Another day, another concert review, this time from last night's Garden of Bedlam show at The Canadian! So here's what you guys need to know from it!
First of all, this was the first metal show at The Canadian since the renovations, so let's touch on that a bit. Looks nice in there, a bit more minimal and casual than it was before. Instead of typical bar seating with booths and tables with high stools and such, there's an area set off with comfy chairs and lower tables, and the chairs have wheels so you can take them anywhere! Interesting! There's also a bunch of wide screen TVs that shown the Canucks game all night! I think that with the concert lighting off, it'd probably look very plain, especially with not a lot on the walls and a white and green paint job, but it will probably grow on you! This pic I took near the end of the show to give you guys a peek at how The Canadian looks now!
Bring The Fallen (formerly Necropolis) kicked things off with a cover of the Black Sabbath classic "Children of the Grave", which was cool! Interesting hearing Josh Stephney sing without growling! Then, Bring The Fallen unleashed all of their originals from their soon-to-be-released EP "Stand Before" and a Trivium cover! They were just as brutal and face-meltingly heavy as they were in August! Andrew Chiarello and Dan Souliere tore it up on guitar, while Dan's backing vocals meshed very well with Josh's singing! No complaints from me for their set, hopefully they're not far off from headlining a show, they definitely have the talent to do so!
Then Garden of Bedlam took the stage, and man, they were nearly perfect! Not one dud to speak of! They played all the songs on their EP (which you could buy at the show), four new originals, and covers of bands like Tool, System of a Down, and Helmet! The new songs were all awesome, one thing I noticed was that they were generally faster and heavier than anything on the EP, which is a great sign! "Everything Will Die" and "Against The Grain" stood out to me especially for that reason! Great stuff, it makes me want their next album even more! Their older songs were awesome, and got the crowd going, but there were surprises in store! They covered PANTERA! "Fucking Hostile", to be exact, and that got a pit going (finally!)
Garden of Bedlam capped their set with a cover of "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden, and no worries Buzz, I'll forgive you reading the lyrics for the epicness of that song! Buzz' vocals were at top form all night, while Josh and Evan Belleau sounded as great as ever! The new guitar solos and riffs were awesome, Josh continues to stand out! Derek Turner also did excellent behind the drumkit! I wish there'd been more pits, but that's not the band's fault. Again, they were damn near perfect! Their encore was a cover of Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness", a great end for a great concert!
Overall, if you missed this show, I hope you had a good excuse! This is seriously one of the best shows I've seen all year! I can't wait to see both bands again! I couldn't take any videos, but I took a pile of photos, and you can check them all out at this location, or by visiting the SMS' official Facebook page! Next show I'll hit? Probably this coming Sunday for Grady at The Canadian, but we'll have to see! Stay tuned to The Sault Metal Scene tonight for a new news post, which will detail a LOCAL CONCERT ALERT near the end of the month! I'll be back later tonight, keep an eye out! Thanks everyone!
