Well, I wasn't planning to have a new news post today, but some big stories and videos popped up recently, so I thought I'd push this month's Defunct Local Band Profile to later tonight to get this up on a reasonable schedule compared to our recent news posts. So today, we have a new solo cover video, a recent live cover, and a new local hard rock band, but instead of launching with the new band like usual, we're tying them in with a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT for this month, so here's what you need to know!
Three local bands will join forces on November 24th for a fundraiser concert at.... The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center?! That's right, the museum at 70 Pim Street (seconds from The Rockstar Bar) does host live entertainment occasionally, and while it's not known as a major hard rock/metal venue, that will change for at least one night on the 24th, as local grunge quartet Haggith are hosting a benefit concert to raise money for the Bushplane Museum that night! Last seen at the Soo Zombie Walk afterparty, this fast rising alternative band hatched a great idea to support one of the Sault's best and most iconic tourist attractions and historical centers, and hopefully this show is a huge hit! Joining them are two other local bands, including fellow Zombie Walk afterparty performers Sykotyk Rampage, in their first show since the Halloween party at the Algonquin, and you know their alternative hard rock and blues material will leave a creative impression at the Bushplane Museum on the 24th! Note that guitarist Dirk Becker might be handling sound too for this show under his "Sykotyk Sound Company" branding, as he's done recently in J.D. Pearce's latest concerts.
The third band are one that we haven't discussed on the site yet, and they are a local rock quartet named The Suicide Kings! We haven't touched on them yet because I couldn't confirm if they played heavier material, but judging by their most recent Facebook page updates, I'll tentatively count them as heavy enough for SMS coverage, as they at least hint at a hard rock sound. Launched last month, their lineup features singer/guitarist Mike Gaetano (a former metal booker at The Other Place), Bear Hunters/Sorrow Fields guitarist Mitch Sirie (who replaced Nathan Jean in the band last month due to scheduling conflicts), Wishbone bassist Steven Flint, and his former Limelight bandmate Ben Boudreau on drums. Public information on them so far is minimal though encouraging, even planning an official photo shoot and a pair of sooner debut concerts that we'll probably cover in our next post, but they describe their sound as "the best mix of classic, alternative and modern rock", which sounds promising! I'm curious to hear more from them, so stay tuned for Suicide Kings updates soon on the site, and they're now in our active Sault Ontario band links!
This show will start at 8:00 PM at The Bushplane Museum on the 24th, and tickets will be $5, which can be procured through band members or at the museum in person. It appears to be an all ages event, judging by the lack of alcohol on sale, but refreshments will be available. For more details, visit the official Facebook event page! This sounds like a very intriguing event, and for a very good local cause, so stay tuned for updates on the event (and The Suicide Kings in general) as it all rolls in!
We'll close this post with new videos, starting with this newly uploaded clip of Sault Michigan hard rock quartet Tantrym Tyme! Posted to YouTube user The37533's channel yesterday, this is of 3/4ths of the former Abstract (with bassist Mike East on guitar in place of the absent Quinton Jacobson) covering Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" at a recent outdoor concert set (not sure where though.) Jacob Hotlen's singing range works decently for this song (if a bit higher pitched), and the guys seem to know the song well, but the video quality isn't fantastic, looking somewhat fuzzy and washed out. Solid performance overall though, so check out their Poison cover below, and keep an eye out for Tantrym Tyme updates when they make it online!
Finally for this post, here's another new solo guitar cover from Ashes to Dust guitarist Alex Hemy! Uploaded to his YouTube channel on Wednesday, this is of him covering Three Days Grace's "Break" (a popular Ashes to Dust live cover), and he knows the song well! However, the backing track is too low, and for a song with so many stops and starts for the guitar parts he's playing, this might not be the best showcase for Alex's skills. It's a pretty good cover though, so give it a look below, and keep an eye out for more of Alex's videos!
That's all for now, but stay tuned tonight for this month's Defunct Local Band Profile on Amethyst! Thanks everyone!
