings playing their newer original "Beaten Down" (I think that's the name), The Bear Hunters playing "Servitude", Haggith playing their new track "Anthem (I did film it this time, Mike!), T-Rex Manning covering Judas Priest's "Breaking The Law", and the debut Pennywise cover from Jack Spades!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for a major new concert announcement, and big news on a locally relevant tribute album's release, tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Pop Evil), The Crusade Preview, And New Skeyes Of Seven Videos!!

We're back with new news and updates on this Sunday morning, but what's now up on the site today? Along with some new videos from a recently prominent local band, we have a lot of hype for two events for cancer fundraising, one of which is a preview for a concert TOMORROW, and one of which is a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for the Sault Michigan area, so here's what you need to know!

The next major Dreammaker's Theater concert at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino from Allstar Promotions has been announced, and it will see the long awaited return of Pop Evil this summer! This popular Grand Rapids modern hard rock quintet will hit the Soo Kewadin for the first time in 3½ years when they headline a special all ages benefit concert there on August 14th, with all proceeds going to Team Jessica, a local fundraising campaign to support local high school student Jessica Jorgensen's battle with Acute Lympocytic Leukemia. Allstar Promotions owner Dave Atkinson is a firm supporter of the Team Jessica campaign, and his local graphics company Allstar Graphics has produced t-shirts for the cause as well, so it's great to see him helping Jessica through this major battle! The concert itself will have at least two other opening bands (whether any are local isn't publically known yet), and tickets will go on sale TOMORROW for just $20, and start times aren't announced yet. Check the above links for more details!

This sounds like a great event for an awesome cause, and it may call to mind the two Allstar-promoted Kim Rogers/Kelsey Raffaele benefit concerts (the first of which Pop Evil headlined), so if people can rally around Jessica at a similar level, this is bound to be a huge help with her leukemia battle! As for Pop Evil, they've been missed in recent years, but with their new album "Onyx" now out, and an exciting modern rock sound, you won't wanna miss their local return, so stay tuned for updates, and read on more on Team Jessica at this link!

Next up, here's a very special concert preview for TOMORROW, as local singer/concert promoter J.D. Pearce is holding a cancer fundraising event at The Canadian Nightclub named The Crusade! This is a cause that's very close to J.D., as his mom has beat cancer twice, and I'd assume most people have had it affect their lives, so it's great to see all proceeds from this event going to the Relay for Life and the The Canadian Cancer Society! Though early announcements implied a more varied lineup, five of the six bands tomorrow will be metal or hard rock-leaning, so who's scheduled? In descending order, the acts include J.D.'s own metal/punk band T-Rex Manning (in a rare headlining set) at 11:00 PM, ex-Terminal frontman Greg Callaghan's solo acoustic act at 10:00 PM, Rockstar Bar Battle winners The Suicide Kings at 9:00 PM, battle runner-ups Haggith at 8:00 PM, returning local death metal quartet Crimson Crusade at 7:00 PM, and the newest confirmation, local metal cover trio Caveman Morrison opening the festivities at 6:00 PM!

While most of tomorrow's bands have been seen recently, this will be Crimson Crusade's first show in six months, Haggith's Canadian Nightclub debut, and Caveman Morrison's first show at this venue since (I think) the Kiss Battle of the Bands in late 2009, so make note of them as well! This special concert is ALL AGES, with doors opening at 5:00 PM tomorrow, and admission is by donation ($5 recommended), with some sort of prize draws and vendor tables likely for added fundraising. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! There's a nice diverse lineup of acts tomorrow, from acoustic rock to punk to death metal, and these 20 musicians are all rocking out for a fantastic cause, so come on down to The Canadian tomorrow evening for The Crusade, and I will absolutely see you guys there! For a preview, here's T-Rex Manning (under their one-off Fiend Brigade moniker) covering a Misfits classic there in March!

Finally for today, local hard rock quintet Skeyes of Seven have uploaded a bunch of new videos onto their YouTube channel, all of which come from their second live concert at The Rockstar Bar last month! Joining their earlier upload of their original "Fallen Faith", the band posted six new videos (complete with titles) from the April 26th Garden of Bedlam show yesterday, including their originals "Destinations Unknown", "No One Cares", "Cognitive Dissonance", and "Anything At All", an their covers of Sense of Truth's "Crawling" and Breaking Benjamin's "So Cold", so click each link to check them out! Note that "Anything At All" is not another Sense of Truth cover, the same song name was just used by both bands. Also, I don't know yet if the filmer shot "Fallen Faith" (the earlier video was from a different camera) or their Slipknot, Stone Sour, and/or Tool covers. Shot at a high angle, it's not the clearest angle of the band, but the sound quality's solid, and it's good to hear these songs again!

I've embedded "Cognitive Dissonance" below, but check out more at the above links, and stay tuned for updates on this exciting alt-metal band's next shows and news!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news tomorrow, including some local band lineup additions! Thanks everyone!

The Ripcordz & Locals Concert Review!!

Hey guys, it's time for my review of last night's Ripcordz show, but also make sure to check out our all-Sault Michigan auto-post from this morning below this review! Last night was my second concert downstairs at The Algonquin Pub since they returned to metal & punk bookings, and the crowd was definitely much larger than at the Halloween weekend gig last year, but with The Ripcordz coming back, that was to be expected! Defintely one of the largest crowds I've encountered at an Algonquin Hotel venue, and by the end of the night, it was very packed!

Opening last night's festivities was local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning in their first show since November (their one off turn as The Fiend Brigade in February aside), and they put in another fun set of varied covers to kick off the show! Along with plenty of Misfits renditions, they also covered everything from Motorhead and Judas Priest to The Ramones and The Bloodhound Gang, with the Judas Priest cover serving as a makeup for frontman J.D. Pearce and drummer Rick White's botched attempt at "Breaking The Law" with a late-era Fitswitch lineup at the 2007 Ripcordz show. As I've come to expect from T-Rex Manning, the guys put in a solid effort, with talent all around, and Rick fits in nicely on drums, but the vocals were very quiet in the mix, especially Tiffany Stocco's backing work. I'd also love to see/hear some more original songs in T-Rex Manning's repertoire. "She Banged The Mayor" is right up there with Fitswitch & Frightlight's best originals to me, so why not build on that with some more? Hopefully it'll be T-Rex Manning Day again on the local stage soon!

Next up last night was the long awaited return of Destroilet, in their first live concert in over 2 years, but was their comeback worth the wait? I'd say so! Their set included every track from their new CD (except their cover of "Mile 58") and 7 additional covers, including everyone from Hank Williams III and The Descendents to The Dayglo Abortions and Gang Green, and it definitely didn't feel like they'd been away for so long! As an example, it's still hard as ever to get clear shots of them with how much they move and make use of the floor, but fans definitely ate it up! Musically, the guys were on form, with some very solid old school hardcore riffs from John Conway & Christian Foisy, and Mike Hull's hard-edged singing fit the material very well, but as the set went on, he voice did noticeably tire out and get quieter (though the backing vocals helped out a lot by then.) You can tell Destroilet's return was a success thanks to them securing the first moshpits of the night (and from Ripcordz frontman Paul Gott donning a Destroilet shirt for their set), and I can back up those sentiments thanks to their hardcore punk fury! Here's hoping we're not waiting until 2015 for their next show!

Headlining last night's show was Montreal hardcore punk legends The Ripcordz in their first local show since 2007, and I must have underestimated how heavy they are, as they tore through a blistering set of about 20 songs that definitely dipped into hardcore & metal territory often! Classics like "Your Mother Wears Army Boots", "Elvis Death Cult", and "You Are Not Alone" definitely got this raucus crowd going with some big pits and a great reception throughout! Musically, of J.D.'s recent major metal/punk headlining bands in town, The Ripcordz are right near the top for musical quality, with Paul Gott's voice & guitar work still holding up really well compared to the albums (if a bit deeper), while new bassist Matty Fortyfive proved more than up to the task during their set! Though somewhat to the point, the guys had a lot of energy and clear love for the local crowd, and a clear impression was made, as always! Overall, great set from The Ripcordz, and hopefully we won't be waiting another 5 years for their next local show!

Another winner of a concert, and if you missed it, you definitely missed out! As for at least one report of an altercation at the end of the night, I didn't witness it, and even if I did, I try and keep negative stories like that off of the site out of respect to all parties. Check out my photos of the event (plus a "Tag Yourself!" crowd shot) at our Facebook page, and check out some great shots of the show from both the 705 Video Magazine's Facebook page (sans T-Rex Manning) and The Ripcordz' own Facebook page! (No word on possible SooToday coverage or videos from the 705VM.) As for videos, here's T-Rex Manning covering The Ramones' "53rd & 3rd" and The Misfits' "Bullet", Destroilet covering The Descendents' "I'm Not A Loser" & The Adolescents' "L.A. Girl", and The Ripcordz playing their song "Hardcore"!

That's all for tonight, but stay tuned for a new news post tomorrow night featuring a new local band and a new concert featuring two long awaited metal band returns! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERT (Lucky 13), Weekend Concert Previews, And New Banned Videos!!

Now into day #46 of our posting streak at the SMS, today's post is almost completely dedicated to previews of this weekend's metal/hard rock concerts in the Twin Saults & area tonight & tomorrow, including a Eastern U.P. band's return after an off weekend (plus new videos of theirs), and a major upcoming punk/metal concert, but first, here's a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for TONIGHT, so here's what you need to know for this weekend!

Sault Ontario alternative/hard rock cover quartet Lucky 13 will return to the stage TONIGHT at The Nicolet Tavern! Apologies for the short notice, but the show was only just announced on Wednesday, so I saved it for tonight's concert preview-centric post. Almost a month removed from their St. Patrick's Day Weekend gig at The Rockstar Bar, this talented veteran quartet featuring Route 69, Bangers & Mash, and Gully Yodelers are sure to be amped up for their second Nicolet gig, and they're promising rock n' roll good times, so why not come out to see Lucky 13 live tonight? Most of the action's tomorrow, but this could suit your Friday hard rock needs! Admission is likely free for TONIGHT'S one night only gig, you must be 19 to attend, and there's a 10:30 PM-ish start time. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be an entertaining night of 1990s-leaning alternative & hard rock covers, so don't miss this quality newer local band later this evening at The Nic! For a preview, here's Lucky 13 covering The Stone Temple Pilots' "Interestate Love Song" last fall!

Now to the previews of previously announced Saturday hard rock shows, starting with the hugely anticipated return of Montreal punk legends The Ripcordz to Sault Ste. Marie TOMORROW NIGHT! Last seen at The Speak Easy in August 2007, this hard touring veteran trio are certainly no strangers to the region dating back many years, and I know there's many local punk fans that are extremely eager for another chance to see these true Canadian punk icons in the Soo! Like the 2007 show, there will be local metal opening bands, including another long awaited local stage return courtesy of local old school hardcore quintet Destroilet! After over two years away from local shows (for reasons still not publically clear), this band of local hardcore, metal, and punk mainstays should have a chaotic set of originals and covers in store for their return, including many cuts from their new full length album! The other opening band is local punk/metal quartet T-Rex Manning (in their first show under their usual name since November), and their covers & originals should entertain fans as the set the tone for this show tomorrow night! Note that their inclusion is extra fitting, given that frontman/show promoter J.D. Pearce & drummer Rick White previously opened for The Ripcordz with a late-era Fitswitch lineup at the 2007 show.

This concert WILL be taking place downstairs at The Algonquin Pub & Sports Bar, after being briefly moved upstairs to The Rockstar Bar, but as far as I know, scheduling conflicts forced the move back downstairs, so the advertising is all still correct! Tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance at The Algonquin Hotel,  The Rad Zone, and Case's Music, along with from select opening band members, and the show has a 9:00 PM door opening time & a 19+ age limit. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be a huge concert for both punk & metal fans, and hopefully The Ripcordz tear up the Soo once again tomorrow! I'll 100% see you guys there, and for a preview, here's Destroilet playing two covers at the old Coch's Corner in 2010!

Finally for heavier weekend concerts, Kinross classic/hard rock quintet Banned are scheduled to return to The Sundown Lounge in Pickford, Michigan TOMORROW NIGHT as they return to their recently torrid pace of weekend concerts following a weekend off! This one night only gig will be Banned's first show in Pickford (a half hour south of the Soo) in 8 months, unless I missed one there in the interim, and their evolving mix of covers and originals should be fun to hear as they play their first Sundown Lounge gig with their current lineup! There's no announced cover charge for this 21+ concert, and there's a 9:00 PM start time. For more details, visit Banned's Facebook page! This should be an another entertainingly diverse night of music from Banned, so make the trip down to Pickford TOMORROW if you can, and if it doesn't work out, they'll be back in Moran next weekend! For a preview, we have some brand new videos of Banned to share on here, so what should you know on them?

Uploaded to their official YouTube channel over the past week, these are from their first ever show at The Rapids Lounge at the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino on March 30th, and both capture very different songs. One is a cover of Sugarland's "Stay" featuring just new singer Tara Starr & guitarist Alex Traynor, and it's a fairly intimate and reserved cover, which continues to show the increased country elements of their set since introducing a permanent singer. The video embedded below though is of the full band covering The Black Keys' "Lonely Boy", and Alex handles lead vocals with Tara & most other members on backing chorus vocals, which does indicate that Alex haven't completely given up singing lead at Banned shows. It's definitely a fuller and more rock-leaning song, but I find "Lonely Boy" to be badly overplayed, and I'm curious to hear their new lineup tackling a bit heavier songs like they did at earlier concerts. Check out their "Stay" cover above (and more), give their Black Keys cover a look below, and don't miss Banned at The Sundown Lounge in Pickford tomorrow night!

That's all for today, but stay tuned for more news tomorrow including updates on a major benefit for a recently passed local musician! Thanks everyone!

LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS (Haggith, The Suicide Kings, And Destroilet) & Short Notice Saturday Concert Previews!!

I wasn't planning to have a new post until tomorrow, but thanks to some recently confirmed short notice concerts, I've gotten a second one up for today, but of course, check out this month's YouTube Channel Profile on dfunker76's Kewadin Casino concert video channel in the post below this one! Tonight's post features SHORT NOTICE LOCAL CONCERT ALERTS for TOMORROW NIGHT, along with news on a limited edition EP to be sold at one, and another huge new concert next month, so here's what you need to know!

As previously referenced on here, local grunge quartet Haggith will be playing in the gymnasium at Sault College TOMORROW as part of the entertainment for this year's Relay For Life cancer fundraising event! I originally hesitated to plug it as a full concert though because I believed you needed to be a registered relay participant to attend, but according to Haggith's Facebook page earlier today, you can get in by donation, so we'll call it on here for sure now (and apologies for the short notice!) The band's first concert in two months, Haggith will likely join at least one other act on the entertainment bill (identity unclear), but for the occasion, they'll be releasing a special limited edition EP named "For The Cause" tomorrow as well! Pictured on your right, the EP (the band's first of this length & fourth released album to date) will feature 5 songs from their forthcoming third studio album "Deuce" ("Clifton Hill", "Livin' It On The Run", "75", "Leon The Janitor", and "To Stay Alive") along with a live cover of Cheap Trick's "Reach Out", and the songs are radio edits with no swearing where necessary.

"For The Cause" will be available for $5 tomorrow, and all proceeds from sales of the EP will go to the Canadian Cancer Society, which is awesome of them! Now, if you can't make this show, all of the songs (minus the Cheap Trick cover) will be on their next full length album, and all of the originals (save "Livin' It On The Run") can be streamed in studio form on their YouTube channel, but if you're at the Relay For Life tomorrow, pick up "For The Cause"... for the cause! As for the show itself, Haggith will be playing two sets of covers and originals tomorrow in the Sault College gym (with no Outback, where else could they be?), there's definitely no age limits, entry is by donation, and a 7:00 PM start time is advertised. For more details on the relay itself (which raises tons of money yearly through donations, fundraiser campaigns, and the annual relay walk), visit the official Facebook event page! It's great to see Haggith supporting such a great cause & event, and hopefully they make a big impression on Saturday!

If you can, bring donations and support cancer research tomorrow and pick up Haggith's limited edition EP, which likely won't be available for long after tomorrow! For a preview, here's the guys playing "Livin' It On The Run" last fall!

Also in Saturday shows, according to a new Facebook event page, Sault Ontario hard rock quartet The Suicide Kings will be playing at The Rockstar Bar TOMORROW NIGHT! The upcoming Rockstar Bar Battle of the Bands competitors are hyping this as a "surprise show", as they're replacing the previously scheduled Peterborough rock band Thrill of Illusion on short notice tomorrow night, due to their apparent drop-out of tomorrow's concert. My source is Suicide Kings bassist Mitch Sirie on the event page linked above. Solid replacement choice overall, and hopefully The Suicide Kings have a great set of hard rock covers and originals in store for what may be their last Rockstar Bar gig before the battle commences! I'd expect a cover charge in the $5 neighbourhood, you must be 19 to attend, and a 11:00 PM start time is advertised. Shame that Thrill of Illusion can't make it, as their alternative rock sound would have been great to hear here, but The Suicide Kings should fill in very well on short notice tomorrow night! For a preview, here's The Suicide Kings playing their original song "Into The Fray"!

Finally in new concerts, local metal bands will play support on April 13th when Montreal punk legends The Ripcordz come back to Sault Ontario! Last seen at The Speak Easy in August 2007, they've made a large name for themselves through relentless touring and numerous albums in their 30+ year existence, and they're definitely no strangers to Sault Ste. Marie through their travels! Though a large crowd hit The Speak Easy 6 years ago, the April 13th Ripcordz date will instead go down at The Algonquin Pub (downstairs from The Rockstar Bar) in the first metal/punk show there in almost 4 months, but which bands are bringing the metal? How about the long awaited return of Destroilet?! That's right, the local old school hardcore punk quintet will open for The Ripcordz next month, in what will be their first live concert since February 2011! Despite the long concert hiatus, these 5 local hardcore/punk veterans stayed together & busy with 2 CD releases, and you know they'll have a set full of chaotic originals and covers on the 13th! I couldn't tell you why it's taken 2 years for a new show of theirs, but I have a feeling things will work out just fine for Destroilet's return next month!

The other opening band will be local metal/punk quartet T-Rex Manning in their first show since "The Fiend Brigade" rocked The Canadian on March 1st, and their inclusion is a good one, given that singer/promoter J.D. Pearce & drummer Rick White (I think he's still in the fold) opened for The Ripcordz with Fitswitch's final full-time lineup in 2007! Very fitting choice, and they should add a great element to the proceedings downstairs at The Algonquin Pub on April 13th! Tickets will be $10 and can be purchased at The Algonquin Hotel, The Rad Zone, and Case's Music, as well as from members of the local opening bands. Unlike the 2007 show, there is a 19+ age limit, and the listed start time is 9:00 PM for this Saturday nighter. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This should be a can't miss concert, if what I've heard from The Ripcordz' last show here was any indication! I missed the 2007 date, but I don't plan on missing this one, so of course, stay tuned for concert updates as they roll in! How can you go wrong with Canadian punk legends & local metal favourites?

That's definitely all for today, but stay tuned tomorrow for previews of the Trapt/Hinder and Soul Killing Female/AlgomA concerts on Sunday night, along with maybe some more news! Thanks everyone!
